I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

GravatarI hate Bobo's world.

GravatarNice thing to wake up to.

GravatarWhat kind of day care center has a twenty five year old male as director?

Gravatarsounds like growing up with the Bushes.

GravatarThe former director of the day care centers, Joshua Palin, 25, has been charged with molesting 10 children, some of them during what investigators said were twisted games of Truth or Dare. He is the son of the affiliated church's pastor.

Well, of course he is.

Jesus.

GravatarYou can pick your freinds...

you can pick your nose...

but you can't pick your freind's nose.

Unless the day-care employees force you to, I guess.

Unfortunately, you know this will be more fodder for the Dr. Laura "don't have them unless you're willing to raise them 24/7" crowd who hate day care anyway.

One that's faith-based!

GravatarPastor's son molesting children?

Just goes to show that a christian upbringing is probably the worst thing you can do to a child.

As in, Please God let me survive this hell?

GravatarAs in, Please God let me survive this hell?

More like, "we have faith that you won't molest the children TOO badly..."

GravatarPicking each other's noses...what would Jesus say?
Since they took Howard Stern off the air in Florida, I guess the Day Care Center Director has run out of fun ideas for the kids to do.

GravatarIt is Big Dog's fault, ya know!

GravatarA third employee, Claudia Foster, was accused in the DCF report of making children eat worms, smell each other's feet and pick each other's noses during Truth or Dare.

Assistant State Attorney Rebecca Zima said she does not intend to prosecute Foster on those allegations, saying the actions did not rise to the level of criminal conduct. There was no answer Friday at Foster's telephone number.

yeah, nothing criminal about making kids eat worms. all in a day's work at the Christian day care center.

feed these fuckers to the Sharks, and televise it live.

GravatarI don't know, this one has the air of one of those 80's mass-psychosis witch hunts about it.

The "They made us eat worms, and pick each other's noses, and they molested us, too!" thing just sounds...off. The first two sound like something a child would make up if they were encouraged to tell a "gross" story, and that makes the last part feel like it was tacked on by interrogators.

Especially since these kids have parents who send them to Christian day care. How crazy do those parents have to be? If they can believe in sea monsters and the Flood despite all evidence, they can certainly believe in day care directors who go bump in the night.

GravatarNotice things like this always seem to happen in red states?

GravatarThis is ... what words are there? I hate these people, and that's not a good feeling to have. I should pity them, but they want to run my life, and I can't pity them.

GravatarDoes Bobo know about this feature?

Gravatarall in a day's work at the Christian day care center.

I'm waiting to hear about kids having to nail each other to crosses.

and on that note, a full morning/afternoon of errands awaits.

GravatarI want to see how this plays out. There have been other accusations about day cares in the south that I suspect was more a result of the heated fantasies of a prosecutor that of what actually happened. That said, there's no reason to believe that Bobo's World isn't the new Sodom and Gemorrah.

GravatarUnfortunately, you know this will be more fodder for the Dr. Laura "don't have them unless you're willing to raise them 24/7" crowd who hate day care anyway.
Pere Ubu

Only if you are white and middle class. All the rest of the lazy good for nothings need to go out and work and where they put their kids is nobody's business. Certainly not the state's, unless the kids die suffocating in a car because you can't afford day care. Or are left unattended for long stretches because your babysitter crapped out on you and your boss at your minimum wage job told you you would be fired if you missed one more day. Fucking wankers.

GravatarYeah, well, at least Murka isn't the stupidest nation in the world.

Canada is. /snark

Gravatar"Or are left unattended for long stretches because your babysitter crapped out on you and your boss at your minimum wage job told you you would be fired if you."

Murika, highest standard of living in the world.

GravatarA third employee, Claudia Foster, was accused in the DCF report of making children eat worms, smell each other's feet and pick each other's noses during Truth or Dare.

Nothing to worry about. This is standard chimp grooming behavior.

GravatarLet's please give these people the smallest benefit of the doubt. I was a young teenager in Los Angeles when the "McMartin Preschool" scandal started. Check wikipedia if you don't know the whole story.

Raymond Buckey and his mother spent years in jail and on trial because investigators were over zealous. I don't believe there was a single conviction after 2 mistrials and almost 10 years of legal battles.

If these new accusations are true, string them up, but let's not pre-judge them based on the alledged crimes.

GravatarUnfortunately, you know this will be more fodder for the Dr. Laura "don't have them unless you're willing to raise them 24/7" crowd who hate day care anyway.

Yet red-state parents who work 2 to 5 jobs between them in order to survive continue to vote Republican and think Rick Santorum is a genius. Go figure.

Gravatarnot to sound like I am judging anyone, but this child-care provider sounds like one of chimpy's "values voters" to me

accordin' to world o' crap, dr. slutinger is gonna have her own one woman stage show. knew y'all would be happy to hear that.

GravatarPretty disgusting.

GravatarSorry to bust folks bubbles, but having studied the day care witch hunt of the 80s, this doesn't sound entirely on the level. In most real abuse cases, the molester separates out a vulnerable child from the herd (multiple times perhaps), not performing sex shows in front of a group of kids. Having multiple adults involved in the sex acts and multiple kids as witnesses is another red flag that we might be seeing a witch hunt.

Yes, there are caretakers who abuse the children in their charge. They should be locked away forever. But there are also a great many innocent activities that could trigger all sorts of suspicions in someone with a bent mind. And children are so eager to please adults in a position of authority that questioning them about these matters must be done very carefully. It IS possible to convince a child that they were abused when nothing happened. Read No Crueler Tyrannies by Dorothy Rabinowitz.

I hope to hell for the kid's sakes that the investigators didn't screw this one up.

GravatarAll the rest of the lazy good for nothings need to go out and work and where they put their kids is nobody's business.

So, according to Laura the Unloved, proles shouldn't breed unless they're willing to spend every waking moment (and then some) with their offspring, yet they are also simultaneously required to go out and work instead of being laze parasites leeching off the poor harried taxpayer... when there's not a min-wage job to be found that will provide day care, and a job that will either provide on-site day care or enable a parent to pay for such wouldn't be hiring a mere prole anyway.

Heads I win, tails you lose. Motto of the Repugs.

No disrespect meant -- but WOW, if I made a comment about a woman being inaappropriate for any given job (with or without the age thing), I am sure most here would be offended.

I respect your right to post it -- but I'm just saying...

Gravatar...if I made a comment about a woman being inaappropriate for any given job (with or without the age thing).

Sorry, the age thing is key... try again.

Gravatarhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, what part of the human anatomy would jesus put in his mouth?

queen crab

Someone once said that if Florida and Alabama (to mention only two) didn't exist Jerry Springer couldn't do a show.

I don't know if it is true but after the clergy sex abuse revelations that we are sure of I'd say that it's ill advised to put a child in the hands of unsupervised "faith based" child care.

GravatarYet red-state parents who work 2 to 5 jobs between them in order to survive continue to vote Republican and think Rick Santorum is a genius. Go figure

What the fuck is up with that? What's wrong with these people? I swear to Jebuz I'm beginning to think it's tv. The opium of the masses. As long as they can come home from their second crap job and watch Jessica Simpson's tits on tv and a football game with beer commercials, they'll just keep running faster and faster on that hamster wheel.

GravatarI just read Dian'e link. Guess who won *Stupidest Man of the Year*?

No, not him.

GravatarThat's what you get for believing in God.

GravatarSorry, the age thing is key... try again.

Sorry, respectfully disagree -- would we say that a 25 year old woman cannot run a day care center? It happens all the time.

No, the age is not the issue I am talking about and I don't see it as the "key"

But feel free to disagree...

This was my first thought also.

You may find solace in the fact that at least Janet fucking Reno isn't DA down there anymore, so if there's something fishy about it the accused might actually walk free instead of being framed for the carrer purposes of the DA.

GravatarNo, not him.

Anyone, and I mean anyone, from the soccer coach to the day care giver is suspect. It is also unfortunately true that it is mainly men who molest children. Just aren't that many women molesters. And don't start dragging out the one or two that there are. I know they exist, but the vast majority of people interested in kiddie porn or child molestation are male.

Gravatarthe accused might actually walk free instead of being framed for the carrer purposes of the DA

Yeah, that Janet Reno, migod, worse than Hitler and all that.

Don't seem to recall where she wrote Clinton excuses for legalizing torture as a military intelligence-gathering tactic, though. Or spending public money covering up *gasp* BOOBIES! Or tracking private medical records of women who may have had abortions. Or rounding up brown people en masse and disappearing them off to lovely bastions of human rights like Egypt and Syria.

But yeah, thank god Reno's gone. It's Morning In America!

GravatarGod, the trolls are stupid.

Wholeheartedly agree - did you see the threads below? Someone posted that NPR did a feature on What's Right About Kansus

Guess some 80 year old woman can whistle and there are hikers

I am not sure, however, that this book will ever be required reading in schools.

It is a grate analysis of our times -- but it is really about so much more than kansas.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

They are tired. When I taught in the inner city almost every family (when there was a family) was holding down 3 jobs and just barely making ends meet. How much would you want to parent after putting in a full day's work at one job, and four hours at another. Hourly workers generally don't get paid sick leave or vacations. So just get up and do your twelve hours, plus commuting time, 52 weeks a year, year after year after year.

GravatarI will bitch slap the first person I hear say 'God has a reason for everything that happens on the earth'

GravatarAnon, you are fucked up. Go bother the freepers, they're almost as stupid as you are. What an asshole.

GravatarWhy doesn't Jebby butt in on this investigation? Is he afraid to offend his faith-based base?

GravatarIts a shame we all can't turn out as beautifully as the Christian super moralists and fake TV News Puritans' basic storyline would pretend.
Take perfect person Pat Bushanan and his semi-lovely sister Bayh, for example. Pat and Bayh's rigidly judgemental 'tude and hard, mean faces certainly suggest a perfect verbal and sexual abuse free 50's upbringing, not.
It is the various liberation movements that have shown a light on ancient patriarchic traditions that fostered generational abuse for so many of us.
I'm always leery of lurid media reports on certain individual cases of abuse...these reports often seem more a vicarious reading or listening thrill for other perves.
No matter the tremendous progress toward ending this ancient scourge, the abuse of children, teens and even adults continues and is even abetted by our peverse pop culture.

GravatarOne of the worst aspects of contemporary life is how disconnected people seem to be from their own children. They don't seem to spend much time with them except when they can ignore them.

Its a family "values voter" and "culture of life" thing

GravatarFrontliine on PBS did a program about the mass hysteria of child molestations. And Janet Reno was at the forefront of the whole ugly thing. Having kids taken away, imprisoning parents, destroying lives...all on evidence which was flimsy at best...non-existant, made-up, force-fed to the children at worst.

Gravatar Must be all those libruls down in Florida.

more than 3million people (3,574,509) in Florida voted for John Kerry. Massachusett's voters for Kerry: 1,793,916

I guess that makes us more than twice as liberal, eh?

GravatarWhy doesn't Jebby butt in on this investigation? Is he afraid to offend his faith-based base?

He certainly seemed to have enough time on his hands and *concern* for Terri Schiavo.

Kind of like your posts. Especially the grating part.

GravatarI think the Reno reference, trollish as it was, is appropriate since I recall that she was involved in one of these day care/child abuse prosecutions. Don't know which one or how it turned out.

Gravatarqueen crab,

I read it, but to my mind, it doesn't explain WHY people buy into that crap. What I'm looking for is some root cause that makes what would otherwise appear to be rational adults think that criminalizing abortion is good but protecting their drinking water or ensuring that they make a minimum wage and have a pension is bad. What's Wrong With Kansas explained to me that they think this way, but not really why they think this way. My best guess is tv, the modern form of bread and circuses, only without the bread.

GravatarQL in NY, that's a lot of it. A lot of it gets back to the fact that forty years ago you could support a family on one salary and today you can't. Real wages have stagnated. People are kept ignorant enough so they can't even act in their own interests, nevermind looking past that to what is best for everyone. And there is the residue of McCarthyism, politics are dirty, the world is against us (see above),...

It's not going to be pretty when the real estate market bubble pops. Which it will.

That said, a lot of wealthy people seem to dislike their children too unless they are model little achievers. That's one thing you can't fault Babbs and Poppy for. You think they've noticed the difference in quality between Bill Clinton and their own band of thieves and putschists?

GravatarSo just get up and do your twelve hours, plus commuting time, 52 weeks a year, year after year after year.

Good points -- that "circle of blame" game isn't going to solve this one.

IMHO, its the economic system where we proclaim we value this and that, but aren't willing to pay for ti that is the problem.

But I could be wrong, I often am...

GravatarWhy do these people always live in Florida? I swear!!! Every time I read about children being molested or raped or killed it is my own state-I get so sick of it. There is something seriously wrong here but damned if I can figure it out.

So putting innocent people away for life is OK as long as the Bushies are worse?

Looks like the "but Saddam did worse" defense, and is equally repugnant.

And the Frank Furster case (where his young wife was tortured by being held naked in a isolation cell until she testified against him) wasn't the only case where she framed innocent people in these witchhunt trials.

Gravatar Please explain why we refer to this as "Bobo's World"

Because David Brooks (aka Bobo) sodomizes, er...sermonizes on a regular basis about the inherent superiority of red states and other pockets of wholesome Christian goodness.

GravatarJoe:

"Bobo" is David Brooks, conservative NYT columnist who first made his bones at Rupert Murdoch's The Weekly Standard. He routinely talks up the virtues of institutionalized small-town bigotry and sexism, yet has never shown the slightest indication of wanting to leave New York City to live in any of the rural paradises he touts.

When my mom died I said that I would punch anybody who dared utter those words right in the face.

GravatarOh my god--Have y'all heard about the Raging Grannies? I love these people!

A group of anti-war senior citizens calling themselves the "Tucson Raging Grannies" say they want to enlist in the U.S. Army and go to Iraq so that their children and grandchildren can come home.

Five members of the group -- which is associated with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom -- are due in court Monday to face trespassing charges after trying to enlist at a military recruitment center last week.

Gravatarif convicted his feeding tube will be pulled in prison. no one does harder time than a child abuser/kiddie rapist.

not too difficult to connect the dots.

-J.T.

GravatarI think we should wait for solid, supported evidence. I remember a child care center case in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (in Canda) where a man, his wife, their son and eight others were tried and convicted of child abuse (including sexual, physical, and such things as having the children partake in satanic rituals - including human sacrifice).

None of it was true. And just recently the man, after 17 years of court hearings, has had the verdicts overturned - but his wife died years ago and his life and those of all the others have been destroyed.

So my only word here is caution.

GravatarFirst real question: were the children molested? Have they been examined by a physician who specializes in recognizing sexual abuse in children?

Second real question: are there health and safety violations in the day care center that can be documented? I understand Florida's standards are low, but there has to be some sort of operating criteria.

Third real question: has this story been sensationalized in order to hammer the message that day care is a terrible place and that the only appropriate place for a mother is at home and unemployed?

My main reason for asking these questions is a) remembering the McMartin case and b) the current focus on driving women from the workforce.

QL in NY

Childcare work also tends to be very low-paying, time-intensive, patience-testing work, and I don't realistically know why any normal ambitious 25-year old man would choose a job like that unless he was a complete sadistic perv who wanted easy unfettered access to kids - kinda like Joshua Palin, apparently.

Quel coinkydink.

I suppose there is the exception and that there may be a dedicated young man who genuinely wants that type of a job. Fine, but give them the appropriate background checks - because this daycare was "faith-based" and the dude happened to be the pastor's son, it's dubious whether they followed that protocol to ensure he was qualified and psychologically sound enough to take care of young children.

GravatarSeveral cartoons about Bush

Bobo's world: more fun that eating dinner with cannibals who are short one pot roast.

GravatarNow that it's been pointed out...yeah, there's a lot of shadiness in this story. Children's testimony in these cases has been shown to be very unreliable, as the interviewer can easily manipulate the child to get the desired effect. And innocent people do have their lives ruined as a result.

GravatarLime Rickey--

I know! And--Trespassing charges!

Those women totally rock. More like this!!!

GravatarThis has the air of our state's 1984 Wenatchee day care ritial abuse scandal about it.

GravatarI'm no defender of Janet Reno

So what IS it that you're doing here?

but what she did was piddly-pshitt compared to the wholesale world-wide violations of human rights that Bush, Ashcroft and Gonzales have been reponsible for.

Still hanging yourself with your moral relativism. "X did worse" doesn't cut it.

I thought we cleared that up already?

GravatarI come down on the side of Sallyh, chuck and others who had the "evil day care center" warning lights go off. Is it possible? Absolutely. Does it feel a little hinky? As someone who lived in LA during the McMartin fiasco, it sure does. But check carefully so we know for sure; guy hardly needs a free pass.

And I will defend Janet Reno somewhat here--she was very aggressive and thus probably not careful about child abuse and child molestation cases. It was stories about molestation at Waco that made her pursue the case there, even though she'd originally thought she shouldn't. Should've followed her first instinct, prolly, and pulled the fibbies out.

GravatarDon't these fundies know this is a violation of Natural Law?

You can pick your friends.

You can pick your nose.

But you can't pick your friends' nose.

GravatarReno was State Attorney for S. Florida. You can call us a red state if you want to but, Dade and Broward are the big blue areas in the state.
There's a big cultural difference between south, central and northern FL. Tallahassee cares not one whit for south FL and would disown us if they could. Like most blue areas of the country we in south FL contribute more in taxes than services received. This red state/blue state thing is just another excuse to divide us. Don't have the picture from the last election handy,(the one that showed we're all purple to an extent) every state has their blue and red spots. Blue spots usually connoting the urban/ metropolitan ( read; sane) areas.
re: Reno. Yes she was involved in an over blown day care case like most other District Attorney types (elected) at the time ('80s). She was also instrumental in some of the dead beat dad prosecution/legislation that lead the way nationally. She also saved poor little Elian from a life as a political pawn of the crazy right wing cubans around here.
And for that I will be eternally grateful.

GravatarRuviana--I agree that no one should get a pass on this one. I feel the center should be fully checked out for violations, the children should be examined throughly by someone who specializes in pediatric sexual abuse, that the backgrounds of the employers and employees that work there fully scrutinized for proper training, education, certification, and criminal records, and that the attitudes of the operators and critics should be questioned as to their motivations. That's hardly giving anyone a pass in the situation.

I'm just not eager to rush to judgment on this.

GravatarHas anyone here seen "Capturing the Friedmans"?

GravatarDrunkee is correct. Children are not all that reliable as witnesses. Come to think of it, adult witnesses aren't always reliable. The brain can trick itself into seeing what's not there.

GravatarWalterNeff
Yes, I have seen "Capturing the Friedmans." A depressing movie, but very good at showing the entire story of that mess. I walked away feeling sorry for every member of that family, except the Dad.

Gravatari'd love to know if faith ministries is on the receiving end of federal dollars.

GravatarFrankly, right now I am more concerned about this constitutional crisis. When a judge hands down a lawful order, since when can you just say no?

GravatarThe Tuscon Grannies story deserves to be spread far and wide. I deeply admire them.

Gravatarre: Reno. Yes she was involved in an over blown day care case like most other District Attorney types (elected) at the time ('80s).

Exactly the point I was trying to make -- Janet Reno was not the evil mastermind behind the daycare paranoia of the 80's; she exploited it, yes, but then again so did many people who are equally as guilty for the lives they ruined.

Bush, Ashcroft and Gonzalez on the other hand, have taken the U.S. from a model of human rights (at least in theory) to a rogue state willing to wage pre-emptive war and use torture, while denouncing others for the same.

GravatarSpeaking of the Tucson grannies...here is their picture and story!

GravatarStinky--I've had the opportunity in my career to speak to a number of young men who love kids and would like to work with them, but are driven away from it by the lack of pay, benefits, and relief.

My sister in law ran several day care centers in the 80s and 90s. She had several terrific male candidates who passed the mandatory background check for ALL of the potential employees she was considering, but was told by parents that they would not tolerate a male caretaker/teacher.

Sexism. It's alive and kicking.

GravatarDunkie's World

Indeed.

Gravatari'm waiting for Santorum to come out and denounce the liberal culture in Florida that allowed this to happen....

GravatarI think the Tuscon Grannies should wage a psyops campaign by rolling through the insurgent areas, with big megaphones on their humvees, and just telling stories about growing up during the Depression. And how much apples used to cost. And how rude the grocery clerks are. And how the bus drivers used to wear uniforms. Mission accomplished.

GravatarDeutch bag,
I don't recall anyone else in Washington ever stand up and take responsibility for their actions like Reno did.

GravatarQL--

This administration has been ignoring judicial and congressional directives for a long, long time.

GravatarThen you have those that are stupid enough to videotape their crimes...

From the "What's the matter with Kansas? chapter of Bobo's world.

Arlan and Linda Kaufman are the husband-wife team that prosecutors say enslaved two people for 14 years, forced other mentally ill individuals to work on their farm in the nude, and defrauded the federal Medicare program.

The most graphic descriptions of alleged misconduct at the Kaufman facilities is contained in 34 videotapes seized from the couple's home in 2001.

The summaries say the tapes include footage of Mr. Kaufman urging patients to masturbate in front of other patients; him instructing patients to shave the pubic hair of clients of the opposite sex; him touching patients' genitalia; and patients hula-hooping in the nude.

Gravatarbkny--I'd bet that they are.

GravatarI live in a Dem enclave within Bobo's World. Specifically, a 90% black neighborhood (I'm white) in NW Atlanta.

I've never had the slightest trouble with my black neighbors (bureaucrats are another story). The only unpleasant incident I've had was with white cops; they harrassed me for what was I doing in this neighborhood. Stealing? Buying drugs? Why are you here?

Yeah, you know why he was scared of them? Because he's a coward. An overmuscled candy-ass coward.

Just like John Wayne and Ronald Reagan, two actors who never saw real combat. The right wing does indeed love them poseurs.

Oh, joy. A tangent.

GravatarThanks Phoenix

I know about Brooks and agree he's ridiculous. I figured it was that. But this makes us look ridiculous as well.

So Atrios is saying any time something horrid happens in Florida, Georgia, Texas.... that it's because these people in "Bobo's World" are somehow like that. "Look at these people Brooks claims to be so enamored of!"

I guess I understand the joke, such as it is, but horrific crime committed by bad people occurs in New York City, San Francisco and even liberal neigborhoods in Philly.

It seems attaching the "Bobo's World" label to this story then is just a hip and cool way of saying something more like, "Look at these dumb Southern mother fuckers who molest kids."

Can't say that of course. But if we make it a Brooks joke, we can show our superiorty and excuse it because we are media critics.

It would be quite easy for me to find a story today from every state in the union - Red or Blue - about sexual abuse or any of the other crimes we attribute to Bobo's World.

And it would prove.... nothing.

Over two years ago Atrios reported a story of some ugliness, and added nothing to his posting except "Only in Texas". I complained about that as well. This kind of "commentary" adds nothing to a discussion. It's also the kind of dismissive superioroty the Wingnuts accuse of (and are occasionally quite right about)

This event was a human failing, not a Conservative one. This isn't Bobo's World, it's our world. We all share it and share responsibility to do something positive about things like this.

GravatarBush has been to how many funerals of soldiers and Marines he sent to die for his lies?

GravatarDoes anyone have definitive stuff on Faith Ministries. When I googled them I got lots of hits, but can't tell if they're all related or related to this particular Jacksonville "church".

If Bobo's world is full of scary sex/violence, is it any wonder that the people of Bobo's world feel that society is falling apart? Can you blame them for looking for ways to control and suppress man's darker urges?

Just a thought.

actually what it boils down to is miami has culture, cent. fl. doesn't.

GravatarAnd how much apples used to cost. And how rude the grocery clerks are. And how the bus drivers used to wear uniforms. Mission accomplished.

Not only that, but in department stores they had lots of people called "sales clerks" and they would run back and forth from your dressing room to the floor getting you the same thing in green or the next size down. When you called a company, a real person answered the phone and you could understand them. Milkmen came to your door and left milk, cream, eggs, and cottage cheese in a little metal box. Now, all you kids just run around with your pants hanging down around your pupkas and listening to those ipod thingies.

GravatarPere,
he's probably stii crying over not being invited to a Janet Reno Dance Party.

GravatarCan you blame them for looking for ways to control and suppress man's darker urges?

YES! They need to control their own urges and mind their own damn business.

GravatarI can attest to that. Living in New Orleans (about 7 different addresses), I never had problems with African American neighbors or Hispanic neighbors or Vietnamese neighbors.

Shoot, I got you all beat. I grew up on the lower east side of Manhattan before it was the hip East Village. True story. Our first apartment cost $38/month. Same thing now, after gentrification, goes for $1500-2000. Infuckingsane. Especially when you consider the tenements were built to be slums. When you didn't have a communal bathroom down the hall, you had a tiny room containing a toilet and nothing else. Not even a sink. Bathtub in the kitchen, natch.

GravatarRe: Children and witches.

Hansel und Gretel is a very old German story. People forget, the witch was nice at first.

Elaine,

Don't go there.

GravatarJoe,

As a resident of Texas, I can say that I find Bobo and his idealized world repugnant, and use the Bobo's world monniker myself.

You seemed to have missed the point about what Bobo's world is. It is not the Red States per se. It is the rural America which, according to Bobo, has high morals, and would never do anything like what each of the Bobo's world posts represent.

Sure there are sick fucks in all corners of this country, however, when they turn up in small town, perfect America, it gets pointed out, because according to David Brooks, that does not happen there.

GravatarBen... I guess this could be called gloating, yes. Most of what I've read seems to point more at disgust, anger, and despair, but gloating can definitely be seen in it. And you do have a point. I've considered it before, as well. I can't say I blame them for desparately trying to find some way to answer their problems.

My problem is they have decided to blame "liberals." In Bobo's world, they have turned a blind eye upon their own faults, are in active denial, and blame "liberals" for all their ills. This results in them telling the rest of the country what to do, and in the end, voting and acting against real solutions to such problems, as well as their own interests.

Shot man 'unconnected' to bombing
A man shot dead by police as part of the inquiry into Thursday's attempted bomb attacks was unconnected to the incidents, police have confirmed.
A Scotland Yard statement said the shooting was a "tragedy" which was regretted by the Metropolitan Police.

The man was shot dead after police followed him from a south London flat to Stockwell Tube station on Friday.

Two other men have been arrested and are being questioned after bombers targeted three Tube trains and a bus.

I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. 'Give me five bees for a quarter,' you'd say."

GravatarSteve, I am looking forward to the CD. I am still not sure about Eschacon as it is an extremely difficult time for teachers - I only get the one day off and we usually begin school the Wednesday before the weekend and Mrs. DWD is reluctant.

Elaine,
Had a lovely time on the island. Maybe it is better to be ignorant? (I have never convinced myself of this, but I did not feel so overwhelmed by all of the hatred when I was there.)

The problem with Bobo's world is that they seem to WANT to hate everyone who is not like them. That is a very limited world-view, but I believe they are happy with it.

If I were a woman I would be very concerned about the direction that many fundamentalist mothers are taking their daughters. I believe, fervently, that we are all individuals and have the right to do whatever the hell we feel is necessary for us. These young girls, and I am seeing them everywhere, are being trained to be nothing more than baby machines. Beings without thought or hope or individual expectations. To me this is extremely scary.

GravatarShoot, I was homeless in New Orleans for a while. No hall. No bathroom. No bath tub.

GravatarSo Atrios is saying any time something horrid happens in Florida, Georgia, Texas.... that it's because these people in "Bobo's World" are somehow like that. "Look at these people Brooks claims to be so enamored of!"

Joe, I think it's throwing cold water on Bobo's continual laudatory stories that people in red states are all Christian, god-fearing, upstanding citizens with their moral compass continually set on "righteous" while the supposedly morally relativistic, atheistic elitist blue staters hate god, hate morality and are completely devoid of any sense of right and wrong.

The point is that it's stupid, obviously, to paint with such a broad brush.

GravatarAnybody besides me remember the Satanic absue daycare hysteria of the 1990s? Children were put under coercive interrogation until, like good little torture victims, they told their interrotators exactly what they wanted to hear. It was led by a bizarre coallition of natural enemies consisting of Feminists, Freudian psychologists and fundamentalist Christians. There were all kinds of stories about tunnels dug under day care centers and kids shoving peanut butter into each others's assholes and whole ton of stuff that turned out to be complete horseshit. A lot of innocent people went to jai. One, a woman working out of a nursery school in Maplewood, NJ, was considered a suspect for being bisexual.

Just because it's right-wing churches that are under investigation this time is no reason to assume any of this is true without solid corroborative evidence. As the Iraq war showed, standards of proof are kind of important even if they're not a lot of fun. If all you have is the word of a bunch of kids, then you don't really have a case.

Remember, if this thing turns out not to be true then it's going to have the unfortunate effect of giving the right a quasi-legitimate reason to play victim.

GravatarDWD--I'm concerned that this wave of thinking is what the Regime would like to encourage. Already we're saying to students, if you want financial aid, you're going to have to join the military.

Yep. We're supposed to be the reality based ones. Let's see what kind of real evidence there is.

Although the "Truth or Dare" stories don't seem like something that kids would make up on their own.

And remember, unlike McMartin and the rest of the 80's witch hunts, two of the kids involved here are 12 and 13 - old enough to be able to tell their story reliably.

more like - more Luskin spin, I'd say.

GravatarYesterday a so-called terrorism expert was on MSNBC hailing this killing. I wonder what he's up to today?

I wonder what are the chances that he'll be asked about it now...while on the air?
BTW Are TV "terrorism experts" profiteering on the Global War on Terror?

GravatarMeanwhile, my kittens continue to prove the existence of hegemony, and the need to fight against it.

Rors:
Can you burn me a copy of Gramsci? I really want one.
Thanks.

GravatarFlorida was the site of some of the most flagrant day care hysteria scandals in the 80s. Janet Reno led the charge too. The one I remember involved a Honduran woman and her husband (names forgotten). So let's not get all excited. This is Florida after all. As The Daily Show observed, 80% of the Earth's "Duh" come from that state.

I'm kinda behind the times on genetic engineering, but I'll try.

GravatarI don't know about Florida, but in Pennsylvania, day care centers sponsored by religious institutions are not required to allow the state inspections that other day care centers undergo.

GravatarExactly the point I was trying to make -- Janet Reno was not the evil mastermind behind the daycare paranoia of the 80's; she exploited it, yes, but then again so did many people who are equally as guilty for the lives they ruined.

Mdmes et Mssrs, right next to "others did worse" our next lame excuse: "others did the same".

And she didn't just exploit it; she was hands on supervising the brainwashing and torture of Fusters wife to get a confession out of her against him.

Fucking bitch should rot in hell.

GravatarYou can bet money that old man "the very Reverend" himself was playing with junior at a tender age.

Gravatar So where's Deutschbag?

probably out in the backyard shooting at his Offical RNC "Janet Reno" target.

Did the laundry, got fresh waffles cherry&cream icecream & whipped cream from our local mob front operation.

Then again, I'm in germany. No shooting in the backyard.

Gravatarjax florida is ground zero of bobo's world...

Gravatar Deutch bag,
I don't recall anyone else in Washington ever stand up and take responsibility for their actions like Reno did.

Like I said, her innocent victim still rots in jail.

And I've been reading Eschaton before it was cool, loser.

Gravatarjust proves all abortions are bad, right?

Mr. Collateral Damage

Gravatari know judging books by covers can be dangerous, but, judging by the picture of the accused-- crystal meth might be involved and speed makes you do crazy stupid things with your penis...

GravatarI don't know about Florida, but in Pennsylvania, day care centers sponsored by religious institutions are not required to allow the state inspections that other day care centers undergo.

GravatarIf these had been organized by atheists, atheism would be cited by everyone as the reason behind the criminal activity. But since it's a church - and every time, almost it seems, it is a church - religion gets a free pass.

GravatarUh, whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty", folks?

I wonder how many remember the spate of accusations about "satanic cults" and alleged day-care abuses from the 1980s. It turns out a lot of them were either overreactions or completely false.

Overzealous prosecutors and social workers interviewing children managed, through the power of suggestion, to trump up all manner of horrific accusations that later turned out to be untrue.

As a case in point, Escondido, California, police made a thirteen year old boy "confess" to the murder of his little sister a few years ago by implanting suggestions in his mind through overly agressive interrogation and so confusing him that he became unsure of his own innocence. It was only when the true killer was captured that the boy was completely exonerated.

Authority figures have a tremendous amount of influence on children and can induce, consciously or not, erroneous testimony.

Until the facts are placed before a court, I suggest the we start acting like liberals and not jump to any unwarranted conclusions.

GravatarHow do you expect Jeb to handle this?

He's much too busy slandering Michael Schiavo.

Gravatar"HEY! JUDE LAW BONED A BIG BONED NANNY!"

"Big boned" meaning a woman who looks like a woman and not a concentration camp inmate with basketballs on her chest?

GravatarThe Canada is stupidest thing is just a joke of the kind a secure nation can tell on itself. Unlike the United States (stupidest rich people in the history of the world) they don't have to constantly pat themselves on the back and INSIST that everyone else in the world do the same.

Notice that most of our MURKAN Canada-bashers know nothing about Canada.

Most of them actually think that they just speak French in Canada.

They couldn't find it on a map if their lives depended on it.

People that stupid and ignorant sure make ya proud to be an American (not!).

GravatarI used to love when the sexist fuckers in the GOP used to call Ms. Reno "Butch" and all that other horsehit because she isn't an anorexic slut like TrAnn Coulter.

But, hey, KindaSleazy Rice and Karen Hughes are such great beauties!

Gravatar"...forced to eat worms"

"Nobody likes me
Everybody hates me
Guess I'll eat some worms..."

Gravatar"the Dr. Laura "don't have them unless you're willing to raise them 24/7" crowd who hate day care anyway.
Pere Ubu"

Oh, yeah - only the RICH should be permitted to procreate.

After all, THEY can afford to have nannies and nurses raise THEIR spawn.

Gravatar"Just because it's right-wing churches that are under investigation this time is no reason to assume any of this is true without solid corroborative evidence.

"Two words: Boston diocese.

"Let's hear them defend themselves for a change."

Sloppy, sloppy, Dave. There was plenty of corroborative evidence for Boston. The problem there was that those whose first duty should have been to protect their flock ignored it and protected the abusers instead. See, just because one group of people is guilty doesn't mean another group belonging to a different church in a completely different part of the country is too. Sort of like Muslims, you know? Most aren't terrorists. The Florida thing has NOTHING to do with Boston.

Also, the crime being proposed here is just a little unbelievable. Butt fucking unwilling boys is unseamly and disgusting but there sure has been a lot of it. Ordering kids to pick each others' noses is a little odd, don't you think? Forgive the expression but that story smells big time. I mean, where's the thrill?

GravatarIt's a goddamn shame when grandmothers have to fill the shoes of the Yellow Elephants.
