Folks go to Tijuana for 'non-traditional' cancer treatments (such as laetrile), usually when the usual treaments have failed.

Which closeted blogger has started making frequent references to 'girl-watching' to fend off being outed? [...] We hammered out a good hard pace most of the way, except when it was necessary to slow down through Manhattan Beach and make sure all those California girls playing volleyball were using the proper technique. (They were, but it took a while to decide.)

"is he saying it would have been better to have just switched to fighting the soviets after germany was defeated?"
There were many people who advocated tht, IIRC Patton and/or McArthur. Hazey on that again.
But it sure looks like Bush is trying to stir everything up. He is doing a verbal shove, how long before Putin really shoves back.
I suspect the Russian relationship with Iran is becoming a serious thorn for Bush. He is being road blocked. But then his Sec. of State should have seen that coming, she is supposed to be an expert in cold war issues.

Res,
I doubt laetrile is currently being used, but the clinics that tried it are still there with other treatments that can't or won't pass muster here in the States.
I've a friend who's down there right now, and, I have to admit, she is looking better.

Kristof has noticed that the vatican is plain stupid in their opposition to condoms, and notes the number of aids orphans worldwide. He also gives the church credit for their 3rd world work with the poor and hungry.
With his usual blindness however, he fails to notice that there would be as many hungry and destitute if the church didn't fight so hard against birth control.

Steve McQueen tried laetrile. Of course, it was a last ditch effort.
As it is with most people who have some bucks and can experiment.
Sad that he died so long ago and there is still no sure cure.
This will be the first time that I won't be able to send a card, a present, and when possible, to deliver hugs and kisses to my mom.

I am beginning to wonder about certain groups of people who are now long retired. I am wondering if they are looking at what was likely their voting choice and wishing to hell they had gone the other direction. The 50-60's era of the cold war seems to be coming on line again, piece by piece. Putin is restoring the Soviet Union, China is likely to tell us to flip off anytime now, the mid-east is a bust. The LGF-ers are talking about nuclear options like they are firecrackers and separatism and theocratic rationalization coupled with commiserate nationalism is becoming fact. The stage is being set by both incompetence and design. I am very glad at this point I do not have children.

I was really hoping for a lot more help from them in 2004. I thought self-interest and "I've seen this before and it didn't work out so good" might outweigh narrow-minded and ultimately irrelevant moral considerations. Guess not.

Moose,
That's one of my favorite lines, ever. I was not angry since I came to France. Used after the French murdered the child pages against the rules of war. I've felt for the last five years as if I were not angry since I came to France. We'll be able to undo, at great cost, but possible, much of Bush's evil. But he may manage to screw the environment in ways that we won't be able to repair before they kill us. I hate him and I curse him to ineffectiveness.

There that, and there's what he's doing to the core of what I held dear about America. He dropped his drawers and took a mighty crap on my country's legacy.
Sure, I've never been enough of a star-struck mook to overlook the crappy things the U.S. has done in the name of Manifest Destiny, etc., but I thought we were really going in the direction of making a shining city on the hill.
Mobilizing the entire country to combat fascism and racism (WWII), trying to eliminate racism at home (integrating the Armed Forces, JFK, Johnson's Civil Rights Bill), environmentalism (hell, even Nixon pitched in here).
Then along comes Bush and acts like Hitler on a bender. Crap, I thought we we over waging war in the name of naked power grabs after the Spanish-American War. Sooo.. Angry.. Hulk Smash!
If it weren't for the company gentle souls like you that can still delight in the simple and amazing spectacle of cardinals flitting from branch to branch, I'd probably have ended up on CNN's parade of stupid spectacles by now.
