The GOP will use this momentary diversion to push their agenda.

but how

maybe press her to talk about the women she met in jail or some thing like that

GravatarMartha left in her private jet.

Let her be.

Gack.

She thought she was a ruler. She turned out to be a pawn after all.

GravatarMorning all. Coffee's on and the sun isn't up yet.

Who else is on the guest list for

If you watch or air the Michael Jackson trial/Martha Stewart release, then the terrorists have already won.

Md. Mother Lobbies to End Sons' Concurrent Deployments in Iraq

By Avis Thomas-Lester
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, March 5, 2005; Page B01

When Ann Swann's twin sons were deployed to Iraq with the Marine Corps Reserve last year, she fired off a letter to President Bush. Her eldest son already was serving there with the Army Reserve, she explained, and she wanted one of her boys brought home.

"This letter is from a concerned mother," wrote Swann, 53, principal of Gladys Noon Spellman Elementary in Prince George's County. "I request that if at all possible, you conference with me to discuss the reason that all three of my sons (my only family left) are serving in Iraq."

GravatarMorning, please check out Juan Cole's blog to see what the Bushies Former favorite Iraqi is doing.

GravatarRe: martha. She's homebound, meaning that she has to spend five months at her estate, where she is forced to garden, ride her horses, stroll with her dogs, and reconstruct her business.

Her own personal Club Fed.

GravatarBuck Fush. Buck him I say, buck him.

GravatarThe Bush administration's phase-out program for Social Security isn’t playing too well. Of course, we’re all paying for his roadshow to sell it to us.

Bush is getting desperate and as usual, lying through his teeth (with characteristically bad grammar) "See, personal accounts is an add-on to that which the government is going to pay you," he said. "It doesn't replace the Social Security system."

However Senator Durbin gets in a good line:
"Let me tell you the motto of the 'ownership society': We're all in this alone."

Or as someone said, it’s “the “on-your-ownership society.”

As I see it, by the time they are done, the Bushists will be left with only one option: accuse Social Security of lying about a blowjob.

Gravatarwatertiger-she's allowed to leave her estate to go to work, in New York.

GravatarHow do you like this! In the article, the writer says, "Military officials acknowledge that there probably are many families who have more than one child deployed, but they say they have no way of tracking them."

Like, it is so hard to track this! Amazing. Like counting casualties. They can't do it, can they?

GravatarQuilt Lady,

I am sorry to confirm the fact that you, me, and anyone else who does not agree with the powers that be is, sadly, irrelevent.

I really should just leave the damned TV off but last night I cruised through the channels (In a fit of boredom, I guess) and caught a little bit of murdering Scarborough. They had some poor liberal - Ted Rall I believe - surrounded by three offensive and scene stealing fundies. Hell, I felt so sorry for Mr Rall and would offer him the advice to simply ignore these true believers in the future.

They were discussing the fact that the evil "Liberal" Hollywood was ignoring the needs of the Christian Fundies. Hell! What a crock of shit! I saw some terrible ideas thrown out and agreed to by acclimation. One bimbo even went so far as to say that the rules that govern our society - the Constitution apparently - are no longer important. Since the fundies have won the election, they have the right to alter the fabric of our government because, after all, THEY are the people.

DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN THEM ALL TO HELL.

If we do not adhere to the laws that govern this country, there simply is no hope. If the only voice of opposition is one that is stifled by the collective ignorance of four against one: there is no hope. So, QL, what you think is not important and what you believe is simply passe' and they will change our society for the good of all of us because God appointed them to be in charge.

GravatarSteve,

I have no idea who suggested it. I just go where they tell me.

And why was I not invited?

GravatarWell, Martha didn't need to go to jail to begin with, so I don't care where she goes. It's not like she's a danger to society.

I ain't disagreeing with you. I think what's criminal is that Ken Lay is walking around after bilking how many people out of their retirement funds while Martha goes to prison for making a measly (in comparison) $200K on an insider trading tip.

Mind you, I could do a couple of things with $200K, but everything in perspective, I suppose.

GravatarThe WP is a war mongering rag that pushed hard for war and they have relegated our war dead to a side comment at the bottom of an unrelated article!

So much for magnet ribbons.

GravatarQL,

NTodd was very passive-aggressive about inviting people -- he quietly stated that he was coming to town and "wondered" whether anyone would like to have dinner with him.

Blame Todd.

And then blame Clinton.

GravatarDWD-

It is the end of effective dissent as we know it.

Republican Adviser Dies in Carrie Fisher's home
By JEFF WILSON, AP

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (March 4) - Republican media adviser R. Gregory Stevens, recently co-chairman of the Bush/Cheney Entertainment Task Force, died in a guest room at the home of longtime friend and actress Carrie Fisher. He was 42.

Stevens was found dead by Fisher last Saturday at 10:14 a.m., said David Campbell of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office. An autopsy failed to immediately determine the cause of death and the coroner was awaiting lab results.

Foul play wasn't suspected, Campbell said Friday.

Fisher, the daughter of actress Debbie Reynolds and actor Eddie Fisher, played Princess Leia in the "Star Wars" trilogy, and she is the author of several books, including "Postcards From the Edge" which became a successful movie starring Meryl Streep.

Fisher's publicist Carol Marshall said Friday the actress was "distressed," and was waiting to hear a cause of death from the coroner.

"He's one of her best friends," Marshall said. "He was staying at her house as many of her friends do when they come into town."

Stevens, an associate with the Washington lobbying group Barbour Griffith & Rogers, specialized in foreign campaign consulting and has advised candidates in 24 international elections, according to his biography on the Barber Griffith & Rogers Web site.

He consulted on political operations in Costa Rica, Hungary, Kenya, Macedonia, Montenegro, Nigeria, South Korea, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Thailand and Togo.

Telephone messages left Friday for Barbour Griffith & Rogers spokesman Loren Monroe weren't immediately returned.

During last year's Bush for President campaign, Stevens served as co-chairman of the Bush/Cheney Entertainment Task Force and managed the campaign's relationships with key entertainment industry leaders and film, television and music celebrities.

He served as director of Entertainment Outreach for the 2001 Presidential Inaugural Committee, where he recruited and directed celebrity involvement on behalf of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

During the administration of former President George H.W. Bush, Stevens served as special assistant to Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Jack Kemp. Before that, he was deputy executive director of the California Republican Party where he directed financial operations for the successful Pete Wilson gubernatorial campaign.

From 1984 to 1987, Stevens was assistant to Drew Lewis, chairman of Warner-Amex Cable Communications Inc. During his tenure, he was appointed by President Reagan to assist Drew Lewis efforts as special envoy to Canada for acid rain.

Stevens also served on the Reagan-Bush 1984 re-election campaign as an assistant to Lewis, who was then chairman of national strategy and the Reagan-Bush Platform Team.

Stevens, a native of San Clemente, received a bachelor's deg

GravatarGood morning. I am generally a lurker here, but feel compelled to comment on a discussion I have seen in other threads-the culpability of those serving in Iraq. While I agree that those serving have a duty to disobey illegal orders, the issue is not an easy one. Sitting here in front of the computer, I know the war is illegal and so all orders coming from the c-i-c are illegal. However, I cannot judge those who are there. I do not know their circumstances, and I do know that failure to obey an order will result in serious sanctions, perhaps death.

Funeral arrangements weren't disclosed.

GravatarShe went to prison for lying about a crime that she was never charged with.
Correct, she was convicted for lying to the FBI, not insider trading. So the lesson is, if they come to your door, DONT SAY ANYTHING. Anything you say can and will be held against you. It's a crime to lie to a federal agent.

Gravatarmartha was targeted because she was an uppity woman in the boys club.

ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!

'Zactly right.

Gravatar(cont.) I wish that the support our troops side and the duty to disobey side would see that both sides are right and both have contributions to make to the discussions. I also know that I am more educated, more intelligent, and have more time for reflection than most of those serving; I am in no position to judge them. I can only support those who disobey, and hope that our government supports those who serve. I have no doubt that every death, wound, scar, injury, and harm that results from this war is the direct responsiblity and curse of Bush and his cohorts.

GravatarWGG,

I agree with you. Surprise, eh? (Still working on my Canadian)

We keep telling people that action is needed, but there, apparently, is no one to lead. We need that.

I was extremely disheartened last night. The depth of these people's ignorance of what America should be is simply incredible. I do not know the answer, or the answer is one that people are unwilling to do, either way - I see little hope for a bright future for this place.

If people would simply assert themselves, this reign of ignorance could be first neutered, and then ended. But people are too busy trying to make it from day to day and the news media is leading them down the primrose path to hell.

At least in the sixties, voices of dissent were heard - and even respected. Now if you complain about the fools, you are a nutcase or a moonbat and simply out of touch with the new reality brought on by 9/11.

GravatarCan we get a link to Bobo's world, please? It's a thinly-veiled attack on wlefare and "entitlements."

GravatarDWD: don't wear the rose glasses.

In the sixties, anyone talking about imperialism was only in the media to be mocked. Mostly, we were locked out, totally.

This is why we took to the streets: to force them to see us. Increasingly, we had to get pretty violent in resisting the Machine.

The media didn't like us at all.

Just like today, a demonstration of several thousand was called "hundreds demonstrate". If we had hundreds of thousands the headlines were, "thousands demonstrate".

Just like today. Same media, same owners or their spawn and same lies.

GravatarI have no doubt that every death, wound, scar, injury, and harm that results from this war is the direct responsiblity and curse of Bush and his cohorts.

Each and every fatal or othewise injurious indignity visited upon the victims--US and/or Iraqi--of this 'war' is the shared responsibility of every single American, but they are especially heavy on the shoulders (even the 'souls') of those who endorse the slaughter...

GravatarThe next generation grew up with the mind-set that it was better to make the system work for you than to fight the system.

GravatarAfghanistan now nearly 'a narcotics state'

I guess they're saying that anything named Poppy is a precursor to some bad shit.

Shrub really does have the fecal touch.

GravatarWGG, thankyou for remembering this.

GravatarElaine,

Rose colored glasses? Perhaps, but I do know that the stupid war was ended because people did not like seeing their children killed on the nightly news.

Difference now is that dissent has been relegated to protest zones. That and people have become accustomed to not caring anymore.

The sixties were not all that great, but we ended a war. But we did not do it by ourselves, we had help. If you cannot remember Eric Severeid pontificating, or the prevelence of an agressive media -- then I guess all is truly lost.

The difference now is that the lies are never important and the truth is even less so. In short, it is all spin all of the time. That is different.

GravatarMore Vermont National Guard troops are being shipped out to Iraq. The state still has the highest per capita death rate in Iraq of all the states. I think New York is second; both blue states. The state with the lowest death rate is (you guessed it) Texas. Apparently the troops from Vermont are being given the most dangerous assignments. I can't help wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that Vermont's two senators have been a painful thorn in Bush's side since day one. Jeffords swithched parties giving the Dems control of the senate for two years, and Leahy has been accused of being an obstructionist regarding Bush's judicial nominees. Bush is well known for being petty and vindictive to those he perceives as enemies. Does anyone know the blue state/red state breakdown of troop deaths in Iraq?

GravatarJPZ,

Damn.

GravatarIf insider trading was seriously pursued and enforced, 99.9% of Wall St. would be in the slammer. There are the bears and the bulls, they make up the 'boys club' that run the companies and are days ahead of the curve. The rest are just hogs at the trough that feed on the slop.

GravatarJerry, I hadn't heard that, but I know a lot of Guardsmen from NY went. We have them as students frequently.

GravatarDWD:
With all due respect, I beg to
differ. We didn't end a war. After
Kent State, protest effectively
ended. Which was the idea, of course.

The sad fact is, despite
all the demonstrations, the only thing
the peace movement really

GravatarDWD, et al.

The difference now is that the lies are never important and the truth is even less so.

Its because now it is easier and more acceptable to dismiss someone by drawing the bounds around "legitimate discourse" rather than address someone's argument.

If you are a talking head and you cannot argue with someone (O'Reilly, Coulter, etc) then simply say that your opponent falls outside the bounds of legitimate discourse (i.e. they are irrational, anti-american, etc).

GravatarMartha went to jail because she is a dem. The only reason Soros isn't in jail is because he knows too much.

The Friday headlines mostly said Stewart arrives at milti-million dollar estate and strolls around mansion.

When bush takes one of his many vacations, more than any other president, does he arrive at is multi-million dollar estate and stroll around his mansion. No.

Right now they will settle for dems in jail. The ovens are coming.

You might be interested in metacomments, which I think is blogrolled here. Thersites frequently discusses legitimate forms of discourse. His particular interest is "civility," a charge laid only on us, of course.

GravatarTDSWJS's Rob Corddry did a job on the Guannon story...funny stuff...

GravatarReflecting on last night's Troll-feeding party (and yes, I was guilty):

Do you think it's a friday night thing? I mean, it used to be that dweebs with modems took out thier frustrations on their bodies watching porn. Now come here and irritate others to get their jollies? Seems to me the porn would be more fun.

Maybe Atrios could do some kind of "Friday Night Troll Thread" ; you know, like those playhouses at McDonald's with lots of colors and shiny things to keep them occupied (or the freeper equivelent: Hillary, Spongebob, or Guckert thread).

Maybe they would be semi-contained to one thread that way.

Anyway, hello all. Winter is almost over (here in the South it is). Anybody working in the yard yet?

GravatarMornin', all. Only here briefly before taking Compy to the shop.

What HAS been goin' on around here? I hit Blogdex today and one the entries in the top 50 is a link to a Haloscan window from here, where it looks like some folks were briefly discussing whether or not we "have become Nazis." Sisyphus Shrugged linked to it, titling it "hey, I'm a nazi." I searched the Haloscan thread for "nazi" and found maybe 5 occurrences. Don't even know what post the thread belonged to.

Maybe Blogdex is just getting weird.

GravatarSeveral diaries in dailykos on the Italian journalist released in Iraq and shot at by US soldiers. The head of the Italian secret service in Iraq died covering the journalist with his body. The reports are saying the incident took place just 700 meters from the airport and the two-car convoy cleared all the checkpoints.
Italian secret service coordinated the journey with their US counterparts.

The Italian PM was on phone with their
secret service in the convoy throughout the incident. The US soldiers took the cell phones and shut them off, while the Italian agents were talking to their prime minister!!!
Italian press is speculating that the journalist has some info that the US military did not want to get out.
She is recuperating now in a Rome hospital. Italian PM was furious and called the US ambassador to the mat and gave him a dressing down.

GravatarOT, but anyone see any late-night infomercials for the Time-Life "Sounds of the 70s" package? I happened to come across the track lineup for their "FM Rock" CD and kinda got a kick out of it...

Mott The Hoople - All The Way To Memphis
Steve Miller Band - Going To Mexico
Moby Grape - Gypsy Wedding
Crazy Horse - Gone Dead Train
Little Feat - Willin`
The Band - The Shape I`m In
Grateful Dead - Sugar Magnolia
Doug Sahm And Band - (Is Anybody Going To) San Antone
Traffic - Empty Pages
Lou Reed - Satellite Of Love
Fleetwood Mac - Jewel Eyed Judy
Jimmy Cliff - The Harder They Come
Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story
The Byrds - Chestnut Mare
The Moody Blues - The Story In Your Eyes
Roxy Music - Do The Strand
T. Rex - Jeepster
The Doobie Brothers - Rockin` Down The Highway
Randy Newman - Sail Away

I esp. like one of the Doobie Bros. stupidest hits ever sandwiched in between T. Rex and Randy Newman... it's all baked beans, kids!

(BTW, I hear these packages are being put together by the former Robot A. Hull of Creem magazine... talk about how the mighty have fallen!)

GravatarDave:
That may explain how a really obscure
Moby Grape track got in.

GravatarSilleigh -

That was last night's party. It was OFF DA HOOK - if you like sliming around with Trolls.

I saw the Nazi comment, I think the commenter was overstating their case against the popular mindset for effect -- of course, say Nazi, and people go nuts.

Karin - I agree with this wholeheartedly! Martha took her lumps and went to jail to get it over with. What the hell has Kenneth Lay done? He sure hasn't made it to the jail, yet. Will he, ever? He defrauded old folks, young folks, middle aged folks. What did Martha do? Told a lie?

GravatarMaybe it’s time to start planning a memorial to those who have served and to those who have died in Iraq.
Focus the country on the cost of Bush’s war.
Start the process of picking a design and a location for a monument.
It took 60 years to finally get a memorial for WWII; we need to start now for the Iraq war.
Who would stand up and say they oppose it?
The public needs a constant reminder of the price being paid.

Gravatara remorseful martha is a safer america.

GravatarFour Marines died yesterday. Barely any mention in the news. Especially in right wing news.

GravatarThat may explain how a really obscure
Moby Grape track got in.

I wonder what the real motivation for including some of the songs in these things is - does someone really "pick" them, or are they just whatever the issuing company can pick up cheap?

I'd have expected "Murder in My Heart for the Judge," but then, I'm a guy who actually owns a Moby Grape boxed set!

Gravatarcntodd at 10:12-Spot on. But not permitted for the the non-Right!

Last night Tweety was badgering a spokesman from AARP (not my fave organization since they got bamboozled on the Medicare presc. bill) because he refused to go one on one with someone from USA Next. AARP guy said he was more than willing to debate opposition with some standing, and had frequently, but he would not debate front organizations.

Tweety would not let go, kept asking the same questions about appearing with Jarvis, was a like the bulldog who killed one of my kittens, shaking the limp body, growling, strangling the guy.

Then, Tweety says well, you'd get on more often if you would appear with Jarvis!! But we'll have you back sometime, that he appreciated the guy's ideas.

WTF? Could it be any clearer that the only point is the ersatz debate, not true debate on actual issues.

I try not to watch HardBall. Just got reinforced. (I cancelled extended cable so I wldn't be able to, but can sometimes get a fuzzy MSNBC.)

Gravatarsame shiT-

Now THAT's a good idea - for a lot of reasons.

GravatarKenny boy Lay sold several houses (in other states) and had one big ass place built in Texas. Why? Because the bankruptcy laws in TX allow for a homestead exemption-with no limit.

Build a $20 million mansion? Cool! File chapter 7 to discharge those pesky bills and judgements and keep it! Then sell the place and live the rest of your life on the cash! That's what the all rich who don't want to pay their debts do. In Texas.

The current bankruptcy bill in Congress won't do a damn thing to change this. In fact, it adds ways for the rich to hide assets.

GravatarFellow moonbats, we have a wanker.

GravatarAnd remember, kids - you're in the middle of another Ignore the Moronic Brownshirt Fucks Million-Dollar Weekend!

And now, back to Charlie Tuna...

GravatarHi Elaine

The new Iraq media strategy is to just ignore it. It'll be easy because no one ever really gave a rat's ass about Iraq democracy or the well being of Iraqi people.

This is simply a misguided war of revenge sold to Americans as a war of self defense and Iraqi freedom.

How come I never see any "Support Iraqi Democracy" bumper stickers or ribbon magnets?

GravatarNo red state blue state breakdown but I think Cali leads the pack followed by Texas. But I've read in a few publications that rural areas of the country tend to be taking the bulk of the casualties. I also have read that in the Army Reserve states from the upper midwest have had the most KIA, WIA and non-battle deaths.

GravatarGotta go, folks.
Looking forward to seeing some of
you ce soir.

GravatarSteve-

They're all ridiculous. What I wouldn't give to see a reasoned counterpoint every once in awhile; but all we ever get is half-baked party line or self-indulgent invective.

Where do the reasonable conservative republicans (REAL ones, a la Sen. Warner) - you know, the ones you disagree with, but don't necessarily want to pack off on a boat to the arctic - hang out? I guess they probably just don't hang out on the internets too much.

It would be refreshing to hear something sane from the other side. If the best they can do is Toby Putzpuller, this country really is in bad shape.

GravatarLast night Tweety was badgering a spokesman from AARP (not my fave organization since they got bamboozled on the Medicare presc. bill) because he refused to go one on one with someone from USA Next.

tweety was instrumental in legitimizing swift boat veterans and their ad during the campaign. he gave them endless airtime and replays of that video. he's an opportunistic pig with no professional ethics.

I was a kid in sixth grade trying to go to a dentist appointment in Kent the day after the shootings happened. My mom couldn't get to Dr. Kaminski's office because a tank was blocking the middle of Water St. I'll never...ever forget it.

Jerry Casale said he envisioned DEVO on May 4th, 1970. He has maintained over the years that he was standing very near to Alison Krauss who was one of the students killed that day.

GravatarI'm kind of surprised that the idea of morphing Bill O'Liely, aka Bunny Buster, into Elmer Fudd didn't catch on better. Is it because typing Fudd is a lot harder than you'd think at first? Was it, pardon the expression, "intellectual property" infringment? Doesn't satire come under fair use?

GravatarCompletely OT, if there is a thread, but I saw the weirdest thing yesterday.

I'm on my way to work, just pulled out of the driveway, when I see this bird in a neighbor's yard. About 1 - 1-1/2' from tip of beak to tip of tail, black crest, long black tail feathers, white belly, and mottled black and white over the rest of the body. I think, "that looks just like a roadrunner! But can't be one." I stopped the car, got out, walked closer to the bird...it continues walking along, watched it...figured it must be some kind of woodpecker.

So I do an online search this morning, and the damn thing really WAS a roadrunner...walking through yards in my suburban Little Rock neighborhood. What the hell? This is a mostly flightless bird, over 1000 miles from its usual habitat.

Truly, the end times are at hand.

GravatarYeah, Tweety is lame. During the Swift Boat Liars extravaganza, the only interviewer who ask the SBL's for evidence was Chris Wallace on Faux. I just about fell out of my chair. When the Swifty answered, "Uh, no" Wallace was stunned. That should have been the first and last question anyone asked them.

If only there were real journalists on tv. *sigh*

Gravatarthe only interviewer who ask the SBL's for evidence [of their wild claims] was Chris Wallace on Faux.

GravatarTheOther - perhaps people need to start suing the networks as well as the SBVFT types, when the networks (or other press) are derelict in their duty to at least try to establish facts.

If I'm pissed at my next door neighbor and decide to make up a lie that Mr. Jones next door is a child molester, and I go on a local news show and accuse Mr. Jones of being a child molester, and then the news show picks up on my accusation and repeats it, without bothering to find out whether or not it's true, is not the news show every bit as guilty of slander as I am?

Saying damaging things about people without bothering to determine whether or not they are true is slander. Yes, there is some leeway granted when the person is a "public" personality or the offending statements were satirical in nature. But I'm not sure that this grants anyone carte blanche in just piling on whatever shit they can pull out of their ass about someone who is in the public eye. I don't think they sacrifice their right to be protected from character assasination just because they are "famous".

A few lawsuits would help determine what the parameters are. And I wish John Kerry would go after John O'Neill as a first test case.

Gravatar"So I do an online search this morning, and the damn thing really WAS a roadrunner...walking through yards in my suburban Little Rock neighborhood. What the hell? This is a mostly flightless bird, over 1000 miles from its usual habitat."

So, you think folks from Arizona have to -stay- in Arizona? We don't like to travel and see Little Rock? Just a nice walk for a roadrunner, after all. The guys who really get into trouble are the damned seagulls who mistake New Mexico lava fields for the ocean.

Gravatarbut, but the media is saving us from unproven statements -- didn't you see the chicago trib pulled the boondocks cartoon for that very reason.

The Trib tells readers: "Today's original Boondocks strip presents inaccurate information as fact. Please enjoy this substitute.""

Awwwww... what a fuckin tragedy! Breaks my fuckin heart...

one fewer to worry about...fuck 'em

GravatarGWPDA - See, here's the thing: I really wasn't aware that roadrunners MIGRATE (either WITH coconuts or WITHOUT).

You're right, that's one hell of a walk. And he sure didn't come looking for other roadrunners, cause that's the first time I've ever seen one in these parts.

GravatarJennifer - don't worry about it. I'm sure he was just visiting relatives.

One down....a few million more to go.

Fuck Bush and his ass-kissers, one and all!

GravatarWatts and Stonewall, too. Protests can only be squelched so long before the shit blows. I had a history prof tell me, about 7 years ago, that there was going to be hell to pay in this country within 20 years...race (anyone not a wasp) and equal rights were his contexts for this blowup...I think it's a whole lot worse after seeing the last 4.5 years in politics. I think I'll add the class divisions, in general. Rich are richer and the poor feed their asses.

women and homosexuals are also going to torch some Republican ass the way things are going.

GravatarWas there a coyote around anywhere, Jennifer?

Seriously though, that is a cool sighting. My first thought was it might be an escaped pet or zoo animal...

GravatarI had to get off another board here on Atrios.

Some charmer kept calling me a "cunt."

Aren't Bushtards lovely people?

GravatarResponding to today's Daily Howler:

Why is it so unreasonable to ask that the wealthiest pay the same tax the poorest pay, or at least some portion of it? All of the discussion is about raising the income level to $120 or $140K. But why do the rich get a pass?

I read Sommersby's piece about Chris Matthew's "unfair for $500K earners" diatribe on Hardball yesterday. It appears Chris is worried about having to pay a SS tax. I come away thinking he's only concerned with protecting his own wealth. The rest of the population be damned.

Some very basic issues seem to be lost in this discussion. For example, I earn $9,000 a year as a self-employed person. Of that, I'm required to pay 12.5% for SS. Now try living on $7,875 a year in California. The fact is, you can't. So, you end up late paying the tax, which means you pay penalties and interest too. The real tax rate for people like me is closer to 25%.

How is this system fair to the working poor, yet where are people like me mentioned in this debate? The fact is, we likely work harder and longer than most, particularly the wealthy, just to survive at the margins.

It galls me to hear the most affluent amongst us, people who would remain affluent or are already wealthy, complain about the prospect of having to pay the same tax I do because they're wealthy and don't need social security. The only thing worse is the phony political rhetoric.

What poor creatures the rich are. It must be horrible having to live in constant fear of a 12.5% tax, even if they will derive a return.

Some enlightened 21st century society this. Why aren't we talking about a SS system that provides a uniform, true standard-of-living to all retirement-age citizens? Wouldn't that lower the tax rate by lowering benefits for higher income brackets? Couldn't those brackets, in turn, apply their tax savings to other retirement instruments such as savings or investments?

Here's the point. As it currently exists, my SS benefits amount to $400 a month. They rise to $800 if I wait to the statistical end my income bracket’s life expectancy. So, I don't get to retire unless it's to an abandoned tenement or dumpster. Now it's not like I want to retire. I enjoy working, although not in constant fear of homelessness. The question is, why am I paying a disproportionate tax that further impoverishes me now while offering not enough in the future? It's a fool's errand, particularly when the rich pay nothing.

Gravatar" It's a fool's errand, particularly when the rich pay nothing."

Yes, but the rich do pay - but only up to a certain amount of income - now $90,000. There's a logic behind this, but the logic has been eroded in the same way that the logic behind the Alternative Minimum Tax has eroded. Both presumed that income levels over roughly that amount were rare and were thus subject to different forms of taxation. They are by no means common any longer, but they're not rare either - last year I got hit with the AMT, only because I fell heir to a large settlement - not an earned amount - and suddenly my tax rate was a lot closer to being wealthy than it should have been, legitimately.

This is not to say that the taxation system is particularly clean or fair - nor is the method used for paying into the Social Insurance System (which is what it's known as in Canada, and could legitimately be called in the US). You, making a wee income should not have to pay such a large proportion of it into Social Security. Equally, somebody making a taxable income beyond 90k shouldn't be exempt from paying in on that additional unless they are equally exempt from drawing funds based on that excess.

UN Inspectors:
90 Dangerous Sites Looted in Iraq
Sat Mar 5, 6:54 AM
By Evelyn Leopold

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Some 90 sites in Iraq that the United Nations had monitored for unconventional arms materials have been razed or looted since the U.S. intervention, according to a new U.N. inspection report.
The U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC), created to track Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, based its conclusion in a Friday report on satellite imagery from sites with material that had weapons potential.

Gravatar"Yes, but the rich do pay - but only up to a certain amount of income - now $90,000."

In the era of median priced $350,000 homes, $90K isn't rich.

You can argue 90, 120 or 140K thresholds, but why do 300K and above get a pass when they can afford more than anyone else?

True, originally these brackets were taxed diffenently. They were taxed on income much more than today. So I'm not so interested in upper middle income, other than they need to participate. I'm more interested in why the truly wealthy should get pass. Hell, they benefit from the US system more than anyone else.

The old argument was they paid a vastly higher percentage of income taxes. That's not true anymore, which probalby explains why the distribution of wealth in the US today is more lobsided than during the British Class System.
