I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

GravatarGannon Update: Mystery Solved...

GravatarPlus he is a hack of the first pressing.

GravatarFRIST!!!!

also, ive been following this. in all reality, despite the fact that he is WAY low on the evil totem pole.

He kinda needs to be fired. if the SCLM had any credibility, he'd be gone. But, again, our current society allows for him to yell "muligan" and keep his job.

also, HOLY SHIT im the first person to "really" comment here, never had that happen.

Gravatarto give a DNA sample to a creepy New Yorker named Bo Dietl

I wonder if his aim is good enough to hit Bo in the eyes?

GravatarWhat would Morrie do?

GravatarI'm a fan of his columns. He did a great obituary of his friend Warren Zevon. In our zeal to focus on media buffoonery, I think we might have an innocent man here. Take the cuffs off Mitch. Let him go.

GravatarHow is what Albom did that much different from writing an obituary before a person dies (which is common practice)? I'm not sure I know enough of the details to say that Albom didn't do anything wrong, but I haven't assumed that what he did was entirely out of bounds unless he never had any intentions of revising what he wrote before it went out to print.

GravatarI wonder if his aim is good enough to hit Bo in the eyes?

One could only hope.

GravatarThe difference is between writing and submitting for publication.

GravatarI doh't have that much of a problem with it. Remember when Louis Lapham got into a bit of a thing last year when he commented on RNC speeches he hadn't yet heard?

This is waht happens when you write to deadline. It was a dumb mistake in both cases, but not lethal.

GravatarA little wit and wisdum from our One True Leader:

"We look forward to analyzing and working with legislation that will make—it would hope—put a free press's mind at ease that you're not being denied information you shouldn't see." —Washington, D.C., April 14, 2005

A moron couldn't have said it better.

Gravatarthehim, I agree. Albom both got away with what he did and got picked on for what he did because he writes treacly crap bestsellers.

It's his editor who should be fired. Jesus Christ, we have these people in place to reign in this sort of crap, and they just let it all go.

I'm not a fan of Albom's but I'm even less of a fan of the editors who let this happen and are now tossing him out there. Their names won't become national punchlines.

A.

GravatarThe difference is between writing and submitting for publication.

I see. That's just laziness then.

GravatarI'm not going to comment since I've resented him ever since reading his awful book. I will say that Tuesdays with Morrie was the worst book I read that year.

Lapham, I'm inclined to give him some slack since he puts out the best magazine in the United States and was the one who suggested "Nickled and Dimed", the best book I read that year, to B.E.

GravatarThe fundies want a mulligan on the 60s.

GravatarThey're gonna have to change the name from "Free Press" to "Free Pass".

GravatarThe important question is, of course, will John Saunders let Albom back on the ESPN's The Sports Reporters on Sunday mornings?

GravatarJeebus help me, the OT stuff is too good today.

While he's still alive and could reasonably have her killed, one of Osama Bin Laden's former mistresses, the much maligned Sudanese-American novelist, feminist supporter of Israel and undercover Super Agent for the SPLA, Kola Boof, is releasing a scathing tell all book that reveals his freaky sexual habits, his gift for writing poetry, his hatred for Sadaam Hussein, his plot to kill Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, his obsession with the B-52 song "Rock Lobster" and his love for all things Sudanese. Kola Boof's autobiography, "Diary of a Lost Girl" (ISBN: 0971201986), hits America in August 2005.

W? T? F? OBL, a B-52s fan?

GravatarI don't know anything abpout this guy, but releasing columns before an event is pretty common, imo. How many times have the blogs pointed out artciles about the SoTTU address before it's delivered? Happens all the time...

GravatarFrom the thread below. Best answer to are we winning yet? in days.

Not yet. But we've finished losing.
GWPDA, Irate Scholar

I bow sir/madam to your scholariness!

Gravatarto give a DNA sample to a creepy New Yorker named Bo Dietl

Will this involved a Johnny Pump?

GravatarW? T? F? OBL, a B-52s fan?

I'm not surprised. Their music makes me want to kill people too.

GravatarThe important question is, of course, will John Saunders let Albom back on the ESPN's The Sports Reporters on Sunday mornings?

I'll let him back on...but only if they get rid of the insufferable Lupica!

GravatarWill this involved a Johnny Pump?

Sadly, yes. But only because Bo Dietl's contract specifically prohibits him from drawing blood from his guests, for any reason.

GravatarI think that this is a little unfair, he had a crazyy deadline -- friday night - for a Saturday game. No one on the copy desk caught this? Please! The only reason Mitch is being hung out to dry is becuse his editors let it go and then were embarassed. Whoever read that column on the desk should be fired.

GravatarI'll let him back on...but only if they get rid of the insufferable Lupica!

Back in the days when the Knicks could still win ball games (heh), Lupica's columns were great. As Ewing's fortunes slid, so did Lupica's.

Not to mention that kissing up to that decrepit bastard Imus must have driven him stupid.

GravatarI was exposed to The Captain and Tenniel yesterday and by the end of today I'm going to go postal against anyone I see in a sailor's cap.

I won't say in hopes of sparing you.

GravatarNot yet. But we've finished losing.
GWPDA, Irate Scholar

You're so right. Now that many people are fighting back, we are finished losing.

GravatarI was exposed to The Captain and Tenniel yesterday

Thanks so much for implanting a loop of 'Muskrat Love' in my brain.

Although it did replace the 'Rock Lobster' loop that was playing previously.

GravatarI'm not surprised. Their music makes me want to kill people too.

GravatarI'll let him back on...but only if they get rid of the insufferable Lupica!

Lupica and Albom need to engage in a high-speed "shame-off" to decide which one gets to stay. Topics to include steroids, college players getting paid, and the obscenity that is public stadium funding. Go!

But I like Bob Ryan, warts and all, so I can't throw stones.

GravatarLupica,

now there is a fine candidate for a good old fashioned Tripping.

GravatarWell, if OBL is a B-52's fan, he's listening to a lot of sodomite music, I hope he knows that.

How long until we get the contents of *his* iPod?

GravatarReminds me of Steve Martin in the movie "LA Story". Prerecords the weather forecast so he can go on vacation.

GravatarAh soup's done. (cajun spiced chicken pasta)

GravatarAll of this blather about his faking (another) column, but not a word about him being one of the first to scab during the Detroit newspaper strike? In the words of one of not-Morrie's other heroes, "Instant Karma's gonna get you ..."

GravatarOh, no it wasn't that one. I wonder if listening to Etta James will get it out of my head. Or maybe Dusty Springfield singing "The Look of Love,". Yeah, always thing of Ursula and David Nivin when I think of that one.

I'll let you know if it works.

Gravatarstop picking on my pal mitch. we all make mistakes.

GravatarWho is Albom?

GravatarUrsula Andress, to give full credit.

Mike Barnicle, don't get me started. Oh, C&T are gone. It must have been thinking about M.B. I guess pure hatred can drive out 70s pop music.

Gravatarbo dietl -- bernie kerik minus the intellectual heft.

GravatarThe Free Press says We took into account many factors, including the seriousness of the offense, the importance of our credibility, the history of those involved and Albom's 20 stellar years at the Free Press.

Apparently their credibility doesn't rank very high on their importance scale.

GravatarWho is Albom?
Hedley Lamarr - 2:30 pm

a treacly, hack poundit and notorious scab at the Detroit Free Press...

btw i like the little inadvertency of 'poundit'...

Gravatarpoundit is good. Have you ever heard one you wouldn't like to?

GravatarKola Boof, is, unfortunately, a hoax.

Gravatarbo dietl -- bernie kerik minus the intellectual heft.

OUCH!!

But accurate...

GravatarThe important question is, of course, will John Saunders let Albom back on the ESPN's The Sports Reporters on Sunday mornings?

That's supposed to be the "grown-up" show, yet you don't see fabulists like Albom and crazy people like Bob "I just wanna smack Joumana Kidd" Ryan on Around The Horn.

Gravatarjust out of curiosity, doesn anyone know what Albom's political preferences are? I realize it shouldn't matter, but because I'm an assholw and I suspect he may be a liberal, I'm inclined to be lenient towards him.

GravatarIt'll be interesting to see the others who get implicated in this Albom mess - it's fairly well known that editors can't touch his stuff, it has to go in as is. So those above who singled out editors, take note.

Gravatarre: Albom's Politics
i doubt he has the wit or the intellect to craft a personal politics...from what i can gather, he'd like to be thought of as 'liberal,' but he's just an opportunistic, quasi-centrist meliorator, not unlike Jerry Springer or JoMentum Lie-berman...

I wouldn't want to be associated with him politically...what an empty vessel...
.

GravatarI know he criticized Bush for the inaugural spending and the GOP for Schiavo. A google search shows freepers and other conservatives particularly hate his radio show. I wasn't aware of his past scab. Don't know if Atrios is trying to win credibility points here by criticizing somebody who is percieved to be on the left.
Here's a sample:

http://www.americanthinker.com/ a...article_id=3784
Albom’s mission on his radio program, despite its being a variety show of sorts, seems to be to counter the three hours of what he endlessly labels “Hate Radio,” known to the rest of us as the Rush Limbaugh show. Albom hides behind a requisite claim of objectivity in every utterance and every debate regarding politics and current affairs. Nonetheless, one is hard-pressed to recall an instance in which Albom has ever had anything decent to say about President George W. Bush. Indeed, when the President recently visited Turkey and mentioned the success of NBA champion Detroit Piston Mehmet Okur of Turkey, the President had some trouble with the pronunciation. Albom kept himself in stitches by playing the President’s gaffe over and over again.

GravatarAlbom's radio show offers a welcome counterbalance to Limbaugh and Hannity in Detroit's WJR lineup.

I believe Albom is a centrist, but since the right wing nut claim anyone not with them is a "liberal", well, he is a welcome antidote to their dribble.

Gravatar25 years from now, this recent Albom scandal will either

a) be totally forgotten or
b) be the ONLY thing people remember about him.

No middle ground.

Gravatarthehim said:

"How is what Albom did that much different from writing an obituary before a person dies (which is common practice)?"

Seriously, you don't see any difference between the two? He wrote an article using details that hadn't happened yet and, as it turned, out, WERE NOT ACCURATE!

When someone writes an obit, they use actual FACTS about the deceased. Albom made up stuff and got caught. Really, you don't see the difference here?

Gravatar"What would Morrie do?"
the bitter Dr. Pedant

-Morrie would fire him.

GravatarOkay, I'm going to come down on the side of "it was a mistake."

This is a FAR cry from what Gannon/Guckert did, what Coulter, Hannity, Limbaugh, and a crap-ton of other people do.

Granted, it wasn't accurate, and as a freelance journalist, I cringed when I heard about his transgression. But still, he mis-reported window dressing. Let's repeat this--window dressing. And for some reason, the copy editors let it go.

Please note that there has been no news of the copy editors in this fiasco...

Also, when he was called on the issue, he actually admitted he was guilty and apologized, unlike so many other notable journalists that have been taken to task on Eschaton.

Finally, for heaven's sake, he's a sportswriter. At the risk of offending people, how important is a sports column? Somehow, I think it's slightly less important than, say, headlines and the actual news stories.

I say forget it. You can call Albom a hack and say his writing stinks if it'll make you feel any better, but why not direct that anger at someone who is doing something really bad?

GravatarBob,

He clearly made a mistake, and that's a good point. My understanding was that he wrote that certain players were in attendance and that they never showed up. The problem was not that he wrote it early, though, it was that it wasn't revised before it went to press. From what it looks like though, Albom was certainly a big part of this screwup.

GravatarSo, shall we discipline every reporter who files a story about a presidential speech based on the advance copy instead of wht the presidnet actually said?
