For the people, I am old enough to remember.
Though your brother's bound and gagged
And they've chained him to a chair
Won't you please come to Chicago
Just to sing
In a land that's known as freedom
How can such a thing be fair
Won't you plaese come to Chicago
For the help we can bring
We can change the world -
Re-arrange the world
It's dying - to get better
Politicians sit yourself down,
There's nothing for you here
Won't you please come to Chicago
For a ride
Don't ask Jack to help you
Cause he'll turn the other ear
Won't you please come to Chicago
Or else join the other side
We can change the world -
Re-arrange the world
It's dying - if you believe in justice
It's dying - and if you believe in freedom
It's dying - let a man live it's own life
It's dying - rules and regulations, who needs them
Open up the door
Somehow people must be free
I hope the day comes soon
Won't you please come to Chicago
Show your face
From the bottom to the ocean
To the mountains of the moon
Won't you please come to Chicago
No one else can take your place
We can change the world -
Re-arrange the world
It's dying - if you believe in justice
It's dying - and if you believe in freedom
It's dying - let a man live it's own life
It's dying - rules and regulations, who needs them
Open up the door

I am so psyched about going to the peace rally, festival, and peace concert today!
At the January 2003 rally, I realized I had never been more proud of the Bill of Rights, of beign American.
Joan Baez will be there. Martin Sheen will be there. A bunch of people we've never heard of that work damn hard to help our politics evolve into something that uses nonviolent tactics--they'll be there. My heros.
It's going to be a blast--the concert starts at 3pm and is supposed to last to 10 pm. I wish I could stay the whole thing but can't.
I recommend going highly to Atrios readers--you'll never feel as in-tune with democracy as when at a rally on the mall. And when it's a peace rally, you'll never feel more in tune with being a citizen of the planet.
Listening to Carnival (new NMA CD) bioth helps and hurts. But I can't stop. Seriously, no joke. On my walkman now

Texas can use lesson in evacuating a city
Louisiana plan called more efficient, orderly
Many chose hurricane over facing the traffic
By Bob Marshall
Staff writer
It certainly goes against the current trend among the nation's punditry, but Larry and Monica Ponoroff would like to suggest Mayor Ray Nagin and Gov. Kathleen Blanco as models for hurricane planning. Well, at least for the evacuation stage.
The New Orleans couple came to that conclusion about halfway through a 17-hour attempt to evacuate Houston on Thursday as Hurricane Rita headed for the Texas coast.
After about seven hours of baking inside their rental car in 95 degree heat on Interstate 45, they were out of food and water and had watched as their once-filled gas tank hit the "half" mark. Yet they were still inside metro Houston, no more than 35 miles from their starting point, and stuck in a line of traffic that appeared to stretch the entire 250 miles to Dallas - but was moving at inches-per-hour.
So they couldn't help thinking about their evacuation from New Orleans before Katrina whacked their home: 11 comfortable, orderly hours from the Big Easy to Houston.
"I think they could have taken page from Louisiana's book on this one," Monica Ponoroff said. "They should have called Kathleen Blanco and Ray Nagin and asked them 'How do we evacuate a city?' because they sure didn't have a clue.
"Eventually we gave up. We turned around and went back to the apartment. And that took us three hours. What a mess."
The Ponoroffs' ordeal is one of millions that will be told about what could be the greatest traffic jam in American history. They never saw it coming.
Oh, and Shaw: what's that gravatar image? A sea cucumber?

It's actually a picture of an erupting volcano (I chose it for my blogsite--see Homepage).

I've been thinking about the blog whores for the past couple of days. For some reason, Linette kind of pissed me off with her insistance that we all click on to her site and then comment on her take on how the dems can win the next elections. Honestly, I don't know why she pissed me off, and other whores don't. "&" whored a comic that I clicked on that was actually a bit funny. Certainly Watertiger and Attaturk will always get me to click to their cites. RMJ, when I have energy, is always a good read, and I have even been known to pimp Athenae's book over at First Draft.
Most times, for people I don't know, I just scroll by their links.
So why did I get pissed at Linette?

Morning all. Coffee, um.
So all the media outlets up here in Canada are telling us we're stupid and moronic and such for rushing out to buy gas the last couple of days just because of "rumors" that the price was about to go up in a big way.
I say, No, we're smart consumers. We've learned that the oil companies will raise the price on any excuse, and we've pre-empted them this time. The joke's on them, and they're pissed.
On the other hand, when people are happy to be buying gas at $1.11 a liter instead of a feared higher price, we got a big problem....

The South China Morning Post reprinted a David Ignatius editorial from WaPo this morning on being loved/hated that made me realise just how far the WaPo had jumped the shark. It was like he was arguing that the US should just get over the idea of being liked and get back to kicking some serious foreign ass to ensure Murkins stay at the top of the heap.

Well, the ones on my blog are from news reports. But the ones on my camera card are indeed shots I took while driving around, mostly when I lived in Arkansas, but I think a few in Louisiana and Tennessee as well.
I hated living in Arkansas. I lived in a dry county, with absolutely no one I could remotely relate to, although I got friendly with a couple of colleagues. So, I basically spent my free time driving around the countryside. My girlfriend, now-wife, came down to visit for a while, and we took weekend trips to Memphis, New Orleans, etc., which basically kept me sane. But these trips are where I collected my pictures.

"The new allegations center around systematic abuse of Iraqi detainees by men of the 82nd Airborne at Camp Mercury, a forward operating base located near Fallujah, the scene of a major uprising against the U.S. occupation in April 2004, according to sources familiar with the report and accounts given by the Captain, who is in his mid-20s, to Senate staff. Much of the abuse allegedly occurred in 2003 and 2004, before and during the period the Army was conducting an internal investigation into the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, but prior to when the abuses at Abu Ghraib became public. Other alleged abuses described in the Human Rights report occurred at Camp Tiger, near Iraq's border with Syria, and previously in Afghanistan. In addition, the report details what the Captain says was his unsuccessful effort over 17 months to get the attention of military superiors. Ultimately he approached the Republican senators."

There's been about a dozen 7.0 or greater California earthquakes in the past deacade. The last itme that happened was in the decade before the 1906 SF quake, which was probably greater than 8.0.
And let's remember: an 8.0 is ten times as big as a 7.0.

Rorschach-- I was working as a reporter in Searcy, home of the Church of Christ-affiliated Harding University.
I'm still kinda stunned by the experience, actually. I regained my sanity by marrying my wife and moving out of that crazy country entirely, to Canada. I have all this information about my experience-- scary, scary stories -- and I started my blog as an attempt to actually start writing about it. My dad, a reformed Catholic, was absolutely adament that no priest come and pray over his body. Frankly, having grown up a Quaker, I feel the same way. We don't have priests or pastors leading the flock, and I would most definitely not want any praying over my dead body. However, I WOULD LIKE MY BODY PICKED UP INSTEAD OF LYING TO ROT IN THE STREET.
