This is just another way to put an end to stem cell research. People have argued that there is nothing wrong with doing stem cell research on unused embryos, since they will end up being destroyed anyway. Now the wingnuts can claim "No they're not, we can find adoptive parents for them".

I'm considering getting one of those epilepsy helmets, like the girl had in Garden State, to hold my head together or at least control the spatter.
It's because they HAVE NO ANSWER to the concept of donated, unused IVF embryos used in stem-cell research. That's what this is all about. The idea that folks would use the science, have their baby, and then want to help others is beyond the capacity of these dipshits to understand.

Now, if we had an advanced civilization (like in Europe, for example) those extra embryos could be donated for stem cell research but, Noooooooooooooooooooooooo! Here in the United States of Dumbfuckistan, while thousands of children languish if foster "care" until they turn 18 (or die a premature death at the hands of some freak foster "parents"), childless couples can have the opportunity to adopt a test tube of cells. Man, there are moments when I feel the End Times can't get here fast enough.

About the stem cell question, if a fertilized cell is the same thing as a human being, and especially considering the Terri Schiavo stuff, if the cell is kept alive in a cell line or inside a donor hasn't the "life" been kept going? "A blastocyte is not a human being and it is not a person. It is a blastocyte. It may or may not develop into a human being. Large numbers of fertilized eggs never get attached to the uterine wall and just get flushed down the toilet. Shall we hold a funeral for each of them? The poor deluded fundamentalists who know about this even think they will meet brothers and sisters in heaven that they never knew about. And on such irrational and frankly stupid bases (who told them they were going to heaven?), they want to forbid us to cure Alzheimers, and want to force raped women to give birth to the babies of their rapists. It makes a person want to tear hair out, thinking about it."

1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is, my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath.Exodus 35:2. clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?
6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?
7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle- room here?
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16.
Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

Maybe they can sell them for five dollars like they used to sell "pagan babies".
My advice would be to read the bible, especially the "historical" books. They are very entertaining and they provide endless material.
I got one JoHo going with asking him about Elisha cursing the boys who were then torn apart by the bears (she bears if I remember correctly). I asked why it was all right for him to use black magic to kill the boys who were only mocking him for being bald. The guy had a thinning hairline so he might have been a bit touchy about the subject.

Having been throught the infertility wars, this is an attractive option for a lot of people.
There are women who just don't feel complete without experiencing a birth.
Me? I was C-section all the way, never needed the experience, just wanted a child with my husband. But, there are women with legitimate understandable needs.
It is easy to tell infertile couples to adopt older children, but until you have been in their shoes, I don't think anyone should criticize their decisions.

Several folks have mentioned that this is an intentional trick to stop stem cell research, and I tend to agree.
Stem cell research is a personal hobby horse of mine. My grandfather, father, and brother all died of complications of Alzheimers. Maybe stem cell research won't help for that disease, but there are a lot of diseases ravaging families (juvenile diabetes, for example) that clearly WOULD be helped.
I am outraged by this.

Any of you folks ever tried to have a baby? My wife and I have just gone through IVF and happily are expecting a new arrival in November, our first.
We have learned a lot. Embryo "adoption" is available today, and can be a godsend for couples looking to have kids.
What's the problem? Maybe you can argue whether fed $ should be used for its promotion, but I would not, considering the amount of $ wasted in so many other places.
Can you have an abortion of an adopted embryo if the adopted father/husband/boyfriend dumps you? Can you have an abortion if you find out the embryo you accepted was non-caucasian?
Will there be new laws to protect the unborn adopted embryos?
Our goverment is really depressing me lately.

JJF, considering that they are cutting money to WIC and other programs that keep pregnant women and children from starving and sickness, to pay people to have more children would seem to be rather at cross purposes.

What a nightmare. Every day there is some new jaw-droppingly bizarre news.
While it is laudable that some couples may be able to become parents though use of these Infintesimal Americans, the ploy here is obvious. It was trumpeted on CNN yesterday during a discussion between Castle, one of the proponents of the latest stem cell bills, and some hyperventilating guy who was so nuclear over the right to life side that he wouldn't even let Castle talk. This guy burbled on about "adopting" these embryos - (AHA) now it becomes clear what his push was about. Hopefully, couples could decide for themselves whether to dispose of the embryos, donate them for science, or to "put them up for adoption" - but I'm sure that the right to lifers would come up with some reason why such a choice "for science" could be invalidated.
Essentially, what this push would do is immediately hobble any steps forward in legalizing stem cell research on new lines here - they can tie it all up in litigation and endless crap regardless of any bill that passes making research easier.
Example - financing in California for the stem cell research bill they passed is already tied up because of lawsuits by the religious right.
Every day that passes I become more determined to just get the hell out of here.

OK, it's ok to freeze the little swimmers and recievers and all them embros, but ya can't kill 'em.
Using that logic, if these embryos are "sentient human beings with all the inalienable rights afforded to everyone" then why don't we just freeze all the unwanted "born" children until Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Christian want to adopt them?
And don't let it stop there...if you have problem children, children from a divorce (can't decide who gets custody), pregnant teens and preteens, why not freeze them until the Religious Right comes up with a solution?
Oh and since some couples may have a few, uh thousand extra embryos, why not sell them? Think of the money the government can get from this. And the best part is that none of the little "people" has to be aborted. Why in just a few short years, we could over populate the rest of the world(but pay for Iraq!)
