Dems, once again throw in the towel when faced with the right-wing noise machine I especially like how Kerrey said the public wont tolerate going to far. I gues outing a CIA agent, smearing 3 war veterans, and saying dems are interested in cuddling terrorist is not going to far, Fucking wimps:
"You could see from Naral pulling their ads down that the public is not going to tolerate going too far," said Bob Kerrey, a former Democratic senator from Nebraska, who says Democrats will face difficulty if they frame the Roberts nomination solely in terms of abortion rights. "By all accounts it looks like he is going to get confirmed. So they are in a very difficult position."

"Some Democrats argue that their senators should not make too much fuss about Judge Roberts so the party can move on to other issues like embryonic stem cell research, the war in Iraq, a leak investigation involving presidential adviser Karl Rove that pack more political punch."
Where have we heard this before. Lets vote for this war so we can move on to economic issues. Lets pass this tax cut and bankrupcy bill, so we can move on to energy issues. Lets pass the energy bill so we can move on to Iraq

I always know that when I'm struck by a topic or comment, and furrow my brow to compose a long-winded meditation upon it, that at least two new threads will have appeared when I finally "publish". Most vexing!
Of course, I am constantly in trouble at work because I have a production job that involves writing, and I have been repeatedly urged to the point of disciplinary action to stop getting behind because of my compulsion to be wordy and detailed.
Thus, I am a living refutation of Intelligent Design. Surely the Designer would appreciate my inconvenient approach and allow me to prosper, instead of justifiably perishing because I am unable or unwilling to adapt.

Here is the "liberal" NYT yet again in an editorial telling a liberal group to apologize:
"If Naral Pro-Choice America wants to regain credibility after its 30-second TV spot linking Judge John Roberts Jr. with abortion clinic violence, it should start with an apology."
Did the NYT ask the RNC to apologize for trashing Cleland and Hackett? Did the NYT ask Bush to apologize for swift boating Kerry? Did the NYT ask Santorum to apologize for his Nazi comparison? Did Rove apologize for saying liberals want to cuddle with terrorist. At some point there is going to have to be a coordinated effort from liberal groups to point out every time they engage in IOKIYARism.

The only "out" for the NYT in those cases would be to claim that those cases were part of an election cycle, and therefore a different case.

Three active duty soldiers from Ft. Hood came to visit me and tell me that they really appreciated what I was doing and that if they were killed in the war, their moms would be doing the same thing. That made me feel so good after all of the negativity I had been hearing from the righties. I also got to hold a couple of toddlers on my lap while their mom or dad took pictures of us. "The decision by the abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America to pull an incendiary ad attacking President Bush's nominee to the Supreme Court has produced a fresh round of recriminations within the Democratic Party and a return to a nagging question: Has the opposition lost its nerve?"
Amid similar criticism against another controversial ad, most Republicans brushed aside demands to repudiate Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group that had taken aim at John F. Kerry's war record. Some Democrats said the difference revealed on their side an ambivalence about modern political combat that helps explain why their party is out of power.
"Republicans don't mind running an ad that's entirely false, but Democrats have never learned, and I'm not sure many of them want to learn, how to play that kind of politics," said Robert Shrum, an adviser to several Democratic presidential campaigns. NARAL had to pull the ad, he said, because "they weren't getting support from any substantial quarter."

"Bill Clinton was afraid that any negative publicity associated with arresting them would hurt Hillary's chance at being elected President."
Let's see. Clinton arrests a bunch of people involved in a conspiracy to kill thousands of people and this nutcase thinks this would be negative publicity. And now they are trying to claim that Sandy Berger was stuffing this info about these people into his socks. And of course, they conveniently forget that Bush had nearly eight months to act on all this and did nothing.

I came here so angry and I have been so encouraged and overwhelmed by the support from all over. I was thinking that there is no reason for us progressive liberals to be angry anymore. We have the power.
People sometimes overlook the last bit of the first amendment -- 'or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.' -- but I think it's possibly more important than the first bits.

More dme wimpery:
"The NARAL case was the latest incident to provoke Democratic recriminations. In June, Democrats demanded that Bush aide Karl Rove apologize for saying that liberals wanted "therapy and understanding for our attackers." Rove refused to apologize, and Republicans leapt to his defense. Just before the Rove episode, Republicans demanded an apology from Richard J. Durbin (Ill.), the number two Democrat in the Senate, who likened U.S. treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay to techniques used by Nazis. Democrats joined in criticizing Durbin, who eventually delivered a tearful apology on the Senate floor.
Republicans say that they have been no more severe or dishonest in their rhetoric than the Democrats, and that they are no more apt to circle the wagons than Democrats are. "They play as nasty and as dirty as you can," said GOP strategist Grover Norquist, who called the NARAL ad a success because "they got the cheap shot out there."

A decade ago, when I first glimpsed the dominant right-wing internet debate "style," my first reaction was "Damn, these guys sound like they have rabies." Their relentless foaming at the mouth both intrigued and repelled me, and I nicknamed them the "right-wing foamers." In IRC chat channels, when the vitriol and irrational spewing rose to dangerously high levels, I'd make remarks like "Warning to all chatters: We're currently experiencing a serious outbreak of right-wing foaming at the mouth, so make sure you've had your rabies shots!" or "Damn, the right-wing foaming at the mouth is bad today -- the foam's almost up to my knees in here!"

Why is it that no matter how outrageous a claim or ad is, the republicans NEVER, back down or apologize.
Not to excuse the Dem's general wimpiness, but I think the difference in behavior may have something to do with a fundamental difference in the nature of the beast. To wit:
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts." -- Bertrand Russell
Another important element is, when the Rethugs metaphorically rub their opponents face in the dirt, who is it really that has to suffer the insult? Minorities, gays, vulnerable women, the poor - people who are far removed from the levers of power.
Conversely, if the Dems collectively suddenly grew balls and starting giving as good as they got, who would they be pissing off? Primarily the very same corporate moneybags they plan on hitting up for contributions at their next fundraiser.
It's the difference between kicking sand in the face of the 98 lb. weakling, versus biting the hand that feeds. Call it a built-in systemic flaw that forces the Dems to be circumspect, while allowing the Repukes to be as outrageous as they please without ever having to worry about suffering any adverse consequences.

Sorry if this has been posted already, but lookee here:
UNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- A California man -- allegedly armed with two guns, a large knife and over 200 rounds of ammunition -- was arrested Thursday as he tried to enter a United Nations parking garage, authorities said.
Vernon J. Welker, 59, is to face charges of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police detective Kevin Czartoryski said.
He said Welker had a .22-caliber revolver, a .22-caliber Winchester rifle and a large knife in his car when he tried to enter the U.N. parking garage about 10:30 a.m. ET. Czartoryski said both guns were loaded and that Welker had more than 200 rounds of ammunition.
Authorities said Welker tried to enter the garage at 3 U.N. Plaza, which is commonly used by U.N. workers.
He was taken to a Manhattan police station and will be arraigned Friday in a New York criminal court.
Czartoryski said Welker gave no indication why he was carrying the weapons.
Calls to Welker's home in Salton City, California, went unanswered.
Salton City is a small Southern California community about 80 miles east of Oceanside.

Yes, exactly. Thugs defend each other out of the most primitive tribalism, no matter how appalling their behavior is.

usually it's a group of guys who're ostensibly playing something like GURPS or D20:Modern and are instead sitting around arguing about the game effects of the various types of guns and how "unrealistic" they are.
Well, if the effects were "realistic" you wouldn't have much of a game, would you? Because IRL most weapons, when used properly, are "one shot kill" weapons. That's "not fun" in a game envirnment, especially when you've got a PvP (Player vs. Player) scenario.
Which is why those guys are fucktards. They don't get it.

JERUSALEM - In a stern warning to Iran, President Bush said "all options are on the table" if the Iranians refuse to comply with international demands to halt their nuclear program, pointedly noting he has already used force to protect U.S. security.
Bush's statement during an interview on Israeli TV late Friday was unusually harsh. He previously said diplomacy should be used to persuade Iran to suspend its nuclear program and if that failed then the U.N. Security Council should impose sanctions.
The U.S. government and others fear Iran's nuclear work is secretly designed to produce nuclear weapons. Iran's leaders deny that, saying it is only for the generation of electricity.
In the interview, Bush said the United States and Israel "are united in our objective to make sure that Iran does not have a weapon."
But, he said, if diplomacy fails "all options are on the table."
"The use of force is the last option for any president. You know, we've used force in the recent past to secure our country," he said.
Uh-oh, the chickenhawk is rattling his sword again, with his typical BS spin on Iraq to boot. I bet Iran is laughing at him, knowing he can't back up his tough talk.

And they are the focus of my anger- pimps like Atrios, who cynically take the regrettable phrase ‘media whore,’ and render it into more fodder for the masses, who, themselves awash in outrage, blinded by hatred for Bush, will throw critical reasoning aside, and see nothing wrong with outright lies, as long as it helps their cause:
I guess it depends on what your meaning of the word "whore" is.
Does using an adjective to modify a noun strip that noun of its previous meaning.
For example, does modifying "man" with "black" take away from the meaning of the word "man".
if I say "black man" does that (for conservatives) mean that a "black man" isn't a "man"?
But, he said, if diplomacy fails "all options are on the table."
oh man, "all options"? last time he said that, it meant that that was the only option.

OT(but speaking of Rove and people standing by things he says): Has the Thursday AP article about Rove been discussed?
On Americablog they pointed out that "Rove may have violated the federal false statements statute if he lied to Bush about his role in Plamegate. (And if he told Bush the truth, then Bush has been concealing evidence in national security investigation.)
(a) Except as otherwise provided in this section, whoever, in any

(3) makes or uses any false writing or document knowing the
same to contain any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent

"The remarkably humorous bit of all of this is that while Mrs. Sheehan is using the body of a dead solider to get her fifteen minutes of fame,"
I hae my own personal opinions on Cindy Sheehan. Particularly her bizarre willingness to discuss how religious and whatever bullshit religious speak is, about the president when she first met him. Then goes back on this, but without laying blame. She wants answers? But for some reason doesnt want to blame bush for the problems because he's a man of faith?
Total dimwit if you ask me.
But that quote above from that Erik freak at commie-red state.org takes the cake.
This is her son he's talking about and he says she's abusing his corpse by making a stand about the war?
She is like any other caring mother who wants to know why their child is dead should they ever find out. Should her son have died in an auto accident then she would demand to know whether it was a legitimate accident, or the result of gross or criminal negligence such as being drunk or fooling around with a date, whether it was her son that was at fault or the other driver.
Parents demand answers. It is needed for closure. It helps them to settle down and move on with the rest of their lives. But somehow idiots like this Erik are as capable of deeper thinking enough to realize this as a rock.
Really. I'm totally not surprised at this in the slightest. Everyone on the right's a f*cking expert on human psychology on these things and can easily tell whether you're a traitor or a stand up guy, all the while not knowing that guy one damned bit beyond some minor stunt they might pull that pleases you.

you said:
"The only thing that would worry me is that ruthlessness works a lot better when the media is on your side. If it's against you, then there's a danger of being painted as wacko extremists. "
This is the main defect of elected dems-that they care about what the media thinks. Do repubs care? Did Hackett care about how he would look when he called Bush a chickenhawk SOB?When Kerry listened to the media and threw a gentle DNC convention, and the repubs ignored the media and threw purple band-aid fest, who ended up winning? Dems need to say that we are going to ignore the right wing media-even when they are refering to NBCBSABCNNMSNBC. Just keep on repeating it. The media will never help a dem, so why pay attention to it. When a dem wins the WH, start treating the media like shit-like how Cheney treats the media. When they whine, tell them them that we will cut off acess to you. Start playing the game.

The Republicans ignore the media because they know the media has got their back.
A good, clear, forceful message can cut through the media, but it has to be pretty tight not to get twisted. And even with that caveat, I still think they could safely be a lot more forceful than they are right now.

"Cindy Sheehan is nothing more than a deranged woman who has become a threat to our nation. It is so maddening it is to see this, this liberal attitude that because you have lost a child in the war, you are suddenly some kind of an expert on military strategy.
As far as I’m concerned, we’d all be better off if Ms. Sheehan and her friends were shipped off to Gitmo."
Nice comment at John Cole's site.

Remember when he was all about the thread, the anger, and the music? He's changed, man.
I think we might have to kick him out of the band. I'm not happy about it, but we gotta get back to our roots. It's what our #1 fan, Casey Sheehan, would want.
hahahah!
"next, on Behind the Music:
From an upstart group of thinkers to a band, the anger-pimps were on top of the world...
But an hour later, dissension threatened to tear it all apart..."

John Cole does disown him, though. So that's nice. Michelle Malkin would not have.

That does it: I'm going solo. I'm sick of having my creativity stifled and being shoved to the side by that 'John Lennon wannabe' Atrios. Fuck you all!

BTW, I'm not saying I'm going out on my own yet. Just getting ready for the inevitable split, so I'll have my speech ready.

Apparently so. and he brought a 16-piece band with him.
And they're performing 'Smile,' and Mike Love will be nowhere in sight. Life's good.

Speaking of Brian Wilson. I'd like to make an album someday, for all the heads out there. I'd call it
I will not be lectured about critical reasoning or group-think by a foam-at-the-mouth Bush apologist.

I'm going to see Brian Wilson tonight.
Saw him last November at Davies Symphony Hall in SF. Think he's still doing the same show. They open with an "unplugged" Beach Boys Party-esque set of his early hits backed by acoustic guitars and bongos. Then move into full electric band with horn and string back-up for the mid-60s to "Pet Sounds" number ("God Always Know" is always a highlight). Then an intermission, when they come back and do the full "Smile" cycle.
This is the greatest band he's ever had, and I'm including the "Wrecking Crew" of his studio work. They can fucking do anything, musically or vocally.
You bet I'm going to enjoy it. The venue is on the beach on the South Shore of LI, and we got $20 seats (at a Clear Channel venue, no less) that will put us high enough in the house to be able to enjoy the show and ocean-gaze at the same time.
I've been to probably thousands of shows over the past 30 years, and rarely have I been this jacked to go and see a concert.
Thanks for the summary.

Liberals fled the GOP years ago. Maybe liberals should just leave the Democrats as well. I don't think either party will ever again support liberal causes.

>"I think the pimps in the anti-war left..."<
This says it all. Those who oppose WAR are pimps.
WAR is the scourge of humanity; the disease we know how to cure yet cannot because of the obtuse insistence of troglodites among us who know that WAR is glorious! WAR is nothing more or less than collective murder. There is self-defensive collectve murder as with the Allies of WWII and there is premeditated collective murder as in Hitler, Mussolini & Tojo bent on expansion, Johnson & Nixon in Vietnam, Reagan in Grenada, Bush I in Panama & Iraq, Bush II in Iraq (completing his daddy's job), all Republicans except Johnson. What if my neighborhood association decided to gang up and capture the homes of a weaker adjacent association with the self-justifying lies that always accompany wrongdoing? There are always those who would do these things if it can be done collectively, thereby diluting any residue of guilt. And if they can win, there is no guilt, for to the victors go the spoils and the prerogative of writing the history.

It's projection again.
The ones who call Cindy Sheehan a "whore" look like two dollar hookers themselves).
The males have a shitty attitude towards women who don't agree with them.
Projection, folks, projection! They accuse everyone of being what they are!

Anytime any of those Cheeto eating, Kool Aid guzzling Nazi assholes think they can ship me off anyplace, I invite them to give it a shot.

They sure do like their prostitution metaphors ... "Cindy Sheehan is a whore." "Atrios is a pimp."

Yeah, I noticed that, too.
Is that all they think of is sex?
Probably because they're not getting any!
