I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

Gravatarwoohoo! Frist!

Fuck Bush and his ENORMOUS BALLS!!!!

Preemptive Troll Repellent.
*PSSHHH*

GravatarRick Santorum a lying fuck? How can that be? Has he told Lassie?

GravatarIs anyone surprised that he's a lying sack o' shit?

Flush Santorum down the toilet of history!!

I wish my brother still lived in PA so I could harangue him to vote against this dogfucker.

Gravatarahhh the smell of newness....

GravatarGood morning, McMoonbats!

GravatarHope it works, Sir Foxbat. The Chernoff thread was getting pretty ripe. Much like Santorum's widdow bwain. Lying piece o' feces....

GravatarGood Morning. HOW big were those balls again?

GravatarMaybe he finally came to Jesus.

GravatarOT: Oil at $58.14 per barrel

GravatarTop o' the day to ye, Big Daddy, her eyes, and me darlin' Vicki!

GravatarHi Vicki!

Gravatartelling the truth is hard, well, it's hard *work*

GravatarTop o' the day to ye, Big Daddy, her eyes, and me darlin' Vicki!

Top o' the day back to ya all!

And may you be in Heaven (or what passes for it) and hour before the Devil (or Bush) knows you're dead.

GravatarHey O'Filk!

Gravatarhow are you feeling today, O'Filkerquito?

GravatarBig Daddy Mars--and may the wind be at your back, and fuck bush!

GravatarI hear ya filk, I tried to hose it down, but it was lost...

Happy St. Patrick's Day all! But steer clear of the green beer!!

GravatarHe has to destroy Amtrak in order to save it?

GravatarHi to all my lovely O'Squitoes!

GravatarMaybe someone finally told Santorum that dogs aren't allowed on amtrak, though maybe he could get one allowed as a "service" dog?

GravatarThey declare war on the North East and the bottom sucking sanctomat pretends to fight them while supporting them. Sounds like the sanctum Santorum to me. Why does the North East elect someone from a party which does everything it can to destroy it? Why does the North East send any Republicans to Washington to feather their personal nest at the region's expense? Will it continue to send them?

These are the questions that should be being asked.

GravatarEd Helms speculated that by the time Scalia was named Chief Justice, his balls would be VISIBLE FROM SPACE!!

Oh, I almost emptied my bladder on that one...

GravatarThis really is amazing news.

I mean, isn't Santorum from Pennsylvania? Don't folks in that part of the country actually use the trains on a daily basis for commutes? Can he really be that stupid?

Or that cynical?

Or that delusional about his invincibility?

I need to add something to my coffee.

GravatarHello everybody!!!I'm in shock!

GravatarHe has to destroy Amtrak in order to save it?

Shouldn't that be "derail Amtrak"? Oh, I know, it was too obvious...

Gravatarwhy are for government subsidising of trains anyway?

GravatarDiane,

Yes to all.

GravatarHi to all my lovely O'Squitoes!

Just to remind any one who misted the classic the first time around (or who wants to relive it again):

Mansquito. Tonight, SciFi Chan. 9 PM ET.

GravatarIt isn't just "folks" who use amtrak, it's also massive numbers of state elected officials and their staffs who use it to travel to harrisburg and back... Santorum might just be pissing off the wrong people

Gravatarwhy are we for government subsidising of trains?

GravatarOil at $58.14 per barrel

Of course it is. Please note that with the declining dollar, the lube to santorum ratio is going to fall also.

Higher oil prices = bigger lies told.

GravatarHiya, Blak! And, much better, Her Eyes, thanks. I think I managed to avoid the traditional bronchitis/screwed-up throat completely. 'Tis a great weekend to sing!

GravatarShouldn't that be "derail Amtrak"? Oh, I know, it was too obvious...

Derail would sound too much like a terrorist opperation.

Sometimes you have to destroy something to save it. Or not.

Gravatarwhy are for government subsidising of roads anyway?

GravatarWhy does the North East elect someone from a party which does everything it can to destroy it?

Not to make excuses for my neighboring state to the West, but lots of Pennsylvania has good reason to be called Pennsyltucky. Philly is kind of an anomaly there. Ask people west of Harrisburg if they live in the Northeast and I don't think they'd say yes. At least geographically, most of PA is part of Bobo's world...

GravatarPlease note that with the declining dollar, the lube to santorum ratio is going to fall also.

ROFLMAO.

GravatarNPR had a half-way decent story on France's rail system last Sunday.

A committment to building infrastructure that is quiet, safe, non-polluting, effective and convenient.

How civilized.

How Un-American.

GravatarI think it is just FANTASTIC! that on the day Oil hits a record high, the GOP in their wisdom votes to derail mass transit!

Huzzah for Idiocy!

Three Cheers for Ignorance!

A Jesus Horse for Modern Man!

GravatarDamn Atrios,

Well said. It's about time the Amtrak money pit went away.

Sounds to me like Santorum just came to his senses.

GravatarFrom Ann Arbor, getting to Chicago takes about five or six hours no matter what. If my final destination is in or near downtown, Amtrak is by far the easiest and cheapest way to go. No driving, no traffic, no dealing with airport security, and decent-sized bathrooms.

Gravatarby that logic, we should be subsidising the tracks, not the trains. with our government deficits, every penny counts.
not trying to troll.

GravatarTop o' the mornin' to ya!

May you live 100 years and 1 more to repent.

They'll never save Amtrak. Bush doesn't do energy efficient transportation.

Gravatarwhy are we for government subsidising of trains?
hysteresis

Can you say "infrastructure?"

Good, I thought you could...

Useful, available, affordable mass-transit is one of the hallmarks of a truly national culture...

or are you one of those who believes that, because YOU don't use it, some service is irrelevant and/or unnecessary?

just askin...

Gravatarwhy are we for government subsidising of trains?
hysteresis

'Cuz government subsidises all transportation in the U.S. Remember regulations on Interstate highways for straights every few miles to provide emergency runways. (though somehow excluding Providence)

Unfortunately the more energy efficient the mode of transit, the less money it will get from the Busheviks.

Gravatarglad you are better filk! glad you will be in foine voice!

how ironic. oil up and politicians trying to screw up public transportation. idiots.

Gravatarwrite the Penna papers too. That's what I did last night when visions of driving 95 instead of taking the train to work danced in my head. Not surprisingly, they didn't run in this morning's paper. Maybe I should lose the F bombs.

Atrios | Email | Homepage | 03.17.05 - 9:39 am

Same reason I'm for government subsidizing of health care: the private sector has been shown to be worried most about raw profit, rather than quality, safety, fair treatment of employees, or any other thing that might get in the way of the bottom line.

Mass transportation and streets for public use are far too important to be left to the beancounters

GravatarAbout a maid I'll sing a song
Sing rickety-tickety-tin
About a maid I'll sing a song
Who didn't have her family long
Not only did she do them wrong
She did ev'ryone of them in, them in
She did ev'ryone of them in

One morning in a fit of pique
Sing rickety-tickety-tin
One morning in a fit of pique
She drowned her father in the creek
The water tasted bad for a week
And we had to make do with gin, with gin
We had to make do with gin

Her mother she could never stand
Sing rickety-tickety-tin
Her mother she could never stand
And so a cyanide soup she planned
The mother died with a spoon in her hand
And her face in a hideous grin, a grin
Her face in a hideous grin

She set her sister's hair on fire
Rickety-tickety-tin
She set her sister's hair on fire
And as the smoke and flame rose high'r
Danced around the funeral pyre
Playin' a violin, -olin
Playin' a violin

She weighted her brother down with stones
Rickety-tickety-tin
She weighted her brother down with stones
And sent him off to Davy Jones
All they ever found were some bones
And occasional pieces of skin, of skin
Occasional pieces of skin

One day when she had nothing to do
Rickety-tickety-tin
One day when she had nothing to do
She cut her baby brother in two
And served him up as an Irish stew
And invited the neighbors in, -bors in
Invited the neighbors in

And when at last the police came by
Rickety-tickety-tin
And when at last the police came by
Her little pranks she did not deny
To do so she would have had to lie
And lying, she knew, was a sin, a sin
Lying, she knew, was a sin

My tragic tale, I won't prolong
Rickety-tickety-tin
My tragic tale I won't prolong
And if you do not enjoy my song
You've yourselves to blame if it's too long
You should never have let me begin, begin
You should never have let me begin

Gravatarthanks for the replies. guess i'm biased, since i'm an airline employee and people often say quit bailing out the airlines (I agree with them).

GravatarI didn't know there was a big Amtrack presence in Santorum's home state of Virginia?

GravatarC'mon, quit yer bitchin'. Isn't the war in Iraq one big oil subsidy?

Don't say our preznit never did anything for the 'Murikan people.

GravatarAmtrak needs to propose reconstruction of passenger service in Iraq in order to get unlimited funding.

Without any oversight of the money, or any necessity to actually produce any results in Iraq, Amtrak could bring back the hey day of passenger railroading in America.

When are public benefit businesses going to wake up to the repukelican way of doing business?

Someone mentioned last night that the tracks are owned by the freight lines. I suspect they are subsidized to some extent.

GravatarIsn't true that the fed govement owns every passenger airport in the country, administers the rules, runs the air traffic control system and has bailed out all the airlines? But not one penny for rail? Is Washington trying to cut itself off from New York?

No, for instance all 3 major metro NY airports, as well as Teterboro, are owned/run by the Port Authority of NY and NJ

GravatarAmtrak already ended its Pittsburgh to Chicago rail service, but you can still go Phila to Pittsburgh and all the stops in-between.

Here's more, from just last month:

Specter and U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Penn Hills, said they support President Bush's general goal of cutting the budget deficit but not at the expense of Amtrak, which employs 3,061 people in Pennsylvania.

Chrissy Shott, press secretary for Santorum, said the senator has consistently voted to give more money to Amtrak than Bush has proposed in previous budgets. . . .

Mark Spada, president of the Keystone Association of Railroad Passengers, said the president's proposed budget would be a disaster for Pennsylvania.

"It would eliminate service basically west of Harrisburg," he said.

even more on how stoopid this was.

Gravatarnjbrad -- Pennsylvania is said to be Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between.

Santorum, like so many other GOPers, is a party man first and an American a distant second. Responsive to his constituents? ha ha ha ha ha. Can't even see that one without a telescope.

GravatarOh, here's something interesting (from BBC):

Afghanistan's elections delayed

President Karzai says Afghan elections will be held in September, not May, after Condoleezza Rice lets slip there will be a delay.

Speaking in Kabul after talks with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, President Karzai blamed the delay on "technical matters".

Ms Rice said in her opening statements that the poll would take place later in the year, apparently not aware that the new date had yet to be made official.

She said it would show "the Afghan people's commitment to democracy".

When asked for clarification, Ms Rice said: "I hope I didn't break the story."

Mr Karzai then confirmed the elections would take place in September.

Hummm . . . who's the house nergo here?

GravatarTop o' the marnin to ye, me foine boyos and girlos! Let me be the farst to say, UUUURRRP! Ack! Ptoo!

GravatarHeheh. Oil prices through the roof, but bitching about subsidizing mass transit...

Because any money spent that results in less dependence on foreign oil (like, less people driving CARS!!) helps the environment, helps our economy, and is the RIGHT FREAKIN THING TO DO!!

Asswipe.

GravatarMaybe it's time for the states to take back AMTRAK.

Several states and municipalities run railroads on a cost-effective basis.

I believe states in the northern corridor (Maine to Virginia) can establish their own system.

Last year I shopped prices on AMTRAK and Metro North...from Poughkeepsie to NY Grand Central. AMTRAK was twice the cost.

AMTRAK had 1/10th the number of trains and they are always late.

The federal gvT has proven itself unable to do anything right. It's time for states, municipalities and the people to take back the system.

AMTRAK could be a good test model

GravatarI'm well aware of the crony capitalism and the looting of the treasury by this corrupt administration. I am also concerned about the fact that we are addicted to government subsidies for almost everthing. I'm only saying that our limited amount of funds should be used to help the poor in both their immediate needs and, in the long term, to help them join the middle class. not swords, plowshares and plowshare training programs.

GravatarWhat sort of man are you who doesn't believe in the little people?

Gravatar'Tis a foine, foine day t'ignore a moronic brownshirt fuck, 'tis!

GravatarHow about, Santorum knows he's not going to win the next election, what with the whole theocrat, antisex freak thing, and therefore has no motivation to continue pandering to his Pennsylvania consituents.

As in, he never really believed in Amtrak, only said he wanted to save it to get some votes, and isn't bothering anymore.

GravatarDiane--

Most of the lines Amtrak uses are owned by the freight lines, which are less concerned about the speed that the freight moves (which is kind of stupid -- they would be able to undercut trucking the way they used to if they were faster & more reliable -- it's called investment)

A society will support what it values -- so I guess we're doomed!

Gravatarwhy are for government subsidising of trains anyway?

why is government subsidizing:

** security (police, CIA, military, FBI, INA...);
** emergency services (fire, EMS,...);
** education;
** airports and airline security;
** electric, water, and sewer utilities;
** roads;
** mail service;
** ecetera, ecetera, ecetera...?

its called being a functioning modern nation and unlike the military, such things are most productive use of tax dollars in improving the QULAITY of the lives of a nation's citzenry including stimulating economic activity.

They could also take a look at the Metra system in Chicago. It's efficient, cost effective and (usually) dependable. Only raised rates once in the 4 years I lived there. Illinois helps subsidize it and it works great.

Blogs being self-correcting and all, the PAof NY&NJ leases Laguardia and JFK from NYC and Newark from the city of Newark while it does actually own Teterboro.

It feels good to admit mistakes!

GravatarThe Irish never quit . . .

Drinkin'!

One of my favorite jokes this time o'year:

One day an Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman walked into a pub together. They each bought a pint of
Guinness. Just as they were about to enjoy their creamy beverage, three flies landed in each of their pints,
and were stuck in the thick head. The Englishman pushed his beer away in disgust. The Scotsman fished the fly
out of his beer and continued drinking it, as if nothing had happened. The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of
his drink, but then held it out over the beer and yelled, "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!!!!"

GravatarI'm shocked, shocked that Santorum lied.

What a worthless sack of pigshit he is.

GravatarI'm saying states can run profitable railroads if the feds are eliminated

Ms Rice said in her opening statements that the poll would take place later in the year, apparently not aware that the new date had yet to be made official.

BTW--these "technical matters" must be related to some glitch in the Diebold machines that allows people to actually vote for whom they wish.

Government subsidizes EVERYTHING.

That's what government does.

It subsidizes food production )big farm subsidies, etc), energy production (with "oil depletion allowances", e.g.), transportation production (airline subsidies are prominent, especially after 9/11), drug production (the Medicaid Drug Bill last year), etc...

Did you skip 10th grade civics, dear?

GravatarHi Da....ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz..

GravatarFact of life that the govt must own and administer the highway system, the ports, the air transport system and the railroads or give up its status as 'modern nation.'

GravatarPenn Station in New York is owned by Amtrak. It's possible some other company could do a better job of operating a train, but I'm not sure where they would park it.

GravatarAs stated above, most of the rail lines and equipment in much of the country is owned by private freight companies.

With fuel up 40% and rising, freight by train should be viable.

Better integration, BY STATES, with passenger systems might work.

We can either give up the rail or look for viable alternatives.

The federal government is not a viable alternative.

GravatarIsn't true that the fed govement owns every passenger airport in the country, administers the rules, runs the air traffic control system and has bailed out all the airlines? But not one penny for rail? Is Washington trying to cut itself off from New York?

Sure sounds like it.

The irony is that DC's Metro line is what makes DC livable. Otherwise, the gridlock and pollution would be like unto that of Mexico City.

GravatarI'm a New Yorker who happened to grow up in PA (my folks still live there). Amtrak should be part of a broader plan to get Americans out of their cars and into public transit as often as possible.

The flunky who took my comment stammered something about how amendments come up that are...uh...and then he sort of faded off on some other tangent.

Santorum got busted on this, big-time. I am looking forward to '06. I grew up in Casey country, and I think that he's but one of a promising slate of challengers for Santorum's seat. Let's Daschle Santorum--big time!

GravatarSince we're talking about cuts:

NASA Proposal to Reduce Spending for Aviation Research by 20% Dismays Experts

"Continuing cuts in aviation research at NASA are endangering the country's leadership in aeronautics and the aerospace industry, several experts testified on Wednesday.

"Members of Congress and authorities on aviation expressed concern about National Aeronautics and Space Administration plans to reduce spending on aviation research by 20 percent over five years. Under the plans, some wind tunnels and other centers would be closed and hundreds of jobs eliminated.

"... NASA has proposed an aviation research budget of $852.3 million for the 2006 fiscal year, $54 million less than this year, with more reductions planned in later years. On the whole, the Bush administration proposed a modest 2.4 percent increase in the NASA budget, to $16.5 billion. Most of the increase is geared toward the Moon-Mars initiative, which would require officials to cut or reduce other programs like aviation research.

"'This program is on its way to becoming irrelevant to the future of aeronautics in this country and in the world,' said Dr. John M. Klineberg, a retired NASA official and an industry executive who headed a National Research Council study group that examined the aeronautics programs.

"Dr. Klineberg said the review, published last year, found that NASA was trying to conduct too many aviation studies with diminishing budgets. The group suggested consolidating and focusing programs. Dr. Klineberg said in an interview after the hearing that NASA should not use this recommendation to rationalize the cuts it was considering, including eliminating whole areas of research.

"...Aeronautics research, a NASA hallmark since the agency's founding, has been credited with advances like new airplane wing designs, turbulence detectors, more fuel efficient engines and research on wingtip devices that reduce drag and improve fuel consumption."

Nope. Don't need to worry about any of that stuff.

GravatarI'm sorry I asked a question that offended so many people. I'ts been a long time since my 10th grade civics class. I am 46 years old and only a high school graduate. I'm sure most of you are colledge educated. but to fix our country's long term finanacial problems, a lot of hard choices are going to have to be made. Thats all I'm saying. I hope this really is a group of free thinkers and not a group of people with shirts that are a different shade of brown.

Gravatarblamed the delay on "technical matters".

Not being in control of most of the country is a "technical matter" ?

GravatarOT and probably also affected by state level cuts, via Kos:

According to county election officials and other sources, all Maryland voting machines have been on "lockdown" since November 2, 2004 due to statewide machine failures including 12% of machines in Montgomery County, some of which appear to have lost votes in significant numbers. The State Board of Elections convinced the media that Election Day went smoothly, when in fact there were serious statewide, systemic problems with the Diebold electronic voting machines -- so serious that the SBE and Diebold still have not figured out how to prevent the loss of votes in the future.

"Election Day was anything but smooth. Votes were lost, computer cards storing votes were unreadable, thousands of error messages were reported, machines froze in mid-voting and machines refused to boot up. The problems with the machines were so widespread and serious that efforts to hide the problems have failed," said Linda Schade, director of TrueVoteMD.org. "It is not sufficient for Diebold and the SBE to investigate themselves. They have misled the public about this problem and an independent investigation is needed. Further, these problems indicate that the Diebold machines should be decertified as required by Maryland law and as provided for in the Diebold contrac

Take it back from the feds and manage it correctly - for a profit

GravatarWhy are we subsidizing trains?

Because Bush's buddy Osama bin Laden can't fly them into buildings. Only a raving maniac would make plans to hijack a train.

Gravatarbut to fix our country's long term finanacial problems, a lot of hard choices are going to have to be made.

Like, where to spend the money wasted in tthe Bushevik's wholesale tax-cuts for the wealthy?

Like what to do with the enormous deficits the Busheviks have created to support their mad imperial ambitions?

Like where to bury the reeking, rotting, maggot-laden carcasses of the Busheviks who've made it their special business to fuck up what was, not that long ago--i know you remember--a pretty nice place to live...

answer those first, okay?

GravatarThe irony is that DC's Metro line is what makes DC livable.

indeed. And you can bet the hypocritcal GOP bastards aren't going to d anything to jepordize that "waste of taxpayer money".

Thats all I'm saying. hsteresis:
i get your anger, and i think it's sad that we have to talk about these issues in an environment of either/or. the simple fact is we could employ people like you at a living wage, have competitive service and bidding, and fuel efficient and fast transportation all for far less than the cost of what we spend in iraq for the year. but we don't. so us good liberals get to spend our time arguing over who it's more 'fair' to hurt, working airline employess or amtrack workers.

notice no one ever talks about cutting CEO pay. i wonder how that would help you.

GravatarTake it back from the feds and manage it correctly - for a profit
Ducksawce - 10:16 am

Use Iraq as your model for the new conservative think-tank "privatized" utopian economy and security system.

GravatarMy sense is that Sen man-on-dogs base is west of Harrisburg. As AMTRAK's reach is very limited outside the north east there really is no downside for the lying sack-o-dog poop on this vote.

GravatarSince Amtrak owns and maintains the tracks in most of the Northeast Corridor, I wonder what this does to, say, SEPTA regional?

GravatarCD,

Great Post. I actually heard that Maryland went to Bush, but Robert "KKK" Byrd rigged the election through that impish Barbara Mikulski by tampering with the machines.

Damn her good looks! That Vixen has fooled me for the last time!

Gravatarblamed the delay on "technical matters".

Not being in control of most of the country is a "technical matter" ?

It's just a technicality.

GravatarAh, but the whackers have always hated Amtrak, for some reason. Probably the car lobby. Really, though, haven't the airlines bled us all dry already?

Gravatar Ulster should be returned to Eire

And fuck the majority of Ultster who don't want to be part Eire right?

I don't think you've offended anyone. I think it's more a matter of setting off our collective "why the hell can't they rethink our national priorities top-to-bottom" button.

Indeed, a whole lot of hard choices have to be made. The biggest problem is that so many of them are interconnected, it may not be possible to make many of them without upsetting many others. Our national/regional/local views on transportation are widely disparate, simply because of what we need and what we can do in a given area, e.g., in southeastern Michigan a light rail system is out of the question, but we wish to hell someone would fix up the buses in Detroit.

(Ann Arbor has an excellent bus system; took awhile to get there, but it's pretty darn solid, and reaches several outlying Washtenaw-county communities.)

Industry, job growth, pollution control, urban sprawl, conservation, and a host of other issues all tangle in this issue, even before the lobbyists and "reformers" get involved. Sometimes I really wish we could just start over.

GravatarMy favorite pub in San Luis Obispo used to only serve one color of beer on St. Paddy's...black. (They served only Guiness on this day and at the correct temperature.) Don't know if they're still there or if they still observe this tradition, but if so and you visit Spike's, and see a mug somewhere hanging on a wall that says "Poodles From Hell", that's mine.

GravatarSantorum is such a little wuss.

He knows that big moneyed Repugs in the Pittsburgh area are responsible for his being in the Senate so he's not going to oppose Preznit Jerkoff on anything.

I wish someone would catch Ricky Boy in bed with a boy....or a sheep!

Gravatarahh yes - Amtrak...

if more rail is removed form service (like after WW2) more cars will be sold and more highways will be needed - how much cheaper is a highway than a railway?

IT ISN'T

another example of what happens when you place ingorant and empty headed stupid people in positions of power...they make dumb decisions.

the red states don't use rails - they live out in nowhere-land so they can worship their freaky-jeebus in isolation from anyone with a clue who would point out their craziness: "your religion is all about you dancing around with poisonous snakes in your hands?!?"

GravatarAnd all the 24/7 "news" channels are carrying live the Congress on steroids in baseball now.

Sheez!!!!!!

Yes, me boy-o, fuck them, the mean, miserable lot of those left-footing traitors.

GravatarWhat % of AMTRAK funding stays in Washington and/or is wasted by the feds.

The problem might be solvable if we can't get rid of the federal money pit.

GravatarUlster should be returned to Eire

The Old Man From Scene 24

Exactly - I am of Irish and English descent and my Irish forebears are Catholic AND Protestant so I have no axe to grind here.

But the truth of the matter is that the MAJORITY want to remain part of the UK.

GravatarI love Ireland, mostly for the sheep.

Gravatar"Yes, me boy-o, fuck them, the mean, miserable lot of those left-footing traitors.

I don't think Eire wants them, either. Too much expense.

GravatarUlster should be returned to Eire

And fuck the majority of Ultster who don't want to be part Eire right?
The Old Man From Scene 24

Item: The Provos are losing their numerical advantage in the north already, as the Catholics out-reproduce 'em ("Every Sperm Is Sacred"). The only reason the Provos even began to negotiate with the IRA was that they recognized their population bulge was shrinking...

And the Provos can go back to Britain, right?

GravatarTheOldManfromScene24 - And fuck the majority of Ulster

I'll tell you what I always tell Mr. Tena when this subject comes up - I'm sorry for the Northern Irish who don't want to be part of Eire, but for god's sake, Northern Ireland is geographically part of the Irish Republic and should be politically reunited, IMO.

All that said - I'm not a citizen of either place, so it's none of my business, I guess.

GravatarThe blue states need to find ways to distance themselves from the train wreck in Washington.

Let the fucking red states get run down...They voted for the assholes.

I'm sorry there are good people stuck in the reds, but we in the blues have to solve our own problems before they destroy us.

GravatarI'm not sure where to bury these carcasses you are talking about. I am for bringing the troops home immediatly, impeaching bush, raising taxes to pay down the deficit, and making this world a better place for all(I do remember what it used to be like). but if you want the echo chamber version, here goes. FUCK BUSH! FUCK HIS EVIL SATANIC FASCHIST ASSOCIATES! there you go.

GravatarOops, there went Bucks County!
The Newtown-Yardley commuters to NYC use NJ Transit, not Amtrak. Much cheaper.

Also, Amtrak goes all the way from NY to Phila to Pittsburgh, every single day.

GravatarSt. Patrick's day celebrates the Irish embrace of Christian Civilization and a turn away from their barbaric and pagan past.

GravatarI still don't get why you guys are so pissed at Santorum. He's only acting as y'all expect him to act.

So what's the problem? I mean it's not like he lied under oath!

GravatarMore importantly, do you have any pet sheep?

GravatarLet's take a 200 year old victory in battle against catholics and rub it in their faces every year. Yeah, that's an award-winning way to foster goodwill.

GravatarAh, yes, remember street cars? Didn't think so. The auto industry basically killed them. They have been hell bent on stopping any kind of viable public transportation ever since. It's the "free market" you know.

GravatarHi, all...OT but I was forced to watch a little O'Reilly last night. In a segment touching on the U.S. army homicide allegations, the liberal they had on was some woman Ivy League prof. She was pretty awesome, understated, taking no shit from O'Reilly on the subject of whether the NYTimes and the media in general is liberal. Didn't get her name, though. Damn, 'cause I doubt very much he's gonna have her on again anytime soon, not the way she was fighting back.

Gravatarhysteresis -- don't let WGG put you off. He's a good guy, but intense....

GravatarClinton! I'm smart.

GravatarDucksawce - I'm okay with letting the red states go down, even though I live in one, just to make the point that they aren't inherently better than the blue states and on many issues are worse.

To your point, hysteresis, I think the frustration stems from the fact that we wouldn't be talking about having to make these hard choices if bushco hadn't pissed away our surplus on givebacks to rich fucks and unnecessary wars!!

Don't take it personally. I don't think you're a troll (notice I haven't sprayed you...) but when we get infested by them, the level of discourse tends to go down. (funny that!)

GravatarI went to Ulster in the summer of 97 during Marching Season. Heading north across the border from Clones, there was heavy traffic heading south. When we got to Belfast, the place was near abandoned. We were the only guests in the 600 room Mariott across from Queen's University. Met a prof from the Norse program who told me Ulster emptied out for a nice vacation down south during Marching Season.

Went down to The Bot pub, where the students told us the annual ecstasy rave thrown on New Years Eve in Belfast by pop star Goldie was one of the best remedies in breaching the sectarian divide.

GravatarOh, man. 15 minutes and everybody is fightin' like hell. Must be St. Patrick's day.

Gravatar I'm sorry for the Northern Irish who don't want to be part of Eire, but for god's sake, Northern Ireland is geographically part of the Irish Republic and should be politically reunited, IMO.

So Canada should be part of the US? The US part of Mexico? The Scots shouldn't have autonomy because they are geographicaly part of Britian? Sorry Tena I don't buy that argument.

The Northern Irish protestants have been there as long or longer than most ethnic groups have been in the USA, they have as much right to self determination as anyone.

GravatarI had to call the Harrisburg office 'cause I couldn't get through to the D.C. or Philadelphia ones.

I told the guy who answered how furious I was that Santorum was obviously more interested in rising through the party hierarchy than he was in representing the citizens of Pennsylvania.

And then I said, "Oh, I forgot. He lives in Virginia now, doesn't he?"

GravatarI started a weblog yesterday. I would welcome any questions/comments/observations. Thank you...Mike

GravatarThanks to all. I understand the frustration that democrats feel as I live in Texas and work with a bunch of union conservatives (kind of like jews for Hitler). As for airlines being subsidised; other than the bailout after 9/11, we have not been bailed out. Airlines are heavily taxed. I have already taken a 25% pay cut, and thanks to fuel prices, will probably be asked to take another. Airline tickets are stiil cheap, however. I'm concerned about my children more than myself, as I'm sure all you parents out there are. thanks again.

Gravatar(can't oil companies pay for their own drills?)

Down in Texas they call that "Opium" = OPM = "Other People's Money."

The only way to run a business.

GravatarNY State already has economic/trade agreements with Quebec (Montreal).

The most cost effective way to get goods to and from Montreal is vis the rail system that connects NY and NJ (container ports) with Montreal.

AMTRAK has done nothing but screw up this system.

It's time to eliminate the feds and have a joint Quebeqouis/New York rail system...that sends no money back to Washington and AMTRAK.

The neocons are forcing us to find new solutions to governance. It's time to control our own destinies.

Gravatareven if they become the majority?

if/when they become the majority they can do whatever they like. I don't care personally one way or the other, there are plenty of scumbags on both sides whehter its Gerry Adams or Ian Paisly. I do beleive in the right of self-determination.

Gravatar"The Pres of Ireland just gave Bush a shamrock."

Notice also that Gerry Adams wasn't invited to the White House this year. That Bush - he's a uniter not a divider.

GravatarI guess someone told Sen. Santorum that Amtrak allows gays to ride in the same cars with everyone else.

Heathens!

Gravatar< wingnut > But, unlike Clinton whom we assume you worship just like we worship St. Ronnie, he didn't lie under oath! < / wingnut >

So -- I dare you to put your preciously non-perjuring Republican heros under oath and to compel them to testify ... I bet they'll perjure themselves quicker than you can say "I am not a crook". There is a reason why judges normally shut down fishing expeditions ... I bet under the right circumstances, a good lawyer could have gotten honest Abe to perjure himself ("I did not have sex with that man, Jubilation T. Cornpone" ... "oh, when I said that I was figuring that sticking it between his thighs wasn't sex" ...).

I say let's start with the Presnit ... if all of this about Clinton was uncovered starting with Whitewater scandals and rumors of sexual harassment, shouldn't someone go after Bush for Harken (after all, Martha Stewart was being investigated for the same thing when she lied to prosecutors about a crime she didn't commit and she went to jail for it) and whatever he may have done while high?

You cannot say person A is more moral than person B if person B sinned in an environment from which person A was shielded (i.e. you cannot say someone who doesn't have to testify under oath about embarrassing stuff is more moral 'cause he didn't commit perjury than someone who committed perjury when testifying about embarrassing stuff). Or to personalize this and put it in the wording of GWB's fav. philosopher: "judge not lest ye be judged".

GravatarNotice also that Gerry Adams wasn't invited to the White House this year.

Bush will be meeting with the McCartney sisters later today.

GravatarAiieee! My Irish, English, and Scot genes are all beating the crap out of each other!

GravatarOldMan - I'd really rather compare it to say, Highland Park, which is an incorporated city within the city limits of Dallas. It makes no sense.

But like I said, Old Man, I'm not a citizen of either place. My opinion is my opinion on it, and has no bearing on what will happen.

I think that after about 1000 years of this fight between Britain and Ireland, enough is enough. Ireland isn't that big - let the island be one country. It would be better all the way around. Britain wouldn't have the ongoing expense of keeping military there, let alone the tension.

Sometimes the greater good outweighs the self-determination of a group of people. IMO, the greater good is for the country to be whole.

GravatarSantorum rips a new asshole. Or maybe, enlarges the existing asshole.

Gravatar"St. Ronnie"

Yeah - Saint Ronald of the Monster Deficit.

GravatarOK, I got through and they got nothing...Santorum is still behind Amtrak but "something about the bill" was not acceptable to him.

GravatarIn far too many ways we have become the same as Ireland.

London and Washington have destroyed the backwaters.

They have used religion to divide the people.

They have forced Ireland to come up with their own economic development plans that distance themselves from England (past colonial masters).

The English economy suffer implosion with all resources being sucked to London.

They have a nasty class system that is getting worse, rather than better

They have a problem with immigrants and major racial problems.

Ulster must break free before they are sucked down the toilet by London

They must become part of the post
mdern world.

Gravatari got home yesterday, and my kid said "you should have heard what chimpy said today!"

Gravatarcriticize santorum for this all you want, but don't forget to give him credit for all the excellent work he has done in the field of animal husbandry.

GravatarHappy birthday, O'nora!

GravatarSo, I called the good Senator's office and the youngin' who answered the phone assured me that snatorum would be offering a counter-proposal. Naturally, I asked, what and when, but he didn't know.

Now, as it happens, I have been working with my otherwise completely useless Congressman on this issue, so it gave me a good stand to take in calling.

By far, the most amusing part of the phone call came during the following exchange:

me: You know, I have been working my butt off with my Congressman's office to save Amtrak. It's very important to the Northeast to have it for tourism and business. We were counting on the Senator's support based on comment he made on National television. And now he votes against it. First he's against the president, now he votes with him. How are we supposed to trust him. It seems like he was lying.

Intern: Yeah.

Me: Yeah, he's lying?

Intern: No, I didn't mean to say--

Me: You just said, yeah, when I said it seems like he lying.

Intern: No, I meant to say--

Me: But that's what you said. See, any reasonable person agrees that it's just like lying. It's okay. I think we all know that he was lying when he said that. I am eager to hear what his secret proposal is for saving Amtrak though. Do you know when he will be releasing it?

Intern: Umm, no.

Me: Okay. Well, please tell the Senator that his consitutents are very disappointed that he won't support Amtrak.

Intern: Umm. Okay.

Poor dear.

GravatarI'm sorry for the Northern Irish who don't want to be part of Eire, but for god's sake, Northern Ireland is geographically part of the Irish Republic and should be politically reunited, IMO.

I still don't understand what the fuss is about: conservative Irish Protestants and even Ulster Unionists of Scottish ancestry would feel far more at home in the Irish Republic than a bunch of radicalized (northern) Irish nationalists would.

Are the "Prods" so afraid of "Popery" that they are not behaving rationally (kind of like red-Americans being so afraid of gay married terrorists they don't vote rationally - btw: what does that say about the assumption of rational self-interest held by so many economists?)? Why do the loyalists/unionists remind me of the older, Protestant couple in Meaning of Life? ("What are we then?" "Protestant and fiercely proud of it")

In general I tend to view whether or not something should be done by what action or inaction minimizes "regret". For example, even though I am not a Zionist, it seems to me a one state solution in Israel/Palestine would not minimize regret (what would the rights of Jews be in such a state? what about the historically necessary need of Jews to have someplace to go when "they" start killing us in other places ... and I am not sure how long our welcome is gonna last here -- thanks Paul and Doug for ruining it for the rest of us!). But I fail to see the regret which would accrue by unifying Ireland.

Could somebody fill my ignorant, Yankee self in on the big deal?

-- Not Irish but assumed to be 'cause of my red hair and freckles

GravatarWhy subsidise Amtrak? Ask first, why subsidise Halliburton? Ask next, who serves the greater public good at greater public value per distributed public tax dollars?

GravatarTrolls are sometimes caricatured as socially inept. This is often due to the fundamental attribution error, as it is impossible to know the real traits of an individual solely from their online discourse. Indeed, since intentional trolls are alleged to knowingly flout social boundaries, it is difficult to typecast them as socially inept since they have arguably proven adept at their goal.

GravatarOnly then, can we get this Country back on track.
James Joyce | Email | Homepage | 03.17.05 - 11:03 am

Gotta say, dude. If "the side that's gonna win" hasn't got the country back on track after being completely in power for five years, I don't hold out a lot of hope.

GravatarNearly 900,000 people ride Amtrak's Keystone Corridor between Harrisburg and Philadelphia each year. Nearly 4.9 million people statewide board Amtrak annually, and more than 300,000 people ride Amtrak in Harrisburg alone.

That's a whole lot of people Man on O'Doggie just pissed off. Lying liar. But, IOKIYAR.

GravatarThe attack on Amtrak is really an attack on the blue states and their successful commuter lines. The real money loser for Amtrak is the rarely used lines thru the red states. Certain politicians like the pork so they keep those lines running at a loss for the whole system.

Pathetic.

GravatarHey, o'pie, how are things back in the great white north? You left at the exact right time - it's gotten really cold here again. Happy St. Pat's day!

GravatarI've decided I've had enough. I can't take the bullshit anymore. I'm going to take Dr. Phil's advice:

Dr Phil's RX for Inner Peace

I am passing this on to you because it definitely worked for me and we all could use more calm in our lives. By following the simple advice I heard on a Dr. Phil show, I have finally found inner peace.

Dr. Phil proclaimed "The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you've started."

So I looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn't finished, and, before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of Chardonnay, a bottle of Bailey's, a bottle of Kahlua, a package of Oreos, the remainder of both Prozac and Valium prescriptions, the rest of the cheesecake, some saltines and a box of chocolates.

You have no idea how freaking good I feel.

Please pass this on to those you feel are in need of inner peace.

GravatarVia First Draft, Tena's Action Alert:

Today's action is a little different. You don't have to call, or e-mail, or write a letter to anyone. Today's action is to spend some time enjoying nature. With the Senate agreeing to drill in the Arctic Natural Wildlife Reserve, we've lost one of the last pristine places left on the planet. Go for a walk in the park, spend some time with a pet, plant some seeds. Then, resolve to fight even harder the next time our planet is threatened.

Shorter Tena: get out of the house, ya stupid geeks!

GravatarI hope everyone made it clear to their Senators that a vote to drill in the Arctic Refuge assues that they will never get your vote or force you to listen to any more phony double speak about centrist environmentalism. Get the brushes ready to wash off the endangered animals, everyone.

GravatarWoody's Guitar, the word "Provos" doesn't refer to "Protestants." "Provos" is short for "Provisional IRA" - that is, the faction of the IRA that remained active when the majority of the group ceased fire in the 1970s.

Just curious, James Joyce, but which Stalinist-era Politburo member are you quoting?

Because, you know, one-party government was really big with the commies. And look what great results it produced for them!

Great photos at palemale.com.

GravatarMeanwhile back to the Amtrak issue: have the media been reporting on this at all?

Or was this smuggled in under the radar with everything else that is going on?

The Rethugs are amazing with their ability to blow such much smoke around that one has no idea what's going on in government. So much for a democratic republic.

My question: if Amtrak didn't have to pay to maintain the rails but rather rails were directly maintained by government on a separate account (just as roads are government maintained and even airports get gov. cash), would Amtrak still be operating at a loss?

Also - if Amtrak could get more gummint cash and lower its prices, maybe more people would take it? I travel to DC every so often and, especially if I am carpooling, it is cheaper and more convenient to drive.

I know my brother would rather take a train to visit home in So.Cal. from Davis than fly or drive, but somehow it is cheaper to fly than to take the train. And I don't think it is an issue of efficiency (I don't think Amtrak is that wasteful in terms of its operations and trains are certainly more fuel, etc., efficient than planes that have to go up and down as well as travel from point A to B) but rather that Amtrak has to make so much money from ticket sales rather than actually getting the real subsidies it needs, especially in terms of infrastructure - which should not even be on the Amtrak budget!

OTOH - if Amtrak were cheaper how many more people like me would hop on a train to DC? And since the marginal cost of adding passengers on trains is, I imagine, quite low, if Amtrak could increase its volume, even by lowering its prices, wouldn't it make more of a profit?

GravatarBrooklyn Girl - So I looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn't finished, and, before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of Chardonnay, a bottle of Bailey's, a bottle of Kahlua, a package of Oreos, the remainder of both Prozac and Valium prescriptions, the rest of the cheesecake, some saltines and a box of chocolates.

Couldn't we just save this money as they just vote for what Smirk wants anyway. What the fuck good are they?
Make Dubya the Dictator and be done with the fuckin country.

GravatarJesus,

where to start.

First, my name ain't Rob.

Second, Brooklyn Girl, of course you're all fucked up. You watch TeeVee for psychological help.

Third, Jennifer, relax. Go do what I recommended to Marcie after a tiff. Go do something to make a liberal feel good. Kill a Baby or something like that.

Fact is, another party will emerge. The only question is wether that Party will be in between Repubs and Dems or to the right of Repubs.

Either way, no worries, you'll still have a choice; stay in the US or go to Canada.

Dave, shut the fuck up...ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz........

ACM...you hit the nail on the head. According to Dems, if you don't support an increase, you're voting to decrease. More torturously inconsistent logic from the left side.

GravatarMeanwhile back to the Amtrak issue: have the media been reporting on this at all?

No cause right now on MSNBC they are showing the Seating Arrangement of baseball players to testify in front of Congress. CNN didn't have this...oh my.

Gravatarbottom o' the morning to ya.

I must admit, I did not know of the creepy Sandorum fetus fetish until today.

For those too shy to ask (it's quoted from a story linked at the "homepage"):

View: Santorum’s Slip: Another GOP loose cannon backfires

by Michelangelo Signorile
2003-05-07

It’s true that Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Rick Santorum’s comments about homosexuality were more outrageous than even the most garish gay pride parade. In a now-infamous Associated Press interview, he defended sodomy laws, equating homosexuality with incest, polygamy, adultery and bigamy. And Santorum later refused to apologize.

But the creepiest bit in the article actually had nothing to do with gays or sodomy. It was this buried little factoid: “He and his wife, Karen, have seven children—including, as Santorum puts it, ‘the one in Heaven.’ Their fourth baby, Gabriel Michael, died in 1996, two hours after an emergency delivery in Karen Santorum’s 20th week of pregnancy. The couple took Gabriel’s body home to let their three other young children see and hold the baby before burying him ... .”

That’s been reported before—it is in fact often repeated in the context of Santorum’s crusade against abortion—but having this weirdness brought forth within the context of the guy’s condemning other people’s behavior is pretty jarring. I mean, how much more perverted can you get than walking around with a dead, five-month-old fetus and having your kids caress it?

GravatarNTodd, I am really enjoying your various posting names as you meander through these threads.

I'm glad. It's all part of the value I bring the o'blogosphere.

GravatarHappy St. Patrick's Day everyone.

My favorite Irish song is by an Englishman.

If you have the luck of
the irish,
You'd be sorry and wish you
were dead
You should have the luck of
the irish
And you'd wish you was
English instead!

A thousand years of torture
and hunger

Drove the people away from
their land,
A land full of beutty and wonder
Was raped by the british
brigands! Goddman!
Goddman!

If you could keep voices
like flowers
There'd be aharmock all over
the world.
If you could drink dreams
like the irish streams

Then the world would be high
as the mountain of morn

In the Pool they told us
the story
How the english divided
the land,
Of the pain, the death and
the glory
And the poets of auld
Eireland

If we could make chains with
the morning dew
The world would be like
galeway Bay
Let's walk over rainbows
like leprechauns
The world would beone big
Blarney stone

Why the hell are the English
there anyway?
As they kill with god on
their side!
Blame it all on the kids and
the IRA!
As the bastards commit genocide
Aye! Aye!
Genocide!

If you had the luck of
the irish
You should have the luck of
the irish
You'd be sorry and wish you
were dead
And you's wish you were
english instead!
Yes you'd wish you was
english instead!!

Keep it up, kids!

GravatarMornin' all! Happy St. Patty's Day B-day to me and Nora, if she's out there!
Feel free to drink lots of green beer in our honor.

GravatarSantorum is every bit the family man at home that he is in the Senate.

What a sick bastard!!!

He and his wife, Karen, have seven children - including, as Santorum puts it, "the one in Heaven." Their fourth baby, Gabriel Michael, died in 1996, two hours after an emergency delivery in Karen Santorum's 20th week of pregnancy. The couple took Gabriel's body home to let their three other young children see and hold the baby before burying him according to Karen Santorum's book of the ordeal, "Letters to Gabriel."

GravatarGreat thread! Full of good Irish jokes (love 'em) and debate about our nation's transportation budget. What's not to like?

hysteresis, you raise really good questions.

Why do we subsidize passenger trains?

Ever since the growth of highways and use of autos, passenger trains as a business is no longer economically viable.

The growth in the use of autos was subsidized by the government through the financing of the national highway system (defense program, remember?) cheap gas (how long will that last?) and pro-development policies that encouraged suburbanization and sprawl. So when you're making comparisons in spending, please add all these into the equation.

Aviation--
On 9/11/01, we all discovered how key aviation is to our economy. It's hard to make money in the airline industry. The airlines would fail if there was no confidence in the system that keeps them in the sky. In order to keep air navigation and control safe and reliable, we subsidize it. We subsidize the processes and, in some cases, the structures, but not the actual airports themselves. FAA just announced plans to contract out some smaller air traffic control facilities, so FAA will only be directly funding the major ones.

Hope that answers some questions. With the price of gas going up and concerns about hazardous materials as well as the increase in mail order commerce and just-in-time inventory, freight trains make more sense than ever. It also makes sense to maintain a robust passenger rail system for our national defense. We cannot always rely on cars and planes.

Any transportation system can be sabotaged. No system is completely secure. But we should have some choice and redundancy built in-- especially where the highest concentration of the population resides.

We piss billions away every day trying to fund projects that make no sense. You'd think we'd be able to find a billion to fund something that does.

GravatarGotta say, dude. If "the side that's gonna win" hasn't got the country back on track after being completely in power for five years, I don't hold out a lot of hope.

How do you get the country back on track when you're just killed Amtrak?

Gravatarbig O'vic - Me too. Ireland has seen an economic renaissance in the last decade and if any country deserved it, it's Ireland.

I love the Irish. I fell totally in love with Ireland when I was there. I could move to Dublin or the countryside in a heart beat - if I could afford it. The economic boom has made it more expensive to live there.

And of course, now the dollar is a shit, which makes it even more expensive.

GravatarIs there any way states can take back the FCC?

The new appointment (Martin)is straight out of "1984"

He is backed by the Christian right and believes in media consolidation

The internets may be the only answer since he will destroy any free ideas on radio/tv.

We must work to keep the net free before they come up with a control device planted in our PCs.

Thanks for that link!

GravatarWell, this has been fantastic, but I have to go do some stuff that'll make money (I hope). A most excellent St. Patty's Day to you all, and I'll catch you later tonight or tomorrow.

GravatarHow do you get the country back on track when you've just killed Amtrak?

>rimshot!<

Hi-yooooooooooo!

GravatarBDM, Witty Rejoinder! Well Done Sir!

GravatarPart of the lack of support from red states or even rural blue states on Amtrak is just a mental thing: many rural people don't feel very comfortable traveling without their own vehicle. I know this mentality is prevalent among many of the "country folk" here in western WI. This is what makes Amtrack (and carpooling, really) a tough sell sometimes to rural folks. It requires them to let go of their imagined dependence on having their own, personal transportation. They feel much more comfortable driving themselves to Madison or Milwaukee than relying on Amtrak.

Part of encouraging more mass transit will be to convince these sorts of people to put the car keys down and try a different way. Unfortunately, this probably is of no interest to our oil-man infested government.

GravatarJames Joyce - Yeah, we've seen a lot of examples about how one-party governments allow other parties to participate. No worries there!

You root for partisan gain rather than the good of the country. No sane person could argue that we're better off now than we were five years ago. But, that's ok with you because you think you are "winning".

Familiar at all with the concept of a Pyrrhic victory?

GravatarThanks for that link!

FYI, she's sitting on one egg.

And doesn't move much! (Though later in the afternoon, she often disappears for an hour or so and then you get to watch the egg!)

GravatarHappy O'Birthday to you, O'TJ and O'Nora

GravatarBunker buster,

Santorum is one sick mofo. That fetus thing probably traumatized his *Earthly* kids. Eeeeewwww.

GravatarIt's all a big fucking football game to these assclowns. They could give two shits about the good of the country as long as their "team" is winning.

GravatarNo sane person ...

DING DING DING DING DING!

We have a weiner!!!

GravatarAfter 9/11 we found out that we had better have an alternative to air travel in place because you might just have to shut it down when airplanes are used as bombs. Or have we forgotten that little lesson.

GravatarFor anyone who has not seen the "Pale Male" documentary: check it out from your library, borrower it from a birder, steal it from a store, do whatever but you have to see it.

The documentary, which is on DVD and VHS, covers not just Pale Male and Lola and the chicks they have raised, but also the New Yorkers who spend time (some of them all day, some of them short visits) watching PM and Lola go about their lives. As one New Yorker says in the documentary, "This is the only place in New York where rich and poor stand together." (or something like that.)

GravatarJennifer You Ignorant Slut.

I think that the Republican Platform IS good for the Country.

It's not just about partisanship.

Anyway, relax...think happy thoughts. Something like "Dead Fetuses!"

The pendulum will swing and the Dems will come back to power some day. I'm bettin' the pendulum won't swing as far left as it did in the 60s/70s though.

GravatarMeanwhile back to the Amtrak issue: have the media been reporting on this at all?

Do the so called news stations cover missing kids and pregnant women murders because:
they think that is what sells, ie only what people will watch

or

because they really don't have the ability anymore to do good investigative journalism??

I think it's the latter and they can't or won't admit it.

GravatarWe can only hope that the rest of the GOP is as delusional and as out of touch as our trolls. The more they over-reach the harder they will fall.

GravatarThey also hope for Armageddon because they're social misfits that realize they have no place in a functional, thriving society.

GravatarOkay, someone call housekeeping and tell them we need clean sheets because we spilled Green Beer on ours.

GravatarSee ya, O'Filkersquito.

Happy, happy birthday, TJ!

GravatarSomebody please pay attention to me.

GravatarI think that the Republican Platform IS good for the Country.

You woulda made Hitler happy.

Why do you hate America, rob?

GravatarThe new appointment (Martin)is straight out of "1984"

GravatarHappy birthday, TJ!

GravatarThe Old Man From Scene 24,

You may be right...we may be crazy. But it just may be a lunatic the Counrty's looking for!

BTW - We are still IN power and increasingly our lead every day!

GravatarThat cocksucker better keep his filthy hands off of Deadwood.

GravatarACM...you hit the nail on the head. According to Dems, if you don't support an increase, you're voting to decrease. More torturously inconsistent logic from the left side.

Amtrak's budget is $1.2 billion. The 2006 Senate Budget gives Amtrak an operatin' budget o' $360 million. The amendment woulda restored the budget tae current funding levels.

GravatarJust a drive by, but Happy Paddy's Day to all.

GravatarWe subsidize the processes and, in some cases, the structures, but not the actual airports themselves. FAA just announced plans to contract out some smaller air traffic control facilities, so FAA will only be directly funding the major ones. - suzq

Thank you for the input. I guess subsidizing airports would actually be equivalent to subsidizing train stations.

IIRC, train stations (and many airports) are subsidized and even ran by local governments (or local authorities, regional/state authorities) -- so there is parity there.

But air traffic control and whatever other "infrastructure" required for air transport is subsidized if I understand you correctly?

OTOH, rail lines, from what I can tell are either owned by Amtrak as an entity or by private freight companies.

AFAIC, this is ridiculous: rail lines, like other infrastructure, should be a government (not even a private gov. enterprise but purely a gov.) concern.

GravatarIt looks like we can kiss all the good shows on cable goodbye. Damn, the new season of The Shield just started.

How can the FCC step in and tell cable what they can and cannot broadcast? We pay for cable - we pay for those shows directly. I do not see how the FCC can to that.

Gravataro'pie,

my name's NOT rob. You just busted Godwin and BTW, Hitler was a socialist.

So I'm postin' and I looks to the side and sees Springer smilin' at me with this caption:

A mayor. An Emmy-winning broadcaster. A dedicated, passionate progressive. Jerry Springer on the Radio, 9 A.M.-12 P.M.

You guys are embracing Springer!

Yeah, and the Repubs are the only ones who "Just Wanna Win."

No really...Springer is Good for the Country!

BWAAAAAHAHAAHHAHAAHAHHAAAAAAA!!!!!!!

And another thing...Dave...Shu the Fuck..ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz.......

GravatarThe North will eventually reunite with the Republic because it will be good for football (i.e., scoocer to us Yanks) -- so said a Irish retreatant at the monastery

Gravatar They could give two shits about the good of the country as long as their "team" is winning.
BlakNo1

You better believe it, brother. Only a total dumbass or the willfully ignorant would say this country hasn't taken a dive under Bu$hCo. Hell, the entire world HATES us. That is success.

GravatarOK, that was unfair. I actually loved Springer's work on 2 Lesbians Kissing!

BWWWWAAAAAAHHHAAAAAAAHAHHHAAAAAAA!!!!

GravatarIs anyone impressed by my "articualte" comments yet? Anyone?

Gravatarnobody's going to read down this far, but I just have to ask: is voting against an increase the same as supporting a decrease? I'm no Santorum fan, but it looks like you're comparing two different things. his support for transit may be shallow, but that's not the same as saying that he's a lyer (on this one)...

It's about restoring funding from a proposed massive cut proposed by Bush.

GravatarThanks, tena, pie, big o'vic--it is a fun birthday, I have to say. It's one of the few stress-free holidays left--your only mission is to drink as much as possible.

re: Amtrak, my only experience was one summer when the kids and I rode the train from Jacksonville, Florida to Berkeley, CA. They were 3 and 5 at the time and remember the trip to this day. We met a lot of fascinating people. I would hate to think that others could never have that opportunity.

Gravatarwe need clean sheets because we spilled Green Beer on ours.

Sorry. I tend to spill a lot.

GravatarHold it Snow...AMTRAK's still a waste of money.

Now about that significant other...does he/she exist?

GravatarThe larger question that Amtrak cuts raise is as follows:

Should Amtrak be viewed as a long-distance transportation option for rural residents who live several hours' drive from an airport, or should Amtrak be viewed as a fuel-efficient, high-speed medium-haul transportation option supplementing, or perhaps replacing overburdened air transit routes such as the Boston-D.C. corridor, Seattle-LA, Detroit-Chicago, and Dallas-Houston. If the latter's the case, we need to really think hard about spending more on infrastructure. Acela's nice (done it once) but it saves only a half-hour over the standard reserved trains on the DC-to-NY run. The existing CSX lines can't handle the TGV/Bullet Train style trains in France and Japan, so we'd have to either upgrade or find new rights-of-way that could handle the faster trains. I don't know that we can put any more planes in the air on the East Coast, so we really need to be thinking about this as a nation.

GravatarYou just busted Godwin

You didn't get the memo, eh? Godwin's been suspended.

Hitler was a socialist

No, he was a National Socialist. Let's stop equivocating, shall we?

GravatarAnd I'm still waiting for someone to set me up with their sheep. You gotta take the action where you can get it.

GravatarTena, Here's how.

3/1/05 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Stevens said Tuesday he would push to apply broadcast decency standards to subscription television and radio services like cable and satellite.

"Cable is a much greater violator in the indecency area," the Alaska Republican told the National Association of Broadcasters, which represents most local television affiliates. "I think we have the same power to deal with cable as over-the-air" broadcasters.

"There has to be some standard of decency," he said.

GravatarBrooklyn Girl,

Very Good! Nicely Done Madame!

GravatarHitler was a socialist - that is the biggest fucking Ha Ha Ha that trolls cling to.

Anyone can call themselves or their political party any fucking thing they want to. It does not make it so.

Name one - just one - socialist program that Hitler instituted. Just one.

GravatarThe Republican platform? You mean the things they tell you they stand for, or the things they actually stand for? Such as, getting government out of people's lives? Which in action means: getting government off the backs of polluting corporations who are giving kids cancer and into the bedrooms of homosexuals where it belongs?

Or fiscal accountability - Republicans like to talk about that a lot, while running up the biggest debts in world history.

Or how about the one about spreading freedom, while here at home, stifling the voices of anyone who disagrees? I suppose what they mean is they'd like to make the entire world equally unfree, which means we have to give up some of ours so other countries can have a little (but not too much). Kind of like they've done to your wages - you have to give up a living wage so someone in another country can get a raise to $2 per day. Oh, and also so the CEO can get his $200 million annual salary.

I wonder if you'll still be crowing about "winning" when you're living in one of the new Rio-style shantytowns that Republican urban planners envision as the average American community of the future?

I guess you answered my question about Pyrrhic victories by indirection; you obviously have no fucking idea what it means.

GravatarIt requires them to let go of their imagined dependence on having their own, personal transportation. They feel much more comfortable driving themselves to Madison or Milwaukee than relying on Amtrak.

Too true, and frankly, something that drives me nuts sometimes about my fellow Americans. You can't fix stupid, and that's just a stupid, stupid attitude.

"My car makes me independent." I've heard that so many times from people who are herded like sheep onto multilane Interstates, stuck in soul-crushing daily commutes in private cars because of this dumbass 'tude and hyped fear of mass transit.

I live in a county that has a freight rail line running right through it. our metro area's commuter line could run on it with minimum infrastructure monkeying. Yet when it was put to a referendum, the yokels were terrified that "those people" would take the train to our lily white 'burbs.

Or so they said. Turns out (as I've been told, since) that most were really more afraid that their lily-white kids would ride rails into the city and see what life was really like.

Ok, I've got to go beat something up now.

GravatarNTodd...great distinction. And the difference in policy is?

GravatarBack on track, yeah right. Let's just give all the money to Halliburton and big business for a couple more years and see how much is left for people like you. Does that make you happy? Do you want your hard work to be rewarded too, or do you want to sell your vote to people who don't give a shit how you do.

GravatarThe cable companies will have nothing to do with that whackjob, unless losing money is something they enjoy.

GravatarNow about that significant other...does he/she exist?

My friends didn't believe Stef existed because for years they'd never met her. They called her my Femmebot. Still do, in fact.

GravatarUF - so he says it - that still doesn't mean he can do anything. I don't think he can and I don't think he will.

I think cable will pound him into the pavement. And I think cable will have help from Congress - how many Repugs get money from pornographers?

GravatarTena, HItler loved gun control too.

(I hear that a lot.)

Gravatar
I think cable will pound him into the pavement. And I think cable will have help from Congress - how many Repugs get money from pornographers?

I was reading the same thing. Even Powell was backing off on the cable thing that Steven's was raggin' on.

Gravatarthe bankruptcy bill, the torte reform, the anwr drilling, the raping of social security, the tax caps on the rich, derailing amtrak, invading a sovreign country, lying about wmd, ignoring 9/11 threats. what's next? what. the. fuck. is. next?

GravatarI know my brother would rather take a train to visit home in So.Cal. from Davis than fly or drive, but somehow it is cheaper to fly than to take the train.

I don't know how you can say that, I've been comparing prices between cities in CA, and train is way cheaper. Slower, maybe, but cheaper.
And train from NY to DC is faster and cheaper than flying.

GravatarNTodd...great distinction. And the difference in policy is?

Only one I can think of off the top of my head: Nazis killed Socialists.

Gravatar""There has to be some standard of decency," he said."

You know, I read a book once about a group of people who were living in the ideal Republican society. I believe it was called "The Witch of Blackbird Pond."

You heartless bastards! At least leave our cable TV alone. It's 90% crap already. Leave us our "Deadwood" and our "Soprano's", we begs ya!

GravatarRegarding Santorum's fetus fetish:

Has anybody asked him the question -- how would he and his wife liked it if the "emergency delivery" of the fetus in (or after) which it ended up dying was investigated like a homocide?

After all, if abortion is homocide as pro-lifers like Santorum claim, shouldn't there have been an investigation into the mysterious circumstances of an "emergency delivery"?

Probably would turn out to be "justifiable" (life or health of the mother is at stake), but it is a fine line between what the Santora did and abortion, isn't it?

And what of people who feel that the health of the mother is not a just cause for abortion? Or even if the fetus is dead or dying?

And how do you distinguish between an emergency delivery and an abortion?

Many people think abortion is wrong, but many people, when challenged, realize that only bad can come from legislating against abortion: we need to be constantly pointing out to people: if you make abortion illegal, it will also affect your or your wife's/sister's ability to have an emergency delivery (in case the fetus dies) without being involved in a criminal investigation, etc.

Point out the consequences and people who in Nick "wanker" Kristof's (approximate) words "don't want to see women and doctors go to jail" will realize they are pro-choice.

Heck - I've even convinced fundies (although there is a racial element here ... the fundies involved were Black and hence, if you'll excuse my racism, a bit more pragmatic, tolerant and willing to understand how laws can be oppressive to minorities, than a bunch of crackers would be) to oppose restrictions on abortion and support civil unions for gays.

Even if we won't win over the Religious Reich, even in the fundie community there are enough people who can be won over to our side when they realize our position works and addresses even their concerns.

We don't need to moderate our positions ... we just need to explain them in a way that people can support them.

GravatarGodwin's been suspended.

It sure has.

All georgie has to do now is grow a moustache, and the nightmare will be complete.

Gravatarpuzzledwoman--I just want to win, nothing else really matters. If my penis wasn't so shriveled, I might be able to get beyond that.

GravatarOh Jesus Bunker...what is it with Dems and violence. You can't effectively articualte your ideas well enough to convince the vast majority of Americans so you resort too violence.

Well let me just say violence never solved anything...except: The American Independence, The French-Indian War, The Spanish-American War, The Civil War (of course if Robert "KKK" Byrd had his way, Black America would still be enslaved), WWI, WWII, the Collapse of Communism, the Invasion of Iraq and the "liquidation" of the Saddam Hussein Regime.

GravatarCall and inform the good senator's staff that you're shocked that such a good Christian man is such a big fat liar.

So, you want us to lie?

I, for one, am not shocked in the least.

GravatarOT: I just relocated, don't know anyone, thought I'd check out one of them there Drinking Liberally shindigs.

Turns out, in this fine red city, the folks think drinking liberally means drinking a lot. And nothing else. I swear. I first started to catch on when I got nothing but blank stares for trying to make some comment about the bankruptcy bill. Before long, one woman informed me that she "is certainly NOT liberal, oh no way, definitely not LIBERAL" and told me that once I start earning real money, I won't want to give half of it away either. Other gems of conversation included gay bashing and whining about illegal immigrants. There was not one "liberal" in the group, but worse, there was no one who had a clue about current events, politics ... I finally had ask them how they started meeting through the website. The only answer was, oh we've been doing this for over 7 years. I have no idea what that means.

I have a decent sense of humor and these people weren't joking. Although, in retrospect it was quite funny.

Thought I'd give warning. Course, maybe I didn't know the secret handshake or something.

GravatarShorter Atriotroll:

I'm a stupid moron with an ugly face and a big butt and my butt smells and I like to kiss my own butt.

GravatarThe cable companies will have nothing to do with that whackjob, unless losing money is something they enjoy.

Remember the bottom line is the most important line in all of *Christendom*.

GravatarYeah NTodd, but it wouldn't be the first time that the Left fed off it's own dead. What they're doing to Lieberman and Biden is disgusting.

Lord help anyone who disagrees with them in the slightest. Their heads will roll.

Kind of like what Hitler and Stalin did now that you mention it.

GravatarHow do you get the country back on track when you're just killed Amtrak?
Big Daddy Mars

That's the whole point! We have to get those dangerous trains off the tracks before we can get the country back on.

Sheesh.

GravatarBunker...I thought you were an asshole until the Simpson's reference.

OK, you're still an asshole, but THAT was pretty funny!

GravatarTena, You're right. Cable TV has too much money at stake to let the FCC rule them. The Congress will not win this one.

GravatarIf Strom Thurmond had been elected president, we wouldn't have all these "problems" that we have today.

Y'know like uppity negroes who don't know what's good for them, and vote Democratic.

Gravatar"NTodd...great distinction. And the difference in policy is?"

Hitler did not enact any Socialist policies. The name of the Nazi party was a sham to fool the people.

Kind of like "Compassionate Conservatiism".

GravatarI don't know how you can say that, I've been comparing prices between cities in CA, and train is way cheaper. Slower, maybe, but cheaper.
And train from NY to DC is faster and cheaper than flying.
- Karin

My brother has never been able to find a train fare cheaper than airfare from NorCal to SoCal. Maybe the same price, but never cheaper.

Certainly the train from NY to DC is faster and cheaper than flying, but if you can carpool with even one person (and you have a situation where you don't have to worry about parking once you get to DC), it's cheaper to drive than to take the train (though maybe not with gas prices so high and tolls going up ... still if you can carpool with two people, driving is cheaper than the train).

There is no excuse for this: the train should definitely be cheaper.

GravatarLord help anyone who disagrees with them in the slightest. Their heads will roll.

Kind of like what Hitler and Stalin did now that you mention it, or Tom Delay.

GravatarThe irony is that the same day the Senate votes to approve drilling in ANWR - something they justify by claiming it will help our "energy independence" - they also approve a massive cut to public transportation funding.

Here is a brain teaser even our resident troll can solve. What is the relationship between public transportation and energy independence?

GravatarLet's see if any of this seems current:

a) In the 1920s, Hitler’s German Workers’ Party (pre Nazi term) adopted a “Programme” with twenty-five points (the Nazi version of a constitution). In point twenty-four, their intent clearly demonstrates, from the very beginning, their stand in favor of a “positive” Christianity: “We demand liberty for all religious denominations in the State, so far as they are not a danger to it and do not militate against the morality and moral sense of the German race. The Party, as such, stands for positive Christianity, but does not bind itself in the matter of creed to any particular confession...”

b) The Nazi regime started a youth movement which preached its agenda to impressionable children. Hitler backed up the notion that all people need faith and religious education: “By helping to raise man above the level of bestial vegetation, faith contributes in reality to the securing and safeguarding of his existence. Take away from present-day mankind its education-based, religious- dogmatic principles-- or, practically speaking, ethical-moral principles-- by abolishing this religious education, but without replacing it by an equivalent, and the result will be a grave shock to the foundations of their existence.” – Adolf Hitler (Mein Kampf)

c) The Nazi regime began to control schools insisting that Christianity was taught.

d) The Nazi regime included anti-Semitic Christian writings in textbooks and they were not removed from Christian doctrines until 1961.

e) The Nazi regime having full blown power over the people began to forcibly convert all its military.

Nazi Belt Bucklef) The Nazi regime forced the German soldiers to wear religious symbols such as the swastika and they placed religious sayings on military gear. An example here is this German army belt buckle (I believe my Opa had one) which reads “Gott Mit Uns”. For those of you who do not speak German it is translated as “God With Us”.

g) The German troops were often forced to get sprinkled with holy water and listen to a sermon by a Catholic priest before going out on a maneuver.

h) The Nazis created a secret service called the “SS Reich” that would act as spies on the dealings of other citizens. If anyone was suspected of heresy (Going not only against the Socialist party but CHURCH DOCTRINE) they would be prosecuted.

GravatarJesus Huh?Where am I?,

Now THAT'S damning! I guess I'll cancel my plans for tommorrow night.

GravatarHere is a brain teaser even our resident troll can solve. What is the relationship between public transportation and energy independence?

Democrats are a bunch of baby killers. Does that answer your question?

Oops, wrong talking point. Democrats are like Hitler! Wait, wrong one again...

GravatarAnd this is always nice:

“We were convinced that the people needs and requires this faith. We have therefore undertaken the fight against the atheistic movement, and that not merely with a few theoretical declarations: we have stamped it out.” -Adolf Hitler, in a speech in Berlin on 24 Oct. 1933

GravatarBecause, you know, one-party government was really big with the commies. And look what great results it produced for them!
Jennifer

Lets not forget Saddam's love of a one party state.

GravatarCall and inform the good senator's staff that you're shocked that such a good Christian man is such a big fat liar.

Why would we be shocked ... we're supposed to lie. As I wrote in a letter to someone or other once:

"we are deceivers yet true"

GravatarOT, but Frank Rich's latest column on Enron and propaganda is very interesting. Don't know if I believe him that the tide may be turning, though.

GravatarBTW, Hitler was a socialist.

And North Korea be a democratic republic, lassie.

AMTRAK's still a waste of money.

Yeah, that be relevant to what ye lied about.

Now about that significant other...does he/she exist?

Well, now lassie. Ye will have tae refresh me memory or are ye just making this shite up as well?

A special St Paddy's day blessing for ya, James Joyce. "May the seven terriers of hell sit on the spool of your breast and bark in at your soul-case."

GravatarUm, the attack of the backslash was me.

GravatarDead fetus...Hitler...Byrd...duhhhhhhhhh

GravatarThe Midwest takes it on the chin:

...Most Democrats and four Republicans urged continued federal sponsorship, arguing that urban and rural travelers across the country, and especially in poor areas, rely heavily on the train service.

...

Bush administration officials have argued that the federal government must stop subsidizing passenger rail service and force Amtrak to shut down little-used routes.

Bush's 2006 budget calls for elimination of Amtrak's operating subsidy but sets aside $360 million to keep passenger trains running through the busy northeast corridor.

But the blue states do okay.

GravatarYeah BD,

It ALL seems familiar. Everytime I listen to you prancing ladies neighhhhhh. It sounds exactly like Germany in the '30s and '40s.

Oh Lord and it seems like I stepped in some dogshit on the way.

Go away Dave, er I mean...shadow poster (scrapesthe bottom of his shoe).

GravatarUF - It's a money thing. Broadcast TV gets the airwaves for free. Cable does not. The government can regulate what goes out over those free airwaves - that's the way it was set up in the beginning.

Cable completely turns that whole dynamic on its head. What we're far more likely to see happen is regular network television truncated, censored and limping even worse than it does now.

Unless the networks wise up and fight back.

GravatarJames Joyce - Your entire mentality springs from a deep well of insecurity, of the fear that you aren't as good or as smart as other people, which sad to say in this case is true.

Aspiring to fool stupid people is not setting your sights very high. Stupid people are easy to fool. It's part of being stupid. So therefore, not much of a "victory". Anyone can fool a fool. Anyone can stampede fearful mindless sheep. It takes a person of quality to herd them in a constructive direction, something you're not familiar with.

Like the rest of your ilk, when you cannot articulate a logical train of thought, you resort to shouting, name-calling, shifting to other topics, etc. Much as you did in your last post, touting violence as a way to "solve problems". Which is not surprising, since you think insults and shouting constitutes a "winning" argument, regardless of how wrong the one doing the shouting is.

Apes sort things out this way: they fling feces at one another, pound on their chests and scream at one another, and if that doesn't end the dispute, they fight. While people of your low intellect who are easily amused might find watching apes fling poo at one another to be entertaining, I'm not aware of any pressing need or critical issue that excrement-tossing has ever solved.

But stupid people, such as yourself, who are both easily fooled and easily amused, come away from watching such a contest with a sense of satisfaction, as though something has actually been accomplished.

The only cure for your brand of stupid is, unfortunately, death. It's congenital; it cannot be remedied. The flip side of the coin - the good news as it were for those of us who are not stupid - is that no matter how much you piss in the pool in which we all must swim, no matter how much you befoul your own (and our) environment with your foolishness, believing all the time that you are "winning" - we'll always be smarter than you. Always.

Chew on that.

Gravatarhow would he and his wife liked it if the "emergency delivery" of the fetus in (or after) which it ended up dying was investigated like a homocide?

DAS, lest we forget "A BILL to amend and reenact § 32.1-264 of the Code of Virginia, relating to reports of fetal deaths"

And I quote:

A fetal death report for each fetal death which occurs in this theCommonwealth shall be filed, on
a form furnished by the State Registrar, with the registrar of the district in which the delivery occurred or the abortion was performed within three days after such delivery or abortion and shall be registered
with such registrar if it has been completed and filed in accordance with this section [...]

And here was the Kompassionate Konservative Kicker:

When a fetal death occurs without medical attendance, it shall be the woman's responsibility to
38 report the death to the law-enforcement agency in the jurisdiction of which the delivery occurs within 12
hours after the delivery. A violation of this section shall be punishable as a Class 1 misdemeanor.

GravatarO\\\\\\\\\\\\\\,

OH JESUS! Not even I would invoke the name Frank Rich. He's lucky to have a hot wife. If she hadn't sucked-off Slick Willy good, he'd a never gothis pardon.

Where is he these days anyway?

And you "Progressives" have the GALL to lambaste Enron and LOVE former Enron Advisor Paul Krugman!

GravatarTom Delay is the reincarnation of Hitler, that's why I like him so much.

GravatarIt ALL seems familiar. It sounds exactly like Germany in the '30s and '40s.

How I love the good old days.

GravatarClinton...Krugman....help me, I'm getting dumber by the minute...

GravatarJennifer...if you can't express yourself without making your ideas understood, don't bother. You're only wasting your breath.

Hat Tip - Calvin...of Calvin and Hobbes Fame.

Gravatarbelieving all the time that you are "winning"

heh.

GravatarYeah NTodd, but it wouldn't be the first time that the Left fed off it's own dead. What they're doing to Lieberman and Biden is disgusting.

For a while, I was thinking that you're not a dumb, bad troll. I have just revised my opinion.

And yes, that's an ad hominem.

GravatarI love winning the argument to the point where I get shadow trolled!

Gotta go forage. Don't worry Snow...I'll be back!

GravatarLate to the St Paddy's day thread, am I? Me Limerickman forebears would...

well, I don't think they'd give a shit.

ERIN GO FUCK BUSH!

AND SANTORUM JUST BECUZ!

HIC!

GravatarYour entire mentality springs from a deep well of insecurity, of the fear that you aren't as good or as smart as other people, which sad to say in this case is true.

But I'm articualte, and who cares what you think anyways? You're just like the nazis, and Bill Clinton got a blow job.

I wonder what those are like, I have a feeling that this device I bought online isn't as good as the real thing.

GravatarI have successfully convinced everyone that I'm too stupid to breathe.

I WIN!!!

GravatarMy brother has never been able to find a train fare cheaper than airfare from NorCal to SoCal. Maybe the same price, but never cheaper.

That's funny, I just went to Expedia and the cheapest flight from San Francisco to LA, tomorrow, is $244. If I look more than a week in advance, the price goes down to $188, changing planes in Las Vegas.
OTOH, by AMTRAK, it's either $56 or $66.

GravatarI won the argument, haha, look at me!

Time for lunch--coming mom!

GravatarIt's ok that Bush and company have stolen billions of our money - MY tax dollars - because Clinton "got away" with extramarital blow jobs.

GravatarArbeit macht frei.

GravatarNo problem. We'll just hire Bectal to bury the whole thing for a trillion dollars. That will fix everything.

GravatarThe great thing about being me is that I keep posting...even after I've left the building!

GravatarMeanwhile, one old Pennsylvanian Moravian gene says "What's the matter with thee?"
B-1 Bummer

What a coincidence. I've got one lonely old Choctaw gene sharing a pint in the corner with a Cherokee gene, muttering, "Honkey-ass bullshit."

HALITO

GravatarJust because I don't have time today I'd like to combine two themes. Probably the very best St. Patrick's Day I ever had was 20 years ago when my fiance and I went to Amtrak station for schedules to figure out our honeymoon and then spent rest of the afternoon with friends at Kelly's Pub. I'm feeling misty so I's be goin' now.

GravatarThat's funny, I just went to Expedia and the cheapest flight from San Francisco to LA, tomorrow, is $244. If I look more than a week in advance, the price goes down to $188, changing planes in Las Vegas.
OTOH, by AMTRAK, it's either $56 or $66.
- Karin

I'll have to tell my brother.

He was able to book flights (round trip) from SF to Ontario (albeit months in advance) for about $120. In order to go from SF to LA (which then raised the question of how he would get from LA to the parents' place in San Berdoo Co.) by Amtrak, he was finding prices to be about $60 each way.

About the same price, really - but with fewer issues of transportation once he go to So.Cal. and a shorter time in transit.

And if you can fly someone from SF to Ont for less than $150, you'd think you could send 'em by train for even less.

Part of this is a volume issue: if more people take trains, prices will go down, but more people won't take trains until prices go down.

A proper government subsidy, covering the costs of maintaining the rails, etc., would go a long way.

GravatarHappy birthday, TJ (or O'TJ if you prefer for today!).

It might well be cheaper to carpool, even with just two drivers, from NY to DC, than it is to take the Amtrak, but my experience, having done it both ways (also flew), is that the agita from driving eats away at any financial savings. The highways around DC are seriously congested (practically from the moment you hit 495, in my experience) and sitting in a car, steaming, for half an hour in "rush hour" traffic is much harder on the nerves than sitting for the same half hour in a comfortable Amtrak car, reading or using your computer.

And the nice thing about train stations is that they are, unlike airports, in the middle of the city you're heading to, so you don't have the additional expense of getting from the terminal to your actual destination.

GravatarI'm back. just love European Chicken. Kind of tastes like the French.

NTodd,

Interesting response to my Lieberman/Biden post.

But, how was I worng?

GravatarFrank Rich...Mark Rich...what's the difference?

My God, I am stupid.

GravatarHe voted for Amtrak before he voted against it.

GravatarBush must be spending his political capital.

If he can't get SS mangled, at least he'll get revenge on New York.

GravatarWah wah wah, cry cry cry. A Republican that you all hate anyway said one thing and voted another way. Big fucking deal. Slow news day, nothing substantial to bitch about, so Atrios gets his lemmings in a frenzy over this.

And you freaks laugh at freepers!

GravatarWhat kind of world will we be living in 10 years from now? No public transportation, no health care, the public estate going to hell, environmental catastrophe, states near bankruptcy trying to deal with federal budjet cuts...

GravatarDAS, I imagine you could find a real cheap flight,if you go way in advance, but my travel plans are always at the last minute. And I see Jet Blue goes from Oakland to Long Beach for $69, but for some reason they don't fly from Oakland to Ontario.

GravatarSpeaking of moonbats, have you read the latest on Colorado's nuttiest professor? From 9News:

DENVER - A 12-year-old audio tape of an angry answering machine message left by Ward Churchill has surfaced.

Much of the audio is unintelligible, but a person identifies himself as Ward Churchill on the tape.

The message was left on Vernon Bellecourt's answering machine in 1993. Bellecourt is a leader of the American Indian Movement...

9News provides the audio and a partial transcript:

"You siphoned a half million ripped off from Gadhafi.

How many other thousand dollars have you taken from the native people's struggles?

You keep it up and I won't just stand and look at you next time.

You understand what I'm saying fat boy turned skinny?

You decrepit old (expletive)"

Lovely.

GravatarHitler was a socialist? As in one who advocates state ownership of the means of production and distribution? If Hitler was a socialist, it was news to the major German corporations like Krupp and Siemens who backed him. Jeebus, you'd think the wingnuts would learn a little history once in a while, if only by accident.

Gravatar"But the creepiest bit in the article actually had nothing to do with gays or sodomy. The couple took Gabriel’s body home to let their three other young children see and hold the baby before burying him ... .”

This is a child she was told NOT to have because they knew early on that it was doomed.

But, being good Catholics, she went right ahead, putting her own life in danger.

What were her other kids supposed to do when they got left without a mother?

Oh, never mind - I guess nannies and nurses raise their kids anyway!

Gravatar"Jeebus, you'd think the wingnuts would learn a little history once in a while, if only by accident."

But they're only interested in MURKAN history cuz MURKA is the only country worth learnin' about.

Them other furrin countries - they don't count!

GravatarI thought Rick (Man-on-Dog) Santorum was just your average prissy right-wing liar and homophobe, but he's far, far worse!

He's a dreaded FLIP-FLOPPER!

FLIP-FLOPPER! Do you hear me?

And he wants to run for president in 2008? Forget about it!

Imagine the TV commercials:

"Rick Santorum -- he argued to save Amtrak BEFORE he argued to kill it!"

Rick, you're toast.

You and your Republican pals equate FLIP-FLOPPING with treason!

You'll be impeached before you ever get to the New Hampshire Primary.
