There was a cartoon some years ago -- I don't think it was Jim Borgman, but it was someone in that style. It had seven pictures, with space for an eighth.
First was a fit looking "Richard Nixon: Before".
Second was a bent, decrepit "Richard Nixon: After".
Third was a strong, robust "Gerald Ford: Before".
Fourth was a beaten, mummified "Gerald Ford: After".
Fifth was a smiling, hopeful "Jimmy Carter: Before".
Sixth was a crumpled, wizened "Jimmy Carter: After".
Seventh was an ancient, nearly drooling "Ronald Reagan: Before".

Don't forget Frist has been having financial trouble for a while now.
Frist's first critical decision, made in June 2000, was to take $1 million of the contributed money out of the bank, where it was helping earn up to $170,000 a year in interest, and invest it in the stock market.
Frist put the money into a mutual fund managed by the Charles Schwab investment firm, his campaign said. And that fund, which Frist's aides refused to identify beyond saying it was an index fund, quickly began losing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Frist's next crucial decisions came in November 2000. Having decided that this would be his last run for the Senate and knowing that by law he could not use his Senate cash in a race for president, Frist wanted to get back $1.2 million he had lent his campaign in 1994, when he first ran for office.
But Frist 2000 Inc., with just over $1 million available, didn't have enough money to pay Frist back and continue operating. Frist solved that problem by having his campaign take out a $1.44 million bank loan, at a cost of $10,000 a month in interest, and used that money to repay himself.
Assuming the new debt would have drained all the operating funds Frist 2000 had available, according to FEC documents. Yet that didn't happen. Even after taking out such a huge loan, Frist 2000 still looked rich on paper — much richer than it actually was.
That's because Frist made a third key decision — one that experts on campaign disclosure call highly questionable — to not report the new debt on the FEC paperwork filed by Frist 2000, as required by law.
Instead, Frist told the FEC that the $1.44 million loan was held by another committee he controlled, the Bill Frist for Senate committee, which had been around since his first race in 1994. That fund was virtually dormant by 2000, with just $50,000 in the bank.
Emphasis on "fit."

There were lots of folks with signs for the march who had been waiting hours for the delay to pass. 'Possible coverup underway in New Orleans over the toxicity of the waters to prevent having to make oil, gas, and other industries have to clean it up'
"If this is a cover-up, what purpose would it serve? Well, for starters, if water and sediment is declared to be no dangerous, it doesn't have to be cleaned up. If they did admit to levels of benzene and toluene and other chemicals, guess who could be held liable? Oil and chemical companies! I'm willing to bet a few CEOs are calling their buddy, W, about it. Mayor Ray Nagin is playing a part too by not questioning these findings for a second, and happily sending people back into the city. A real Mayor would stop reinhabitation, and ask for all findings to be independently verified. After all, this is the same Administration that told us they were 100% sure Saddam had WMD."

Mer: I spoke to a woman who was obviously going to the march (make that was). She said she was on a train for two hours, just sitting there and then they had everyone get off. They told the folks who were waiting that it was an electrical repair between the NYC and Trenton, NJ stations. She said that it sounded "elective," i.e. not an emergency repair. Ha. From the WaPo...
"The security detail will include the area around the National Book Festival, which will be on the Mall between Seventh and 14th streets.
Book festival spokeswoman Audrey Fischer said organizers of the fifth annual event, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and is free and open to the public, are working with Park Police to ensure that there is appropriate crowd control in light of other events on the Mall.
First lady Laura Bush, who hosts the event each year, will have a breakfast for the featured authors at the White House this morning, but organizers are unsure whether she will make an appearance at the festival, Fischer said."
So, there you have it, the Laura2005 is not programmed for carbon based interaction.

From the AP In a hitch for some coming to the protest, 13 Amtrak trains running between New York and Washington were delayed for up to three hours Saturday morning for repair of overhead electrical lines. Protest organizers said that held up thousands coming to the rally.
Also At a rally at the U.S. Navy Memorial put on by Protest Warrior and other groups supporting Bush's policy, demonstrators denounced Sheehan as a mother exploiting her son's death.
"If I were to die in Iraq, I wouldn't want my parents to be like Cindy Sheehan," said Army National Guard Spc. Julie McManus, 20, of Drexel Hill, Pa., who was among more than 100 people holding signs. "I'd be ashamed of them."

Jeez, never in my life did I think I'd be rooting for a military coup.
Be careful what you ask for. Remember that the military is infiltrated with crazies who think they're warriors for jeebus.
We surely don't want one of THEM in charge.
As for chimpy. I grew up with an alcoholic father. There is no way, NONE, that chimpy isn't drinking again.
The strain has cracked him.
There is nothing he fears more than being exposed as a fraud and a failure- which is precisely what's happening now.

time for the famous DC park police to start under-estimating the crowd! At the last gay rights march I went to, they only counted about a third of the people there

Definitely NOT tinhat, IMO.

I have to tell you that I am totally pissed that the hurricane miissed us completely. Totally pissed.
Instead of cooling things off and giving us some much needed rain, it's going to be 101 again tomorrow.
And speaking of cats...as the Church of the Middle Ages blamed cats (widely recognised at the time as the devil's familiars) for the plague, Pope Evil Rat will soon release a document of "instruction" aimed at smearing homosexuals with the heterosexual Chruch's 1,000 year-old difficulty with pederasty.
Isn't Rove Catholic? Is he advising yet another mortal who confuses their own self with that of God?

sean- a couple of good letters to the editor in the NYTimes today on that topic. To the Editor:
Why doesn't the church bar priests who have sex with children? That would be less controversial and more to the point.
To the Editor:
Re "Vatican Expected to Exclude Gays as New Priests" (front page, Sept. 22):
Presumably, the Roman Catholic Church's concern about gays in the priesthood stems from a desire to protect children from sexual abuse by priests. If that is true, then it would be wise for the church to look at the data before deciding on a plan of action.
Reliable studies show that pedophiles (those adults who sexually abuse children) are overwhelmingly heterosexual. In fact, homosexuals are statistically underrepresented as those who sexually abuse children.
What is forgotten in all of the hysteria about priest sexual abuse is that pedophilia is about a sexual attraction to children (most often, regardless of their sex) and about access.
If priests are overwhelmingly abusing boys, it is not about their being homosexual but about that being the population to which they have access.
Further, women have far lower rates of sexually abusing children than men do. So if the church were really serious about protecting children from sexual abuse by priests, gays would not be excluded from the priesthood and ordination would be extended to women.

fom what we know so far, frist's unlikely to be convicted. proving he had inside info, even if he obviously did, is difficult.
as for his statements about not knowing the securities in his blind trust -- OK, he lied. but he lied to reporters, not federal investigators. so he's clear there.
but if the media gives this the right coverage, he's finished as a presidential wannabe.
schiavo raised doubts about his judgment. his handling of the stock sales confirmed it.
it's his version of gary hart cruising with bimbos on a boat named monkey business.
if his judgment's that fucking lousy, do we really want him as president?

Now, I know Dr. Frist very well, and I can tell you that I know in my cholesterol-clogged heart that he would never do anything as un-Christlike as to break at least two Commandments just for a couple of bucks.
You see, the those stocks were in what is called a ‘blind trust.’ That means that he could not honestly manipulate them in any way. That trust is just as blind as that poor Terri Schiavo woman was NOT blind, as Dr. Frist correctly diagnosed.
This is obviously another MIRACLE by our Lord, increasing the purse of those who conduct themselves in the Godly Republican way. God’s been busy the last five years, too, I’ll tell ya.
BTW, from the time I’ve spent in Michigan, I can tell you that there ain’t gonna be any dusky senators out of THAT state for a long time, way after the Rapture.

Yes, Carol Burnet made them a much better tabloid. I have noticed that when they do a "serious" article, they do not B.S. like they used to. Everything is so damn surrealistic including the fact we might cite the Enquirer as a news source. The times are a'changing.

I don't think doing away with celibacy would end the pedophilia.
People who have sexual attraction to children are NOT going to be satisfied with a sexual relationship with an ADULT.
But I think the celibacy requirement is bullshit.
They don't want to drop the celibacy requirement because they would have to drop the ban on birth control.

Bill Maher cited the Enquirer as a source last night.
I'm sitting in a 'store front' legal office on 6th & Broadway here in LA, courtesy of a law school chum who called me out of the blue this morning.
She lives out this way and picked me up and then she parked in her only space behind this ancient building.
While I don't think we'll have the same size crowd as DC, things are really getting busy down here. There are cops everywhere and Sophy has a bunch of carnations she intends to pass out to them on our walk over to the rally site.

sean- a couple of good letters to the editor in the NYTimes today on that topic.
Karin, thanks.
Here, within the geographic bounds of the Diocese of Covington in quasi-rural northern Kentucky, Benedict’s church will begin paying the largest settlement in US history for the molestation of more than 700 children during a 50-year cover-up of these crimes by the Diocese.
Benedict’s allegedly God-inspired broad brush becomes absurd here in Kentucky when examining the settlement dispersal rules hammered out between the Church and the lawyers for the abuse victims. Claimants will be grouped into four categories, based on the nature and severity of the abuse. Compensation will range from $5,000 to $450,000 each.
One pales when considering the awkward parsing Church fathers will utilize to spread this thin butter of absolution over the widest area possible of the very course bread of their sins.

So Sen. Frist has no connection to HCA, right? HCA has consistently been a top contributor to Frist's senatorial campaigns. Hmmm. I'm confused and I am a former securities analyst. How blind can a blind trust be if the "blinded" person can give directives to sell holdings? Seems like if the trust is truly blind, a) the owner should not have the power to direct investment decisions and b) should not know what holdings the trust even has at any given point.
