I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

GravatarJesus. 40. They'll be calling up my WWII vet dad pretty soon. Bastards.

GravatarDon't worry 'bout a thing, Jonah. I'll look out for the missus.

GravatarBreak out the White Feathers!

GravatarWhy do I feel like we are a defeated country. When do they lower the inlistment age down to 15 and provide a free copy of America's Army at sign up?

GravatarYeap, I just sent the story to my 35 year old Rush/Fox/Hannity/O'Lielly nephew that now it is time for him to enlist, too.

I am confident if Jonah enlist a deluge of all of those single, white, 18-25 year old males who love W. so much will enlist, too.

GravatarI meant enlistment.

GravatarOut of excuses, Jonah. Oh wait, your family cannot afford your loss of pay. But surely your patriotic employers will continue to pay you like Sears is continuing to pay that fella with 11+ kids.

GravatarWhite Feathers™

He can at least use them to tickle Mommy's bunghole if Liddy's busy.

GravatarNot just Jonah, but Beinart and every other war monger under the age of 40

Gravatarthe security and stability needs here in the Islamic Republic Of Iraq are (or should be) of paramount concern for all rightthinking freedom and democracy lovers.

Ibrahim and I both look forward to meeting this Jonah Goldberg, and all of his ilk, as they help us construct a world where Sharia Spirit can keep on spreading.

and now, let the beatings begin.

GravatarCrap. I turned 40 recently, and thought I was safe.

I guess I'll just have to claim to be a gay linguist. (Oh, wait...)

GravatarI'll be forty in seven months. I volunteer to give up my slot in the US Armed Forces for Jonah, who is gung-ho to go.

Gravatarhow many 40 year olds to they imagine will sign up? i'm 40. didn't join when i was young and i'm sure as hell not going to join now.

GravatarAnd I'll look out for your kids while you're gone. They will be in good hands with me. After all, I'm a professional white Christian.

GravatarGodspeed Jonah! Thank you for protecting the Father...er...Homeland from the menacing godless brown people. You have the gratitude of our proud nation. Booya!!!

GravatarOnly thing Jonah's pasty ass would be good for is as a decoy, turn him loose in Baghdad with a sandwich board.

GravatarYou liberal numskulls will do anything to put America in a bad light, won't you?

GravatarSome of us have essential jobs and essential roles in keeping up morale and the war effort on the Home Front. We are supporters of USA and Bush and we are needed here. After all, the enemy is not ust islamic. Often, they are leftists, liberal, Democratic. They are WITH the terrorists since they hate our country. You cannot argue that.

GravatarBut Jonah is kinda tubby, right? Wouldn't they have to do something about his gut?

GravatarAmen, mk. This forum is full of loosers who would support any terror or bloodshed just to make Bush look bad. Sad.

GravatarSo, morallaw, how old are YOU?

GravatarOh goddamn - 40? This is really ridiculous.

They cannot continue to have all of these military Big Adventures without a draft. Who are they kidding?

GravatarAnti Liberal Agitator,

Dude, that is one of the funniest websites I've looked at in a while. Are you some kind of lawyer? If so, the southern states are even more retarded than I previously believed.

GravatarWhy do you not support your country, liberal scum?

GravatarSend a white feather to Jonah!

GravatarWhite House hooker.

The scandal-plagued Bush administration.

Right wing zealots.

GravatarEkCenTriK,

Interesting that they are willing to raise the enlistment age isn't it?

Why do I heard the sound of a draft on the wind?

Oh...and the costs of just keeping the military mended just to fight this rag-tag bunch of rag-heads? Odd that we have the strongest military on the face of the earth , but we're dogged down in dirt hovels.

Yeah..it's Vietnam all over again.

regards

.

GravatarGo for it Jonah, no way that those insurgents can be as scary as Janeane Garofalo.

GravatarThey're also lowering the fitness standards to allow comatose patients to serve. The 101st fighting vegetables.

GravatarAnd ALA there...of course he will countenance the worst excesses of Bush et al (100,000 Iraqis dead, 1500 US soldiers, Abu Ghraib, winking at Tom Delay) so he can keep pretending W is some kind of fucking hero.

Whatever he's smoking, keep me the fuck away from it. I want my brain cells for a few more years.

GravatarI hope he takes all these delusional, chicken shit, un-American trolls, with him.

GravatarOlaf - how many 40 year olds to they think will sign up?

Really. Most 40 year olds have gotten their lives settled. They have families and jobs that they've likely had for years now - why would any of them give those things up? I can envision someone who is still going nowhere at 40 joining - but man, that's going to be a feckless bunch of soldiers.

GravatarFor probably the first time in my married life, I am glad that my husband has terrible vsion (it's so bad he's not even eligable for Lasik). Now that he's (again) of draft age, his vision is so crappy I'm not too worried that he'd get shipped anywhere.

GravatarWhy is it all the most celebrated rightwing war-lovers are such demonstrable cowards?

I mean the list of chickenhawks runs from the war-time deserter, Bushboy, to Cheneychins, to Flush Limbo, to the thug DeeeeLay, to Hastert and on and on.

Hypocrisy runs deep and is endemic in rightwing circles.

GravatarThe 101st fighting vegetables.

I really shouldn't laugh.

GravatarThis forum is full of loosers

Well, it certainly attracts some losers who can't spell.

GravatarAnti Liberal Agitator, after reading your website I realize you and all Republicans are too stupid to breathe. I recognize the error of believing anything Bush says. US out of Iraq, NOOOOOOW (as Giblets would say).

GravatarSenate session starting up on C-span 2 for Terri Shiavo. Should be quite the circus.

GravatarOh yeah....

I'll bet Cheny will be on the committee that decides who can and cannot be drafted. After all, he has first hand knowledge how people can play the system to their persoanl advantage.

regards

.

GravatarIf I sign up inside Eyerack, isn't my enlistment bonus tax-free? Would someone roll me over there, please?

GravatarLiberals are all chicken, They would surrender to the French, the UN, or the Slims before standing up for our country and Our President. Please leave the USA to those of us who love her.

GravatarMaybe some of these independently wealthy , new economy computer geeks can join up.

GravatarI know it's sometimes difficult to separate the real brownshirts from the satirical, but come on, guys...!

GravatarJust imagine all the hernias, chest pains and bad backs the V.A. will need to gear up for.

Gravatar"Liberals are all chicken"

So, by that comment, I assume you're posting from Iraq?

GravatarThe Slims? Are they a band?

GravatarThis forum is full of loosers

Well, it certainly attracts some losers who can't spell.

Oh, was *that* what he meant? I was thinking "What's wrong with that? The looser the better!"

GravatarIf ALA met a Frenchman with a loaf of bread and a bottle of wine, he'd pee his pants.

Probably be afraid he'd have his R's rolled to death.

Gravatarwho the fuck are the slims?

GravatarI'd be in Iraq if I was younger, but I served in the Nam unlike any of you, and I didn't come back bad mouthing the USA. I love the USA. YOu don't. Fuck you.

GravatarAnti-Liberal Agitator

Fuck you, you terrorist lover, you don't give a rat's ass about our country.

GravatarWhat we need to do is start the draft but make the age 65 & higher. That will reduce the number of Social Security recipients and make Bush's privatization plan economically feasible.

GravatarJonah Goldberg looks like a 14 year old fat kid.

GravatarALA, the day I let the likes of YOU tell me what I do and don't love, it'll be a cold day in hell.

GravatarYou are so deluded. YOu will be dhimmis when they take over without fireing a shot. You liberals want to kill babies but not defend the USA. You are so gay.

Gravatarso did bob hope anti, so did bob hope. now be a nice little wanna-be and stop telling stories.

-J.T.

GravatarAnti-Liberal Agitator- Pleasse don't try to talk while Liddy Dole is sitting on your face. You attempts to do so are agitating enough.

Gravatarwho the fuck are the slims?

Aren't they those little people who live in your computer? The ones with the green jewel things over their heads?

GravatarJust because they raised the enlistment age to 40, that doesn't necessarily mean that if they re-institute the draft the age ceiling for draftees will be 40, does it?

Love them Repug family values - now destroying families of all ages. If the military doesn't break you up, the bankruptcy statute will.

And god help you if your spouse slips into an irreversible coma...

GravatarGoopers are always trying to save the brain-dead like Terry Shiavo or the "unborn" regardless of the woman's who's carrying the fetus wants.

But when it comes to living people, it's they have no hesitation unleashing "shock and awe" and killing tens of thousands of innocent women and children or doing little or nothing while 50,000 people/day die of starvation or for basic sanitation.

Hypocrisy is the rightwing disease and when combined with their callous sanctimoniousness, it stifles life on earth.

GravatarWho will be the next fucking idiot to follow in Micahel Kelly's dumbshit footsteps?

GravatarSupport the troops. Get them the fuck out of Iraq.

Gravatari still can't figure out who the slims are a-l-a. give me a hint.

GravatarPlease leave the USA to those of us who love her.

In a manly, heterosexual way, of course.

GravatarAnti Liberal Agitator, now I understand your weird raving. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder fucked up your mind, so that you now are a rabid Roy Moore supporter. Well, help is on the way, if you get down to your local VA before Bush cuts all veteran's benefits.

GravatarJonah will wash out in the fatbody platoon by failing to do one fucking pushup.

GravatarOT, but a lot of people have expressed sympathy for the parents of Terri Schiavo. Well, fuck that noise:

"My daughter is in the building behind me, starving to death," Mary Schindler said. "We laugh together, we cry together, we smile together, we talk together. She is my life."

Lady, you are a sick, delusional basket case. Get some fucking help.

GravatarYou are so gay.

Am I suppose to take that as an insult?

GravatarLiberals, please stop denigrating our troops or our president. This is treason. You will be punished and go to jail, or worse. A new day is dawning and you will not be able to get away with such poisonous crap in the future.

Gravatarwho the fuck are the slims?

Gravatar40....

Interesting.....

Most of the pompous asses I've run into that are pro-bush, pro-war, anti-liberal are in that 35 to 45 year age bracket. Never been in the military, but are loud and obnoxious boosters all because they "know" they'll never be asked to back up their patriotism...until now!

I wonder how many will have "legit" excuses for not signing up. I'll wager they will be toning down their rhetoric now that they may be subject to serving the country they are so vainly proud of.

regards

Gravatar"Who will be the next fucking idiot to follow in Michael Kelly's dumbshit footsteps?"--The Fool

Well Fool, now they've learned their lesson. Since Kelly, they're smart enough to let the brown people and the poor white trash die for them. Seems they're "too important on the home front" to put their own pasty white asses anywhere near an IED.

It's open-season persecution on secular university students who embrace Christianity – at least that's the picture portrayed in a recent Christian Science Monitor article. The report followed the story of a Christian graduate student who enrolled in a secular West Coast school and faced the scorn of anti-Christian professors. Regularly, we hear these types of stories: traditional ideas facing the condescension and mockery of atheistic and agnostic elitism that possesses many secular schools.

For too long have we hidden behind the comforts of Christian subculture, with our Christian music, Christian book publishing, Christian universities and other Christian safe havens. While those may be good for a time to build each other up, it's also true that never facing up to the realities of depraved humanity and the marketplace of secular ideas leaves us in a wholly ignorant state. More than that, it leaves us in a place where we only cater to ourselves, where we're not living out the Gospel in godless places.

If we refuse to attend secular universities for fear of the ideas of paganism and atheism, then we fail to regard the Gospel as having any power at all. And, if we continue this downward spiral of hiding out in our own subculture, then we reinforce the battle lines in this culture war, failing to reach out with the same love that was given to us when we were enemies of God.

GravatarMilitary service should be mandatory for all privledged kids in America. These people simply shouldn't be accepted unless they've seen some hard knocks.

GravatarMoad-Dib

The scary part is not that a draft is in the offing, but that they will do anything to avoid a draft. Their all volunteer army is not what they expect it to be since recruitment is diminished. When you start bringing in the older crowd, on the face it tells me that we no longer have the army of Clinton and have one that is becoming rag tag. Think about the countries that when things began to go downhill, did this sort of thing. Yep a draft is highly likely, but not on the basis of Viet Nam, it is one in which we are running on vapors. A draft would have made sense 3 years ago, integrating the new troops with the old on a sane basis. Now they are facing a draft with a war laden with stigma, highly questionable on its need and with all the other factors racing in. A 40 years is going to think about his family, his home, his career, his savings and retirement. Unless he is a recent member of the service, he is no longer of military caliber and his input questionable. It would be one thing if we all, and I mean we all, thought the hun was at the door banging on it, but time has gone by and it is not true, we know its not. The pro-war troll bangers here and in the general public are no different, they know it is bogus, that these bastards have screwed everything into the ground. If they really did believe it, they would have been begging for a doorway into the military to do their duty ages. Instead, like us, they hang out on blogs, go to work everyday and mow the lawn on the weekends.

Gravatardave - Lady, you are a sick, delusional basket case. Get some fucking help.

Goddamn, that poor woman has been pushed over the edge by the fucking nut jobs on the Religious Right.

They seem to have that affect on a lot of woman.

GravatarBa'al--

Thanks a fucking lot. If we were to offer that kind of stuff to YOU, the aroma would NOT be pleasing.

GravatarAnti-Liberal Agitator sez,...

"Liberals, please stop denigrating our troops or our president. This is treason. You will be punished and go to jail, or worse. A new day is dawning and you will not be able to get away with such poisonous crap in the future."

Your fearless leader admires Teddy Roosevelt. here's one of teddy's quotes:

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

Sit on it, mate, then shove off!

regards

.

GravatarBefore I go back and read all the comments, two thoughts:

1. Wasn't it just a month ago, that the media was going with stories about how, recruitment was right on track? No need to worry about the all-volunteer Army?
This certainly gives the lie to that.

2. With the fuedalistic economic policy of this administration, there are certainly going to be more people for whom the Armed forces will be attractive.

Isn't everything going according to plan quite nicely?

Gravatari never pay any attention to 15 year old boys.

GravatarI'll wager they will be toning down their rhetoric now that they may be subject to serving the country they are so vainly proud of.

Pfft. They won't tone down their rhetoric, they'll just crank up their excuses.

GravatarHey, did anyone else go to an anti-war protest today?

We had about 300 people in the snow in Halifax. Marched from the commons, through downtown and to the American consulate. Speaches and such, stopped en route to hurl insults at a weapons manufacturer's office. Light snow and a biting wind, but everyone was in good spirits.

What else happened out there?

GravatarSorry for the typoes, didn't realize the rant got that long either.

GravatarI'm a Bushboy lover and a real American

I don't pay taxes and avoid military duty however I can

I love the USA

Or so I say

As I wave "old glory" and repeat Gooper propaganda deadpan!

GravatarIt's okay, he's still too old to be drafted. But say, having just been trained, did Jonah remember to register? Can't go back and do it if you didn't do it....

And lord, I know this is tiresome, but whiz, this is like the third or fourth major article covering issues of manpower weaknesses and the need to recruit, each one nosing a little bit closer to the 'd' word.... You know, once something actually creeps into the public discourse it becomes fair game, to hunt down or trap...

Gravatar(all embarrassed and blushing)
Hruughhmph, I have to go now..

GravatarI thought the American military had a "don't ask, don't tell" policy, so any and all homosexuals who want to help us build a better, more democratic form of Sharia, c'mon over. our security and stability needs are simply humongous.

Gravatarwhy do I get the feeling anti-liberal agitator is typing with one hand?

GravatarGoopers are always trying to save the brain-dead like Terry Shiavo

Being brain-dead, she's prime for recruitment into the Republican Party.

GravatarEben---FWIW, I saw "Westray" on Sundance Channel today. Talk about depressing...

GravatarEli,

"They won't tone down their rhetoric, they'll just crank up their excuses."

GravatarComeon liar: anti-liberal agitator

When, Where, What MOS

Gravatar"A new day is dawning"

Used to be you could say the sun would always come up in the morning. But with these punks, they will likely mess that up too.

Too much daylight is hazardous to the veracity of the average Republican politician and/or neo-con.

GravatarI paid Jim Guckert $250 to ream me up the ass, and he didn't even give me a reacharound. I told him I just got back from Veet Nam and he slapped me in the face with his dick.

GravatarI keep asking, but the trolls just won't answer. What are they afraid of?

I'll try again.

Is Karl Rove gay?

Has he had sex with Jeff Gannon, and did they have sex in the White House?

Concensus is Mehlman is gay. Doesn't that give the party of God and patriots a rather feminine "mystique?"

What about McClellan's cruising gay bars? What's that about? He's your spokes... "person." How do you feel about having a pansey front for your party?

Of the three, who do you think plays the man and who do you think plays the woman, or do you think they swap sides?

These are serious issues. How do you think Putin views W knowing that his senior staff prefer buggery to traditional moral values? And isn't that a reflection on you and the Republican Party?

You really need to face these issues before commenting on ours? It makes you appear effeminate when you don't.

GravatarIn Kyle Williams' book, "Seen and Heard," America's youngest national columnist takes on the establishment, offering clear evidence that a leftist agenda is at work in our nation.

Gosh, that leftest agenda is working so well they've taken over the presidency, both houses of congress and the surpreme court. Oh, wait a minute, that's the Republicans...

That 15-year-old needs to get laid, and quick. Any Eschatonians up to the task? Talk about your mercy fuck.

GravatarI guess we really know who hates America now... it's Jim Guckert, who wouldn't give a reacharound to a veteran.

GravatarSo have OxycontinBoy, O'Falafel, and Hannity been exhorting all of their viewers/listeners to go enroll? (Of course not, they don't want to lose their loyal base.) We should start calling in and asking why they have not been encouraging their fans to fight for freedom and apple pie (you know, that stuff Atrios hates).

Gravatari guess a-l-a was just a drive by or a parody. i still wish i knew who the slims were though.

GravatarGoddamn, that poor woman has been pushed over the edge by the fucking nut jobs on the Religious Right.

They seem to have that affect on a lot of woman.

Saw some report (on these threads?) that the parents had testified (years ago, now) that they would remove Terri's gangrenous limbs if it came to that (from bedsores; tells you the quality of care she's received that she doesn't have any today), even authorize open heart surgery, to keep her alive.

Sad, sad, that they are so delusional. Sad, sad, that so many people are willing to support them in their insanity (what else can we call it?). Actually, the latter are simply exploiting this family. As Athenae said on First Draft, this isn't about the protestors, or Tom DeLay, or Frist.

It's about a human body with no brain, being kept alive by autonomic responses and a feeding tube. The lack of water alone may end her existence before Congress can act (if only the Dems are wise enough to, say, simply stay away until after Easter).

GravatarAnti-Liberal Agitator is at the most 13 years old. He knows nothing about Nam.

GravatarEben--EWWW.....

I'm not a woman or a gay man, and I STILL got a shiver over that one...

GravatarThat is fucked UP. GWPDA, aren't you glad you got on the Civil Service board?

I smell a draft. The Times reported that over 6,000 have gone AWOL or just flat refused to show up for duty last year. A number of them fled to Canada with the help of Viet Nam vets.

GravatarI think Kyle Williams needs a good Guckerting (reacharound optional).

GravatarAnti,

do you have any idea how many non-veteran, john wayne wanna-be's, go around screaming "traitors!" and "treason!" all day long?

file some charges limp dick. then i'll sue your ass and i'll win.

-J.T.

GravatarSo I take it Kyle Williams is planning on attending one of those godless (or, worse, "pagan" -- cause there sure are a lot of multitheistic profs out there) (no offense, Oh Ba'al, you just haven't made many inroads yet, but I'm sure that's bound to change) universities?

Look for him to become Lieutenant Asshole Numero Uno in the Horowitz whining brigade ...

GravatarI never went down my mother, at least not since I impregnated her with that ultra-conservative 15 year old columnist...

GravatarWould you all stop making some of the suggestions about what Kyle needs. If this is a kid, it is pretty sleazy folks. The question should really be who is putting him up to this sort of thing.

GravatarBy the way, I think they need to try this in Washington D.C. as well.

GravatarJohnT--I saw a guard at a parking garage reading "Treachery" a couple days ago, and it was all I could do to not say "How much money did you waste on that pile of horseshit?"

GravatarAtrios beat to to the punch this morning on the Bobo's world, but now I've found this:

Child molesters still serving as priests

(Yuba City is California's Central Valley, often praised as the "midwest" of California.)

Yuba County District Attorney Pat McGrath said he will seek the extradition of a priest convicted of sexually molesting a minor in 1989, now that the Rev. Jose Luis Urbina has been discovered serving as a priest in Mexico.

Urbina fled the country after his 1989 conviction in a Yuba County court and later served for about a decade at his hometown parish in Navojoa, Mexico, the Dallas Morning News reported in its ongoing series on accused Roman Catholic priests who are now working in other countries...

In 2003, a then-33-year-old Yuba City man sued Urbina and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, alleging that Urbina molested him from 1980 to 1986, when he turned 17. The suit is pending in Sacramento County Superior Court.

In one instance, Urbina allegedly pointed a gun at the boy before molesting him...

The newspaper also reported that another former Sacramento diocesan priest under investigation for child molestation is working in a remote region in southern Mexico. The Rev. Garardo Beltran disappeared in 1991 after Sacramento police began investigating allegations that he molested two young girls.

The two priests have been wanted by local authorities for more than a decade.

GravatarOnly the most desperate of persons would ever enlist in the military now. How could they possibly throw their lives awway knowing they will probably apply for a non-combat position because the recruiter said they have plenty of such openings available only to find out that the non-combat position was contracted out to Haliburton which in turn sub-contracted out to some Kuwaiti firm which hired a bunch of Cambodians and Sudanese. Since they've already stated that people in non-combat positions are being transfered to combat roles, nobody is safe.

There is no way anyone would want to join the military today unless he were stupid as a rock or gets a hard-on just thinking about all the sand niggers he was going to kill.

I am a liberal and former Marine who enlisted at age 17, five days out of high school, in 1970.

My father, a liberal Democrat, was a Marine aviator during WWII and flew F4U's in combat.

My mother, a liberal Democrat, served as a Woman Marine in WWII.

When you make a ignorant assumption you show yourself to be the shallow fool that many beleive you are by your inane postings.

Perhaps the mext time you inform me just what branch of the service such noted hawks as Tom Delay, Rush limbaugh,Denny Hastert, Sean Hannity, Bill Frist, Bill O'Reilly, Dick Cheny, Jonah Golberg, or Rick Santorum served in.

Until then STFU you fecal matter on the shoe of life.

GravatarThat's so sweet! Zoe found a nice boy robot, and they're settling down and raising a little robot family!

As long as everyone involved is heterosexual and Christian, we got nothing against robots raising families.

GravatarWell I have an interesting speculation to pose.

I work for a defense contractor in Europe and other worldwide sites as deemed necessary to fulfill contractual obligations. I'm the only civilian at this locale. Everyone else I work with is retired military. I say this because they despise civilians even though they are civilians now...they haven't caught on yet.

Now these guys are proud that they are in the "active reserves". From what they tell me, they can be recalled back to active duty when situations arise. Most of them are in their early to mid 40's too.

I'm wondering if the military is considering recalling all those "active reserve" retired military back to shore up their manpower shortages. After all, these guys are drawing anywhere from 50% to 75% of their base pay. So the cost of bringing them back to active duty at full pay would be a cost savings over raw, green recruits.

GravatarThere used to be a time when the media would have laughed Bushboy out of office for the fraud, coward, liar, buffoon and depraved moron that he is.

But in today's FAUX NEWS, sycophantic corporate media time, Bushboy is treated with "respect," no matter how often he lies or blunders and no matter how egregiously!!!

What the hell! The 1500 + US soldiers who died in Iraq so far were probably not the son/daughter of any editor of any major news network, radio station or newspaper.

So long as Bushboy is "killing" other people's sons & daughters, why criticize?

GravatarRobert M Jeffers - You know, I was talking about that aspect of the situation earlier today. I read that her parents said that and rather than feeling badly for them, it turned my stomach, Robert. There's something very deeply selfish about that attitude, and it's unhealthy.

You do not mutilate and use and manipulate people whom you love. Frankly, her parents scare the shit out of me. I don't like them one damn bit.

I told this on a thread below, but after my mother came out of surgery to repair an aortal aneurysm, blood wasn't flowing into her left leg. They wanted to take her back into surgery and if necessary, amputate her leg. I said no - they could try to get blood flowing back in the leg, but nothing else.

I was closer to my mother than to any other human being I've known, except for my husband. I didn't think I could live without her - I loved her with my whole heart. I was not about to let them take her leg off to save her life. She would have killed me if she had lived. Killed me. They got the blood flowing, so the confrontation didn't develop. Believe me, I didn't want to lose my mother, but it wasn't about me any more.

GravatarNew revelations at gregpalast.com, proving what most of us already knew. How about it Anti-Liberal fuck head, did you read this?

Two years ago today - when President George Bush announced US, British and Allied forces would begin to bomb Baghdad - protestors claimed the US had a secret plan for Iraq's oil once Saddam had been conquered.

In fact there were two conflicting plans, setting off a hidden policy war between neo-conservatives at the Pentagon, on one side, versus a combination of "Big Oil" executives and US State Department "pragmatists."

"Big Oil" appears to have won. The latest plan, obtained by Newsnight from the US State Department was, we learned, drafted with the help of American oil industry consultants.

GravatarSince the birthdate on her driver's license seems to be in a constant state of retreat, Ann Coulter should certainly be under the age of forty by now, thereby insuring that she will do her patriotic duty and march right down to the recruiting station and tell Uncle Sam that she is here to make sure that she can forcefully persuade those Muslims to convert to Christianity. By enlisting, Ms. Coulter can serve as a shining example and pave the way for the rest of those patriotic conservatives {Hannity, Byron York, etc.} to serve in the military.

Congress Announces Deal in Schiavo Case

By SIOBHAN McDONOUGH, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Congressional leaders hoped a deal reached Saturday would clear the way for a brain-damaged woman to resume being fed while a federal court reviews the right-to-die battle between her parents and her husband.

"We think we have found a solution" to the Terri Schiavo case, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, said at a Capitol Hill news conference.

"We are confident this compromise addresses everyone's concerns, we are confident it will provide Mrs. Schiavo a clear and appropriate avenue for appeal in federal court, and most importantly, we are confident this compromise will restore nutrition and hydration to Mrs. Schiavo as long as that appeal endures," he said.

(snip)

Seeing as that branch exists to protect the rights of the minority, I find this all very chilling.

Little Benny of Clown Hall, for example. Anyone of them who support other people fighting their war should be shamed into enlistment or silence.

I can't comment on the parents of the corpse except to say that they are obviously in denial. I suspect they have been the subjects of a lot of lies about the impossible being possible.

What must Europeans think of this circus? What must people in the third world think of the resources being spent to keep a corpse animated when children and adults who have some hope of a real life die in their thousands every day?

America has gone insane and it can't be denied now.

GravatarAlong the same lines, I expect that this blog will stop addressing:

-- abortion (the author is not female)
-- military issues (the author has no military experience)
-- electoral politics (the author has no electoral experience)

if the idea is that those without experience shouldn't advocate on important issues that involve life and death, then all of the above qualify.

I await your silence.

GravatarI'd like to ask a few questions and make a couple of observations, if I may.

Why to commenters here keep referring to "little brown people"? Who are these people, and why does only the "Left" refer to them?

How many here know what "medical tests" were performed on Mrs. Schiavo, and which weren't? How responsive is she, really? Did she, in fact, say that she didn't want to be kept on life support, and when was this first mentioned as a rationale for discontinuing basic life support? Is starving her, an innocent woman, to death okay, but executing cop-killers by painless lethal injection just plain wrong?

Anyone who pooh-poohs those who join the US Military abrogates his/her claim of supporting the troops, I believe. Like MYOB.

What solutions does anyone here have to offer in place of current US foreign policies? I think the ones we have now are doing a fair job.

Finally, ALA cannot be a regular lurker, if it thinks calling commenters here "gay" counts as an insult ...

My understanding is, the parents have never had standing to bring suit in federal court. The legislation would "fix" this, so they can get the Federal courts to bat this around for another 15 years.

Europeans found it hard to swallow when Bush was elected first then were stunned into silence when he was re-elected.

This current fiasco is producing nothing but numbing silence. They have pretty much given up on trying to understand America and Americans.

As stated in other posts, there are more serious problems in the world that need to be adressed which aren't because America is transfixed on Martha Steward release from prison, Michael Jackson pedo trial, Scott Peterson murder trial and death sentence and whether or not to let a brain-dead person die.

GravatarDelay says the armed forces will have to get by without him, though he promises to buy war bonds---with South Korean money.

GravatarBut they want a draft.
I say that because the only places I see a draft advocated in on the left.

I think by raising the age of enlistment to 40, the military is hinting that it might need a draft.

They're not expecting to fill their manpower gap with the few hundred people in their late 30s who might enlist.

The talk of needing a draft on the left is mainly rhetoric. This is a very quiet, yet unmistakable sign from the military that they want one.

GravatarSnow--if the Dems are smart, they will play this very delicately during the recess, and let nothing come up while they stay home (or just away).

To stay away does no harm. If they stick to that, this sad story ends by Easter, or shortly thereafter, and like Elian Gonzalez, melts from the public consciousness, with no benefit to the GOP.

Gravatarthat was a great post akin to Patriotboy and his boss

Thanks Jim in LA.

Notice how the Repugs won't go near it? That's the giveaway. It's poison and there isn't an antidote.

And you know what? I won't give up until they address the "elephant" in the White House.

Is Karl Rove gay?

Is Mehlman gay?

Is McClellan gay?

Who was screwing, or getting screwed, by Gannon, and were they screwing in the White House?

Why won't the Republicans talk about it here? What are they afraid of? Liberals accept gays. So what's their problem?

GravatarThe Wash Post has the news on the so-called deal reached in Schiavo Case

"Congressional leaders announced a compromise that would allow the brain-damaged woman's case to be reviewed by federal courts that could restore her feeding tube."

"The measure would effectively take Schiavo's fate out of Florida state courts, where judges ordered the feeding tube removed on Friday, and allow Schiavo's parents to take their case to a federal judge. DeLay said that would likely mean restoration of the feeding tube "for as long as this appeal endures."

"Passage of the measure would require the presence of only a handful of lawmakers. Congress is on its spring recess, making it more difficult to locate lawmakers.

"President Bush, who has said he favors a "presumption of life" for Schiavo, would also have to sign the bill into law. Schiavo, 41"

Sounds to me that the repug's are taking advantage of the Congressional recess to gather a small group of like-minded individuals to ramrod this thing thru. And Bush is backing them 100%.

GravatarMoad-dib ... Must be tough. Do you just smile silently through gritted teeth?

GravatarThis is like the same bizarro logic by which it's racist to say that Condi could never get elected preznit 'cause she couldn't carry the South...

Because she's a woman....?

GravatarAw shit, you HAD to bring up Bobo...I was surfing past JMM, and read Kilgore and Harry Shearer.

Just sayin': Shearer is not NEARLY as entertaining as he is via audio.

Anywho, trying to give Kilgore the benefit of the doubt, I checked out the first two posts, and he was ON FIRE. Really ripping the Thugs a new one on Terry Schiavo and Bobo's latest on SS. Then, in the last two paras, he fucked it all up:

"Look, I am definitely not one of those people who despises, or even dislikes, David Brooks. He remains one of the funniest, and on occasions, most acute observers of big trends in the political landscape, especially in terms of cultural trends--traits that cover a multitude of sins."

Gee, Ed, just HOW MANY sins are we gonna "cover", here???

Jeebus. No WONDER we can't win...

GravatarJT - I will begin bends and thrusts immediately, followed by mountain climbers until my ass bleeds profusely.

GravatarThat's what I think about this change in enlistment age. It's a message from the military to the politicians.

I think all the politicians below the level of the HRH (the Head Retard Himself) know how fucked we are.

They're talking about maintaining our force levels in Iraq at about the current level into 2006. I don't see how it's possible.

GravatarMr. Jeffers, did you read this thread?

They cannot continue to have all of these military Big Adventures without a draft. Who are they kidding?

Why do I heard the sound of a draft on the wind?

Oh...and the costs of just keeping the military mended just to fight this rag-tag bunch of rag-heads? Odd that we have the strongest military on the face of the earth , but we're dogged down in dirt hovels.

Yeah..it's Vietnam all over again.

Military service should be mandatory for all privledged kids in America.

That last was by some anonymous person on this thread.

Who introduced a bill calling for a draft, last year?

GravatarYeah, that's what I got out of that NYT story, that the underground war-resisters movement is indeed alive and well and rapidly expanding in Canada. and in Ireland too, where the troops going to/from the Islamic Republic of Iraq have a layover in Shannon.

GravatarMoad-Dib - its starting to become a global crusade to snuff out Republicans in the US and that anything that can be brought to the light of day to prove Bush and the GoP are of the same caliber of Hitler and his henchmen the sooner action can be taken to nullify them.

For real? Because I might feel a little bit more hopeful about things if this is true. We could use the help.

GravatarLet me speak up for the Democrats in congress and the senate who don't want to touch this with a ten foot pole. It isn't their responsiblity, it is an obvious trap, it is something that if the Republicans want to persue they have no real power to stop it (short of a filibuster in the senate) and it will in the end prove to be a huge mistake for most Republicans to follow their patron saint of neuro-toxins off a cliff. Being in office entails choosing your fights. Molly Ivins once praised Barbra Jordan for never wasting time on a loosing fight. Bad as this is there are much more important issues for the Democratic leadership to fight for.

If you want to fight the Republican body snatchers, Just remember to ask anyone this question, would you like your brain dead body kept "alive" like this for more than a decade and a half because a bunch of political hagfish got hold of your corpse?

I have asked a few people who thought they were in favor of "life" in this case and have yet to see anything but revulsion on their faces when THEY are the subject of the debate.

GravatarJohn Tomato -

Born and raised. But I spent a decade in NM.

GravatarMrs. Ibrahim al-Jaafari,

Thanks for the tip on Judge Greer. Proves that not all Republicans are bad eggs. Some do understand the rule of Law.

Gravatar"many, many of them." that phrase still makes me cringe.

Gravatarcharles rangel, whis is a democrat and a sargent in viet nam, called for a draft to call attention to the fact that poor people do the brunt of the service.

GravatarWho introduced a bill calling for a draft, last year?
Special Ed | Email | Homepage | 03.19.05 - 6:33 pm | #

Special Ed. You're asking the wrong question.

Here's the correct one.

Will most "conservatives" support a draft if it becomes necessary to bring "democracy" to the Arab world?

Would you?

Because by raising the age of enlistment to 40, the military is saying "yes" it is.

Do you agee with them? Or does this in any way temper your enthusiasm for "Democracy" in the Middle East?

GravatarNo idea where that name came from.
Anyone else having this kind of trouble with HaloScan and their name? NTodd, you seem to be able to make it do your bidding.

Better just sign it EryPopt

Gravatar"This current fiasco is producing nothing but numbing silence. They have pretty much given up on trying to understand America and Americans."

They don't have to. The election was rigged.
Diebold is proof enough.

GravatarMoad'dib--I feel your pain. My part-time gig is with a military contractor, loaded with double-dippers and wannabe tough guys.

I did exchange brief sorrowful asides with one nice lady (an elderly secretary) on Nov. 3, but I sure as hell feel WAY in the minority.

GravatarWho introduced a bill calling for a draft, last year?

Don't be as asshole, Ed.

You know very well why he did that. What point was he trying to make?

Jesus, you people love to ignore the truth.

Gravatar(Brownshirt E);
What the fuck are you talking about?

Whatever Unka Karl tells him to.

Hey, beats dropping fries at Jack-in-the-Box!

GravatarMoad-Dib,

You are correct. I posted waaaay up thread about Viet Nam vets helping soldiers escape to Canada. I just wonder if this becomes really widespread whether Canadians might simply tell us to piss off.

GravatarSpecial Ed--not that I am of a similar mind, but I have heard more than one commenter here speak of breaking out the torches and pitchforks.

Talk is cheap, Captain Gota. That was my point. Commenters here have said that those who support the War should join the military.

But they, who oppose the War, may sit behind their keyboards.

GravatarBTW, Steve, posted this for you earlier (in case you missed it)...

GravatarBut they, who oppose the War, may sit behind their keyboards.
Special Ed | Email | Homepage | 03.19.05 - 6:39 pm | #

Bad logic. If you're against the war, then obviously you would have preferred that there be no war to oppose. You, on the other hand, are in favor of going out of our way to bring "democracy" to the Middle East. You're saying that the war wasn't a necessity (ie the WMDs argument was never the reason for going to war) but a war of choice.

But once again, you're missing the point. The military just raised the enlistment age to 40. This is a very strong signal they think a draft is necessary.

Would you support a draft if the military wants one? I realize you won't answer the question but I'm putting it out there so everybody can watch you not answer it.

Gravatarspec ed.,

do you recall all those who protested before the war? will you concede they were correct?

-J.T.

Gravatarmoabdib,

George Greer is a straight shooter. Had to leave his Baptist church after his pastor denounced him to the local press. He's currently guarded by deputies in an undisclosed location. and now Frist is threatening him with fines and imprisonment for doing his job. I guess there is a lesson in this for the non-wingnuts within the Rethuglican party.

GravatarTalk is ch--

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzz...

GravatarBut they, who oppose the War, may sit behind their keyboards.

Opposing a war is a far cry from supporting the enemy.

GravatarRangle "a sargent in viet nam"---

Actually he was an officer in Korea--and even won a medal, a bronze star, I think.

GravatarReally, kids - just ignore the moronic brownshirt fuck.

It's not interested in a "debate," or anything other than spreading the propaganda it's paid to spread.

GravatarNo, I will not support a draft.

pie, if you say I want to do something, and I deny it, that does not prove that I was considering it before you brought it up.

Yes, I understand why the bill was introduced. Grandstanding to raise the possibility of a draft to the American conciousness. The fact that the Democrats did it to "out" the Republicans does not automatically imply that the Republicans ever considered re-instating the draft.

Again, the only place I ever see the draft mentioned as a possibility or probability, is on the left. The right seems to universally abhor it.

GravatarSpecial Ed---and where are YOU serving?

We're on this side of the debate because we feel the stakes should be SLIGHTLY higher for geting people killed than whatever the fuck some brain-dead excuse for a president cobbles up for an excuse.

Yes, there are things we will fight for. If I read Dave Neiwert too much, sometimes I want to get combat training so I can blow away the next brownshirt idiot spewing about "patriotism." If I thought it would make a damn bit of difference, I might think harder about it.

But since you seem to think force solves everything, I ask again: where are YOU serving?

GravatarTena,

Too bad to aren't here to get an earfull from everyone what's wrong with America.

The British are to a fantastic job of picking up where the US MSM leaves off. The report by the BBC that Bush had plans prior to the invasion of Iraq to privitize the Iraqi oil fields is a prime example.

In short, the Europeans will do whatever it takes to bring to light what's wrong with American. It's up the the American public to do something about it.

By the way, it is my German landlord that compares bush and his cabinet to Hilter and his henchmen. Seeing how she has a degree sociology and works for the German social system with wayward children from broken families gives credit to her opinions. And she speaks fluent English too.

regards

.

GravatarSure glad I'm a member of my local draft board.

GravatarOpposing a war is a far cry from supporting the enemy.
Snow | Email | Homepage | 03.19.05 - 6:42 pm | #

Well, you know Glenn Reynolds says that people like me "are on the other side". So, contrary to Special Ed's argument, I obviously am doing my part to help the Iraqi resistence. Every time I go to an anti-war demo and burn a flag or spit on a soldier and call him a "baby killer" I'm going my little part to bring Islamofascism to Amerikkka.

But, once again, this is an ominous sign. The military doesn't think it's going to fill it's quota by raising the enslistment age to 40. It's a message. The message is "we need a draft". I'd be worried if I were an 18-24 year old male.

GravatarJohnTomato, which protesters protesting what?

Gravatardave,

the problem with monsterblog is too many covers, not enough full stories. but they are getting there.

ever check out Coconino Classics? The best comics from the 19th century.

GravatarCommenters here have said that those who support the War should join the military.

I'd be happy if you could admit that this whole war has been a huge, senseless mistake.

That you were wrong in supporting it, especially after realizing that Bush lied to get us there.

Then he failed to plan for the aftermath. Halliburton, missing funds, Abu Ghraib, death everywhere, chaos.

You continue to *support* this debacle?

You fool.

Gravatarharry lime,
my mistake. he was is korea, not vietnam. my researching is as good as my typing.

GravatarNo, I will not support a draft.

What if it's necessary to "build demoracy" in the Middle East.

What if it becomes suddenly obvious that to prevent another 9/11 we need to invade Iran and we can only do that with a draft?

Would you support it then?

GravatarSpecial Ed

Yes, I did. And I still don't hear anyone "on the left" advocating a draft.

What I hear is a great deal of concern, concern brought to a head when Rep. Rangel introduced a bill to reinstate the draft (which would have been a blessing to the National Guard, BTW).

I still don't hear any advocacy. A recognition of reality, which the present Administration is strenously ignoring. But no advocacy for a draft.

From anyone. At the moment. I expect that to change, eventually.

Gravatarspec ed,

those protesting the iraqi invasion for the wmd snipe hunt. surely your memory is good enough to recall the hundreds and hundreds of thousands of folks who took to the streets?

-J.T.

GravatarSo who's exactly is "supporting the troops" again?

While states are spending more to extend benefits to their National Guardsmen called to duty, the Bush administration is reducing benefits, Pennsylvania's Democratic governor said Saturday.

"While we the governors do all we can for our vets and our returning soldiers, our federal government has the primary responsibility for meeting the needs of our veterans," Gov. Ed Rendell said in his party's weekly radio address. "And that's why I find the president's budget cuts for critical veterans services to be unconscionable."

In his budget, President Bush has proposed charging certain veterans a $250 annual registration fee and raising from $7 to $15 the copayment those veterans pay for a 30-day supply of prescription drugs. The budget also would cut $293.5 million by limiting the veterans whose care in state-operated veterans homes is reimbursed by the federal government.

"During this time of war, it is absolutely the wrong time for our federal government to step back from any of its commitment to our veterans," Rendell said. "To do so would be penny-wise but pound-foolish."

GravatarCaptain Gota, I am a retired soldier. I served Stateside, Germany, Korea, Honduras, and GW I.

A draft would be counter-productive. An increase in numbers countered by a decrease in effectiveness. More cost for more problems.
I seriously doubt there are more than a handful of active military who want a draft.

GravatarThe right seems to universally abhor it.

Good. So do I. Then when it happens, we can join together to protest, right?

Gravatar...ever check out Coconino Classics?

Damn you! My wife will be around to punch you in the nose...

GravatarMrs. Ibrahim al-Jaafari,

I am truely sorry to hear about the plight of Judge Greer. This is suppose to be American, the land of the Free. It's nothing but words that carry no meaning anymore.

regards

GravatarWho was screwing, or getting screwed, by Gannon, and were they screwing in the White House?

I still say it was Bush. Probably while bent over his fathers desk looking through tear filled eyes at 8x10 glossy photographs of Ronald Reagan and John Wayne. But that's just a guess.

GravatarEd, don't be fucking dense.

Jeebus, why am I bothering here???

GravatarI seriously doubt there are more than a handful of active military who want a draft.

Why then did they just raise the enlistment age to 40?

Do you think they really believe that there are enough 37 year olds just dying to go to Iraq to bridge the manpower gap?

Or is this a message?

The credit card bill is coming around SE. When you mouthed off about "building democracy" in the Middle East, you should have realized how many boots on the ground it would take.

See you at the next anti-war rally when you switch sides. Remember, no Rachel Corrie jokes and no getting all upset when we burn flags. And make sure to bring your own soldier to spit on a call a baby killer.

GravatarNow, come on you guys.... yer making this entirely too difficult for ol' Special Ed there.

But, it certainly is fun to watch his aimless floundering.

GravatarSpecial Ed,

You are right. The Right does abhor the thought of a draft. Because The Right is afraid that their children will be drafted to fight this war of choice.

Unless they can find a way to ensure that only poor and minorities can be drafted, then there will be enthusiastic support for a draft.

GravatarTena & RMJ --

I am with you 100% on the Schiavo case -- it is an unbelievably sick situation (but the true believers on the right (both the politcal & the religious right) are mostly mentally ill (or at best at a very immature level of development)

Charles Rangle (hardly an extremely right-winger -- pretty left, actually) has called for a draft -- GWPDA (again, not exactly a fascist) has pointed out the national service is appropriate & right in a democratic republic

A draftee army is more reflective of the society as a whole -- having a draftee army in Nam got us out of there faster

So I would support National Serice, but it should apply to all (including women) & it should not be exclusively military (which should provide for pascifists like RMJ & myself)

Or so it seems to me

GravatarAgain, I will not support a draft.

I still believe the invasion of Iraq was the right thing to do. I still support our foreign policy.

I still support all of you to continue with criticism and fact-checking. You're vital to the continued greatness of our nation.

Oh, yess, the protesters. I still think they were deluded and wrong.

GravatarYou continue to *support* this debacle?

You fool.

Willful ignorance. Ignore the unpleasant FACTS. Sooner or later it will be impossible to ignore.

GravatarMoad-Dib - By the way, it is my German landlord that compares bush and his cabinet to Hilter and his henchmen.

I have a friend who grew up under the Third Reich. Her stepfather was an officer on the Eastern Front. Last summer she and I were talking and she leaned forward and lowered her voice and said: "This is just how it started, you know. We gave up little things to "be safe." It was just like this."

GravatarAgain, I will not support a draft.

The military says "unless we invade Iran, there will be another 9/11. But we need a draft to be able to invade succesfully".

Then do you support it?

Or was that war about WMDs all along and now that there were no WMDs it just wasn't necessary?

Credit card bill is coming.....

GravatarOh damn, I hardly ever post, but I enjoy reading the intelligent posters. I learn so much.

However, to the fucking trolls that call liberals cowards and get the fuck out?

My husband is a Vietnam vet, a Marine who went through that sweet little hell over there, his father was in WW2 and Korea and his grandfather was a Sgt. Major in the Marines and saw action in WW1 and WW2. Two of my stepsons served this country, one in the NG and one for 8 years in the Army.

But I'll tell you fuckwads (the trolls)..when it came to my last step-son joining the Marines this past year, my husband went ballistic. "Not for this goddammed shit, he won't!"

We are proud AMerican liberals, this family has served this country for generations. You can just plainly and simply shut the fuck up.

Excuse everyone else, I'm normally much more lady-like. Thank you.

Oh, and Tom Delay..to quote a gentleman from 50 odd years ago:

"At long last, sir, have you no shame?"

GravatarSpecial Ed,

"I seriously doubt there are more than a handful of active military who want a draft."

While this may be a true statement, I see and hear troops on their way out the door after they have served their commitment. There's no replacement s scheduled in and rumor has it MAJCOM is re-structuring manpower to meet the shortage. In fact, their recruitment goals are less that the Army's. They’re gonna do more with less. So how long do you think they can hold out before they can't perform at their mission level competence?

The idea of a draft is being floated to prepare the public for the enviable.

regards

.

GravatarI disagree with some of the opinions here. If that makes me a fool in your eyes, so be it.

GravatarAgain, I will not support a draft.

Good.

GravatarI disagree with some of the opinions here. If that makes me a fool in your eyes, so be it.

Why in your opinion did they just raise the enlistment age to 40?

GravatarBet you my bank account that you could find thousands of National Guardsmen who have had their deployments extended who would like to see some other people drafted to replace them.

We already have a draft, it's just not called that.
And there will be a draft. If Bush is insane enough to open up a third war it's absolutely certain.

GravatarCharles Rangel (hardly an extremely right-winger -- pretty left, actually) has called for a draft -- GWPDA (again, not exactly a fascist) has pointed out the national service is appropriate & right in a democratic republic

A draftee army is more reflective of the society as a whole -- having a draftee army in Nam got us out of there faster

So I would support National Service, but it should apply to all (including women) & it should not be exclusively military (which should provide for pascifists like RMJ & myself)

Or so it seems to me

As it's set up currently, the military draft (as opposed to the Health draft) is restricted to males. Only an Act of Congress can change that. And, oddly enough, the single surviving exemption covers both ministerial students and ministers (tho you kind of have to prove it. During the training, as folk were droning on about 'how do we make sure the individual really is a minister or other similarly acceptable religious, I kept nudging my seatmate and asking when Brother Clarence and Sister Mary Margaret in their complete uniforms would be showing up - however....) Similarly, those who are unable, due to conscience, to serve militarily as part of a military action may be designated Conscientious Objectors, and assigned to non-combatant roles, or, if utterly unable to accept even that form of military connexion, will be classified to serve two years in some other entirely non-military function.

And bigvic, do I want to be part of the folks making these decisions? No. That's why I am.

GravatarSWR, they need more bodies.

The trouble with numbers in the military is that the military has to maintain troops in too many places for non-military purposes. That's just my opinion.

John Tomato, what are you calling WMD?

GravatarI think a draft under these circumstances would be deeply immoral. This is not a war of necessity. People should not be forced to fight in it. The other side to it is that right now, young people are being forced to fight in the war out of need, because they are poor and didn't have other options. That's immoral too.

But then, that's the only outcome possible - immorality - because the war is immoral. I think the draft is wrong, but from a practical standpoint, more Americans need to understand the reality of this war. Americans haven't so far been asked to give up anything. Well, arguably, those who support the war have willingly given up their souls, but as a practical matter, no one in this country who doesn't have someone overseas has any connection to this war. That's immoral, too.

GravatarAnne, thank you for posting that!

Many of us have relatives that have served this country honorably.

This war was wrong from the start.

We're not obligated to support it or Bush.

Gravatar"If that makes me a fool in your eyes, so be it."

Ed, I'm the one who's tired of being played for a "fool" by Conservatives.

My "opinion" is that you are supporting selfish, violent and dangerous people, and that if you had a lick of sense you would STOP IT.

GravatarTena,

Funny how I hear the same whispers too.

In fact, every time Bush does a circus act for attention, I hear a lot about how similar the act is to what Hitler and the Nazi’s did in the 1930's.

The Germans have for years been victimized by the acts of Hitler and his henchmen so they are well aware of their transgressions. They are just stunned that what they have felt shamed for, for the last 60 to 70 years, they see as being practiced in the US today.

regards

.

GravatarThe trouble with numbers in the military is that the military has to maintain troops in too many places for non-military purposes.

Sounds like a letter I read in Time Magazine recently.

We shouldn't have invaded Iraq.

GravatarSWR, they need more bodies.

The insurgents in Iraq have already cut the roads from the Green Zone to the Airport. And this is with 150,000 American troops in the country.

Now I have no doubt that in a straight up fight the US military could beat the Iraqi resistent in any fight, anywhere. But the problem is that if those 150,000 Americans leave, any Iraqi government would fall in a couple of days.

So we're looking at a long term stalemate, one that will last from 5-10 years. Think about that. We're going to need 150,000 American troops in Iraq for the next 5-10 years and it's already taken a toll on recruitment.

So what does this mean? What happens in 2 or 3 years when they can't fill the gaps with stop loss orders anymore?

Gravatarspecial ed, you really need some special ed. george bushies adventures are about to break the army.
stop loss ain't the answer. moving the recruitment age up to 40 ain't it.

ain't no solution to this problem unless guys like you and jonah do the right thing and join up.

GravatarWho are the patriots?

I go to school with hundreds of young Republicans, many of the "America: love it or leave it" variety. Do you know how many of these are enlisting upon graduation this May?

One.

A FEMALE.

Gravatardan hoppe, I already did join up.

I am leaving now. Please keep the celebration small. Remember the last time Atrios had to clean up after us ...

GravatarLet me stipulate that if there is a draft I will actively lobby for people my age (quite old) who are fit be drafted if they have never served in the military or another service branch of the government, Vistas, Peace Corps, etc. Serving as a congressional or administration hack will not be a basis for exemption. It might even enhance the chances for selection. No exemptions for education, divinity school, having children, etc. No trick knees on football players either.

If there is a draft I am absolutely opposed to limiting it to the young.

GravatarSo we're looking at a long term stalemate, one that will last from 5-10 years. Think about that. We're going to need 150,000 American troops in Iraq for the next 5-10 years and it's already taken a toll on recruitment.

So what does this mean? What happens in 2 or 3 years when they can't fill the gaps with stop loss orders anymore?

Think about this, please. We've already been told that we're in Iraq for the long haul.

Think.

GravatarOh, yess, the protesters. I still think they were deluded and wrong.
Special Ed

The protesters were deluded & wrong??
And Bush was right???

Sorry but I don't drink this early in the day....

Gravatarain't no solution to this problem unless guys like you and jonah do the right thing and join up.

While it is time for Jonah to do his duty, Special Ed already did more than should be sufficient. Retired as a master sargeant, IIRC.

Gravatarspec ed,

any of those gems powell told us all about at the his u.n. dog & pony.

those same items that were the impetus for the invasion, those same items which the bush gang now says.."oops, there weren't none."

do try harder, your attempts at ignorance are as funny as your attempts at knowledge.

GravatarSo what does this mean? What happens in 2 or 3 years when they can't fill the gaps with stop loss orders anymore?
SWR

Oh, I'm sure all those late thirty-something balding, doughy armchair patriots with their radio dials permanently fixed to Rush Limbaugh will run to the nearest recruiter to enlist.

"Ask what you can do for your country" and all that stuff, ya know...

Wow!

And Anne that was a great post.

Gravatar"The trouble with numbers in the military is that the military has to maintain troops in too many places for non-military purposes."

They're trying to get away from that.

NPR had a newscast a couple days ago about a new air vehicle that is similiar to a cruise missle that can take off and land on its own.

The cruise missle will have the capability to fly to any part of the globe in a matter of hours and drop a payload that can loiter in a area for a considerable amount of time before being deployed.

Once the payload is delivered, the cruise missle returns to base and is preped for another mission.

The whole concept is to free the US military from having to establish bases overseas from which to launch strikes against potential enemies.

The first production models are due to roll off the assembly line in 2010.

Interesting times we live in where people are becoming obsolete.

I know a lot of balding, 30-something ex Greatful Dead fans who voted for Bush.

I know a lot of early 20-somethings who listen to Rush.

Right now conservatism is as trendy as leftism was in the 60s. The left became very un trendy when the post Vietnam recession hit and people realized they'd actually have to fight to stay in the middle class.

The right will become un trendy soon enough. But then again, we still have those 150,000 thousand troops in Iraq and the insurgents will still butcher any government in weeks without them.

In a way, our troops were just abit too good in Iraq, too competent. They're keeping a stalemate in place against the odds. They're keeping people in Iraq alive who will be either dead or on the first plane to London when they leave.

As soon as they leave, bang, civil war, chaos, a failed state, an Al Qaeda training camp to end all Al Qaeda training camps.

This is exactly what we "traitors" warned you against.

Gravatarhope that you are leaving to reup spec ed!! and get some of that extended bush clan to enlist!! i understand that not a one of the military age people in that clan are in the military! not one.
what is up with that?

GravatarHey Barndog, from Area Office 4, Local Board 6, (Maricopa County, AZ) Howdy!

GravatarThat's hilarious. I can't wait to see Goldberg's next excuse.

GravatarI forgot, we were talking about Jonah weren't we. It occoured to me that the reason he's in favor of killing cats might just be because his mother eats mice. Maybe him too. Old Lucy is getting up in years and can't catch them like she used to.

Gravatarpie,

"We've already been told that we're in Iraq for the long haul.'

The contract work I perform could easily be accomplished by active duty types. However, the military has decided to "outsource" this as a civilian contract. In fact, quite a bit of the non-military functions that once were performed by active duty types are now being done by civilian contractors.

There will come a time real soon where the lines between active duty and civilian contractor will blur and no one will be able to discern who is what and what is who.

In short, civilian contractors will free active duty to go and fight, but at the same time be sharing the same foxhole with each other. There may even be civilian commando contractors (once known as mercenaries) in the mix soon too. Rumsfield is quite a creative character.

Gravatar'night, M-D.

GravatarHah. Schwarzenegger said that he wouldn't tell Academy Award nominated actor and Academy Award winning director Warren Beatty how to act if Beatty wouldn't instruct him on politics. This after stating that he was not a politician.

GravatarI will pay $100 to anyone who comes up with an authentic photo of Lucianne Goldberg eating mice. No Photoshop allowed.

GravatarSchwarzenegger is nothing but a corporate shill. Nothing but.

GravatarIf it is suggested that Beinart enlist, I recommend the same for little Johnnie Chait. He acknowledges his support for the war. Let him bash Dean while he walks the parameter of the Green Zone.

GravatarJeez, it just occured to me. Chimpie's war is beginning to like Hitler's struggle near the fall of Berlin. Old men and little boys doing the fighting.

Gravatarjust for the record.... how many current or former allegheny county folks are here today

Currently living in Emsworth, J.T.
And have you seen the fine Pittsburgh blogs at http://www.pghbloggers.org/

Gravatar"Sir,a jelly donut, sir!"

"A jelly donut? Are you allowed to eat jelly donuts, Private Jonah?"

"Sir, no sir!"

"And why are you not allowed to eat jelly donuts, Private Jonah?"

"Sir, because I'm heavy sir!"

"Because you are a disgusting fatbelly, Private Pyle!"

Gravatarthis is milo's war. nobody should support it. it is being waged on behalf of the syndicate and contrary to the hype, nobody has a share.

GravatarIs there any way to get to DeLay's feeding tube and terminate his brain-dead ass?

GravatarSpeaking of war in Iraq (and the push for broadening military action to include Iran and maybe Syria), I ran across a new blog The Gorilla in the Room, which features content on the influence of the Israel Lobby on the issue.

Just so Google can link these names to my site (grin), two names you're going to be hearing a lot about in the next few weeks are Steve Rosen and Keith Weissman. Other keywords I'd like to link are Steven Rosen Spy Spying and AIPAC.

GravatarI served in the Nam unlike any of you, and I didn't come back bad mouthing the USA. I love the USA. YOu don't. Fuck you.

Toilet paper comes in all kinds of flavors.

Glad I didn't know that.

This may be my all-time favorite posting, ever. I just pray you don't get disappeared. Good luck.

GravatarBut, shit-suckers, what have any of y'all ever done for this country?

Atrios?

What?

That's what I thought.

GravatarHa-ha. Anti-Liberal Agitator claims:

"I'd be in Iraq if I was younger, but I served in the Nam unlike any of you, and I didn't come back bad mouthing the USA. I love the USA. YOu don't. F*** you."

First of all, Mr. Lying-Anti-Liberal Agitator, those who served in Vietnam served in 'Nam, not "the Nam."

Then he ducks out without stating when he served, how he served, with whom he served, or where he served. Was he drafted, or did he enlist voluntarily? Not one detail verifying his alleged service to his beloved country is offered.

I'd be more impressed even if he simply made something up in a lame attempt to pass himself off as patriotic, but he ducks out instead.

Real noble warrior, that Lying-Anti-Liberal Agitator.

Then he claims he'd be there if . . .

Ha-ha. But only if . . .

'IF' is the biggest word in the dictionary, Mr. Lying-Anti-Liberal Agitator soldier-man !!

Woulda . . . coulda . . . shoulda . . . kinda like Tom Delay, who would have served if all the minorities hadn't taken up the available enlistments . . .

Ha-ha.

Typical phony RightWingLemmingdompubbiehood poster. Nothing but bluster, then ducks and runs.

No wonder GeeDubya's such a hero to these people - not because he put his life on the line, but because he avoided service and got away with it.

Hey, Lying-Anti-Liberal Agitator soldier-man, why do you hate freedom?

GravatarDamn it! I'm 44! I'll have to pray that they raise the age to 45 before my next birthday.

GravatarThis is 'way late, but to correct someone upthread, I retired as a Staff Sergeant, not a Master Sergeant. I'm not a very good politician and got the right results the "wrong" way. Leadership style was too far out of the norm.

Whatever. The missions were always accomplished and my soldiers advanced quickly and did well, and that's what I was about.
