FINAL PLEA FOR CONTRIBUTION TO DR. CHUCK PENNACCHIO'S
PROGRESSIVE CAMPAIGN
As I wander around the city—quite aimlessly at times no doubt—and talk to people about Chuck Penn’s candidacy it occurs to me that I don’t know every policy position that Dr. Pennacchio has staked out. Of course, the nice thing about supporting Chuck Penn’s candidacy is that if he’s elected I’m fairly certain that he’ll actually vote in the public interest most of the time—as opposed to Ricky Santorum, who, like most Republicans, will vote against and sell out the public interest most of the time. In other words, I know that I can trust Chuck.
There’s also a big difference between Chuck Pennacchio and Bob Casey Jr., or as I call him Senatorial nominee Zell Miller from Pennsylvania.
For example, let’s take a look at the Roberts nomination. Democrats should have voted no just on principle. That principle being that President Bush generally makes terrible decisions—especially long term and which we got a chance to see in action with NOLA--and that if someone wants a seat on the highest court on the land they should at least give forthcoming answers and not smokescreens. And, sure enough, Dr. Penn would have voted no against Roberts, just as our Republican-lite Democrat Party nominee Bob Casey Jr. would have voted yes. Keep in mind that labor backs Casey Jr. even though he’s guaranteed to confirm anti-labor, corporatist judges. I’m still trying to think of what pro labor bills would make it to the floor that Bob Casey Jr. could vote yes on. The only thing that comes to mind are pork barrel projects and no votes for higher emission standards for coal plants—thus “leading” in the same way that the auto unions have “led” against higher fuel standards for cars and trucks, especially helpful when we hit 5 dollars a gallon no doubt.
It has been pointed out that people who support Chuck Pennacchio are one issue people, with that one issue being choice. But keep in mind that Bob Casey Jr. isn’t just bad on the choice issue, he’s shown incredibly bad judgment on arctic drilling, the inanely intrusive Terri Schiavo case, moratorium against the death penalty, stem cell research, and the living wage. So, Bob Casey isn’t just anti choice and robs us of intelligent women who want to control their own bodies as opposed to fundie theocrats, his whole platform is an attack against the coalition that makes up the Democratic Party coalition, which was a winning coalition for both Kerry and Rendell. It was a loser for Ron Klink, another pro life Democrat. Of course, what if the leadership of Pennsylvania is Pro life? Perhaps they might even want to lose...which, I guess, would explain a Bob Casey Jr. run for the US Senate.
So, it’s not just the one issue folks. And no I don’t buy the Kos argument that it’s the coalition. We’ve already lost the filibuster because we don’t have democrats in the US Senate who would be willing to use it. Shameful. We need democrats who stand for something

So, it’s not just the one issue folks. And no I don’t buy the Kos argument that it’s the coalition. We’ve already lost the filibuster because we don’t have democrats in the US Senate who would be willing to use it. Shameful. We need democrats who stand for something and will make a solid 40.
I mean, there’s so much gnashing of teeth at Kos and Mydd and Atrios about turncoat democrats who vote with the Republicans…doesn’t it make sense not to make Zell Miller the next Democratic Senator from Pennsylvania…? I think we can do better. Chuck Pennacchio is clearly better and I think he could actually win if we provide a contrast.
So, if you would like to nominate someone the GOP will not use to undermine the Democratic Party message and/or base then please consider giving Chuck Pennacchio a contribution today as the quarter ends. He’s looking for small contributions, 5, 10, 25 dollars, as well as big. So give what you can to help this truly progressive voice. You never know. It might even be the beginning of an opposition party. God knows we could use one.

JOE SCARBOROUGH:

Should they be made to pay for the sins of tourists from Florida that go over and gamble in New Orleans and Biloxi?”

"At the highest concentration of ascorbic acid, if given intravenously, they don't touch normal cells and they kill lots of cancer cells. We don't know why," Levine said.
According to the study, published in the Sept. 12-16 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, vitamin C led to the formation of hydrogen peroxide, a chemical that can kill cells. This suggests a potential mechanism for therapy, Levine said.
"The mechanism has to be validated in animals -- the effects tested in animals to see if this is true," he said.

Republicans all know if they don't make inroads into the Hispanic community soon, they will never again win a national election (or at least after 2010). TX, AZ, FL have all had such a huge influx of Hispanics, if we could get them to vote, the Goopers are doomed nationally."

Hey, anybody wanna buy a generator? Low hours, works great!
I drove all the way into Houston today to get an aux gas tank, so I wouldn't have to keep running out there every 2 hrs 15 min, and after 2 hrs making the stupid thing fit, got it fired up again, and as I turned back to the house to turn on the AC, what do I see? The one tell-tale light I left turned on, on the single live circuit, glaring at me with a mute "fuck you, puny Human!" gleam in it's evil photonic eye. The power was back on. After all the horrible damage reported by Entergy, and vague "estimates" of extended time for repairs, and news reports of "several weeks", which caused a ton of us to scamper to Houston and spend money we didn't really have on generators and accessories, boom, we're up and running again. Now, I suppose I should be glad I don't have to use that noisy, gas guzzling contraption any more, but, damn, guys, how 'bout letting us know what's going on here, huh? "Several weeks" my ass. Milbank, 27th September
"...Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) sent his budget director, Bill Hoagland, who cautioned that federal Katrina spending might not exceed $100 billion. But John Clerici, from a law firm that helped sponsor the event, told the group that spending would "probably be larger" than $200 billion. "It's going to be spent in a fast and furious way," Clerici said.
Sipping coffee from china cups and munching on doughnuts, the corporate crowd heard Joe McInerney, president of the American Hotel and Lodging Association, predict: "I think we'll see Mardi Gras in New Orleans to some extent this year."
Small Business Administration official Herbert L. Mitchell told them to think of the SBA as "really the federal government's disaster bank." Mitchell said his payroll has gone from 800 to 2,300 since the storm and he is adding 200 people a day as he tries to increase maximum payments to small businesses.
This sort of federal honey pot alarms fiscal conservatives. Earlier this month, the conservative Heritage Foundation complained about a 33 percent expansion of the federal government since 2001, even before the Katrina spending. "Unless lawmakers make difficult decisions now, they will dump the largest debt in world history into the laps of the next generation," Heritage concluded.
The natural enemy of this spending is Pence's 110-member Republican Study Committee in the House. House GOP leaders have taken to calling the group "the minority caucus," believing that Republicans would return to minority status if they were to follow its recommendations.
But the minority caucus lost its nerve. People arrived at Pence's speech to learn that, after he objected to YAF's original description, the topic had been changed to a more neutral question: "Have conservatives given up on smaller government?"
Pence's answer: Not in the least. The silver-haired third-termer lamented that "many Republicans see government increasingly as the cure for every social ill," and he said "we've got to figure out how to pay" for the Katrina spending.
But Pence did not have thoughts on that question, other than the RSC's "Operation Offset," a list of possible cuts that has been dismissed by the GOP leadership he lavishly praised. As for the originally planned talk questioning the leadership's fealty to small government, YAF spokesman Jason Mattera said "it would have been nice" to hear Pence's views."
I love it. Governmental disaster relief (which consists of guaranteed loans, repaid) - and the pittance paid to those who bring it - is a 'honey pot'.
I just need to point this out: young Rosie is walking around with a raw potato and is gnawing on it right now.

If all immigration ceased, there would be upward pressure on wages. That is good. With illegal immigration, there is downward pressure on wages. That is bad.
Nah. When real murkans want to go back to doing the very physical, less than sought-after jobs that legal and illegal immigrants have taken, then you may have a point.

"But Left-leaning Democrats are opposed to borders and want everybody from the second and third worlds to come and take a drag off of Uncle Sucker's joint."
No, seriously. Liberals (and some Republican presidents) recognize that there is a porous, wink-wink border and a whole lotta dishonesty about this argument that borders are sacred, nobody can cross without the right forms and the 20 relatives to vouch for them and the whole fuckin bit. That we have in effect an unacknowledged common labor market with Mexico and we might as well admit it. But it's just terribly hard to get that reality past the grim and bitter "ther takin our jobs" insane clown posse in Congress. It's not an easy issue, because no question it drags down wages overall, and I don't think people on either side of this particular issue place a high priority on honesty. This is the one issue I think Bush had good intentions on solving. I think his guest worker idea was a good start, but it would not fly in his own party.

Reminds me of that movie IIRC "a day without Mexicans".
But seriously, we have been having our streets repaved, new drainage, and water lines. I have had to talk to the workers about twenty times or so. NEVER has there been a man on any of the crews that speak english.
Couple that with all the yard crews, maids, tree trimming, and the guys working on the freeway widening. I make a point to look for white or black faces. Almost never see a black, and the whites are standing around doing management type stuff. Houston would come to a standstill without the Hispanic blue collar workers.

Goddamit people.
The degree of bigotry about lax immigration enforcement in this country is appalling - so much so that it spills into everything.
One of the main arguments by my 'superiors' in the Army as to why it was okay to harass and discriminate against me was that they believed - -believed- mind you, that my citizenship status was irregular. Not that it was, not that it ever was, but they 'thought' it was. So that made it all right.
Illegals produce more for this country in the way of monetary proceeds, in terms of benefits that are never retrieved, including such items as Social Security payments and every other form of government allocated benefit programme into which they pay but from which they receive nothing at all, than any single other identifiable group. The only actual and documented harm caused comes as a result of the expense of caring for them when they are harmed crossing the border - and that expense is born by the border towns and counties, not by somebody in Backofbeyond Ohio worrying about seeing a Mesikin.
Christ - Why on earth should I give a damn if my gardener is legal or illegal? It's not my concern nor ever will it be. Any more than the presumption that I was illegal was grounds for discrimination against me.
This is the g-d United States. People want to come here, tho for my sins any more I'm not sure why. This g-d last man in close the gate crap is about as bigotted, racialist and pointless as anything there could be - nativist sentiment is crap in this country.

yes, I am a firm believer in the free flow of both capital and labor. the point I was trying to make was the Democratic response should be two-fold: a guest worker program, and a proposal to confiscate the property (farms, factories, pool cleaning business, construction companies) of anyone hiring undocumented workers.
make it clear that stopping "illegal" immigration is as easy as stopping "illegal" drug trade. confiscation of assets would be a way to penalize the people who profit from the use of illegal labor.

Yes everybody, anti-immigration rhetoric is racism, yes, the effective way to deal with the problem is to punish the employers (exploiters) of illegals -- which is why it will never happen
Keep up the rhetoric to fire up the base -- do nothing so the people who actually run the Repuke Party can continue to exploit labor
OTOH -- when NAFTA was cooking, the OLD AFL-CIO would have been down in Mexico organizing the work force because there IS an international "brotherhood" (sorry "brother & sister hood doesn't work -- siblinghood is worse) of labor -- it is wrong to exploit poor people no matter where they were born or where they live

No, seriously. Liberals (and some Republican presidents) recognize that there is a porous, wink-wink border and a whole lotta dishonesty about this argument that borders are sacred, nobody can cross without the right forms and the 20 relatives to vouch for them and the whole fuckin bit.
The big disconnect is this:
Most Americans have no fucking clue how totally fucked the immigration service is. It's underfunded, understaffed, and a political punchbag; its rules are often self-contradictory and enforced differently based upon who you're talking to and the phase of the moon.
If you're a well-educated English speaker, it's just a tortuous, often humiliating Kafkaesque process to get a green card. (I just had to get an immigration medical ($300, cash only) that checked me out for fifteen different sexually-transmitted diseases. Way to go, USA.)
Compare it, say, to the transparent process in Canada and Australia, and the mind boggles.
In North Carolina, you have pols who want to enact 'anti-illegal' legislation that will punish people following the rules. It's easy, because no-one ever lost a vote by bashing immigrants, save from the citizens married to them.
So, frankly, I admire illegal immigrants in the US. They're delivering a hearty fuck-you to a dysfunctional system.

I love it when they find something they like and carry it around in thier mouths from place to place.
(well not a little snake or a dead bird)
It all may come down to a frieghtening possibility -- what if there isn't enough to go around? I think most thoughtfull people would agree that there isn't enough energy and other resources currently available to enable every man woman and child on earth to live as the wealthiest do. Back off the lifestyles of the top 10% and there still isn't enough to get everyone to that level either.
Now, the basic rightwing answer these days is "Every man for himself, devil take the hindmost, where's my gun?" That kind of psudo-Darwinist ideology is behind all this talk from the so called "free-market" crowd. The leftwing answer is--well, there's that problem, the left doesn't have an answer. The really, really leftwing -- i.e. communists, rely on as unrealistic a model of human behavior in order for their vision to be realized as do the fascist totalitarian master race crowd. Both camps can be summed up with the thought "Our plans would work if only 'THOSE' people weren't allowed to mess them up. We just have different ways of classifying who "those" people are. Now, there aren't very many dyed-in-the-wool Communists here (Socialists, yeah, we got those) but if we were somehow able to redistribute everything equally, I don't imagine many of us would be terrible pleased with the results.
Might may not make right philosophically but might very often makes it so . I doubt we shall ever be able to argue our way into power -- into office occasionaly but not into power. If there isn't enough to go around, our way is doomed to fail too. We shall not avoid conflict born of scarcity -- fear will always rule that situation. We dread such a thing, our political counterparts count on it.

when NAFTA was cooking, the OLD AFL-CIO would have been down in Mexico organizing the work force because there IS an international "brotherhood" (sorry "brother & sister hood doesn't work -- siblinghood is worse) of labor -- it is wrong to exploit poor people no matter where they were born or where they live
And CAFTA, same goes. But, oddly enough, some U.S. corporations are opposing CAFTA.
And, yeah, internationalized organized labor is a reasonable response to the prevalence of borderless capital.

yes, padre...d'accord...

the system itself is too huge to overturn piecemeal...

This country grew on the backs of immigrants. There's no more reason to think they're 'bad' now than there was 200 years ago.
My dad once went off on one of his rants about Pakistani immigrants now living in the terraced houses that he grew up in and around, complaining about them turning a disused church into a mosque.
I pointed out that those terraces, when he was a child, were home to Irish and Italian immigrants and their families, who built Catholic churches and went to Irish and Italian clubs to preserve their heritage, and were equally discriminated against when they arrived. Families like his, and by extension, mine.
It gave him plenty of pause for thought.

Administration Nominee to Relief Agency Draws Criticism
By Ken Silverstein
Times Staff Writer
5:36 PM PDT, September 30, 2005
WASHINGTON — Less than a month after the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency stepped down amid accusations of cronyism and incompetence, the Bush administration is being assailed for nominating another political ally to head a key agency for responding to foreign disasters.
One leading international relief group publicly is opposing the appointment of Ellen Sauerbrey to the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, and others have expressed private concerns over her lack of experience in emergency response work.
Sauerbrey, a former member of the Republican National Committee who was Bush's Maryland state campaign chairwoman in 2000, is serving as the U.S. representative to the U.N. commission on the status of women.
If confirmed by the Senate, which has not set a date for a hearing, Sauerbrey would head an agency with a $700 million annual budget that has responsibility for coordinating the U.S. government's response to refugee crises during natural disasters and wars.

and giving them a placebo
I've never understood this placebo stuff. If there is such a thing as a placebo effect in a double blind test wouldn't the subjects recieving the placebo also display a placebo effect? And even if you figure that into your tabulation, how do you know what the size of it is? Is the percentage of people displaying the placebo effect relatively constant over the course of different studies or is it variable? If it is constant why use placebos in further studies and if it is variable how can you ever know how it figures into the tests of effective drugs or treatments?
It was fucking brillinat! I had high expectations and they were exceeded. Sure there are some thing I could quibble over, but overall it was very very good.

an artificially generated shortage is still a shortage
Well, I don't agree, catalexis. It isn't a shortage; it's a political tactic. And your point about water is especially apt because, after oil -- or maybe even on a par with oil -- the availability and control of sources of potable water is *the* issue of this century, the last and the next.

you should keep in mind that mexicans, at least in my experience, don't really like it here. they prefer mexico. many of them come here to work and save money to buy a piece of land or start a business in mexico. and then they leave. others come here, leave, come back over and over again. a lot of the numbers for mexican immigration are inflated because in a lot of cases the same person is coming here 5 or 6 times.

Back to the serious topic -- I guess I misspoke and certainly did not mean to imply that an artificially created shortage should be viewed the same as a real one -- just that the rhetoric used concerning the haves vs. the have nots would be similer.
I find myself being reminded of a scene in Ursala K. LeGuin's Dispossesed where a proudly communist society faced a food shortage and were ultimatly unable to live up to the philisophically pure unselfish model. They're saying it's not feasible to work via the net anymore at all. It's just an excuse. No one in the firm has billed for a month--they need to start cutting costs, and I'm it. I'm the farthest away (other folks are in Houston, Dallas and Shreveport) and they're saying I have to find a place in Baton Rouge or go back to new orleans. With no schools for my kids. And no water or sewer services.
I have looked in something in BR for weeks now, with no luck. Plus the landlords are gouging people and requiring long lease terms. We simply aren't in the financial position to do that. My bosses bought houses there, they can't relate.

I love Vienna too, monica_nyc. Even though my mother and her brother had to leave there on the Kindertransport, and my ex-mother-in-law got kicked out of the Vienna Opera Ballet for being half Jewish.
Or maybe it was her other Romany half they didn't like.

Good night, fellow free thinkers. I need to sleep off this cold. You guys weren't kidding about its potency. I woke up with a bit of a sore throat and a cough and now I'm taking cold/flu medicine (and to get the cold/flu medicine at Target you have to show i.d. or they won't sell it to you.) Has anyone notice the staggering rise in Meth addiction under the current administration? Bush has fucking ruined everything. EVERYTHING!

My Mom was (still here, doesn't cook much now) a wonderful 'cook'. Pies, great dinners, My Dad was into it to. He'd make the sauces, gravies, ect.

Hey... It just occurred to me!
Most big white collar crimes are committed by ceo's and managers!
If we just forced all of their wives to have abortions, then crime would really drop!

Yes it is, bigvic. But I couldn't believe that a Hooters is right there near St. Stevens.
No fucking way!!!!!! Jeepers H. Chirstmas. Such a beautiful city to host such a stinking nightmare like Hooters. Did you visit the catacombs? Awesome.

Not only is there a Hooters near St. Stevens, but a MacDonalds right below the house where Strauss wrote his sappy waltzes!
And one puny statue of Beethoven in the whole city.
They're too crazy about Strauss and his sappy music.
But I did see the house where Wolfgang wrote the "Marriage of Figaro."

Ich liebe Wien
have been there half a dozen times...
one thing about it: you get to see how scale dominates...
the kunst-historisches musee (my favorite place except the Riesenrad in the praterbahn) is lodged in a huge, lavish, imposing, old Hohehzollern/Hapsburg edifice, on a promenade dominated by other immense stone structures, each as majestic (and intimidating) as the next and the last...
human scale flat disappears, is all i'm sayin'
i am also extremely fond of salzburg and munich...

Last time i was in Wien
i/we got to see a rehearsal/practice session of the Spanish Riding School...the Lippizaners...i'd seen 'em in performance, but from the very edge of the arena, which is ancient in its own right was pretty amazing...you hear the horses' explosive grunts of breath, hear and feel the ground when they landed these wondrously athletic arabesques...

Just for the record (from way upthread) it was East Tennessee that was pro-Union, or at least not-at-all-Secessionist, during the Civil War, not West.
I live in West Tennessee, alas. (Yeah, nobody held a gun to my head to move here, it seemed like a good idea for several reasons at the time--but..well...not so much anymore, and now too damn poor to do anything about it.)
Tony Horwitz has an excellent discussion of the topic--including how the Lost Cause postwar Confederate-apologetic mythos has infested people's minds to the point where they have completely forgotten what really happened--in the later parts of Confederates in the Attic, which is still quite worth a read even now, ten years after publication.
