Because a Schiavo scenario is one in which people pour money into a hospital to keep someone alive, and because embryonic stem cell research is gonna be HUGELY profitable for the pharmaceutical industry.

The profitablility of an ER depends on the hospital's location and whether or not the majority of visits are knife and gun club or heart attacks and auto accidents. The latter make money, the former don't - which is why public hospitals are often the only ones with ER's in inner cities.
And why so many ER's are closing.

I think I'd fall off of my chair if any of my true loves re-entered my life.
Can't imagine it.

O'er mountain, hill, and plain.
HOLY STATUES:
God shall strike them down for
Each sperm that's spilt in vain.
EVERYONE:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is good.
Every sperm is needed
In your neighbourhood.
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite iraaaaaate!

If my previous love re-entered my life, I'd have the restraining order reinstated before she could stab me or burn down my house.
Ahh, I see you had an encounter with one of those, too. So did I, but it was more his ex-wife who broke into my house, egged my car, sent me thousands of dollars worth of mail order items and magazine subscriptions, sent me a dead rat in the mail, changed my phone number...
She's on the planning commission for a nearby town. Damn, I'd love to out her for the psycho she is. I have more shit on her than Carter has pills. She fucked with my life for almost four years, until I finally broke up with the guy because I could no longer deal with the millstone that is her around his neck. She's still haunting him, I'm sure.
She got all "born again" and is now running for city commissioner as a rethug.
But I'm smart enough to know that it's best to let sleeping dogs lie...

Another great essay by driftglass. I rate his chops right up there Digby. Bookmark him, now!
That was the astonishment of his re-election: that 51 million Americans looked a criminal in the eye, steeped in his crimes to the point of bloody saturation...and then looked at a genuine war hero, a grown-up and, for all his flaws, more of a statesman in any contiguous five minute period than Bush has ever been his whole, sorry life...
...and said, “I’d like a double scoop of Criminal Dumbass please. With extra treasonous sprinkles!”
Divide and conquer.

This is an interesting question on stem cell research I came across, anybody have a heads up on this stuff?
"The collection of stem cells from the umbilical cord has been hailed as the biggest breakthrough since antibiotics. 'The reason for collecting the cells from the umbilical cord is quite simple,' explains Dr Daly. 'The umbilical cord is a rich source of stem cells and the cells, at the time of collection have yet to find their path and can therefore be treated to become any type of cell needed. It is possible to extract the cells from adults but this is a more invasive process and the stem cells are more differentiated compared to the pluripotent umbilical cord stem cells. Basically, there is no guarantee of finding the correct type. The cells we collect however have the potential to treat almost any illness imaginable.'"
What I find interesting here is that this is the only article I found using "Pluripotent umbilical cord stem cells" in google, and will look later into the multipotent stem cells that are usually associated with umbilical stem cells. All in all the situation is a little weird, since the public has been lead to believe that a stem cell is a stem cell, inwhich case there is very little reason to antagonize large portions of the population with this issue.
