Frank Rich has a great column today, nailing hides to the wall in the BushCo hypocrisy over Newsweek. A taste:
That's how absurdly over-the-top the assault on Newsweek has been. The administration has been so successful at bullying the news media in order to cover up its own fictions and failings in Iraq that it now believes it can get away with pinning some 17 deaths on an errant single sentence in a 10-sentence Periscope item that few noticed until days after its publication. Coming just as the latest CNN/Gallup/USA Today poll finds that only 41 percent of Americans think the war in Iraq is "worth fighting" and only 42 percent think it's going well, this smells like desperation. In its war on the press, this hubristic administration may finally have crossed a bridge too far.

Members of the Houston Bar Association who have practiced before Priscilla Owen have rated her the worst justice of the six justices rated. Justices on the court for fewer than six months were not rated.
Scott A. Brister (422) 36.9 20.7 42.4
Nathan L. Hecht (327) 40.3 17.4 42.3
Wallace B. Jefferson (270) 53.4 29.7 16.9
Harriet O'Neill (334) 55 30.5 14.5
Priscilla R. Owen (350) 39.5 15.2 45.3
Dale Wainwright (316) 48.7 25.7 25.7
Using "Outstanding" percentage minus "Poor" percentage, Owen is at
minus 5.8%, i.e. 5.8% more rated her performance "Poor" than rated her "Outstanding." Owen's rating is a hair worse than Brister (-5.5%); a little worse than Hecht (-2%); and much worse than O'Neill (+40.5%), Jefferson (+36.5%), and Wainwright (+23%).
Alternatively, if you assign 2 points for an "Outstanding" rating, 1 point for an "Acceptable" rating, and 0 points for a "Poor" rating, the average scores of each justice are: O'Neill 1.405, Jefferson 1.365, Wainwright 1.231, Hecht .980, Brister .945, Owen .942.
Owen does particularly badly on the criterion "Is impartial and open-minded with respect to determining the legal issues." There her ratings are:
Outstanding 34.6%
Acceptable 16.6%
Poor 48.8%
Just under half of the respondents rate Owen's impartiality and open-mindedness as "poor." One can certainly see why Dubya has renominated this previously rejected candidate, and why Frist is willing to detonate the nuclear option to put this hack on the federal bench. For more on Owen, see http://www.liberaloasis.com/

Op-Ed columnist Paul Krugman has the disturbing habit of shaping, slicing and selectively citing numbers in a fashion that pleases his acolytes but leaves him open to substantive assaults.
So, Joe Lieberman, you have kissed every ass in the White House from Karl Rove on down to GWB.
You have sucked every cock in the White House from Karl Rove on on down to GWB.
And with every load of GOP semen that sloshed down your throat or splashed on your face, you looked up from your kneeling position, licked your lips and said, "Thank you Sir! May I have another?"
And what did this get you? BIG base closings in Connecticut, massive job loss, and the loss of whatever self respect you had, as well as the loss of respect of everyone who ever thought you were a decent man.

I am holding on to my bet. Bush will be impeached and the second part is a Republican will start the process.
The worse it gets, the more likely Republicans will be run out of office in mass. They tied themselves to the Bush Ideology, allowed themselves to be identified as a unified wall of Bisons against the world. We will see the test put to them, are they of the same mind set, or were they taking advantage of the aura around Bush and co. I suspect they will begin jumping ship when they realize that not only will they not get re-elected, they will likely never even have a shot at dog catcher again. Goodbye prestige, power and having to do real work again. As bad as it is getting, they won't even get a speaking engagement at a 6 year old's tea party. In that case it is because they know that the stuffed bunny and the cabbage patch doll are raging liberals.

I am just waiting for 35% approval ratings for Bush, the fault lines in the Republican party will be easier to see then. "impact on retirement income"
Wow, so i guess you are Krugman's target audience after all. Lemme see if I can explain this, dolt: since retirement income of rich people is not impacted by SS at all, using it as a gauge to judge the fairness of this or that SS plan (including plans that might DOUBLE benefits) is utter garbage. The vast income disparities underlying this principle do not go away with changes to SS, knucklehead, so treating "percentage impact" as a meaningful number is idiotic.

No warren, I am addressing a deceptive comment in a Krugman article a couple of weeks ago, He made "impact on retirement income" the centerpiece of an argument against the fairness of a Bush SS benefit reduction plan. regardless of the merits of bush's plan, stating it in these terms is highly deceptive. poor thersites thinks that rich people get a similar percent of their retirement income from SS as he will, when in fact SS basically represents a rounding error to such people. Nothing Bush says or does will change this, and it is irrelevant to judging the fairness of any SS cut (or as I said any doubling of benefits, which would have the opposite effect.)

That is all my bollocks. You have not and cannot prove that Krugman even said this, or provide the context.

Now that tax cuts have busted the budget, they want us to accept large cuts in Social Security benefits as inevitable. Let's consider the Bush tax cuts and the Bush benefit cuts as a package. Who gains? Who loses?
Suppose you're a full-time Wal-Mart employee, earning $17,000 a year. You probably didn't get any tax cut. But Mr. Bush says, generously, that he won't cut your Social Security benefits.
Suppose you're earning $60,000 a year. On average, Mr. Bush cut taxes for workers like you by about $1,000 per year. But by 2045 the Bush Social Security plan would cut benefits for workers like you by about $6,500 per year. Not a very good deal.
Suppose, finally, that you're making $1 million a year. You received a tax cut worth about $50,000 per year. By 2045 the Bush plan would reduce benefits for people like you by about $9,400 per year. We have a winner!

Ibrahim, unless the amendments to SS are meant to answer the million dollar disparity in income, Krugman's point is either incoherent or deliberately deceptive. Surely krugman realizes that any SS decrease, no matter how it is scaled, will impact rich people very little. Why then is this advanced as a measure of the SS program's fairness, when million dollar income differences would exist regardless of any changes to SS? It has nothing to do with the fairness of SS cuts at all.

My quotation was accurate, and since it did not concern bush's comments but krugman's I don't think the end of the sentence is distinctly important. What is important is Krugman's continued effort to paint irrelevant and static income differences as relevant to a debate about SS and prospective changes to it. How much longer will we let Bush get away with making statements like:
"I made very clear to Congress that the use of federal money, taxpayer's money, to promote science which destroys life in order to save life - I'm against that," Bush said. "Therefore, if the bill does that, I would veto it."

Eli, the point is subtle, so yes it's hair splitting. It depends who you think is playing class warrior, Bush or Krugman. i obviously think it's Krugman, since Bush has never framed the discussion in terms of percentage of income nor would any intelligent discussion of SS benefits concern any such figure, SS being irrelevant to rich people. So Krugman either thinks it IS an useful measure when it isn't, or his point is just that SS is irrelevant to the very rich, which doesnt sound as good as percentage based arguments, and doesnt allow Krugman to turn the tables on Bush.

Nooo... Krugman's point is that Bush is trying to make it sound like the progressive indexing would be targeted at the wealthy, when in fact it would:
A) Have a sizeable impact on the middle class, and
B) Be more than offset by the size of the tax cut the wealthy are getting (and the middle class are *not*).

True - but I was making the point that the trool is even less connected to reality than I had supposed. It really thinks that $60k moves you into some magic wealth level such that SS is meaningless.

When all SS changes would have an impact on the middle class, and tax cuts are an unrelated topic, sorry. this concerns the proportionality of cuts. rich people suffer greater cuts than poor people under Bush'splan. The fact that some people are vastly more wealthy than others does not go away, but as Krugman knows or should know this fact is irrelevant.

Pondering but not sure where to find the answer.
If Bush has been in empire mode, doesn't that make fielding our troops a violation in some sense. Ultimately, a soldier is there to defend country and constitution. Anything else is simply illegal at best. Unless Bush can demonstrate a clear and legitimate danger, is he not placing the soldier in the situation that he or she can refuse any order under the terms of their oath of duty?
