No thread is complete without the blog/podwhoring of either NTodd, Attaturk or watertiger...
But as I've learned: whoring serious shit doesn't get you as much traffic as whoring funny shit. I need a new schtick.

Got another installment of
"IT'S 1965 ALL OVER AGAIN"
1) There's baseball in D.C.
2) Ford Mustang is cool again.
3) Garage Rock is back. (White Stripes, Jet, etc.)
4) The Rolling Stones are on tour.
5) There's a Senator named Dodd from Conn.
6) Instead of "Charlie" there's "Hajii".
7) And there's a Texas pol in the White HOuse who was never originally elected, with 2 daughters, waging an illegal and immoral war against a third world nation that was never a threat to the United States.
Please feel free to contribute...

Hey, tena. We may have to evacuate and we're thinking of heading to either Austin (if the authorities even let us take I-10) or Dallas (I-55 to I-20), and then going to Camp Casey. Any hotel recommendations for the Dallas area?

I hope you can get to Camp Casey. Dunno if I'll be able to follow through, but I'm thinking of heading to DC--from Binghamtom, NY, where I'm planning to cover the St Pat's Four federal conspiracy trial--when she moves up there when Bush's vacation finally ends.

Christopher Hitchens you drunken sot.
Mr. Hitchens, who writes for Slate and The Atlantic Monthly, clarified what world he’s currently living in. “It’s a matter of solidarity with the Iraqi and Kurdish opposition to Saddam, and trying to turn American policy in their favor,” said Mr. Hitchens. “I’m on their side, win or lose …. I could never publish an article saying, ‘Come to think of it, we never should have done this,’ because I could never look them in the face …. So, no, I don’t have any second thoughts.”

Hitchens is one example of how it is NOT 1965 again.
His position can be deconstructed on so many levels.
He defended Vietnamese nationalism while attacking US imperialism.
Now he sees US intervention as somehow defending the human rights of Kurds, etc.
THis is ridiculous given the US support of monsters like the rulers of Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia and the fascists reigning murder throughout Haiti. Hitchens doesn't seem to want to invade those nations to defend human rights. So his position has no credibility in that regard.
Elias |
08.27.05 - 2:51 pm | #
Hitchens defended the Viet Minh and NLF and Ho Chi Minh, as he and every other opponent of US imperialism should have...but don't forget the horrendous human rights violations of the Vietnamese Communists/nationalists.
Husseins atrocities are comparable, but HItchens doesn't seem to see any Iraqi nationalism. 40 years of drinking can cloud ones judgement.

Also, what would Hitchens have said if the Vietnamese or their sympathizers had detonated a series of massive explosions in Los Angeles and San Fransisco in 1966 that slaughtered a few thousand US citizens? Would he have called them "terrorists" or simply justify them as the direct result of US aggression?
It's not rocket science to destroy Hitchen's position.
The irony of an individual who wrote "Why Orwell Matters" is pretty self evident...

Given what we did to the Vietnamese, millions slaughtered, the landscape turned into a wasteland, it's a real testament to them that they didn't conduct some sort of retaliatory operation on US soil...
...It's truly amazing to ponder that.
We're just shocked that people from another part of the world have the nerve to do such things.

Atrios -- you will love this guy.

You know, I don't care for Mel Gibson, BUT he IS consistent about war.
When he made "When They Were Soldiers", he said "You have to look at it from the point of view of the Vietnamese. How would Americans feel if an invading army came into their country?"
He is not a fan of this war, either!
I remember when he said he enjoyed "Fahrenheit 911" and respects Michael Moore. I thought the freepers were all going to have coronaries.
