GravatarSince there's no T this is not OT, just recycled from previous wilting thread

Judge says considering the charges facing him, Saddam Hussein's morale is at an all time low.

BushCo. might try to use the "Saddam trial" as a 2006 campaign push.

"Descision in the Desert 2006"

Graphic testimony about how Saddam kills his own people (BTW we kill his people too) and how the world is a safer place. Of course all testimony will be in secret for "security" reasons and we'll never hear Saddam talk about his meetings with Rumsfeld and other US military and business reps.

GravatarThat tortoise photo reminds me of something I'd read about Ottoman palaces; they used to put candles on the backs of tortoises to illuminate nighttime garden parties. The slow-moving turtles amidst the plants created a changing play of shadows which visitors found charming.

i don't think the detainees desecrated their own Q'urans.
I think they would consider them defiled by contact with (USer) infidels' urine, or dogs, or whatsoever expedient the guards were using that day to break the detainees' spirit, and their sacredness would be voided, and so they would no longer have to respect the books which had been defiled, and would have disposed of them any way they could...

i dunno; of course...i'm just guessin'

IIRC, the only acceptable method of destruction is burning. Irony.

But it does bug the shit outta me that professional patriots/jingoists subject the flag to every sort of indignity while proclaiming to love it. You would think that if they really loved it as much as they proclaim they'd take 3 minutes to find out how to care for it properly.

Gravatari see you're point, woody. i'm just not sure it's the most likely scenario. it's more likely that the prison staff did it i think. or it's possible that they were forced to desecrate them by the staff.

GravatarWhich media and politcal idiots are going to be the first to excuse-away the Gitmo5 Koran incidents?

i just watched last nite's countdown segment re the gitmo abuse and found barry mccaffrey's comments an interesting development. he specifically mentioned rumsfeld and steve cambone -- 'the civilian leadership' -- in the pentagon as responsible for the early policies of torture and they need to be held accountable. i don't recall him in the past making such pointed comments, but maybe he has. but to me it indicates a real unease in the pentagon -- because mccaffrey isn't going to say something like that without a fair number of the military leadership's quiet endorsement.

they are near a crisis point in the military, so this could be a real interesting thing to watch develop.

GravatarGood stuff to rant on today. Donald Rumsfeld is criticising China, in the absence of obvious enemies, for acquiring weapons. That from the secretary of defense of the nation that deploys the B2, is building the F22 Raptor, is designing a new generation of destroyers and attack submarines and space weapons, is fighting an unprovoked war halfway around the world and whose military budget exceeds that of the next ten combined. Not much moral capital there, seems to me.

Re Deep Throat: a distinct pattern has emerged, in which malfeasance (Nixonian criminality, W's service record, Koran desecration) is dealt with by the right by concentrated fire on meta-malfeasance (Felt, Rather, Newsweek), real or imagined, as if it is more of an issue than the original allegation. Rather than defend the meta-malfeasance, we should anticipate this strategy and stay focussed on the malfeasance itself. They haven't proved us wrong yet when we have, but they've sure diverted a lot of our attention, and a significant portion of the electorate. We shouldn't let them do that. Perhaps the media will tire of being manipulated and gratuitously attacked someday.

GravatarOh hell, people: it is all bullshit and should be treated as such. They lied about desacrating the Koran. Surprize, it is not like they have not lied about other things.

TRUTH: this administration is the biggest bunch of wankers and liars I can imagine and the news media who enable them are a little bit lower down the totem pole. At this moment they are right above child molesters and below serial rapists in credibility.

GravatarRiverbend's take on the Quran abuse:

Detainees coming back after weeks or months in prison talk of being forced to eat pork, not being allowed to pray, being exposed to dogs, having Islam insulted and generally being treated like animals trapped in a small cage. At the end of the day, it's not about words or holy books or pork or dogs or any of that. It's about what these things symbolize on a personal level. It is infuriating to see objects that we hold sacred degraded and debased by foreigners who felt the need to travel thousands of kilometers to do this. That's not to say that all troops disrespect Islam- some of them seem to genuinely want to understand our beliefs. It does seem like the people in charge have decided to make degradation and humiliation a policy.

By doing such things, this war is taken to another level- it is no longer a war against terror or terrorists- it is, quite simply, a war against Islam and even secular Muslims are being forced to take sides.

Intelligence Sees Terrorists in Iran

GravatarMorning, rational people.

It's my turn to blogwhore

Gravatar(Sorry, I kind of liked this and it was the end of the thread)

Fake Dispatch from Iraq
John Burns, NYTimes-Picyune.

Baghdad: This is my last report from the front lines of America's war on terror. I have decided to take Mrs. Burns back to the United States, buy a cottage in upstate New York, and try to find my integrity - I must have lost it somewhere. . .

The truth about Iraq is that we do not know what is happening. We pretend that we do, but that is a lie. The truths we can speak to are these: We are trapped inside a small area that is heavily fortified called the Green Zone. It is far too dangerous to try to do anything like real reporting, so we hang on the press releases from the DOD and the White House. We report these talking points without pointing out the obvious flaws, if we did not do so; we might have to do our own reporting and that would be dangerous.

In truth, this place has become hell on earth for any human being. Bombs go off daily, seemingly at random. You cannot drive anywhere, because you may be blown up. We cannot get a perspective on the new Iraqi government because, although they are a government, they have to acquiesce to whatever whims the US can dictate. There is no choice.

As far as anyone can tell, there is a full-blown civil war that started about a year ago and is strengthening. The Shia hate the Sunni and the Kurds hate them both and vice-versa. Due to some stupid WH talking point, we have to refer to this as "Sectarian Violence." Right. A rose by any other name . . .

So, this is it: I am not going to even try to pretend anymore. This is a quaqmire without precedent and we will never be able to graciously extricate ourselves or even to exculpate our smallest actions. The truth is that the death toll from the Viet Nam war may be looked at with envy in the future.

GravatarAlso worth noting in the Gitmo report: Stepping on Korans.

Shoes are a sign if disrespect in many ME cultures. Being touched by a shoe degrades anything. So having a GI kick or step on a Koran is a very deep insult.

Recall the people in Baghdad hitting the fallen Saddam statute with their shoes.

GravatarIntelligence Sees Terrorists in Iran

Our Intelligence sees terrorists in ham sandwiches, for god's sake.

GravatarIs CNN actually "reporting" that?

Yep. And I'm sure I read it somewhere but will google and see what I find.

It is somewhat plausible that they may have flushed already desecrated Korans.

GravatarTwo years ago at the Air Force Academy the christian soldiers raped and pillaged. All we know for sure is it's not in the news any more. Now, if you aren't bathed in the blood a jesus the american taliban cadets, faculty and even the superintendent's staff will harass, abuse and hold you back.

We are coming the end of Clinton's military and will have to rely on bush's army of god. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Air Force Academy Chief Admits School Bias
"As a commander, I know I have problems in my cadet wing," Lt. Gen. John Rosa said at a meeting of the Anti-Defamation League's executive committee. "I have issues in my staff, and I have issues in my faculty — and that's my whole organization."
...
Rosa said the problem is "something that keeps me awake at night."

"If everything goes well, it's probably going to take six years to fix it," he added.

Another easy one. It takes fresh crab (or canned, if Madison doesn't have a meat department with fresh seafood), 2 packages of softened cream cheese, some sliced black olives, and cocktail sauce.

Spread the cream cheese on a plate, sprinkle chunks of crabs liberally and evenly, spread the olives with the crabs, top with a fairly thin layer of cocktail sauce.

Any others? I can get enough for any future parties too!

Gravatarthat the detainees were typically trying to stage some form of protest when they mishandled the Quran

Apart from my immediate sarcastic sneer, if this is true, then you have all the evidence in the world that this activity formed a part of a locally used manual, a manual which had to have been prepared at headquarters by high level military 'intelligence' personnel.

Gravatarbest post for today.

President Bush has strayed over the line separating “those who play footsies with dictators” and “those who actively aid their crimes against humanity.”

He needs to be impeached.

Evidence: Bush Speech to the U.N. Tuesday, September 21, 2004; 11:44 AM

Bush: “Both the American Declaration of Independence and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclaim the equal value and dignity of every human life…That dignity is dishonored by oppression, corruption, tyranny, bigotry, terrorism and all violence against the innocent…”

MSNBC/Washington Post Article Saturday, June 4, 2005

“Uzbek security forces opened fire on crowds in Andijan that included anti-government demonstrators, Islamic militants and prisoners freed in a jail break.”

“U.S. officials are concerned that U.S.-trained military units might have participated in the Uzbekistan government’s suppression of unrest in Andijan on May 13…”

“An investigation would most likely show that Uzbekistan authorities ‘used a level of force that was completely unjustified and they killed many innocent civilians,‘ said Sen. John E. Sununu (R-N.H.)…Based on reports of U.S. Embassy officials there who gathered eyewitness accounts, Sununu believes between 500 to 1,000 people were killed in the unrest and that Uzbekistan Special Forces and regular security forces were involved” in the killings “which (Republican Senator Lindsey) Graham called a ‘massacre.’”

“When you look at the totality of what Uzbekistan has been doing, they’ve been a very valuable partner and ally in the global war on terror…”

President Bush at his Presidential Inauguration January 20,2004 :

“So it is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world.”

GravatarStuffed Gouda: - Get a nice, fat red wax covered Gouda cheese. Cut a disc of wax from the top - set aside. Very carefully, remove the interior cheese to about 1/2 of the wax. Mash the cheese with a package of softened neufchatel cheese, a dab of sour cream, pepper, finely chopped green onion tops, couple of dashes of paprika. Mix together till relatively smooth, return to Gouda. Sprinkle a little more paprika on top. Serve with interesting crackers.

GravatarMove the rosebush.

The rosebush has moved on.

It's an ex-rosebush.

I really want to yell: "Hey, fucker, get your wisteria out of my life!"

It was a fine rosebush, really.

I don't get these Republicans - they like commiting the war crimes, but they don't want to be called war criminals.

Things would be a lot easier to deal with if they just took a little pride in their work. I take pride in my work, why won't they cross that hurdle and truly own what they do so well?

GravatarThanks GWPDA!!

GravatarIt's an ex-rosebush.

That sucks.

Since the wisteria is beautiful you might simply want to enjoy it as is, but if you feel really spiteful you could round-up the parts that have wandered onto your property.

Be warned though - round-up may only slow the sucker down, and it will look like crap after you spray it.

Here are some of my roses.

GravatarOT, of course, but--

Assistance, please, if y'all would:

Any thoughts on which satellite radio system is best? Best to support? Are there any receivers which can get both?

Thnks for any input.

GravatarHa. Some additional history of some different "youthful indescretion" from Henry. Nice to know the old boy has been consistent over the years. (from Chicago Tribune sports...nice title, and I don't think THIS is why he would be in purgatory)

Bending rules to cut down a giant
When he had to guard George Mikan in an NCAA game, Georgetown's Henry Hyde just improvised

By Rudolph Bush
Tribune staff reporter
Published June 4, 2005
WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde believes that if anything in his life has earned him a place in purgatory, it's the way he guarded George Mikan in 1943.

Mikan was DePaul's 6-foot-10-inch center, able to score at will and destined to change the way basketball would be played.

Hyde was a 6-3 freshman backup for Georgetown, whose collegiate basketball career would be far overshadowed by his 30 years in Congress.

At the time, Mikan was the nation's dominant college player, able to control entire games in ways that even today's giants cannot. He was so powerful and such a tremendous public draw that when he joined the NBA, the marquee at Madison Square Garden famously advertised a game as "Geo. Mikan vs. Knicks."

Mikan died Wednesday, leaving a legacy as the sport's most important player in the first half of the 20th Century, the man who caused basketball to establish a shot clock, extend the lane and banish goaltending.

But in Madison Square Garden on March 25, 1943, playing for the NCAA East championship before 14,085 fans, it was Hyde who got the better of the big man. Hyde held him to a single point in the second half of a game Georgetown won.

"There wasn't much you could do to guard him except push the rules," the Illinois Republican recalled.

In an early version of hack-a-Shaq, Hyde hip-checked Mikan every time the big man touched the ball, knocking him off his famous hook shot and sending him to the line, where he managed to make only one free throw...

GravatarWhere can I find some hard copy of Bush's statement yesterday when he said " in my line of work, you have to repeat yourself to get your message out. when you repeat yourself, that's how you get your propaganda out.." It sounds like a W classic.

GravatarI saw "Bay" Buchanan on C-Span last night.

Looks like her brother Pat in drag - NOT an attractive women (as if any on the right are).

Same old BS - railing against illegal immigrants in front of an audience of her fellow fascists. That entire family is SO one-note.

I guess they call her "Bay" because that's what she does whenever she sees a full moon. Eeeecccch!
