I cross ocean,
poor and broke,
Take bus,
see employment folk.
Nice man treat me
good in there,
Say I need to
see welfare.
Welfare say,
"You come no more,
We send cash
right to your door."
Welfare checks,
they make you wealthy,
NHS it keep you healthy
By and by,
I got plenty money,
Thanks to you,
British dummy.
Write to friends
in motherland,
Tell them 'come
fast as you can.'
They come in turbans
and Ford trucks,
I buy big house
with welfare bucks
They come here,
we live together,
More welfare checks,
it gets better!
Fourteen families,
they moving in,
But neighbour's patience wearing thin.
Finally, white guy
moves away,
Now I buy his house,
and then I say,
"Find more aliens
for house to rent."
And in the yard
I put a tent.
Send for family
they just trash,
But they, too,
draw the welfare cash!
Everything is very good,
And soon we
own the neighbourhood.
We have hobby
it's called breeding,
Welfare pay
for baby feeding.
Kids need dentist?
Wife need pills?
We get free!
We got no bills!
Britain crazy!
He pay all year,
To keep welfare
running here.
We think U.K.
darn good place!
Too darn good for
the white man race.
If they no like us,
they can scram,
Got lots of room in
Pakistan.
I know that we in American have our own problems: but this poem was sent by my friend in the UK. But the immigration problems in Europe, and there are a great deal of them: will someday have an impact here.
I explained that in AMerica we have less of a problem because our national identity is that of immigrants. But we should not underestimate the racial hatred brewing in Europe.

ANKARA (AFP) - At least four people were killed and 14 injured when a blast -- caused possibly by a young female suicide bomber -- ripped through a minibus in a resort on Turkey's Aegean coast popular with foreign tourists, officials said.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned Saturday's blast in Kusadasi as a "terrorist attack" without putting the blame on a specific group, while local officials said the police were considering the possibility of a suicide bombing or a parcel bomb left in the vehicle.
"We are looking into all possibilities. Among them is the possibility of a girl, aged 16 or 17, acting as a suicide bomber," Kisadasi sub-governor Ali Baris told Anatolia news agency. "There is no definite conclusion yet."

My crackpot theory is that this story is now being fueled by a growing desire among a broad spectrum of Americans from the barely interested Joe Sixpack to 'serious' people in the elite from bussiness to intellegence, to mete out punnishment on the arechetects of the disaster which is Iraq.
I have always believed that Nixons downfall was enabled by the loss in Vietnam. Absent that loss, and a loss it was, I think Watergate would have blown over.
This sort of meta-cultural analysis is I admit in many ways silly and worthless. Unproveable.
At the start of this round I posted that perhaps the tide had turned. Meaning the tide in the media culture and the elites which was the ground upon which Bush's bizzare administration was built.
I've had moments of total doubt over the last two weeks but it now seems apparant that this thing has gone over some tipping point.

If you want a chuckle, look at the new Harry Potter book - J.K. Rowling jabs W right on page 1 - sentence #2. Well, at least I interpret it that way:
"[The Prime Minister] was waiting for a call from the President of a far distant country, and between wondering when the wretched man would telephone, and trying to suppress unpleasant memories of what had been a very long, tiring and difficult week, there was not much space in his head for anything else."

Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper, facing a jail term in the Valerie Plame leak investigation, never asked White House political adviser Karl Rove to release him from a pledge of confidentiality because Cooper's attorney believed that any conversation between the two men could be construed as obstruction of justice.

From SG
Columbus – A member of the Franklin County election board said Friday that prosecutors are investigating whether a GOP political consultant tried to bribe the board’s director to buy voting equipment made by his client, Diebold Inc.
The director, Matthew Damschroder, has told prosecutors that the consultant, Pat Gallina, came to his office in early 2004, offering him $10,000.
“Pat Gallina came into my office at the Board of Elections and said, ‘I’m here to give you $10,000. Who should I direct it to?’ ” Damschroder recalled. “I said, ‘Certainly not to me. But I’m sure the Franklin County Republican Party would appreciate a voluntary donation. That was my first mistake.”

From huffpo:
as Russert will be devoting his show to what the MTP website calls “The CIA Leak” (interesting choice of words; I would think “The White House Leak” or “Karl Rove Can’t Keep A Secret” might be more appropriate). Russert’s guests include Matt Cooper, fresh off his grand jury testimony, RNC chair (and Rove’s former deputy) Ken Mehlman, former Clinton Chief of Staff, John Podesta... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/th...ging-
_4229.html
“The CIA Leak”
Sounds like russert is getting a head start on pushing rat-wing talking points. Should be completely disgusting.
Watch how russert will make sure mehlman isn't interrupted and both russert and mehlmen won't let Podesta finish a sentence.

I told Kevin Drum I'd inherited Charlie from him...
I knew there was a reason I never visit your blog!
On Monday, two Time correspondents, upset about Pearlstine's decision to release Cooper's notes, showed top company officials e-mails from sources who said they would now have trouble trusting the magazine. The tense meeting in the Washington bureau with Pearlstine, Time Inc. Editorial Director John Huey and Managing Editor Jim Kelly was "angry" and filled with "bile," said several participants who requested anonymity because the meeting was confidential.
One reporter, Mark Thompson, circulated copies of an e-mail from a woman who deals regularly with whistle-blowers, saying that she would not turn over a confidential source to Time and that the magazine had slid to the bottom of her media list. He told Pearlstine the Cooper decision had "made our job a heck of a lot tougher." Another, Brian Bennett, displayed a similar note from a source with the name blacked out.
OK, they're fucking w/ CNNTimeWarner now. Expect Time to make their case clear that this was about nat'l security not whistleblowing, if they ever want to get another scoop.

wtfwjd? -- And with good reason. That email from Karl about his conversation with Cooper said that Cooper called him to give him a "heads up" on some welfare reform piece he was doing.
Now I can see a reporter calling someone mentioned in an article to ask for a reaction pre going into print. But giving Karl Rove a heads up so the can get the Wurlitzer fired up? I wouldn't trust any communication between Cooper and Rove after reading that.

Kelly said "the biggest issue" was the argument that "I can't count on the company to stand behind me when I make a promise to a potential source." But he said Pearlstine argued that the Plame case was unique and that "there are many instances in which the editor in chief would stand behind you and defy the Supreme Court," even if that meant paying fines and going to jail.

Yet the machinery will grind on--the current swarm being painted as just one of those minor foul-ups in the otherwise perfect system.
That's what being a Watergate baby taught me: What's goes down, bubbles back up. No one drains the swamp on the Potomac.

I used to me smart. I had a degree. I understood the news. But these days it all seems to be written in some nonsense language and I sometimes don't know what the fuck is happening. Help me out here.
This morning's AP story says Rove told Steven Hadley about the conversation. Hadley was then Deputy National Security advisor and is now the boss in that office. This means Rove told a high ranking official in the White House what he had done. Therefore the the National Security advisor is up shit creek and the White House lied when they said Rove had nothing to do with this.
Surely this is terrible news for the White House (hence the weekend disclosure, attempting to minimize news impact).
And yet the story concludes with Mehlman saying this ends the story, other R's laughing at Democrats with egg on their faces, and Pelosi saying there should "still" be an investigation, as if we were wrong and now just need to save face.
What gives? Is this good news or bad?

My head whirls from the spin, too.
On another thread, as a public service, semper fubar provided the following handy summary that I thought worth re-posting:
Karl didn't do anything wrong.
And even if he did, Valerie Plame wasn't a spy.
And even if she was, she wasn't undercover.
And even if she was, everyone knew who she was anyway.
And even if they didn't, Wilson lied.
And even if he didn't, he was a partisan Democrat.
And even if he wasn't, his report wasn't important to anyone outside the Wilson household.
And even if it was, Judy Miller is in jail.

I read that. It was poorly written -- assuming (ahem) they weren't intending to slant it. The email and "not falling for the bait" simply means he didn't start answering Wilson's charges (which might look like defensiveness and Rovey don't play that). And second the "warning thing is so much crap. If he was warning anything it was that they were planning to slime Wilson, so don't bother to write about him...

I just came back from cruising over at Billmon and came away with a similar thought to wtfwjd?'s. Putting something in an email is a way to build a paper trail and CYA. It doesn't mean that the email is truthful or accurate, as it often can serve the role of creating a record that is difficult to dispute. If there is a discrepancy between Rove's and Cooper's emails, I'd be more inclined to believe Cooper because he had no reason to lie and Rove did.

DWD: re: racial hatred
in BOTH the intra- and international contexts, is a usually surrogate for economic strife; it is top-down, most often, too: those whose 'good life' seems threatened ALWAYS look to the those occupying social or economic rungs below theirs for scapegoats, even though it is ALWAYS those above them who are actually fucking them...
the US in particular, but the West (including most of Europe), have exploited the poorest, most vulnerable regions witnin thier spheres of influence for so long that the folks living in those 'developed' societies beleive themselves entitled to continued enjoyment of the fruits (goods and materials) they have been able to win, so far, mainly through military and economic intimidation and terror.
As somebody said the other day, once those you have been intimidating are able to possess the same weaposn with which you have been intimidating and exploiting them, the grounds for hegemony change...

cs, i don't think that the "email from Rove to Hadley" sounds that plausible. i think it sounds like an attempt to cover one's tracks. wtf does hadley care about welfare reform? why would Rove need to tell hadley about this conversation at all?
if it is real/true, the only explanation is that hadley & rove were co-conspirators in coordinating the wilson smear.
i'm not suggesting rove would be so stupid as to submit a forged after-the-fact email to a prosecutor. he is smart enough to know that an email could be discovered & to word it innocuously enough to sound neutral.
in other words, i have no fucking idea. but it just sounds unlikely.

Uncle Smokes--with Eli leading the charge, we marvel at the bad dialogue, execrable acting, and special effects that were created in a high school drama class for $10. We spend a lot of time cheering for the creatures, eating popcorn and consuming beverages of choice. It's like MST3K live and in color

We all know the WH doesn't like to roll out a new "product" untill fall, but I see no slowdown of propaganda this summer. I'm profoundly tired of all the shitstorms this WH keeps kicking up. Talk about scandal fatigue.

Well, if this were an investigation, I'm sure that Fitzgerald's office could also release documents that shatter the administrations pathetic little attempts at exculpation. But it isn't, it's a propoganda operation aimed at the press and public. Whores like Russert are only too glad to go along with it. I suspect that Fitzgerald is laughing at it. It took these guys a week to get to here, and their story is still changing every day.

I also share my birthday with Jim Morrison.
One time, when I was a little kid, we were driving through the desert, and I saw the Doors tour bus wrecked on the side of the road. As we passed, I felt the life spirit of the lead singer pass into me . . .
Oh, wait a minute, I think I actually saw that in a movie.

today is the 60th Aniversary of the first, man-made atomic explosion, over the northern White Sands, between Alamogordo and Socorro NM.
for a number of years, i have celebrated it as, also, the anniversary of my conception; for i was born more or less 280 days later (April 20, 1946--at 4:20 am).
My dad was home on leave from the Pacific where he had been shepherding submarines around for a couple of years, and he and mother were in Santa Fe that whole week, which fact i use to buttress my claim to having been among The First Atomic Zygotes™.
which, before it occurs to anyone else, is, indeed, a GREAT name for a band...

This Plame Affair is absolutely riveting, particularly Miller. There are some people here who stand to become real losers and Miller's one of them.
Last week I wondered if Miller wasn't CIA herself, and on the pro-war side of what appears to be, or have been, an internecine policy war at CIA. After reading the E&P articles below, I tend to think of her now as self-involved and ambitious.
You have to wonder if her refusal to testify has more to do with trying to save what's left of her career. Of course, things are seldom as they appear to be in affairs of this sort, so she could well be CIA, or simply and groupie dupe.

Had dinner last night with a childhood friend who is in serious credit card debt trouble.

I offered a few, what I'm sure she thought were lame suggestions, credit couseling, etc.

Last week I wondered if Miller wasn't CIA herself, and on the pro-war side of what appears to be, or have been, an internecine policy war at CIA. After reading the E&P articles below, I tend to think of her now as self-involved and ambitious.
Does anybody have a detailed timeline/bio of Miller?
In 1977 she joined the paper’s Washington Bureau, where she covered the securities industry, Congress, politics, foreign affairs, particularly the Middle East and nuclear proliferation issues. In 1983, she became the first woman to be named chief of The Times' bureau in Cairo, Egypt, responsible for covering the Arab world. In 1986, she became the correspondent in Paris, traveling throughout Europe and North Africa. In 1987 and 1988, she returned to Washington as the Washington Bureau's news editor and deputy bureau chief.
In May, 1989, she became co-coordinator of a newly created unit to enhance the paper’s coverage of radio, television, advertising, and publishing. In October, 1990, she was named special correspondent to the Persian Gulf crisis, and after that, The Times' Sunday Magazine's special correspondent.
Before joining The Times, Ms. Miller was Washington bureau chief of The Progressive, a monthly, was a regular contributor to National Public Radio, and wrote articles for publications.
Born in New York City, Ms. Miller grew up in Miami and Los Angeles, where she graduated from Hollywood High School. She attended Ohio State University, Barnard College and the Institute of European Studies at the University of Brussels. She has a bachelor's degree from Barnard and a masters from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

Playing Devils Advocate::::::::
The more I listen to the desperate claims being made by the neo's I have tried to consider the issues at hand when this whole thing got started.
Let's look at the facts.
1. Downing street memo states that the Bush administration was trying to 'fix' the facts to support an invasion. Suggesting that the administration was eager to find proof and whatever it could to help justify it's claims.
2. Articles out before the war report that Cheney made periodic, almost daily appearances at CIA HQ in Langley where agents there, who spoke on condition of anonymity, complained that Cheney was putting pressure on them to procure evidence in a manner that suggested that if they can't find it, insinuate it or make it up or something.
3. Wilson is sent by the CIA to investigate the claims of Saddam's attempts to purchase yellowcake fissionable material from Niger due to his close ties to the government and other people in the know around that region plus his experience in Iraq itself.
It seems quite plausible to me at this point that Cheney put so much pressure on the CIA to come up with something that it sent Wilson, perhaps after his wife Valarie, suggested or provided it as a solution as to whom to send. The CIA, knowing Wilson would find nothing cause they knew there was nothing there, felt that it would help them get Cheney off their backs. It fails. But during the process of briefing Wilson on the trip they let him know perhaps in chit chat, that Cheney was pressuring them to come up with proof. This might have led to Wilson's assumption that Cheney knew of the trip first hand rather than perhaps Cheney not really caring who went, or at all, just as long as they found something.
Wilson's suggestions that he felt the VP was behind the trip match up with his comments that the administration was cooking the books on the intel. That the press rode the story on the Cheney connection when there was little to be had there forced the admin into defensive mode where it followed suit trying to cover for Cheney by saying he had nothing to do with it and that it was all due to Wilson's wife, and why would Wilson's wife have anything to do with it? Oh, because she is a high ranking member of the CIA's weapons anti-proliferation division who is up for further promotion to the highest levels of the company and her suggestions carry weight.
That Libby might have been in on the deal to protect his butt buddy seems too likely to let pass.
I don't know if this relates to anything but this is how I'm starting to see things. That these idiots didn't care to think they were breaking the law, they were protecting the VP, and we know these people are about maintaining the image of the presidency and the VP. It's all about not saying your sorry, and making everyone there look flawless.
Sallyh;
She and her husband have an interesting financial relationship. They are not wealthy by any stretch. He pays all bills, house is paid for, he pays everything else other than groceries. She is responsible for groceries, Christmas, (they have 5 grown kids and 3 grandkids), birthday gifts, graduation gifts, etc. She knows that her spending is a sickness and she mentioned a debtor anony program. She and husband have separate checking accounts, she has a good job, but is 52 years old and realizes now that she will have to work until she's 90 to pay off bills.
The husband is very good with money and will be horrified if she tells him.
