i'd like to know what the fuck klein is watching:
"CNN remains firmly committed to remaining the best source of intelligent, unbiased, insightful information about politics," chief Jon Klein said in an e-mailer to TVNewser this afternoon. "Judy's departure, which I regret, marks the end of a brilliant career, but far from the end of CNN's devotion to covering the political landscape, which is more dynamic today than it has ever been in my lifetime and yours."
Klein told the AP that he is re-examining the network's political coverage, and that IP may not remain on the schedule. So I asked him: "Have you committed to doing an hour of political news daily in some form?" He responded:
"As you know, we're weighing many outstanding options for recalibrating our political coverage to have you committed reflect the new realities. We will definitely remain THE place to watch in the afternoon for the latest political info and insights."

Two questions immediately arise in reading the Harper's article, "Soldiers of Christ" by Jeff Sharlet. Why was the complete overrunning of Colorado Springs allowed to happen totally under the radar of the corporate press, and why even now, is it just written about in Harper's. These people are nothing more than a cult who use extra legal ways of achieving their ends. Perhaps if CNN would spend less time on runaway brides and more time covering exactly what it is that the extreme, radical religious right is trying to accomplish, we would not be in such a pickle.
Something DWD has some thoughts on, perhaps.

I was watching from Australia a few hours ago when the lady ranf home from New Mexico.
Greta Van Whatsername sounded positively pissed off that she had been found before Fox had a chance to nail the fiance.
I heard Greta's interview with him a day or so ago and (poor fool) he answered all her questions honestly, including the one where she asked him why he didn't seem to be too upset... Jeezzzzus! The last guy that answered one of her questions is on Death row now (one Scott Petersen).
When Greta was chatting with the studio wonk she admitted that she had tried so hard to get one of the woman's family to say somethig bad about the fiance, but couldn't even get a nibble. They adore him! And they trust him! Not even "off camera" would they get nasty about him. She further admitted that she was naturally suspicious of him as he had been so cool (his excuse: trying to stay positive). The studio wonk agreed that the "usual" story in these abduction cases is that the lover/husband/fiance is the perp, and it was plain from day-1 that Fox was angling this pitch.
How sad that she's alive!
MY own opinion?
The whole thing's a hoax to add to their truseau. Disappear. Make it look like abduction or murder. Get Fox to make a few nasty suggestions and then pop back into existence, lawyer and agent in tow and take the fuckers to the cleaners in appearance fee and slander suits.
It'd serve them right.
Mark my words: this will be the "next development". Fox will do everything that is necessary to pin a fraud rap on the couple.
You heard it here first.

There are a few items in today's Bobo's World, but I also found it necessary to take a look at the past.
We hear much about the importance of "tradition" to southerners, but any objective look at southern history sees mainly a murderous society obsessed with slavery, lynching, Jim Crow, and continued racism.
Here's a reminder of one of the thousands of lynchings that make up that proud tradition:
WACO - Of the nearly 500 lynchings that took place in Texas before the crime abated in the 1930s, the "Waco horror" is among the most notorious.
On May 15, 1916, Jesse Washington, a retarded black farm hand, was mutilated, tortured and hanged over a bonfire in the Waco town square as a crowd of 15,000 watched and cheered. Minutes earlier, the 17-year-old had been convicted in a brief trial of the rape and murder of a white woman, a crime to which authorities said he confessed.
Neither the county sheriff nor presiding judge did anything to stop the mob from dragging Washington from the stately domed McLennan County Courthouse, according to historical accounts. The mayor and police chief watched the gruesome spectacle as Fred Gildersleeve, Waco's most successful commercial photographer, took pictures that he sold as souvenirs...
The article goes on to explain that some Texans are trying to come to terms with this murderous past-- which is truly a good thing. Still, not all are on that page, and we get this fact:
Despite a history of 492 documented lynchings in Texas between 1882 and 1930 — ranking Texas third in the nation — no city in the state has erected a public memorial acknowledging the racial violence.
Same as it ever was.

Wapo's Dana Milbank this morning.
He corrects Bush with facts -
directly and without quoting any
Dems.
Bush, for his part, asserted that Social Security would go flat broke in 2041: "In other words, you're working all your life, you're putting money in, and by the time it comes for you to get ready to retire, there's nothing there." Yet, even if politicians do nothing about Social Security, it would pay out nearly 75 percent of promised benefits after 2041.
[snip]
Speaking of 75 years, Bush criticized the 1983 Social Security changes that were supposed to keep the system afloat for that long. "The problem is, 22 years after 1983, we're still talking about it," he said. "The 75-year fix lasted about 22 years." Actually, with Social Security forecast to remain solvent through 2041, the fix will have lasted 58 years.
[snip]
y'know, fleeing the scene of a crime (in my mind, 600 people at a wedding is a felony offense) is punishable by at least a year of working at the gift registry at Macy's.

One news event I'll always remember was the day the bride CNN had been speculating for days as having been kidnapped and murdered by her husband-to-be turned up alive and well, admitting she got cold feet and ran away on her own. Despite the fact there was absolutely no story here, and the following other events were happening (posted at your website) at the same time -
• Four U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq
• Vietnam marks fall of Saigon
• Iran 'may restart nuclear activities' | Nuclear powers
• Bomb blast rocks downtown Cairo
• Lynndie England to plead guilty to Abu Ghraib abuse
- CNN spent hours exclusively rehashing the "runaway bride" story, which mattered not a whit to anyone else in the world aside from the immediate family.
That was the day CNN cemented its reputation for me!
Charlie Brown's immortal saying comes to mind. "Good grief."
Mrs DWD and I are laughing over the two guys who said they found buried treasure. (It turns out that the only reason it was buried is because they "claimed it" and buried it themselves.

Former DOE Official Pleads Guilty to Fraud
By PETE YOST
The Associated Press
Saturday, April 30, 2005; 12:55 AM
WASHINGTON -- A former deputy undersecretary for safe and drug free schools at the Education Department pleaded guilty to charging the government for personal travel, including trips to Texas where he continued working as a visiting judge while employed in Washington.
Eric Andell pleaded guilty to one count of conflict of interest, the Justice Department said Friday. He faces up to one year in prison and has agreed to reimburse the federal government $8,659.85. He will be sentenced July 29.
The charge stems from expenses on 14 trips from late 2002 to September 2003 that federal authorities say were motivated in part by his desire to accrue service time toward receipt of a pension from the state of Texas.
Andell, a former justice for the First Court of Appeals in Texas, made seven trips to Houston where he acted as a visiting state judge, according to documents filed in the case.
Andell came to Washington as a senior adviser to then-Education Secretary Rod Paige, who appointed him to run the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools.
For several of the trips, Andell received his federal government salary as sick leave "when in fact he was working and being paid as a visiting judge in the state of Texas," according to the court papers.
He also filed federal expenses when he traveled to Austin, Texas, on Aug. 13, 2003 in order "to seek appointment from the governor of Texas," according to the court documents, which provide no elaboration. The office of Republican Gov. Rick Perry said it could not confirm a meeting with Andell because the appointments office was already closed for the day.
All the trips involved at least some travel for personal purposes, the court documents stated. Andell went twice to New York where he took in Broadway shows, attended a Peter, Paul and Mary concert in Columbus, Ohio, attended football games in Houston and Detroit, and was present for a gala at the University of Houston. ...

Back in college I dabbled a bit in psychology and economics, and I think this story illustrates two things:
#1) the enormous stresses we place on our brides-to-be, (and I'm hoping cnn has a special on this soon)and
#2) just how 'flat' the us of a has become. Isn't it amazing that within hours of her disappearance, thru the wonders of teevee and the media and the internets everyone in the country was on the lookout for the missing bride? And how, in the end, our missing bride was able to reconnect with her lover thru the wonder of a payphone in NM?
It used to be that the flat earth metaphore would be appropriate in describing a backwoods place like Albuquerque, but now that they have payphones and such it's flat in a different way...the paradigm has shifted.

Having said that, what a great freaking story. Every element is over the top, from her crazed eyeballs to fleeing the wedding with the 600 guests and 14 bridesmaids. That is just the best! OT, I know, but Big Daddy Mars, in case you didn't see this on a previous thread:
A few decades ago Asshole of the Interior, James Watt, said pretty much this same thing. When he was asked about conserving forests, his comment was something like, "The world's going to end in a few years, so why bother?"
Big Daddy, "When the last tree is felled, the Lord will come back" is an apocryphal quotation, like the supposed "cannot quote" of Lincoln. Bill Moyers apologized to James Watt for using it.

Of Non-sequiters and the logic of losers.
The other day, I don't believe I am alone in this, the "insurgents" (actually, patriots if we use the classic definition) managed to kill or wound more than a hundred and forty people in Iraq. A general, I was too stupified from working to remember his name, denigrated their efforts as being amateurish and then went on to opine that their actions were a sure sign that we are winning.
Taking that logic a step further, the more people they kill and maim, the closer they are to defeat. We are not only winning, but the deaths of our soldiers and Iraqi civilians are PROOF.
Good Grief.

watertiger,
Mine, at least, was (relatively) reasonable. Because of some Amtrak fuckup, my parents weren't going to be able to attend the planned nuptials at the Borough Hall, just the reception at the bar. As noted, Mother Thers found a judge, and we ended up doing to whole thing at the bar, which was fine by me.
Our mutual friend made the funniest wedding joke ever. "I always cry at weddings with an open bar."
NB: I did not hop a bus to the midwest, southwest, or any other far distant region. I was just cranky. All I could hear in my head was Cher in Moonstruck. "If I didn't get married at City Hall, with strangers at the door, maybe I wouldn't have had the bad luck I had!"

timster explains why "fixing" SS is hard work:
Russert: That’s the problem. If you solve it now, it’s a cavity. If you wait until then, it’s a root canal or an extraction.
But it’s real and the difficulty is this: the Democrats feel dissed. They don’t feel the president has reached out and cooperated – he’s fought them on judicial nominations, fought them on tax cuts and now he’s extending the olive branch, saying, “Why can’t we work together.” The atmosphere is so poisonous, it’s going to be very difficult to get people to sit down and work out a compromise, even though, privately, both parties admit something must be done. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5961048

Profits amaze even analysts
With oil prices, 'It's like they're printing money'
By MICHAEL LIEDTKE
Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO - Pumped up by persistently high energy prices, the oil industry maintained its streak of massive — and growing — quarterly profits this week, aggravating motorists and amazing financial analysts.
"I have been following this industry for 18 years and I have never seen anything like this," Oppenheimer & Co. analyst Fadel Gheit said Friday. "It's like they're printing money."
The results of the world's four largest oil companies illustrate just how well the industry has fared lately.
Since the end of 2003, Royal Dutch-Shell Group of Companies, BP Group, Exxon Mobil and ChevronTexaco have earned a combined $97 billion, including $23.8 billion during the first three months of this year.
.......
By the way. I am a biologist and don't know much about economics. Atrios, help me here, tell me if I am wrong. If oil companies are getting filthy rich because crude oil prices are high, doesn't it really mean that they are jacking up their prices to the consumer at a rate substantially greater than the price of crude or the availability of refined gasoline would justify?
Maybe they do this gouging because pschologically they know we will accept it, and once the 2 buck barrier is broken it will never go back?
By the way, I am not opposed to high gasoline taxes as a part of a way to conserve, I just wish I was paying them to a governmental agency instead of to Exon, Texaco/Chervron, et al.

Yes, these fanatical thieves under the leadership of the so-called Mao Tse-tung had caught Miss Johnson off guard for one brief but fatal moment and destroyed her.
(Miss Johnson is submerged in a tide of yellow men)
Just as they are ready to do anytime free men anywhere waver in their defence of democracy.
(A sailing ship with American flag sails in over yellow men. Zoom in on the flag: Uncle Sam appears in front of it.)
Yes, once again American defence proves its effectiveness against international communism. Using this diagram of a tooth to represent any small country, we can see how international communism works by eroding away form the inside
(diagram of tooth rotting from inside and collapsing)
When one country or tooth falls victim to international communism, its neighbours soon follow.
(the remaining teeth fall sideways into the gap)
In dentistry, this is known as Domino Theory. but with american defence the decay is stopped before it starts and that's why nine out of ten small countries choose American defense ...
... Or Crelm toothpaste with the miracle ingredient, Fraudulin! The white car represents Crelm toothpaste with the miracle ingredient, Fraudulin.
(two cars in a bleak landscape)
The non-white car represents another toothpaste.
(the cars race ofd)
Both toothpastes provide 30% protection.
(they pass a banner: '60% protection')
At 60% protection both toothpastes are doing well. And now at 90% protection the ... wait!
(the grey car stops dead at the '90% protection' banner)
The non-white car is out, and the Crelm toothpaste goes on to win with 100% protection! Yes, do like all smart motorists. Choose Crelm toothpaste.

The county that the missing woman is from is a huge Republican suburban wasteland. Miles from Atlanta, 25-30 years ago it was farmland and wilderness. Now it is wall-to-wall strip malls, low cost housing that is chock full of gang activity, and right-wing churches. They, like Newt's infamous Cobb County, refuse to let the Atlanta mass transit system come out there to keep the African-Americans away. To their chagrin, housing built at the beginning of their boom days was cheap and crappy. The earlier residents moved out further and a large population of Hispanics moved in. Now they are trying to build virtual walls of development to separate themselves from the Hispanics. Just a few tibits of information you won't hear on CNN.

Mostly, I am excited about finally taking the kids to Europe (his mom is buying our plane tickets and we'll be staying with her otherwise no way could we afford it). The wedding part is also nice. If we do it over there rather than at city hall here, it makes the citizenship process that much smoother, apparently.

QL, I just read that article. These people are just pure and simple out and out freaks - on par with Jim Jones or the Hale Bopp cult comitting suicide in their Nikes. And the pastor of the New Life Church is an advisor to Bush.
BTW, I read a short blurb in the paper yesterday that the Air Force Academy (in Colorado Springs) is under investigation for engaging in religious discrimination because several fundie officers and profs are harassing non-fundie airmen.

Toads keep exploding in German pond
Associated Press
BERLIN — More than 1,000 toads have puffed up and exploded in a Hamburg pond in recent weeks, and German scientists have no explanation for what's causing the combustion.
Both the pond's water and body parts of the toads have been tested, but scientists have been unable to find a bacteria or virus that would cause the toads to swell up and pop, said Janne Kloepper, of the Hamburg-based Institute for Hygiene and the Environment.
"It's absolutely strange," she said Wednesday. "We have a really unique story here in Hamburg. This phenomenon really doesn't seem to have appeared anywhere before."
The toads at a pond in the upscale neighborhood of Altona have been blowing up since the beginning of the month, filling up like balloons until their stomachs suddenly burst.
"It looks like a scene from a science-fiction movie," Werner Schmolnik, the head of a local environment group, told the Hamburger Abendblatt daily. "The bloated animals suffer for several minutes before they finally die."

Ba'al, I read last night that a German scientist had solved the mystery of the exploding toads. Seems that crows had found a way to peck into the chest cavities of the toads to remove their livers. The toad's natural defense mechanism is to puff up. Without the liver - which apparently allows them to unpuff - they keep puffing up till the explode.

STRATEGYPAGE NOTES THE MARCH OF DIPLOMACY:
Iraq's neighbors are increasingly supporting the interim government and opposing the Sunni Arab and al Qaeda terrorists. Most of them are more or less are opposed to radical Islamist movements, so that is one thread linking them together. But there are also other issues affecting the stance taken by the various countries surrounding Iraq. Turkey seems in favor of a strong centralized Iraqi government so that the Iraqis can keep the Kurds under control. The Gulf Arabs want to see a strong Iraq as a counterbalance to Iran, though the Kuwaitis are somewhat concerned that a revived Iraqi military might threaten them. Jordan sees the potential need for a strong ally in the event of problems with Syria, while Syria seems inclined to support the new Iraqi regime if only as a way to improve ties with the U.S. Two countries are less committed to the new Iraqi government. Saudi Arabia is tentative about supporting Iraq, since it has to balance its brand of conservative Islam with the certainty that a successful democratic -- or at least representative -- government in Iraq will probably be strongly secular. The Iranians don't want Iraq to fall under the control of either the Sunni Arab dominated Baath Party, or the Sunni Islamists (represented now by al Qaeda), both their blood enemies, but have reservations about a secular, democratic Iraq and about American influence in the region. The Iranian situation is complicated by the fact that their country is a clandestine conduit for the movement of Islamist personnel and money among Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq.
I think this counts as progress.

Oh, NOW I get it. The religious angle. The pastor is speaking now about how strong in faith the groom is and how the bride has committed sin, but her husband forgives her, and everyone was praying that she was just a "runaway bride" and Lord Almighty, it's come true!
Moral to the story: PRAYER WORKS

That profiler, Pat Brown, makes me nuts. Can't stand her. But if she's the one who called the runaway bride a liar, I'll give her props for getting SOMETHING right.
I'll never understand why these stories make the national news. Local? Sure. On the national scale, this is meaningless.

The guerrilla movement pulled off a spectacular set of bombings in Iraq on Friday, as though responding decisively to President Bush's news conference Thursday night in which he said, " "I believe we're making really good progress in Iraq . . ." In Azamiyah, a relatively well-off Sunni Arab neighborhood in Baghdad known for its Sunni fundamentalism, guerillas detonated 4 bombs in quick succession, mainly targeting police and military. This set of attacks alone left 20 dead.
Another coordinated set of bombing attacks was carried out in Mada'in near Baghdad, where an initial explosion was set off as bait to attact peolice and army troops, then when they arrived they were targeted with bombs. These attacks killed 13.
Guerrillas stressed their ability to strike all over the country, also hitting targets in Baquba, Irbil, Basra and elsewhere. (Irbil is in the far northern Kurdish region, Basra a largely Shiite city in the far south.
Thus sayeth Prof. Juan Cole.

Earlier this week, a once-prominent American politician weighed in on the questions of judicial appointees, the filibuster and religion in politics, and he made a lot of sense. Here's what he said:
We began as a nation with a clear formulation of the basic relationship between God, our rights as individuals, the government we created to secure those rights, and the prerequisites for any power exercised by our government.
"We hold these truths to be self-evident," our founders declared. "That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. . . ."
But while our rights come from God, as our founders added, "governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just power from the consent of the governed."
So, unlike our inalienable rights, our laws are human creations that derive their moral authority from our consent to their enactment--informed consent given freely within our deliberative processes of self-government.
Any who seek to wield the powers of government without the consent of the people, act unjustly.
Excellent points, sir! America was founded with "a clear formulation of the basic relationship" between God and government--a rebuke to those who today would disfranchise religious believers. Laws "derive their moral authority from our consent." Take that, activist judges! And "any who seek to wield the powers of government without the consent of the people, act unjustly." Reactionary Democrats are wrong to subvert majority rule via the filibuster.
What's odd about this is that the speaker was Al Gore, and he doesn't actually believe any of this. Even so, it's nice of him to say it.

Which Fox network have you been watchin', FL?
Actually, if something breaks overnight, especially on the weekend, Fox will usually have not-horrific coverage. That's probably because the (w)anchors aren't around, and the morning propaganda memo hasn't circulated. The other cablenewsers are busy running recorded shit.
Still, the gap between CNNi and CNN domestic grows ever-greater, proving that American audiences are considered worthy of no more than 24/7 local news-style coverage.

On the Countdown Keith had the courage and good sense to comment on the obvious -- the utterly crazed and bugged-out eyesballs featured in every photograph of the "missing bride."
No one at CNN seemed to notice.
And CNN's latest online poll asks the pressing question:
Should police prosecute a person who fakes their own abduction?
Yes
No
Depends on the circumstances
Amazingly, thus far, 67% have voted "Yes."
Clearly, the "yes" crowd consists of the idiots who bought into this non-story and feel cheated.
