Got the NYT today. The editorial on wage remuneration for Federal clean up efforts in NO set my blood boiling.
Bacon-Davis law stipulates that Federal contracts be based on prevailing wage structures in the given locality. I just bought a 2005 330Ci convertible a couple of months ago and got an unbelievable deal on it. The Austin dealership wasn't doing deals at the time (since they're the only BMW dealer here in town), so I drove up to DFW. Multiple dealers fighting for a diminishing number of buyers.
The other thing I did is figure out how the dealers code their stock. The place I bought from puts incremental stock numbers on their cars, lower the number the longer the cars been sitting on the lot.
Then I saw what stock numbers were getting the advertised deals or internet deals... the car I wanted was *almost* but not quite as old as the ones they were getting aggressive on, so I felt pretty confident about pushing them even harder for a deal.
When my daughter was little, my feminism radar went off as strongly about these ponies as Barbie-- a combination of that "girls loving horseback riding meme" with the come hither lordosis of these little plastic critters.
But you go ahead and enjoy them, Holden, and don't read anything I say as jealousy or whatever.

We're on the deepest part of the Guadalupe here in NB- we don't have the dopey drunk slothful tubers (a whole other set of problems) just the gnatlike, oil leaking, jetskis and skiboats roaring up and down like a freaking speedway. Anyone trying to swim or fish or kayak along this stretch is just shit out of luck. Of course, swimming isn't something I'd consider anyway-- too many snakes and too much poison ivy.

On Recreational vehicles:
We have 26 hilly, wooded acres of land outside of Tulsa OK. There is a rough, rocky utility access road running down one side of the property that the 4x4s, dirt bikes etc like to use. We put a locked gate at each end of the property to block it off and gave a key to the rural water people. Now these weren't fascist, rich boy land owner gates, you could easily get around them if you were on foot or mountain biking.
The first year we had the gates up a 4x4, probably with a big bumper/push bar on the front drove through one of the gates. Tore shit up turning around and drove back out.
So when we put a new gate up my buddy welded a special heavy duty road warrior gate big rebar spikes on it so if they tried to push down again it would hopefully puncture their radiator. Well that lasted 2 years and some ass munch hooked his winch up to it and tried to pull it off. We made it super heavy duty, chained it/ cabled it to cut off telephone poles dug in deep and concreted. So it held, but it fucked it up good.
If ever catch a 4x4 on my land I'll shoot his tires out and torch the truck. This *is* Oklahoma, so that kind of hillbilly bullshit should be acceptable, right?

Re Truman's bad numbers--remember that 50-60 years ago polling was much more inexact, and seriously oversampled Republicans. That's one of the explanations for Truman's supposed "upset" victory in '48. The pollsters hadn't talked to enough Democrats. I think it also means his record low approval ratings in '52 should be taken with a large grain of salt. You should probably add about three to five percent. If Dubya gets down to about 32, he's in Truman territory.
Holden is a long time commentor and racanteur who coined a phrase "40 by the 4th" to predict Bush's sinking poll numbers in the election year.
