Novak: "You can't handle the truth! The truth is that conservatives rule the world!! Haven't you sensed that yet?!! Are your senses that dead in the head?!!!! We've ruled the world since 2000! We own the voting machines! We have the armies of loyal bookburners who will march to our tune and harass voters away from voting!! We have the donors who give us their money cause we've made them think god is on OUR side!! We rule the world you little shit! You can't challenge me! .........."
Such arrogance will simply not let someone get away with challenging him. He has to have the last word. I actually think him storming off was probably a wise and disciplined decision. He swallowed his pride, and left with his pride in ruins rather than expose the facts he knows would ruin the project, the 'Liberal Problem'.

I've been meaning to mention this for awhile, actually on Josh Marshall's place where people have talkied about this, but I havn't figure out how to post there. Eschatoninans hang out there too, plus I am Ba'al and I belong here.
There has been speculation about the intended copy of Who's Who on the set where Novac had his hissy fit based on certain flatulant lies from one of his many pustulating orrifices.
One thing worth noting is that Who's Who is a glorified vanity press. I used to be in it myself (when I was younger and stupider I was in the Who's Who in Science version). They don't dig up their own biographical details -- they send you a letter that is very flattering about how Important you are and then send you a page to fill out in which you provide your own biographical details. They then put it into their format. Once you have agreed to it, they will not let up their efforts ever to try to get you to buy a copy of the damned thing-- and it isn't cheap. Perhaps people put it on their coffee tables or something. Also once you have agreed to be in one version (i.e. Who's Who in Science) than the offers to be in others start coming (Who's Who in the South, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Ancient Canaan, Who's Who Among the Undead, etc. etc.). They are absolutely relentless.
Eventually one figures out or is told about their little scam and never responds again.
Given that, it is hard to imagine that entries on Joseph Wilson or Valerie Plame could have contained anything sensitive.

hey, that's what I said! but i'll take it one further - the head honchos at CNN were in on the plot. novakula just shot his wad a little too early (well, he is 70). he was supposed to wait until carville really goaded him, but the show was pretty well along and he worried that he wouldn't get a chance. that's why the censor button wasn't pressed - they weren't ready for him.

I think this story, this Novak story walking off of Crossfire, I think it illustrates the huge disconnect between the mainstream press and the people who watch CNN. Because most people have been asking for 20 years, "What the hell is Bob Novak doing there, and why didn't he walk off sooner?" He's put up with all kinds of BS from other people on this program. He's been insulted; he's been laughed at -- not only on this show, but on the Capitol Gang. I mean, when is CNN going to apologize for the way it covers news these days? When is CNN going to apologize to its viewers for losing viewers? Oh, no! They have to go apologize for Novak uttering the BS term, then walking off. I don't think most people think Novak "cracked." I don't think most people think Novak snapped. I think most people think, "It's about time. Why put up with this anymore? Walk out of there. Who needs this kind of garbage?" Even though it is a show like Crossfire, what do you need to put up with it for? And yet I'm watching the coverage of this, and everybody is worried, "What happened to Novak? Why, he cracked! Why, he snapped. Why, Novak's lost his mind."
Why, no, he has not. He gained some sense yesterday.

There was a site, I can't remember it now, but the guy seemed very well established and had contacts in media who stated that there is growing evidence that Plame was outed as a matter of convenient timing with another growing problem with certain members of the administration. Plame was working on matters of nuclear weapons proliferation. She was said to have been isolating her resources towards companies that were about to orin the process of providing Iran with vital components needed in the production of nuclear weapons and that these companies had ties to members of this administration. More importantly is the accusation that this may have been a deliberate attempt by this administration to secretly 'help nudge' Iran along on it's way towards producing a nuke so that later on they can use it as proof of Iran's nuclear intentions and give them the justification to invade Iran.
Far fetched, but this would be a much larger revelation than just the mere outing of an undercover operative. This would expose the whole admin to frau, corruption, and abuse of power.

STATE PROBES 'KID' LOAN TO AIR AMERIKKKA
August 6, 2005 -- State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer yesterday opened an investigation into the Bronx social-services agency that made $875,000 in bizarre loans to Air Amerikkka radio, The Post has learned.
"We are looking into it in consultation with the city's Department of Investigation," Spitzer spokesman Darren Dopp revealed.
The highly unusual loans to the left-wing radio network were made by the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club — which was visited by one of Spitzer's investigators yesterday, officials said.

The arrival of Timothy Flanigan as Patrick J. Clearly he is losing it and probably faces hanging for treason (yep, it's still on the books). It's likely Fitzgerald's dragnet may sweep within its ambit many administration folks and Novak actually may be some one he has in mind...after all, no one else blabbed.
The publication of this information itself may have been a crime, which puts Novakula very squarely in the shit.

Under current case law, he's a public figure's public figure, and IMHO he can STFU about it. It's totally his fault that he put Ms. Plame's name out there for everyone. Not even Karl Rove is going to be an exemption for that.

Some Bombs Used in Iraq Are Made in Iran, U.S. Says
By ERIC SCHMITT
WASHINGTON, Aug. 5 - Many of the new, more sophisticated roadside bombs used to attack American and government forces in Iraq have been designed in Iran and shipped in from there, United States military and intelligence officials said Friday, raising the prospect of increased foreign help for Iraqi insurgents.
American commanders say the deadlier bombs could become more common as insurgent bomb makers learn the techniques to make the weapons themselves in Iraq.
But just as troubling is that the spread of the new weapons seems to suggest a new and unusual area of cooperation between Iranian Shiites and Iraqi Sunnis to drive American forces out - a possibility that the commanders said they could make little sense of given the increasing violence between the sects in Iraq.
Unlike the improvised explosive devices devised from Iraq's vast stockpiles of missiles, artillery shells and other arms, the new weapons are specially designed to destroy armored vehicles, military bomb experts say. The bombs feature shaped charges, which penetrate armor by focusing explosive power in a single direction and by firing a metal projectile embedded in the device into the target at high speed. The design is crude but effective if the vehicle's armor plating is struck at the correct angle, the experts said.
Since they first began appearing about two months ago, some of these devices have been seized, including one large shipment that was captured last week in northeast Iraq coming from Iran. But one senior military officer said "tens" of the devices had been smuggled in and used against allied forces, killing or wounding several Americans throughout Iraq in the past several weeks.

Most people can't just pack up and move (especially to a another country) on a moment's notice. This may sound a little gory but it's a great cultural experience to see if you happen to be nearby during Easter - or "Holy Week." It's a great sightseeing and one of the best photo opportunities. One of the best
travel photos I've ever taken was shot from crawling on my stomach amongst a dozen others where I was able to capture the silhouette of the nail punctured left hand on the cross.

Journalists' claims to be "not public figures" are particularly ludicrous since so many journalists also claim to "represent the public" or to be acting in the interest of the "public's right to know." They are especially likely to make the latter assertion when prying into the private life of someone they deem to be a public figure.

This morning one of my goats got her head stuck in a weird part of the barn (they explore everything, are totally inquisitive). Anyway I heard the two of em yelling for about an hour - but I was dozing and they're in the juvenile yelling phase - but when I got up and opened the door it was clearly distress yelling - anyway I freed Alice, now it's a couple hours later and they're lounging around their paddock enjoying the nice day. Gonna shut down the computer and join them with my Sue Grafton paperback (which they have halfway trashed in their repeated attempts to eat it.)
Anyway, later bats - and hi from Alice and Marlon

Richard Jewell lost one of his lawsuits because the judge determined that he was a public figure. How did he become a public figure? The judge said immediately after the bombing Jewell gave talked to TV reporters about what he witnessed. That in itself was enough to make him a public figure.

Mother leaves Ł25 for abandoned daughter and moves to Turkey
Martin Wainwright
Saturday August 6, 2005
The Guardian
A bewildered teenager is staying with friends after getting home from school to find Ł25 rolled up in a note saying that her mother and older sister had gone to start a new life in Turkey.
Police and social services are investigating how an apparent family tiff turned into something much more drastic, to the astonishment of a small Yorkshire village where everyone knows everyone else and most of their business.

Time Warner Cable finds refusing to give money to a Texas politician can have strange consequences.
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle
...Texas state Rep. Corbin Van Arsdale ...implies that Time Warner Cable's political action committee tried to bribe him by refusing to make a contribution.
After the Tomball Republican sent Time Warner's PAC a solicitation letter last month, executive Ron McMillan politely declined by noting that Van Arsdale had supported a telecommunications bill opposed by the cable industry and "our PAC committee cannot support you at this time."
In a reply to McMillan, the lawmaker seized on the phrase "at this time" as an inference that if he changed his vote, he might get a contribution later. As reported by the Chronicle's R.G. Ratcliffe, Van Arsdale wrote, "I don't want to attach incorrect intentions to this language, but the words struck me as Time Warner PAC hinging their campaign contributions on a particular vote on a particular bill." ... the legislator sent copies of his letter to the district attorneys in Austin and Houston.
..The idea that depriving a politician of his desired campaign contribution constitutes a bribe is certainly an original interpretation of the Texas election code. Much more suspect is Van Arsdale's soliciting money from a PAC with a prime interest in a bill before the Legislature.
Van Arsdale, a conservative who opposes frivolous lawsuits, seems to be blazing his own trail in the field of frivolous complaints. To wean him of the habit, more Texans at this time should just say no to his solicitations.

I guess Harry Truman is a war criminal.
Curtis LeMay pretty much admitted that had we lost the war, our leaders would've been put on trial for war crimes.
But I don't presume to judge the folks making decisions back then. I think dropping the bomb was unnecessary and immoral, but I understand that I also have the luxury of 20/20 hindsight and a different historical frame of reference shaped by the aftermath of that decision. I'm more concerned about learning the lessons and applying them to the insane policies our current leaders are executing.

Troll logic at its best. It comes here, says we hate the troops, then when we say we don't hate them, it says our statement that we don't hate them is proof that our sentiment is not genuine because we're always saying we don't hate them after being accused of hating them.

why are you folks playing the trolls game?
they can't crow about bush but they sure can attempt to belittle the humans.
OT, but good one from over at Kos re: the White House stonewalling of producing memos for the Roberts' hearings. Choice passage (and I esp. like the last paragraph):
...What BushCo is REALLY doing is invoking Executive Privilege, not attorney client privilege. Seen in this manner, we can understand how brazen and audacious this stonewall from BushCo is. What Bush is saying to the Senate is that even though you want these memos in the exercise of your Constitutional duty to advise and consent on the naming of a Supreme Court Justice, we don't care. We don't want you to see these memos, even thought the documents clearly are no longer sensitive or timely, they are at least 12 years old after all.
What this means is Bush is prepared to provoke a Constitutional crisis, this is no hyperbole, a clash between the Executive and Legislative branches, over 12 year old memos that are clearly not relevant or important to any current matter being considered by the Executive branch.
What should the Senate do in the face of this outrageous tactic of White House obstruction and stonewall? I think it is obvious -- not consider the Roberts' nomination until the documents are produced.
For the institution of the Senate, this should be a matter of principle. To allow this outrageous abuse by the White House of the Senate is to allow the Senate to become subordinate to the White House. So much for co-equal branches.
Do I expect the Republicans and their pundit allies to insist on defending the principle of separation of powers, after all their pontificating on this principle over the years? Do pigs fly?
Gee, guy, if we're putting you to sleep here why don't you just go crawl off into that race car bed your mommy bought for you and get comfortable?

It's pretty fucking hard to defend what you don't have, you cowardly chickenshited brownshirt motherfucker.
OK, one more: The unevolved slime that made the contemptible comment about toonscribe's relative is absolutely and totally representative of the type of person who supports George W. Bush and his treasonous administration.
And you Republicans have the burden of proving that you are actually not in agreement with his/her sick spewings.

Hey Toby:
Instead of stinking up the joint,
why aren't you updating your piece
of shit blog that nobody ever
comments at?
You know, I usually don't directly respond to anything these pathetic brownshirted motherfuckers say, but this time I'm going to make an exception:
Get the fuck out of here. You've got your own blog where you can spew your worthless, incoherant bullshit to your heart's content. The fact that NOBODY ever visits it should give you a clue that nobody with a brain in their head gives a fuck what you have to say. The only reason you persist in posting here is so you can jerk off to the abuse. You're a cowardly little chickenhawk prick, you're not welcome here, you're postings are drooling ramblings that people only respond to so they can make fun of you. Find a dom and a dungeon and get the fuck out of here.
We get it, Toby. You are an amoral piece of shit and that goes for the rest of the trolls.

One of the few from the Nixon Admin. who was actually convicted, sentenced, and served for crimes against the United States of America.
I live in Boston. I do tend to stay home on Friday nights, as well as the weekend nights.
I really don't drink, and certainly don't drink where the booze is expensive, and one is surrounded by either loud obnoxious sports fanatics, drunken fratboys or yuppie types, looking to get laid.
There are a couple of local places that are fine quiet establishments for people to meet and enjoy a drink or two, sans chants of "YANKEES SUCK!", projectile vomiting and conspicuous rutting.
But, as I siad, I don't drink.
Neither do I seek to get laid with the same desperate frenzy as our anon troll seems to think is "normal". Waking up next to someone whose name you cannot remember is not something to be proud of.
But that's just me.
But, finally, I think why we keep seeing the same names here all the time, is that we enjoy the conversation and silliness as an anodyne to the daily horroshow that is the news.
On a Saturday night, we can liveblog the SciFi original movie and forget, for two hours, what awful things are occurring in the world.
Beats getting drunk, fucking some equally drunk skag (of either sex) and awaking in a pool of vomit.
Hopefully our own vomit.
But feel free to keep trolling, little asswipe. We find it amusing, in the same way we find GWB trying to think and speak and listen to the voice in his earpiece at the same time amusing.

Being away most of the week has one benefit, no Toby.
I haven't read the whole thread but if no one has said it, Novak isn't a public figure in exactly the same way that Sully's bareback ads complete with nude neck down views (excellent emetic, btw) consititute his privacy.

I'm a journalist, on TV sometimes. I write for a big enough publication that I see my stories cited elsehwhere. I'm kind of lower middle class on the public recognition scale. But... I am a public figure. I mean, part of my job involves prying into other people's lives, taking their lives public. If that's what I do, then I have to accept that it could happen to me. I've been fortunate, actually, because some of the things I've written have led to or helped various federal indictments, but the investigators, in those cases, have preferred to build the cases on their own. I've talked to some of them, who say they reconstructed my stories. In all cases, I called them, after seeing a release or news item about the indictment. In all cases, the investigators said that the story gave them the idea but that they then reconstructed the facts on their own and that the prefer to do it that way. That's great to know. See, they don't want to indict somebody unless they personally believe, beyond reasonable doubt, that they'll succeed in prosecuting.
My point is... I've been close to having my work brought into an investigation. I really never want that to happen because, like all journos, I do have off the record sources, and yet, still... I make my living bringing stories to the public. So, in a sense, I'm public, even if I'm not rich and famous like Novak.
All I know is this... every month, I have a rent check due and every day, food ain't free. I pay those bills by writing things that I and my publisher hopes that the public will read. So, it'd be hard for me to claim not to be a somewhat public figure.

Here's my yardstick: Journalists by and large should be accorded rights as private citizens. It's none of our f***ing business what they do or think in their private lives and I categorically do NOT buy into any theories about journalists refraining from doing stories about bad people if they can't hold their own lives up as sin-free.
That said, the hack ideologue Robert Novak is NOT a journalist, first of all, and second, he long ago crossed the line into being a public figure. The minute you choose to publicize yourself, go on talk shows, grant interviews, take political stands and promote them, you're a public figure whehter you're Bob Novak or a real journalist. Push a book? Join the ranks of public figures.

Quite simply, Novak is NO LONGER a "public figure." Saying it makes it so, if we believe in ourselves.

Atrios, are you a public person?
If I were on a jury deciding a case of libel against you, I would say you are not, that your privacy deserves maximum protection. I'd say the same for Mike M.
You are nationally known, but not because of your personal life. Nor are you employed by the public. You are trying to report news, not make it.
Now, Novak may have crossed the line into being a public figure because he has made news. People have a reason to discuss his personal behavior, at least as it relates to acting as a Republican operative rather than a journalist.
But I think Rosen may be pointing to a genuine issue. Let's defend one another's right to privacy, while also defending the freedom to discuss legitimate issues of public interest.

Charles, I appreciate what you're saying howevr, even though to a lesser extent than Novak... I do depend on the public to make my living and I also bring the lives of other private citizens public in order to do so. Believe me, if CNN were to call and offer me a regular commentary slot, that I could use to promote all of the various writings I do, I'd take it! I'm never for criminalizing journalism and I even disagree with most of what's said here about Miller, but... even I have a hard time believing that I can get paid by the public and be compltely private.
