GravatarJeepers H. Christmas. The poor abused Christians use their kids as pawns in their sick schemes and then boo hoo hoo about cops arresting the little punks.

GravatarIf you are a judge in this country right now, what the hell can you be thinking (aside, of course, from "how can I keep myself and my family safe)?

GravatarUm,

This looks like a real threat. Anyone call the Florida police to have them be on the lookout for this guy?

They may not have read the blogs...

It would be a shame to read about Hal killing some people when we all saw it coming.

Gravatarjustaquestion ...

I think I read that the FBI is on this freak's trail. I think they're probably familiar with him.

GravatarAnd so it begins. The end of the Republic. Next stop: the Clown Wars.

GravatarPersonally, I'd consider it a huge step towards freedom for America if Hal showed up and got himself shot while interfering with the law. That goes for Randall Terry and the rest of the traitorous scum trying to reduce this country to a tinpot banana republic. They are too nasty to live in this country.

GravatarIn the thread below, Laura has a really good post on why the Miami Herald story may be part of a ruse to save his rep with the fundies.

GravatarThe Turner diaries revisited?

GravatarEven as the president was supporting his brother, Florida governor Jeb Bush, and congressional Republicans in "defending the culture of life" in the Schiavo case, doctors in Houston were pulling the breathing tube from the throat of an ailing infant.

By Chris Floyd

The boy suffocated within seconds, legally killed -- against the wishes of his anguished mother -- in accordance with a draconian law signed as a "cost-saving" measure by the state's former governor: George W. Bush. For more, click HERE: Body Double

GravatarIf this guy was named Ahali bin Tuneri, he'd be on a plane to Gitmo right about now.

GravatarRandall Terry has been rousing the rabble from sidelines. He's expecting all the yokels to do his dirty work for him, so he can profit from this circus. You know what'd be the real Cosmic Punchline to this circus? Randall Terry gets wasted in the crossfire and I ain't talkin' about the lame ass CNN program.

Fuck Bush and his li'l doggies too.

Have a nice day.

GravatarAmerican jihadist?

And anyone can play. A few miles from our home is a small community called Fairview where my daughter lives. The FBI and local law enforcement arrested a man there Friday night for putting a bounty on the heads of Michael Shiavo and Judge Greer

On Wednesday, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department in Florida forwarded an e-mail to the FBI in Tampa. In the e-mail, a $250,000 bounty was placed on the “head of Michael Schiavo.” The e-mail also placed a bounty of $50,000 on the judge who recently denied a request to intervene in the case of Terri Schiavo, a 41-year-old woman whose parents say is reaching her final hours after her feeding tube was removed at the request of her husband on March 18.

The e-mail also made reference to the recent death of a judge in Atlanta and the murder of a judge’s family members in Illinois, according to the news release. Oates declined to elaborate or explain the context of the references to the judges.

Let the games continue.

GravatarEvery day this charade plays out is another day for sane folks to take a good look at what the *Christian* fundies really represent. Jesus would be so proud to have his principals tossed into the shredder.

GravatarTurner's Rebellion?

Gravatarjeb is no floridian. he's the florida tentacle of the bfee. he's like some evil anthropomorphic display of all that is hideous and wrong about who these supposed "leaders" the bushes are, and where they really came from. He is simply one extremety of a fell beast that has festered in the bog of american politics, as though it were from a poorly rehearsed high school school play, for far too long.

GravatarMSNBC POLL: Who should decide Terri Schiavo's fate

GravatarOKAY - granted that these people are scary stupid - but let's take them as well intentioned and sincere for a moment...

How can we tie their desire to "save terri" - a wlllingness to travel, break laws - a desperation to avoid this fate

to the FACT that thousands of children in this country are hungry every night

to the FACT that millions don't have access to health care

surely if each of the people (not the extremist leaders like Hal - who are doing this for power and publicity, - but their well intentioned if blind and stupid followers would but about a tenth of the prayer, energy, and money they're throwing at a woman with liquid for brains - into underfunded ministries and govt programs that serve the poor - we could make a real difference.

I think rather than debating Terri with coworkers, neighbors - we progressives should arm ourselves with poverty and hunger statistics and confront anyone on the "save terri" side with things they can do that would REALLY make a "pro-life" difference for someone who really benefit.

GravatarBILLMON'S BACK!!

And on fire, thanks for the tip Hamburger.

GravatarJust Another Zero ... That is weird. I would have thought this guy was from south or central Jersey. He is right across the river from the city. Those communities tend to be pretty multi-culti.

GravatarOk, I'm no big law-talkin' guy, but isn't coming out and saying "I advocate the killing of..." tantamount of public incitement, especially when the person saying that has a freakin' radio program? That would seem to be the radio equivalent of yelling "fire" in the crowded theater.

GravatarRepublicans don't want our society to be a nation of laws. Period.

Too true. I've been saying for years that most of these so-called "conservatives" are really just right-wing anarchists.

GravatarMaybe the "important thing" he had to do was go to the bathroom. I know I've been there.

GravatarThis situation reminds me of the movie "Citizen Ruth."

GravatarYou know what'd be the real Cosmic Punchline to this circus? Randall Terry gets wasted in the crossfire and I ain't talkin' about the lame ass CNN program.

Fuck Bush and his li'l doggies too.

Hahahahaha. Then the near dead pope would cannonize his sorry ass for sainthood.

GravatarDave J. ....

The standard is (paraphrasing here) that he would have to be in a position to do it right then and there, i.e., if he were at the hospice, armed, and physically able to start shooting up the place, then you could arrest him just for saying, "I'm going to kill anyone who gets in my way (including the law enforcement)."

IN other words, if I'm on the steps of the NY PUblic Library and I'm a quadripalegic and I yell, "I'm going to go to D.C. and kill the president" I've done nothing wrong because a) I'm far from D.C. and the president; and b) I'm physically unable to carry out my threat.

GravatarHunter at dailykos had an excellent post yesterday summing up the media's complicity in these calls for violence:

Over the last three days or so, however, the coverage on the Little Three news networks -- Fox, CNN, MSNBC -- has ceased to be humorous. There is a difference between bad coverage and willfully irresponsible coverage, and another line between willfully irresponsible coverage and dangerously irresponsible coverage. In the last three days, those lines have been crossed. Repeatedly. And it has been absolutely, definitively intentional.

[snip--he then cites numerous examples]

We now have a situation in which two dangerous elements are coming together in a manner that is ratings gold for exploitative "news" outlets. Yellow journalism, finally returned in all glory.

1. Excite and incite viewers with tales that Ms. Schiavo, awake and alert, is being "murdered" within the walls of her hospice by a conspiracy between an abusive husband, bloodthirsty "expert" doctors, and every single state and federal judge to hear the evidence in the case.

2. Endorse the notion that it may now be time to take Ms. Schiavo by force.

Viewing Videotape, Frist Disputes Fla. Doctors' Diagnosis of Schiavo

By Charles Babington
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, March 19, 2005; Page A15

Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), a renowned heart surgeon before becoming Senate majority leader, went to the floor late Thursday night for the second time in 12 hours to argue that Florida doctors had erred in saying Terri Schiavo is in a "persistent vegetative state."

"I question it based on a review of the video footage which I spent an hour or so looking at last night in my office," he said in a lengthy speech in which he quoted medical texts and standards. "She certainly seems to respond to visual stimuli."

Today

"The suggestion by some that Senator Frist was making a 'diagnosis' in the Schiavo case is absurd," said his spokesman, Bob Stevenson. "Nowhere in his comments was he substituting his opinion for others. But with medical experts split on Terri Schiavo's condition and a woman's life at stake, he suggested the court solicit additional tests and attempt to reach a medical consensus on her condition."

GravatarThere's a lunatic fringe for every public issue. Why do we give a shit about what this pathetic little man has to say? Seems like obvious grandstanding to get attention.

GravatarTJ,
"Um, they don't care. They really truly do not give a shit."

Amen, sister/brother.

GravatarI think that rather than debating Terri with co-workers ...

These should be dem/lib/progressive "talking points" re Schiavo:

1) We support the rule of law.

2) Congress should not pass laws designed to assist individual U.S. citizens. This is contrary to our system of government.

3) We support our Federalist system as designed and implemented by the Framers i.e., we respect Florida's state sovereignty

4) If the citizens of FL feel that the evidentiary standard for judging whether Mrs. Schiavo had expressed her wish not to be kept alive is too low, they should pass legislation requiring a higher standard in future cases, e.g., family of someone in a PVS without a living will should have to demonstrate by a preponderance of the evidence that the person had expressed a wish not to be kept alive that way (as opposed to the "clear and convicing" standard currently in force).

GravatarFried brains news:

Health may be concern when giving kids cell phones

Wednesday, March 23, 2005 Posted: 11:14 AM EST (1614 GMT)

SEATTLE, Washington (AP) -- Parents should think twice before giving in to a middle-schooler's demands for a cell phone, some scientists say, because potential long-term health risks remain unclear.

Researchers have speculated for more than 10 years that the electromagnetic radiation emitted from cell phones may damage DNA and cause benign brain tumors, said Henry Lai, a bioengineering professor at the University of Washington.

"We don't know very much about the health effects of cell phone use on kids, but there are speculations," Lai said.

these people are "all talk and no trousers" (as my limey hubby likes to say) ...

... they may talk a good game about "somebody has to DO something" - but as we've all seen with W and Jebby and the rest of the clown circus, they'll raise their voices when the cameras are on them, then slink off at the first sign of opposition ...

... prime example - the mother who sent her kids off to get arrested ... what SANE mother would do that??? and why is the department of child protection services not stepping in? - if she felt so strongly, she should have stepped in herself ...

all talk ... no trousers ...

GravatarCiao, Moonbats. Dark as night here and raining and thundering.

GravatarKarin ... That's the legal standard from Brandenberg v. OH.

GravatarWow, for a "pro-life" guy, he sure does use the word "kill" alot. Oh, then there's this gem:

GravatarI never watch Fox news. But this recent insanity caused me to turn it on last night, just to gauge their "fair and balanced" coverage of this mess. Wow, what a bunch of fucking perverts. They so distorted the fucking story it was amazing! I sat, in stunned silence, while these bloviating brain-dead cretins pontificated about the saveable state of poor Terry. Breathtaking. Absolutely breathtakingly fucking amazing.

Gravatarmmmm...sultry (I love that "handle" btw)....

Really, unless Patriot Act has changed this, the current standard for speech advocating illegal action comes from a case called Brandenberg v. OH. There is a 2-part test a court will use to determine if gov't can prosecution a citizen for such action:
1) Express advocacy is directed toward producing or inciting IMMINENT lawless action AND
2) Advocacy is likely to produce or incite such action, i.e., defendant must possess the means/ability to effect the action advocated.

Gravatarmr. bill - IMHO, overly optimistic view -- the fundies are getting just what they want from this -- FANNING THE "US VERSUS THEM" MENTALITY.

Now that the whld thing has turned to shit, I wonder what the boy thinks?

Gravatarcongressmen are so concerned for terri they are staying away from being on tv.

Gravatarand yet CNN et al is giving the insane nuts a platform to incite that fraction.

Sure, because it draws more viewers, which means bigger ratings = more money. They could care less about fairness and accuracy. They're in a viewership battle with FNC and only care about the ratings numbers. Whatever it takes to get them.

“We take any threat of murder over the Internet seriously,” she said. “It doesn’t matter who they are threatening. We take it seriously.”

Gretchen Shappert, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, credited the success of the investigation to cooperation between federal and local law enforcement in North Carolina and Florida.

“Threats made in interstate commerce will not be ignored by federal law enforcement,” she said.

GravatarGiven the religiosity that grips these wingnuts, I must say that I'm not exactly thrilled that this is Easter weekend, the time celebrated by Christians as the time that Jesus sacrificed himself to save mankind from its sins. Many of the ultranuts really do identify themselves with Jesus, and if you visit the FreeRepublics of the world you can also see a lot of direct comparisons between Schiavo (Terry, not Michael) and Jesus. If there was ever a time when they'd be inclined to do something nutty (read: violent), it would be now. Very worrisome.

Excellent point -- regardless of what we say now, the media "echo-chamber" is going turn this to chimpy's advantage when he starts reappointing wacko judges. IMHO, we need a better handle on how chimpy, his enablers, and his band of thieves manipulate the sheeple if we are going to confront it.

Proclaimations that "boy they did it this time" and "what them implode" are not going to do it. Neither is trying to reason with the "kool-aiders." Somewhere in the middles, there must be some reasonable people.

GravatarOn another front, Herr George has emerged from the Bunker and finally says something about the shooting in Minnesota:

"President Bush on Saturday praised Minnesota high school security guard Derrick Brun for saving countless students by bravely confronting the teenage gunman who shot and killed him.

"Derrick's bravery cost him his life, and all Americans honor him," Bush said in his first public comments about Monday's shootings on Minnesota's Red Lake Indian reservation.

. . .

"Although he was unarmed, Derrick ignored the pleas of a colleague to run for his life," Bush said in his weekly radio address. "By engaging the assailant, he bought vital time for a fellow security guard to rush a group of students to safety."

. . .

Bush said he and the first lady are praying for the victims and that the federal government is helping the community. He said the FBI and Department of Justice are coordinating with other authorities to provide counseling, help with funeral arrangements and offer other assistance.

"As we help the families in this community, we must do everything in our power to prevent tragedies like this from happening," Bush said. "Children benefit from a sense of community, and the support and involvement of caring adults.

(here's the money quote):
"To keep our children safe and protected, we must continue to foster a culture that affirms life and provides love, and helps our young people build character."

Like the geek show in Florida, George?

Waste of air, this guy.

GravatarExcept, mr. bill, that US is shrinking and THEM is growing.

Point well taken, tena, I am not trying to say you are wrong. Its just that this type of discourse was not meant to "public consumption." They don't care about the polls nor do they actually seem to care about votes anymore.

GravatarJustice by gut feeling and devine inspiration:

Keith Olberman has a post up that indicates that there are some 300,000 people in the US that are diagnosed as in a persitent vegetative state.

Assuming that 10% of those cases may have someone advocating to excercise the wishes of the patient not to be kept alive by artificial means and in an undignified existence then there would be a minimum of 3,000 people that would have to be murdered according to those advocating killing as a remedy to assisting "God's will" and the right to life. Assuming that there would be a judge or two, attorneys and law enforcement as well as medical personel and innocent bystanders around that would also have to be taken out (assuming 3-4 addiional murders and/or collaterally damaged individuals per case) then there could be as many as 12,000 people who would have to suffer the ultimate Hal Turner (lunatic religous zealot)punishment. On a bright note, maybe some would only be wounded and would learn the error of their ways.

If 50% of the cases involved a right to die decision then the numbers are even more staggering. At some point hundreds of thousands or millions would have to be killed to protect the right to life.

Of course it would take as many killers. Perhaps the Bushes and the Republicans could create a more efficient state system thereby saving the citizen's precious concern and tax dollars on trials.

GravatarLet Jeb and his henchmen take Teri Schiavo and put her under their care. As a condition, all the blowhards that demanded that like G. Bush, Delay, Limpballs, etc. care for her, and broadcast their visits live on TV and radio. In fact, start up a cable channel that features Terri 24/7, presenting her every random motion and meaningless bleat to her adoring public. Then after several months, or years, of useless treatment, maybe, and I mean maybe, some of the fanatics that insisted on this may come to realize they were wrong. Most of them won't though, as they're as brain dead as she is.

GravatarAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA WAAAAAAAAAAAA

Freely translated from the Latin, this means:

"I just wanna crawl in a hole and die, but the Bush boy's and their whacko religious snake-handler
(athletic) supporters would rather use and abuse me for their seeming politial gain.
Oh, but they didn't really count on me coming back to haunt them, now, did they. Look at the polls, W."

Where's Dub Taylor? Smiley Burnett? Al St. John? Max Terhune? Fuzzy Knight? Emmett Lynn?

Gravatarlinky is broken mena.

GravatarBugman is so deeply tainted with Original (and acquired) sin that he needs a second person to die for him. Perhaps the passion of Jesus was insufficient because God was not paying attention and did not anticipate the likes of the Bugman. In the Bugman's own words:

"She is still one of us and this cannot stand. Terri Schiavo has survived her passion weekend and she has not been forsaken."

GravatarDamn. I'm trying again.

GravatarCatholics can be cremated.

GravatarMaybe, for the sake of argument, 10% of 300,000 should be 30,000. And, if we make that assumption then 12,000 = 120,000.

I blame my bad math on Bush.

Gravatarmr. bill - I understand what you are saying and perhaps it wasn't meant for public consumption. However, allow me to doubt that seriously. Tom Delay and Jeb Bush and Bill Frist could have confined their bullshit to that target audience, but they didn't. And that's because everything is about public consumption with these people because everything is about power.

Jeb gambled here that the public would rush to the side of the Schindlers. It hasn't and I think that has rocked Jeb and rest. They are trying to back off this volatile situation and are having trouble doing that. For one thing, the Schindlers aren't letting Jeb just lock his door and ignore them - they're publicly denouncing his inaction.

GravatarNew headline:

"Republicans revolting in Terri Sciavo case"

We report, you decide.

Gravatar"Republicans revolting in Terri Sciavo case"

I think the link works now.

GravatarRepublicans are revolting in all cases.

GravatarCatholics can be cremated.
mer

Yes, I seem to remember hearing that.

GravatarThat is just too cute mena, thanks for the tip.

Gravatar"She is still one of us and this cannot stand. Terri Schiavo has survived her passion weekend and she has not been forsaken."

That's pretty much the title of the rock opera I'm working on about the Schiavo case:

The Passion of the Kooks

GravatarTena ... Aren't you a lawyer?

GravatarCatholics can be cremated.
-mer

Yes. But what was reported on CNNI was that the Catholic parents objected to cremation, cited their religious beliefs, so even when Terri is no more the battle may continue.

GravatarStaples is having a sale on living will forms...50 for $19.99, but they are currently sold out and backordered until 2015!

GravatarThersites - have you cast Terri yet? I'm thinking either Bjork or Ann-Margret.

GravatarArchangel ...

Just go to your state's bar association web site. They probably have one you can download for free there.

GravatarRes Ipsa - Tena ... Aren't you a lawyer?

Yes, albeit a non-practicing one now.

GravatarThe Passion of the Kooks

For some reason when I first saw this I read it as "The Passion of the Kodos".

I wondered if Kang might be jealous.

Gravatar I wonder what Tom DeLay is doing right now.

With apologies to Rodgers and Hammerstein, "he's looking high and low for someplace to hide."

GravatarFrom Catholicism.about.com:

...in 1963, the Vatican lifted the ban on cremation for Catholics. The Catholic Church decided to allow cremation in certain circumstances provided the reasons for choosing it did not counter Christian belief. There were no allowances for any prayer or rituals to be used with the cremated body. So, funeral services needed to happen with the body present and then cremated.

Another change took place on March 21, 1997. The Vatican granted permission for the cremated remains of a body to be brought into church for the liturgical rites of burial.

The Catholic Church still prefers to have the funeral rites take place with the body present and then have cremation afterwards.

We now continue with this regularly scheduled blog.

GravatarLOVE the site mena!

Brilliant!!

GravatarYes, albeit a non-practicing one now.

(Sounds like every lawyer I know.)

Question ... See my post re Brandenberg v. OH above regarding standard for express advocacy of illegal conduct. I think I am right on the rules, but a) are you aware of any Patriot Act stuff that affects the Brandenberg standard; and b) if the threat is over the internet and thus considered "in interstate commerce" is there a different standard?

GravatarMorning, fellow Moonbats.

I don't know if Hal Turner will actually do anything, but with all the incitement flying over the airwaves and through the cable, it only takes one or two really sick nutcases to do something tragic -- and you can find one or two really sick nutcases on almost any issue. I'm worried.

GravatarIf you are a judge in this country right now, what the hell can you be thinking (aside, of course, from "how can I keep myself and my family safe)?

"How can I keep the Constitution of the United States of America safe?"

Gravatarand you can find one or two really sick nutcases on almost any issue. I'm worried.
==

Isn't that the truth, Toonscribe. And it's often the same sick nutcase.

GravatarThe superstar radio announcer actually posted on the General.

GravatarTena-

Great post yesterday.

GravatarSweet baby Jeepers. A spokesman for M. Shiavo said the latest court filing made the claim that there was a medical expert who could, I SHIT YOU NOT, hook a box up to Mrs. Shiavo's head and broadcast her *thoughts.*

OMG. Then they interviewed a couple who claimed Terri is talking less frequently as she slips away. Bloody farking hell. They report this shit like it is to be taken seriously. Stunning.

GravatarYou know, even the guy who is running the Lord of the Peeps website is shilling for the Save Terri crowd. Yech.

Gravatarhave you cast Terri yet? I'm thinking either Bjork or Ann-Margret.

We are being daring and going with Dee Snider. In a dramatic sequence in Act II, TV psychic John Edward (played by Rob Schnieder) will call up Terri's spirit, and Dee will leap from the bed and do a rousing version of "We're Not Gonna Take It."

GravatarDid you catch the latest document dump?

GravatarFluffy Halifax - Really? Bummer. Sorry I brought it up.

GravatarRes Ipsa - As far as I'm concerned, you've analyzed the threat situation correctly. I know of nothing that has overruled or superseded Brandenburg, myself.

You're actually in a better position than I am to determine whether you're right - you're totally up to date. I'm not particularly up to date anymore on the state of the law.

What you've said sounds reasonable to me.

Check with attaturk, Hecate or Snow - all lawyers - if you are still looking for answers when you see them around.

Gravatar" the Democratic Party are blood thirsty demons
If it's death they want. . . . ."

hmmm....I'd keep my eyes on this one...

GravatarMore Repug voters have been disgusted by this spectacle than not. The Repugs are down to the bare crazy bones of their religious right base.
Tena

You're right, Tena, as far as thisone issue is concerned. The difficulty is that as soon as this circus has petered out, those same Repug voters will go back to saying Dubya is a "good Christian man" and voting for what they mistakenly think will benefit their pocketbooks. I have seen this phenomenon over and over again: they seem to be unable to connect Republican behavior in this kind of episode from Republican behavior generally, and certainly will give any participating Bush a pass. Many of them still think that theirs is the party of Lincoln or, maybe, Eisenhower, at worst. Some will wake up by themselves, but we will have to set the alarm clocks for the rest of them if we want to get the Thuggees out of power. (My belwether for this compartmentalized behavior on the part of Republican voters is my Georgia in-laws, who fit the pattern exactly and never disappoint me by paying attention to evidence, data, or even their own professed religious beliefs.)

Gravatarbigvic,

"They report this shit like it is to be taken seriously. Stunning."

Who? CNN?

GravatarCNN Headline: 2 U.S. soldiers, 1 Marine killed in Iraq

What? Is a marine different from a soldier? Pretty sure this is THREE soldiers.

My god, who writes this stuff?

link in homepage

GravatarTena ...

Thanks.

I had Con II last spring and at that point Brandenberg was still good law. But this "threat in interstate commerce" is something we didn't cover. Based on what I learned, though, it STILL wouldn't matter unless the guy could carry out his threat. Patriot Act is its own can of worms. But if Brandenberg has been overruled and/or refined the cops had better get over to midtown Manhattan b/c there is a guy there who stands on the median of Park Avenue every damn day screaming that he is going to murder the entire U.S. congress.

GravatarSweet baby Jeepers. A spokesman for M. Shiavo said the latest court filing made the claim that there was a medical expert who could, I SHIT YOU NOT, hook a box up to Mrs. Shiavo's head and broadcast her *thoughts.*

Just ignore the assistant with the wireless microphone hiding in the linen closet.

GravatarElaine--in the original studies re cell phones and brain cancer, 92 percent of the data was eliminated to support that conclusion. I'm really suspicious of this one as well.

Gravatareric -

Well, the Marines really fall under the Navy. They have never been called soldiers, it's really correct to distinguish between the two.

GravatarFor one thing, the Schindlers aren't letting Jeb just lock his door and ignore them - they're publicly denouncing his inaction.

Something about when one dances with the Devil? That part is schweet. Real schweet.

The manipulating Bush bastards getting a little of their just desserts.

GravatarHolden - thanks. I actually got a 5 star rating - which surprised me.

Like I told you in comments at the home place the other day - I appreciate how closely you are following the government's attempt to plow under the facts about the prisoners tortured to death.

GravatarIf there was ever a time when they'd be inclined to do something nutty (read: violent), it would be now. Very worrisome.
Dave J.

Dave, Good Friday through Easter has historically been a time for Jew-killing, also. Many famous Eastern European pogroms happened at this time. My synagogue received a package with white powder and a threatening note yesterday afternoon. The kind of violent emotion engendered by the Schiavo hoohah can, and probably will, escalate and spread into other areas, as well.

GravatarTena ...

P.S. .. attaturk is a lawyer, too?. Damn. This place is crawling with them.

GravatarHey, Tena - non-practicing lawyers of the world unite!

I'm one, too ... although I prefer the term "recovering lawyer." It's a 12-step program, you never fully recover, the first step is admitting you have a problem ...

GravatarA Marine is a Marine. Ain't no sailor, either.

Try calling one a soldier or a sailor and then DUCK and RUN.

GravatarOT, but Paul Henning, creator of "The Beverly Hillbillies" , "Green Acres", etc. has died at 93. It says that later in life, he and his wife donated land near Branson, Mo, to be used for a conservation area. RIP, Paul, and thanks for the laffs.

GravatarThersites - have you cast Terri yet? I'm thinking either Bjork or Ann-Margret.

GravatarHasn't the continued filing of motions by the Schindler's passed into the realm of frivolous lawsuits? They are now reduced to petitioning the same courts which have ruled previously on their same requests and turned them down. Why don't the courts just refuse to accept them or demand that the Schindler's pay the state's cost for even bothering to look at these petitions. Dubya and the Republicans rail about meaningless lawsuits and yet nwillingly accept gaming the system when it suits their political purposes. This aspect of the issue needs to be hammered home in the next election cycle and this case just spotlights the issue.

GravatarDid you catch the latest document dump?

Not to mention the latest lid clamped down on the memory hole.

2 Army soldiers...1 US Marine...as different as night and day.

GravatarHey now Elaine - I resemble that remark.

GravatarPrahaPartizan: the only thing I can think of is that they keep producing new "evidence" of Terri's viability or sentient thought or something. They wouldn't get a hearing if they just rehashed the same old stuff.

Whatever it is, it's probably too nuanced for the media to cover. Then again, 1,500 dead soldiers are too nuanced, too, I guess. Unless they die spectacularly ...

Gravatarholy grilled cheese sammich!

i'd bet money that they are watching OUR antics, so it is safe to say that "they" know all about good ole Hal. Another lone nut (developing...)

Gravatar2 Army soldiers...1 US Marine...as different as night and day.

Not anymore, unfortunately. They all have something in common.

GravatarAs the brownshirts scurry around looking for a place to hide like cockroaches when the light comes in, shouldn't we start a "It's All the Liberals' Fault!" watch? Via TBogg, here's the latest:

What I don't understand is why this tragic case should be an occasion for the partisan hatred which currently bedevils our public life:

I don't know how to account for it, unless one concludes that for some liberals, politics is about hate, period.

Up next: blame it on the Clenis™!

GravatarSorry, 1,500 dead military personnel. Didn't mean to state they were all soldiers.

Let's see ... I was a high school and community college teacher before going to law school. So, I've got a solid three out of four.

I'm not a psychiatrist. (As if you had to ask.)

GravatarSoprano - WRT: Repug voters and whether they will remember this:

Here's the thing, as I see it, which automatically means take this however you want. There are some who will always vote for Bush because they just will. But there are those who voted for him for reasons that have nothing really to do with Bush's extremism. These are traditional conservatives who, I believe, voted for Bush as the lesser of two evils. If they haven't figured out by now that they fucked up, because Bush is most definitely not the lesser of two evils, then you and mr. bill and others are right.

I, however, feel that enough people on the right, including our local wingnut radio screamer, Mark Davis, still believe in Federalism and governmental non-intervention in this kind of situation, that it may well cancel out the nut faction. I don't know that, but I do know that the Terri Shiavo Circus Sideshow has blown back on the Repugs and caused serious damage to the party. I do think that it will make a long term difference.

GravatarHasn't the continued filing of motions by the Schindler's passed into the realm of frivolous lawsuits? They are now reduced to petitioning the same courts which have ruled previously on their same requests and turned them down.

Yes. It also makes one think about some of the ranting on the right about all of the wasteful appeals that someone gets from death row.

It just goes to show, it isn't that they don't like the appeals, it's that they just don't like other people's appeals.

GravatarThe tradition of weekend dumping of dangerous information or better, dumping information or passing very unpopular laws when everyone is utterly distracted....is a fucking conspiracy that the news media participates in.

They hold off on covering stories, even the burning oil refinery story they sat on for hours!---they cooperate with the dumping and covering because they are all fascists who want tax cuts and favors.

Gravatardoes anyone else think this is all going to turn out like the end of a Shirley Jackson novel?

Gravataraccording to cnn the 'ahhhhh and waaaaa' from terri witnessed by her parents' lawyer isn't enough to indicate that she's changed her mind about wanting to die.

GravatarI said last night & I'll say it again; Ol' Hal is gonna be recieving a couple nattily-dressed Federal visitors one day--or minute--Real Soon Now. If he said this shit on the air, he'll have definitely drawn the attention of the FBI. You can say a lot of batshit crazy stuff, and these "people" sure do, but this crosses that thin blue line in a way that's just not safe.
Idiot.

GravatarSlogan for the right after terri dies - ape has killed ape

GravatarThersites -- Have you thought of casting a cabbage as Terri?

GravatarYes. It also makes one think about some of the ranting on the right about all of the wasteful appeals that someone gets from death row.
==

You're right. And isn't that a microcosm of the whole "bloated gov, cut-the-fat,welfare queens in cadillacs, not with MY money" mentality? They've got nothing against "handouts" at all. Just for "those Others".

GravatarTurner's behind in his Household Fiance paments and trying desparately to raise money.

And here, this odious pipsqueak with bad teeth and dirty fingernails, is treated like Public Enemy #1 and gets the pervasive pub and donations that go with it.

Arios is, like White House Bush, misusing the front page.

GravatarIf you're a judge in this country right now...teachers too. A food fight got nuts last week and a girl threw punch that knocked asst. principal to floor.

GravatarCNN sez: Judge has denied ruling.

I just heard that the parents said "No more appeals" after this one. So I guess that means that if the excrement is going to hit the whirling blades it will do so toute suite.

GravatarATRIOS, that is.

Gravatarall this brings back a scenario from when my grandmother was dying a few years ago. She was in terrible shape--diabetes and overweight had done their work, she had been bedridden and senile for the last couple of years, cared for by my aunts & mom on rotation. Finally she reached a point where she had to be hospitalized. My aunts & mom made the decision: keep her comfortable, but no extraordinary measures, and don't rescuscitate if her heart or breathing fail. At this point her existence was just misery: she was blind, feeble, bedridden, incontinent, and when she WAS aware the senile dementia was so complete that she was in utter terror--didn't recognize the people around her, couldn't comprehend what was happening or where she was.

Fine, except my ONE aunt went batshit. At any cost, at any measure, this life had to be "saved". She pretty much accused all her sisters of "wanting their mother dead," of murdering her. My mom just couldn't fathom it--given the misery and suffering of what Nan was going through, why would anyone want to prolong it? It was crazy at the time--of course, my main memory of it was how it upset my mother and added unecessarily to her pain. Wingnut Auntie was fortunately outnumbered and out-voted, and my Nan lasted a few more weeks and passed, mercifully. But I've thought about it a lot, at the time and now recently. There was just something inherently emotionally WRONG with the terror and hysteria my aunt evinced at facing her mother's death. We are talking about a woman in her 70's, dealing with the loss of her mother in her 90;s--plenty of time to come to terms with an inevitable loss in every life. I thought there must be some guilt or pain or unresolved issue driving that extreme reaction.

Maybe too it matters that the rest of my aunts are sort of ordinary, normal Catholics--only aunt Mary had become wacky-fanatic about it--wearing "precious feet" pins, all that sort of thing.

What it comes down to is that I think there's just something terribly wrong with the Schindlers and their refusal to face the obvious and inevitable, and the way they've made this damaged hull of their daughter the center of their world, and now, of this shameful spectacle. Maybe retro-guilt about that eating disorder that put her there in the first place...who knows.
But it's sick. and sad.

GravatarAnd for those who keep asking about abuse of process - hell yes, the Schindlers are abusing process. They are getting a pass on it because they are arguing that this is a matter of life and death. It's not - it was a matter of life and death 15 years ago. Now it's a matter of goddamned fucking science fiction.

The Schindlers should be fined for what they are doing. They won't be, but that's alright. It is unbelievably hypocritical because like y'all are saying - the right is who is always screaming about too many court cases, too many frivolous lawsuits, too many lawyers, too many activist judges.

Of course, the right has its own definitions for those things and all the definitions boil down to "if you agree with me, you're doing right; if you disagree with me, you are an evil person and wrong." My deepest hope right now is that more Americans than the ones who hang out here are seeing this for what it is. And I think they are.

GravatarSinfonian, make me another recovering lawyer. And I've used that phrase, too.

Gravatardoes anyone else think this is all going to turn out like the end of a Shirley Jackson novel?

I'm getting Michael O'Donoghue vibes myself. A shame that Hunter S. Thompson isn't here to report on this.

GravatarI remember once about a made-for-tv movie about american extremists, nazi militia types who were harassing a jewish family.
In the end the culprit(s) are caught but as the movie is about to end, and the scumbags are being hauled away by the police, one of the perps makes an eerie boast saying this wasn't over. That they were everywhere.
Obviously the guy was implying that with the ability of nazis to act and behave like normal people until around like-minded others with whom they need not hide their true intentions, they can easily appear like normal people, gain the acceptance of normal people who might otherwise never support them, and eventually gain access to the halls of power in this country.

Dave Neiwert discusses this often. How these kinds of people are learning not to express their opinions openly. To hide them and implement them in secret.
But creeps like Turner must either be rogues or have so much money and connections that they feal that events like 9/11 have opened the door for them to no longer have to hide their true evil faces.

Turner is one of those creeps who should be hounded across the spectrum at every tv or media appearance. Not enough people watching know who this guy is. All he has to do is appear like a nice christian fellow and everyone's feebleminded christian neighbor will be bringing him angelfood cakes and intriducing their daughters to him.

MYOB'
.

GravatarOf course, the right has its own definitions for those things ...

I believe that's what Oscar refers to as torturous inconsistency.

GravatarSchindler's have become addicted to having their grief appeased by publicity. After Terri no longer affords them that opportunity they will be in a desperation for attention...

GravatarWelcome to the club, Nora. I stole that phrase ("recovering lawyer") from a development officer (my current career, lo these nine years or so) at Emory Law School.

It's a classic, and oh so apropos.

GravatarOh Lord ... I bet Faux is readying it's "Easter Vigil" graphics now. Hannity will be absolutely insufferable on there tonight. Maybe he'll get hit in the head by a giant crucifix.

GravatarThe tradition of weekend dumping of dangerous information or better, dumping information or passing very unpopular laws when everyone is utterly distracted....is a fucking conspiracy that the news media participates in.

For example, the Pentegon refuses to prosecute 17 soldiers implicated in the deaths of at LEAST 28 prisoners who died of torture at their hands. Front page NYT story and not a peep (ha)from the TV news, where idiots go for their daily dose.

GravatarSinfonian -
I'm one, too ... although I prefer the term "recovering lawyer." It's a 12-step program, you never fully recover, the first step is admitting you have a problem ...

I admitted that the day I went to register for my first semester of law school. I took one look at all the guys walking around in lawyer outfits (people with clerking jobs, mostly) and said: "What in the hell am I doing here?"

I'm still grateful for the education. It was worth every penny - I finally understood that I couldn't continue to coast on my intuition about things - I was going to have to back it up with real thought.

GravatarLast Fall, ABC Radio signed a deal with Sean Hannity: 5 years/$25 million.
Last week, Hannity hurt our country by airing vicious lies about the Schiavo case.

Phil Boyce is the head of ABC Radio & I encourage you to send
him an e-mail Monday strongly complaining about Hannity:
phil.boyce@abc.com
Here’s the letter I wrote:
Dear Mr. Boyce,

I realize that Hannity is nothing more than a radio whore for President Fredo
but in the last week he has gone out of his way to hurt America with his
deliberate lies about the Terri Schiavo case.

I expect you to demand that he clean up his act and deliver an on-air apology
or I will approach the FCC about this matter.

Sincerely yours,

GravatarRes.. sorry seems I was wrong.
ok?

GravatarHave you thought of casting a cabbage as Terri?

No, but the part of Denny Hastert will be played by a 300-pound mutant cabbage, kindly provided by the Monsanto corporation.

GravatarLoco Lobo ..

No problemo, amigo.

GravatarOTOH, CNN assures us that darts is indeed a sport. Thank GAWD for that!

GravatarI'm still grateful for the education. It was worth every penny.

Tena ... I agree (and I haven't even graduate yet). I feel as though law school has made me a better citizen.

But I don't want to be a lawyer, either.

GravatarNow that the judicial part is over, 100% of the attention will be on Jebbie.

Enjoy, asshole.

GravatarJp, about death: in many families, there is some person, usually religious, who won't let go. It is very puzzling since these same people are the ones convinced god wants them specifically.

Or maybe realists...they know they are doomed in so many nasty ways!

GravatarThersites -- I thought Hastert was to be played by a 300 lb sack of chicken guts provided by the Tyson Corporation.

GravatarBTW, here's another good one from that Turner site:

(The Pinellas Park Police) deserve to have the shit kicked out of them, and that Hospice ought to be blown up by a truck bomb.

Of course, IOKIYAR!

Gravatarthe part of Denny Hastert will be played by a 300-pound mutant cabbage, kindly provided by the Monsanto corporation.

And after the shoot, you can feed your crew with the cabbage!

GravatarAny of our Jewish friends know if an omelet with cream cheese is kosher? If not, then there ya go, Kent.

Toonscribe,
Sorry--cream cheese in an omelet is okay from the kosher perspective, as long as you don't serve any meat on the side. (Sounds delicious, too.)

GravatarWe even have ministers here at Atrio's basement playhouse!

And one ox team driver (me).

GravatarHanging from a rotten apple tree is too good a demise for the person who invented god. We seem to be returning to the Middle Ages.

GravatarDitto on the valuable (if expensive) education, Tena and Res. It actually serves me very well in the advancement (development/alumni relations) field.

My advice for those considering law school - find a good state school, and don't take out thousands of dollars in loans for a private-school(albeit high-quality) law degree. I know whereof I speak.

GravatarThersites -- I thought Hastert was to be played by a 300 lb sack of chicken guts provided by the Tyson Corporation.
Toonscribe

Right. Except not chicken guts.

GravatarNTodd, I'm afraid Krauthammer has cornered the cabbage roles.

GravatarStating the obvious, of course:

If Ms. Schiavo is as loquacious as her biological family adamantly claims, why don't they have a video camera trained on her constantly, so as to capture these fervently expressed wishes of hers? Of at least an audio recorder. If that isn't allowed, why haven't they tried to sneak one in?

GravatarFor "the Passion of the Kooks", I was going to suggest some nice organic cowshit from one of our local farmers to play the giant, steaming pile that is w, until I realized that wouldn't be appropriate at all. It should be corporate, outsourced, and laced with mucho mad-cow.

GravatarThe "Blame It On the Dems!" Watch continues! He-e-e-e-ere's Bobo!

If you surveyed the avalanche of TV and print commentary that descended upon us this week, you found social conservatives would start the discussion with a moral argument about the sanctity of life, and then social liberals would immediately start talking about jurisdictions, legalisms, politics and procedures. They were more comfortable talking about at what level the decision should be taken than what the decision should be.

GravatarIsn't it mixing meat and dairy at one meal that's not kosher?

GravatarAnd after the shoot, you can feed your crew with the cabbage!
NTodd, Mooned by Bats

They can all go on that fad diet...

GravatarMr. Wheeew: I think they do. The thing is, they film constantly and edit to preserve only those clips that appear to show a modicum of sentient thought.

It's kind of the same technique used by the Bush/Cheney campaign to create their campaign commercials.

GravatarMr. Wheeew--I believe there's an injunction against photographing Mrs. Schiavo at this point. Might explain why all we get is old, not convincing videotape.

GravatarMy reactionary reaction to this affair at this point is that despite the trees up ahead, this forest does, in fact, look like a win/win for the Republicans.
History has borne out again and again that the majority in this country has an extremely short attention span and often rewrites history based on a lingering emotion.
If Terri had been saved it would have been an obvious win, but what about a loss at the hands of 'activist judges'?
Sure, you and I know that this went through real court proceedings and that _evidence_ and _facts_ helped inform the decision of all of the hearings, but those people with their misspelled signs and pictures of Mary are in denial. 6 months from now, all they will remember is that our secular courts (that won't even allow the 10 commandments on their doorsteps) killed an innocent woman. These same courts sentence to death little unborn babies.
There's a sick little part of me that hopes that this festering religious war gets started sooner than later because these people try to tear down everything I work towards on a daily basis and if we're going to find ourselves in the dark ages again, I’d like to stop going to work now and start reading up for my apothecary exam.

GravatarBTW, here's another good one from that Turner site:

Of course, IOKIYAR!

Here's what I don't get

How can you advocate killing people in order to "rescue" what essentially is a dead body?

Oh right...
Crazy.

GravatarHey all-

OT I got a couple neww posts on my blog this morning, and some other recent ones that I think are ok.

See yas later

~Swan

Gravatarin many families, there is some person, usually religious, who won't let go.

When you tell a dying person that it's okay to go, that you'll be okay without them, they will let go.

GravatarI thought Hastert was to be played by a 300 lb sack of chicken guts provided by the Tyson Corporation.

Oooh, even better. Perhaps the mutant cabbage can be used to symbolocally represent CNN management.

GravatarSinfonia - Well, that always depends on what someone's goal is. Mr. Tena knew what he wanted to do with his law degree and he's doing it. Different schools have different emphases, so I think a person needs to assess what the goal is and what school will best help them reach it.

Gravatarjp, thank you, and you are precisely right about how much this comes down to a denial of death cult. It's been said before, but the irony that these supposedly religious folks who should be glad to go meet their maker, for whom life is only the prelude to the afterlife, are so wrapped up in life-at-any-cost is mind boggling (except that it is so obviously the case that I suppose it isn't any more).

Comment Part II: For all of you (non)lawyers out there, why isn't what Hal Turner is putting up there incitement to violence? Or, even, terrorism?

GravatarMr. Wheeew--I believe there's an injunction against photographing Mrs. Schiavo at this point.

I figured as much. They could still try to sneak a voice recorder in, though. If her family is willing to do anything to preserve her "life," one would think the risk of a night or two in the can for violating the injunction would be the least her family could do. Seeing as how the Pinellas jail is chock-full of their fellow fundies, it wouldn't even be that bad of a night.

GravatarSoprano -- Thanks for the kosher dietary info. Then -- cream cheese omelets for everybody!

Thersites -- I still like a cabbage for Terri, but I'm thinking a recorded vocal track featuring Roger Daltry. I keep hearing the agitated "WAAAAAAH" like The Scream in "Won't Get Fooled Again."

GravatarMr. Wheeew - Stating the obvious, of course:

If Ms. Schiavo is as loquacious as her biological family adamantly claims, why don't they have a video camera trained on her constantly, so as to capture these fervently expressed wishes of hers? Of at least an audio recorder. If that isn't allowed, why haven't they tried to sneak one in?

Well, even more obvious to me is that if Terri is capable of talking and all of the rest, as the insane clowns are claiming, then what the fuck is the big deal about removing the artificial eating apparatus? If she can eat, and that claim continues to circulate, then what the fuck is all the commotion about?

GravatarPerhaps the mutant cabbage can be used to symbolocally represent CNN management

What da ya mean, "symbolically?"

GravatarNTodd, I'm afraid Krauthammer has cornered the cabbage roles.
Elaine Supkis

So that's what a Skunk Cabbage looks like...

GravatarRes-
Regarding letting go, that was a wonderful comment perfectly consistent with my own experience. Thanks.

GravatarTena - agreed. I was just bitter about my loans for a moment there, since the impetus for going to (an expensive) law school (now almost 15 years ago) came from my first wife's family. Long story.

I never wanted to be a practicing lawyer even in law school, and I ended up practicing for a couple of years only because there wasn't much else for me to do at the time (1994). Anyway, didn't mean to hijack the thread (unless someone can come up with a connection, like Terri Schiavo's AAAHHHHH WAAAAAHHH really was "I want to go to law school").

Gravatar"When you tell a dying person that it's okay to go, that you'll be okay without them, they will let go."
Res Ipsa Loquitor

Very true. Happened in my best friend's family not long ago. He was taking treatments with no hope of recovery and was in constant pain. My friend finally said, it's okay if you don't want to do this. We love you.

He stopped taking the treatments and peacefully passed on within a month.

GravatarRes-that's also been my experience as well as both my parents, my brother and my spouse dying alone after days and bedside vigils, etc.

GravatarThird tier right-wing media whores are truly pathetic, aren't they?

"Ooh, I say publicly what others think privately. I'm the most controversial radio host in the world! Look at me! Look, damnit!"

GravatarNot to mention the latest lid clamped down on the memory hole.
Thersites

Thers,
I hope that doesn't get totally buried, as it's so important.

Tena,
I hope you're right. Certainly, some of the wing-nuts who populate a political e-mail forum in which I participate occasionally have been lambasting the Bushes and the Congress on exactly the issues you mention, federalism and privacy being very important to them. However, their tone is that the Rethugs are suffering from a temporary affliction that can easily be remedied, as soon as they are not so stressed by all that liberal hate being spewed by the lying Democrats. That's the problem, as I see it--with the forum-dwellers and with my in-laws: they perceive the Republicans as good, intelligent, patriotic people who occasionally forget themselves, and the Democrats as evil, socialist/communist America-haters who occasionally take the right position on an issue. And these people of whom I speak are not the lunatic fringe. (Well, they seem like lunatics to me, but compared to the Hal Turner types, they are about average.) Never in my life, except in December of 2000, have I wanted this much to be wrong about something.

GravatarMr. Wheeew--I believe there's an injunction against photographing Mrs. Schiavo at this point.

Since when did these batshit crazy law abusers bother to follow the rules?

GravatarMy advice for those considering law school - find a good state school, and don't take out thousands of dollars in loans for a private-school(albeit high-quality) law degree. I know whereof I speak.
Sinfonian

You generally have to take out lots of loans to go to a good state school, as well.

GravatarAnyone notice that the Turner page has been changed to remove the language cited by Atrios? Also, the archives are not accesible. Is Turner afraid a non-wingnut might actually see what he is all about?

GravatarBigvic--good point.

I am extremely disturbed regarding the arrest of children in this case. What sort of parent does this? Would this meet the standards for an investigation of child abuse? I honestly don't believe that in a situation such as this, a 10-year-old would act of his or her own volition.

Can't hide from the Wayback Machine!

GravatarRes Ipsa - well, as I posted last night at First Draft, I spend the last two days of my mother's life telling her unconscious self not to worry about me anymore, but to do what she had to do. If it was time for her to leave this life, to go and not to look back.

I do think sometimes you have to give a loved one permission, in a way, to quit holding on to life and to leave. My mother was worried about me because she knew how it was going to be for me - she and Daddy were my whole family, really. Daddy was gone already. So I didn't want Mom trying to cling to this world when she really needed to let go. So I kept telling her I'd be alright. She regained consciousness an hour before she died so we had the chance to say goodbye.

GravatarNot just the same technique but the same substantive mission.

GravatarSoprano - yeah, my problem is that I attribute more sense to people than I should, apparently. You'd think I'd learn - especially after November (although, I do think we won and I will always believe we won and that Kerry is our president.)

Anyway, I guess I should at the very least halve my optimism and get a little more steely-eyed about assessing the situation.

GravatarTena ...

Had the exact same experience with my dad. Best thing I've ever done for someone was to tell him it was okay to go.

GravatarIs there any chance Hal Turner is simply trying to make himself look good to his followers and is really sitting in a Denny's on I-95 stuffing himself on the Grand Slam special?

GravatarIf D students in freshman english and composition were to compare themselves with the best of Atrios, they might be surprised at how good they were.

But enough.

Little Reporting on Paranoia in High Places

America's National Socialism

Fritz Stern's recent speech about Nazism (at the 10th Annual Dinner of the Leo Baeck Institute) contains passages that eerily capture recent American right-wing political behavior. He notes, for example, "a group of intellectuals known as conservative revolutionaries demanded a new volkish authoritarianism, a Third Reich. Richly financed by corporate interests, they denounced liberalism as the greatest, most invidious threat, and attacked it for its tolerance, rationality and cosmopolitan culture." Sound familiar?

someone mentioned billmon this morning, and he has an interesting post about why he stopped writing, and why he can't stop writing. in the end he concludes it's futile, and i tend to agree, but we should not be silent, ever. till we get to gitmo, of course.

Gravatar"I think rather than debating... we progressives should arm ourselves with poverty and hunger statistics and confront anyone on the "save terri" side with things they can do..."

They only want to help those who cannot act or think. The unborn and Terri are pure dolls. Once out, a baby is a pain in the ass and starts sinning. And I don't have to tell you about women who can move and talk.

GravatarSallyH, someone mentioned that last night, althought I think they said something about an MGD. Sounded about right.

GravatarIf I was Special Agent Doozer, I'd be standing by the phone, waiting for that call from J Edgar.

Apparently Turner has already been visited by law enforcement agents for comments he made about the murders of Illinois Judge Joan Lefkow's (of the Matthew Hale case) husband and mother. Follow the David Neiwert link in Atrios' post for more.

Lacking a videophone, there'd be no way of telling, now would there? I mean unless Clyde was in the background yelling "He's naked!!" or something.

Actually, I was going to call him J Edgar Fashionplate, but for some wierd reason, changed my mind...

Gravatar"They only want to help those who cannot act or think. The unborn and Terri are pure dolls. Once out, a baby is a pain in the ass and starts sinning. And I don't have to tell you about women who can move and talk."
Peeperkorn

Them's fightin' words.

As for babies starting to sin as soon as they arrive, I'm really not sure that screaming for food and comfort constitutes anything remotely close to sinning. Now waking up parents at 3 a.m., that's another matter.

GravatarIs there any chance Hal Turner is simply trying to make himself look good to his followers and is really sitting in a Denny's on I-95 stuffing himself on the Grand Slam special?

True enough, but if Instahack et. al. can bray and bark about how Ward Churchill somehow represents the left, then I say we make Hal Turner the face of the modern right: after all, he says he says what they all think ...

Gravatarsallyh - I am extremely disturbed regarding the arrest of children in this case. What sort of parent does this? Would this meet the standards for an investigation of child abuse? I honestly don't believe that in a situation such as this, a 10-year-old would act of his or her own volition.

Well, if it was up to me, I'd order homestudies of those households in which the parents thought it was in their children's best interests to drag them to this fucking goddamned freak show in Florida and encourage them to break the law. As far as I'm concerned, that is piss poor parenting, to say the least.

Gravatarmy father totally rejected the idea of a supreme being even onto his death.

you can really make this shit up in your head as you go along. then all you have to do is add belief. it works, i know.

GravatarSallyh -- You're forgetting about Original Sin. An interesting point for the Fundies: If a foetus is a human being, is a foetus tainted with Original Sin?

GravatarSeems like Hal is back from his trip. New posting on his website. What a nutjob.

GravatarAnyone notice that the Turner page has been changed to remove the language cited by Atrios?

Hell, they cleaned that place out down to the floorboards. Could be the important thing ol' Hal's doing involves Interstate Flight to Avoid?
And I'll bet CNN is all over it if he is.....yeah, right.

GravatarPeggy Noonan's column yesterday stated that we (liberals) are "in love with death."

She has a major non-wingnut forum (WS Journal) in which to make these kind of pronouncements. She is, after all, nice, sweet Peggy from a good family, not a crazy Baptist (no offense to Baptists. Just sayin'). The Repugs I know still give credence to Peggy. Sad, but true.

However, the real issue for the rational conservatives is money - always has been, always will be.

They'll forgive BushCo - Jeb can forget 2008, but so what - because their ONLY issue is money - taxes and wealth. Period.

I can't decide whether CNN is gorging on this story in order to expose to its sane, mainstream viewers the freakish mob who've empowered the Bushes, or if they're really in on the scam.

The mainstream hates this story. They don't necessarily hate the Repugs.

GravatarThat original sin debate: do you think all this stuff was made up by a bunch of dudes sitting around in the desert with nothing else to do while the women slaved away?

GravatarPeople actually live on Paterson Plank Road? In what? Warehouses? Makes me kind of curious, mebbe even enough to ride down and take a look.

GravatarRes Ipsa - Had the exact same experience with my dad. Best thing I've ever done for someone was to tell him it was okay to go.

Res Ipsa - well, for me, letting go of my mother's life was when I realized that love isn't about what I want, but about love - if you see what I mean at all. I'm having trouble getting this out in way that makes sense.

I started seeing my relationships with everyone in my life differently. I started to realize that if I really loved my mother, I was going to have to suffer for it. I started seeing after she was gone that if I really loved Mr. Tena, I had to quit trying to make our relationship about my love for him. Because all that is is a person being in love with their own love for someone - if you see what I mean. You either really love another, or you are in love with your own feelings for them. If you really love the other person, what you want no longer matters as much as what that person needs and wants.

Ok, I'm flogging the obvious all over the place - I'll stop.

GravatarOK, when did a State Governor become a "Sovereign"?? (3rd to last paragraph)

This guy is as nutty as ol' Sherman Skolnick. I'll bet they're buds.

GravatarThat original sin debate: do you think all this stuff was made up by a bunch of dudes sitting around in the desert with nothing else to do while the women slaved away?

I'm thinking it happened one night after drinking a little too much wine and eating some strange buds that might have been picked up in the desert. 'Cause it damn sure is something you'd have to come up with while high.

GravatarJust stopped in for a moment.

I trust that starting Monday, we'll get real news again:

Condi sez to Israel, don't build more settlements (duh)

USA selling fighter planes to Pakistan, India pissed

Oh yeah, Iraq and Lebanon

there must be something else we should know about.

GravatarFootloose--fair bet on that one.

GravatarFootloose -- I think Original Sin was made up by a bunch of dudes sitting around in the desert who hated their sexuality, hated women because of sexuality, and who hated children because they were the result of sexuality.

Fuck 'em.

GravatarI do think sometimes you have to give a loved one permission, in a way, to quit holding on to life and to leave.

Tena,
I had a similar experience with my mom three decades ago and with my brother-in-law a couple of years ago. I'm very glad that Mom woke up for a little while that laat night, although what we talked about was a little weird. She told me not to tell my uncle (her brother) how much money I had and exacted a promise from me that I would finish my master's degree (which I finally did in 1999--better late than never). She also told me not to hang around and miss classes the next day. So, I did what she said, and they called me out of class the next morning to tell me she had died and that they wanted me at the hospital. Hospice was not an option in those days and doctors didn't do extraordinary measures much at that time, either, if a person was clearly terminal. Mom was kept comfortable for the last few months, which is all we could ask for.

It amazes me that hospices in the U.S., as opposed to the U.K., are not allowed to use heroin in palliative care. Heroin has the same pain-killing effect as morphine without the excessive sleepiness (except for a few minutes after it is first administered), allowing the dying person to have much more pain-free awake time with loved ones or to settle personal affairs.

I think the initial reference above was to an extremely "religious" relative of the dying person refusing to let go, rather than the dying person him- or herself. It does seem peculiar that those who think the afterlife is a "beautiful shore" often are the most vociferous opponents of letting someone go there. Maybe they think their relatives are going to the other place, instead.

Well said. When people close to me die, I feel responsibility to carry something of what was good about them along in my life.

GravatarToonscribe - well, hatred often is only really fear. I tend to think that they didn't so much hate women, as feared them.

You have to think that before there really was any kind of science, it must have been a source of some deep terror to men that women get pregnant and give birth. It's a huge mystery when it isn't well-understood what is happening. And it all takes place out of sight.

Protests Outside Schiavo Hospice Chaotic

Sat Mar 26, 7:57 AM ET

By JILL BARTON, Associated Press Writer

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - Jennifer Johnson, barefoot and in her pajamas, ran to her grandfather's bedside once a hospice worker said his death was moments away. She got there — one minute too late. Johnson said the chaos outside the hospice where Terri Schiavo is dying kept her from saying goodbye.

When Johnson arrived, a police officer demanded identification; she had none. And after a hospice employee cleared her, another officer halted her for a search with a metal detector.

The delays lasted three to four minutes — the last of her grandfather's life.

"It's a terrible, extra obstacle to put in front of a family. ... Everything is about Schiavo," Johnson said. "It's all about her and in my family's case, it cost us dearly."

GravatarEric - yep, I went to Washington University, a peer institution to Emory, more than a decade ago, and the disparity was at least as pronounced then as it is now. I know it's still expensive at a state school, but the comparison is what is startling. And I'd probably have the same career success had I gone, say, to the University of Missouri (although I probably wouldn't have the same wife now ... ).

GravatarSallyh--

I don't believe in original sin, but fundies do. They don't draw a straight line between babies and sin. But they show preference for people who cannot act on (or have) sinful thoughts.

For my part I do prefer women who can think and move. I was noting that they're troublesome in ways religious zealots find particularly maddening. That gladdens me.

GravatarDavid Brooks completely missed the point (not that this is anything new). He said that discussions on the right began with the sanctity of life vs. those on the left, which began with legalisms.

We didn't miss the point. We simply recognized that it isn't our place to determine whether Mrs. Schiavo lives or dies, and we trusted that those close to her could make that decision and that the courts would uphold her rights.

Her lawyers, however, have said Schiavo - whose dehydrated body has begun to shut down - may not survive the weekend."

I'm waiting for the Schindlers, when the mortician is about ready to close the casket, to say "No, she just spoke. Didn't you hear her? She said 'don't put me in grave.'"
=================================

"The Schindlers are still holding out hope for an unlikely intervention by Gov. Jeb Bush, who has said he has done everything in his power to take custody of Schiavo.

As of Saturday afternoon, Schiavo had been without food or water for eight full days, and doctors have said she would probably die within a week or two of her feeding tube being pulled.

Her lawyers, however, have said Schiavo - whose dehydrated body has begun to shut down - may not survive the weekend."

GravatarWhat's up with everybody playin' GOD, that was so last year. :|

GravatarHal Turner, Ann Coulter, Michelle Mallkin: The heart, mind and soul of the Republican Party.

C'mon, CNN, give 'em a show in prime time.

GravatarFootloose - Yeah, I agree about the bleeding and started to say something about that, too.

Everything sexual about men is right out in the open. Everything sexual about women is mostly hidden, except for the secondary sexual characteristics - breasts, hair, lips.

We're scary.

Gravatar"Mr. President, you are authorized under Title 10 United States Code, Sub-Title "E", Part Two, Chapter 1211, Sub-Section 12406 (2) to call into service the National Guard in sufficient numbers to quell this rebellion or insurrection..."

Hey, Hal Turner may be on to something here. Bush isn't just "authorized" he duty bound to do this. His oath REQUIRES him to uphold the constitution. By not doing what he is required to do, he must now be impeached!

Impeach Bush for failing to do his duty and save Terri!

IMPEACH BUSH!!!

I like it!

Gravatar...hatred often is only really fear. I tend to think that they didn't so much hate women, as feared them.
-- Tena

Tena -- I agree with you up to a point, but i think there's a little something extra in the equation that pushes fear over to such visceral, primal hatred. I mean -- to come up with a doctrine like Original Sin which automatically damns the entire human race unless they are saved by Jeebus makes fear as a word almost meaningless unless it's defined to an extreme to become abject terror. And I don't think they were filled with terror, I think they were filled with a homocidal hatred, which may have started with women, but spilled over to embrace the whole human race and the "Satan-constructed" world they saw around them.

GravatarIf you drag your knuckles when you walk, live in a trailer and married your cousin, this sites for you. Hal hates Jews, Blacks, Mexicans, women, foreigners, liberals, etc.. Stupid and ignorant don't begin to describe this rancid piece of smegma...

I'm surprised the cocksucker knows how to operate a computer, much less have a website!

Gravatar"to come up with a doctrine like Original Sin which automatically damns the entire human race unless they are saved by Jeebus "

That won't allow babies into heaven unless they're baptized?

I was raised Catholic and I never believed THAT bullshit for one moment, anymore than someone could go to hell for eating a hot dog on fucking Friday!

Religion stops a functioning brain!

GravatarOT, because I am sick of this story, a Wal-Mart board member was forced to resign "after an internal probe turned up evidence of financial improprieties of up to half-a-million dollars." His picture makes it seem like he's been enjoying way too many of those healthy snacks they sell at the malwart.

GravatarSomebody should tell Mr. Turner not to get his shorts in such a bunch. The House Committee has cancelled the hearing they issued the subpoena for. The subpoena is presumably cancelled as well.

Moron.

Gravatarlive in a trailer

What's particularly wrong with living in a trailor?

GravatarIsn't it mixing meat and dairy at one meal that's not kosher?
Footloose

Why isn't an egg considered meat? After all isn't it a pre-porn chicken.

Gravatarinteresting story, quentin. i've been wondering how the others with loved ones in the hospice center are doing dealing with the circus. when bush made appearances, the protest zones were well away from the event. why hasn't something like that been done here where grieving people are just trying to visit their loved ones in their last hours?

GravatarHistory has borne out again and again that the majority in this country has an extremely short attention span and often rewrites history based on a lingering emotion.--monkeywrench
thats a very perceptive comment. and as someone said above, the "sensible" repubs view such episodes (Schiavo) as aberrations, because the right wing media machine has been so successful at branding dems as traitors and perverts and repubs as warm fuzzy patriots and family values supporting mensches.

GravatarI gotta go but not before I mention that the #1 thing that men obviously know they got screwed on: multiple orgasm. Geesh, isn't this the thinking behind power mongers come to think of it...

GravatarToonscribe - It's a huge huge question what has driven the patriarchal control that the major monotheistic religions advocate. I'm sure it is very complex. But for some religious people, I agree that seeing the material world as Satan's kingdom certainly calls for hatred of the material world.

All of which begs the question of why they are so intent upon keeping the body of Terri Shiavo in this sinful world. The fundies in Florida are totally perverting what I see Christianity as really about. But since I'm no expert on theology, my opinion is just my opinion. I think they are deeply twisted in their beliefs.

Gravatarpre-porn chicken.

Squawk!

Gravatarpre-porn chicken? ain't gonna touch that one.

Gravatarid hoped that gerbils were as extreme as it was going to get. now, pre porn chicken. just another slippery slope i guess.

Gravatarthe "sensible" repubs view such episodes (Schiavo) as aberrations

You're making the same error that you find objectionable when made by others: Generalizing the critique of an individual to the point of denouncing a group.

Gravatarlb0313 - All christians are not uniformly bashed here. In fact, the only commenters whom I am aware of actually bashing Robert Jeffers, who is a minister, are trolls and one regular who is very upset with religion.

I think frankly that a lot of people are more sensitive to criticism than they need to be. We have Prior Aelred as a regular commenter here, not to mention left rev. They aren't insulted. I don't get why others seem to be so determined to be insulted.

GravatarMeant to say WHO's

GravatarI think this will stick. People started to pay attention during the campaign, but were only exposed to the usual campaign type rhetoric. Remember the NY Times killing story of the electronic box srapped to w during the debates. People have remained somewhat engaged since then, hence w's sinking poll numbers. I have hope for the midterms. All we need is one house, then, let the investigations begin.

Weird.

Gravatarthanks monica, trashing people for where they live continues to bug me about this site. as does bashing all christians....

Please.

No, living in a trailer is not shameful - - neither is running for president while being from Massachusetts. However, I think the 'trailer' remark upthread was what is called a "rhetorical advice" and was not necessarily and indictment of all trailer-dwellers.

Now, the 'persecuted Christian' affectation is pure nonsense.

GravatarI mean, who thought it would be a
good idea to consume something that
came out of a chicken's ass?

=============================

GravatarQuiltsquito - From your fingers to the ears of the good goddesses. I think you're right. This whole thing has made a deep impression on people in this country because it is one thing everyone can relate to. There is no such thing as a household that has not been touched by death anywhere in this world. People get this.

And people are pretty fucking upset with the Repugs over this interference.

GravatarAre there country & western songs about the Schiavo mess yet?
-My feeding tube's a Budweiser
-I fell into a vegetative state and got your love all over me.
-I met her at a hospice and now I'm pissed
-The trailer seems lonely without your bulimic vomit
-She's a husk that makes be lust.
-You're starving eats a hole in my heart.

Gravatarsallyh - I am extremely disturbed regarding the arrest of children in this case. What sort of parent does this? Would this meet the standards for an investigation of child abuse? I honestly don't believe that in a situation such as this, a 10-year-old would act of his or her own volition.

-----

there seems to be a strain of mouth breathers out there who apparently crave drama in their lives and want to be part of whatever soap opera is going on at the moment and who think is appropriate to drag kids into their pathology

one of the worst examples of this was the parents who dragged their kids to the shrine on the shore of the pond where that woman drowned her children -- imagine taking young kids their and telling them what? a mommy [like me] took her little boys [like you] here and killed them. [but of course something like that would never happen to you] probably seriously traumatized dozens of children -- and then of course one whole carload of them were left in the SUV managed to loosen the brake and drowned in the pond

Gravatarsteve simels - Weird.

I can see eating the first egg (non sentient animals eat them) and I can see eating the first oyster (non sentient animals eat those, too.) But the first artichoke? Someone explain how they figured that out.

GravatarWow first it was denunciation over republican attcaks over Michael Schiavo and now some on this blog are doing the same to the parents. Have some fricken decency! They are about to lose their daughter, yeah they may not be facing facts and may be using every avenue, whether you aprove or not to keep their daughter alive. But remember they are her parents, there is no greater love than a mothers love.
They may be flawed individuals but so what? who here is perfect
Politicians should have never got involved in this tragic case, compromise should have been sought in the beginning. But remember the public will never know all the facts about this woman and her life.
If you want to attack the republicans go for it but show some fricken sympathy for the parents. You don't know what you would do if you were in their position.

GravatarI think the 'trailer' remark upthread was what is called a "rhetorical advice" and was not necessarily and indictment of all trailer-dwellers.

The remark was something I pulled from the Amazon review site for Tuner's show/website. I thought that was clear.

Gravatar"Rhetorical Device"

For eff's sake, I really have to start proofreading my posts....

GravatarI am extremely disturbed regarding the arrest of children in this case.

Hm. Doesn't bother me; what business is it of mine? What if antiwar protestors' children were arrested with their parents? [I know plenty of folks who brought their kids to demonstrations.]

Gravatarby non-sentient animals (and I think I mischaracterized them, frankly) I meant animals without higher faculties that allow them to reason about what they are eating. In other words, it is something that is mainly instinct plus probably learned behavior from their parents.

GravatarYou don't know what you would do if you were in their position.

I do. I'd face reality and let go, then set about on the grieving process, like any mature human does.

Gravatarpre-porn chicken.

I learned that from Holden a few days ago.

GravatarSomebody yesterday made the
comparison between the Schiavo
circus and the great Billy Wilder
movie "Ace in the Hole" (AKA
"The Big Carnival").

Wilder only wished he was cynical
enough to invent what's going on
today.
Just saying.

Gravatarok, first off, I surrender. I am certainly not trying to be overly sensitive or generalizing or any of the above. I simply raise the point that rhetorical devices, if that is indeed what they are, are troublesome and complicated.

Calling someone out on one of them shouldn't lead to 'why are you here' type stuff. I am here because I am a liberal who takes joy from many of the opinions and much of the wit expressed by folks I've met here.

Yes. But it depends on how the Repugs handle themselves going forward. And how - if - the Democrats get pro-active and present a positive messgae, narrative, whatever, which clearly separates them from the Repugs.

How I would love it if this were the proverbial straw -

but the economic issues which will be coming down the pike in the next year -
whoa! BIg mess - and maybe irreversible. Hope I'm wrong.

How the hell did that happen?

Gravatarcastlereagh - Nope, sorry. The Schindlers are not behaving like decent loving parents. They are frankly creepy and I have nothing good to say about them.

You're barking up the wrong tree here.

The Schindlers lost their daughter 15 years ago. They have objectified her body and are letting people use it for politics. It is disgraceful. I hope I never see the Schindlers again once this is over. They totally disgust me.

GravatarStrange things going on in the US I see.

Seems to me from Daily KOS piece that the funky-christs are full of holy hurbris and are starting to seriously think about taking the law into their own hands. Seeing how both Bushes helped to throw gasoline on a raging fire, the situation is getting worst. While there maybe some "moderate repug's" in the Congress that "think" they have the situation "under control", all it will take is a devoutly, religious McVey-type to break the dam and holy hell will break loose. Perhaps when Terri dies and maybe the Pope, it will be seen as the start of the Rapture. That means secular laws are no longer valid to those fundy-christians...christ "is" coming.

Secondly, a lot of what I read so far this evening seems to indicate a trend by the repug's to miniminalize their efforts and hands in the Terri fiasco. They are seriously hoping their base isn't too bright to realize that they just broke all the convenants they have claimed the Democrats have been guilty of breaks for many years. I do remember reading yesterday, I think, the repug's were already starting to backpedal on any and all issues concerning their breach of Constutional powers. Interesting was David Broders column in the NYT that, IMHO, seems to indicate that this single issue has leveled the playing field between repug's and Democrats... the repug's attempt to legislate the Judicary is equal to the Democrats filerbustering Bush's judical nominees...neither may be good politics, however, one is legal and the other isn't.

Sorry for the rant, but I spent a wonderful day with the top off the car and cruising down the autobahn at 85 mph from Trier to Heidelberg to Frankfurt and back...did I mention is was a warm and sunny spring day too?

regards

.

GravatarHypothetical situations are always so easy aren't they?

Since I've had to deal with loved ones dying many times, this isn't a hypothetical.

Isn't the ultimate goal for a Christian to go to Heaven? Then why in the world would someone not rejoice when a loved one, whose body had been made into something useless, had the opportunity to "cross over"?

Her parents are mentally twisted, pure and simple.

Gravatari love the "how did it first get eaten?" question. i think the case of albert hoffman and LSD is a useful window into that process. he was fucking around, ingested it, had a good time and subsequently spread the word. if he had died from poisoning, oh well. you never hear about the guy who ate the bad berries 'cause he died. the person who left the honey out to long and then gave it a taste, well they're a hero. in fact, i'm going to pour out a little of my coffee (uberthanks for that one people) in respect of those fallen humans who at least had the courage to put some wierd shit in their mouths and then died. this one's for you, fellow humans.

Gravatar"...they perceive the Republicans as good, intelligent, patriotic people who occasionally forget themselves, and the Democrats as evil, socialist/communist America-haters who occasionally take the right position on an issue. And these people of whom I speak are not the lunatic fringe."
Sopran0

I think you have a very important point there and the way to combat it is to seize the moral high ground in this debate.
The immorality of kids going to bed and to school hungry on the wealthiestnation on earth while creating tax breaks for wealthy people - Isn't it easier to squeeze a camel through the eye of a needle than to get a rich man into the kingdom of heaven?
The New Testament should be embraced and pointed to all the time - it favors the good guys
- Never let anyone tell you what's in that book! Read it yourself - love your neighbor as you love yourself and God - no quid pro quos regarding color of skin system of belief gender - force them to cease and desist with the name calling the vitriol the stalking horses and paranoia in their arguments - Call them on being unChristian every time they are - Early in the campaign last year Kerry struck a raw nerve when he quoted from the New Testament = Something along the lines of, It's not enough for a man to have faith he must have deeds kindnesses to those less fortunate, to show for his faith of which Bush has little or none -
I think a lot of us secular types went into adulthood no longer believing the dogma, but still believing in the basic tenets of the Christian religion - Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you - judge not lest ye be judged - not wanting to be too judgemental here, but judging is what they do best! A whole community of trash talking invective slinging hate mongering talking heads and spokespersons - Right wing spokespeople make judgements and pronouncements on people's character out loud and in the press daily instead of discussing the issue at hand - It's time for one big long fillibuster until the American people appreciate what it is the left stands for instead of constantly being misrepresented by these blathering hatemongers -
There is a common wisdom to be tapped and it must be done thoughtfully - Blessed are the meek - turn the other cheek it's not socialism commie-pinko stuff it's being the good Samaritan and looking out for the other guy - It's the Christian thing to do -
my twopenny's worth

Gravatarcastlereagh - If you would read the fucking comments, you might see that this is way more than theoretical. Most of us have been in similar situations with our own loved ones.

Get your head up and out of your rear end.

GravatarYou don't know what you would do if you were in their position.

Hypothetical situations are always so easy aren't they?

castlereagh

For many people here, the sitation is not hypothetical. Numerous posters have told us stories of how they dealt with similar situations with dying mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters. Thousands of Americans face the exact same scenario every day and manage to handle it with dignity, rather than turning it into a media circus and publicly slandering the family member who disagrees with their view. The things they are saying about Michael Schiavo are disgusting--grief is no excuse.

GravatarI'm going to watch "Chisholm '72; Unbought & Unbossed" tonight. Has anybody else seen it?

Gravatarand tena, I certainly didn't intend on being 'determined to be insulted' - I hate that type. You've certainly always been a voice of reason in this place, so I must indeed have lost my compass here somewhere.

GravatarOh, look, the mentally-challenged loon has come for a visit.

GravatarFunny, it knew just who I was talking about...

GravatarIs there a genetic predisposition

How the hell did that happen?
steve simels

It's a natural process all grapes develop the fungus to cause fermintation, likewise with grains. Ever read about the drunken elephants going on a rampage after eating fermented fruits?

GravatarI hate the name, Joshua. And Jebediah.

in case you don't know, Jeb's real name isn't jebediah but John Ellis Bush (J.E.B. - get it?) probably John Ellis Bush III. Jeb sounds more jes' folks, but bushes find biblical names common. everyone's named john george ellis herbert walker prescott pierce bush

GravatarHow the hell did that happen?

Someone squeezed some grapes to make a drink but didn't like it. Added some sugar to sweeten it and went on to other things. Came back later to drink some of the grape juice and got drunk off their ass. Then they invented bartering so they could concentrate on perfecting the drink.

GravatarBOBO watch. He does that thing that is soooo annoying and so BOBO.
He supposes to speak for "social liberals," misdefines what we are saying and then after setting up the straw dog, knocks it down or ridicules it. No social liberal needs BOBO to "explain" our position on Schiavo or anything else. Repugnant.

"You are saying, as liberals do say, that society should be neutral and allow people to make their own choices. You are saying, as liberals do say, that we should be tolerant and nonjudgmental toward people who make different choices."

What is wrong is to impose your moral view on others, when that moral view is not an absolute like up and dow, or death. What is wrong is to turn this country into a theocracy and misread the Constitution. What is wrong is preach a culture of life, then deny health care and education and food stamps and child care to millions while siphoning off billions to the nation's wealthiest.

GravatarFunny, it knew just who I was talking about...

I know, OCdave - it's really tough figuring out your "high-level" comments after the 75th time you say the same thing.

Carry on with the "ignoring" that you keep preaching about.

Gravatarcastlereagh-
See, that's the thing. Dealing with death is the most unhypothetical situation in the world. It's not easy, but it is natural.

i'm going to lean ted's way on this. you put shit in a barrell or pot to eat later. then "oops, we forgot to eat the grapes. i wonder if they're still good?"

GravatarA good example of freeper thought process:

re: "he's made certain she will never speak again."

True, but he still can't afford to have an autopsy on her body. Don't know why, what he thinks it would uncover. If he has nothing to fear I would think he would welcome a post mortem exam just to clear his name. Like he cares about his name!

GravatarI'm going to watch "Chisholm '72; Unbought & Unbossed" tonight. Has anybody else seen it?
monica_nyc

I have! It's terrific, especially the part about the Democratic Convention. Remember, back in those days the convention wasn't scripted and produced: they actually selected the candidate at the conventions and things could get hot.

I heard an interview of the woman who did the documentary and she said that she completed it in time to show Ms. Chisholm before she died. Apparently she approved it highly.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

GravatarMeanwhile, in the drug-and-gang-torn streets of urban America, another child was shot in the head. None of these fundie assholes give a shit about his life, though. Because he's black, and probably poor, and that is of course his fault:

Donte Manning wanted to stay out just a little longer.

School was closed the next day and lots of children were still outside, savoring a chilly taste of spring, Donte's stepfather said, so he agreed to an extra half-hour.

It turned out to be a half-hour too long.

Just before 10 p.m. Thursday, according to D.C. police, 9-year-old Donte was shot in the head, struck by a lone gunman who opened fire on at least a dozen children playing on a Columbia Heights street dogged by drug dealing.

Donte was the only one hit. Last night, the third-grader was in critical condition at Children's Hospital with a bullet lodged in the back of his head. Investigators are trying to figure out who shot him and whether the gunfire had anything to do with an earlier drug raid on the same block of 13th Street NW.

GravatarI don't agree with shindlers and like many I have seen lovedones die in agonising pain and I am truly sorry for those here who have suffered in similar circumstances. But some compassion for people who are about to lose their daughter - what ever you think of them wouldn't go astray. If your going to judge, judge the politicians and media who have blown this case out of proportion and made it into some awful soap opera

Gravatarsteve simels - I think a book on the history of beer came out several years ago. I know there's one on salt and on coffee.

The history (and prehistory) of food is fascinating. Anthropology recognizes it as a subdiscipline as does Archeology.

You can find lots of information on it.

GravatarAnother dim-witted question:

I saw a prerecorded interview of two Schindler relatives (I was vacuuming during the start and caught neither their names nor relationship) on CBS this morning that was disgusting. Because it was prerecorded and used two cameras, there were plenty of opportunities for "thoughtful" nods and fingers-on-chin reaction shots of the interviewer. I could swear it was done in Diane Sawyer/Baba Wawa soft-focus also. The leading, softball questions by the report were disgusting. It would've been less so if the interviewer had just gone over to the protesters and took up a sign of her own.

My question is, with this issue resonating so negatively in many different ways with a great majority of Americans across the demographic spectrum, why is the MSM shilling the fundy/Schindler side of the story? Posters here have cited a few level-headed or calling-B.S. performances by pundits and talking heads, but the rank-and-file reports seem (however fake or cynical it may be) deeply invested in "Terri's Story." Is this just about apeing Fox? Aren't there a lot of Fox-heads aghast at this power grab as well? Is the fundy audience large enough to be worth the pandering? I didn't think they were much into teevee.

GravatarOT Hasn't occured to me yet, although it should, that torture will not only be used to elicit confessions, but once accepted torture will be a form of "therapy".

GravatarHere's how a peabrain works:

If someone posts an opinion which is contrary to most opinions on a certain subject, then the person is a "brownshirt". If the same someone posts and opinion which is in line with most opinions on a different subject, that person is "Eddie Haskell", ie, intending to deceive to... God knows what.

It's really fascinating (in a car wreck kind of way) to see what anonymity, paranoia, a persecution complex, OCD, muddy thinking, and low-wattage brain power do when combined ala OCdave.

They don't disgust me. I just think they're insane.

GravatarArchibald Tuttle,

O so True!

When I woke up this morning, Charles Osgood was on AFN radio. I was in the shower and only caught that middle of the essay on Pat Robertson. What I heard was outrageous.

Osgood had recordings of Robertson saying that for the US to get the insurgents holed-up in towns in Iraq, they should surround and seal off entry in the town. Then shut off the water, electricity, and food going in and tell the town people they'll get their electricity, water and food once they turn over the insurgents. At least thats what I heard.

What is appalling is that here is a "chistian minister" with a "loyal following" that "listens to every word he says as if it were from God" spouting off this tripe.

It makes me wonder if the "true beliefs" of the GOP are based on personal ambition rather than the truth. Truth to a fundy-christian seems to be righting the evils of the world per someone's elses definition rather than one's own. Kinda like being in a club of like-minded individuals.

Your post just reinforces what I was thinking.

Thanks!

Gravatarjudge the politicians and media who have blown this case out of proportion

The family willingly has engaged in this spectacle. They outright encourage the defamation of Terri's husband, judges, and so on.

They can go fuck themselves.

Gravatarcastlereagh - Who made you moral arbiter of our feelings? Look to your own conscience and leave ours alone.

The Schindlers are opportunistic people who have allowed their daughter's remains to become the center of a fucking freak show. Loving parents don't do that. They have had it in their power from moment to moment to stop this. They are the ones who have fought against: Terri's husband, every single doctor, every single judge, every singe ad litem on and on and on.

It is a disgraceful. They have stripped their daughter's remains of all dignity.

Go the fuck away, you moral midget.

GravatarI have! It's terrific

Good to hear that. I'm really looking forward to seeing it -- the DVD was checked out for a solid month at my local video store.

GravatarTena:
Thanks for the tip.

GravatarBut some compassion for people who are about to lose their daughter - what ever you think of them wouldn't go astray.

No one is required to have a specific opinion -- nor any opinion at all -- of the individuals involved in Theresa Schiavo's case. That's rather part of the point.

GravatarIs our children learning?

Is my computer working?

Hmmmm...we'll see.

Happy 2:30 in the afternoon, moonbats.

GravatarIs the fundy audience large enough to be worth the pandering? I didn't think they were much into teevee.

Oh, come now. TV ministries are the lifeblood of the fundy stuff. When the first TV satellites went up, fundies took advantage of a quirk in the laws to hitch a ride on the waves and get cheap, national distribution.

GravatarMy only question to the Schindler is this: why would you keep your daughter, who is in a irreversible condition, alive to be a media circus freak?

GravatarWon't Terri's soul just get to heaven a little quicker now that she's no longer able to enjoy the fruits of life? Marching into the arms of god on Easter weekend - what could be nicer? We all die.

GravatarMr. Wheeew,

" Is this just about apeing Fox? Aren't there a lot of Fox-heads aghast at this power grab as well? Is the fundy audience large enough to be worth the pandering? I didn't think they were much into teevee."

I have been wondering the same things myself.

The media is misreading the populace here if the overdrive is on account of a perceived interest on the part of the public.

I haven't talked to anyone who isn't sick of this story and annoyed all the way to furious at BUshCo for interfering in a private matter.

However, if we are sliding toward fascism in this country, and I tend to think that we are, then a seemingly disconnected media is part of the deal.

I don't know. Are there any media experts in the house?

Gravatarthe media and politicians could't have refused them?

Your argument is that the scorn should be reserved for politicians and the media. I, and others, have pointed out that the Schindlers have encouraged this whole spectacle. Just because politicians and the media suck, doesn't mean the Schindlers don't as well. They all suck.

The fact that no one presses them on their responsibility for Terri's plight (why the hell was she bulemic?) only underscores the fact of how bad they are. If they showed one iota of a sense of responsibility for all this, then I might be inclined to show they some sympathy.

GravatarIs the fundy audience large enough to be worth the pandering? I didn't think they were much into teevee.

The pandering isn't limited to television, and the size of the minority is not the target. Republicans pander to the intensity of that voting bloc.

GravatarWhy shouldn`t Christians be bashed ?
They don`t hesitate to bash me, and have the arrogance to proclaim that my country is " under Gawd "

I want to see a war for stupid reasons on our own soil. I am jelious of the Iraqis, Serbs and all the nations the united states has ruined for "our freedom", now its our turn. Meanwhile, I kick back grab a beer and watch the madness unfold.

GravatarYou don't know what you would do if you were in their position

==============================

Since taking on the responsibility that a marriage entails, I would assume that my daughters, wonderful, smart young women, had discussed with their husbands what their wishes were in this type of situation.

And, I mentioned this the other day, any couple contemplating marriage discusses children. I remember distinctly telling Mr. QL, that if god forbid something should go terribly wrong during delivery, he was not to keep me going on artifical life support. Knowing this, I would defer to the wishes of my child, and allow the person she chose to make this decision.

GravatarHappy 2:34!

I don't think that they can face the reality of the fact that she is gone. The litigation, the appeals, the attention from the media and all of the politics...it has let them avoid facing the truth and moving on with their grief.

That is my guess.

I've been wondering about this stuff too. In the past, I always thought the media were down with BushCo because of the money involved, and because of who owned 'em. But all of that is inconsistent with promoting radical fundamentalism, and refusing to counter fundie hysteria by, say, broadcasting Terri's CAT scans. The idea that they thought they had something to beat up the Dems with, and it blew up in their faces, is a plausible one. But if that's true, they ought to be backpedaling like crazy now that it's obvious things are spiraling out of control.

The other possibility is that this is something along the lines of what Ernst Cassirer worried about in (I think) "The Myth of the State"...a marriage of modern media with the worst sort of premodern, superstitious, tribalist thinking, for the benefit of authoritarian government.

I guess we'll find out before too long.

GravatarAnd for those interested, here's an online version of the Sinclair Lewis tome It Can't Happen Here.

GravatarThe fact that no one presses them on their responsibility for Terri's plight (why the hell was she bulemic?) only underscores the fact of how bad they are. If they showed one iota of a sense of responsibility for all this, then I might be inclined to show they some sympathy.

Maybe it's because I haven't een following the case 24-7 but isn't their some dispute between the parenst and the husband over this? But I commed your daughters for making their wishes known - living wills should be compulsory or barring that encouraged by governemnt.

Eating disorders are usually caused by a multiple of reasons, family and peer pressure to conform may be one reason.

GravatarOh, come now. TV ministries are the lifeblood of the fundy stuff.

Maybe it's just skew in my personal experience - I'm more exposed to the suburban-style megachurch, SUV-dirivng, semi-affluent-or-better fundies - but they are proud in their non-viewing and ignorance of teevee. They have lots of fundy videos (the insipid Jonah and the Veggie-whatevers being high on the list) and music, but not much teevee.

Of course, the biggest fundy I know personally likes to tell his co-workers (I'm one of them) how he and his wife use anal sex as natural birth control. Maybe I just know mutant fundies, or somethin'.

GravatarAnd David Brooks has the call to critize "the left" for worrying only about "quality of life." This spectacle is beneath contempt.

And David is right this very minute selling all his worldly possesions, giving all his money to the poor, and repenting with sackcloth and ashes, right?

End of story. Try again, Unka Karl!

GravatarOh, and while the fundies argue that evolution is a myth, the H5N1 virus seems to be evolving rather quickly towards a strain with high pandemic potential.

That, I suppose, will be God's judgment on us for letting Terri die.

GravatarThe media is misreading the populace here if the overdrive is on account of a perceived interest on the part of the public.

Wolcott has had some posts on this recently.

GravatarStrange that the Law does not matter anymore. Why? Because it doesn't "allow" for special situations that occur in life's mishaps.

Same can be said for the News as well. The "news" itself is not what's important. What is important is "how" the news is "packaged" for the "intended" audience. Give them what they want to hear in a manner that is appeasing, satisfying, and don’t not grate against their perception of the world, as they know it.

Religion too suffers the same fate as well. Archibald Tuttle's post nails the problem with religion. They have lost their way. What is strange is their pent up anger and frustration and their ad hominid attacks on any and everything that does not agree with them. While religion may be good for the soul, it definitely wasn't meant for the mind.

All I'm trying to say is that the repug's have some serious problems with life, their own system of values, what they truly believe is right, and above all, a willingness to work with others who have disparate interests towards a common goal for all that is representative of the common interests of both sides.

Unless the Democrats and Liberals can figure out a way to combat these forces in subtle ways, we're gonna be locked in a civil war of political one-upmanship for a long time. And episodes like what we're experiencing now will be common every federal election cycle.

Steve, I'm going to give you a clue about something. It's okay not to have opinions about everything. I have no opinion about the Warren Commission.

Problem with lots of people here is they feel obliged to have an opinion on every conceivable subject. Consequently, they rely on a lot of cliches and can't actually discuss things when pressed. Then that of course leads to insults etc.

Think about that a bit, OK?

If it works, it'll be a tragedy.

If it doesn't, they'll post-mortem the failure and do better next time.

The Republican congress overstepping their bounds to stop the courts from starving Mrs. Schiavo is distressing to personal rights.

This is a lesson that everyone should have a living will proclaiming their intent that they don't want to kept alive in certain situations, otherwise the courts will kill them.

The Christian sects are not in agreeance over the Schiavo matter, the athiests however all believe that she should be kept alive because there is no afterlife.

The Schiavo rulings do not dole out cruel and unusual punishment, not eating is culturally normative in places like Sudan, and we shouldn't be prejudicial.

Gravatarnot eating is culturally normative in places like Sudan,

They didn't try Windex.

GravatarWhat a dog turd of a man.

GravatarI have to say, being a loyal Echaton reader, I am disappointed to see you give Hal Turner exposure on your site. He is a criminal, basically, and not worth the time.

GravatarCalling Hal Turner a Republican is one of the more stupid accusations that has been thrown around in this whole stupid Schiavo monstrosity

GravatarTurner goes to kidnap Schiavo, changes his mind, and kills himself for interfering with his own kidnap attempt?

GravatarIsn't it ironic?

Why is Brother Paul described as a monk? He is a brother, not a priest nor a monk. What is the difference?

If Terri can't swallow, how can she receive the Host and wine in Holy Communion?

What does Brother Paul mean when he urges people to "take action? Are his words in contradiction of his role as a "Franciscan Brother of Peace"?

Paul O’Donnell, a Roman Catholic Franciscan monk, said the family unsuccessfully urged Michael Schiavo to allow his wife the sacrament of communion during the holiest day of the Catholic year. She received last rites the day the feeding tube was pulled.

“This is in violation of her religious rights and freedoms and allows the governor to ... intervene,” O’Donnell said Saturday, repeating the family’s request that the governor take Schiavo into protective custody. “We beg you to have courage and take action.”
