The Young America's Foundation, in case you didn't know, is a bastion of awesomeness. They're doing a field training seminar here - it's still going on, but I thought I should slip out to get some ink on it.

First, here's the "Freedom's Source" document that comes in the hardcover folder they give everyone. (did you even know folders can come in hardcover?) The text:

"It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given
us freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given
us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who
has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given
us the right to a fair trial.

It is the soldier, who salutes the flag... who serves
under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the
flag... who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Were it not for the brave... there would be no
land of the free."

GravatarAnother thread not discussing Issue X.

What's Issue X?

Gravatarsome Conservatives.

Brent Scowcroft, national security adviser under Presidents Gerald Ford and George Bush Sr., said “Don’t attack Saddam. An attack on Iraq at this time would seriously jeopardize, if not destroy, the global counter terrorist campaign we have undertaken.”

President Bush’s former bitch-boy, David Frum,

“They have made common cause with the left-wing and Islamist antiwar movements in this country and in Europe. They deny and excuse terror. They espouse a potentially self-fulfilling defeatism. They publicize wild conspiracy theories. And some of them explicitly yearn for the victory of their nation’s enemies.”

emphasis mine in Scowcrofts' remarks, even tho it's really kind of obvious to a thinking person.

GravatarG'morning. Interesting news from Florida: the Bushies seem less than supportive of Katherine "Cruella" Harris's run for Senate.

Will Katherine Harris blink? ...That's what a lot of prominent Florida Republicans are asking as they see an extraordinary political drama emerging: the Bush family political machine trying to derail the U.S. Senate campaign of the Republican superstar who helped put George W. Bush in the White House.

Seems they've decided she's too polarizing and couldn't beat Bill Nelson in the general election.

Issue X is secretly the older brother of Speed Issue, whom everyone believes died in a bio-diesel racing accident.

"There it goes, there goes Speed Issue, it's a demon on wheels!"

They're planning a mass Social Security statement shredding on the Capitol Steps this week, ostensibly as a "nonpartisan" group.

GravatarRove is a putz

GravatarIs Nelson unopposed in the primary? If so, then Dems sould cross over and vote for Harris over any other GOP candidate in the GOP primary. Then hand the bitch a crushing defeat in the General. And then Atrios can have the video of her eating shit/concession on the home page.

Nah. Kitty knows what would happen to her on a long dark road one night if she ever got any ideas like that.

GravatarThe weekend surprise today is the Mad Cow report. You really ought to look into this, people. I think it's much bigger than it seems.

GravatarThe booze keeps the ghosts away.

You mean like the ghosts that haunted Richard III.

"My conscience hath a thousand several tongues,
And every tongue brings in a several tale,
And every tale condemns me for a villain"

GravatarThey're planning a mass Social Security statement shredding on the Capitol Steps this week,

That could intimidate some old people. I think we need a constitutional amendment banning the shredding of SS statements.

GravatarBring home the troops - send in the chickenhawks!

Indeed. Bet she knows where half the bodies are are buried.

GravatarYoung Republicans: I used to hate Democrats when I was a teenager, too. What can I say? I learned that the world was full of sexism and classism as I experienced it by myself without my dad/mom to protect me. Basically I grew up and was forced to open my eyes. I started hanging out with other types of people. Although I went to a religious small college, I continued growing and learning. I can't point to any one person or thing that made me aware, though. I think it was the first Gulf War and angry and stupid as shit words from the Right that pushed me to the Dems finally. Their words will hang them eventually...young folks have brains; they just have to use them.

GravatarIs Nelson unopposed in the primary? If so, then Dems sould cross over and vote for Harris over any other GOP candidate in the GOP primary. Then hand the bitch a crushing defeat in the General. And then Atrios can have the video of her eating shit/concession on the home page.

Florida has a closed primary. People would have to change their voter registration. And I will never register as a republican, ever.

GravatarWell, the left should organize a larger counter-demonstration to the one the Young Repugs are planning.

Bush doesn't want to let go of SS "reform". In fact, the Dallas paper was praising his flexibility for dropping private accounts from his spiel.

Let's not let them get away with this...

GravatarMarket

C'mon along, Moonbats, we're going to market. At the market
anything that can be grown is for sale. Near the bottom of the hill on the way out of town, before you reach the swamps that give Muskegon its name, stands The Farmer's Market. People come from all over the area on Saturday and display their wares for sale. Let's go.
The first stop has to be for corn. You examine it as it laid
out in the stalls. It is still damp with the morning dew from when it was picked at first light. As you look over each ear carefully you imagine that aroma which will burst forth in the kitchen as you husk them. A scent reminiscent of the earth itself. The kernels filling each ear and so sweet it needs nothing more than a little salt to reach peak flavor. Satisfied with the dozen you have selected, you move on down the row.
It was here in one of the stands that I found my first leeks. They looked like green onions only thicker. I bought a big bunch home and my wife said, "What are you going to do with those?" I didn't know. After searching through the stack of cookbooks we keep in the kitchen I found a recipe for Cream of Leek soup. It was excellent. It may be more fun to find the unusual, but it is more satisfying to see the tomato man. Every year, since I was a child, he has occupied the same corner booth. He sells tomatoes, eggs, and fresh poultry.
The tomatoes are as big as softballs and firm to the touch.
Buying the big boxes of them you realize that a few hours on the
window sill will give them just the perfect texture. You imagine
how they will glisten when you cut them into thick slices. While
we're there, we might pick up a dozen fresh brown eggs and maybe a roasting chicken for Sunday dinner.
The blueberry lady is next. Big, luscious, dark blue berries
by the quart or the box. She offers a sample and the firm berries
burst into sweetness and the juice tries to trickle out of the
corner of your mouth. Five pounds should be enough for the day.
That should be sufficient for a great pie and several bowls for
everyone sprinkled with just a little sugar.
Peaches are everywhere, but we have to find just the right
ones. Those which are not bruised and have a certain texture like
that of a rubber ball. Firm, but able to be pressed in just a
little. As you walk along you see them sold by the bushel, peck,
and box. You find the ones that are right and place them in the
bags with the tomatoes.
The major purchases done, it is time to just buy the
whimsical. Big stalks of celery are two for a dollar and we pick up a couple. Suddenly I get the urge to make DWD's Famous Seven Pepper Chili. What an idea! I start selecting. Banana peppers, green peppers, cayenne peppers, cherry peppers, chili peppers: that should be enough. What do you mean where are the other two? Oh, I get it. I use black pepper and white pepper to season it.
Loading the bags in the car, we head back for a feast

Yes, I think Mad Cow has infected our current administration.

I believe that quite a few women in Sudan know the answer to that question.

GravatarThat could intimidate some old people. I think we need a constitutional amendment banning the shredding of SS statements.
Hecate

But but but SS statements are just worthless sheets of paper like those Treasury securities that back up SS.

Why isn't the CRNC staging a demonstration to shred THOSE worthless sheets of paper?

GravatarSorry, we have closed primaries in Florida. Dems for Dems and Repugs for Repugs only. That's why independent candidates/voters are screwed in my state.
Oh, and the repug legislature got rid of runoffs for the primaries also. Only the big money big names have a shot anymore. Our little bastion of blue in S.Fl. is outnumbered by the podunks north of us.

Gravatar Well, the left should organize a larger counter-demonstration to the one the Young Repugs are planning.

Bush doesn't want to let go of SS "reform". In fact, the Dallas paper was praising his flexibility for dropping private accounts from his spiel.

Any change in the polls?

Anyone really think a rally by "Young Republicans" is going to produce a groundswell of support for Bush among the elderly? You know, the people who actually vote in mid-term elections?

Desperate flailing. We can stay the course. We've gotten this far in the face of Bush's orchestrated "town meetings." A "demonstration" by Young Republicans is not a "new front."

It's pathetic.

Amazing. It's about the timeline for war presented in the Woodward book.

GravatarDWD,

That was lovely. The farmers' market is one of life's great pleasures. I always want some of everything. The farmers' market at Dupont Circle on Sundays gives out samples of everything. Pieces of peach; sliced cukes of three or four different kinds; pesto made from garlic scapes -- who needs breakfast when you can just walk through the farmers' market?

GravatarYou're soooo glib.

GravatarRMJ - well, that's all true.. I don't think it will matter. Social Security is still the Third Rail.

I just hate it when the Hitler Youth gear up and go on a rampage.

Gravatar You're soooo glib.

Hey, you haven't read the scientific papers about the chemical reactions and interdependencies of glibness, okay? I have.

Gravatar I just hate it when the Hitler Youth gear up and go on a rampage.

It's good for them to remind people that they're out there, and what the Republicans really stand for.

GravatarFlorida has a closed primary. People would have to change their voter registration. And I will never register as a republican, ever.

Yup. I know several people who have registered as Repugs simply because a lot of smaller races in Florida are decided at the Repug primary level, and if you're not a registered Repug you have zero say in those contests.

GravatarCoingate keeps getting weirder. Now the Toledo Blade reports that a lot of those coins Noe said went missing aren't missing after all -- just a matter of poor accounting, you see.

But Storeim, the guy Noe tried to finger for the not-really-missing missing coins wrap says it was a ruse by Noe to deflect heat from himself:

It is difficult to imagine any other explanation for the fact that Noe and his associates claim to have determined the coins to be 'missing' in their year-end audit of NPL [last summer], only to have them 'found' when an independent audit was conducted eleven months later.

But then, Noe still accuses Storeim of skimming from the coin fund and, curiously, Storeim's home was burgled last week even while under wrap as a crime scene.

Does anyone have a fucking clue what might really be going on?
.
.

GravatarAmazing. It's about the timeline for war presented in the Woodward book.
pgk

He's brilliant! I could only read half of it now, because I have to go out right now, but I can't wait to read the rest!!

i love the howler.

GravatarThanks, Tena.

I've started MaglaGulag Publishers Page here.

Gravatar RMJ - well, that's all true.. I don't think it will matter. Social Security is still the Third Rail.

True, but, as Eli said, always good to know where the fringe is and what it's up to.

This little outing the by Hitlerjugend will be the icing on the cake of the demise of Bush's "reform." Looked at that way, it's almost enjoyable.

Gravatarportia: "My conscience hath a thousand several tongues, And every tongue brings in a several tale,
And every tale condemns me for a villain

Wonderful quote. I'm reading Richard III now (well, trying to. Its the end of the busy season for me but will finish around July 1st). I can't get through a single scene without thinking of W. The similarities are eerie.

GravatarFor those of you keeping track - and for you farmers market types - the first honeydew picking here at the Casa de los Salamanquesas will take place Tuesday.

GravatarRmj - from your lips to God's ear -

I hope you're right - it makes me nervous that Bush is still pushing for SS "reform."

but then, I'm already nervous - about the stock market crashing, the economy going bust, another war, etc. etc. etc.

GravatarMorning Tena....Actually, the Repubs haven't dropped privatization of SS. The MSM, as usual has it wrong. The bill being marked up in the House Committee would give all current SS contributions to employees to put in their private accounts. They just wouldn't touch past contributions that are in government bonds. Effect the same; they just kill SS more slowly.

GravatarCarter - Tell it to the Dallas Morning News - the editor praises Bush's "flexibility" for dropping private accounts in this morning's paper online.

Gravatar And incidentally, here's the solution to energy problems -- all wrapped up in one single presentation.

Wow. and I thought my P-series was lookin' ratty.

GravatarI strongly urge all Atriots in Florida to reregister as Repubs & vote for Harris in the primary. This would be the best way to ensure a Nelson win & we need to use every trick in the book to get back the Senate. Also, it would put the fraudelent 2000 Florida vote count back in the news & be a great catalyst for the 2006 congressional & the 2008 presidential election.

C'mon, do your patriotic duty.

GravatarNow is the summer of our sweet content,
Made o'er-cast winter by these Tudor clouds.
And I that am not shaped for black-faced war,
I that am rudely cast and want true majesty,
Am forced to fight,
To set sweet England free.
I pray to Heaven we fare well,
And all who fight us go to Hell.

Richard III, ala The Black Adder

GravatarMedia Notes:

1) Saw the Air America interview with Klein (smear book on Hillary) below. Loved it. Conason, who I saw speak when he was in Philly 2 years ago, tore Klein a new one. Conason's approach is exactly how progressives should respond to right wing attacks. He must have called him a liar at least half a dozen times.

2)Watched Leher news hour yesterday, which had Tom Olliphant (the Boston Globe cartoonist) as the liberal & a conservative as the guest weekly commentators. Regarding the Rove controversy: Olliphant was pathetic, saying Rove was wrong & it weakened the ability of moderates, from both parties, to find a common solution to the Iraq War. The conservative just kept repeating the mime that Rove was referring to liberal groups like Move On & Moore. This was a great opportunity to go after Rove/Bush by saying it was a lie, was divisive by pitting Americans against each other & thus hurting the War effort (that FDR or George Washington would never have done anything like this), that Rove should resign to maintain the harmony of the American people against the terrorists, that Rove evaded serving in Nam & that he should now redeem himself by going to fight in Iraq or, at least, getting his kids to go.
