Well, going to a soldier's funeral may not make Jean more credible than Hackett on Eye-Rack, but it makes her more credible than Little Boots as His Pussilanimousness ain't been to no funerals as it upsets him.

A federal judge has ruled that some provisions of the U.S. Patriot Act dealing with foreign terrorist organizations remain too vague to be understood by a person of average intelligence and are therefore unconstitutional.
How can we base law on "average intelligence" when we've put a moron in the highest office?

Chris Matthews interviewed Hackett several days ago, and what an impressive individual. If people there aren't paying attention to this man, they are losing out. Why, yes, yes she is horrible. The interview on Hardball did her no favors in the "showing off my brains" department, and the fact that she regurgitates GOP talking points and criticizes an Iraq vet means, to me, that she's highlighting pages from the Rovian playbook.
And frankly, anyone, and I mean anyone, who supported George Bush in the last election is an idiot and gets zero respect from me.
Normally, I wouldn't take such a hardcore approach in my ideology. But Bush has fucked up this country to damn near unrecognizable, and anyone who voted for him is not paying attention to reality.

I watched that last night, and compared to Hackett, she is an idiot.
For the umpteenth time, we probably won't win this one, but boy oh boy, it feels good to be fighting. And we are really highlighting the differences between the two parties. Of course, they have it worked that if you don't follow their agenda 100%, you are a liberal. I think there are a whole lotta liberals being borne.

I'd be disappointed in knowing that you supported Bush over Gore. However, I can understand that decision more so than I can understand why anyone would have voted for Bush over Kerry. In the 2000 election, Bush didn't have much of a national track record, although anyone who studied his biography could see that he fucked up everything he touched. I didn't like his Rovian campaign tactics against Richards (rumoring that she was a lesbian) or McCain, and I had intuition that he would be a terrible president. He actually turned out to be worse than I expected.
Bush had almost four years of fucking over this country at the time of the '04 election, and anyone who voted for him clearly wasn't paying attention, or was blinded by either jingoistic or religious bullshit. I can't respect the decision by anyone to vote Bush over Kerry in '04, with the possible exception of the richest of the rich, who were clearly voting in their own best interest (and those folks are few and far between).

Late to the thread, but having seen Ms. Schmidt perform over the last couple of days, she is sounding desperate and strident and edgy.
Desperate strident and edgy, is the factor that will push the undecideds over to Hackett.
Look at it this way--the undecideds are undecideds because they are waiting for someone to make some sort of decision, or look decisive, in essence, decide for them. Jean Schmidt does not look that way. She looks pissed and worried, like someone told her this would be easy, and she getting screwed.
If she continues to play that way, looky sweaty and over wrought, she will lose, Paul Hackett will win, and we will have one member of Congress who can speak about Iraq with authority. Big improvement over the what's there now.

Ignorance is bliss. Yes, there are still a lot of Dubya supporters here in the 2nd Congressional District of Ohio. I believe it was Mark Twain who said "When the end of time comes, I want to be in Cincinnati. People there have always been about 20 years behind the times". I personally like to think of Cincinnati more as the city where free-thought goes to die.
Anyway, many of my neighbors believe this is the same GOP as during the Reagan years, and you cannot convince them otherwise. Hell they still believe Sadamm was responsible for 9/11, and any mention of lies and deceipt within this administration is all the result of the liberal media.

I'm watching this clip and am reminded of a recent article I read in Time about young Iranians being fed happy pills to keep them away from politics. Schmitt is saying most of the voters in her district are happy go lucky cos of bush fighting "OVER THERE". They only care about what personally affects them and dead Iraqis, much less 1700 more than the local 4-Her they're currently honoring, don't matter!!

Yeah, but it was good cover for Diebold. "Well, gee, guess it must have been those evangelicals."

I'm late to this party, but this is the difference between Howard Dean's DNC and Terry McDipshit's. The Republicans are used to being able to run any mouthbreathing live body they can find in these districts because the Democrats never fought there before. The Democrats surrendered places like this and all the voters in them to craven gasbags like Schmidt, and there was no blogosphere to support people like Hackett.
Now we fight the fights that need fighting, not just the fights we can win, and it's got them completely bumfuzzled.
I look forward to 2006. Let no Republican run unopposed. Anywhere.
Thanks all, the sad thing is that that is last creative quilt I made. Since 11/2, all my quilts have been pretty utilitarian. It's like the ooomph left. But it is creeping back.

How are we ever, ever going to break through this haze. Everything that this woman describes is absolutely repugnant. On the one hand, we have the end of the "Death Tax," the end of "Capital Gains Taxes," and a "small government." On the other hand, she supports big wars "on their shores," an energy bill with a big subsidy for corn farmers in her district and beefier border patrols to stop "illegal immigrants." In other words, she wants it both ways.
Why can't we call people like this out for the bullshit they say rather than focusing on her foul personality. The other side has already given up the war of ideas. It is ours for the taking.

Who do you like in this race for Congress?
Paul Hackett: 60.6%
Jean Schmidt: 35.1%
Neither: 4.2%
For all you fine folk saying that she's terrible, you're right, she's terrible and her policy ideas (such as they are) are terrible.
BUT, you and I are not who she's trying to appeal to. She came across as someone who is passionate about "her" planks and about the leader of her party, and sadly, this country. And she yelled at a reporter. Believe me when I tell you that this content and delivery is red meat (pun intended) to the nitwits. This is a winning strategergy for her.
Fortunately, Hackett has perfected a delivery that is similar to Loofa-boy. Don't stone me, but really, Hackett's delivery is right out of O'Liely's playbook.
And that is a good thing, 'cause it's a proven straterjimy with his intended audience.
But don't kid yourselves. Everything Schmidt said and every annoying stylistic oddity is time-tested with the nitwits.

Rove & Company were willing to play really dirty, and the locals accommodated them by putting up all the hate amendments in close jurisdictions. Add into the mix Mr. Blackwell and you have a bush win. The good thing is, if people weren't paying close enough attention then, they are beginning to pay attention now, hence w's low poll numbers. The repuke in this district won by 70% last go round, and yet Hackett is turning this into a competition. An almost win here will translate into definite wins in close jurisdictions.

I gave up when she was talking about how much the people love the energy bill.
The energy bill is over 1,700 pages long. It's my job, and I have only worked me way through a small portion of it. Parts of it simply amend certain portions of other statutes and you have to have the original statute in front of you to see what the result of the amendment is. Other amendments are unclear as to whether they provide the feds with new powers, limit powers the feds always had, or simply make explicit powers that the feds always had.
The average voter in Ohio doesn't love this energy bill because they don't know it. As I said, it's my job to know it and I don't know it yet.
What she'd doing is telling the voters that they "vill luv zis bill" or else.

Same thing with all these people who predict an easy defeat of Santorum. I thought the same thing in '00 and I would NEVER have expected W to win in '04 but son of a bitch if the stupid electorate didn't put 'em both back in office. This is never going to be easy and nothing is ever sure, especially when it comes to morons and elections. I don't have a lot of faith in Americans doing the right thing, they've proven too many times over the past decade or so that they're as stupid as the shitheads they put in office.

DO NOT GIVE UP. IT IS PROBABLY STILL THERE.
Do NOTHING else on your computer except actions to try to recover it. It is almost certainly somewhere out there on the hard drive, but everytime you or Windoze does anything there is more of a chance that it will get overwritten. Until it get overwritten it can almost certainly be recovered. Do you have one of the utility packages that can recover files. If you do not have a recovery program on the hard drive the safest thing would be to boot the computer from a floppy (if possible) and then search for the data.

Sounds like OH-2, along with many other places, is ripe for a progressive awakening... the important thing is for these people to get a steady stream of good people like Hackett that show the way from the darkness:
"With the redistricting that occurred after the 2000 census, Ohio’s 2nd Congressional District changed considerably from the one that Rob Portman first won in 1993.
The district has shifted to the east and, in the process, has become lower-income and more rural than it was when it was dominated by the eastern suburbs of Cincinnati."

See, this Republican ownership of "family values" is bullshit. The only things they value are unborn fetuses and the sanctity of a Christian marriage between a man and a woman.
There are so many more values that I consider important that the Republicans just brush right over:
Telling the truth.
Treating everyone equally.
Making sure that the sick are cared for and the homeless are sheltered and fed.
Respecting others.
The keystone of Republican values is greed. They use "culture of life" issues like gay marriage and ant-choice to reel in voters who can't comprehend the all-encompassing picture of how progressive values can actually help make this country a better place.
Kitty's acting up; lost my rant.

I know that OH-2 is a super-conservative district, but still....if the Democrats can field a strong veteran candidate, against a woman as unappealing as this, who is involved in her own graft controversy, in a state where her party has been literally stealing from the treasury, during an unpopular Republican administration overseeing a disaster of a war and budget...and we STILL lose, then that's depressing.
How in the hell could Ohio voters see what the GOP is doing to the military, to the federal government, to their state and their pensions, and faced with a candidate as slimy, vicious and unaccomplished in any way except spewing vitriol, and still vote for her?!

Air America Steals Half Million Dollars From Bronx Kids Charity
And the kicker is they're not sorry...
Here's the short version of the story, covered first by Brian Maloney with followups from Michelle Malkin and Captain Ed.
The leader of the Bronx-based Gloria Wise Club, Charles Rosen, reportedly loaned $480,000 in the startup Air America radio network, at the request of Air America chairman (at the time) Evan Cohen. The Gloria Wise Club was to benefit from the interest that Air America would pay on its loan. At the time the alleged transfers of funds took place, Cohen was also board member of the Gloria Wise Club.
Evan Cohen was sacked at Air America, and the was company sold to new investors. No one knows where the money went (though it presumably went right into the kitty of the cash hemorrhaging radio network) , or if any of the money has been ever been repaid. Because the Gloria Wise Club depends heavily on federal and city funding for its operations, New York City's Department Of Investigation (DOI) is investigating the charity for financial mismanagement specifically related to the Air America debacle.
So what does the network of Al Franken, Janeane Garofalo, and Jerry Springer have to say about this "loan," which literally robbed seniors and kids of needed services? Brian Maloney received this response from Air America:
"On MAY 24, 2004 the newly formed PIQUANT LLC acquired the principal assets of AIR AMERICA RADIO from the prior ownership entities. PIQUANT has owned and operated AIR AMERICA RADIO since that time. The company that had run AIR AMERICA RADIO till then no longer had anything to do with the network.
"PIQUANT had no involvement whatsoever with funds from GLORIA WISE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB. PIQUANT neither received nor expended any of the sums that are the subject of the City's investigation of the CLUB.
"PIQUANT is not being investigated by the City, which is investigating a transaction that took place before PIQUANT existed."
Translation - We didn't exist as a corporate entity at the time of the swindle, so it can't be our fault. The Air America that stole that money doesn't exist anymore. Obviously this story is a diversionary tactic; plotted and orchestrated by Karl Rove to divert attention from his own troubles...

I threw some kibble into them, which the kittens immediately started wolfing down.
Then they went to sleep and I was wide awake.

also the correct way to talk to trolls is simple and direct.
i find that if you don't like their topic of conversation, just ask a question and they will jump to something else.

From editiorial in the Cinci Enquirer, about he family who's flags commemorating a relative who died in Iraq were vandalized.
It is difficult to know what to do in such cases, difficult for most people to feel anything but rage at this crime.
But Jim Wessel is not like most people. The rest of us should heed his example.
On Thursday, he stood outside the Police Department and urged his friends and neighbors to simmer down. He said there should be no ill will toward the boys or their families. He said his family believed this was a random act of juvenile violence. Thoughtless, yes. And certainly stupid and malicious. But also juvenile.
"We are confident that the juvenile justice system will handle this case in an appropriate manner," he said. "We ask the community to show no animosity toward the accused and their families."
In other places, among other people, there might have been calls for vengeance. But vengeance isn't the same thing as justice. It wasn't the ideal Tim Hines was in uniform to serve. We thank Jim Wessel for reminding us of that.

Look, I know this might sound defeatist, but I watched the clip and came to the conclusion that Schmidt did a good job of reaching the voters she needs to win.
From our perspective we see her as less than believable and shallow in spouting talking points. I think we I am not sure how to explain it, but there is something about her responses that actually do garner voters; even if her actual stand on issues vital to her district do not improve anything in her disctrict for her constituents. What she did in this instance did not lose her any votes. It is possible that Hackett's image and character will sway him some votes. I just don't think Schmidt will lose voters by her own presense. Hackett has come across as more comfortable with who he is than any Democrtaic candidate I have seen since Robert Kennedy.

A better question is why, when they have neither the house or the Senate, do dems get the blame for Republican atrocities?
Here is a simple truth. It makes a difference who gets elected both for who you elect and the leadership that they will support in the legislative.
The Republicans don't care if they bankrupt the country as long as the money all goes to their side. They're going to empty the treasury into the pockets of the wealthy.
That's why it's important to get Democrats elected and all Republicans defeated.

Look, I know this might sound defeatist, but I watched the clip and came to the conclusion that Schmidt did a good job of reaching the voters she needs to win.
Probably so. Which means the issue is two-fold: (1) Hackett has to motivate his base, and, trickier (2) people in Ohio have to decide something valuable is at stake, and they need to take a stand for or against it. Maybe looking at Schmidt will make them think twice about the choice simply being between Tweedledum and Tweedledumber.
The latter, of course, has been the vain hope of American politics; but once in a great while, it is also the salvation of American politics. Perhaps Hackett will tap into that vote. One can only hope.

I've been thinking a lot the last few days about the christian belief in redemption vs. the old testament vengeance and judgment advocated by the "christian" right.
WTF is going on, here?
First, a gross distortion of the OT. The God of Abraham is not really a god of vengeance. But a Biblically illiterate crowd can always be convinced that what is in the Bible is what Dobson and Falwell say is there (why bother to read for yourself when someone else will do it for you?)
A swing of the pendulum, I think, which is swinging back. At the turn of the 20th century, mail-order lessons in NT (koine) Greek were all the rage in America, as people tried to learn Greek themselves, and so read the NT in the original tongues. How far from that we have come.
And yet, the Jesus Seminar and Marcus Borg and Dom Crossan sell a lot of books, as does Shelby Spong. Something is happening, and "right wing Christians" are just a very vocal minority.
Growing more vocal as their political clout begins to wane, IMHO.

I think that if the dems ever get back 2 branches of govt., that they will let repubs filibuster their court nominees, cut back voting in the house to 15 min. And investigate the president everytime the repubs/media says boo. I like Reid and Dean. I think they are fighters. But dems like Joementum, and Biden ruin it for everybody else. After what Joementum did with lecturing Clinton publicly, why is he so silent about Rovegate, Gannongate, Enrongate, Medicare billgate, Delaygate, etc.?
For example, if the dems ever got back the WH, the first thing that they should do is tell the media that they are going to have the exact same amount of press conferences that Bush had. And they will use anoymous sources as Bush did. And that they will deny access to anybody who prints negative stories about the WH as Bush did. If a reporter complains about it, ask why they have a double standard, and then promply cut off his/her acess.

Molly Ivins made a useful distinction: politicians of all stripes once came to Washington to govern, which necessarily involves exercising a lot of power, but for the "greater good," one way or another.

What got me thinking about this, oddly, was a birthday gift: Carl Hiaasen's latest novel. The problem with hte propaganda working is that is has allowed them tohave the run of the place for far too long causing way too much damage.

How fucking stupid, hang her with the fact that it takes more energy to turn corn into ethanol than the ethanol produces. It's an energy sinkhole and pork, didn't they love to point to Daschle and his ethanol pork. Whose pork is it now?

Crack that whip, scare those voters, react in an emotionally disturbed way... just like her future constituents' reaction to 9/11.

"You know, the fact of the matter is there are no weapons of mass destruction.
And, uh, we were listening to a thug, uh, Saddam Hussain, who said that there was.
He wasn't allowing people to go in and inspect. Uh, we called him on it.
And, you know, we are now standing with the government where
there won't be any weapons of mass distruction. And, uh, in the new country that is becoming democratic and where we won't have to face the nuclear threat. I think that is a
great thing and so the the people of this second district."
That's just not true. Bush lied about this and now it is a part of the new, revised history of the war. Saddam did indeed allow the inspectors in.
Reminds me of all the hippie burnouts in Traverse City last fall. We had to stroll through a gauntlet of them on our way in to hear Dubya. They were really pretty pitiful.

Back to the original subject, Schmidt punctuates her talking points by claming that it is ethanol that powers the citizens in Southern Ohio. Does she even know what she is saying? She just called her entire district a bunch of drunks! (to the chemically challenged: ethanol is the alcohol that is the major component of ALL consumable liquor; in particular, when we talk of 40% alcohol in vodka, for example, that means that it has 40% ethanol and 60% water)

If I'm not mistaken, she even says 'Nukular' in her responses.
Check it out at 6mins into the Hardball clip. Talk about loyalty to Bush talking points.
