Can we bring back the public stocks? Seriously, can we? I mean, we can make it into a reality tv show
Because we all know liberals never make hateful or trollish remarks. (rolls eyes)
Actually I find the right and left wing of the blogsphere remarkably similar in some ways.
The way people post recipes here in response to trolling is very similar to the way thy used to talk about "Mr. Holland's Opus" on LGF (they stopped doing that when they found out Richard Dreyfus was a liberal who supported the Palestinians).
But that's as far as tone goes. I don't see anybody on the left advocating internment of people because of their race. I don't see people standing in the way of gay marriage or advocating more restrictions on civil liberties.
The culture of the internets is pretty quirky and self-contained. It tends to be the same with or without politics. But you can't ignore the real, substantive differences.

On his way out the door, Deputy Attorney General James Comey, who chose junkyard dog Patrick Fitzgerald to run the Plame scandal investigation, has chosen senior junkyard dog David Margolis to supervise Fitzgerald once Comey leaves.
...
So the risk that Bush would put a Bones buddy in to put a lid on Fitzgerald turns out to have been chimerical. In any case, the Bonesman in question, Timothy Flanigan, doesn't seem likely to take office soon, if ever. Turns out there's a little matter of Flanigan's having hired Jack Abramoff as a lobbyist."
Backslider will also appreciate the Willie Nelson reference...

Still Hiding the Bush Bulge
Spiking of story an “internal matter,” Pasadena paper says
Extra! July/August 2005
Dave Lindorff
Pasadena residents didn’t get to read about the exploits of local celebrity Dr. Robert Nelson, who, besides being a Jet Propulsion Lab photo analyst who helped present those dramatic photos of Saturn’s rings and moons, also gave the lie to White House claims that the bulge seen on Bush’s back during the presidential debates was “just a wrinkle.”
They didn’t get to read Nelson’s account of how his photo analysis of Bush’s jacket—a story that would have increased speculation that the president was wearing a hearing device during the debates—almost made it into the New York Times before being killed by top editor Bill Keller (Extra!, 1–2/05).

I don't know, Robert. It's kind of comforting to have a tame troll on hand. You generally keep your posts short enough to skip over easily if one is not in the mood for it. There were trolls in the early days who were not nearly so well housebroken, and since you seem to keep this up as though it was your full time job, we don't have to worry about the others feeling they need to pile on most days.
The fact that you can actually spell is a point in your favor as well. And since this is the internet, even if you don't bathe regularly it doesn't matter too much.

not funny (pathetic)
"Our mission in Iraq is tough because the enemy understands the stakes. The terrorists know that a free Iraq in the heart of the Middle East will be a crippling blow to their hateful ideology," Bush said. "And that is why our work in Iraq is a vital part of the war on terror we're waging around the world.
"This war on terror arrived on our shores on September the 11th, 2001. Since that day, the terrorists have continued to kill -- in Madrid, Istanbul, Jakarta, Casablanca, Riyadh, Bali, Baghdad, London, and elsewhere. The enemy remains determined to do more harm," he said.

Just who is making the decisions for President Bush? Clearly, that person or those people are making disastrous, deadly, and really poor decisions day after day. If it's Rove he should be fired outright (before he's hauled off in cuffs) for such pitiful advice. At what point did the Bush braintrust come up with the notion of just ignoring her? A 30-minute talk the first day Mrs. Sheehan showed up would have probably put an end to it. Surely Bush's "handlers" could have helped him memorize the reasons he feels all the death and destruction are "noble." The decision to "wait it out" has meant hundreds more protesters and a world-wide audience for her AND a PR and political disaster for him (I should add ANOTHER disaster for him).

You know, this reminds me of the time I tried to explain to my sister that Mr. Athenae and I argue all the time, morning noon and night, but rarely fight.
She said, "I've heard you. You fight all the time."
I said no, we argue. An argument is "I think you're wrong and here's why."
A fight is "You're wrong because you're stupid and an asshole and I hate you."
Trolling can be identified in much the same manner.

WGG,
They don't always do a perp walk. A perp walk requires them to notify the press to be at a certain place at a certain time. They do it when they want to embarass the defendant or give him/her bad publicity or when they want to publicize a big "get". Given Mr. Abrahamoff's powerful friends, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there'd been no perp walk.

Isn't it mind boggling how events get turned on their head and made to serve our enemies? Millions believe the spin.
It is exasperating ... and it is happening before our very eyes. President Bush has been attacked by so many sources and has managed to remain calm, resolved, steadfast, and not returning tit for tat.

It is mind boggling...but with the internet, we have the power to turn it around on them and that is exactly what is going to happen with Cindy Sheehan.

As a sidenote -- last night the local NBC affiliate did a segment on Sheehan. The reporter said that when Sheehan first arrived in Crawford reporters could walk right up to her for interviews, but as this week went on, layer after layer of handlers had to be penetrated to gain access, and they wondered where the $$$ came from for Sheehan's entourage. I wish they'd taken it a step further with pictures of Soros and Moore.

Voices repeating me
'Feeling threatened?
We reflect your hopes and fears.'
Voices discussing me
Don't expect your own Messiah
This neverworld which you desire
is only in your mind.
U.S. Rep. Bob Ney
2438 Rayburn House Office Bldg.
Washington, D.C. 20515
Dear Congressman Ney:
We are very concerned by facts reported this weekend by The Washington Post regarding your involvement with the sale of a Florida cruise line, SunCruz Casinos.
As you know, the sale involved the lobbyist and House Majority Leader Tom DeLay ally Jack Abramoff, financial fraud, and possible mob influence in the gangland-style shooting of the seller.
As public interest groups concerned with government ethics we are shocked that, as an eastern Ohio Congressman, you decided to involve yourself as a member of the House with a business deal that had so little to do with your constituents’ interests.
With regard to the story in The Washington Post, headlined, “Untangling a Lobbyist’s Stake in a Casino Fleet: With Millions of Dollars Unaccounted for, Another Federal Investigation Targets Abramoff,” we request that you set the record straight as to your involvement in the incidents reported, as follows:
1. When Michael Scanlon, the former DeLay spokesman and then-Abramoff business partner), asked you to make March, 2000 Congressional Record remarks targeting SunCruz founder Gus Boulis, did you or your staff ever ask him why you should do such a thing?
2. Why did you feel that SunCruz Casinos and Gus Boulis’s business practices in Florida were relevant to your duties representing your constituents in the 18th District of Ohio?
3. Why, in your Congressional record remarks, did you single Boulis out for attack and call for a federal investigation of his business practices? As The Washington Post reported, the effect of these remarks was to exert pressure on Boulis to agree to the sale terms proposed by Abramoff and Adam Kidan.
The Bush brain trust? Where the fuck did you come up with that Above the Clouds? These fuckers don't have a damned brain between the lot of them.

Oh, and again from "Not funny"'s comments:
There comes a point when one must let go of the grief and/or rage over the loss of a loved one. After that, the grief and/or rage takes over your life.
This from the people who are STILL trying to get political advantage from the grief & rage over 9/11. THAT is a tragedy they don't want anyone to be able to "let go of".

Yeah, this will really help the anti - war agenda: preying on an obviously mentally ill, grieving mother. Can anyone actually believe that she wasn’t goaded into doing this by her erstwhile “supporters?”
Oh, yes - anyone who opposes this war must be mentally ill.
So, 60% of the country is mentally ill?

Sorry to keep going OT on Abramoff, but it's too hard to wait for an open thread!
I skimmed the WaPo article, but missed this the first time- "Unlike Kidan, who was permitted to surrender to authorities in Florida and to put up a $500,000 personal bond, the FBI arrested and jailed Abramoff while he was on a business trip to Los Angeles with his 12-year-old daughter, sending a clear message about the gravity of the case."
With that I went over to look, but couldn't find the link. Any help would be appreciated.

Some of us could have happily lived our entire lives without ever conjuring those alternatives.
wow -- somebody critical made it onto "Least Loved Bedtime Stories":
Secondly, regarding this post, do you kiss your mother with that mouth? I mean, really, it’s a Mom we’re talking about. Not Michael Moore. Not whatever FoxNews is telling you she is. Just a Mom. Or are you with the whole mediawhore thing?
Do you really want to see a Mother in stocks? Really? No, really? Y’know, locked up in the town square, her arms and legs sticking out of a splintery wooden contraption. Seeing every passerby be able to spit in her face. Or pee on her. Or break her fingers and toes - I mean, it’s not she can stop you, right? That’s what the stocks are for, right?
She’s a woman who lost her son in a war she doesn’t believe in. That’s an American viewpoint, whether you believe it or not. So’s the ability to camp outside a public figure’s home - see the right of peaceful assembly in the Constitution.
But y’all must be right: she’s mentally ill and should be put in the stockade! Would you advocate the same for your mother if she was upset enough by your death to do the same? Really, would you? Your mom in the stocks?
Think. If there’s anything God might have given you, it would be the ability to think… and walk in someone else’s shoes for just a microsecond.

Cindy's "politicized" her son's death as an attempt to get people to wake up and question the madness that King George the Drunk has given us.
Bush politized the murder of 3000+ people to stop his slide in the polls and prevent him from being the first President to be run outta town on a rail during their first year in office.

THEY KILLED HIM METHINKS
Friends, associates of Boulis shocked, concerned, silent
By JEFF SHIELDS Sun-Sentinel
Web-posted: 6:28 a.m. Feb. 9, 2001
The shooting death of maverick businessman Konstantinos "Gus" Boulis has cast a pall of fear over the people who knew him, with some of his closest associates admitting concern at being connected with a man targeted by hit men.
"I was a little shaken myself," said one of his advisers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "It's not every day you (know) someone, and they're blown away five minutes later."
Most of Boulis' closest business partners, including R. Donahue Peebles and new SunCruz Casino executives, and legal advisers retreated behind company-issued news releases expressing shock and extending condolences to his family. Friends didn't return calls from reporters.
Boulis was gunned down about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, just after leaving the office of his company, Atlantia Holdings at 910 SE 17th St. in Fort Lauderdale. Atlantia staffers remained similarly silent Thursday, referring calls to a public relations agency.
Even police were having difficulty with some people.
"There are a lot of people who aren't talking for reasons of personal safety," said Fort Lauderdale Police Detective Mike Reed.
SunCruz president Adam Kidan, who said Boulis had threatened to kill him, was traveling overseas on Thursday and wouldn't disclose which country he was in when reached on his cell phone. He declined to comment on Boulis' death, referring to Tuesday's company statement "out of respect" for Boulis.
Another associate declined to discuss anything about Boulis.
"I've got my family to worry about," he said, again on condition of anonymity. "The right word is just shock."
Boulis left a long list of broken business deals, and many people held grudges against him. Both his wife and his long-time girlfriend had at one time obtained restraining orders against him, and Hollywood's anti-development forces considered him the scourge of Hollywood Beach.
Sometimes his acquaintances were both friends and adversaries at the same time.
DeWayne Williams, who was a partner in SunCruz ships in Jacksonville and South Carolina, spent the weeks before Boulis' death complaining of how Boulis and the new owners of SunCruz cheated him out of his interests. But, after Boulis' death, Williams stopped returning phone calls and his attorney said the legal problems never came between them.
"They were friends, and they remained friends," said Tony Leon, Williams' attorney. " They were not enemies by any stretch of the imagination."
Staff Writer Ardy Friedberg contributed to this report.
Jeff Shields can be reached at jshields@sun-sentinel.com or 954-385-7921.

"SIL had helped gather anthropological information on the Tarascan Indians that ended up in Nelson Rockefeller's intelligence files. The files contained cross-references to reveal behavioral patterns among Indian peoples in everything from socialization (including aggressive tendencies) and personality traits, drives, emotions, and language structure, to political intrigue, kinship ties, traditional authority, mineral resources, exploitation, and labor relations. Rockefeller called these data the Strategic Index of Latin America."

Half-price Colombian fighters offered for Iraq
A US company operating out of Ecuador says it has signed up about 1,000 Colombian police and military staff to work as hired guns in Iraq, for less than half of their US counterparts' salaries.
Colombians "have been fighting terrorists for the past 41 years and are experts in their respective areas" such as explosives and guerrilla warfare, Epi Security and Investigation says on its website, iraqijobcenter.com.
The company based in the Ecuadoran city of Manta is run by American Jeffrey Shippy, who is in Baghdad, according to his Ecuadoran wife.
He works out of his home not far from the Manta air base Washington rented from the Ecuadoran Air Force to relocate some of the troops and planes it used to have in Panama.
The Colombian daily El Tiempo reported Friday that the Colombians would be paid $US2,500 to $US5,000 a month, roughly half what their US and British counterparts earn.

For all the women who look down on their ample thighs with loathing: Fret no more. There is new reason to love that dimpled plumpness.
For many people, mainly women, fat on legs, hips, and buttocks may actually help ward off heart disease and diabetes, recent research suggests.
University of Colorado researchers reported this week that in a study of 95 women past menopause, being bottom-heavy was linked to better scores on several ominous markers in the blood, including triglycerides and high sugar levels. When women were also heavy above the waist, most advantages of the leg fat vanished, but thick thighs still improved their scores on triglycerides, potentially harmful fats in the blood.
''Our body of research, as well as some others, suggest that leg fat is good fat," said Rachael Van Pelt, the lead researcher on this week's study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. ''It's protective, at least with respect to the risk factors we've looked at."
Researchers are not sure exactly why leg fat carries benefits, but this latest study complements the growing understanding that all fat is not alike. In recent years it has become clearer that ''visceral fat," which wraps around organs and swells waistlines, poses the greatest health danger, while ''peripheral fat" on arms and legs is more benign and, according to recent research, may even be helpful.
Researchers caution that their work does not translate into advice to gain or retain excess weight. Though people tend toward either a bottom-heavy pear shape or a top-heavy apple shape, there is no way to gain only peripheral fat without gaining visceral fat, as well.
But researches say that it raises questions about liposuction and whether surgically removing thigh fat is a good idea.

Well, that particular bit of information is pretty much as given and proven. Fat tummies are bad for both genders. Fat bottoms not so much. Visceral fat is very bad, for a number of reasons, most of them having to do with the metabolism of insulin and the spin offs concerning the heart and cholesterol. As for demonstrating how good McDonald's are for you - it seems that they're not eating hamburgers but rather the packaged salads and stuff. Which means that people who eat salads don't consume a whole lot of meat based cholesterol and fats.
