I am still mad about the morning topic: why in the hell doesn't our media go after the errant frat boy over his cooked intelligence for Iraq?
On another subject, this is just an idea that occurred to me: with all of the bloggers saving their favorite Bush is an asshole stories, why not put them together in a book. We could call it, THE UGLIEST AMERICAN and then post it first on the web and then look for a publisher.

Evening folks. Work didn't suck today (actually, it doesn't suck most days). In fact, it was fun. I had a conversation with a Bush-worshipping co-worker who is actually fairly perceptive, just bamboozled - she commented to me that she thinks I'm a bit unique because I'm both analytical and creative. Of course, I took this as an invitation to round about get a political point across, just by saying, "yeah, you know, that's why I won't accept any labels, because I DO think about everything, and after I think about it, I believe what I believe because it's what makes sense." Which seemed to resonate. So maybe next time I can push it a bit further, as to why this or that thing that Bush said or did simply didn't make sense.
Just chipping away at it day after day, one person at a time. It's not enough, but it's all I can do.

i sat behind my desk with the lights off, staring at the bottom of another empty whiskey bottle, when who should walk though the door but 5'4" of nothing but trouble, mostly legs, and a little black dress.
"hello, r@d@r," he said.
"hello, jimmy. or is it jeff now?" i pulled a drag off my cigarette and blew it in his face. "blown any preznits lately?"
jimmyjeff pouted. "you know even i don't swing that way, r." he sat in my guest chair and crossed his legs. "i'm strictly top."
"then what's with the dress?"
she got up and took one of my cigarettes, and looked at me for a second. i didn't move. she lit it herself from the big lighter on my desk. "i just got back from a funeral," she said through the smoke.
"another one of your boyfriends kill himself for being outed on drudge report?" i asked, coldly. i wasn't forgetting that weekend on fire island so long ago. it had left me bitter. i used to be such a twink before my run-in with jimmyjeff and his young rethuglican crowd. now i was jaded, and old, and had no time for sob stories in cocktail dresses.
"you think you're such a hard case, r@d@r, but i've fucked the most powerful man on earth up the ass. i've heard him whinney like a sick nag. you don't know what it is..." he broke into a sob, the usual histrionics. "...to feel real loss."
i laughed, and threw my cigarette butt out the window. as i grabbed my hat and got up to leave, i said, "that black car that's been following me. wouldn't be some trained monkeys with earplugs would it? working for the Big Trained Monkey?"
jimmyjeff looked worried and bit his fulsome lower lip. "i'm worried r@d@r. there's been some things i've been hearing...awful things. like they're done with our kind...they're going to round us all up. after all we've done for them..."
i sneered. "what do you mean 'our' kind?" i handed him the empty bottle. "here, maybe this'll keep you company. so long, toots." i didn't hold the door open for him as i walked away.
"i'm scared r@d@r! they're not bluffing this time!" he cried out pathetically at my back.
"neither am i," i muttered under my breath. as i headed for the 125 stop, i knew just the man i had to see. a man who lived across the bridge; a man with a strange name like mine; a man who had a lot of friends, with torches and pitchforks.

Allawai Possibly Dead/Injured by Resistance Attack
Unconfirmed reports from the Resistance indicate that collaborator Iyad Allawi may dead or critically injured after a Resistance attack. The attack may explain the absence of Allawi suddenly from all media outlets as well as his absence from the oath ceremony given by the new collaborator government in recent days.

chris, thanks for the stat check, I don't know where to find that kind of thing (shame on me).
The country is dealing with wage erosion bigtime. Laid-off workers find work again at much lower pay, plus the horrible inflation in medical costs, plus the tripling of home prices in some areas have just about killed any hope for a future among those who weren't established before 2000. Of course, Bush and Greenspan love asset inflation, it makes their millionaire friends look richer.

After seeing months and months or photos of these almost-human bottom-feeders I have to wonder out loud "how in Christ's name is it possible for one race (i.e., Arabs) to be so hideously ugly?!"
...They have got to be THE single most unattractive group of beings to ever disgrace the planet Earth. What's in their genes that makes them so terribly, grossly ugly?...
And speaking of Middle Eastern chicks, have you ever seen ONE truly attractive Arab woman? And let's not count the recent spate of Lebanese hotties that've been popping up on this and other 'net sites lately. There's a lot of European blood in Lebanon, which explains the light hair and eyes of many. But as for the rest, puke-city! Oh, do WE, Ms. Emily? Put your list up of just where the "liberal bias" resides. On The New Hour? Watch that one FAIR has studied it. On Gwin Ifel? Condi's best bud? On Tucker Carlson, WSJ? You know the replacement for that raving radical on Wall Street Week? On Frontline?
Certainly not on "Greater Boston" with Emily "the liberals fired me from ABC" Rooney.
Pretty soon you're going to be down to Miss Marple and The Old Junk Show.
So Ms. Rooney, you've said it and allueded to it for years. Put up your proof of where the liberals of PBS are or the world has every reason to believe that they are in exactly the same place as the "liberals of ABC". In your mind and the eye of FOX, another of your former employers.

Leftists should do better arguing with Christians since the latter are so reverent towards Christ's historicity and Leftists (being sympathetic to Marx) are so attuned to precedence as authority
Jesus was a leftist, told people to give to the poor, love one another, etc. I'm left and I think Marx was a bozo. So much nonsequitor in America, if some fundie spin doctor said over and over again that Nixon was communist, people would believe it. This country is a disaster.

Has anybody answered your ? about why Holoscan cuts off the comments, and what to do, if anything?
I wanna know, too, but have been waiting for an answer to you, so I could act like I knew.
From Las Vegas Review Journal, May 6,
via dailykos.
"The man's father is a wonderful human being," [Sen. Harry] Reid said in response to a question about President Bush's policies. "I think this guy is a loser.
"I think President Bush is doing a bad job," he added to a handful of chuckles.
"He's driving this country into bankruptcy," Reid said, referring to the deficit. "He's got us in this intractable war in Iraq where we now have about 1,600 American soldiers dead and another 15,000 injured."
[snip]
After the statement was released, Reid phoned the Review-Journal to acknowledge he thought he crossed the line.
"You know the president is in Europe, probably sleeping," Reid said in an interview this afternoon. "But I called (Karl) Rove and apologized for what I said."
That's not terribly polite, now, is it?

It goes kind of like this. About 200 years ago, Toby's ancestors came to the USA from Scotland or Belfast or wherever your basic southern white trash hales from.
They spent the next 175 years inbreeding and staying precisely where they were 200 years before, at the bottom of the food chain.
Then comes Toby. And Toby, even though he's fucking fat, stupid, and nobody fucking likes him, gets to see a fucking moronic ignorant piece of white trash in the White House.
So he feels validated. 200 years of ignorance, inbreeding, burning crosses, and obese females in housedresses suddenly makes him qualified to lecture "you libruhs" on what "y'all" got to do to win elections.
So he comes here and revels in the fact that a good percentage of the population of 'Merka has sunk into the primordial oose with his corrupt and inbred DNA.
Thank you George Bush...

You know why I hate Toby and those jerkoffs at LGF?
When I was 10 years old, my parents took me to my grandparents after we had gone to McDonald's. So I'm eating what's left of my french fries and my grandmother looks at me and says "why are you eating food niggers touch with their hands?"
That's child abuse. And what I see when I look at Toby or Charles Johnson or Cox and Forkum or any of them is the fact that I'm never, ever not going to stop hearing that voice. We're never going to be free of this fucking crap, ever.
And what really fucking breaks my heart every time I see those evil hateful animals post another Rachel Corrie pancakes joke is the fact that they're mocking someone who in her own way tried to rebel against that voice, considered people with brown skin to be worth risking her life over.
And not, it's not really Toby. It's just that he's one of the millions and millions and millions of herde animals who thinks just like a lot of my family does. They're everywhere.

While Tedby, ah, Toby gets wound up for three days of screaming that we are all racists you might want to take a couple of minutes for rudeness. If Tedby, oh, sorry, TO-BY goes to see it might take him the rest of the night.
5/6/2005
Christ Weary of Creationists:
Here's a tale of the Young Rude Pundit: Back in his high school in the South, the Rude Pundit caused something of a stir with his science fair project: "Evolution vs. Creationism - Which One Is the Truth?" In front of his wooden triptych, which was covered in pictures of Charles Darwin and images from non-Biblical creation myths, like a turtle with the Earth on its back, oh, and naked people and a stray ape or two, the Rude Pundit had made two displays. One was a cardboard box Garden of Eden, with lots of fake shrubbery, a tree with a clay snake wrapped around it, and two naked little white-skinned dolls he had stolen from his sister. The other was a piece of plywood with carefully crafted clay figures showing the development of humans from amoeba-like things to lizardfish to, eventually, us.
The Rude Pundit's presentation, given to students, judges and teachers, came down unequivocally on the side of evolution. Mostly the Rude Pundit did this project to piss off his churchgoing classmates, who kept shoving creationism in his face. And piss them off, he did, with students coming up to the Rude Pundit and asking him if he really, really believed he came from an ape and if he believed in God (that question was generally met with a "Yeah, why not" answer, which, strangely, pissed 'em off even more).
Good night my native land. Good night.

By the way, Toby, as we all know, rightwingers are not intellectuals, so I guess for your crew, we're just left with "dishonest".
As for the "culture of cynicism," again who knows what you mean, one can assume that anyone who is reality-based these days is to be labelled a "cynic." I'm sure I speak for all of us here when I say that it's better to be a cynic than to be a punk and a tool. I don't want smoke blown up my ass, no matter what pretty shade of purple it comes in. I believe Creationism should be taught in schools--believe metaphysics should be taught in schools. Along with logic and rhetoric.
The problem, of course, with that route is that it might generate people who think for themselves. We can't, of course, have that.
(And we also might see fewer of those folks who say that Science disproves the existence of God, too.)

The reason there are only a couple of "non-white" faces posted is that only a couple of "non-white" people elected to send a photo. From the set of facts you've presented, no other conclusion can be supported.

And now watch him run it into the ground.
The problem Toby is that you can't see how people of the same race or religious group or nationality have widely varying experiences.
For you, skin color or religion is destiny.
That's why Charles Johnson can't admit Arabs are individual human beings. That's why a Klansman can't admit blacks are individuals and that's why you're hung up on skin color.
You don't see experience, imagination, thought. You see DNA.
It's only your KKK style Southern racism hammered into a Republican press release designed to bait liberals.

CD, I have a question, if you do not mind. I have two nice, handsome young sons. One is 21 and is about to score a 4.0 at MSU raising this from a 3.78 last term. The other is a high school junior. My question is this: since the older one did a 27 on the SAT in Math and it averaged out to a 22 and the younger one apparently is about to get a 27 on the language section and average out to a 22 - do universities look at scores in relation to the subject matter the student is aiming for? i.e. older son might have been better in math and engineering and the younger one is an arts or Social Science curriculum. (My feelings are that they give these tests so that people like me can be broke for a decade since a twenty two makes them ineligible for merit scholarships and all)

That's it. There's no other conclusion that is supportable. And referring to "proportional" in the context of 100 photos out of a pool of tens of thousands - perhaps even 100,000 - people - is also unsupportable. You know, I really do not understand the sound of the ocean and why it appeals to me. There are reasons possibly, but at the core, it is something that is intangible, that connection between the ebb and flow and myself. The same is true for me when I have been alone on a bright day in woods that are heavy with snow and quiet. The intangible is what in my mind's eye keeps faith and love alive. Why people have to allow their faith and love to spiral down to coarse acts and children's stories and not see the complex escapes me.

DWD- email me. i like to give specific advice and would need some details to help you best.
that said: in general, the rule of thumb to follow in college admissions and standardized test scores is that is varies. that sucks, and i'm sorry to say it. but some schools will totally ignore a score under certain circumstances, i've personally admitted kids into a top 20 school with and act of 18. i've also tanked kids with scores of 34. the scores are soooooooooooo much less important than parents think they are. where they matter: scholarships specifically tied to scores, schools that employ strict cutoffs. the latter aren't too common these days; no school can afford to turn down a rich legacy, star athlete, brilliant yet one dimensional genius, etc.
and for yourself, always remember this: scientifically, the scores only and ever correlate to the following: parental education, socioeconomic class, and geographic location. i've seen morAns from NH get 32 on the act, and true superstars utterly bomb, from other areas of the country. standardized tests are shockingly biased, imho.

BTW, it appears congratulations is due to the blogosphere and activists in general.
Microsoft, faced with unrelenting criticism from employees and gay rights groups over its decision to abandon support of a gay rights bill in Washington state, reversed course again yesterday and announced that it was now in support of the bill.
Unfortunately, DWD, the vote in the Washington legislature on gay rights was last week, and it went down by one vote.

It is true that when you really consider the typical blog sociology, there's always an incredibly small subset of visitors who respond to ANYTHING--not just comments, but also anonymous things like surveys. But judging from many of the e-mails I've gotten, there's a surprisingly high number of people who say "I'm a lurker" or "I don't post very often, so can I still participate?" So really, I'm not sure you can draw any lesson about ethnicity here. You can, however, perhaps learn something about which *individuals* are the most extroverted. No, no, he's that guy who was an alien wannabe and ended up working for them.
What, the guy who ends up being framed and served up on a platter?
Aw, come on, guys. Look at poor Tobe. He comes over here to do the classic flaming-bag-of-shit-on-the-front-porch trolling, and realizes that we're a lot more fun than the LGF crowd. Sure, we might be on the wrong side of history, but we tell more and better dirty jokes--and besides, our hot babe quotient is immensely higher than Freerepublic.
Like I said before, come for the trolling, stat for the smut.
(there's also much more cake on this site.)
So, in honor of mr being nice to Tobe, I'm going to give the Petzatollah a real answer to his observation.
Tobe, there's good reasons why so many folks posting pictures are white. While the ratio of folks with Internet access is pretty high, posting a photograph requires not only a computer, but either a digital camera or a conventional camera and a scanner--and it's kind of insane to do it without broadband. That narrows down the socio-economic profile a bit.
The other part of it is that if you're a minority (and particularly if you're a minority with progressive political leanings) you're far more likely to think that posting photographs of yourself on a site routinely critical of the government is pretty fucking stupid to the point of being dangerous. One of my best friends and artistic collaborators has told me precisely that. ("you white boys just never stop thinking that nothing's gonna happen to you," he said.)
So that's some of it.

CD, Actually I have worked in the black community for most of my adult life. After three decades, I have not learned anything I did not learn when I was a kid: I like some people better than others. Some people like me better than others. SOme people don't. Race has nothing to do with it. Those who play the race card are generally inexperienced and consequently ignorant. They assume that there are differences and the seek them. If, however, you look for commonality: you will find this. (And it is easier and more rewarding to do so)

some points about your post:
school groups like NHS or the Spanish Club (if you're not Latina and President) don't really impress officers like me. i worked (now volunteer) for a top 20 school and got to see plenty of apps with extracurriculars like NHS and SADD, even scouts. the bottom line: what did the applicant do?
being part of a club that meets once a week in homeroom isn't such a big deal, although compared to most american teens it's "significant effort." that will get you into a good state school, perhaps even consideration for some minor scholarships. but if you want Harvard on a full ride, it's a lot more. a lot more.
my advice: start early if presitigious college admissions is important to your family. conversely, accept that elitist institutions of "higher learning" are in fact social laboratories for the idle rich, they bring in the rest of us for entertainment. either way, you realize that knowledge and learning aren't the same thing, and everyone has to follow their own path, no matter what the family wants. we're (still) not china.

Anyway, I'd like to know why so many people (damn near all, in fact) at the RNC convention last year were white? It's interesting to me in a way that a cross-section of real-photo submitting Atriots out of 100 total submitted pictures out of 100,000+ visitors a day is somehow even close to indicative of the racial mix that visits the site, is not.
No, I was just looking at the mugshots and there's only a couple of non-white faces. It's just an observation to which I was looking for an explanation. Don't be so defensive!
Anyone care to take a gander at how many visitors of LGF are black? Well, I'm sure they get a few black visitors every now and then, who then leave, never to return again once they've read of a few of the "reader" comments.

Yes. I like vanilla. If I'm feeling really adventurous, B&J's Cookie Dough. Because it's mostly vanilla.

Well, that's the thing, isn't it, Sally? I don;t care what religion the president is as long as he doesn;t use it as a wedge to divide us and to assault our freedoms. Jimmy Carter was an evagelical, too. Didn't matter.
As for your knee, I started taking glucosamine/chondroitin soon after I had my car accident. I can't prove it, but I suspect it's really helped heal the tissue damage, especially in my wonky knee. My recovery has been much faster than I would have guessed it would be.

Yes, Toby, I am saying that, because my friend's right. Despite all the crap of the last 5 years, we white folks still tend to think America is our country, deep down, that it's still basically free. Our cultural indoctrination takes a long time to overcome.
It was another one of my black friends who, oberving my depressed mental state after the November elections, said, "Now you know how we feel every day of our lives."
So, yeah, brave's a word for it. But it's that eighteen year old I'm immortal brave that comes from assumptions so deep they don't go aaway until you actually get shot at.

Nope. I think he made an honest mistake. The reason he so irritatingly hangs around this site is because he gets to hang around with people who he sees himself as aspiring to.
Isn't it a little creepy the way he noticed everybody's race? I think it is.
So he doesn't see how I'm looking at his white trash attitudes from the inside, that I'm the dark skinned black guy who walks up to the light skinned white guy and says "hi brother. Passing?"
Because remember, he outed himself when he noticed everybody's race. He probably lives in a less than white neighborhood or works the graveyard shift at the recycling plant or stands behind a cash regiser at Walmart. And he hates everybody around him because they're not white.
Just my guess anyway.

Old quote but good nevertheless.
Stupid? Yes, in some ways, smart in others. He uses what intelligent he has to "support" his baseless thinking. Oxymoronic.
Ugly? Who knows. The infant picture is cute, but adults almost never look like their youth face. He doesn't post because it might be dangerous, as noted. I don't even put my email up because of that. We're being watched.
Nobody likes him? No. Nobody here really likes Toby. I guess that fits. I like his sometimes humorous comments, even if they are flippant and meant to insult.

CD, Nope: not really worrying about prestigious Eastern universities. (Public school teacher, remember? No money)
Oddly enough I went to pretty well-regarded college. I have also gone to four other schools. The very best teacher I had was at some podunk community college in Stanton,MI. Go figure. (Had only a BA in EEngineering but had been in on the computer thing from the beginning. Knew everyone, had worked with everyone: had been a lead systems programmer with IBM in the mid sixties. Got tired of traveling, went back home to Stanton and offered to teach computer. (Did not require a salary as his programs were paying him royalities and such - and he did consulting work on the side. He is also on the State of Michigan technology board) Simply a great teacher and a great man. But Montcalm Community College is hardly a household world in the scheme of academia
Education is the one activity where the more you put into it, the greater your rewards will be. You can receive a good education damned near anyplace and going to a prestigious school is no guarantee of receiving intelligence. (Bush went to Yale and Harvard, right? I would rescind his degrees if I were them)

Can you also explain to them that stars are not little light bulbs in the sky? While you're at it, could you please let them know that females were not created from a rib from a man, and that in fact are genetically the more significant sex? I know they (along with you) will not warm to this concept, the subjegation of women as breeders being one of your top priorities and all.
Also, can you please tell your "base" to stop trying to dupe other people by putting grilled cheese sandwiches with the likeness of Mary on them on eBay to make thousands off of stupid people, who are also part of your "base"?
One more thing: can you tell your "base" to stop believing George W. Bush was "appointed by god"? Those of us who wouldn't want to live in Iranian style theocracy are gettinga little nervous.

Somehow, it is human nature to define the intangible, circling it with analogies and parables to explain that which we cannot. As in the case of faith and love, we fail to truly construct the essence of the troll. We describe the troll in terms both vulgar and with warning, attempting to show those who have never tripped across these foul and vapid denizens. "Beware the troll" you say, but the uninitiated simply blink, believing surely nothing is so crass. Hence we move forward in the spiral, ramping up each moment, flailing for words. Until we finally succumb, admitting we are human and still with many questions. And then we take that last resort against that intangible troll, and define succinctly their spirit and content. Bullshit we say, simply bullshit. And then all is known, understood and agreed, for we all understand that no one wakes in the morning, thinking how wonderful the bullshit smells today.

If someone told me I could choose between screwing every Playboy playmate for the last 10 years or seeing Ohio State beat Michigan in Columbus to win the NC it's be no contest.
Take the playmates. Two Big Ten schools cannot play each other for the national championship, which requires playing a team from another conference and then getting a lucky bullshit call in overtime.

Little fly,
Thy summer’s play
My thoughtless hand
Has brushed away.
Am not I
A fly like thee?
Or art not thou
A man like me?
For I dance
And drink and sing,
Till some blind hand
Shall brush my wing.
If thought is life
And strength and breath,
And the want
Of thought is death,
Then am I
A happy fly,
If I live,
Or if I die.

Education is the one activity where the more you put into it, the greater your rewards will be. You can receive a good education damned near anyplace and going to a prestigious school is no guarantee of receiving intelligence. (Bush went to Yale and Harvard, right? I would rescind his degrees if I were them)

the sad fact is, most of us here are way more smart than the 'elite.' of any kind. seriously.
it's all about the clubiness of things. i'm part of so-and-so group and you're not. all the rest of it, (is it an elite group? no, ick~) doesn't really matter. colleges, learning, a free mind- they aren't so connected for everyone. elite univerisites are just another way of saying "restriced grounds." state schools often have (especially internationally) the smartest researchers and students.

Used to. My aunt used to have a picture of me that she stopped showing people because they would say "oh, what a beautiful niece you have!" I finally abandoned the shoulder-length hair back when I was about 7 wile my folks and I stayed at a campground on Sanibel Island that had a rule requiring males to have short hair. Mom wasn't concerned, but I demanded she cut my hair, and I've had it more or less short ever since.

We plan to be very busy tomorrow... every year it gets bigger. Last year we gave out over 3500 comic books. This year we have 4500 to give away, plus another 1000 we provided for local libraries to give out. There's also a neato Batman "Heroclix" figure that we're handing out to the first 200 people... it's a great little thing to stand on your computer.

The Earth's future looks bright--and that's bad news, according to "global warming" enthusiasts, reports Nature.com:
Our planet's air has cleared up in the past decade or two, allowing more sunshine to reach the ground, say two studies in Science this week.
Reductions in industrial emissions in many countries, along with the use of particulate filters for car exhausts and smoke stacks, seem to have reduced the amount of dirt in the atmosphere and made the sky more transparent.
That sounds like very good news. But the researchers say that more solar energy arriving on the ground will also make the surface warmer, and this may add to the problems of global warming. More sunlight will also have knock-on effects on cloud cover, winds, rainfall and air temperature that are difficult to predict.
You just can't win with these freaks.

we ought to welcome signs of true political diversity in Congress, to wit, as the Washington Times reports: "Congressional Black Caucus members no longer vote lock step with each other and the Democratic Party, reflecting a significant change in the economic status and demographics of their constituents and their own political aspirations."
The CBC is entirely Democratic, but significant numbers of its members voted with Republicans on such matters as estate tax repeal and bankruptcy reform. But Charles Rangel of New York, the caucus's second most senior member (after Michigan's John Conyers) isn't happy:
"Why any member would be voting for the bankruptcy bill or estate-tax repeal or for making the tax cuts permanent or any of those things is just stupid, but it doesn't tear us apart because whether it is a speaker or a member, we only have one vote," he said.
"We have to be very, very tolerant of a person that votes stupid, because they may think they have a good reason and they are the ones who come down here, so you may think the vote is stupid but they know what they are doing," Mr. Rangel said.
Maybe Rangel should start wearing one of those I'M WITH STUPID T-shirts on the House floor

Ba'al gets a mention over at Rude Pundit! I know he/she/it is crude, but damn, I just love the writing. Here's a piece of rant on the Kansas evolution case:
What combination of desperate economic times and religion-induced dementia is making us fight this battle over and over? In Kansas, starting yesterday and continuing today, is a debate over whether or not to require the teaching of "intelligent design" alongside evolution. "Intelligent design" is such a cutely ironic name, in the "Clear Skies Initiative" school of obfuscative rhetoric, because you have to be a complete fucking moron to believe in it. It's Christianity without mentioning Christ, because, if, say, the universe was really just shat out of the anus of a dark Baal-like deity, it'd totally fuck-up the whole "intelligent design" thing (but, goddamn, what a laugh we could all have, no?). And speaking of obfuscation, the members of the Kansas Board of Education who called the hearing didn't even have the balls to say that the true purpose was to put some kind of god back into the science classrooms. They claim they simply want to ensure that "criticism" of evolution is mentioned. Huh. Wonder what you'd use to criticize it, other than fake science, flawed axioms of desperation, and the Bible.

Then I got a job putting insulation in attics.I had to slide on my back,

When I quit my day job, I let my hair and beard grow because for decades I had to wear a coat and tie and loved the freedom of not having to shave.
It got longer and longer until I looked like zz top. Every Tuesday we'd get subs. One wednesday morning I found a pickle in my beard, and that was the end of that.

Eschaton - and the rest of you collectivists...you will lose. You've already lost the argument and now you're going to lose the votes in Congress.
America will be saved only when the likes of you have been cowed into acceptance of the ten commandments and the rule of law - rather than the rule of judges.
I can't wait for America to return to its roots: faith, the work ethic and individual liberty.
The government is NOT the answer unless you work for it.

Thankfully, she doesn't really care too much about the Hallmark holidays. We've had a crazy 3 months doing a bunch of rehab/restore work, so it's pretty much enough for her to take a break and spend time together with the kids. A lot of the places in Chicago that have Mothers' Day brunch charge crazy bucks anyway--like we're gonna pay $30 a plate to watch our 13-month-old throw a waffle on the floor. I'll come up with something, though. Involving mimosas, of course.

Flory, the waffles you just make as usual w/sourdough starter. I'll have to look for the dry fried walnuts recipe, but will do so.
The "syrup" you just take fresh cider and boil down and down and down until it is thick and sweet and lovely.
Also, we would top w/creme fraiche accented a bit w/good real vanilla and a sprinkling of fine-grained sugar.
I'll find walnut recipe and send to your email, sometime tomorrow.

The Daily Outrage
Well actually, there are several daily outrages. So perhaps there should be the one that's a little more jaw-agape brain-spinning WTF kind of outrage.
Like today there's...
Leaked memo shows US catered intelligence to fit justification for war. Outraged, right...
Chairman wants to turn PBS into the Propaganda Broadcast System. Outraged, of course...
Republicans threaten Crybaby option to pass uber-activist judges. Outrage, count me in...
Korea is testing missiles, and we're playing stubborn (or it is it they who are stubborn? Someone needs quiet time.) Typical outrage, yes...
Bankruptcy Bill, Religious control, Halliburton mismanagement. Outrage, outrage outrage...
Rubber stamp Congress pushes through Energy bill with millions in handouts to already bloated Oil companies. WTF !#?* Isn't everybody fed up with high gas prices and mad about Bush doing nothing? Doesn't this kind of outrage hit home with even the most apolitical folk?
Is Outrage Fatigue so ingrained into our psyche, that we blindly accept the next step toward corporate control of government? What happened to the time when it was common knowledge that you can't trust politicians?
I'm going to pull this car over, I swear that's what I'll do.

I like how when Reid offered a deal on filibusters, libs crowed that it was just a ruse so that the Republicans would turn it down and Reid would look diplomatic and comprimising, but when Senator Frist offered Reid a deal that all nominees in future would get an up-down vote with no filibusters or holds you claim its the sign of a weak hand. Actually Senator Frist offered a much more reasonable deal than Reid did. I don't think the issue is important to the average citizen, but it is to both bases, and going by the 2004 election the Republican base is bigger. I'm guessing the filibuster is toast and you'll have Reid to thank for his intransigence and fear of Ralph Nees and People for the American Liberal/Socialist Way

just a thought - maybe take the 4 1/2 yr old out for the day so she isn't disturbed?
Done and done. Alas, I haven't been doing this enough, since I've had papers to grade (this is where blog addiction harms not only just yourself ...)
bubba, give her a rain check!
Yeah, we have one of those once in a blue moon dates tentatively scheduled for when she's done this chapter and I'm done the latest stack o' papers.
Of course, I'd be making myself out to be more of a hero than I am if I didn't add that she did more than her share of picking up the slack when I finished my diss when the boy was about a year old. So we know where each other is/are, which can help through a lot of other things.
Saying all this is making me feel very guilty about the excessive blogging; I may have to ban meself (both work and office IPs) from Eschaton for the remainder of the weekend.
We'll see if I'm strong enough.

Hey, I have a nominee for "Wanker of the Day" for tomorrow, where some idiot says something really moronic, which makes himself look stupider than his target, plus this has the added bonus of a lame apology to make the wanker look even more idiotic!
Harry Reid should start thinking before he speaks. He is having to apologize for calling Bush a loser.
"The man's father is a wonderful human being," Reid said in response to a question about President Bush's policies.
Now, Reid has called Karl Rove and apologized. I guess that calling the President a loser is not considered polite. Or accurate since that "loser" just defeated Harry Reid's candidate and extended the Republican Party's hold over both houses of Congress in two elections. Who's the real loser, Harry?
Reid seems to have a problem with insultingly dismissing those with whom he disagrees. First he went on Meet the Press and criticized Clarence Thomas.
I think that he has been an embarrassment to the Supreme Court. I think that his opinions are poorly written. I don't--I just don't think that he's done a good job as a Supreme Court justice.
Later, when pressed on which decisions were poorly written, he came up with this decision as an example.
Oh sure, that's easy to do. You take the Hillside Dairy case. In that case you had a dissent written by Scalia and a dissent written by Thomas. There--it's like looking at an eighth-grade dissertation compared to somebody who just graduated from Harvard.
Scalia's is well reasoned. He doesn't want to turn stare decisis precedent on its head. That's what Thomas wants to do. So yes, I think he has written a very poor opinion there and he's written other opinions that are not very good.
When researched by James Taranto, it turned out that Thomas's decision was only one paragraph long. Here it is, in full.
I join Parts I and III of the Court's opinion and respectfully dissent from Part II, which holds that §144 of the Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act of 1996, 7 U.S.C. §7254, "does not clearly express an intent to insulate California's pricing and pooling laws from a Commerce Clause challenge." Ante, at 6-7. Although I agree that the Court of Appeals erred in its statutory analysis, I nevertheless would affirm its judgment on this claim because "[t]he negative Commerce Clause has no basis in the text of the Constitution, makes little sense, and has proved virtually unworkable in application," Camps Newfound/Owatonna, Inc. v. Town of Harrison, 520 U.S. 564, 610 (1997) (Thomas, J., dissenting), and, consequently, cannot serve as a basis for striking down a state statute.
And Scalia was in the majority on this decision. Even the Democratic Congressional Black Caucus chastised Harry Reid.
Obviously, Harry Reid is not the brightest of bulbs. Perhaps, he should just keep his mouth shut.
after all atrios' crowing about what a genius this guy supposedly is and how politically canny, it would be nice for escaton to acknowledge his stupid moves as well. I think Reid has a tin ear and has mismanaged and lost the filibuster issue for the Dems, when a more seasoned leader would have made some kind of backroom deal advantageous and face-saving for both parties. Taking it to "nuke" actually shows Reid's weakness. After they do it, what will he have left? Dems sure aren't succeeding in Borking these nominees with the public. Bush will have carte blanche to seat any judge he (and his constituency) want without let or hindrance. Pretty good for a "loser", eh Reid?

Anyways, my lazy butt was going to stop at the all-night market to pick up a few things I'm low on after work but blew it off. Just didn't want to deal with it. I'll swing by early Sunday morning after work when it's not so crowded. And that's about the extent of it.

I'm thinking about going into the part-time exorcism business to make a little money 'under the table' to help make ends meet. I don't guess it matters if you're an atheist or not. All you really need to know is a few bible verses and maybe have some 'holy water' or something around. If you believe you may be possessed or if a close friend or relative may be possessed, I can help. I do house calls, too. I think it'll be a growth industry in the future, especially after the Rapture.

I happen to think Reid "apologizes" after having tagged his targets with the slam. This has long been a Repug tactic Reid is using to advantage.
Gets the "message" out there.
Puppets, you're an idiot, or manipulative, and, either way, well-named.
KG, hang tough. Keep your sensitivity, it's uncomfortable, but that's the way it goes, and, really, the only wau we're motivated to do anything about that which makes us uncomfortable.

I have an empty Windex container I could use to hold the 'holy water.' Of course, I would have to adjust the nozzle from 'spray' to 'mist.'

Well maybe, the best route is a combination of both spray and mist of holy water on the possessed, come to think of it.

While Incog works out whether it's the mist or spray that is more effective, I'm pretty damned tired of being painted, as a homo, as all that is wrong with this country.
I'm now armed. I hate it. I always said that if I had to be armed, I wouldn't want to live in such a society.
Well, it ain't always what you want, is it?
