HULK SMASH!!!

GravatarFrist!

GravatarOk I missed this time

GravatarWhat a smarmy, self absorbed, nitwit he is.

GravatarShit, I really wanted to be first 4xs in one day.

Oh well.

GravatarIs posting first related to IQ and/or race?

Just asking.

Gravatar"Raffish roots"

I think Truly Nolen can take care of things like that. Disinfectants help.

Gravatar

GravatarRead www.billmon.org, today's posts and all of the last week. Don't miss Bring Me the Head of Hugo Chavez.

The guy is truly inspired.

GravatarThat didn't last long.

GravatarRather wasn't wrong.

The deserting coward is a war criminal, and the tolerance of fascists shitbirds like this twit for deserters has been noted.

GravatarIs posting first related to IQ and/or race?

Proximity to A.'s place. Something to do with the finite speed of light I guess.

GravatarOkay AO - I'll acknowledge that getting 8 was a coup, especialy with the 20 second rule. Hey is that the only rule on this blog?

GravatarRather was set up. He should've seen it coming.

GravatarAfternoon, Batses - how is everyone?

Gravatarql, at the rate Atrios is posting, your next opportunity will probably be in about 5 minutes. Or whenever mer shows up.

GravatarAgent Orange-

There is excellent research showing that posters have a preset number of first postings in their life. Then they die.

GravatarHey Tena, I'm just about ready to sign off, but long time no see.

GravatarTena! I was just going to email you. How the heck are you?

GravatarAgreed. Billmon has been particularly keen of late. A fine mind on that gent.

Did El Gordito leave the building yet?

Heavens to Betsy, what a handful he is. He and Woody were going at it pretty good back there.

Loved the allusion downthread of trolls to "dog poop" practical jokes that some one made. Inspired stuff.

GravatarDammit, Atrios!

Talk about your bell curve.

Goddess I hope there is no trouble in Crawford today.

GravatarTena! Missed you!

GravatarQL - Yeah, I haven't been around for a week. Mr. Tena was supposed to come up next week, but had to change it to this last week because of business.

I took him to the airport in Gunnison this morning.

GravatarRather didn't apologize? So that apology I saw him make didn't really happen?

Uh, yeah, long live the liars, I guess...

Come to think of it, I wasn't feeling well. I thought it was the Kryptonite someone brought into the room!

GravatarMissed all of you very very much.

I'm fine - I'm sad because Mr.Tena is gone and my neighbors are leaving next Thursday - I hate the end of the summer. The canoe has been put away for the winter and it is getting very quiet around here.

I'll be all on my own out here starting at the end of next week. I wish things hadn't gotten screwed up and I could go to EschaCon, damn it.

GravatarIF you follow the link to Pajamas Media, you get to read the thoughtless and self-serving bloviations of one of the guys involved.

Absolutely hilarious.

Hmmm. Gonna be harder to get a thread going.

GravatarBuckeye, Dealer of Rare Coins, well, for a while there, I had a feeling that everytime I made a comment, a new thread would appear.

GravatarWho is Pajamas Media?

And why aren't we talking about the Bell Curve?

I was wondering where you were. Missed you fine, incisive comments.

I can't make it to Eschacon either. Damn.

GravatarSo I'm watching the end of "Fat City" on IFC... Stacy Keach fighting in the Stockton Civic Auditorium... same place I saw my first rock concert - Don McLean (pre-"American Pie") opening for Blood, Sweat and Tears!

Keep up the good fight moonbats.

GravatarCheetos Media would be too obvious.

Gravatar"And that name we are in the process of deciding."

They are "deciding a name"?

What language is that?

Gravatariago,

Yeah, just what I noticed too. And PBS is 'lying to him'.

Why is it the righty bloggers seem so much more self-absorbed than the leftys? I mean, there's a whole psychology PhD in explaining Tacitus.

I have issues with some of the left-wing bloggers, but jesus for the most part they do their bit and have no, or grudging interest in the limelight, even after they've been on national media. Yet righties I've never heard of do this bizzare navel gazing. Weird.

GravatarThere is excellent research showing that posters have a preset number of first postings in their life. Then they die.

GravatarWho would ever name a blog "Pajamas Media" in the first place?

People who sleepwalk through life?

GravatarShaw - Thank you, that's so sweet; your comments are brilliant, so that's quite a compliment.

We can keep each other company over the EschaCon weekend.

dave - I can't now - there are a severely limited number of flights out of here and they are booked solid for Labor Day weekend. Wish I could, but even if I could get on a plane, it would cost me to do it at the last minute. I can't do that. I can't afford it.

GravatarPeople just keep piling in. It is very hot.

You know, I bless them for their intestinal fortitude.

It is hot as FUCK in texas this week- and will be next week too.

There isn't anything that could make me camp out there for weeks on end.

GravatarI love it when they brag about Rather resigning because of them.

Here's a question, when do the anchors of Fox news start resigning from their well documented , numerous errors?

NOt just oreilly, etc, but the so called 'real' anchors like hume etc???

Gravatar "francis the mute"

Oh my yes, bought it the day it came out.

I just saw TMV back in May, great show.

That would be the language of "asshattery." Or maybe "pomposity."

Gravatarwhen i saw thn TDS clip of that coward proclaiming himself a proud national guardsman who became president it made me wretch- to think of those lifeless black bags being unloaded at Andover in the dark of night so that son of a !@!^% can pretend all is well, while his co-defendant minions dutifully march out and spray so much shit into the air that they hope most will sicken and disconnect- fuck them. well back to my little local cable channel to plead for some truth.sorry to rant.

GravatarI'll be here posting as well, lamenting my inability to be at Eschacon.

GravatarRather wasn't wrong.

The deserting coward is a war criminal, and the tolerance of fascists shitbirds like this twit for deserters has been noted.
Gary Frazier

Exactly. The reality is that Bush disobeyed orders to take a mandatory flight physical most likely because he was too damn drunk and coked up to pass a piss test, which lead to him being grounded after millions of taxpayer dollars and countless staff time hours were invested in his pilot training (which Karen Hughes lied about). He also disobeyed orders to remain in Houston and went missing for the better part of a year when he went to Alabama (against orders) and failed to report for drills.

The veracity of the source of the memos does not change these facts.

GravatarOT, but h-e-e-e-e-e-errre's Blackie!

GravatarCindy Sheehan is now wiping her ass.

Yeah - with Bill O'Reilly. Heh!

Not only is the factual content absolutely true, but the documents authenticity has never be disproved.
The Thornburgh Commission refused to address that issue!

GravatarAh, the desperate trolls.

Their treatment of Cindy just put me in mind of that great editorial cartoon about Mandela from years ago, Toles it might've been.

Shows a guard leading him into a prison cell, then, 2nd panel, 25 years later, the guard's just let him out.

There's the little guard, walking away from the cell, and behind him, having emerged, are a pair of giant black feet leading up out of the picture.

Guard's saying, 'Well, I hope you learned your lesson, Mandela.'

GravatarRepost. Didn't know the last thread was done.

Christopher Hitchens you drunken sot.

Mr. Hitchens, who writes for Slate and The Atlantic Monthly, clarified what world he’s currently living in. “It’s a matter of solidarity with the Iraqi and Kurdish opposition to Saddam, and trying to turn American policy in their favor,” said Mr. Hitchens. “I’m on their side, win or lose …. I could never publish an article saying, ‘Come to think of it, we never should have done this,’ because I could never look them in the face …. So, no, I don’t have any second thoughts.”

More here.

GravatarOT: Iraq Sunnis counter charter proposal

A Sunni Arab negotiator has said that Sunnis submitted counterproposals on Iraq's constitution and would meet with the US ambassador, who has urged the country's factions to produce a charter acceptable to all.

Earlier, Parliament Speaker Hajim al-Hassani, a Sunni, said Shia and Kurds had made amendments to address Sunni concerns about federalism and purging former ruling party members.

But Sunni negotiator Fakhri al-Qaisi said his side saw no "essential changes" in that offer.

GravatarBritain heads for clash with US

Britain will join an international alliance to confront George Bush and salvage as much as possible of an ambitious plan to reshape the United Nations and tackle world poverty next week .

The head-to-head in New York on Monday comes after the revelation that the US administration is proposing wholesale changes to crucial parts of the biggest overhaul of the UN since it was founded more than 50 years ago.

A draft of that plan had included a review of progress on the UN's millennium development goals - poverty eradication targets set in 2000 for completion by 2015 - and the introduction of reforms aimed at repairing the damage done to the UN's reputation by Iraq, Rwanda and the Balkans.

The crucial part of the report:
"It is sometimes suggested that the Black/White differential in psychometric intelligence is partly due to genetic differences (Jensen, 1972). There is not much direct evidence on this point, but what little there is fails to support the genetic hypothesis...."

Also, heritability refers to population variance, not to some genetic pecentage of intelligence in an individual.

Gravatardave - well, SF is about as far from here as Philadelphia is.

Next year, I'd love it if we could meet in the middle.

I'm going to Italy in the spring and I have to make a deposit on the trip. And I have a $2000 HOA special assessment coming up - like in September.

I'm broke.

Phoenix - summer rates at the Biltmore mean more luxe for the buxe! Everybody else can sleep in the backyard and the pool, under the stars. Make a run to Katz's Delicatessen for reubens and late night trawls to after hours jazz clubs.

GravatarPerfect summer temps range between 90 and 95 F (but I don't have humidity).

Tena--have you contacted WGG? i believe he's taking riders.

Somehow paying people shit wages and treating them like idiots just kinda doesn't motivate them properly to pay careful attention to safe food handling procedures...

GravatarHappy b-day, Olexicon!

GravatarThe trolls are also discussing psychological research which is not only picked for reference in a biased manner (excluding research that contradicts it) but which is also outdated. As I understand it nature and nurture are no longer regarded as two alternative explanations (if they ever where) but seem to be related in a much more complicated manner. Whether some genes being switched on or off by environmental effects is relevant for the intelligence debates or not is unclear to me but I'd be a lot more careful about making assertions based on something that is founded on a few, carefully biased sources from the seventies.

Gravatari think fat city was gardners only novel. its a great book, but pretty dark.

That's one of the most interesting things about Gardner. One time out with something brilliant and then he pretty much disappeared. I'll have to read more about him.

GravatarAuntie GWPDA--I'm good with Phoenix for next year, but only if we get to hang with Arthur.

GravatarSallyH - Yes, I know WGG is taking riders.

Consider this: it is a cross-country trip. Mr.Tena has never so much as talked to WGG - how could I possibly reconcile traveling all the way across the country with another man who is a complete stranger to my husband?

I can't ask him if that's ok - I wouldn't be happy if the shoe was on the other foot - ya know?

GravatarYou can refute the Bell

It's the acceptance of this measure that will always be the bridge to eugenics. Psychological societies must quit defending this piece of pseudoscience and quit opening the door to racial science.

GravatarGWPDA, yclept Irate Scholar -

GravatarRepublicans are buying up mass quantities of 'Support the Troops' magnets and giving them away for free.

Gravatar Forget the Bell Curve. Are you or have you ever been a defender of the notion of an 'Intelligence Quotient.'

For what purpose? Binet developed the IQ to create a measure which could be used to determine the children that most benefited from special schooling.

It was hijacked for completely different purposes later, and to this day it is often used for purely political purposes.

Conside that the IQ is based on a bunch of questions intended to predict school performance, is taken at one single point in a person's life, doesn't test for memory, creativity or social intelligence (or probably for many other types of intelligence), seems to be amenable to training (which an innate measure shouldn't be), is affected by the test-taker's self-esteem and other emotions, and has on the whole increased in the U.S. over the last fifty years.

Whatever it measures is an interesting question, but it is in no way something that we can equate with the nebulous and qualitative concept we think of as intelligence.

GravatarTheir validity and reliability are quite questionable. Check out the Flynn Effect for example. IQs have been rising worldwide for decades. ETS and other testing companies have had to constantly recalibrate their tests to account for this. in other words, a person with a very high IQ in 1950 would test as average or below average now. That's a little troubling for something that is supposed to have a large genetic component.

GravatarNTodd--think of the spokesmodels.

GravatarIraq Sunnis make new offer demanding Islam, rejecting federalism

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraq's disenchanted Sunni Arabs sprung a surprise by demanding a bigger role for Islam and rejecting Shiite autonomy as they submitted a new proposal on the draft constitution, a day before it comes to a parliamentary vote.

"We have presented a (new) proposal countering the Shiites' and Kurds' proposal... We reject the term 'autonomous regions' wherever it is mentioned," in the draft, Sunni negotiator Saleh al-Motlag told AFP, referring to federalism.

"Islam is the religion of the state and the main source of legislation," the new proposal stipulated, Motlag said.

There we have Richardson's New Mexican, Richardson's Bar, AJ's Barbecue, Phoenix City Grille, Mediterranean House, two steakhouses, Feeney's (half a block away), the pastry shoppe and a couple of others I can't remember. Justice for Dilawar

Punishments were handed down for four American soldiers involved in the brutal murder of an Afghan taxi driver at Bagram prison:

One soldier has been sentenced to two months in prison, another to three months. A third was demoted and given a letter of reprimand and a fine. A fourth was given a reduction in rank and pay.

A reminder of what happened to Dilawar:

Mr. Dilawar was a frail man, standing only 5 feet 9 inches and weighing 122 pounds. But at Bagram, he was quickly labeled one of the "noncompliant" ones.

When one of the First Platoon M.P.'s, Specialist Corey E. Jones, was
sent to Mr. Dilawar's cell to give him some water, he said the prisoner
spit in his face and started kicking him. Specialist Jones responded,
he said, with a couple of knee strikes to the leg of the shackled man.

"He screamed out, 'Allah! Allah! Allah!' and my first reaction was
that he was crying out to his god," Specialist Jones said to
investigators. "Everybody heard him cry out and thought it was funny."

Other Third Platoon M.P.'s later came by the detention center and
stopped at the isolation cells to see for themselves, Specialist Jones
said.

"It became a kind of running joke, and people kept showing up to give
this detainee a common peroneal strike just to hear him scream out
'Allah,' " he said. "It went on over a 24-hour period, and I would
think that it was over 100 strikes."

A three month sentence.

The soldiers apparently weren't the only ones who thought the way they treated a helpless and innocent man was a joke.

Like Curtis Mayfield said "if there's a hell below, we're all gonna go".

GravatarOff to clean the bathrooms and foodshop.

GravatarKevin Drum cites an authoritative report from the American Psychological Association that shows genetic differences in intelligence are real and significant.
ky | 08.27.05 - 2:49 pm |

what drum says (quoting the apa) [my keyboard is dying, limited caps available]

On race: "It is sometimes suggested that the Black/White differential in psychometric intelligence is partly due to genetic differences (Jensen, 1972). There is not much direct evidence on this point, but what little there is fails to support the genetic hypothesis...."

Then down in the comments we get one from al who has trolled drum for as long as i have read him:

Further, it was whites who wrote the Constitution, discovered the law of gravity, invented the cotton gin, blood transfusions, etc., etc., etc.

poor troll, obviously has never heard of Charles drew "Charles Drew researched blood plasma and transfusions in New York City. It was during his work at Columbia University where he made his discoveries relating to the preservation of blood. By separating the liquid red blood cells from the near solid plasma and freezing the two separately, he found that blood could be preserved and reconstituted at a later date.

Charles Drew's system for the storing of blood plasma (blood bank) revolutionized the medical profession."

or that Eli Whitney's claim to have invented the cotton gin is not all that clear."Lately, Eli Whitney's long-standing claim as sole inventor of the cotton gin has come under fire. Some historians credit a woman who supported Whitney at the time of the invention, or the slave community in general. The gin is also said to be a common device of the period, and Whitney is portrayed as an opportunist who took advantage of the patent system to claim ownership. Eli Whitney just got the credit, it is suggested, because of his skill in manipulating the legal system to get a patent."

any one wonder what iq tests of trolls compared to the general population would show

Gravataroh, got it. go to Herculaneum too. And Venice...I could wax on the rest of the day...my favorite spot on Earth ,not high season though... did you see the movie Sumertime? if not you must rent it with Kate Hepburn.

Gravatarsittenpretty - my neighbor has been to Italy a number of times and Venice is her favorite place, too. I'm just dying to see it - I can't wait. Pompeii is worth the whole trip for me, however, even without Venice.

I can't wait. She's a member of a chorale and this is a tour for them - they will be singing in different places; my time will be my own. I'm tagging along for a phenomenally good price. Air fare, lodging in 4 and 5 star hotels, breakfast, most meals, transportation on the ground - just over $3000 for 11 days. I jumped on it.

Gravatarw'll talk you have many months to contemplate..and a different world it is there .....oh hum!

GravatarI just had to close this thread by saying... Po'Jama People!

Oh, and...

You should never smoke in pajamas
You might start a fire and burn your face
Maybe you should move to Managua
You could go unnoticed in such a place

Gravatar"What if chimp decided he needed all cats to fight in his war for profit?

"Knowing cats, I wouldn't be too worried about that."

Indeed, not even the Pajamas Medianiks had the chutzpa to call themselves the Cat's Pajamas; they shrank before feline cool.
