What a clusterf***. Do you think this book really captures what happened in Ohio? I'm not generally a conspiracy theorist, but that was the fishiest state election I've ever seen (and yes, I include FLA in that assessment).
...mother of Jesus can this be true and known but just ignored?

OH. NM. MD. GA. FL. TX. CA. NH.
i have read more than five reports that i trust on the problems in each of the states listed. i've been following this issue online since 2000, with the fervor of a slightly unbalanced person. it's true: a lot of accusations are hard to prove by the Old American legal standard. and yet: the patter, if you care to look for it, isn't so hard to perceive.
we don't have fair, honest, or properly tallied elections anymore. the extent of the problem is national. it's NOTHING like the stories you've heard about WA or old Chicago. it's everything like you've heard about on a sci-fi show.
there are some names to dogpile/google. i won't list them now as i'm not at home and don't have access to my files. but believe it, as dozens of election workers do: american voting is as Stalinist as it could possibly be.
SAIC is a good start. find out who there are, where they come from, and what they do.

I always thought the Ohio numbers dubious.
Ohio (a rust belt state to be sure) only increased her population numbers by 70,000between 2000 and 2004 according to US census - There were a million more votes cast in Ohio in 2004 than in 2000 - these new votes cast split down the middle according to the Ohio totals leaving the repubs on top.
500,000 new republican voters in 2004 than in 2000? This amounts to a small army of people - who saw them? where is the evidence of long lines in republican counties that voted at rates of over 70% of registered voters?
P+T--the statistical community is pretty well convinced that many of those 59K votes were not given by voters.

On election night, I was following a site (Cspan?) that was adding up the tally as it came in. It was neck and neck for the first hour or so, then the votes for Kerry stagnated while those for w continued to accumulate. This was in Kansas. I suppose it could have been the rural vote coming in after the urban vote had been tallied, but it still seems suspicious to me.

I trust that Harry and Nancy will take up Conyers' cause within the next 8 months. I don't think they will have much of a choice, if they want to keep their job. What we need to do is pressure them into doing so. Electronic voting needs to be verifiable. That's so difficult, it may easier to increasing the amount of election workers and processing votes via paper ballots.

OK, they are stealing elections. What do we do?
We can DEMAND that all elections be verifiable. If they insist on using these stupid electronic machines there must be a paper print out of the vote that the voter can check and then deposit in a sealed ballot box, a random, statistically signifcant number of which are counted by hand to ensure the machines are accurate.
Without transparency and verification no election can be considered legitimate.
There should also be a constitutional amendment that says that ALL the votes should be counted and a "intent of the voter" standard should be applied wherever possible.
The problem with all this is that Right is no longer ashamed to admit that they don't believe in "counting all the votes" or having independently verifiable vote counts. The Dems (as usual) have been asleep at the switch for far too long on this issue.

Rep Conyers,
First you proposed a bill to study the reparations due blacks in America. Now, stunningly, you are going to propose a bill that will call for recognition of the Koran. We are expected to recognize as sacred a book that would actively seek to destroy America and that plainly spells out that Christian and Jew are to be killed in speading Islam. I have to wonder what part of patriotism and dedication to American values you were not taught.
But you have prompted me to act. I had a copy of the Koran. It met the end of a propane torch today. I would no longer have it in my home. I should have burnt it a long time ago along with my voter registration card as you people are so out of tocuh with what is needed to save our culture and our Nation that I have to think of alterior motives. Perhaps you have many muslims who vote for you. Have you the nerve to ask, in return for your bill, that they come to the State House and take a pledge to support America and the Holy Bible? I don't think you do.

Many events in Ohio during the election were disturbing, and I don't doubt lots of fraud went on, but we don't know whether the election was stolen. The most recent analysis, esp. with the model Febble developed on dailyKos, suggests that the Edison/Mitofsky explanation for the discrepancies between the exit polls and the tallied vote was actually more on the mark than the US Count Votes people thought.

2006 seems up in the air at this point, but by 2008 the economy (or lack thereof) will decide the outcome
Greenacres has been using low interest rates to pump up the real estate market and keep the economy rolling. Too bad rates of return on income properties have sunk to less than 9%, when five years ago many areas were 14% rates of return.
We are screwed. What the 9% means is that values are incredibly high, far too high for incomes to suppport
We're in for it maybe next year, maybe late this year, and none of us are ready. I was fooled, thought the correction would have happened last summer. Not.

I'm not so worried about the bubble in real estate. Unlike Tech stocks with runaway PE ratios, houses are real. People need homes. At worst it will be regional. The big hurt will come in the ripples through the other sectors. Once it begins it might be a good time to trade an lever up.

I hadn't heard about the Taft drama club thing. I'll try to check it out. Fortunately, I'm closer to El Camino HS -- the one that's always winning the academic decathlons. Two more years and my son will be in high school. He's extremely smart, but prone to be lazy. He just started reading one day when he was 5 while playing a video game and by the time he was in the third grade, was reading at a high school graduate level according to the tests.

Okay, here's a question:
At a certain point, the discrepancy between real votes and fraudulently tallied votes becomes unsustainable (unless Zogby et al. are co-opted as well). I think we were pretty close to the threshold in 2004 - what is the margin of real votes that we need to make an election truly unstealable?

"what is needed to save our culture"
A work completed I presume. This sentiment is always one that keys in with me. Define the culture and I end up thinking that if it can be done succinctly, it is a dying or already dead culture. My culture, as insular as I can be, is the one that moves around me, grows and changes. Diversity is what keeps this culture, for lack of better definition, the American culture alive and dynamic. These people, whoever they may be, are defining themselves as something static and dead in my eyes. And the fact that American culture is transcending into a global one must gall these people to the point of distraction. May they be agitated to the day they take their last breath.

Maybe not. But it is amazing, and disgusting, that even the most obvious steps to make elections more trasparent and credible haven't been taken, much less seriously discussed:
Getting rid of obviously partisan election supervisors, like Blackwell and the loathesome Harris;
And
Making sure that all precincts have the same access to plentiful and working equipment.
IMHO these come even before paper ballots and so on. Until these reforms happen nobody has any right to complain about conspiracy theories, because nobody has done anything to give anyone any confidence that they're serious about totally fair elections.

It's certainly not ignorance -- if you put it in your DVD player, and it doesn't play, then it just doesn't work with your player. That's entirely possible, as I've seen it, myself (the Daewoo I mentioned previously was one that I still own, but no longer use, precisely because of this). The DVD itself is the same format as any DVD you would buy -- only the manufacturing process differs, so it's not clear to me why some players have problems with the discs, but they do, indeed.

The PC route is not so bad, unless your PC isn't set up to recognize a standard DVD, and the automagically start up the already-installed DVD player software. One drag about watching on a PC -- PC monitors have better resolution than TVs, so the PC monitor can point up the flaws in digital video much better than TVs can (ironically, perhaps).

Of course they're stupid but so are most of the American people.
I'm feeling bitter these days with the realization that the war on terror and the war in Iraq is just going to be replaced by anger over immigration.
I'm serious. That's all most of the slightly right of center to conservative people I know can talk about.
When I try to make it fucking clear about how much money we're wasting in Iraq their response is "but Mexicans can get drivers licenses now".

They're own hubris
And do they have hubris in spades or what?
Their key weakeness is what has been their key strength: the religious right.
In pandering to the fundamentalists they have gone way out of the mainstream first with the Schiavo case and now with the stem cell issue.
Both of those issues hit way too close to home for far too many people for the crazy fringe that runs the Republican agenda to be ignored by even the most wilfully ignorant middle American.

Serious question. What speech made them raise the terror level. I'm not even joking about this.
Cast thy mind into the dark backward and abysm of time...
It wasn't a specific speech. Remember how reports from Pakistan emerged a week prior to the convention saying that a fake warning would be given during the convention to raise the terror levels? And then this actually happened? And then how every single media punditoid shrugged their shoulders and said, "quite a coincidence!"
It was a plan conceived in advance, they got caught and did it anyway, and this was considered OK, all good fun.

Thersites
Sir, you taunt me with the sublimeness of it dumbitude.
Do the spiders truly eat Chicago? One of my favorite things as a young pre-Toonscribe was to keep a running list of all the cities eaten by various creatures -- Reptilicus: Copenhagen; the Black Scorpion: Mexico City; the Giant Behemoth: New York; some fucking giant squid I can't remember the name of: San Francisco -- ah, the list went on and on. I was hoping to give Chicago its second mention on the list after the grasshoppers got it in that Peter Graves movie. There was another movie where Chicago was destroyed by giant slabs (not a fast-moving flick -- and doesn't count on the list because a slab is not a creature), but I can't remember the title -- think Richard Denner (or Denning?) played the scientist in that one. I grow old. I think the mind is failing.

This purple spider movie raises some interesting questions about Chicago municipal government.
First, what procedures does one follow to conduct multi-dimensional-portal experiments in the downtown area? Does this go through the University? (cd maybe could answer this.) What's the permit process like? I am currently led to believe that this is the entire basis of the Chicago economy, opening portals to evil spider dimensions. What's the profit motive there, though? Baffling.
Also, can one really walk into a handy downtown Chicago armaments shop and purchase an "arsenal" with only a driver's license and cash? Given the city's lamentable history of gangsterism, they might want to close this loophole. Just a suggestion.

Here's a strange little detail to discuss: Remember on election night, around eight or nine Eastern (approximately), when the White House did an "unprecedented" thing by allowing the media into the WH for an impromtu news conference?
Doesn't it seem like the vast majority of people who would've seen Chimpy's plea to the nation would likely have voted (were there really millions of registered voters who were sitting around, debating whether or not to vote, then saw Chimp make his plea and rushed to the polls?)?
Strange...

Thersites,
Use it to your advantage in future arguments. You know that point when you've basically said all you can say and nothing's left but the insults? Just say, "Young lady/man, may I remind you that, at a certain time in your life, you peed on me."
You really can't come back from that one.

I wonder about labeling the republican party as fascist. Certainly there are parallels to fascism. There is the rampant corporatism and the addiction to symbols (such as car magnets). But I wonder if it is not more accurate to compare the republicans and particularly the neocons to the mid twentieth century communist Soviets. To put it another way, the republican party of the 21st century is a Stalinist party. It is a party that demands loyalty to the party that supercedes loyalty to the nation.
And it is a revolutionary party. Today on the Majority Report show on Air America, Janeane Gerafolo (sp?)wondered aloud why Grover Norquist was an admirer of the Bolshevik revolution. She offered a very complicated tinfoil explanation of why that was true. But I think the explanation is very simple. Grover Norquist is a revolutionary who wants to overthrow liberal democracy. He is a soulmate to and admirer of the absolutism of the Bolsheviks. He is looking to establish the same degree of party absolutism in America in the early 21st century as Stalin was able to establish in Russia in the late 1940s and 50s.
This is what we are up against, the Busheviks of the 21st century have replaced the Bolsheviks of the 20th century. It has damn little to do with Christianity per se, but Christianity is being used as a wedge tool to accomplish their goals. These folks are playing for keeps. There is a reason that they are demonizing liberals. They are trying to overthrow the age of reason that liberalism was built upon.
They are the bastard children of the military industrial complex. Ike was a good soldier and true patriot for warning us about them, the only hope we have is to overturn their rotting scheme to turn us into a nation that cares for nothing but our precious military expenditures. When they blow shit up in Iran, we should take names and numbers and keep track of the media. It's our job to never give these assholes a minute to gloat about their own imagined power. It may soon be our job to bring them down if they continue to shit on our constitutional laws.

Another Bruce- Krugman made exactly that point in the introduction to The Great Unraveling, by way of Kissinger's doctoral dissertation. I heard him talk about it last year on his book tour prior to the election, and he was not optimistic (and sadly correct). He stressed the point that these guys are very motivated to retain power, no longer simply because of the spoils or the power itself, but because as soon as somebody else gets control, all the shit they've done and been hiding is going to start surfacing.
Personally, I have no belief they plan to surrender power and will do more and more to hold on to it. Bush, Frist, Delay, and so on are replaceable - the system they have entrenched will go on with new figureheads. It's just a big whack-a-mole game till a sizeable chunk of the populace decides to start participating in the government shaping their lives. That's the sad part- revolutionary powers beget more revolution eventually, and they're rarely peaceful.

Jeffco, the challenge is to try to describe what's happening without trying to sound like a nutcase. It's not easy, because they really do control not only the voting machines, but a lot of the election commissions as well. While I understand that we (as liberals that believe in liberal democracy) got complacent and allowed a certain extent of this to happen, I am really amazed at the extent of planning they did to get to this place, it was a long-planned stealth attack on liberalism that they would not dare fight in the light of the day.
So here is our challenge, and I think we should be smart enough to handle it. How do we foil the rigged voting calculations? I don't think that we should do it by rigging the vote in our favor, although that is one way of doing it. I think we find a way of catching their own hand in the cookie jar, and cutting it off so they have to wipe with their right hand.

I like white perch the best. They get really meaty on the sides. Of course, you have to descale them which is kinda messy with scales flying everywhere, then you take your filleting knife and take it right down the bone on both sides. The fillets go in a large bowl covered to the top with water and then frozen. The gut pile goes in the garden.

opened face crab sandwich, $1.69. yummm
The old boat house burned down and the new one is just not the same.

pike (when it's big enough
I think pike are what we call gar here. They seem too fishy tasting to me. Maybe they're different there. They get huge here, up to 150 lbs.

Maybe, I'm not enough of a fisherguy to know. The pike are called "northern" up in Minnesota-Wisconsin. So I don't know if that means that they are a northern fish. They are a long bodied snake like fish with lots of sharp teeth that put up a hell of a fight and generally have to be caught at 9 pounds or more to be worthwhile eating.

think we find a way of catching their own hand in the cookie jar, and cutting it off so they have to wipe with their right hand.
No, despite the vast evidence to the contrary, I choose to continue to believe that lying, cheating, stealing, and generally screwing over everyone you perceive as not your own (and not a few of your own as well) comes to its own reward. No point in our slouching down that road as well. Unless one is willing to become them, there is no beating them at their own game.
It's also hard to talk about the general public going along with all this without sounding elitist or somehow removed from them. That's another talent of the amoral; they will use the language of Christianity or Nascar or Toby Keith if it gets them a way in to somebody's head without a single concern that they could not give a rat's ass about any of it. No point in trying to copy that either; every leftie that tries to be other than who he or she is jumps right into the 'phony' stereotype. I still have the dents from slapping my forehead at every boneheaded gaffe Kerry and Gore made along those lines.
Leaving aside engaging the nonvoters, I do think there is a vast middle that is happy to be swayed and led- this is a republic after all. Clinton could connect with people without being phony- that's not because he's a centrist, it's because he's genuine, warts and all. Bush may be a true sunovabich, but he must honestly believe he's God's gift to the US of A, and that counts for a lot with a lot of people.
When the left generates an articulate and unabashed liberal who is both politically and media savvy, we'll have a fighting chance. Dean is almost that, but he's too old school, i.e., bad on TV. There were people ready to hit the streets in 00 and 04, but what can you do when your own leader rolls over? Kick him out and find somebody that won't screw us over when it counts. Wish I knew somebody like that.

I hate hearing these stories, up in Seattle we just this last winter lost a place called "Charlie's in Shilshole" A great basic cheap place with good food and brew and a deck that you watched the sun setting over the Puget Sound and on the Olympic Mountains from. It's almost impossible to find waterfront relaxation spots that you don't have to worry about the size of your wallet.

Although I haven't fished in a loooong time (being vegetarian), I used to enjoy it a great deal. Mostly lake fishing for northern pike and catfish, but some trout fishing as well. The pike were always the most fun because of the fight. I suspect sitting out with a hookless line would be at least 80% as enjoyable.
I've nothing against fishing for food, but since I wouldn't be doing that the whole catch and release thing just wouldn't work for me.

I think the worst thing about the pike was when it was hooked deep. We had a set of curvy locking surgical pliers we'd use, but even with those sometimes those pointy little teeth would take a chunk of flesh. Hard to blame them though.

Hell that brings back memories, I remember as a nine year old kid I had about a seven pound northern that nearly pulled me off the boat. My dad made me pull a hook out of the back of its throat. He held its mouth open for me so it wouldn't bite off my hand.
And fuck yeah, fish feel pain. Worms and bacterial cells feel pain. It's a basic motivator of life.
I remember the first (and only) time I boiled a lobster. I had heard that they don't feel pain because they have no nerve endings. Guess what, the second I put the poor sucker in the pot he wanted out. Did you know that lobsters have soulful eyes that can penetrate your heart? The lil' fucker's soulful eyes ruined my dinner. I deserved at least that.

Not straight from the sea, but if you waited even a day, yes, the taste got stronger. My mom makes a really good fish soup out of pike. Though many people like it fried even when it's not like a second from the water.

Another Bruce- yeah, I know you weren't advocating criminal malevolence, and I too have those fantasies of taping the whole crew being perp-walked down Pennsylvania Avenue and watching it over and over. (I only recently taped over election night '92!) But I think we are in a losing proposition reacting against the culmination of a thirty-year effort by the rightwing forces to dominate society. They have captured the minds, if not the hearts, of mainstream America, even if temporarily.
We have got to stop playing catch-up and start getting out in front of the curve. I don't know whether the Dems are up to that, but it's been bugger all getting a viable third party going, so for now that's what we've got to work with. Reid is at least showing some signs of life, and Dean seems to be following through on taking it to them state by state.
The point is, they are not the great and powerful Oz- or maybe the point is they are, in fact, nearly all humbugs. Don't forget, they have failed in most all of their social agenda, however much they threaten to push large segments of the population back into closets, kitchens, alleyways, or other positions of subservience. There is a backlash to be sure, but the kids today for the most part are uninterested in many of the conservative concerns. One of the talking heads the other day was suggesting that the fact that gay marriage was ever controversial will seem incredible in a few decades, much as the separate water fountains look to us today (well, most of anyway). Here's hoping.

It's not like it's falling apart. The place is solid. The appraiser said the place should have been appraised at half a million, and that's huge for Shreveport. The heirs orginally asked for $380,000 but didn't want to fool with it and didn't care and settled for $250,000. It's impossible to describe what an amazing place it is.

We have got to stop playing catch-up and start getting out in front of the curve.
I agree with this wholeheartedly, and I wouldn't even be particularly worried about these humbugs if it weren't for two things. 1. The Voting machines and 2. The media.
My first suggestion is that there has to be a way to demonstrate fraud *if it exists* The problem is that there is no known non-circumstantial way to prove that it does or it doesn't exist. Part of the problem is that large segments of our population don't bother to vote at all. That 45% of the population that doesn't vote affects the possibility for electoral fraud in a profound way. If you have total control of the process, you can always claim that there was more or less turnout.
Some have suggested that the only way to prove electoral fraud is to have the numbers prove to be so awful that they have to be false. But if you can manipulate the numbers, you can always make the margins "less awful". Some have suggested that the voting machines have been rigged in such a way that the republicans will almost always win the close races. In fact, Bush won 9 of the 10 most closely contested races in the 2004 elections. Even thought statisticians can prove this to be a near statistical impossibility, it is still not proof of vote fraud.
At this point, this is the only thing that makes sense to me. Talk about vote fraud, to your neighbors, friends and family, and be ready to predict how it will happen and call them on it when it does. Be ready for them to regard you as insane. But be calm and rational when you explain what is going on. And don't change your tune until things get better.
As for the media, get ready to replace them by talking to your neighbors, friends and family, they are mostly worthless to us now.

AS long as we're talking conspiracy theories, mine is that there was a systematic and orchestrated effort for republican voters to seek out exit pollsters and report that they had voted for Kerry to throw off the results. Maybe even for pre-election polls as well.
Sounds crazy and something that pervasive could not be kept quiet; but honestly, I have not really heard any more plausible explanations.
Most of us have agreed that our candidate and our campaign sucked; even though we worked our asses off.
It's easy to say let's learn from that and don't repeat the mistakes, but, meanwhile, the Fourth Reich takes the country into the dumper. My dream is that we had a mulligan back to June, 2004 with a chance to redo.

Two words people > Paper ballot. and without there is NO such FREEDOM
Without it, nobody knows anything and there isn't any proof of anything.
And remember, it was that bitch Hillary Clinton who tried the hardest to keep that paper ballot from being a reality in 2004.
Hillary didn't want a paper ballot until 2006, and because Hillary fought so hard against such a measure - you Dems may NEVER see a paper ballot ever.
This is why there is NO WAY that I'm ever going to vote for that bitch Hillary.
The party of Clinton is every bit as corrupt as party of Bush and a vote for Hillary is same as a vote for Bush. Both presidents LIED to us about this war and both them are still lying to us about this war.

I worked hard in Oregon to get Kerry elected (Dean would have been my choice). Many progressives here in Portland get angry with me when I won't scream that the election was stolen with them. With all of the evidence being gathered it is probably true that the election was stolen. However, even the reliable exit polls that our side keeps pointing to says that Kerry defeated the worst and most dangerous president this nation has ever seen by a mere 3%. That is a giganctic disgrace for the whole nation. The election could not have been stolen if the margin was 15 or 20% which it damn well should have been.
That tells me that this fucked up nation deserves the wrath of the world. We deserve the idiot that we have now as our leader and we deserve to lose our position as Urtle the turtle of the world.
After the neo-cons completely destroy the economy maybe, just maybe, people will then wake up and we'll usher in a progressive era in the next decade and we'll all get a new deal.
I am all for demanding verifiable election results but until our fellow brain dead citizens wake up it is not going to happen.
There is a saying in the Arab world, "Before things can get better they will have to get a lot worse." This fat happy nation living on a sea of unsustainable debt and driving SUV's while bitching about the cost of gas needs to get kicked real hard in the nuts to wake up. That day is fast approaching.
