Gravatar Is there a bigger prick than Sean Hannity?

Is this a trick question?

GravatarSo I just watched the second showing of BSG with the podcast commentary.

Someon on the previous thread opined that Galactica was the Dems and the Pegasus was the Republican'ts. He or she was closer to the truth than we thought as it turns out!

In the podcast Ronald Moore actually mentions John Bolton of all people as a partial inspiration for certain characteristics of Admiral Caine's character.

Obviously in that situation he wasn't trying to make an overt political point, but from the context it was clear that he did not consider Bolton as a positive role model.

Too fracking funny.

Nobody really liked him and very few people in Washington wanted to be seen in the same picture frame unless it was tossed into a lit fireplace or raging bonfire. There was something disturbing about him, the quiet voices said - a sense of a deadly organic being that was morphing upon itself, like a corpse bloating in the New Orleans sun. It was inconceivable that a petty thief and unhinged frat boy could be leader of the free world and speeding around the bayou at night, squealing like a demented pig about alternative rock and the kings of the East joining the forces of the North and turning against world civilization, burning it to the ground."

Their rigid belief structure provides an externally imposed order; an order that they lack internally. This is similar to patterns seen in autistics.

So is Zell Miller.

GravatarDrum and Marshall both have links to all the various timelines, I think.

GravatarSorry to the fine Texans who post here, but here's chapter kazillion why Texans might be unpopular.

I've mentioned beore that I live in Atlanta and listen to WREK, a great free-form college radio station from GA Tech.

Well, I just called in about a song I'd heard, not quickly posted on their "Just played" website. When the DJ couldn't answer the simple question, I said OK, but you have a nice accent I can't place. It doesn't sound like anything I've heard from Georgia.

It's not from Georgia, says he, it's from Lubbock TX, and I get laid all the time with it. Girls just love the way I talk.... etc.

I don't doubt him, but I cut the conversation short. The Lubbock baritone drawl is indeed charming, ladies, and well-suited for any radio format, but the man behind it might be self-infatuated.

GravatarGary's a registered fucksnot.

That is all.

GravatarFred Phelps is a registered Democrat

So bloody motherfucking what?

Gravatarfred phelps is a registered democrat. like that means shit. somebody told me michael novak is a registered democrat. and quisling was a registered norwegian.

GravatarAnyone can register whatever affiliation they want. If I registered as a Republican it wouldn't make me representative of the GOP.

Phelps was kicked out of his local Dem party because he is a far-right religous nutcase, and EVERYONE knows which party is the natural home for far-right religous nut cases.

Gravatartimeline:

GravatarSorry to the fine Texans who post here, but here's chapter kazillion why Texans might be unpopular.

Um, Texans are unpopular because of a jackass from Lubbock who lives in Georgia?

Somehow, I doubt it.

GravatarThat's precisely why there must be a litmus test before we just shoot a person for being a registered Republican.

GravatarPhelps was a registered Republican but switched his registration to embarass the Democratic party because of their overarching, tepid support for gay rights.

You'll notice he doesn't protest the war, he claims that God kills our troops because America hasn't killed all the gay people.

Evidently, the 'radical Islamo-fascists' are A-OK in Fred Phelps' book. Funny how that slipped past Hannity.

You have to wonder how long his exponentially inbred family will survive. Must be some special Xmas memories there.

Gravatarrorschach--I'm not sure what you're aiming at, but I don't want to aggravate Texans, except when one or two of them lives up to stereotypes.

I'm from NY, even though I've spent most of my life in FL; I'm still a NYer. When I see NYers from my native Long Island, be they Bill O'Reilly or Billy Joel, acting badly, I tend to think they tar the rest of us, from a distance in FL or Atlanta.

So I'm not out to smear Texans, but sometimes they act according to bad form. The Lubbock guy is on the radio right now, complete with bedroom baritone drawl. Yuck

Gravatarbkny - thanks, that's it!

"Sorry to the fine Texans who post here, but here's chapter kazillion why Texans might be unpopular."

We're unpopular because some Connecticut scion spend a few years with some Texas boys learning their accent and half their manners (the bad half).

And we ski in Colorado but don't take any lip from the locals there.

GravatarMay I nominate the Kings "This Beat Goes On - Switching to Glide" as the worst song ever.

Look I have proof.

This Beat Goes On*

Hey Judy, get Trudy
You said to call you up if I was feeling moody
Hey little Donna, still wanna
You said to ring you up if I was in Toronto
I have lots of friends that I can ding at any time
Can mobilize some laughs with just one call
Like a bunch of lunatics we'll act till way past dawn
Sure we'll be rockin' till our strength is gone
Yeah This Beat Goes On
Hey ladies you crazies
Me and Zero request you in the Mercedes
And then we'll ride so zoomy inside
The sky's the limit this time I'm Switchin' to Glide
I don't give a hoot about what people have to say
I'm laughin' as I'm analyzed
Lunatics Anonymous that's where I belong
Sure cause I am one till my strength is gone
Yeah This Beat Goes On
I have lots of friends that I can ding at any time
Can mobilize some laughs with just one call
Like a bunch of lunatics we'll act till way past dawn
Sure we'll be rockin' till our strength is gone
Yeah This Beat Goes On

Switchin' To Glide*

Nothing matters but the weekend
From a Tuesday point of view
Like a kettle in the kitchen
I feel the steam begin to brew
Switchin' to Glide
Energy can be directed
I'm turning it up I'm turning it down
Even love can be affected
Harmony's the sweetest sound
Switching to Glide..Balancing in my head..inside of me...
taking the glide path instead.
Everybody gets the no-no
Hear it ringing in they ears
Lots of ways that you can go GO!
Look around NO disappears

I had friends come to my wedding in Austin from Derbyshire, England, and they went camping in Big Bend, and wound up finding the backpack of a hiker who'd gone missing last year...

GravatarAnderson Cooper taking a beating from Rita on CNN right now. Why are they outside?

GravatarLet me clarify, since it's late. I identify regionally with Long Island, even though I haven't lived there since a teen.

When I hear Long Island white-flight suburbanites talk about race and property values and highway pork to further pave over the formerly beautiful farmland, it makes me sick.

I know what the potato and melon farms were like before they were the test-case for national sprawl. The deer and racoons would make your lawn their homes, peacefully, not stealing pet food. No more--they're nuisances.

So it'd seem.

It was rather funny when they related it to us upon return. They went back to the ranger station at the day's end and told them where they'd been and so forth, and the rangers were bored and dismissive.

Then they mentioned the backpack, and the rangers perked right on up. And my friends had to take them out to the spot the next day.

GravatarRipley, The song brings back college memories of drunk sorority girls. I don't begrudge the song for that I just always thought that the song was so lame and with wo many other good songs to rock out to why that one? Why?

GravatarAs an American living here in Norway, all I've got (usually it is enough) for news on the storm is CNN international, and the net.

CNN is sticking to the usual "got two guys in orange rainsuits that know nothing more than what is happening directly in their vicinity reporting while wind blows into their mics", a weatherman with a clicker and pointer, and some talking heads.

Oh..just now, weather-woman #3 showed up to tell us it is raining where she is too...

WHAT is it with these morons? She wants to show me "what the wind has done here" and she, like her predecesser in another town somewhere, is showing us FLAGS for gods sake "you see old glory here, it is not in tatters"...swear to god, this is the 2nd flag pointing from some idiot.

Maybe they are leading up to how "the wind hates America, see how it attacks our wonderful flag"

Expect a proposal to law in congress anytime now with outlawing the wind from attacking our flag, with a rider for people also.

God dammit..I want to know what the hell is going on with all those folks on the highways. Not ONE mention of them. Is there still traffic jams all the way?

Are they sitting ducks, or is something being done to get them to lee?

Gravatar Remember The Hooters and The Outfield?

GravatarCourt rules no right to tell TSA screeners they live in a bubble

You can wear a jacket with "Fuck The Draft" on the back into a court of law, but, according to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, don't even think about swearing loudly at any TSA officials who make you miss your plane.

Today, the Court ruled that TSA can arrest and fine you for swearing loudly and belligerently while you're being searched at the airport security check because it "interferes" with the TSA's job. The court rejected any First Amendment right to free speech, claiming that while asking a "good-faith question" with profanity in it or even "grumbling" with profanity would not be enough for a fine, the conduct here somehow constituted more.

Specifically, the court ruled:

Petitioner’s conduct in this case, however, cannot be characterized as simply asking a good-faith question while using profanities or as grumbling about not being allowed to walk back through the metal detector or the delay in being hand-wanded.

Rather, Petitioner interfered with the screener in the performance of his duties by actively engaging the screener with loud and belligerent conduct, and, after being asked not to use profanities, by exclaiming that the screener should be in a different line of work, that he should live in a bubble, and that it was a free country in which he could say what he pleased.

Due to the escalating loud and belligerent nature of Petitioner’s conduct directed at the screener, the screener needed to shut down his line and call over his supervisor. Thus, Petitioner’s conduct interfered with the screener’s duty to both thoroughly screen passengers and to do so in an efficient manner.

GravatarI don't really understand why the networks don't understand this.

Instead of a bunch of news hack who're totally burnt out on reporting, they could hire locals on a contingency, with the understanding that they got paid some amount per minute of broadcast used.

This would be good for all. The locals that decided to stay in any local event would have something to do during the event, but fret. The viewers or listeners would get some authentic reports.

Gravatar"SPINNING THE PROTESTS" REDUX
Glenn Reynolds proposed that readers Google the names mentioned in this WaPo article on the upcoming anti-war rallies in D.C., entitled "Antiwar Rally Will Be First for Many: Focused Message Draws Protestors of All Stripes." That sounded like fun, so I obliged by starting with the first name in the article, "Patrice Cuddy."

To hear the WaPo tell it, Patrice is a mild-mannered, middle-aged former schoolteacher from Olathe, Kansas, and will be a "novice protestor" in the upcoming rallies. The Post article seems to suggest that Cuddy represents a growing contingent of small town, mainstream, Red State Americans who're beginning to join in anti-war protests:

[T]hey will be joined by novice protesters such as Patrice Cuddy, 56. Interviewed by phone yesterday, the former public school teacher in Olathe, Kan., said she had to pull off her gardening gloves each time a neighbor interrupted her yardwork to ask about joining the bus she had chartered to go to the nation's capital. [Look! Even mild-mannered retirees from flyover country -- and their neighbors -- will be joining the protest!]

"It's small and it's quiet here in Johnson County, but more and more people are becoming part of the group that doesn't agree with this war," said Cuddy, who was planning to load about 45 people onto the bus in a Home Depot parking lot this morning for the 20-hour ride to Washington.

Organizers say that similar busloads of teachers, nurses, housewives and others with little experience in mass protest are coming from Wisconsin, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa, Georgia, Ohio and many other states. [Look! More protestors from flyover country!]

"This demonstration will reflect, by far, the most diverse group of antiwar protesters since before the war began," said Brian Becker, national coordinator for the ANSWER Coalition, one of the event's sponsors. "We have people coming from all political persuasions, including a very large number of people who have never before been part of the antiwar movement or protest activity." [See, protests aren't just for International ANSWER and coastal urbanites anymore!]

But it turns out that Patrice Cuddy is also known as "J. Patrice Cuddy-Lamoree (see here and here), and has been helping organize antiwar protests from the beginning. Here's the Internet Archive of a website that Patrice edits, Wyeyed ("Wide-Eyed"), containing many photos from the February 15, 2003 anti-war rally of United for Peace and Justice, in New York City. No word on whether Patrice herself took those photos, but she says openly, on her blog at Greater Kansas City Democracy for America: "I have been in the streets since the beginning of this war . . . " And she advises her readers at Kansas City IndyMedia (where she has been posting since at least February of '03) : "If you ever get an opportunity to go to one of these big rallies, DO IT! A Total rave thing without the drugs and alcohol." She once tried to march in a

GravatarBasra warrant for two UK soldiers

A judge in the southern Iraqi city of Basra has issued an arrest warrant for two British soldiers.

They are wanted over the death of an Iraqi civilian and the injury of an Iraqi police officer in a confrontation on Monday, the judge said.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said a warrant would have no legal basis.

On Monday, UK troops freed the soldiers - widely believed to be undercover SAS officers - from Iraqi custody after storming a Basra police station.

Soldiers' 'immunity'

The MoD said it was aware of reports about the arrest warrant but that it could not confirm it had actually been issued.

British forces spokesman Major Steve Melbourne said the two men had immunity from prosecution under an arrangement between the Iraqi government and coalition forces.

"They have no legal basis for the issue of these warrants," he told BBC News.

Last Show No Sell-out on the Magical Misery Tour »
September 21, 2005
The Million Yawn March
The AP, Washington Post, and other news sources gleefully mentioned Cindy Sheehan's march on the White House this afternoon. With the exception of Reuters, however, they were all more than willing to forego this little tidbit of information:

Mrs Sheehan was joined by about 30 supporters in her march down Pennsylvania Avenue to deliver a letter to Bush urging him to pull the troops out of Iraq.

Source: Reuters via Yahoo!

That's all, folks. I count 29 people. This is her entire protest party. Including Cindy.

After a carefully stage-managed vigil by liberal PR firm Fenton Communications, and a pair of 3-week long national bus tours to drum up support for her cause, "Mother Sheehan" managed to bring with her just this tiny gaggle with her to the gates of the White House.

The organizers backing her show hope to draw "ten of thousands" of fellow protestors this weekend, but if this sad crowd and last night's turnout of just 150 in New York are any indication, the fledging anti-war movement of Cindy Sheehan is all but dead.

GravatarIt's gonna squat on East Texas.

GravatarYou know BD - You have just about convinced me to make a trek out and visit Wheatland. It looks like a really good time.

Gravatarql in ny....Very Slow.
It will move up threw Texas and then stop. Then it will rain for 3-5 days on Texas and LA...24.5 inches of rain.
There will be cities inland that will flood and probably have to evacuate. One mayor of a town up North was talking about their evac plans

Gravatarbarndog you hippie! Cool stage

GravatarA huge number of old hippies (like myself), lots of musicians (like myself) great food everywhere, and lots of community love abounding.

Thats what keeps me coming back.

GravatarAnd another thing. I decided, over two years ago, that from now on I would only donate money to alternative media. Bartcop gets turkee from me every year. I know there are problems with his page, and some here don't think he is a deep enough thinker, but I hear things there that I never hear anywhere else.

GravatarChad said a high pressure will stop the hurricane over Texas and then even possibly it will turning back over Houston and N.O. to exit out to Gulf.
Weird

GravatarComments on the hippie wear:

What the stylish hippie for 2005 wears. The tie skirt was made for me by the woman who runs Middleground (the group for Teens at Wheatland). It is composed of 50's and 60's recycled neckties, which were split and sewn together, backed at the hemline, and drawn together at the top by a pullstring. I have the way-cool potleaf suspenders to assist. (they were a gift by one of the future board members at Wheatland).

T-shirt by Tim & Ryh at Tee's Dyes, bandana from my wife, button from the British Columbia Marijuana Party, Rainbow tie from StillNursing.

GravatarThe storm is just beginning to begin here. I'm going to go outside with some beers and see what happens.
