The really sad thing is that the Bush Sr. mythos has eclipsed a remarkably good book (in which the Bush story was a relatively a small part). Flyboys is much more thoughtful and sensitive than most of the popular WW2 histories that have come out over the past decade. The author spends alot of time examining the dehumanizing qualities of war with particular focus on how the Pacific was, on both sides, a racial conflict (some of the propaganda parallels are striking). He writes at length on American atrocities in the Phillipines at the turn of the century and makes direct comparisons between that behaviour and the Japanese in China.
Damn shame that's all been thrown aside for, "Rah! Rah! Bush 41."

But would the Constitutional option have made any change in the "blue slip" custom? None. Would it have changed the rule that allows a single Senator to derail proceedings, at least temporarily? No. And, most important, would it have changed the ability of the Senate majority to bottle up nominations in committee? Not a bit.

OK,we all heard about how bush was using air forces before the war got started ,right?
Well ,a href="http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?
i=20050613&s=scahill>"The Nation has some intresting details.
It was a huge air assault: Approximately 100 US and British planes flew from Kuwait into Iraqi airspace. At least seven types of aircraft were part of this massive operation, including US F-15 Strike Eagles and Royal Air Force Tornado ground-attack planes. They dropped precision-guided munitions on Saddam Hussein's major western air-defense facility, clearing the path for Special Forces helicopters that lay in wait in Jordan. Earlier attacks had been carried out against Iraqi command and control centers, radar detection systems, Revolutionary Guard units, communication centers and mobile air-defense systems. The Pentagon's goal was clear: Destroy Iraq's ability to resist. This was war.
"But there was a catch: The war hadn't started yet, at least not officially. This was September 2002--a month before Congress had voted to give President Bush the authority he used to invade Iraq, two months before the United Nations brought the matter to a vote and more than six months before "shock and awe" officially began.
THis officially pisses me off. Here is an arrogant son of a bitchusing war powers that do not belong to him.THis ,IMO ,is blatanly illegal.Congress had not given the authority to strike and kill like the article is describing.Where does this freeking asshole get off, starting war without approval?

My CNN horror-for-the-day occured right before Fly Boy; Novak--in his new featurette The Novak Zone (I kid you not)--interviewed Michael Deaver on the enduring historical significance of Reagan's "Tear down this wall" speech. Pure GOP propaganda with no dissenting comment.
FOX had a one hour special on that speech a few years ago--it's apparently legend in GOP minds. My favorite part was Gorbachev saying he didn't remember the speech--did FOX have a video? Cut to Gorby and translator watching the video: "Now I remember--he had a good presentation with his actors' skills, but we'd heard these things many times before." (paraphrased)
In other words, nobody in Moscow at the time cared.

That's a lot less than I had to do last weekend, when I had to deal with the fact that my neighbor to the back is moving his fence three feet closer to my house, which little bit of territory happened to contain all my tomato plants, which were already 4 feet high, this being sunny California. Had to dig up half the yard and move about ten tons of dirt in order to move those things without killing them. What a project! Many would say it's not worth it, but those things are my babies! According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_H._W._Bush), June 12th is the birthday of Chowderhead, Sr. (a.k.a. "41").
Ergo, I assume they are just plugging tab a (seasonally-appropriate filler material) into slot b (whoring themselves to the party-in-control).
It is easier to do so rather than re-establish their journalistic credentials by exposing Junior in ANY of his evolving 'gates. Also, with the end of the Jackson trial nigh upon us, they need backlist filler material to make up for either the upcoming dearth of "all molesters, all the time" or the commitment of 110% of their resources to covering the trial's end.
(btw, I read somewhere once that Senior's WWII plane crash killed his crewmen, who, as I recall, either 'didn't have to die' or were 'allowed to die, with a wink and a nod.' Someone might want to check my memory via the interwebs. It might simply be rumor. But, then again...)

at 09:55 PM What's With CNN and "A Flyboy's Story"?
Last summer, "CNN Presents" aired, "A Flyboy's Story: George Bush in World War II," over and over again. Suddenly, last weekend, CNN dragged A Flyboy's Story out again and aired it two times. Today, six days later, CNN's airing it again, three times. Got that? Three times. Three hours in one day.
What's with the glorification of George H.W. Bush's military service? Why has CNN aired this show five times in seven days?

"GHWB's Avenger was shot down and it was the resposibility of each crew man to get himself out of his seat and bail out."
Actually it is the duty of the pilot to ensure, to the best of his ability, that his crew has evacuated BEFORE he does.
FYI, there were comments from other aircraft crew, who testified in no uncertain terms that he bailed out without first ascertaining the condition of his two man crew. These vets were in aircraft flying aft of his position.
They also spoke of disciplinary action, including court martial, that were quickly skuttled.
As to the Flyboy bit on CNN, simple, Commander Codpiece is in another low spot so they are airing the story as if the father's "glory" could rub off on junior.
The Bush family have been scum, they are scum and they ever will be scum.

bullshit.
From George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography --- by Webster G. Tarpley & Anton Chaitkin
"Chester Mierzejewski, another member of Bush's squadron,..
hinted that Bush might have abandoned his two crewmembers."
Wonder what the story with Mierzejewski is.
The Avenger apparently took a direct hit. Bush said bail out. If the crew couldn't get out there was nothing Bush could do about it. Go look at a picture of an Avenger. Any suggestion that Bush could have landed an Avenger without power and wings burning on the ocean sounds like total crap to me.
cj51 |
06.05.05 - 10:19 am | #
cj51 - you're wrong. 'Without power' makes no difference, the aircraft will glide. You don't need an engine to ditch. No-one has ever said the wings were burning. The Avenger was DESIGNED to be ditched, had a life-raft, etc. Poppy bailed out pronto and left his crew to die.
Bobo |
06.05.05 - 2:08 pm | #
Mierzejewski, who is also a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, told the "New York Post" that he saw "a puff of smoke" come out of Bush's plane and quickly dissipate. He asserted that after that there was no more smoke visible, that Bush's "plane was never on fire" and that "no smoke came out of his cockpit when he opened his canopy to bail out." Mierzejewski stated that only one man ever got out of the Barbara II, and that was Bush himself. "I was hoping I would see some other parachutes. I never did. I saw the plane go down. I knew the guys were still in it. It was a helpless feeling."
Bobo |

Re: "bobski's" comment
Quite right. Unlike a naturally stable airframe like a Piper or a Cessna, Avenger's wouldn't fly themselves. An Avenger pilot would know exactly what would happen to that aircraft left to itself -- one big aileron roll followed by a dive straight down to the drink. The pilot leaves last.

Power makes a huge difference if you happen to be trying to climb out in an aircraft that weighs 7-8 tons and just got hit by anti-aircraft fire. They don't glide too well.
Bush thought the wings were on fire and that's where the fuel tanks are.
"Poppy bailed out pronto";
Bush stayed in the plane after it was hit, released his bombs (that hit the target) and stayed with the plane until it was over the ocean, and then said bail out with a few seconds left till the plane hit the water. And GHWB was supposed to do what else? Do roll call or something? Do any of you guys fly? Ever had any kind of emergency as PIC in a 172 or anything?
I can barely imagine what GHWB went thru. Of all the things you can criticize GHWB for, I would lay off the Avenger story. So theres one guy Mierzejewski whose recollection doesn't match everybody else, so Mierzejewski must be correct?

"Brand Bush" is damaged goods.
Corporate America has a lot invested in this name- and it could take decades to develop a new brand-- so, better to start the damage control now (in time for 2008.)
A Bush, Sr death would actually be a coup for the restore-the-Bush-name campaign-- it would give media a chance to recycle all of that Reagan hagiography from last summer. ("Bush- a name that Reagan trusted...") -- not to mention the inevitable documentaries featuring the Bush clan at their Kennedy-esque family compound in Maine-- AND featuring all of those other up-and-coming Bush boys.
BUSH- "a name YOU can trust." "Even CLINTON seems to like the old man!"
It would serve America well to have "the rest of the story" ready to air- because you KNOW that CNN is ready when George the elder croaks.
Greenwalt? Moore? Write the scripts, assemble the footage. End the Bush juggernaut before the next wave gathers.

He was not a hero, he was a fucking coward and he killed the other person in the front of the plane with him. He could have stayed with the plane and ditched it in the ocean, thus saving both lives.
