Seriously, if she is a lesbian...
I'm somewhat conflicted about outing
her.
On the one hand, I think it's
imperative that Dems out every
prominent Repug operative/legislator

They're disgusting hypocrites and
they deserve to be publically shamed.
But Rice?
You know what? She works for an

Atrios:
For the record, I have no idea what Rice's sexuality is and in her case find it almost entirely irrelevant (if she is a lesbian, and I have no reason to believe she is, there is an issue regarding contradictions with how the media treats the private lives of public figures, but that's really a separate issue and not about her per se).

Somewhat. If she took a publicaly anti-gay stance then, yes, she'd be fair game. I think there is a double standard out there in Red America when it comes to male vs. female homosexuality. Not that they are exactly tolerant of lesbians, but they are more threatened by gay men.
If this admistration's Sec. of State were a gay man I would be in favor of outing him no matter what just becuase it would undermine the Adminstration amongst its surporters much more than outing Condi (assuming she is gay).
Obvioulsy that position is not equal treatment which I do beleive all people male, female, gay or straight deserve, but it is far past time fucking around with these fascists...

Rice warns against quitting Iraq
The US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, has said that America must not abandon its mission in Iraq.
She said the American public had to realise the consequences of ceding the country to "barbaric killers".
She warned that such a move would embolden every enemy of liberty and democracy across the Middle East.
BBC state department correspondent Jonathan Beale says the speech is part of a concerted effort to halt the US public's sliding support for the war.

Yeah, I guess I do. Look, if she gets outed, I'm not gonna shed a tear for her. She knew the risks when she got in this game.
But I still feel that using sexual preference as a weapon and outing people to damage them, even in the damage comes from the side, doesn't ultimately help the cause for tolerance, whatever the short-term gain may be. I don't certainly don't think threads like this help.
It might be a little different if she was personally pushing anti-gay legislation, but as far as I know, she hasn't.
Maybe I don't have the stomach to go for the jugular the way they do, but frankly, I'd like to hold on to my humanity.

Earlier I wrote:
Hey Tobes:

Which is it?
To which the little sociopath

And now the conclusion.....
WRONG!!!
LIAR!!!
Here's the quote -- and the link.
I sure wish Duncan Black would stop kicking me out of Eschaton. He knows how much
I enjoy going there to argue with his
regulars ---and a good argument is what that place needs. Without a little irritation,
how can you expect any pearls to throw

(AP) The release of a picture of Sec of State Rice with a strap-on penetrating the new Chief Justice Robert's rectum has so far been downplayed by the MSM. For example, Brit Hume said that this was a growing sign of the cooperation between the judicial and excutive branch. Bob Schieffer was troubled by the fact that Justice Roberts had a ball gag in his mouth. But he admitted he did not know all the facts. Karen Hughes explained to Arabic populations that the important thing was for Arabic women to be able to drive cars. So they could run down their boy friends, a la Laura Bush.

Question: Remember the 6 "snipers" who were shot dead by troops on the bridge in NO about Friday or Saturday after the storm? What really happened there? You would think that there would be SOME sort of follow-up story about it in the press, but after that afternoon I never heard a peep about it again. I mean, now everyone is claiming that there was NO crime or violence going on, but that's a pretty weird story don't you think? Who were they and why did they get into a gun battle with troops?

"Anybody disagree?" -- steve simels
I'm just tired of it being an issue. If a woman came forward and said, "I am Condi Rice's lover," the people who don't care would believe her, the people who care wouldn't. If her lying and her incompetence isn't enough to hang her, I think it would be counterproductive trying to get the right to dump her because she's a lesbian. We aren't looking to foster intolerance.
Plus, I think if you want to talk about your private life, you can. If you don't want to, you don't have to. That's what makes it a private life.

Bill Clinton's sex life became the air that the Republican breathed for a long long time. They destroyed the effectiveness of a presidency over a witchhunt on the basis of a simple affair. When they brought this down on the country, they made the backside story of every public figure's sexual life of interest to the public. If they wish to stop scrutiny of their members, they need to figure out how to put that genie back in the bottle and heal the rift that was generated. They set the standard. So be it.

Well, I don't care who's gay or not. I do care who leads our country, and those who lie daily and who live as lifelong hypocrites are lacking a moral center, and don't belong leading the nation, because they are weak and have learned to justify lies as policy. It's a character thing, not a sex thing. They ran on character, and their chief weapon is character assassination. It is merely being turned against them, and deservedly. Whatever it takes to bring them down is what we're left with, and it's their own damn fault.

No it isn't and I don't care. But if you beleive that Bush was fairly elected in 2004, you'd have to accept that his election was made possible by the homophobia of the Bush base.
Rove bragged that he got 3,000,000+ more evangelicals to vote for Bush than voted for him in 2000, and what got them to the polling station? The prospect of gay marriage, thats what.
That fact alone makes prominent Republicans' sexuality very relevant.

Of course we do. The hypocrisy is doing our head in. They just got a conservative chief supreme court this week, we know what might happen. But Condi is fair game, she's partly responsible for the deaths of thousands of irakians and americans. Q. What are the signs and symptoms of tularemia?
A. The signs and symptoms people develop depend on how they are exposed to tularemia. Possible symptoms include skin ulcers, swollen and painful lymph glands, inflamed eyes, sore throat, mouth sores, diarrhea or pneumonia. If the bacteria are inhaled, symptoms can include abrupt onset of fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, dry cough, and progressive weakness. People with pneumonia can develop chest pain, difficulty breathing, bloody sputum, and respiratory failure. Tularemia can be fatal if the person is not treated with appropriate antibiotics.

Biohazard Sensors Triggered
Mall Germ Levels Not Likely a Threat
By Martin Weil and Susan Levine
Washington Post Staff Writers
Saturday, October 1, 2005; B01
Biohazard sensors showed the presence of small amounts of potentially dangerous tularemia bacteria in the Mall area last weekend as huge crowds assembled, but health officials said they believed the levels were too low to be a threat.
Health authorities in the Washington area were notified last night that the bacteria were found in and near the area between the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial, where crowds gathered Saturday for an antiwar rally and a book festival.
The notification, which came from federal health officials through the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, said that after the initial detection, subsequent tests "supported the presence of low levels" of the bacteria. However, officials also said they did not believe the findings posed a health problem.
"We pretty much feel there is no public health threat here," said Von Roebuck, a spokesman for the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noting that there have been no reports of tularemia, the disease that is caused by the bacteria. "We just wanted to alert the medical community to watch out for cases."
Health officials said the usual incubation period for tularemia is less than a week.
Roebuck said people who were on the Mall but who do not have symptoms need not be concerned.
Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, muscle ache, joint pain, dry cough and conjunctivitis.
Officials said the quantities detected were too small for an attack.
In nature, the bacteria are found in rodents and small animals, and "the working hypothesis" is that something in the environment got stirred up, D.C. Public Health Director Gregg A. Pane said.
But he said it was puzzling that the finding was from a day when the Mall was packed with people.
"Why that day? That's what is not explained," Pane said. "It was just this 24-hour period and none since."
At least one official suggested that so many people on the Mall might have triggered the alert, since dry conditions would have made it easier to raise dust.
Tularemia is not spread from person to person. It can be contracted by direct contact with the bacteria that cause it -- by swallowing them or, if they have been suspended in air, through inhalation.
The germ that causes tularemia is considered a biohazard because it is highly infectious and was tested in the 1960s by the United States as a biological weapon. The disease is treatable by antibiotics but, if left untreated, can be fatal.
I agree, except 5 minutes at FreeRepublic shows that there is no backflip too daring that these true believers wouldn't perform to be able to continue justifying this administration.
Support the troops, except for body armor, freedom from forced reenlistment, health care, trashing an actual soldier to support a chickenhawk and his chickenhawk VP.
No nation-building, except when we feel like it.
The list goes on.
I just think using a persons' sexual orientation causes more loss than gain.
And remember that besmirched Clinton went out with higher approval ratings than St. Ronald of Reagan.

I've read this about four times, and I still don't know what the fuck it's supposed to mean.
If a person who is a pastor goes about his community judging others and prescribing an Old Testament morality to people is found with his dick in the mouth of a 13-year old hooker, Christians should decry him.
If a gay person allies him/herself with a movement that seeks to make life difficult for people like him/her in order to increase his/her own power or wealth, that person should be decried by people who oppose this philosophy. He/she should be pointed out for hypocrisy.

"Am I wrong?" -- steve simels
You're counting on people to be logical. My father was a raging anti-semite, but he bent over backward for the one Jewish guy he liked. Kind of his pet Jew. Same for African-Americans and women.
If Rice were gay, and she were outed, she would be the Andy Sullivan of the State Department. Untill she broke ranks, and then the knives would come out.
I just think the danger of promoting private "flaws" is a losing proposition.
I already believe there is no way she would win if she chooses to run for president.

Using homophobia is only going to perpetuate homophobia.
How would pointing out to homophobes that a prominent Republican is gay in order to undermine an anti-gay Administration perpetuate homophobia?
If by doing so we can negate the value of using homophobia in politics surely we are advancing the cause of equal rights.

I can understand why FUX News would be reduced to doing bullshit softball interviews with Rice. I mean, what are you going to ask someone who is probably the most ineffective Secretary of State in at least the last century? What does whe have to say these days? The usual bullshit about staying the course in Iraq?? Nobody really has any respect for her, in my opinion. Oh yeah, when she goes overseas, leaders pay lip service to her, but the minute she gets back on a plane, they give her a resounding "FUCK YOU!" and get back down to business as usual. Nobody gives a fuck about Condi Rice except Condi Rice and her ass-kissers on FOX.

Let's consider some pragmatics about Rice. If she is sheltering a lesbian lifestyle, she is then in a situation that means she can be coerced. There are many people who have held some form of security rating only to have it removed because they were susceptible to extortion. It was not the fact they had an aspect that was unpopular, but the fact it was unknown and deliberately hidden that opened them up to manipulation. Second, if she is part of a segment that is frequently discriminated against, open to hate crimes and is actively campaigned against, her condoning even by omission of these actions on others is reprehensible unless she has a stated reason for allowing it.
It doesn't matter what her specific trait is, it could be anything that under the circumstances generates questions on her ability to work in a highly classified position and her integrity.

The disease is treatable with antibiotics but, if left untreated, can be fatal.
The country has spent more than $200 million to install the sensor system known as BioWatch in more than 30 U.S. cities. Samples from sensors are collected daily to check for pathogens such as those that cause anthrax, smallpox or plague.
More than a half-dozen sensors operating from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday -- at sites including the Lincoln Memorial, Fort McNair and Judiciary Square -- detected the bacteria, Pane said he was told.
He said the CDC expected to notify hospitals nationwide as a precaution because so many people came from out of town to the Mall last weekend.
Similarly, he said, he expected area health officials to watch for symptoms into next week.
Authorities recommend that people who visited the Mall between 10 a.m. Sept. 24 and 10 a.m. Sept. 25 should see a physician if they experience symptoms.

tularemia Treatment
Victims with tularemia who do not receive appropriate antibiotics may have a prolonged illness with weakness and weight loss. Treated properly, very few people with tularemia die. A 14-day course of streptomycin is effective treatment for tularemia. Gentamicin is also effective. Although tetracycline and chloramphenicol have also been found effective, they are associated with significant relapse rates.
Although laboratory-related infections with this organism are common, human-to-human spread is unusual. Victims do not need to be isolated from others.

By the late 1960s, F tularensis was one of several biological weapons stockpiled by the US military.10 According to Alibeck, a large parallel effort by the Soviet Union continued into the early 1990s and resulted in weapons production of F tularensis strains engineered to be resistant to antibiotics and vaccines.

I wonder if the overuse of antibiotics and "anti-bacterial" products have rendered at least one generation susceptible to the mildest of infections.
I think of George Carlin's bit:
"The Hudson River was loaded with raw sewage. That's right, we swam in raw sewage. You know, to cool off. And back then the big fear was polio. Thousands of kids every year were dying of polio. But you know what, in my neighborhood, nobody ever got polio. No one. Ever. You know why? BECAUSE WE SWAM IN RAW SEWAGE. It strengthened our immune system. The polio never had a chance. We were tempered in raw shit."

This is a rhetorical move that I'm really tired of. They say "you just don't like our politics," as if we were just being intolerant of their belief system, oh poor downtrodden Republicans. This is horseshit. Politics is things we disagree about, hopefully compromise on, work something out. Something for everybody, everything for nobody. That's the process of politics. Invading another country based on a steaming pile of lies, killing tens or hundreds of thousands of people, and then instituting a policy that encourages, defends, and leads directly to systematic torture isn't politics, it's war crime. Ms. Rice was complicit in that crime. None of that has anything to do with her private life. (And if anyone makes some stupid Bosnia-what-about-the-clenis reference, they deserve to be whacked in the face with a frozen mole.)

I understand the hypocracy angle, I'm just saying I don't think it would do us much good to out her. I don't think the damage to the administration would be that high in their base, and I think that the people who care if a lesbian is in a position of power will not care about the fine point of her being a hypocrite, they will just care that she's gay.

You may have heard buzz about a documentary called Inside the Bubble, which, according to the films press release, reveals the Democrats worst fears about the Kerry Campaign a disorganized, contensious [sic], self-aborbed [sic] team that thought that they could win by not making mistakes and keeping their candidate in the public eye without every clarifiying [sic] a position on anything.
Other than needing a better spell-check device, the writer of this release needs a serious clue. Ive seen the film, which is yet to find a distributor, and its hardly what the release purports it to be.

Another trick for fire season, (one thing that California shares with Montana.) that some Montanians have done when the fires get too close.
Mount some rainbird sprinklers at the peak of your roof, and also in the yard to be able to hit the sides of your house. Normally this is not a good idea, it will make you have to paint your house more often. But if there is a fire storm, it might save your house from burning.

Oh, apropos of earlier trolling, here's a bit I just went over with my students from the official APA style guide on reducing biased language in scientific writing:
Problems of Evaluation
Problems of implicit or explicit evaluation of racial/ethnic difference arise from a number of sources. Bias may occur when the writer uses one group (usually the writer's own group) as the standard against which others are evaluated. The term culturally deprived, for example, implies that one culture is the accepted standard against which others are judged. Authors should recognize that differences arising from racial/ethnic comparisons do not imply deficits.
More subtle forms of implicit group comparisons may occur by the use of adjectives (i.e., stereotypes) to apply to most or all members of a group. Stereotypes may be positive (e.g., intelligent, industrious, superior, attractive) or negative (e.g., sinister, violent, lazy, superstitious). Qualifying adjectives, even when positive, may communicate bias (whether intentional or unintentional). For example, the phrase "the intelligent Black student" may imply that this student is an "exception to the rule."

HUD chief foresees a 'whiter' Big Easy
By Brian DeBose
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
September 30, 2005
A Bush Cabinet officer predicted this week that New Orleans likely will never again be a majority black city, and several black officials are outraged.
Alphonso R. Jackson, secretary of housing and urban development, during a visit with hurricane victims in Houston, said New Orleans would not reach its pre-Katrina population of "500,000 people for a long time," and "it's not going to be as black as it was for a long time, if ever again." http://www.washingtontimes.com/n...14710-

I remember the Connells but I think the Connells I owned was a bootleg tape, perhaps of their first lp. They were okay, kind of Smiths does Chapel Hill with guest stints and samples in and from REM, dbs, Jason and the Scorchers, Magnetic Fields, and Oh Okay.
Just saying.
I don't care if Rice is gay or not. She _seems_ like one of the less destructive Team Bush members but it's so fucking hard to tell. Even if she's _trying_ to be a good SoS, her behavoir is criminal. And there are highlights of her career that she doesn't brag about--kind of a reverse Brownie resume--the oil tanker named after her, her corporate board memberships, and the terms of her employment, for example.

NOTES ON JASS.......
imagine my surprise to notice that during my escape from metro-houston, my sojourn in LA, jim hall was going to be doing a gig at the jazz bakery.
i couldn't find anyone to join me to listen to one of the maestro's of jass guitar, so i did it solo.
it had been a long time since i had done the bakery.
let me tell you, it is a sweet venue.
what i have always liked about it is that it is a small concert hall. up close and personal. no clinking drinks. no loud conversation.
a shrine to the performers and their music.
what i particularly enjoy is how one can hear and see how the music is assembled.
i have some favorite moments at this venue...
the best was bill evans, reunited with chuck israels and larry bunker. what a great performance. my girl friend at the time knew nothing about this thing called jass. that performance blew her away. hell, it blew me away.
we caught kenny rankin some years back. another platinum performance.
and then there were my favorite memories...taking my mom and the rest of my family to experience blossom dearie and annie ross.
if you live in LA. if you travel to LA. if you have any affection for america's chamber music, if you just have an interest in how music gets made and are visiting LA, put the jazz bakery on your itinerary.

Look, the true test if you think it is irrelevant is not to mention it. The left blogosphere has got to stop this juvenile bullsh*t tactic of making a big deal out of the sexual orientation of people it doesn't like--like DD or JG--then passing it off as just an interesting sidelight. And bad as that is for folks who are out or nearly out, it is even worse when it comes to rumors of this sort.
I can hear the Barney Frank argument, complete with the Kapo analogy, being offered up to justify this. So this is how you're going to fight for gay rights--by using the stigma attached to being gay or lesbian in the minds of most of the public to humiliate your opponents? Who's the homophobe?
And please don't tell me that the impeachment makes everyone's private life fair game. If that's your excuse then why not go all the way and start spreading lies that Rick Santorum adopted a black child?--after all the Rove forces did that to McCain in SC in 2000. Anyone willing to set any limits here?
And pardon me for seeming prudish, but when did people who consider themselves left start referring to Rice as a c*nt? Why stop there?

Nah, I like being on-stage, drama queen that I am.
On a very similar line of thought...Several people mentioned, in recent conversations, a Diane Sawyer/ABC tour of George Clooney's Italian villa this past week. I didn't see the broadcast but diverse people seperately mentioned curious elements in it.
In the interview, Clooney said "he would never have a child from his loins" and other star fluff such as the typical fan mag question involving preference for female blonds, brunettes or redheads.
While these questions might be iffy, everyone wondered why ABC chose a particular Edward R. Morrow Person to Person interview for the Clooney interview. Clooney was hyping his latest movie about Murrow but ABC only used portions of a Person to Person interview with Liberace. They even asked Clooney the very questions Murrow was posing to the sparkling "Lee". Was Diane just being mean or was she being some strange morning TV version of subtle.
Clooney is wonderful and even if he lusted after fish as did Troy McClure on The Simpson's it wouldn't affect me opinion of him.
Should my already low opinion of Nixon's favorite intern be lower???

Oh, I don't know. This might've been a deal done by Fox to show their viewers the human side of individuals. I think it was harmless banter. Not something that men -- particularly straight -- would do, but women are a different breed.
The upshot is that I wouldn't read too much into this little episode. I'll admit that rumors have been flying around DC for some time. If she's a lesbian, then she's mighty quiet about it, because she sure as shit doesn't show up at lesbo bars.

I don't see what the problem is.
Dems outing gay Republicans is hardly
unfortunate, intolerant, or disagreeable.
It was said upthread that the justification amounts to a "They did it first!" defense. Not so. This is not tit-for-tat.
Republicans merely expanded the acceptable bounds of public discourse. If you wanna curl up in the fetal position and let Karl Rove go a-gay-bashin' every four years, be my guest. But don't pretend to be my victim. And don't expect the rest of the country to be your co-(bashed)victim, either.
The point is, you're expecting the rest of the country to absorb the political damages from not responding in kind. And I don't mean "everyone's fair game" as if this were a hunting party.
Rather, this is a "what's saucy for the goose, is saucy for the gander" situation.
Republicans have no compunction about tarring Dems with every lie in sight, and to self-limit your tactics -- even by merely and neutrally levelling the playing field -- is to choose defeat, victimhood, and disempowerment.
Plus -- politically, it's win-win for Dems. If there's no shame in being gay, then Dems should celebrate each newly-gay public persona -- and will gain politically from those 'out-comes.'
If Repubs are really bigoted, then the homophobe base will peel away or fragment. It also exposes the lie of the party of moral values meme -- critical work!
But mostly, after the Repugs damaged this country by dragging us through 8 years of gossip, 'horror,' and personal attacks about the Clinton's personal life, then the least our gay and/or easily-outraged ideologically-ossified Dem compatriots could do is shut up and fight back.
Rather than stupidly clinging to a misperceived standard of purity. The Repubs won't stop gay- and Dem-bashing just because liberals are bleating about some tepidly-held principles that no one cares about, that do not make a political difference, and that they didn't bother to defend during the previous Administration's trials/travails.
So level the playing field by simply making as many truths public as possible, let the facts fall where they may, and be proud of it.
It's called WINNING.
As long as your average contemptible Beltway Insider continues smugly pretending they're one up on the rest of us, anything's fair, and just.
Buncha nambys-pambys.

How disappointing; a woman in power who is unmarried isn't called down for her politics, but for her supposedly fair game for comment sexuality. So when the right calls Hillary a lesbian, do you guys get upset or do you join in?
Condi is a liar and will sell her soul for power. People in Iraq are dying everyday in great numbers and she helps keep that going. That is the point.

Condoleeza Rice has indeed been called on her politics. She has also been called on the integrity she possesses none of, and which she will not have impugned.
More to the point, Rice has done zero to clean Republican house, or hold them accountable for a) lies or b) attacks on the personal lives of Dems.
Kitty, it's Orwellian you would accuse Dems of hypocrisy. You forget the Repubs lied about Hillary, (and as far as I know, and not that I care) the Dems have been outing folks truthfully. Just for once I'd like the goody-two-shoes, "responsible," "high-road" Dems to choose unity and victory instead of losing and selfish special-interest concerns.
Face it: the Repubs widened the scope of acceptable coarse discourse. The Dems supinely let them. Exposing the truth is not the same as a personal attack; it merely levels the playing field and uses the same tools instead of unilaterally disarming for the sake of false principles.
What's saucy for the goose, is saucy for the gander.
This is hardly a feminist issue. If anything, Dems would out Rice and promptly celebrate her sexual orientation -- not attack it.
That she has no integrity, and will not have that lack impugned -- that they will and should attack. That, and her hypocrisy, is what they do attack. Not the fact that she's a single woman; even her orientation is really irrelevant here.
