GravatarEasy for you to say. I haven't been first in weeks.

Ah, but while you are not literally first, QL, you are figurative first in the hearts of all Eschatonians.

(Res obviously punchy from outlining.)

GravatarI was first!!! I was first!!
I'll go nuklear on you.
I'm so mean my shadow runs from me.

GravatarOh, FUCK Frist by any means imaginable. This dead-eyed miscreant needs to get bitch-slapped, hard and soon.

Sorry - I just get so angry.

Gravatarooops. That should have been "constitutional".
oh well

GravatarThat [the "nuclear option"] would require a two-thirds vote, far from a certainty in the Senate.

Two-thirds, folks. 67 Senators. The R's only have 55.

Where are they gonna find 12 additional votes???

Somehow, I don't think Senator Reid will allow any buckling in his ranks. Jeffords will also say "no".

Frist's going to get fisted over this. He can only hope to try to spin his ineveitable loss as a "moral victory". Think it'll play with the Rapturites?

GravatarGoing out to Mulla First and the rest of his ass-sucking buttbuddies:

GravatarSince everything Bush says is backwards (ie NCLB, etc), is the constitutional option really unconstitutional?

I seem to recall that it could be argued that it would take 60 votes to eliminate the filibuster. That seems to have gone down the memory hole.

GravatarFrist's going to get fisted over this. He can only hope to try to spin his ineveitable loss as a "moral victory". Think it'll play with the Rapturites?

On SciFi Channel:

7 PM ET: Mansquto
9 PM ET: Parasite
11 PM ET: Skeeter

Bad Movie Buffs Unite!

GravatarI hope the networks put Cat Killa Frist all over their lame-o news shows tomorrow PM. I hope he's ranting and that there's video of people speaking in tongues all over the place.

GravatarBDM,

A terrifying lineup indeed. Yikes!

The Sad thing is that I have seen them all.

I'll have to see what TCM or HBO have to offer.

GravatarWelcome to a new kind of tension.

Well spoken.

Gravatarwho owns the rights to Mr. Smith Goes To Washington?

I think Frist must really hate boy rangers and wants that dam so bad he's willing to lie on the Senate Floor.

Bill Frist/Claude Rains. worth a shot.

GravatarI hope the networks put Cat Killa Frist all over their lame-o news shows tomorrow PM. I hope he's ranting and that there's video of people speaking in tongues all over the place.

I might even tune in if there is video. Unfortunatly I think it's gonna get "sanatized," although there should be people speaking out about the Cat Killa siding with the American Talliban.

GravatarTwo-thirds, folks. 67 Senators. The R's only have 55.

Huh? This is the first time I've heard it needed a supermajority. I'm fairly certain the rethugs need 50 votes + Defib Dick.

.

GravatarI'll have to see what TCM or HBO have to offer.

I know "Is Paris Burning?" is on about 10 PM ET. I mean . . . how can that compete?

GravatarOf course, most of our intreped press corp keep saying, incorrectly, that the Dems are going to "shut down the government" if the reThugs go Nucular*.

The Dems said they would halt all but the most important legislation. The Thugs then claim the obstructionist Dems are going TO SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT.

Liars.

GravatarThis dead-eyed miscreant needs to get bitch-slapped, hard and soon.

I honestly think that Cat Killa Frist can't get elected prez. He is just too damned ugly (literally and figuratively). And he's giving up his senate seat.

So kitties ... watch out! Cat Killa Frist will be back on the loose shortly!

GravatarTCM has Out of the Past and Is Paris Burning tonight.

Mitchum is great in the former.

I'm gonna catch "Out of the Past" tomorrow night. That is one of the greats.

GravatarHuh? This is the first time I've heard it needed a supermajority. I'm fairly certain the rethugs need 50 votes + Defib Dick.

Per the NYT article this morning, that's what Dick thinks, too.

I say: "Bring it on." Cheney is his own worst enemy.

Gravatarthrice, at the very least.

Sarah, Dear,

unfortunately it is likely the maximum number of times you could get away with it.

GravatarSomeone should ask republicans what they think of George Orwell.

Honey child ... you give the average Repuke too much credit. You ask them that question and they'll say, "Is he a CEO or something?"

GravatarThe nuclear option was intended to be based on a simple majority. That was why they were going to use it. I hope they don't. Even George Will told them they would rue the day they did that.

GravatarI honestly don't think the senate will even try the nucular option. They just buy into the tough guy act. I hope they do try. Then when the Dems take over, those insane clown Rethugs can enjoy their bitter medicine with that whine.

GravatarHere's the story on where 67 came from (12/13/04 WaPo):

At issue is a seldom-used, complicated and highly controversial parliamentary maneuver in which Republicans could seek a ruling from the chamber's presiding officer, presumably Vice President Cheney, that filibusters against judicial nominees are unconstitutional. Under this procedure, it would take only a simple majority or 51 votes to uphold the ruling -- far easier for the 55-member GOP majority to get than the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster or the 67 votes needed to change the rules under normal procedures.

GravatarI say: "Bring it on." Cheney is his own worst enemy.

RMJ ... One of my friends always says, "I won't be happy until I see that motherfucking grabbing his left arm."

BTW ... Is this why you left family law? Last case of family law ... H&W K w/surrogate. Donated egg. Donated sperm. Baby. H&W divorce. Neither wanted custody. Both said, "Not my kid, b/c no biological ties."

GravatarRIL - My wife asked me how old was the baby, and how long had they had custody?

GravatarSpork, here's the ref for the need of a super-majority to change the filibuster rule...

From PBS Newshour, April 15. Mr. Shields says:

"...the library of congress came out and said they need two-thirds of the senate to change the rules. Otherwise, the place just becomes chaos and you can change the rules every other day with a shifting majority..." (Link).

It's also stated in one of Atrios' pull quotes in the post (Houston Chronicle, 12/24/2004).

GravatarI'd like to give Frist & Company "nuclear" suppositories.

GravatarActually this is the first time I've heard of the "constitutional option".

Man am I behind on my doublespeak.

GravatarBDM,

Just read up on is Paris burning, sounds very interesting, better than the menacing ant movie on sci-fi right now.

Fortunately it appears to be approaching its denoument.

Gravatarbigvic - Sounds like a constitutional question to me, on if they have the authority to change the filibuster rule on a simple majority vote. Would be interesting what the SC would think or do if faced with the question.

GravatarBDM,

Saw it many years ago, one of the clasics.

GravatarMasterD & chris/tx -

Thanks.

If the Rethugs do need 67 then it's dead.

It's also stated in one of Atrios' pull quotes in the post (Houston Chronicle, 12/24/2004).

However, in an Associated Press-AOL poll conducted last Monday through Wednesday, 58 percent of Americans said they have reduced the amount of driving they do as a result of recent increases in energy prices. The telephone survey of 1,000 adults had a sampling error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Calabrese acknowledges he has only anecdotal evidence, but says a 1.5 percent passenger increase in 2003 and 3.7 percent last year supports his claim. It's only the second back-to-back increase in 25 years -- the last one in 1996-97 was the result of a new rail line.

GravatarTo Mary's post - I'm extremely fortunate that I found a place to live that's literally two traffic lights from work (approx. 1 mile). I've been walking to work for the last month or so. Additional fortune - a woman that I work with drives right past my place, so I can grab a ride home if the weather's off.

I've driven my car (maybe) 10 miles in the last month. There are a couple stores next to my place and I just bought a bike, so I should be keeping my scrap of the sky clean for a while.

Stating up front that I'm neither a lawyer nor Constitutional expert, I don't think the Supremes would even hear the case. They'd likely consider it a matter of the Senate setting it's own rules (IIRC, filibusters aren't mentioned in the Constitution).

But I may be all wet.

.

GravatarI'm wondering what phrases they tested on the focus groups before deciding on "Constitutional option."

Counter-intuitional?

GravatarRepublicans therefore favor using majority rule to change the filibuster rule, but Democrats contend that this would be improper and perhaps unconstitutional. By labeling such a change "the nuclear option," Republicans appear to concede that any majoritarian amendment would be an unprecedented threat to the harmony of the Senate.

That "harmony of the senate" is a quaint line. Hahahahaha. Go for it boys and girls.

Gravatarpatriotboy - Started reading your links and got pissed off. Those fuckers just ignore that R's did away with the blue slip tradition like it never existed. If we still had the blue slip in place, probably no need for the filibuster on judicial nominees. Case closed.

I still can't get over the "choice between the Constitution and the people's business" line the Repubs are throwing around. I don't even understand what they're trying to say. I think it's just a nice-sounding tagline - gibberish that incites emotion on the Right....

"We shouldn't have to choose between babies and families!"

GravatarI don't think the Supremes would even hear the case.

Echidne of the snakes

You've got that right. And as long as there is an electorate with a collective median IQ of subterranean levels, the Rove machine and its broadcast friends will rewrite all the history books.

GravatarThe filibuster isn't in the Constitution; it's a Senate rule.

I believe that the trick here is that a change in Senate rules requires a two-thirds vote.

They're going to play a typical Republican trick and change this rule by using a point of order to change the rule. A point of order requires only a majority.

The whole thing is ridiculous, because the Constitution makes no distinction between advise and consent on judicial nominations and executive nominations.

GravatarOT - the Rat Pope, NYT

April 24, 2005

Turbulence on Campus in 60's Hardened Views of Future Pope

By DANIEL J. WAKIN

This article was reported by Richard Bernstein, Daniel J. Wakin and Mark Landler, and was written by Mr. Bernstein and Mr. Wakin.

TÜBINGEN, Germany, April 23 - For all Pope Benedict XVI's decades as a Vatican insider, it may have been the crucible of a university town swept by student radicalism in the late 1960's that definitively shaped the man who now leads the Roman Catholic Church.

During his Bavarian childhood under the Nazis, Joseph Ratzinger became convinced that the moral authority based in Catholic teachings was the sole reliable bulwark against human barbarism, according to friends, associates, and his biographer, John L. Allen Jr.

But while his deep reading and thinking in theology, philosophy, and history were fundamental to development as a theologian, it was the protests of student radicals at Tübingen University - in which he saw an echo of the Nazi totalitarianism he loathed - that seem to have pushed him definitively toward deep conservatism and insistence on unquestioned obedience to the authority of Rome.

etc

-----------

My bold, but the byline seems to indicate some actual reporting going on, but the Brits have a head start. and I'm not sure these reporters caught the irony of aversion to totalitarianism vs "insistence on unquestioned obedience to the authority of Rome" in the same sentence. But, may be so.

There are none so blind
as will Nazi.

GravatarOh, Mary - let me tell ya, it's nearly addicting. If I actually had anything to say, I'd probably make a podcast every day.

Frankly, I'd rather make a podcast than talk to people on the phone. It's like having a conversation and running your own soundtrack in the background. And you don't have to listen to the other person! What could be better?

Gravatarhiya charley! Long time no see!

GravatarI am sure it has been asked before, but why is Bolton so damned important to basically rig the process with Lugar. It was so transparent that if you can get joe six pack to sit and watch, he will likely draw the same conclusion. Why fight so hard for this bozo and risk the bad exposure? Tell me this isn't a matter of principle. The principle should be of course putting the right person into the role regardless of party affiliation.

GravatarStranger,

Heh. Here we go with the squito thing again.

GravatarFuck. Rove is trial ballooning a recess appointment of Bolton - first shill is O'Bierne (?) on Capitalist Gang.

GravatarYo, charles! How's things on your end?

GravatarRip,
Well, my thing's a no-brainer for podcasting. To talk about a new band, or the history, or whatever--it's a lot easier to illustrate it than to try to explain it.

I love your Michelle Malkin thing, BTW.

GravatarEk,
Bolton is Caligula's horse. They're doing it to see if they can.

GravatarHere's a question for you all. My brother-in-law is 28, 29 in a few months. He is dating a 19-year old girl. She graduated from High School last year.
Is this sick or is it ok? I think it's a little weird to think that when he was going into the Navy, she was 8, but maybe I am just too hard on him? His parents think it's just fine.
What do you all think???

GravatarI think Bolton needs to be paid back for all his lunacy done for the sake of the Bushies. Cheney and he are tight. Maybe to the level of BFF. But he is getting his just deserts for being such a good sport.
What's throwing a few tape dispensers and staplers between friends anyway???

I used to know of a treehouse in Sarasota, but many moons ago. Requires adjustment to the possum and the spider, not to mention the mosquito.

GravatarMalba

It depends on what was going on, how long did they know each other, did he date here early on?

That age difference is not so great. There is 11 years diff between the wife and myself, she is senior, got her hooks in me when I was 21, married two years later.

GravatarMary, I noticed that, too. I think it's the way I'm ripping the mp3 for the intro song. Changing the mp3 file-name afterward doesn't seem to do anything.

It's a learning thing....

GravatarI didn't mention that he only just last week left his parents basement, does that surprise anyone???

GravatarRipely,

Listening to your podcast even as I type. Don't even get me started on Humvees. I go OFF everytime I see some asswipe with a military fantasy hard-on driving one of those hulking embarrassments.

GravatarMalba--what would your brother see in a girl so young? That's just wrong. Sorry, I know what 18 and 19 year olds sound like, and it's not remotely adult except in a few situations.

Gravatarmalba,

Again, depends on what was going on, is he considered immature, irresponsible, or did he build a career, etc, etc. Is he a basement dwelling troll like those who visit here, totally dependent on parents for financial support, did he not contribute to the household. Yeah it can sound bad, the real trick is knowing what was going on with him at the time.

GravatarRip's podcast on Ann Coulter is pretty funny. "These activist judges and their restraining orders...." funny stuff.

Gravatarwhat would your brother see in a girl so young?

Uh, mmm, uh (poking it with a stick), mmm, Nah...

GravatarSally,

I guess she is really cute, but she is sooooo young.
What can an 19 year old have in common with a 29 year old??

It seems to me I have met many couples in which the husband is much older. Is that considered unusual now? I have had flack because of the reversal. Would be no probs if I was the elder.

Well, when the wives are much younger, they tend not to be first marriages for the men, ergo trophy wives.

The other way, as you note, is much more unusual. Though I have a boy toy myself--though not that dramatically.

GravatarHe did not give his parents money to live there. (They gave him money) He did not clean, mow the lawn nor scrape the lime deposit off the shower for 6 years. (They had to chisel it off)
He works at a convenient store as a clerk and is attending the local junior college. He has been fired from every job he ever had.
So he is immature, but shouldn't we be encouraging him to act like an adult rather than telling him it's ok to attend prom with a high school girl?

GravatarWe liberals need to setup militant right to life organizations around the country and start using them to storm hospices and hospitals around the country looking for violations of "culture of life" principles all in the name of W.

We also need fetus and brain dead life support property tax levy proposals in every county. Every wingnut Bush supporter in my neighborhood has signs out right now to defeat a school levy.

Lets unleash the fanaticism of the new GOP ahead of their schedule. It may help stop them in their tracks.

Gravatarmalba,
Well, it sounds like they're more equal than it first appeared. Poor girl.

GravatarEkCenTrik--where I live, it's frowned upon--kids are supposed to be friends and 'hang out' before becoming involved with one another, and that would limit them to a relatively narrow age range.

GravatarHe works at a convenient store as a clerk and is attending the local junior college. He has been fired from every job he ever had.

But what are his bad points?

GravatarThe courts wouldn't touch an issue that was an internal rule of the Senate. Separation of powers. Which is why Cheney should stay out too.

GravatarMalba--sounds as if he's not ready for a girlfriend.

Gravatarre the Power of Nightmares

never mind, it's tomorrow nite

I thought today was the 24th for some reason

GravatarI am my wife's trophy boytoy. yet when I was a 30 year old I had a 20 year old girlfriend. we both worked for the same newspaper. the relationship burned hot and fast. so what?

ageism sucks. but of course mileage varies, depending on one's state. so to speak.

GravatarI have no problem with older men and younger women when the younger woman is indeed a woman.
If they were to meet 10 years from now, no biggie, but they met now and she is a girl. He should be a man.

My hubby is four years younger than I am too. We have been married for 10 years and have 2 children, but we met when both of us were in our late 20's.

GravatarDear Iran,

We'd like you to stop doing whateverthehellitis you do over there and be more like Ayatollah Jerry or Pat "Miracle Man" Roberts. So, please stop doing it now. We don't want to attack you unless Halliburton tells us to, but.... (yes, Iran, those were vaguely threatening elipses you saw there.)

Most Truly Yours,
America

P.S. Laura sends hugs

P.P.S. Jenna sends hugs, too

P.P.S. Seriously, can we have your nukular stuff or do we need to go through that whole "check with the U.N. and the rest of the world" business again?

GravatarEkCenTrik--congrats to you and your wife! I think once past the threshold of adulthood, age becomes less relevant, but for most kids of 19, it's very much so. Very few of them can hold adult conversations, forget about adult responsibilities.

GravatarStrange, strange, strange.

As a bit of veracity check here, let it be noted our 25th will be later this year.

Now, I have met a few who married wives much younger than 10 years, but for a few specific circumstances, I have raised an eyebrow, starting with a parental unit's journey down that road.

(Basically, me inherit anything, are you kidding?)

GravatarThough I have a boy toy myself--though not that dramatically.

To quote Will Smith:

"I gotta get me one of those!"

Seriously!

Gravataremd,

Is that all the fillibuster is -- an internal rule of the Senate? I admit to being phenomonally ignorant in this area. Well, the Republicans won't be in power for ever and one day they may regret this.

I thought Roll Call was reporting that they'd decided to back off since the measure was so unpopular and since they'd done so poorly w/ the Schiavo thing?

I keep telling my mother to spend everything and leave everyone $5, and there won't be any arguing.

Gravatarmalba, 19 is perfectly legal, right? If you have a hint that this guy is no good, that's one thing. if not, how can it be our business? besides, if I remember correctly, that young sweetie broke my heart, not I hers.

GravatarS Ty--glad to hear it's tomorrow night; I'd hate for anything to screw up Monster Night on SciFi.

GravatarThough I have a boy toy myself--though not that dramatically.

Ok, but it's Your job to feed him and take him for walks and clean up after him. We're not going to help you with this, ok?

That's a big girl, you're... oh hell! look, he just ruined my favorite golf shoes!!!!

MARRRRRY!!!!!

GravatarVery few of them can hold adult conversations, forget about adult responsibilities.
Sallyh

Sally, my daughter is 23 and she gets SO disgusted with kids her age.

Her British boyfriend is 10 years her senior.

This is a kid who was in the hospital with a bad asthma attack (ICU for the first couple of days) and was very upset because she couldn't get out of the hospital to vote on November 2.

And boy, does she hate Bush!

GravatarMalba, sounds to me like the issue is not age, but inherent maturity then.

GravatarUh, mmm, uh (poking it with a stick), mmm, Nah...

.

Gravatarmalba they are going to do what they want to.
Just be handy when she falls in a year or two

GravatarJust saw McLaughlin group. Everyone used the term "nuclear option".

GravatarHecate - I raised the question upthread, and nobody would touch it (well, spork said he doubted it).
chris/tx

Remember when every respected lawyer in this country said the Supreme Ct. (dominated by "state's rights" losers) said the same thing about Bush v Gore?

I put nothing beneath the insane clown posse we have in the repug party.

GravatarWell, with these clowns, how can we be sure they are discussing the filibuster and not a pre-emptive attack? Must make folks in some countries a bit paranoid until someone explains it to them.

GravatarHecate,

this article at FindLaw talks about the constitutionality vs. likeliness of courts getting involved

http://writ.news.findlaw.com/dean/20050408.html

GravatarTerry--I agree. My kid can hold adult conversations on the issues, and she's very nuanced that way, but it sounds as if yours is emotionally far more mature than mine. I'm guessing that her sentences do not contain 'like' every other word.

GravatarEmail Evidence Worsens for Bolton

April 24, 2005
E-Mail Exchanges Reveal More Bolton Battles
By DOUGLAS JEHL

WASHINGTON, April 23 - Recently declassified e-mail messages provide new details of the bruising battle that John R. Bolton, then an under secretary of state, waged with analysts at the State Department and the Central Intelligence Agency in 2002 as he sought to deliver a speech reflecting a hard-line view of Cuba and its possible efforts to acquire biological weapons.

The messages, provided to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, are surfacing during a firestorm over Mr. Bolton's nomination as ambassador to the United Nations. Democrats and some Republicans have raised concerns about Mr. Bolton's temperament and tactics, and have called particular attention to his harsh treatment of intelligence analysts, suggesting that it may have amounted to political interference.

The declassified e-mail messages suggest animosity between Mr. Bolton and his staff on the one hand, and intelligence analysts on the other, at levels even greater than have emerged from recent public testimony by Mr. Bolton and others. A Congressional official provided some of the messages to The New York Times, saying they should be made available to the public because they had been declassified.

GravatarMy son is five years younger than his wife. She's a fantastic person and they're wonderful together. I don't know -- anytime two people can find a little happiness, it's a good thing. IMHO.

GravatarPutin has a clear position on the Iranian nuclear option:

"Our position on nuclear non-proliferation is consistent and strict - we are categorically against proliferation of nuclear weapons and categorically against any kind of military nuclear programmes in Iran," the president said.

He went on to say that the programme was being monitored by the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), and that agreements had been amended "to make sure that our partners are not using this cooperation for military purposes".

But he also stressed the need to respect Iran's right to develop peaceful modern technology and to safeguard "their scientific and economic interests".

"Iran must not feel itself discriminated insofar as modern scientific achievements and technologies are concerned," he said.

GravatarTerry--mine cried when the results were in. She so hates Bush. She had to prepare a 'resentments list' as a step project, and Bush was pretty close to the top. She, too, is frustrated by many of her age cohorts.

Gravatarronjazz,

It's not anyone business, but I don't think it's quite right and I wanted others opinion.
It's not like I am going to tell them they're messed up or anything. Sometimes you just need a sounding board to bounce things off. I know I am usually right. But it's nice to hear others as right as myself.

GravatarOn McLaughlin Group, Eleanor Clift said Bolton migh squeak through with a 9-9 vote out of the SFRC and then with 51 votes in the Senate. If he is voted down in the committee, she said Bush may do a recess appt, which will be good through the end of 06.
This is just macho politics now, the participants said. So a recess appt is likely, unless Dems dig up something really really terrible in
the next couple of wks.

GravatarHere's a question for you all. My brother-in-law is 28, 29 in a few months. He is dating a 19-year old girl.

In general, I think that sort of age difference makes less difference as both parties get older, i.e, if he was 39 and she 29 most people probably wouldn't bat an eyelash.

GravatarI know I am usually right.

Yeah, me too, but can you come tell my wife that?

Event Supporting Tim Kaine, Democratic Candidate for Governor in VA

I really hope that you will consider attending this awesome upcoming
fundraiser for the hottest and most important regional political
race in 2005, supported by many leaders of the area labor movement.
Besides the desire to keep Virginia out of Republican hands, Tim
Kaine has throughout his career demonstrated a strong commitment
supporting young people, women, and working families.

We have a goal of raising $5,000 dollars and could really use your
help. If you are not able to attend the event on Wednesday, May 4th,
2005 at VIDA (1120 20th St., NW) (especially those folks from out of town), it would be
great if you would consider making a donation to this important race
nevertheless [please RSVP if you can attend at
http://www.dcene.com/rsvp.html or email me if you are able to
donate].

Finally, it would also be extremely helpful if you would consider
mass-forwarding this email to friends/lists you are on.

Many thanks in advance,

GravatarIf any of y'all remember my request for the source of the Goering quote a few months back (for my niece's 6th grade essay responses about "Could Hitler have been stopped if...?")...

The kid got something like a 98 on the paper. I'll get her to send it to me and I'll post it. When a 13-year old is writing about how people can be herded by their leaders through fear and misinformation, somehow it's impossible to miss today's parallels, even though the kid doesn't point them out.

GravatarEkC,

I admire you for choosing (both of you) an older woman. Too many shallow dudes out there would would let a little thing like age get in the way of their manly pride of not bagging the young airhead with big tits.

GravatarWell, there is a 13 year difference between Bob and Liddy Dole, and a 34 year difference between Liddy and Strom.

bigvicsquito-That assumes there are no older female airheads with big tits. No true. In fact I know a few who have tenure.

Gravatarcharley,

Aaaiiiieeee! Not the Hummer again! Every idiot I see driving a Humvee looks like a fat old skin head. And not a damned one of them can drive that thing in city traffic. It's like watching Mr. McGoo (sp?) plowing helter skelter through a near catastrophe.

GravatarI guess she is really cute, but she is sooooo young.
What can an 19 year old have in common with a 29 year old??

Sex?

GravatarI'm also married to a younger man;5+ years difference. I was more hung up on it than he was.
Malba's problem, I don't know what to say. Sounds like he's immature and a 19 year old is about his speed.

GravatarAs one of the more crassly outspoken of my friends said of my 7 years younger boyfriend years ago, "young, dumb, and full of cum."

Crude, but not completely off target, since she got 2 out of 3 correct - he was no dummy.

I preferred the only somewhat less crude observation that 24 will go into 31 more times than 31 will go into 24.

My niece and one other girl put up their hands.

So instead the teacher read, "The Five People You Meet in Heaven."

Sigh.

But, as I told a friend, apparently some of our children is learning. I'm super proud of her ability to see through bullshit - and do take partial credit for it too!

GravatarOh, and--I saw literally hundreds of people wearing buttons and stickers that said, "Make music, not war."

GravatarRipley - Didn't you know?

They have "Left Behind" books for kids now. Illustrated versions. In the storyline, some bad kids who disobeyed their parents get "left behind", while their parents, good solid Sam's Wholesale religion types, get Raptured.

The kiddos have to face life and fend for themselves under the rule of the Anti-Christ.

I'm not making this up.

Big bad Bob Mitchum. Kinda sexy in a scary way. And a pot smoker.

So much for the youthful indiscretions crowd.

GravatarGWPDA somebody finally said it.

The other day, while I was buying my tree at the nursery around the corner, which has been there since 1946, owned by the same family, the current matriarch (who was born on the property) and I were talking. Her daughter-in-law chimed in, and Mrs. Nursery, turned and said, 'No, you're wrong.' You could see the little DIL seething, and she finally said, 'You mean, 'You must be mistaken.' ' Mrs. Nursery and I looked at each other, Mrs. Nursery said, 'Dear, you're not in Philadelphia any more.' 'No,' said I, interfering vigorously 'Mrs. Nursery is, as am I, a blunt-spoken Westerner. We say you're wrong, when you're wrong.' The DIL flushed bright red, off she went, muttering about rudeness....

This is it, gang. The blunt-spoken West. We tell you when you're wrong, and we mean it.

{{{run away, run away...}}}

GravatarIn fact, that brings a whole new slant on that phrase:

"Just wait till your father comes home!"

GravatarGeneral,

"Genuine Cubans" is Christian code for tobacco not from Cuba, rolled by not Cubans, grown by staunch anticommunists ex-Cubans. "genuine" is the new Platinum. better than gold, not as good as Centurion Black.

genuine. newspeak genuine tastes better than the older genuine. and smokes well too.

GravatarI just put up with watching the Salon ad so I could read Juan Cole's article on the new McCarthyism. He's excellent, as usual.

GravatarYour gonna just hit and run, General, sir!?

I had Seder at my inlaw's earlier. There has never been a worse *cook* than my MIL. Canned carrots, asparagas, chicken that was boiled, then baked, then microwaved. The hard boiled eggs were not bad, though.

Gravatar"chicken that was boiled, then baked, then microwaved."

What did that chicken ever do to your MIL?

GravatarThere has never been a worse *cook* than my MIL.

bigvic - I feel for ya, I have been blessed to be surrounded by some of the best cooks in the world. Everyone I have ever brought home or to family gatherings wants to be adopted.

PS - How's your mother recovering from the stroke?

GravatarIronically, in the middle of the Salon article which is slamming the NY Times, there is an ad for home delivery of the NY Times.

Gravatar"chicken that was boiled, then baked, then microwaved."

Ah, chicken Rasputin.

.

GravatarEkC,

The question is, what the hell did we ever do to her to deserve choking on that utterly dead chicken? Did I mention the nutrasweet flavored jello with canned fruit in it? Yum!

GravatarBigvic--I'm sorry your food was miserable. I've had the privilege of attending the occasional Seder, and each time, the food was lovely.

Gravatarbigvicsquito-that sounds just like grandma used to make. Mine also would boil and then roast the chicken, however microwaves had not yet been invented.

GravatarFirst they boiled the chickens, and I said nothing....

GravatarThey may not be able to get away with this:

``Is it the sense of the Senate that the debate shall be

And if that question shall be decided in the affirmative
by three-fifths of the Senators duly chosen and sworn--

which case the necessary affirmative vote shall be two-

The humanity of it all.

Actually I could imagine the taste.

Damn, that even left an imaginary aftertaste.

GravatarI'm so jealous of anybody who got to go to the Jazzfest.

GravatarEvening, rational people. I see Sallyh made it home safely (as did I). Today's lunch with Sally, Prior A and his friend was absolutely amazing.

GravatarSallyh,

My kids keep begging me to have it cause the food is insanely bad. First of all, only my husband is Jewish (Atheist, actually) and second, I have 30 or more people for Thanksgiving, Xmas, etc. and don't need another bash. We must suffer this in silence. But thanks for caring.

GravatarLast minutes of "No Way Out' on TCM. Robert Mitchum....

In my TZ it is "out of the Past" on TCM,

also with Mitchumly goodness.

GravatarWomen marry younger men for the same reason that you often find beautiful women with total losers.

GravatarBatshit Bobo says Mother Nature likes you being fat.

Put this guy away!
Big Daddy Mars, 7:23

How much dya think they pay him to write such obvious garbage?

At one point in the essay he comments that the universe is basically crooked.

Excuse me?

And then he makes a snarky remark about people who actually read legal documents before signing them.

That's when I stopped reading the essay.

GravatarAhh, but Senate Rule 22 is exactly that with which they are trying to dispense. The procedure they wish to employ involves calling on the Parliamentarian to decide as to whether that Rule is Constitutional (hence, the newspeak term "Constitutional Option"), at which point he would declare that it is (unconstitutional). The Senate would then vote as to their agreement with this decision, which requires only a simple majority to stand, and Cheney would be the tie-breaking vote, if such were the case.

Gravatarbigvic ...
I had an aunt who was not so much a terrible cook as a terribly bland one. She definitely believed in quantity over quality. She felt sorry for me b/c I lived alone and would force me to take home huge care packages. Resistance was futile. So I'd tell her to load me up with as much as I could carry and then I'd walk through the subways distributing it all to the homeless. That way, everyone was happy.

GravatarKarin--as an academic myself, I find the incidents with Prof. Massad chilling. Even worse is the frequency with which these events are occurring.

GravatarDiane--what's the word on your friend? How is she doing?

Gravatar"What can an 19 year old have in common with a 29 year old??"
Miles Davis - Coltrane - Dostoevsky - a love of really amazing sex -
just saying...

GravatarThe Constitution says the Senate makes its own rules, so XXII can't be "unconstitutional".

But my god, people! It's a choice between the Constitution and the people's business!!!!! or whatever... fuckin freep-speak... yeesh..

GravatarPS - How's your mother recovering from the stroke?
chris/tx

Sweet of you to ask. She's out of the hospital and is doing very well. Thank god she didn't have seder dinner with us or my report might not be so good.

GravatarBTW, Diane is completely lovely and delightful, and I had the great pleasure of meeting her today!

GravatarRes Ipsa Loquitor

Admit it, there was at least one homeless guy asking if you remembered to bring the pepper this trip.

I have a MIL like that, good cook, but with age, seasoning is sparse.

GravatarIf we're still talking about it, I was almost 22 when Mr. Left Rev. and I got married, and he was almost 39.

My parents freaked a little. But, almost fifteen years later, and three beautiful daughters ahead, it seems to be working.

I told my parent they can stop freaking out now, so my Dad took a deep breath and bought a Harley.

That being said, I don't think this sort of situation would work for many folks, and maturity and compatability play some huge roles.

Now...nuclear options...

Seems really stupid unless you plan to be in power forever.

Just sayin.

Gravatarbigvicsquito-one bad meal won't kill the kids. My best story is when we were invited to my ex-sister in law's for Thanksgiving. When we got there, she hadn't cooked at all. She ordered Chinese takeout, and asked us to chip in!

GravatarAdmit it, there was at least one homeless guy asking if you remembered to bring the pepper this trip.

EkCenTrik ... There was one homeless woman who, when I offered her something said, "I am a vegetarian and I won't eat that." I don't remember what it was, but I thought (uncharitably), "Well, I guess beggars can be choosers."

GravatarWomen marry younger men for the same reason that you often find beautiful women with total losers.

WTF?

GravatarHas anyone ever had chocolate covered matzoh? Delicious.

Gravatar"chicken that was boiled, then baked, then microwaved."

Ah, chicken Rasputin.
Jay Carolina

BWA HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW!

Now THAT is goddam funny!

"Chicken Rasputin". May I steal that phrase? That's a keeper.

GravatarSallyh,

She's home from the hospital, but still too tired for an evening of dinner and a movie. We've delayed the night out to next Saturday. Fine by me. I like spreading out the good times.

GravatarThat was some delicious frames on TCM just now, Mitchum bracing Greer (?).

GravatarIt would seem Bobo has once again proven that he is utterly incapable of reading scientific papers. His conclusions are not at all what the paper purports.

GravatarHas anyone ever had chocolate covered matzoh? Delicious

Sallyh-believe it or not, I just came home today with a case of matzoh. The supermarket was giving them away to anybody who spent $50. All recipes gratefully accepted.

GravatarYOu know, I hope that new CNN guy, Klein, falls right on his ass. I hope CNN's (Time Warner's) stock price keeps crapping. They deserve the worst for what they've allowed that network to become. They need total humiliation.

GravatarBigvic--glad your mom's okay, and Diane, happy to hear that the good times are still yet to come.

GravatarFunny food stories, all.

Dianne, Sallyh,

What can you tell us of The good Prior? He is so interesting to type with.

GravatarHi y'all. I'm home blogging since I'm snowed in. Is anyone familiar with 'War is a Racket' by the late Gen. Smedley Butler? It's a good read if you're interested in the highlights:

http://greatscat.blogspot.com/20...-is- racket.html

GravatarKarin--I found these in the Passover section at Ralphs, and they're pretty tasty. Of course, you're not hungry for hours, which is the net effect of matzoh, seeing as it likes to settle

GravatarDiane,

Where did you take the good Prior for lunch? I was in San Diego the other week and had great meals at George's on the Cove.

GravatarAh, and there was an additional bit to our lunch today. John, Prior A's college roommate presented Sally and I with tee-shirts.

It had the Linux critter on it and the caption was "Kill Bill." I plan to wear it tomorrow when I go into the office to clean up my desk a little.

GravatarNow we're talking about Seder. Drat this dial-up.

I attended a first night vegetarian seder last year. Drop down dead and writhe with gustatory joy time.

GravatarCompletely, tragically off-topic:

Mitchum bracing Greer
Mitchum bracing Greer
Mitchum bracing Greer
Mitchum bracing Greer

I really like the way that sounds.

Mitchum bracing Greer

.

Gravatar"Chicken Rasputin". May I steal that phrase? That's a keeper.
MisterX

Happy to oblige. Take and recycle mercilessly.

GravatarOdd trick of time, for my age cohort 19 and 29 seem to be about the same age. Know I used to see it differently though.

GravatarHecate--the Prior says Marie Callender's is a tradition with him and John, and also that Episcopalians love tradition. So Marie's it was. Lovely potato cheese soup and spinach salad!

GravatarHecate,

They went to George's yesterday for the Prior's birthday celebration. Sally and I met them in Temecula at the Marie Callender's, a compromise on the drive time.

GravatarI had one female relative married to a man 20 yrs younger and another female rel married to a man 30 yrs older. Both had better marriages than I did married to a man only 8 mos older than me. We had too much in common.

And now you will probably get a new thread, because that usually happens anytime I comment.

GravatarThe good prior is a complete delight. He's got a great sense of humor, vast knowledge, and loves wrestling.

GravatarWhere they heck are you snowed in, des? It's April 23rd, right? Geez.

GravatarJay Carolina--somehow, you'd think Chicken Rasputin would be a little bit tastier than boiled-baked-microwave. Maybe a little absinthe added for flavor.

Now, I think the recipe used by Bigvic's MIL could be safely called Chicken Laura.

GravatarYOu know, I hope that new CNN guy, Klein, falls right on his ass.

Same here. Schmucks. They are no different than the Today show.

Karin, what kind of matzo did you get? Matzo meal is great for making soup. That I can help you with.

GravatarI'm so jealous of anybody who got to go to the Jazzfest.
Karin

One of the perks about living in New Orleans. There are an equal number of downsides. But today was a good day. One of the partners at my firm is a Rotary, so he roped me into working at the Rotary booth (they sell beer and soda with the proceeds going to a children's hospital). It truly was a fun day. Free ticket and parking, great spot right by the biggest stage, terrific music, cool breeze blowing, free beer, shade, and, (this is the best part as anyone who has been to Jazzfest will attest), our own Port-a-potty!

Best music moment--Irma Thomas devoted a song to all the women going through menopause, and the men who are living with them. If you ever get the chance to come, don't pass it up.

I'm jealous that sallyh, diane, and prior A got to meet!

GravatarOh kentsquito, No way Out, Out of the Past - prepositions, prepositions, anyway you put them together they spell Robert Mitchum!

GravatarI really like the way that sounds.

Mitchum bracing Greer

Channeling Andrew Vachss.

And it's great to see, a tiny bit shy of belly close, offset two ways, limned faces getting an intensifying white gestalt between them.

Man alive.

GravatarHappy to oblige. Take and recycle mercilessly.

Thanks! My wife an I constantly add to the Menu of the Imaginary Diner (that we're gonna open when we retire).

When we worked as waitstaff in a large hotel, I asked a co-worker what the special dish was that day. She, busy with other chores, responded "Chicken Ala La-La", and dismissed me with a wave of her hand.

We've been building a menu of like items ever since...

Gravatarhey 19
no we can't talk at all...

GravatarDroping dead and then writhing in gustatory joy had some unsettling conotations to it for me, it being the Easter season and all. And my kids are currently obsessed with zombie flicks.

Gotta go with Mitchum bracing Greer.

Littlest one needs a cuddle. I'll pop by later and talk to myself a while.

GravatarDiane and Sallyh,

Sounds wonderful. I am still remembering the hillsides-full of nastutiums I saw in San Diego! Such a beautiful place! And meeting the Prior sounds like quite an experience!

GravatarJay C,

I think we have a new name for the utterly dead chicken meal. Rasputin it is.

Peace.

GravatarChanneling Andrew Vachss.

Man alive.

Ooh. "A Flash of White"...

GravatarThere it is agian with Kirk Douglas this time!

GravatarTJ,

If you had shade at jazzfest, you hit the jackpot! (And the music sounds wonderful, too.)

GravatarThere it is agian with Kirk Douglas this time!

Just barely missing the chin!

GravatarThey look like the good and bad angels.

I'm diggin this flick like I'd been smoking something.

Oh, that's right . . .

GravatarWhere they heck are you snowed in, des? It's April 23rd, right? Geez.

Good ol MI. We've had an ice/rain combo all day. They say up to a foot of snow. It was 80 just a couple days ago.

Gravatarbigvicsquito-just plain matzo.

TJ-I've been to Jazzfest 4 or 5 times, but not in the past decade. I was about to ask you if Irma was there, because I know she's usually at the main stage the 1st weekend, and the Neville's the 2nd weekend.
Best music festival ever.
Everyone should go at least once in their lifetime.

GravatarGWPDA I.S.

So we are watching the same movie, and yours does not have Costner in it.

GravatarYEE-HAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH
I’m a Repulican
Gonna grab up all I can.

I’m a Republican.

Every day I go to work
Love me up my Preznit Smirk
Every day I toil and sweat
Runnin me up some considerable debt

Don’t matter none, don’t hurt me at all
Cause I have heard the angels call
Got to get me all that’s mine
As I heed the Party Line.

I’m a Republican
Gonna grab up all I can

Fuck my neighbor, fuck ‘em hard
He ain’t nothin’ but a liberal retard
His life’s my bizness now, you see
Cause I’m the heart of Liberty.

I pray loud all night and day
That I get everything my way
My God’s better ‘cause he’s best
And surpasses every test

I’m a Republican
Gonna grab up all I can

Every word my Preznit speaks
Falls like pearls from sweet doves’ beaks.
Those who say he cheats and lies
Are those who I know to despise.

Cause I’m a Republican
Gonna grab up all I can

I love the babies yet unborn
Yet hold the living up to scorn
Those who want their lives to end
Can’t get here from there, my friend.

Those who seek to wipe clean the slate
Of separation of church and state
Look to me to help the cause
And give the Founding Fathers pause.

I’m a Republican.

etc.

GravatarWhy is the General deliberatly antagonizing the little green spatulas? He knows they can't deal with conflict.

GravatarAnd meeting the Prior sounds like quite an experience!
Hecate

It was that. Haloscan apparently disapproved my last post, but Sallyh nailed the good Prior.

He not only likes professional wrestling, he knows all the main characters from the last 40 years.

When we left the restaurant, he demonstrated the Hindu push-ups and Hindu squats I had been kidding him about.

This is a great time of year to visit SoCal, especially since we've had so much rain. I'm a bit of desert rat, and the desert blooming this year was spectacular.

GravatarOh Oh Oh

GravatarJust stopped by to say that Atrios is a liar.

GravatarI've been away a couple of days...has anyone else had a problem loading Eschaton? When I put the address in, I get directed to the Blogger start page...weird.

GravatarPHILA!
CLEAR YOUR CACHE.

Thank you.

Back to Out of No Way to Tomorrow Back.

GravatarMan that lady wasn't very nice to Robert.

.

GravatarThanks, GWPDA!

Gravatarbigvicsquito-that sounds just like grandma used to make. Mine also would boil and then roast the chicken, however microwaves had not yet been invented.
Karin - 9:09 pm

Why on earth would anyone boil and bake a chicken??????

Why go to so much work to destroy a meal? Surely there are easier ways?

GravatarBack to Out of No Way to Tomorrow Back.

.

Gravatardes ... Sorry about the snow. That is harsh. It's monsooning here at the moment, but that's nothing.

Gravatarrain. I'm a bit of desert rat, and the desert blooming this year was spectacular.
Diane

I am also Diane. Check out my home page and tell me what you think of the bottom photo.

GravatarQuinnLaBelle - underdone poultry will kill you. Best to be certain.

Remember Tena's story about the chicken up in Colorado? Well....

GravatarIt worked...except that I still can't access this post without going to the Archives. Consarn it.

GravatarKarin--

Irma is writing her autobiography, which is going to include a section of letters from fans describing their favorite Irma moment. I'll let you know when it comes out. She said it would be sometime this year. She's so awesome.

Gravatar
Why go to so much work to destroy a meal? Surely there are easier ways?

.

GravatarBlue Dragon, is your big dog going to eat your little dog?

GravatarIt's monsooning here at the moment, but that's nothing.

LOL! Well you keep those hatches battened anyways.

Question: is 'Hecate' also 'Hectate' or are they 2 different peoples? Just trying to keep up.

Gravatarlol, no. The small one had just been brought from the pound and big dog was not all that sure of it.

Gravatarbut Sallyh nailed the good Prior.

He not only likes professional wrestling, he knows all the main characters from the last 40 years.

I'm not one to take things out of context but....

Sally, you hussy(hen) !!

Gravatardes - 'Hecate' and 'Hectate' are literally acres apart. Hectares, at least.

GravatarMeeting Mr. WWF was a great experience, but meeting Diane was wonderful, too. She is a spirited and lovely person.

GravatarAnd everyone! Check out TJ's blog!

GravatarMitchum fans should check out a bio by a guy named Lee Server, called "Baby I Don't Care"- he was one of a kind.

At the bookstore, I was flipping through the picture section & came to a pic of Mitch with a cup of coffee in a jail cell (the pot bust)-- caption read, "note the fine-grained cordovans" (shoes, that is)

I thought, 'this is the book for me' and beelined for the checkout...

GravatarGood one GWPDA

GravatarRipley! Moi?

GravatarI'm just done watching

Gravatar"Speaking of, I asked my friend why he was divorcing his wife, a former Miss Arkansas.

He said, "Well, it started on our wedding night when she asked her maid-of-honor to join us in a threesome."

And this is a problem how?

My wife is 8 years older then me. I didn't want some young chickie my second time around. Women get much better with age.

GravatarBlue dragon, get the dog some shoes.

GravatarI've run out of starch.

It's Saturday night and I've run out of starch.

GravatarGoddam Haloscan--let me try again and save it

GravatarRained all last night and into this morning. Turned to snow at about 3 pm. We got about 3" now and are promised 6. Cleveland.

Gravatardes - 'Hecate' and 'Hectate' are literally acres apart. Hectares, at least.

Thanks GWPDA. That's solved, and I won't worry about figuring out Ted and his brother Ted, and his other brother Ted.

GravatarCheck out my home page and tell me what you think of the bottom photo.
Blue Dragon

Oh, my! Arizona? New Mexico?

That's an incredible shot, Blue Dragon.

GravatarGWPDA--how are you ever going to get those sheets done without starch?

GravatarThanks, sally! I'm really fascinated by this link between Bill Gates and the Discovery Institute. I plan on researching it some more tomorrow.

Did you see I had a troll? I take that as a good sign.

GravatarAnd Blue Dragon - I'm always amused by the cat people worrying about how to introduce a new cat into the household. Dog people do it your way. Old Dog - this is New Dog. Don't eat him. And we walk away....

GravatarSally, of course you know that I kid... me, being a kidder and all... The way I read that post, though... wahoo!

Now that we're sufficeiently off topic, can I whore my podcast? Hell, I'll whore it anyway - this is America, right?

PodSquito

Yes, I'm a whore. But at least I don't vote Republican.
.

GravatarWomen get much better with age.

He's right. We do.

GravatarTJ--I confess I ignore trolls for the most part. It's just not that cute.

GravatarAnd everyone! Check out TJ's blog!

sallyh

blogpimp of great renown.

.

GravatarRipley--but of course

Actually, as Diane can tell you, I'm not all that daring

GravatarDiane it is near the border of Az and Utah.
It could be either one

GravatarKentsquito--TJ's blog is immensely worth pimping.

GravatarTJ--I confess I ignore trolls for the most part. It's just not that cute.

Oh, I ignored my troll. Just like I ignore the ones around here. Once you get the hang of it, it's easy just to skip right by their comments and continue with a great conversation. Rather like talking with a good friend over coffee while one's toddlers are bouncing to and fro, interrupting and making lots of noise.

GravatarI'm just done watching Out of the Past, and what a masterpiece on every level, even plot holes; unlike most movies featuring double and triple crosses, OotP has few.

I can't believe this was a B movie; the lighting and cinematography are the equal of anything contrived by the notoriously profligate Sternberg at Paramount. If anything the movie is too arty, with coronast bouncing off the actors' faces with improbable precision and shadows falling at angles to please Pythagorus.

There must be some movie site with a "cigarette count," and OotP would have to be in the top ten. 3/4 of the characters with speaking roles smoke virtually non-stop. I like the scene where Mitchum, nervous after disposing of a murder victim's body, grabs the cabbie's cig.

No HTML for me this time--feh on Haloscan, and feh on Atrios for not switching

GravatarTJ--but at least toddlers have some charm, whereas trolls don't.

GravatarRather like talking with a good friend over coffee while one's toddlers are bouncing to and fro, interrupting and making lots of noise.
TJ

I love that metaphor!!

GravatarDraco--ever watch '200 Cigarettes'?

Gravatarmagnolia, you just would not belive how much that dog loves the snow.
If I can find it, I have a photo of her swimming in a stream that is 7000 ft. up and snow on the banks.

GravatarSallyh - I'm sprinkling.

It's, it's hard work, sprinkling. It's not the same, really. I may give up and switch to pressing knits.

Maybe a few chapters of Ronald Storrs. It's a sad life.

GravatarGWPDA--do you use spray starch or do you do it the old fashioned way? (Do they even sell laundry starch like they had when I was little?)

GravatarI seriously do believe that women get a lot more bullshit in youth about what they should do, and should be, and should think: it takes us years to unlearn it. Most women don't hit their stride until well into their twenties, frequently not until 30.

GravatarActually, as Diane can tell you, I'm not all that daring
Sallyh

Blink.
Blink.

Sally has a very soft voice.

I don't know that she is not all that daring. In fact, the conversation at lunch would seem to belie that.

It was a very good lunch.

Gravatar"Is Paris Burning" starting on TCM

(wonders why he has never heard about this film)

.

GravatarNYMary-totally. Even better when you hit 40; you truly have the confidence to say, I don't have time for this.

GravatarThanks for the review, Draco. Now they've got Jean-Paul Belmondo coming up on TCM, "Is Paris Burning?"

GravatarHey,

Anyone hear from Otter today?

Gravatarsallyh,

you are right of course.

.

Gravatarkentsquito - we agreed that we would tell you about it when you were ready.

GravatarKentsquito--I was forced to give up "Parasite" on SciFi to see 'Is Paris Burning?' per Monsieur.

Ah, the things I do for l'amour!

GravatarDiane is great. She exudes this marvelous energy and has a great no-BS aura all about her.

GravatarEvening all.

Sallyh:
Glad you and Diane had a good time with the prior. Did you find some scotch for him?

GravatarIf you get stopped by a cop in Amsterdam, it's illegal for them to search you. I'm fuckin goin.

GravatarDiane is great. She exudes this marvelous energy and has a great no-BS aura all about her.
Sallyh, La Poissoniere

Thanks, Sally. Actually, it's what happens when you're almost 59. Life just gets better and better.

Like I am wont to say: never mess with an old woman. We don't fight fair because we don't have to.

GravatarI was forced to give up "Parasite" on SciFi to see 'Is Paris Burning?' per Monsieur.

The burden of love

Having already seen the balance of tonights Sci-Fi lineup, I am deciding on something new.

GWPDA,

Out of the loop again?!?! You guys will let me know when I am ready? Right?

.

GravatarGWPDA--do you use spray starch or do you do it the old fashioned way? (Do they even sell laundry starch like they had when I was little?)

Did you know that one of the oldest historically preserved houses in Tucson is 'painted' inside with bluing? Laundry bluing. Nice and cheerful.

Of course I use spray starch - heavy, heavy duty spray starch. This is what was so confusing to me the first few months I had Arthur, for he smelled exactly like Niagara spray starch and I thought it was the overspray. Turned out, it wasn't. Yes, laundry starch is still sold, right next to the bluing, but no, my days of boiling starch passed sometime about 1962. That was much the same time that my mother discovered the wonders of 50/50 content sheets and the sheet ironing ritual disappeared from my household. I've brought it back because I'm mad and because it is the last single element of sheer (oh, look at the doggie with his stick!) pleasure producing housewifery I indulge in. I just love the way those heavy, starched percale sheets feel - and I'm prepared to waste an hour or so a week for the indulgence....

GravatarIf you get stopped by a cop in Amsterdam, it's illegal for them to search you. I'm fuckin goin

Amsterdam is one of my favorite places in the world, always made it my connecting hub. Go to "the Bulldog".

SallyH - I spent a week in Temecula years ago doing some training, for some reason can't remember much about the terrain other than cactus and some hilly areas. How would you describe it?

GravatarKarin--I've seen Is Paris Burning, and it has serious problems; it's one of those international co-production thrown together in committee, with no clear vision either from the writers or director.

I much recommend the book however. My favorite character from the book is missing in the movie. He was US GI named Kelly who spent his whole life trying to get to Paris as a dream. He was one of the first to reach the city, having met a French girlfriend, only to be shot by a retarded French patriot who'd been handed a gun by the ill-staffed resistance. The retard explained that he'd never seen such a vehicle as a jeep, and assumed it must be German. Kelly, dying in hospital, bore him no malice, and became a hero in France.

AAlso absent is Ernest Hemingway, who contrived to sneak into Paris as a journalist, didn't quite make it until later, then wrote a dishonest self-glorifying account of himself.

Read the book.

GravatarFlory--I was unable to come up with some single malt on short notice, but I will be providing a care package to the prior in the near future (with a homebaked treat to accompany that single malt).

GravatarMost women don't hit their stride until well into their twenties, frequently not until 30.

Very true. I have never wanted to be younger than I am at any given moment. Maybe I'll feel differently when I'm 65, but for now, it's all good.

GravatarGWPDA--I understand how you feel about ironing sheets; I feel that way about cooking. I don't always have time to make bread, but I love the feel of kneading bread, and the finished product is always very satisfying.

GravatarWhy are all these clowns linking to Brad Plumer. I went over there and the mother-fucker is 22. WTF? He had a post arguing there was no economic reason to give health care to the poor, only a moral reason. I see all the Phd's and slightly older and more qualified people over here and I have to wonder how it is Plumer ends up getting all this attention. I'm not impressed.

GravatarChris TX--right now, there's still some green in the hills, although they're definitely starting to dry out. No spring flowers; I think I missed the bloom. (Poppy season was about a month ago.) Unfortunately, there are a lot of generic shopping plazas lining the edges of the 15 these days, and BigBoxRetail housing tracts. Also, it's FundoidLand out there.

Sad, isn't it?

Gravatarwith all due respect, those "selected" places supposedly so good for children etc are not, necessarily, Depends on who wields the yardstick, does it not, and what you want your children to experience and learn.

Also depends on what one is able to provide.

Not everyone has the professional jobs or the wages. Some must make do.

That's where we stand and fight.

IMHO.

GravatarWho IS Brad Plumer, anyway?

GravatarWhy are all these clowns linking to Brad Plumer.

Who are these clowns and who is this Plumer?

.

GravatarBy the way, the book Is Paris Burning? is non-fiction, told by a variety of anecdotes. I shouldn't have called Kelly a "character"; he was real.

One of the funniest things in the book is how much the German commanders in Paris hated war. They had pricy mistresses, box seats at the opera, a percentage in the black market and apartment or houses with scenic views. The last thing they wanted was for war to ruin their lifestyle.

GravatarDraco-And of course Robert Capa was there too. Remember those great photos of the liberation of Paris?

GravatarLiberals, you are all delusional. Your way is at an end. YOu are all clinging to a life raft of dead ideology. America is not with you AT ALL. Note that when Jane Fonda was spit on by a vet recently at a book signing, 2/3 of the emails to the local paper were in support of this action, and called the man who did this a hero. As do I. Fonda was a traitor and deserves far worse than spit, yet the liberals whine. America is for this beahvour, it is heroic. Those who ared against it are weak, sissifyed and biased. Amen. Glad that a real rain has come to wash all the scum off the streets.

GravatarSarah--living in a supposedly 'kid-friendly' place was never a huge priority of ours. We were more concerned about access to zoos, museums, funky shopping areas, good restaurants and other nonsense. We also felt the energy and diversity of the city were great for kids, and I think we were right about that.

I have a hypothesis that the cities are reported to be less dangerous than purported and that the burbs are more so. Needless to say, it hasn't gone beyond that stage.

Gravatar" Most women don't hit their stride until well into their twenties, frequently not until 30."

Oh yeah, definately over 30. It just seems to me at some point around that age or older, a lot of women get much more frank...less games, less bullshit, more confidence. Seen it all and heard it all. Much more genuine and interesting, imo.

Gravatarironing sheets.

One needs time to do that, eh?

huh.

GravatarSally - I just remember Temecula being more than I expected, but sounds like it has lost what charm it had. Actually, we had our best time heading down to San Diego after finishing early on a Friday. Loved the zoo and the restaurants on the yacht basin.

GravatarWho are these clowns and who is this Plumer?
Drum, Delong, Yglesias.

GravatarDraco,

Flaws aside, I am enjoying the '60's '40's, the international cast.

Of course I have always had a weakness for the French Resistance.

.

GravatarI think the reason women of a certain age acquire the "I don't have time for this shit" attitude is because they truly don't have time for it.

GravatarThere is no ideal age in life and there is no such thing as happiness.

Gravatar"I think the reason women of a certain age acquire the "I don't have time for this shit" attitude is because they truly don't have time for it."

So you're saying if they had more time to indulge in it they would out of preference? Here I thought all that crap just got very old and stupid.

GravatarSallyh,

Many, many people do not have the luxury of deciding where to live, never mind places that would be "children-friendly".

This sort of POV just makes me tired.

Frankly,it's too fucking precious.

SD

GravatarMost women don't hit their stride until well into their twenties, frequently not until 30

And some are childish little brats their whole lives.

Same as some men.

I am happier with my 20 something GF than the crazy immature 40 someting woman I fell "in love" and lived with, or the, well I could go on.

I depends on the individual people, and how they are, not so much their ages.

.

Gravatarsallyh,

it would appear that I owe you a coke.

Joe,

Thanks

.

GravatarSarah--I live in a lower middle class neighborhood and have for 18 years. It was all we could afford, and we decided that it was silly to move to a more expensive (read: less racially mixed) area.

What I find obscene is how housing prices are beyond impossible in CA, and that includes rents. To hear of people spending over 50 percent of their take home on housing is common here. I find it alarming.

GravatarGWPDA, want to come and iron my sheets?

And I agree with the idea that getting older lets women become more themselves. Less worry about who might be hurt by whatever we say or do, partly at least because experience teaches us that we are not that powerful in the first place. The social dogma does imply that we are awfully powerful in certain spheres (like with children) and totally powerless in some others, and both these ideas are false. It's quite liberating to find that out.

GravatarJoe Citizen--cool! Thanks for the coke!

GravatarHow are my fellow Salieris tonight?

GravatarEchidne--my daughter keeps saying she can't wait till she's 40, so that she won't care about what anyone says about her or thinks of her. I told her she could get an early start if she wanted.

She's 19. You couldn't pay me enough to be 19 again.

GravatarOrson Wells, A Swedish Diplomat, Who knew.

GravatarIf all those Texas joints are so nice why is housing costs in Manhattan the highest in America? Even the slums in Manhattan are higher.

Geeze, my son in law's condo on 72nd on the East Side is over half a million and it is the size of my kitchen!

GravatarIn terms of meeting Diane, I get the feeling that if you need her help, you'll get all you need and then some, graciously given. Just don't waste her time.

GravatarSallyh,

I would have expected such a response from you, and it is nonetheless welcome.

I just weary of the wealthy among us (and I am okay, though not anywhere NEAR the top)talking about stuff that most of the world couldn't begin to comprehend.

So many haven't got a clue re: remodeling, for example - and, honestly - it is remote concept for us, me and my husband. It is interesting to me, for example, to learn about hardwood floors, but...it's a very distant concept for us, who are probably stuck with our sandalwood-colored carpet for eternity. What a curse!!! What the Hell did I do in a former life to deserve this...Never mind.

I live in a low-income n'hood, and these people are great. Much nicer than the totally qhite 'hood I might live in were I so inclined and able to afford.

Frankly, I just get goddamned tored of the blindness of the white/privileged lens.

Though I do recognize that I am far less likely to find that here, among Eschatonians, than elsewhere. It's why I come here - and you are one of the ones I learn from, daily.

Thanks for that.

SD

GravatarI have a hypothesis that the cities are reported to be less dangerous than purported and that the burbs are more so. Needless to say, it hasn't gone beyond that stage.
Sallyh, La Poissoniere

I feel comfortable leaving my doors unlocked at night and when I'm gone in this Texas subdivision.

Would have never done that in the city of Albuquerque, where I lived within the city limits for 10+ yrs.

.

GravatarSarah--I agree. Got the best neighbors in the world. i plan to retire here.

GravatarNote that when Jane Fonda was spit on by a vet recently at a book signing, 2/3 of the emails to the local paper were in support of this action, and called the man who did this a hero.

Translation: 2/3rds of America are ill-bred, ill-mannered trash.

No wonder the rest of the planet loathes us.

GravatarI guess this is OT since this isn't technically an Open Thread, though it has followed the usual pattern: the latest NToddcast.

GravatarYou couldn't pay me enough to be 19 again.
Sallyh, La Poissoniere

HAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

You got that right!!!!!

GravatarEvening Moonbats. Keeping the good fight?

GravatarWow. This is a nite for socializing. Just got back from the face to face type to the PJ socializing here.

Draco. You are so correct about "Is Paris Burning", the book.

Chris/tx,

I love Amsterdam. The bicycle is queen/king there and the folks are mellow plus. I speak so highly of it and so often that my kids are begging me to let them go to college there when they're old enough. Right. I'll print up some money and only see them during summer.

Peace

Gravataragave:
Colorado Springs, CO

Eeeewww. Ish.

Not as long as Spongedoob Stickypants calls it home.

Sallyh:
If you're staying with the Scots theme, you should bake the good prior something with oats.

GravatarNTodd--that's great, but do we have Saturday Samblogging?

GravatarI honestly think that Cat Killa Frist can't get elected prez. He is just too damned ugly (literally and figuratively). And he's giving up his senate seat. ...
Res Ipsa Loquitor

RIL,
Drove by the lot on Bowling Avenue here in Nashville where that Kreepy Kitty Kevorkian (™MWO) Frist is building a huuuuge house. Local rumor says the plans include quarters for the Secret Service.

GravatarFlory--I have a great shortbread recipe that contains oats and barley flour. Think that's Scottish enough?

GravatarNTodd--that's great, but do we have Saturday Samblogging?

Damn, I knew you were going to say that and was hoping I could get something posted beforehand...

GravatarNTodd, or whomever, pls explain to me the podcast process.

Many thanks, and aboriginally yours,

GravatarGoodnight and happy blogging to all you lovely people. I am sooooooo tired....

GravatarTranslation: 2/3rds of America are ill-bred, ill-mannered trash.

Fuck them. Ill mannered trash can congratulate themselves all they want. They will still be ill mannered trash.

GravatarLocal rumor says the plans include quarters for the Secret Service.

Cat Killa is being a tad presumptuous, isn't he?

He won't need the quarters. We are going to make dozens of commercials in which he says he doesn't know if AIDS is transmitted by tears and sweat, clips from his "Justice Sunday" appearance, and -- when he invokes his "nuclear option" -- branding him totally and wholly responsible.

He can become the local animal control officer and indulge his Cat Killa ways.

GravatarEvening, DWD.
To get on topic for a minute, "nuclear" or "nucular", as the case may be, sounds so much more exciting than "constitutional". I don't think they'll be able to get the MSM to give up that terminology.

GravatarTJ: nighty night.

OT, anyone seen this?

(It's a Periodic Table of Blogs. For some reason Kos and Bradford Delong make it on, but not the A-man. Gah!)

GravatarSD
Sarah Deere

I had the opposite experience in Albuquerque.
My neighbors were A culturally diverse array of Korean gang bangers, Cuban drug dealer, two of whom kicked the crap out of me, Spanish Crack addicts banging on my door in the middle of the nite cause they were confused about were the drug dealer lived. Chicanos draging their GFs down the street, or atleast attempting to. (Don't piss off a Spanish Girl. From experience with my GF)

Left the city not by choice, but because of my job. Scared the shit out of me, moving to TX, but it turned out wonderful. Fuck cities.

.

Gravatarbigvic - I stay at the Cok hotel on Vondelpark. Nice walk/jog in the morning, pastries across the street for breakfast, a trolley station a few feet from the entrance, and a bulldog coffee shop a couple stations down the tracks. Took my wife last time, and she liked Amsterdam much more than Paris even thought she does not partake in the delicacies.

On the particulars of your children, hell yeah. Tried to get my nephew to do the plunge, but too timid. Take them when they are teenagers, and it will be a trip they will never forget (or you).

GravatarBDM,
Bobo said it perfectly himself, as he gazed upon his reflection in the mirror, to wit (if I may quote the little putz): "The shallowest people end up blissfully happy and they are so vapid they don't even realize how vapid they are because vapidity is the only trait that comes with its own impermeable obliviousness system."

Sounds as if he looked into his own soul.

GravatarTemecula used to be pretty nice, but now it's getting over crowded and overbuilt. The new indian casinos have brought tons of dummies to the area. A few years ago it was nice to go there for the weekend and sample the wineries and relax, but now the crowds have ruined it.

GravatarOkay, should've RTFB a bit, apparently it's been all over Instapundit. I found the link thru the Guardian's Newsblog...

...actually whilst trawling to find which blogs have RSS feeds (Gmail now includes a sort of mini-aggregator so you can get "blog headlines" or news headlines whenever you log in). Anyone from Team PHAT here who could tell me where to find First Draft's RSS if it has one?

GravatarKarin--I've seen Is Paris Burning, and it has serious problems

On the other hand, there is one of my secret pleasures to watch (and hear), another black and white depiction of the same time - The Train, with Burt Lancaster and Jeanne Moreau.

I can hear the sound of the trains in the stations and yards, the hiss and drip of the steam engines. Fantastic.

Much more curt and clean a movie.

GravatarSarah Deere, Sallyh, Echidine:
Relating here.
But can't stay, must feed the troops.

GravatarHe can become the local animal control officer and indulge his Cat Killa ways.

He better not try that here! (Ssssssst! Rowwwwl!)

GravatarI have a great shortbread recipe that contains oats and barley flour. Think that's Scottish enough?

No sheep's stomach? Not Scottish enough...

GravatarBobo said it perfectly himself, as he gazed upon his reflection in the mirror, to wit (if I may quote the little putz): "The shallowest people end up blissfully happy and they are so vapid they don't even realize how vapid they are because vapidity is the only trait that comes with its own impermeable obliviousness system."

I may as well go now. Nothing else tonight is going to top that.

GravatarSallyh:
oats and barley flour

That would be a yes.

GravatarSarah,

I, too, am tired of constantly viewing the world through the lens of the priviledged. It is . . . tiresome.

My wife and I are really struggling to get little DWD through college now. No scholarships are available. No help from the college whatsoever. It is tiresome.

Apparently if you are rich, college costs are not that big of a deal. If you are poor, scholarships are available. If you are a teacher - fuck you and the horse you rode in on.

Sigh

GravatarTheaLogie,

I'm trying to multitask here, and not doing too well at it, but WTF is RTFB. Call me ignorant. Peace.

Gravatarchris/tx-

I visited the Bulldog 2 summers ago, such that I can remember.

Love those bike-friendly cities!

.

GravatarTo get on topic for a minute, "nuclear" or "nucular", as the case may be, sounds so much more exciting than "constitutional". I don't think they'll be able to get the MSM to give up that terminology.
Karin

True, hadn't thought of that.
How bout 'Constinuclear'?

It rolls off the tounge, but, well, not the same impact.

.

GravatarNTodd, or whomever, pls explain to me the podcast process.

Sarah Dear - first things first: the Wikipedia def'n of podcast.

Now all a podcast is, as Tena observed many threads ago, is an audio file (usually MP3 format, just like the music people download). I personally record a bit of music and do a verbal, extemporaneous cross between a blogpost and a radio show. Anyhoo, you can download the podcast file and listen to it on your PC or put it on your iPod (or other MP3 player) and listen to it in your car or whatever.

Bottom-line: it's the audio form of blogging, or an online version of guerilla radio.

Gravatar" Anyone from Team PHAT here who could tell me where to find First Draft's RSS if it has one?"

what the hell IS an RSS feed, and why would one want one?

GravatarOn the other hand, there is one of my secret pleasures to watch (and hear), another black and white depiction of the same time - The Train, with Burt Lancaster and Jeanne Moreau.

Yes! and then there's Closely Watched Trains

Gravatar#To get back on subject: When the Supreme Court decided George had to win over Gore, I wrote both of my senators asking them to never agree with this egregious act. If they had done so at the time, then the nuclear option would be moot: wouldn't it?

I wanted them to shut down the government until the situation was resolved fairly. They did not. Now we have these power hungry cretins ruing my country. So, nuclear of Constitutional: it is something the democrats SHOULD have done

GravatarChris,

Oh, I will. I envy you. You are making me green with envy. The kids have a carrot. Straight A's and B's and we take the next family vacation to Amsterdam. My daughter is in. The son, not. He got a C in his best subject--English lit. Go figure. Still have to figure out a way to print the money. Any suggestions would be a kindness.

GravatarWTF is RTFB

Read The Fucking Blog, akin to RTFM (Read The Fucking Manual)?

GravatarWas suprized to see Santa Fe, TX (NM?).

• Great people and neighbors
• Serenity, peace and quiet
• Beauty of area
• Great Schools
• Safety for children
. . .
agave | Email | Homepage | 04.23.05 - 10:25 pm

Yeah, I'm surprised too. I'm wondering who put that list together, because Santa Fe, TX is not what I would call a "pleasant" city. I grew up very close and Santa Fe enjoyed a reputation for first-class bigotry that I witnessed first hand. Cultured it is not.

GravatarI, too, am tired of constantly viewing the world through the lens of the priviledged. It is . . . tiresome.

It is boring. NYC has gotten very boring of late b/c it's become one giant outdoor mall for the nouveau riche. They bid up the price on everything and they are deadly dull to talk with. I wouldn't tempt fate by praying for a depression, but you have to think that one would flush some of the garbage out of this town so that artists, writers, and other cool people could afford to live here again. Then again, I could be dreaming.

Gravatar"Apparently if you are rich, college costs are not that big of a deal. If you are poor, scholarships are available. If you are a teacher - fuck you and the horse you rode in on."

Amen to that, DWD. And tuition remission if you're on faculty? A pleasant memory of yesteryear.

I have students in community college who can't qualify for financial aid but have to keep working two jobs in order to cover their college costs and living expenses. I think this is reprehensible. Nowadays, if I've got a kid sleeping in class, instead of thinking the person is lazy or disrespectful (as I might have at a younger age), my first thought is, My God, what time did he/she have to work till?

GravatarNo sheep's stomach? Not Scottish enough...

Apparantly, NTodd is very kindly donating his slice of shortbread to yours truly.

GravatarNTodd,

Thanks, I think. Heh heh heh.

Gravatar"I, too, am tired of constantly viewing the world through the lens of the priviledged. It is . . . tiresome."

Yeah. One night I'm watching one of those home improvement shows, and they're redoing a bathroom. These yuppy and his plastic trophy wife budgeted $100,000 to do the freaking bathroom.

Lsst year the paper here did a 'best Tv's for 4 grand' article. WTF is up with this shit? Are there really that many people out there that have 4k to send on a freaking teevee?

GravatarFlory--I noticed NTodd was not the least interested in shortbread.

Any predictions as to what the Sunday morning atrocities will consist of?

Gravatar"Any predictions as to what the Sunday morning atrocities will consist of?"

Lineup listed at Kos, top story. Guess what tim the cathoilic will be discussing?

Gravatar"These yuppy and his plastic trophy wife budgeted $100,000 to do the freaking bathroom."

I'd put my less than a grand self done kitchen up against any of the shit they put out. We actually made it a room that could be worked in and enjoyed.

GravatarRes Ipsa,
The artists have moved to Williamsburg, but that's also pretty dull, resembling, as it does, a huge dorm now. The stink of super-hip desperation is palpable.

GravatarSallyh, Diane and Prior: glad you had a nice visit. I am going to have to get down to Three Rivers this summer to meet Prior. California? Not in my plans, unfortunately.

GravatarJDW--hmm. Let me guess. little Timmy will be complaining that US Catholics won't follow the edicts of Benny the Rat. Awww.

GravatarWe demand clean sheets!

GravatarHappy Passover, everybody!

GravatarNYMary ...

BillyBurg is a bore, too, but for a different reason: Hipster saturation. Besides, those kids talk about the same shit as the nouveau riches,, i.e., what they bought, what they are buying, what they will buy (and how much it cost).

BORRRRR-INNGGGG.

Gravatar"I'd put my less than a grand self done kitchen up against any of the shit they put out. We actually made it a room that could be worked in and enjoyed."

I'm sure. But it seems to me that they show this shit to whip up business for 100,000 bathrooms or 4k teevee sets. And I just can't fathom that there are that many people who have the means for something so wasteful.

Then again, I'm freaking because mky 15 yo truck is apparently on its last legs and have no clue what I'm gonna do when she croaks. I was hoping to get at least 5 more years outta her.

Gravatarchris/tx,

Do they still have the "Festival Of Fools" in Amsterdam? The artsy farty mock show? What a hoot. Man, I love that city. Haarlem is great, too.

GravatarDWD--you'll completely enjoy the Prior. Get him going about wrestling. I think he barely scratched his wrestling stories today

Gravatar"JDW--hmm. Let me guess. little Timmy will be complaining that US Catholics won't follow the edicts of Benny the Rat. Awww."

Dingdingding. We have a winnah, and much white smoke!

GravatarJay Carolina - I went into the bulldog years ago, famished, and said let me have three of those brownies. The guy looked at me like I was an idiot... Anyway, great place, they even have a hotel now I think along the window shopping area.

bigvic - Seriously, opening your children's eyes to the world around them is one thing that can be priceless. After they have seen that there is a different world out there (the forbidden fruit), it can be like the dropping of a veil. Do a Rome/Paris/Amsterdam drive for two weeks with the family in early June, it will be a vacation you and your family will never forget. I did it with a buddy in the early 80's, boy how I would like to do that again.

GravatarYeah, I'm surprised too. I'm wondering who put that list together, because Santa Fe, TX is not what I would call a "pleasant" city. I grew up very close and Santa Fe enjoyed a reputation for first-class bigotry that I witnessed first hand. Cultured it is not.
Bushwick Bill

Well that clears that up.
I assumed it was a mistake, not knowing there was a Santa Fe, TX.

But, I still don't get it.
TX is supposed to be red necked and bigoted. I have not seen it. Is it just where I live? I look like an ageing hippy and all I get from these people here is friendlyness and respect. Are we holding on to what happened in the past? Even when I lived in Ohio in the 60's and 70's, bad shit happened. But it's not the same now.

.

GravatarMosquitos don't have emotions. They're simple creatures.

I thought you all should once again share in the literary glory that is Mansquito.

GravatarI love Williamsburg, actually. last time we visited a friend there, we saw three separate independent films being shot on his block alone. I am not in fact making this up.

Gravatarres - nymag had a cover story ode to the rich recently. the most astute observation of the impact of the rich taking over manhattan:

"There’s a broader effect on the texture of the city, as well. In many areas, the most economically efficient—frequently the only economically justifiable—use is wildly upscale housing. That’s why the Plaza Hotel, which charged dearly for its cramped, old-fashioned rooms, is being converted into premium condos. The profit potential is too powerful to ignore. Should we care? Well, yes. No matter their exorbitant markup on a cup of tea or a martini, great spaces like the Palm Court and the Oak Bar feel like part of the public domain. Soon they will vanish.

This is no isolated incident. Several years ago, hedge-fund billionaire Bruce Kovner bought the International Center of Photography, a mansion on 94th Street and Fifth Avenue, and is now using it as a residence. A proud constituent of Museum Mile, which used to hold fantastic exhibits, has been turned into a somnolent outpost of Billionaires’ Mile. The Town Club, a homey place on East 86th Street that made its facilities available to neighbors for parties, Brises, and other events, was likewise sold to a Wall Street honcho who plans to use it as a house. The Lycée Français has sold off its impressive collection of Upper East Side buildings for residential use.

As space is monopolized by part-time residents, it sucks the life out of these neighborhoods—and further raises the barriers to the sorts of amenities that make Manhattan a distinctive, interesting place: museums and parks, schools, clubs, hotels, office buildings. If the trend continues, ever larger swaths of Manhattan will come to resemble a limestone and brownstone Buckhead, comatose bedroom communities that have no more civic bustle than the suburbs many city dwellers came here to avoid."

GravatarNite TJ. Peaceful dreams.

GravatarLineup listed at Kos, top story. Guess what tim the catholic will be discussing?

the disproportionately detrimental effect imposed on the middle class by the punative Bankruptcy bill that the whores in the legislators gave their corporate daddies? including joe the hoe...

GravatarNTodd, thanks re: pod stuff.

To the rest (most especially Sallyh), yeah rich vs poor is Big Deal.

I am, of course(being one of them) on theside of the Poor.

It seems that once one becomes comfortably wealthy, one forgets what it was like to be on the begative side $$'ly.

What? I don;t want creature comforts? Whjat, I don;t want to be able to buy lovely art to adorn my walls? I don;t want nice lighting, nice flooring, etc, etc, nice vacations?

Hell, if I could afford to go visit my friend in Albuquerque once/year, I wouldn't?

$$. It's ALL about $$.

GravatarAnyone from Team PHAT here who could tell me where to find First Draft's RSS if it has one?

They don't appear to have one, and BlogStreet no longer generates RSS. Lots of people are subscribing to feeds via Bloglines, so you might check that out.

what the hell IS an RSS feed, and why would one want one?

RSS is a "syndication" format that allows you to have a news reader program (oft-called an 'aggregator') automagically get the latest posts from all your favorite blogs and other news sources. Quite handy, 'specially with podcasts.

And sallyh - a Sam twofer, just for you.

GravatarNight moonbats

Gravatar"the disproportionately detrimental effect imposed on the middle class by the punative Bankruptcy bill that the whores in the legislators gave their corporate daddies? including joe the hoe..."

When hell freezes over.

Gravatarbkny ...

That article was vomitous. NY mag has gone into the shitter. It was great up until approx. 1985. Now it is just a paean to wealth. That "Strategist" section is a catalog. Virtually every feature is designed to stir the reptilian brain's desire to make another purchase. Too bad, because I'd had high hopes for Adam Moss, the new editor. Do you remember his '80s mag, "7 Days?" It was actually good.

GravatarApparantly, NTodd is very kindly donating his slice of shortbread to yours truly.

Not true, not true! I love shortbread! I was just sayin'...ah, forget it. But I still want my shortbread, damn it.

GravatarNtodd:
That top Sam pic is a keeper. What a cutey!!!!

GravatarBut I still want my shortbread, damn it.

Now THAT's a polite way to ask.

GravatarNY Mary ... If you're looking for artists you should go to the South Bronx, Red Hook, Harlem, or Bushwick. Those are the only places people can afford studio space these days.

GravatarQuentin C--I agree that "The Train" is a great WW II movie, and its merits contrast against "Is Paris Burning?"

For instance the director, John Frankenheimer, was well trained in both cameras and editing, and had a great sense of concise drama. JF directed a number of mediocre movies, but none of them had any slack or ill-composed shots. He was a great visual storyteller, with erratic taste in scripts. JF never liked people telling him that he never top "The Manchurian Candidate," but he didn't and that's no shame/

"The Train" was admittedly an easier movie to do properly because it focused on one incident, not the whole range of stories around the liberation of Paris. The "IPB?" writers just opted out of much of what was good in the book. Like why Eisenhower and Bradley wanted DeGaulle and his tiny force in the front of the allies. The diplomatic reason was they supported Free France. The real reason was thay didn't trust DeGaulle behind them.

There's a comical scene in the book (DeGaulle, still alive, was not a character in the movie) wherein DeGaulle tricks a US supply colonel into giving him lots of gasoline, falsely citing Ike's approval. Ike ever-after referred to DeG as "that gasoline thief."

Gravatarny mag sucks. i have absolutely no use for it and am clueless about who reads it. i never see it on the subway.

GravatarCat pics? Who needs 'em? What a waste...

Oh the homepage URL...

Its nothing...

GravatarBut, I still don't get it.
TX is supposed to be red necked and bigoted. I have not seen it. Is it just where I live? I look like an ageing hippy and all I get from these people here is friendlyness and respect. agave, it is my contention that well-behaved, respectful people can get along everywhere. Nothing has changed, from that perspective. Respect the peoplle you interact with, don;t be an asshole, be honest, but not abrasive, and you will find a place anywhere. People may disagree with you, but.....

There will always be slash-and-burn-fundies, but, liekwise, there will always be just plain folks who want to get along w/you.

GravatarZe sheets, they are. . . how do you say? Clean.

GravatarNowadays, if I've got a kid sleeping in class, instead of thinking the person is lazy or disrespectful (as I might have at a younger age), my first thought is, My God, what time did he/she have to work till?
Sallyh, La Poissoniere

thank you for this Sallyh,

for all to many times i was that kid working split shifts with classes in between and always dog tired... however, sometimes i was just real hungover.

GravatarRes,

I keep meaning to get to Red Hook, where I think Kevin Smith still runs a little store.

Haven't heard from him in a while....

GravatarNtodd, That is a nice deep pic of Sam by the way.

GravatarSorry, just making sure I've read most of the thread.

Happy Passover, everybody!
njg

I guess you didn't get the meme about my MIL's cooking. Rasputin Chicken takes the happiness out of the whole thing. Heh. It's OK.

GravatarBut I still want my shortbread, damn it.

Now THAT's a polite way to ask.

Polite is my middle name!

Cat pics? Who needs 'em? What a waste...

Cute, one and all.

GravatarNYMary ... I think you're thinking of Red Bank, NJ. Smith has a store there.

GravatarTrue story of the liberation of France.

My dad was an officer on a convoy that was delivering, amongst other things, $30 million in gold bullion lent by England to France.
The officer in charge of the very long convoy wasn't a transportation officer and didn't know how to keep a convoy together.
All the highway signs had been taken down by the Germans to slow the Allied advance. The truck my dad was in charge of got lost on the way to Paris.
There was $15 million in bullion in the truck.
They were missing for a full day.

Gravatarflory - can I borrow some chicken bullion?

GravatarNot true, not true! I love shortbread!

Momma's little baby loves shortnin', shortnin'.
Momma's little baby loves shortnin' bread.
Momma's little baby loves shortnin', shortnin'.
Momma's little baby loves shortnin' bread.

That ain't all she's gonna do,
Mama's gonna make a little coffee too.

Our music teacher made us sing that stupid song when I was in grade school way back when.

Just thought I'd share a mundane moment from my childhood wth ya'll.

GravatarRes,
D'oh! I am, indeed.

GravatarSing it again, CS!

GravatarMomma's little baby loves shortnin' bread.

CS,

My granddaughter learned a diff version to that tune, and she would confront me (when I sang that verse):

"Iss NOT shorten bread, gramma!!!!:"

God, I adore that child.......she is heart of my heart!!!

GravatarRemember our Orwellian Lexicon:

Ignorance is Strength (Kill all Muslims)

Freedom is Slavery (Patriot Act)

2 + 2 = 5 (Social Security)

and now...

Constitution is Nothing

Religion is Right

Taxes are Bad

Debt is Good

Poor is Rich

Free Thinking is Unpatriotic

All Murkins will be indoctrinated in Bush DoubleSpeak. We must practice these phrases:

"Personal Savings Accounts for Social Security is Double Plus Good"

"By Bush, We will Defeat Terrorism through Ignorance"

"9/11 Changed Everything"

"Tax Cuts are Good for the Economy"

Gravatar"that gasoline thief."

LOL!

GravatarThere was $15 million in bullion in the truck.
They were missing for a full day.
flory

The actor (Karl-Otto Alberty) playing one of the two SS thugs that asked Gert Frobe for the tapestry in the Louvre also played the German Tiger tank commander in Kelly's Heroes, who splits the gold bullion with Clint Eastwood and the boys.

GravatarI just watched the History Channel special on FDR (second time). And there are many who have elevated Ronnie Reagan to the level of greatest President of the 20th century.

Good God.

Gravatar'There is no such thing anymore as history or collective memory.' You don't know how right you are, Goddess Echidne!

GravatarTHANK YOU.
I knew this was older than last month.

GravatarAgave -

If you are still around this thread:

I agree.

I live in a suberb of Houston, Pearland to be exact, and I find the people to be very respectful, cultured, and all the rest. I guess, here in Texas, it is all very situational (I know that sounds dumb, but bear with me). We are normal yet liberal people living in mcmansion-esque area, nobody wants trouble so no politics are overtly discussed and no intolerance is displayed outright (for the record, I'm of Mexican descent).

BUTTTTT . . . .

The legacy and spectre of intolerance is roiling under the surface of many areas that lay adjacent to us. Dixie flags fly and bumper stickers abound.

When I was in high school we played Santa Fe High and Intermediate in football. Our black folk were always on edge because invariably there would be some race-baiting along with the usual shit-talking on the field. Santa Fe was all white and proudly so.

GravatarBetween this, "Justice Sunday," and the 60th anniversary of the death marches that marked the last stages of German withdrawl--and killed thousands of already-decimated Jews, queers, and political dissidents--my brain hurts.

GravatarI am from the island of Jamaica and I am seeking a Scholarship I am currently in the field of Geographic Information Systems but there is currently two university in Jamaica that train persons in this area most of the time it is very hard to get in.
I want to study aboard but I can not come up with all the money and I am seeking. if not GIS, theology.
Thanks and God bless you all
