Atrios is right; it's a total crock. And if Libby's permission were "coerced" then it can't be "uncoerced." Judy just got tired of being in jail. I'd still like to know whether Bolton's visit was to tell her to stay quiet or if it was to tell here what she was allowed to say. Whatever, they were willing to risk how shitty it looks to ensure that Judy got the message straight from the mustache. Susan McDougal makes Judy look like a pansy. It is pretty clear ol' judy was as happy as a clam to work with her sources to discredit folks who were discrediting her original storyline on WMD. In the heat of reporting on a story that is tending one way (as in touting WMD) there is a huge tendency for the reporter to get invested with the folks who agree with what the stories are saying; they want to feed you more stuff that serves them and you (the reporter) want to show that your stories so far have been righteous.
It ought to be apparent to everyone along about now that Judy was doing more than just gathering facts. She was also a conduit for information that never got published. One reason it didntget published is because the news desk wasnt buying it.

The people who piss me off the most are the yuppies with huge mortgages and a very expensive life style. Whether or not she even wrote one is irrelevant to the investigation, which is trying to determine which administration officials were leaking CIA agent identities.
The whole argument makes no sense whatsoever...Miller somehow being more innocent because Novak outed Plame instead of Miller, doesn't matter. Because this is about what the administration told people, not who wrote about it.

Ah, Silleigh, it appears that another of Haloscan's helpful mind-fucking bells and whistles is a feature that processes code that is being previewed and transforms it into tags.
Like Seinfeld's car rental company, which was good at taking the reservation but couldn't get the hang of making the reservation, I fear that you may have previewed but failed to check the view beneath the preview.
Not an exact analogy, to be sure, but I just happened to notice the code in the text-box transforming into tags after I punched "preview", even though the displayed preview looked OK.

"Let's not waste our time talking, my sweet, we have to make the most of our 30 minutes..."
[Libby] closed the letter [to Judy Miller] on this personal note (although he wasn't quite right on when autumn begins): "You went into jail in the summer. It is fall now. You will have stories to cover--Iraqi elections and suicide bombers, biological threats and the Iranian nuclear program. Out West, where you vacation, the aspens will already be turning. They turn in clusters, because their roots connect them. Come back to work---and life. Until then, you will remain in my thoughts and prayers."
It is really astongishingly (badly) poetic. It almost tempts us to recall our theory about the purpose of the Bremer Iraqi Flag: it fits too perfectly into various theories, it's a false confirmation.

The answer is RIGHT THERE in the MSM's reflexive comment. She never wrote an article BECAUSE IN THIS INSTANCE SHE WAS ACTING AS AN AGENT OF LIBBYROVE and she went to jail BECAUSE FITZGERALD KNEW SHE WAS IN THE CONSPIRACY and was giving her a chance to flip on them or at least otherwise contribute to his case. What's his case? The judge granting the subpoenas said that Fitzgerald's case was about the plot to get back at Wilson.

But isn't the point that if someone gay is working for an administration that has anti gay policies that they deserve to be exposed as a hypocrit? That's certainly worse than pointing out the hypocrisy.
If someone in the decision making level of the Nazi party had belonged to one of the groups being persecuted by the Nazis wouldn't it have been a good idea to expose them? You might warn them that you were going to do it but it would at least have the effect of preventing them from working for the Nazis.

There are Dem plans out there for everything from Iraq to the economy to global warming.
The fact that a regular here doesn't think there is shows how good a job the SCLM has done in NOT fucking reporting any of it.
flory, Business Manager
I don't buy the vast right wing media conspiracy theory. The corporate media is going to have a natural administration bias because most of them are stupid and lazy, and it's easier to relay what their sources tell them than to practice journalism, and it's too risky to jeopardize the "access" gravy train by questioning the party line. But apart from an occasional fund-raising letter, what are the congressional Dems doing to publicize their ideas? Running issue ads? Doing the talk show circuit and actually talking about issues rather than GOP-bashing? Reaching out to the anti-war movement? Naah--too much work, and too likely to expose their own complicity in the ongoing financial train wreck that is this Congress.
The three "issues" at the top of the DNC web site are "Republican leader Tom DeLay indicted," "Frist stock sale under investigation," and "Democrats fight for Independent Katrina Commision." And of the other 20 items on the page, only one, a Katrina relief plan, appears to be a plan or a strategy, as opposed to self-congratulatory feel-good pap, or DeLay and Bush bashing. I don't know if it's just a bad web site, or if it is symptomatic of a wider problem, but based on how good a job the Dems are doing at getting all their plans publicized in the press, I'm guessing it's the latter.

so it will become the conventional wisdom and Judy will go down in journalistic history as a brave soul standing up for the rights of confidential sources everywhere.
I'm convinced that her grandstanding was a ploy to try and get out of testifying about her own involvement in the scandal, not as a reporter, but as a full fledged player. As the primary conduit to the MSM for their bogus WMD stories, Miller was this administration's unofficial secretary of propaganda.
The garbage that she was reporting about Iraq was exactly the sort of thing that Joe Wilson was trying to tear down. As such, she had as much of a motive for wanting to damage Wilson as anyone else.

The DNC is not a policy making body -- its a fundraising arm, pure and simple.
If you want policy -- go to the people who make policy. The minority leaders of the various committees concerned. They all have plans.
And in order to get their plans on the babblefests -- they have to be invited. Which they're not. Because what they have to say isn't what the mediabots want to hear.
Biden and Joementum are the public faces of the Democratic party for a reason. The GOP and the corporate media like it that way.

Of course, there is the larger polite fiction that when Bush said he wanted to get to the bottom of this that this needed to be "investigated" -- that is, that if he really wanted to get to the bottom of the matter he couldn't find out within the hour by demanding that everyone on his staff telll him what happened (assuming that he didn't already know).
That is, the investigation was allowed to proceed with little media emphasis on the undeniable fact that somebody was guilty, and it was just a matter of determining who.
And the SCLM never did want to say anything that might puncture this polite fiction.

The Miller Affair is as stinky as it gets, in the tradition of the Alger Hiss case and Watergate and Iran-Contra.
The media fixated on small potatoes like blowjobs and suspect land deals and futures trading, and before that on things like Dukakis looking silly in that tank and not standing foursquare for spousal revenge in the case of wife-rape and so forth.
Meanwhile the fertile GOP plutoscape brought forth mighty trees of entangled iniquity, vast thorned redwoods and sequoias and Tasmanian giants of collusion and avarice and mendacity and raw brutal powermongering-- vaporous groves of evil that scarcely attract the Fourth Estate's interest.
Miller and her cohorts are luminous as foxfire on a rotten log with corruption and deceit. The Bolton visit(s) alone reek of impropriety, and beg explanation.
However, I expect that the kabuki dance-- or dog-and-pony show, if you prefer-- will prevail. The bobbleheads and pundits will blather on with their usual one-two punch of facile ignorance or purposeful misdirection, and some dumbed-down, tarted-up version of the significance of it all will be ladled like farina into the bowls of Amerikan TV, to be carelessly devoured or pushed aside in favor of Cheetos.

It appears to have been a rough week for the Republican Party, with DeLay's indictment, Miller talking, Larry Franklin's plea bargain, the forcing of the release of the worst of the Abu Ghraib photos, more revelations on the Abramoff and Safavian scandals, continued fallout from the debacle of the non-response to Katrina, more problems in Iraq, and on and on. People are starting to notice a pattern. From Sam Smith:
"WITH the indictment of Tom DeLay there can no longer be any doubt that with the Bush regime we are observing not a variation on politics but chronically criminal and corrupt behavior parading as ideology. This is not a movement but a mob and a disservice as much to conservatives as to progressives and moderates. The whole purpose of the Bush machine is to line its own pockets, increase its own power, and suppress any who would complain about it. For the media to treat what is happening as just another political discussion merely makes it a tool of the biggest fraud ever perpetrated on the American public. It is time the press learned to distinguish clearly between a con and a concept."
and Josh Marshall (there are links in the original text):
"On paper, Jack Abramoff was a lobbyist. And he made a great deal of money for himself. But if you think of Jack Abramoff as just a crooked lobbyist most of the facts coming out about what he did don't make a great deal of sense. He was a key player in a very big political machine and he was managing a slush fund.
Look at the pattern.
Notice how all Abramoff's clients seemed to get 'bilked' out of large sums of money that ended up going to other conservative foundations, consulting firms, Ralph Reed, lobby shops, Grover Norquist, astroturf organizers, politicians, etc.? All of them part of Washington's Republican infrastructure?
In the case of Abramoff's work for Flanigan and Tyco, Abramoff ended up sending the greater part of their $2 million lobbying fee to an astroturf outfit called Grassroots Interactive - an outfit allegedly controlled by Abramoff and run by a guy who now works as the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor of Maryland.
The money ended up diverted to other purposes beside the honorable task of whipping up populist enthusiasm on behalf of corporations that relocate to PO boxes in Bermuda to avoid paying taxes. Tyco lawyer George Terwilliger claims the firm 'was a victim of a rip-off.'
So is that it? Another rip-off? Another corporation which hires a lawyer out of the White House only to get taken in by Jack Abramoff's wiles? Please. How many times can one operator pull off the same stunt? How many times do big chunks of these pay days get passed on to other operators and organizations without the operators and organizations getting wise to the game?
These odd diversions aren't the exception but the rule.
The Republican machine built by DeLay, Norquist, Abramoff, et al. and pulled into

it's on it's way to GWPDA so she can check it out.
Some of Miller's colleagues at the Times, who declined to be identified because they are challenging their bosses' stance, say much of the staff is frustrated and confused.
"People are angry," one staffer said. "Was this a charade on her part for martyrdom, or a real principle? She wanted to resurrect herself from the WMD thing," the staffer said, a reference to Miller stories about Iraq possessing weapons of mass destruction that turned out to be wrong.
"I am truly depressed," another staffer said. "It absolutely makes no sense. Basically she did the same thing Matt Cooper did, with the intervening weeks in jail. But I just don't buy that she's doing it for her own image enhancement."

As I explained before, Judy knows her testimony will be the one that finally sends a few of the most valuable insiders up the river. She probably doesn't even know if she can lie and get away with it, or will end up in the slammer herself for perjury. She's been the moll of this ruthless mob for some time. The NYT Times also feels she has been a very valuable asset to them, an actual insider into the fascist regime on their staff that gives them some inside stories and advance lies. So she is VERY sorry that she will be the unwilling witness that sends one or two of the capos up. She is so sorry that she offered to go to prison for a while as an act of contrition. But the administration knows (through some of the visitors to the jail who evaluated her) that she won't hold out forever so they told Scooter to symbolicaly throw in the towel for them and say go ahead and do what you have to do with the grand jury.
After she sings, one of two things will happen. Bolton and Andy Card will invite her out on the lake to "go fishing" with them and she won't come back, or one evening three years from now she'll be cooking up sausages alone in her summer cottage in Montauk and someone will quitely come in through a screen door behind her and settle the account with three quick ones behind the ear.
Nuttin personal, it's just business.

Arthur really, really likes pate. Almost as much as Mr. Plushy. As much nearly, as I do.
Where to plant the dill. I take as my model a neighbor. Her house faced east. Somehow, along the grass strip along the driveway, dill got started - oceans of dill, six feet high, dill WEED. She did nothing to it. Her dirt was poor. It got just about 8 hours or more of sun. I have a place just exactly like that, on the front of my house. Last year, I tried it in the same facing area in the back of the house and then I ignored it. It grew nicely. Dill is a perennial. I think the spot I have in mind in the -front- will not be disrupted by anything and can just sit there and self-propagate. The key is the number of sun hours it gets and the badness of the soil.
Now. About the yellow crookneck squash....

GI and RotG both romanticize the upper clases (the introduction to GI has Renoir wishing for the days of gentlemen and chivalry when it was outdated chivalry that inspired massive charges on machine gun positions), and the scariest part is, they're done so damn well that any other bit of class warfare propaganda can only be said to be a vastly inferior attempt at what they did. It is a remaining-humanity test for the commie. It's bourgeois decadence, and it's still beautiful, so if both can be admitted to then the beetle hears the violin so to speak.
In particular we get stuck on the Russian book-burners: book-burning was identified in Europe with the Inquisition (long before the Nazis) as a kind of insane willful barbarism. But isn't it a great socialistic act of protest that the hungry, freezing Russians burn the things in their rage? The treatises on geometry are far more useful keeping away frostbite. The fact that Renoir let that through, of course allowing the other side a voice, is proof that something more than unusually talented propaganda is at work here. Similarly in RotG we are always able to sympathize totally with the pathetically manly cuckolded huntmaster.

It's an awful story.
SOUTH GEORGIA: ATTACKS ON IMMIGRANTS KILL 5 Five men were killed and at least six people were critically wounded in attacks in trailer parks outside Tifton, the authorities said. Two suspects were sought. Some victims, all of them Mexicans, were beaten with an aluminum bat found at one site, and at least one was shot, Sheriff Al Whittington of Colquitt County said. (AP)

The DNC is not a policy making body -- its a fundraising arm, pure and simple.
If you want policy -- go to the people who make policy. The minority leaders of the various committees concerned. They all have plans.
flory, Business Manager
You know that, and I know that, and we both know what doors to pry open when we want to get the details. But the web site anyone inclined to be curious about Democratic "plans" might go to--the one that comes up in Google when you search on "democratic party"--www.democrats.org--appears to focus entirely on the shortcomings of the GOP rather than any strengths of the Dems. I think that's significant and symptomatic of a party woefully lacking a strategy for communicating a unified message.
By calling the SCLM stupid and lazy, I by no means intended to imply that they aren't also biased--they're owned by big corporations run by rich guys, and big corporations and rich guys are usually pro-GOP. Yet I don't think I've ever heard a major Dem officeholder complain that a major media outlet refused to report their position or take their phone calls. I read quotes from high-ranking Dems in every day's NYT and hear them on every day's evening news. There may be a bias, but there's not a gag order. It's insufficient and unproductive to blame the media for the Dems' apparent lack of any coordinated strategy to bring attention to their important plans.
Based on the 5-minute speeches and such from Dems late at night on CSPAN when no one is watching, there are no shortage of Dems with good ideas. The Congressional Black Caucus and the Thirtysomething Dems and the like seem to have accurately assessed the political climate and the big problems. Now we need some leadership at the party level (and no, Joementum doesn't count) who can get enough Dems to agree on single solutions to specific issues that we can put together a message that the average TV viewer will understand. The average voter isn't as dumb as a lot of people think they are--but they aren't willing to do hours of research and analysis to uncover the positions the Democratic party. It's got to be out there in their face all the time, like the Contract with America, which may have been disingenuous and ill-advised, but which at least made the papers.

This may turn out to be like the Jersey City incident and be only a common crime but it doesn't sound like it:
SOUTH GEORGIA: ATTACKS ON IMMIGRANTS KILL 5 Five men were killed and at least six people were critically wounded in attacks in trailer parks outside Tifton, the authorities said. Two suspects were sought. Some victims, all of them Mexicans, were beaten with an aluminum bat found at one site, and at least one was shot, Sheriff Al Whittington of Colquitt County said. (AP)

Did you hear the story that she went to lunch with Pam Anderson at a restaurant and started whining that she wanted someone to read the menu to her because "reading is dumb"?
I understand Pam was ready to get up and walk out of there, she was so embarrassed!

The dead were all Mexican immigrants. All lived in mobile homes in Tift County and neighboring Colquitt County, rural areas where migrant workers toil on cotton and peanut farms. Some of the victims were beaten with an aluminum baseball bat found at one of the scenes, and at least one victim was shot, police said.
Two suspects were being sought. Investigators believe the killers targeted Hispanic immigrants in the string of overnight robberies about 180 miles south of Atlanta.
Might be. But it might also be racially motivated.

Well we'll know soon enough. If it's a hate crime, it will drop off the face of the earth. If it's an immigrant on immigrant crime, it's going to be a 24/7 story.

Yet I don't think I've ever heard a major Dem officeholder complain that a major media outlet refused to report their position or take their phone calls.
Guaranteed way to make sure you never again have ANY media exposure that isn't a paid political ad?
Bitch in public about the way the media treats you.
Now we need some leadership at the party level (and no, Joementum doesn't count) who can get enough Dems to agree on single solutions to specific issues that we can put together a message that the average TV viewer will understand.
Say this happens. And I'm not disagreeing that we could do better.
How do you plan to get it out to the public?

IIRC, Barney Frank has complained that when the House Dems would announce a news conference not a single reporter would show up -- hard to know how to deal with that (besides having George Soros buy Fox News & give everyone their new marching orders -- I bet most would stay & tell us that Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia)

"If Bush says "play along or I fire you" to people on his staff,..."
That would mean that W has both balls and brains enough to make a statement like that. I believe he has already proven his lack of both, so I don't seem him the source of such a threat or ultimatum. Herr Rove now, that's another story.
Because I have come to this late this evening, can anyone explain why or by whom this 'love letter' and apparently other Judy letters are suddenly now public?
Please excuse my suspicious nature, but I tend to always question that which occurs suddenly and without clarity of purpose.

Another polite thing we are supposed to believe is that reporters are legally bound to honor their commitments. They are not, of course. While they may not be able to gather backround info in the future, they have legal obligation to withold their current source(s).

Look, Atrios, I think you've got it all wrong. It is coercive to demand that a person confess or lose a cushy goverment job carrying enormous perquisites, not to mention the sheer power.
The odd aspect of this story is the sudden pretense that just because the person subject to coercion says, "Really. Honest. I'm doing this of my own free will," that his waiver is not in fact coerced. If there is true coercion, that is just what you'd expect him to say; and saying it doesn't negate the existence of the coercion.
So. I think Matt Cooper engaged in the intellectually ridiculous fiction that a source's statement that there was no coercion could be taken at face value because, for good personal reaons including his obligations to his family, he was just not willing to go to jail. (And I think his source was taken aback at his turn.)
But what about Judy? There's the question. She was willing to go to jail. Did she just suddenly get sick of prison food? I would guess that's it, but who knows? And if that's all it was, why didn't she come around sooner (or hadn't she bargained for yet another year or two of that food)? Or did some compromise Fitzgerald made (e.g., no testimony in certain areas) suddenly make testifying possible for her?
There's many a question that's not answered yet, and maybe never will be.

The reason it couldn't happen until now: Libby just found out about these things called telephones, that allow you to communicate with someone from very long distances via an electrical current. Originally invented by Alexander Graham Bell (although there is some debate about this), these devices may one day revolutionize communications, if a method of providing cheap availability to the masses is found.

Er, uh Dad, this whole Judy Miller thing isn't working out like Scooter and Karl planned.
Spud1 got it right--there's no legal obligation to protect a source. Further, no one, and I mean no one in journalism that I've talked to, has ever heard of "waivers," coerced or otherwise. The whole thing is total BS.
