I think that if the dems ever get back 2 branches of govt., that they will let repubs filibuster their court nominees, cut back voting in the house to 15 min. And investigate the president everytime the repubs/media says boo. I like Reid and Dean. I think they are fighters. But dems like Joementum, and Biden ruin it for everybody else. After what Joementum did with lecturing Clinton publicly, why is he so silent about Rovegate, Gannongate, Enrongate, Medicare billgate, Delaygate, etc.?
For example, if the dems ever got back the WH, the first thing that they should do is tell the media that they are going to have the exact same amount of press conferences that Bush had. And they will use anoymous sources as Bush did. And that they will deny access to anybody who prints negative stories about the WH as Bush did. If a reporter complains about it, ask why they have a double standard, and then promply cut off his/her acess.

America agrees more with the dem philosophy than the repub philosophy. Yet dems cannot get elect proportianaly. The repubs have these hot button issues that always gets their people out. This race is a test. How can dems push certain wedge issues to depress the repub turnout, while boosting the dem turnout?

i believe the national coverage is also important. when the local cheerleaders see their own personal bozo "expouse" bullshit, it has the same effect as a pep rally. but maybe when they see someone else they might actually hear some of the words and react with a more reasonable "WTF?"
plus independents who are on the fence or don't bother get a better view of what is happening in a national perspective.

I have no illusions that the Times will come clean and fully investigate Miller's very shady ideology and affiliations, but a sustained blogsphere effort to turn up the heat on their perfidy might force their MSM competitors to do just that.

NLRB Green Lights Ban on Off-Duty Fraternizing Among Co-Workers
Workers Rights Watch Eye on the NLRBIt is a regular pastime for co-workers to chat during a coffee break, at a union hall, or over a beer about workplace issues, good grilling recipes, and celebrity gossip. Yet a recent ruling by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) allows employers to ban off-duty fraternizing among co-workers, severely weakening the rights of free association and speech, and violating basic standards of privacy for America's workers.

Private Prison Industry Rebound From Uncertain Times
NEW YORK (AP) -- Though state governments are no longer fueling a private prison boom, the industry's major companies are upbeat -- thanks in large measure to a surge of business from federal agencies seeking to house fast-rising numbers of criminals and detained aliens.
Since 2000, the number of federal inmates in private facilities -- prisons and halfway houses -- has increased by two-thirds to more than 24,000. Thousands more detainees not convicted of crimes are confined in for-profit facilities, which now hold roughly 14 percent of all federal prisoners, compared to less than 6 percent of state inmates.

I was in Cincinatti just a little over a week ago Friday, visiting Kings Island with the kids. For the brief 30-45 minutes it took to drive out of range of the Cincy radio stations there were comments regarding the race. They were brief because the race had not become a hot topic yet, but they all stated that they liked the fact Hackett was a veteran of the Iraq police action(emphasis mine).
Yet in the end they all expressed hopes that Hackett would move or legislate from the center when it came to taxes and such.
I think that if these guys were fair in their comments then this race could come down to the undeclared. Those whose opinions are not being exposed to the public. This looks a lot like the way the presidential election was being exit polled. A lot of conservatives simply weren't participating in the polls and as such were creating a large skew in the results which made the race seem too lopsided in favor of Kerry.
I figure a lot of these people do not trust those running the exit polls. They probably associate them with the liberal media they hear about and as such do not voice their opinions in polls.
If this trend continues today, or next week for that matter come Tuesday then the results could be unpredictable.
Charley--I don't find myself experiencing violent emotions so much as I live with this underlying current of dread and anxiety, and that disturbs me enough as is.

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Two British security guards and at least 22 Iraqis were killed in attacks across the country as MPs worked against the clock to try to reach agreement on a draft constitution by Monday.
In Amman, Saddam Hussein's defence team charged that the ousted dictator had been attacked by an unidentified man during a court hearing on Thursday discussing charges over the brutal 1991 suppression of a Shiite uprising.
The two British security contractors were killed Saturday when their consular convoy was targeted by a roadside bomb near the southern city of Basra, the Foreign Office said in London.

The way to target MSNBC for a liberal take over is to WATCH liberal programming, wherever it may be on. Look at Fox's example. Fox has a network (not the news) that programs to the lowest common denominator, why? Because people watch. Why have Temptation Island on? To get people to watch. Same with FX. The programming on these networks is often the kind of programming that people that watch Fox News bloviate over. The reason that Fox News does what it does is so people watch. If it was more profitable to have liberal views expressed, how long would it take for Fox to dump Brit, Bill, et. al.? So maybe, vote with the remote.

Fuck that shit. Dems need to force repubs to meet in the basement and cut off their mikes. This is how the dems got in the situation that they are in. By playing nice and fair. When the Terminator looses next year, the first thing the dem govornor needs to do is redistrict all the repubs out of office. That alone might switch the house. When the dems get back congress, the first thing they need to do is cut off fund for PBS until Moyers is on, and WSJ is off. When was the last time the dems won by playing nice. The repubs rewrote all the rules-they are going to have to deal with it.

Has anyone thought of taking Orwell's 1984 and adapting it to the screen using the last five years as the reference point?
Funny you should mention that, because there's another lesser known 'nightmare utopia' novel - Player Piano, by Kurt Vonnegut - which I think in many ways speaks even more directly to the crisis America is now facing than does Orwell's work.
Admittedly, Player Piano does not deal so much with the subjects of political repression and ideological conformity as it does class divisions, the dignity of labor, and how the relentless emphasis on industrial automation and maximum efficiency ultimately deprives a large segment of society of the opportunity to lead meaningful and satisfying lives.
But those political and ideological elements are certainly there as well. IMO, this is a novel that almost begs to be brought up to date (it was, after all, written in 1952, only a few years after Orwell's novel) and adopted to the medium of cinema. In the right hands I really think it could become a very illuminating and important film.

Methuen was winning 3-1 when assistant coach Domingo Infante instructed the pitcher in Spanish to try to pick off a runner at second base. After the unsuccessful attempt, the umpire called time-out and spoke with a Little League official who was at the game. The unidentified umpire then decreed that only English could be spoken.
"All I could hear was, 'We cannot allow this,"' Mosher said. "At this point I was baffled why we could only speak English."
Mosher said he challenged the ruling, but the Little League official said it would stand. Infante then left the game in protest, which Mosher said demoralized his pitcher and catcher, who speak little English. Methuen lost the game 10-6, though the team remains alive in the tournament.

ABHA/RIYADH, 30 July 2005 — A 26-year-old mother of three convicted of murdering a man six years ago moved closer to the executioner’s block after the slain man’s family refused all public pleas to forgive her and demanded that the state execute her.
Several tribal leaders of the Asir region as well as members from the Shoura Council arrived in the city of Khamis Mushayt on Thursday to visit the victim’s family members to try to persuade them for forgiveness. The mayor of Khamis Mushayt as well as tribal leaders from Qahtan and Shahran engaged in a five-hour discussion with the survivors, as citizens across Asir were waiting in anticipation that their pleas would find mercy in the hearts of the victim’s family to forgive the woman.
If western leaders want to stop the source of 'terraism' their target should be Saudi Arabia. Its all very well chucking foregin students out of the Pakistani madrases but it is the Saudis who fund them.
Since this is the land of realpoliks Saudi remains untouched due to her oil so nothing will change.

Worst thing about being vegetarian? People who think poultry and fish are vegetarian.
At least five people have been killed in Baghdad by a car bomber who tried to ram a police patrol near the national theatre.
The dead included a police officer, while five police were among the 25 wounded, the Interior Ministry reported.
Police reinforcements had been called in to secure the theatre, which was being used to hold a public meeting discussing Iraq's draft constitution. Several legislators were at the event.
The attack happened just after 3pm (1110 GMT) on Saturday as the crowd was leaving the theatre, according to a police officer on the scene.

Worst thing about being vegetarian? People who think poultry and fish are vegetarian.
What is it about the word that people don't get?
my wife has been vegetarian since she was in HS, kids have been all their lives and grandson is now too. not me, except at home.
did you ever see the strip where dilbert is asking bob the vegetarian dinosaur what he eats?
D: Fish?
B: Fish aren't vegetables.
D: Clams?
B: Clams aren't vegetables either. But I'm beginning to think YOU are.

Is Miss Tabby here?
If not, I need you to all be my Miss Tabbys.
I received a very alarmed phone call from my daughter's best friend, who spent the night with her here at our house last night.
Apparently, unbeknownst to us, the relationship she has with her 35-year-old bf is more serious than we realized. He is pushing her to move out and get married. She, of course, has revealed none of this to us.
He has been very verbally abusive towards her--last night, he was fiercely furious with her for spending time with her friend. Even my daughter admits he's very controlling.
She's not even 20 yet.
Her friend says she took her current job in order to pay for her moving out.
Recently, she got a huge tattoo of the guy's name on her back.
CNN.com's headline is "Doctors report Bush 'fit for duty'", though what "duty" he could possibly be responsible for escapes me.

WASHINGTON, July 30 - Uzbekistan formally ordered the United States to leave an air base that has been a hub for operations in Afghanistan in protest over a predawn United Nations operation on Friday to spirit out refugees who had fled an uprising in Uzbekistan in May, senior State Department officials said Saturday.
The officials said Uzbekistan had given the United States 180 days to close the base, which has played a central role in rooting out fighters of the Taliban and Al Qaeda and in carrying out relief operations.

I don't have any kids, and so this is probably bad advice, and most likely not what you want to hear, but IMO, there's nothing you can do. And maybe there's nothing you should do. My wife knows someone whose spouse is a drunk and daughter is a drug addict. This person has tried to help the daughter every way they can, and she just continues her downward spiral. They bought the daughter a car so she could get to work, and the car got "stolen" (read: given to a dealer she owed money to). Most recently, she turned up in jail for trying to snatch an old lady's purse. My wife's friend just spent $40K to send the spouse to a six-week drying-out camp. When the spouse returned, the first stop the spouse made coming home from the airport was the liquor store to buy a half gallon of vodka.
If people are determined to fuck up their life, they will. You've done all you can. My advice is you sit here down, lay it all out very dispassionately and non-judgmentally, let her know she'll always be your daughter, but if she fucks up, she's the one who will suffer, and she is fucking up.
Then I remembered the short, hairy guy I live with and his mandarin nails....

smallfish, consider this -- learning a second language generally improves comprehension of one's native language. In my case, learning French was the key to my grokking English grammar.
(with that -- clean sheets upstairs)

They weren't requiring the ump to make his calls in Spanish, fergawdsake, they were forbidding people from using their native language when speaking with each other. How Nazi is that?
fourmorewars
The ump thought his ability to understand what was going on was compromised. He made a stupid mistake after confiring with a Little League offical.
No Nazi agenda here. Just dumbness.
From my understanding.

I live in Texas, where there is a very large contigent of Mexican Americans. I work with a great many, and the language divide makes it very difficult to communicate, much less get thigs done in an orderly, and satisfactory mannor. Many people I know have given up and learned some sort of spanish dialect to communicate.Still it is very unsatisfactory and things get fucked up because of the communication deficiencies. When we don't reqire that English be spoken (let alone be taught) at all functions, things get left unsaid or undone or miscommunicated.
I had too many troubles getting into the coaster cars. I'm too tall, my shoulders too broad, and my chest to full to allow those wrap over protective bars to fit. On the free fall drop ride I couldn't get it to fit down around me without risking suffocation. The problem was with the security belts that latch the overwrapping bars. They were not consistent and far too short.
What's funny is that I went on the junior childrens danglefeet roller coaster with my son and the darned thing fit fine. But the adult rides were all too tight.
As for Son of Beast, my legs were cramped into the car as the protective bar was too low and too narrow. A whole slew of guys only slightly larger than myself tried to get in and ended up having to get out and not ride. Pissed them off badly cause they had waited in line almost an hour.
Other than that I thought the best ride was the Tomb Raider ride. It was very unique for an indoor ride.
I have an opinion on the language thing. My mom's parents were italian immigrants. they never spoke italian to their daughters, wanted them to grow up to be "Americans". I don't speak italian now as a result. Wish I did.
Like everything else, I think it is the difference between what is allowed and what is required. I don't think that all classes need to be taught in every native language represented by the school's population. Cetainly English is the main language in the country, and anyone will be more successful if they speak English (don't worry about dialect, that's a red herring). Polyglotism is even better, but English is and should be essential.
That said, it is horrific that people would be persecuted for speaking their native language. And there is nothing wrong with recognizing that some areas have high populations of non-English speaking residents. Chamblee, Ga has many roadsigns in Korean, and in parts of Roswell only Spanish is spoken. It seems only practical to acknowledge that and have schools in those areas provide mutli-lingual courses. It's a lot easier to learn English if translation is provided.
So everyone is right.
Can we talk about cats again now? We tried to convert our dog and cat to a vegetarian diet. The dog loved carrots, and was a pushover. The cat just sniffed and went out for chipmunks.

The little league feild should be one place where language should be an even playing feild. Unless it is some kind of international event. Plain and simple. Except when it gets taken up by those that want to think too much about it.
I agree completely. Spanish should be mandatory.

Well, smalfish, we certainly don't want any kids playing Little League unless they can speak English, now do we?
Never mind that Hispanic kid who is just dying for friends but doesn't understand the language yet. Oh he's working on it, but we have to wait until he's fluent. And be sure and get really pissed when he joins a gang instead.
or sally you could sit down with the 'gentleman' in question, look him in the eye, and say,
'if you ever hurt my daughter in any way I will pay bikers 25,000 dollars to track you down and leave you in a head with your balls stuffed in your mouth.'

I agree that things work better when everyone can understand everyone else, but that was a Little League game. Nothing was going to get screwed up if the coach spoke Spanish to the kid. We don't know how long the kid had been in the country.
If that kid does not learn English he will find that his job prospects will be limited. His not speaking English may be a nuisance to you but will cost him considerably more.
English could easily be considered the dominant language in the world. There may be languages which more people speak as their primary language but us English speakers are probably the only people who could go anywhere in the world and be able to find people who speak our language. English is the language of international air traffic control. When some disaster elsewhere in the world appears on TV notice how often the word 'ambulance' appears on the vehicles transporting the injured.

'head' would be OK especially if it was a porta-potty about 3 days after a rock concert.

"Ambulance" comes from the Latin. Rome Lives!

Anyone who advocates English-only policies should read up on the language riots that took place in Bombay during the 60's and just cool their jets.
If I were King, I'd make everyone learn at least two languages in school. I've found I have a much better understanding of how English is constructed after learning another language.

Ubu - I couldn't agree more. Americans are foreign language phobes - my god, you'd think it was right next to asking someone for his kidney, asking him to learn, or even just tolerate, a language other than American English.
No wonder the Europeans think we're stupid. We are.

I live in southern Mexico and need to speak Spanish to be understood by the vast majority of the folks I interact with on any given day. No one makes me speak Spanish, it just makes sense. I wish I had a better command of the language, but hey, even after almost 10 years I still learn new stuff all the time. It has however reached the point where I cringe when hearing tourists chatting away to locals in English. They don't seem to get it, the people who live here speak Spanish. Let's not even talk about tourists paying for their purchases at the local tienda with $20 bills!?
Funny to think that I studied German in school. But then again, the way things are going State-side, maybe that should be the official language in America!

"Pope Benedict XVI lamented the seemingly "dying" church in Europe and the United States.
He said the West was "a world that is tired of its own culture, a world that has arrived at a time in which there's no need for God, much less Christ, and in which it seems that man alone can make himself."
Er, no, Benny Da Rat - it's because people here in the West are not content with your 12th century thinking. They don't want a return to the Dark Ages, to the Inquisition, when dissent meant persecution.
They are not content with women being held in contempt and gays being hated. Women have rights - we are not walking wombs. Gay people are not subhuman simply because they can't make babies.
They are not content with their children being molested by your employees while you and your underlings scurry to cover it up.
They are not content to simply pray, pay, obey and keep their mouths shut.
People in the West are not content to jump whenever you crack the whip.
This is the 21st Century. Things are different.

Turkey sometimes taste dry...
Not if you brine it. We used this recipe last Christmas, and when we carved the turkey, it gushed with juices, ran out all over the floor, which made the cat very happy.
Thing is, we didn't even bother with gravy. Even the breast was juicy and delicious, and I'm a dark meat lover.

Agree 200%! I've gotten to where I can understand a lot of Spanish, but unfortunately (thinking I'd someday live in Europe) took 5 years of French in school, so when I try to speak Spanish, what comes out of my mouth is more Frenglish.

Check it out: there's a 10th planet in our solar system. No shit.
By some experts' opinions it would be the 9th since they, nor I, consider Pluto to be a planet but rather a very, very large astroid floating in a very long orbit. Most astronomers and other cosmologists on a pesonal level agree on this point now that we've seen more of Pluto.
