I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

GravatarBonsoir mesdames et messieurs

Gravatarclose enough to first

Gravatarseconds!

GravatarI just don't know anymore...

Gravatarok, now....if I refresh the page, will Friday go away again?

the angst...the angst!!

Gravatarspinoza?

Gravatardo you think we piss off Atrios when he post a topic and we start the thread with anything but the topic?

GravatarMight have been discussed to death in earlier spots, but I love the way so much of the press is NOT happy over how Judith Martyr regained her freedom.

Gravatarbut this is the storyline that the MSM will faithfully repeat to all those soccer moms not really paying attention.

so it will become the conventional wisdom and Judy will go down in journalistic history as a brave soul standing up for the rights of confidential sources everywhere.

GravatarSilleigh - Since the threads are coming and going faster than w's excuses for starting an unnecessary war, doesn't matter if it was discussed before. Everything old is new again, dontchaknow?

GravatarIt pisses me off that people who should know better beleive this scenario. Why do these upper middle class yuppies and these intellectual literarie believe these lies.

The fucking New York Times.

GravatarMemory hole, bitches!

GravatarMy not-very-inspired inspiration this morning, after reading more about La Miller was that when the inevitable feature film version of Laverne and Shirley gets made, Judy and her twin Bumiller can play the leads.

W and Chalabi can be Lenny & Squiggy. Why fight typecasting?

GravatarSince the threads are coming and going faster than w's excuses for starting an unnecessary war...

Oooh, nice one.

GravatarChalabi's more of the Carmine Ragussa of the group.

The Big Ragu and all that.

GravatarAtrios is right; it's a total crock. And if Libby's permission were "coerced" then it can't be "uncoerced." Judy just got tired of being in jail. I'd still like to know whether Bolton's visit was to tell her to stay quiet or if it was to tell here what she was allowed to say. Whatever, they were willing to risk how shitty it looks to ensure that Judy got the message straight from the mustache. Susan McDougal makes Judy look like a pansy. Couldn't handle three months for her "morals."

Gravatarcan anybody tell me how to quote one of you with itallics (on my mac), thank you

GravatarIt is pretty clear ol' judy was as happy as a clam to work with her sources to discredit folks who were discrediting her original storyline on WMD. In the heat of reporting on a story that is tending one way (as in touting WMD) there is a huge tendency for the reporter to get invested with the folks who agree with what the stories are saying; they want to feed you more stuff that serves them and you (the reporter) want to show that your stories so far have been righteous.
It ought to be apparent to everyone along about now that Judy was doing more than just gathering facts. She was also a conduit for information that never got published. One reason it didntget published is because the news desk wasnt buying it.

GravatarHopefully, the media will not affect the outcome of the grand jury.

The corporate media is not my friend. I don't watch it any more.

Gravatarso who is Judy protecting now?

Gravatar but this is the storyline that the MSM will faithfully repeat to all those soccer moms not really paying attention.

I wonder about that, actually. I've only hit a few stories about this off Google News, but several involved great unease among journos over this. There may not be much more of that almost-tearful "didn't even write a STORY about it" nonsense.

Gravatarso it will become the conventional wisdom

Yup. just as I heard, on three seperate channels yesterday, that the dems don't have any ideas. Even Mark Shields on the Newshour spouted that shit.

GravatarPeople are to lazy to read the news, too stupid to recognize lies, and too rushed to examine the facts. Shit, they don't even know it the "facts" are real or not.

The people who piss me off the most are the yuppies with huge mortgages and a very expensive life style. They think all this good stuff is coming to them, that it will always be there, and therefor they don't have to worry about the economy, the environment, or the War in Iraq. These people like Bush because he's probusiness, and they think that means "pro Yuppie."

Boy are they in for a shock.

GravatarSo, how stable is this now?

.

Gravatarso who is Judy protecting now?

Judy.

GravatarSusan McDougal makes Judy look like a pansy. Couldn't handle three months for her "morals."
Hecate

They prolly told Judy at the outset that they had the whole thing greased and she wouldn't be in for more than a few weeks.

None of the rest of their lies worked out -- and she believed every fucking one of them -- why should this be any different?

GravatarSorry mer, I had to check with Scooter Libby to see if I could post.

GravatarExcellent, beautiful point, Atrios.

Get rid of them and move on. Why not? The lame duck President seizes the opportunity to appear fresh and new by blowing out the old farts who've screwed up.

Gravatar"just as I heard, on three seperate channels yesterday, that the dems don't have any ideas. Even Mark Shields on the Newshour spouted that shit.

Well...as long as they continue to use the "sit around and watch the GOP screw up" strategy, instead of taking advantage of the miserable poll numbers by advancing their own vision for the country, this talking point is going to keep circulating.

Gravataryeah.
I don't get that.
Just because Judy never got an article published about Plame doesn't mean she never wrote one.

GravatarFor italics, enclose the passage you want to italicize with these tags:
begins your italics
ends your italics.

You can bold text by using the same tags except with a "b" where the "i" is.

GravatarI agree with every word Atrios just posted.

Gravatarcan anybody tell me how to quote one of you with itallics (on my mac), thank you
Plum P

(i)quote to be italicized(/i)

replace the parentheses with < and >. Make sure there are no spaces between the quote and the tags.

GravatarNO, dammit, I typed those tags in CODE and previewed it, where the hell did they go???

GravatarTREASON BY THE NUMBERS

GravatarIn this administration, personal responsibility is for chumps.

Gravatar"Just because Judy never got an article published about Plame doesn't mean she never wrote one.
HoneyBearKelly. | Email | 10.01.05 - 6:26 pm | #
"

Whether or not she even wrote one is irrelevant to the investigation, which is trying to determine which administration officials were leaking CIA agent identities.
The whole argument makes no sense whatsoever...Miller somehow being more innocent because Novak outed Plame instead of Miller, doesn't matter. Because this is about what the administration told people, not who wrote about it.

GravatarThe MSM, or corporate media are scared shit of blogs. Right now MSM/CM is doing one of three things:

Making half-hearted efforts to get an "internet presense."

Criticizing Blogs for being undisclipines, chatty etc. and therefore not worthy of respect.

Humming along ignoring the internets.
Dunces.

GravatarNim

Polosi, Conyers, Kerry, Kennedy and all released statments and plans from the cleanup of NOLA to the FUBAR that is Iraq. It's not that they are not coming up with stuff, it is that nobody's listening.

GravatarPlum P, are you asking how to italicize text?

Just bracket the text with these tags:

<i>to be italicized</i>

GravatarOne day these gravatars will turn into nanomachines that will burrow into your body and reprogram your brain to become a living advertisement for itself.

GravatarNim I only said that because that's the point MSM seems to want to hammer into our heads.
"She never wrote an article but she went to jail".
Blah blah blah. Over and over and over.
Even Olbermann (who I love) never stops saying this.

Gravatarinstead of taking advantage of the miserable poll numbers by advancing their own vision for the country, this talking point is going to keep circulating.
Nim

Google around a bit.

There are Dem plans out there for everything from Iraq to the economy to global warming.

The fact that a regular here doesn't think there is shows how good a job the SCLM has done in NOT fucking reporting any of it.

GravatarPlum, there's also this nifty place to learn about tags, courtesy of our own lovely Kent: Haloscan HTML Sandbox.

GravatarNone of the rest of their lies worked out -- and she believed every fucking one of them -- why should this be any different?

Judith Fucking Miller. Is. Not. A. Victim.

Nor a misguided believer. She's a willing participant in the deluge of lies and misinformation that you're being fed on a daily basis.

GravatarI have leftover lemon bars. And chopped chicken liver from today's Balducci's run. Help yourselves!

GravatarAnyone else notice a great divide forming. Those with gravators vs. those without. Seriously, this could cause a rift in party loyalty resulting in the complete breakdown of the American way.

GravatarOh, joy, the little sociopath
thinks he's somehow adding to
the discussion.

Hey Tobes -- the "proof: is back.

Why aren't you bringing it on?

Gravatar"It's not that they are not coming up with stuff, it is that nobody's listening.

That's true enough. Although it would help if the putative "Democrats" that do get media facetime would get on board, instead of sticking to the Republican-lite positions.

Gravatarmany of the gravatars are just black boxes on my screen. why is that...as with

Gravatar And chopped chicken liver from today's Balducci's run. Help yourselves!

Oooooooh, may I? I'll run chop some sweet onions for that.

GravatarPlum P, are you asking how to italicize text?

Just bracket the text with these tags to be italicized

thank you all! But i have a french keyboard and i only have « » and it's not working! (yes i am that dumb with computers)

GravatarUmmm, about the only thing Rove knows how to do is be a back-stabbing, nasty, underhanded, dishonest, sleazy, and just plain evil (and avaricious) flunky for stoopid Republicans. Once the Republican party is tossed en masse into the dustbin of political history, there won't be anyone that needs his ... umm, "talents". Poor Karl.....

Cheers,

GravatarQL -

I think you are correct about the Dem plans. They might get mentioned in the media ONCE but then its down the memory hole.

The Cons however have not only the MSM but their own noise machine.

Gravatargravatar.com is down for maintenance.

Your gravatar might show up on one post then not.

GravatarWhat's the likely subject of the opening skit on SNL?
Bush screwing up NO? Bush screwing up Iraq? Bush screwing up our economy? Bush screwing up the environment? Bush nuking Iran? Bush drinking?

Gravatarthank you all! But i have a french keyboard and i only have « » and it's not working! (yes i am that dumb with computers)

Chere, look for the uppercase on the comma and full stop keys. What do you see there, hein?

GravatarSilleigh: thanks, i'll fo read the link and learn everything it says

Gravatar And chopped chicken liver from today's Balducci's run. Help yourselves!

What with GWPDAs champagne, we're having a genuine party. Is it to celebrate Judy's release?

GravatarGWPDA,

Got your thinly sliced sweet onion, chopped gerkins, and chopped hard boiled egg, along with thin toast, right here. Help yourself!

GravatarJudith Fucking Miller. Is. Not. A. Victim.

I never meant to imply i thought she was some kind of victim.

At best, she's another exemplar of the power of cognitive dissonance.

At worst, she's undergone willing suspension of disbelief because the perks are better on that side of the aisle.

A patsy she ain't.

GravatarWhen the indictments come down,
these discussions will be rendered
academic, IMHO.

GravatarKos has a very interesting conspiracy theory up about scooter's letter to judy.

i'm not into conspiracies, but surely one is occuring re: this plame affair. i don't know what the letter means, all kinds of crazy shit about entwined aspen roots and taking a fall. it really does sound like coded language.

GravatarSimels, it's not necessary for us to belabor the embarrassment I made of you last night. Not now that that thread's been restored. Now the proof is there for all to see at their own leisure.

GravatarWhat's the likely subject of the opening skit on SNL?

My money's on Bush's vacation during Katrina.

GravatarI have leftover lemon bars. And chopped chicken liver from today's Balducci's run. Help yourselves!
Hecate

Hmmm...

Did you find anymore of that grapefruit marmalade?

GravatarWhat's the likely subject of the opening skit on SNL?

Britney Spears' baby.

Or something not funny (that's your winner!).

.

GravatarChere, look for the uppercase on the comma and full stop keys. What do you see there, hein?
GWPDA

Just when I learn not to be intimidated by your great mind you come up with something like this and I am intimidated all over again.

Is there anything you don't know?

GravatarPlum, does your keyboard look like this one?

If so, try the key to the right of the left Shift key. On second thought, that keyboard doesn't show the double-sharp-brackets that you typed up there. Hmmm. What if you cut and paste the tags in Kent's sandbox (linked up there)?

GravatarAlthough it would help if the putative "Democrats" that do get media facetime would get on board, instead of sticking to the Republican-lite positions.
Nim

The reason they get facetime is because they're playing the song the corporate media wants to hear.

The ones playing our songs aren't get no facetime for that very reason.

Gravatarflory - Sorry I sounded a little strident there -- I didn't mean it to sound like I was directing that at you!

Bad posting technique on my part. Apologies!

Gravatar"Polite fictions" == that would be a good (understated) name for a book about the whole administration

Gravatarflory,

I did; not sure it's the same kind I had at the restaurant, but it's on it's way to GWPDA so she can check it out.

GravatarChere, look for the uppercase on the comma and full stop keys. What do you see there, hein?
GWPDA, yclept Irate Scholar

oh my god! i never noticed that before!

it's working, it's working! Thank you all!

GravatarJust what did Bolton say to Judy on those visits?

GravatarYou know, Toby, I just re-read you
stuff from last night, and you're
still a world class
liar as I remembered, but
there was one thing I missed
at the time in the heat of
the discussion--

That Stonewall remark.

I think it's so adorable that you
think I'm gay....

Gravatarso who is Judy protecting now?

Judy.
Hecate

That's always been my feeling, but I wonder if there might not be a bit of showbiz involved, too. Intrepid girl reporter as victim/heroine, imprisoned for being "proved fucking right". Break a leg, Judy...

GravatarAh, Silleigh, it appears that another of Haloscan's helpful mind-fucking bells and whistles is a feature that processes code that is being previewed and transforms it into tags.

Like Seinfeld's car rental company, which was good at taking the reservation but couldn't get the hang of making the reservation, I fear that you may have previewed but failed to check the view beneath the preview.

Not an exact analogy, to be sure, but I just happened to notice the code in the text-box transforming into tags after I punched "preview", even though the displayed preview looked OK.

Next Haloscan will pull a quarter out of your ear.

GravatarThe coersion thing is just that Miller wanted to be triply assured she wasn't going to be assassinated or railroaded for telling the truth. The coded letter she got gave her permission to tell the truth. "You can tell them what you "know"..." is a world apart from "we won't kill you if you tell the truth."

GravatarNevermind, looks like you got it, Plum.

GWPDA is intimidatingly fun.

GravatarPlum P, I see your problem.
Try this as a workaround. At least until you can find a keyboard that includes the relevant bracket keys.

Gravatar" Just what did Bolton say to Judy on those visits?
Prior Aelred | Email | Homepage | 10.01.05 - 6:40 pm | #
"

"Let's not waste our time talking, my sweet, we have to make the most of our 30 minutes..."

(sorry)

Gravatar[Libby] closed the letter [to Judy Miller] on this personal note (although he wasn't quite right on when autumn begins): "You went into jail in the summer. It is fall now. You will have stories to cover--Iraqi elections and suicide bombers, biological threats and the Iranian nuclear program. Out West, where you vacation, the aspens will already be turning. They turn in clusters, because their roots connect them. Come back to work---and life. Until then, you will remain in my thoughts and prayers."

It is really astongishingly (badly) poetic. It almost tempts us to recall our theory about the purpose of the Bremer Iraqi Flag: it fits too perfectly into various theories, it's a false confirmation.

Gravatar"Polite fictions" == that would be a good (understated) name for a book about the whole administration

In the same way, "A Minor Skirmish" would be a good name for a book about WWII.

GravatarSimels on Dr. Rice:

You know what? She works for an
anti-gay administartion.

If she is gay....on sober reflection,
she's a disgrace too and she forfeits
her privacy.

Out her if she is.

Liberals license themselves to say whatever they want about their opponents' sexuality because it serves their partisan purposes ---and the cowards who think like they do won't hold them accountable, anyway, because their liberal, pro-gay bona fides are solid enough. Uh... right?

GravatarNext Haloscan will pull a quarter out of your ear.

Li'l Bro, thanks for the 'splanation. Next, Haloscan can bite my shiny metal ass!

GravatarBad posting technique on my part. Apologies!
SteveNS

's ok.

My post was a little unclear on that point. Clarification is always good.

Gravatar"Let's not waste our time talking, my sweet, we have to make the most of our 30 minutes..."

I think he said, "Teeth! Watch the teeth!"

GravatarWhen was the last season when SNL was funny?

GravatarWhat I like is Scooter's list of stories that Judy is to start covering. Note the reference to Iranian nukes. Bush is SO planning to use nukes on Iran. Thanks, SCOTUS, you motherfucking slimy sons of dirty bitches.

GravatarAnybody have the slightest idea what
the little sociopath is talking
about just now?

Gravatar"She never wrote an article but she went to jail".
Blah blah blah. Over and over and over.

The answer is RIGHT THERE in the MSM's reflexive comment. She never wrote an article BECAUSE IN THIS INSTANCE SHE WAS ACTING AS AN AGENT OF LIBBYROVE and she went to jail BECAUSE FITZGERALD KNEW SHE WAS IN THE CONSPIRACY and was giving her a chance to flip on them or at least otherwise contribute to his case. What's his case? The judge granting the subpoenas said that Fitzgerald's case was about the plot to get back at Wilson.

GravatarJudith Miller paints herself as a martyr, but only the NYT believes it. When the "free" press divas collude with schemers to subvert the ideals of democracy, what they deserve is old fashioned tar and feathers, not a gilded pedestal.

GravatarHere's the Daily Kos diary about Scooter's letter being written in code.

Strange doings amici mio.

GravatarIs this the groundhog thread?

GravatarHmmm? Steve Simels is now denying that he's gay? Oh, okay.

GravatarHi, SteveNS! Eli is showing me New Pornographers videos.

GravataroooooOOOOkay...

Toby...

Please fuck off to somewhere else.

GravatarKos diarist theory

for some reason the comments didn't show up for me this time, which is where all the really interesting specualation is. at the very least, it is a weird letter.

"You went into jail in the summer. It is fall now. You will have stories to cover--Iraqi elections and suicide bombers, biological threats and the Iranian nuclear program. Out West, where you vacation, the aspens will already be turning. They turn in clusters, because their roots connect them. Come back to work---and life. or as one commenter put it, "watch out for horse heads in your bed judy."

Gravatarsmiels,

Gravatar...lemon bars. And chopped chicken liver...

Dumber than dirt.

Just astounding.

GravatarBut what i dont get with all this: is why Bolton would get involved by going to see her in prison. What is the link between the two. Bolton would have never gone to see her unless there's some political gain from the visit. The friendship thing is nonsence. Why did they send Bolton to see her?

GravatarEli is showing me New Pornographers videos.

Hi, NYMary -- suh-weeet!

Their videos are as fun as their tunes, which is saying something.

I'd have a hard time choosing a favourite.

GravatarI have no doubt it's code, but it really can't be decoded without certain knowledge that's probably just in the heads of Miller and a very few others. You'll note that the suggestions that arise are polar opposites...

GravatarProbably making fun of Kanye West.

Bingo.

Gravatar"Next Haloscan will pull a quarter out of your ear."

GravatarIs this the groundhog thread?
-
MisterX

No, this is Groundhog Day.

GravatarBut isn't the point that if someone gay is working for an administration that has anti gay policies that they deserve to be exposed as a hypocrit? That's certainly worse than pointing out the hypocrisy.

If someone in the decision making level of the Nazi party had belonged to one of the groups being persecuted by the Nazis wouldn't it have been a good idea to expose them? You might warn them that you were going to do it but it would at least have the effect of preventing them from working for the Nazis.

Gravatar"watch out for horse heads in your bed judy."

That makes the least sense of all. Judy is an enthusiastic, converted, willing volunteer whose involvement probably extends past messenger service, especially since she didn't run with the story. The tone, while deeply strange, is unmistakably friendly. It's a little too friendly. How many non-romantically-involved het men use phrases like that in talking to women?

GravatarOn sober reflection, "All For Swinging You Around" is hard to top.

Love those cute girls jumping on their beds in slo-mo...

Gravatarit's a false confirmation

It's a false flag.

Which reminds me, Anne Carson has a new book out.

GravatarI think it's so adorable that you

steve simels

I sure as hell don't.

GravatarWhy did they send Bolton to see her?

flory, Business Manager

I don't buy the vast right wing media conspiracy theory. The corporate media is going to have a natural administration bias because most of them are stupid and lazy, and it's easier to relay what their sources tell them than to practice journalism, and it's too risky to jeopardize the "access" gravy train by questioning the party line. But apart from an occasional fund-raising letter, what are the congressional Dems doing to publicize their ideas? Running issue ads? Doing the talk show circuit and actually talking about issues rather than GOP-bashing? Reaching out to the anti-war movement? Naah--too much work, and too likely to expose their own complicity in the ongoing financial train wreck that is this Congress.

The three "issues" at the top of the DNC web site are "Republican leader Tom DeLay indicted," "Frist stock sale under investigation," and "Democrats fight for Independent Katrina Commision." And of the other 20 items on the page, only one, a Katrina relief plan, appears to be a plan or a strategy, as opposed to self-congratulatory feel-good pap, or DeLay and Bush bashing. I don't know if it's just a bad web site, or if it is symptomatic of a wider problem, but based on how good a job the Dems are doing at getting all their plans publicized in the press, I'm guessing it's the latter.

GravatarNot such a pull for me, obviously--unlike simels, I'm not a lesbian. But a great song and a fun video, no doubt.

I'm convinced that her grandstanding was a ploy to try and get out of testifying about her own involvement in the scandal, not as a reporter, but as a full fledged player. As the primary conduit to the MSM for their bogus WMD stories, Miller was this administration's unofficial secretary of propaganda.
The garbage that she was reporting about Iraq was exactly the sort of thing that Joe Wilson was trying to tear down. As such, she had as much of a motive for wanting to damage Wilson as anyone else.

GravatarNonono. I need to look at your gravatar when it deigns to appear.

It's not the First Amendment; it's the Fifth.

GravatarYup, I'm off now too for some nice red wine.

Basically the Aspens are on the family share plan. Course th woods won't be the same once they start playing around with Ring Tones.

What's that old line about a rolling donut...?

GravatarThe three "issues" at the top of the DNC web site are "Republican leader Tom DeLay indicted," "Frist stock sale under investigation," and "Democrats fight for Independent Katrina Commision." And of the other 20 items on the page, only one, a Katrina relief plan, appears to be a plan or a strategy, as opposed to self-congratulatory feel-good pap

The DNC is not a policy making body -- its a fundraising arm, pure and simple.

If you want policy -- go to the people who make policy. The minority leaders of the various committees concerned. They all have plans.

And in order to get their plans on the babblefests -- they have to be invited. Which they're not. Because what they have to say isn't what the mediabots want to hear.

Biden and Joementum are the public faces of the Democratic party for a reason. The GOP and the corporate media like it that way.

Gravatari'm not into conspiracies, but surely one is occuring re: this plame affair. i don't know what the letter means, all kinds of crazy shit about entwined aspen roots and taking a fall. it really does sound like coded language.

I have to wonder myself. Normally I'd think the idea was cracked, but it's such a bizarrely *unprofessional* letter. And the neocons and associates historically love bizarre spy shit and symbolism -- cakes shaped like keys etc.

GravatarLooking forward to Rahm Emmanuel debating the RNC puke tomorrow.

Yep. Probably won't show up all the time; mine goes in and out for me, too.

GravatarIt is entirely too true that the Dems are an army of Liebermen, but it is also true that the media is undeniably predisposed to the right when analyzed properly. See FAIR at homepage. There are only so many times you can see statistics on experts on PBS programs overwhelmingly embracing the establishment, with "center" filling in for "left."

GravatarWe cannot accept this Jon Stewart Sensible Liberal Porn bullshit about how the media, while obviously rightist, is merely lazy; and we cannot understand how anyone who lived through the strenuous lengths this media went to in the Clinton administration to prove this very point could think otherwise.

GravatarOf course, there is the larger polite fiction that when Bush said he wanted to get to the bottom of this that this needed to be "investigated" -- that is, that if he really wanted to get to the bottom of the matter he couldn't find out within the hour by demanding that everyone on his staff telll him what happened (assuming that he didn't already know).

That is, the investigation was allowed to proceed with little media emphasis on the undeniable fact that somebody was guilty, and it was just a matter of determining who.

And the SCLM never did want to say anything that might puncture this polite fiction.

Gravatarflory,
steve's out, so I can show you this.

GravatarThe Miller Affair is as stinky as it gets, in the tradition of the Alger Hiss case and Watergate and Iran-Contra.

The media fixated on small potatoes like blowjobs and suspect land deals and futures trading, and before that on things like Dukakis looking silly in that tank and not standing foursquare for spousal revenge in the case of wife-rape and so forth.

Meanwhile the fertile GOP plutoscape brought forth mighty trees of entangled iniquity, vast thorned redwoods and sequoias and Tasmanian giants of collusion and avarice and mendacity and raw brutal powermongering-- vaporous groves of evil that scarcely attract the Fourth Estate's interest.

Miller and her cohorts are luminous as foxfire on a rotten log with corruption and deceit. The Bolton visit(s) alone reek of impropriety, and beg explanation.

However, I expect that the kabuki dance-- or dog-and-pony show, if you prefer-- will prevail. The bobbleheads and pundits will blather on with their usual one-two punch of facile ignorance or purposeful misdirection, and some dumbed-down, tarted-up version of the significance of it all will be ladled like farina into the bowls of Amerikan TV, to be carelessly devoured or pushed aside in favor of Cheetos.

Unless and until Fitzgerald throws down some trumps.

GravatarThe thing the NeoCons got out of Strauss was the romantic mythos of the enlightened minority keeping their genius out of sight of the rude mob through deception, coming from Plato and Maimonides. Codes would be entirely up their alley.

GravatarI thought Simels was gay. The guy's constantly asking me to blow him, so what am I supposed to think?

GravatarIf you want policy -- go to the people who make policy. The minority leaders of the various committees concerned. They all have plans.

Thing is part of the GOP's success is that they have a unified, simple message: Small government, low taxes, the market knows best.

The Dems don't. Of course part of that is because reality is complicated and much more is needed than simplistic idea-ettes. But they need to effectively counter the GOP tag lines.

GravatarDoes Miller have an eidetic memory? Anyone ever heard? Bolton may have delivered her the "key" for the letter from Scoots. Or, maybe he brought her a real book, and the key to finding the words/phrases. Damn, where's Robert Ludlum when you need him?

GravatarI think I missed a chance at history today, btw. I was driving out of the parking garage at a shopping center in Towson when I drove by a woman who, if not Ann Coulter, was her missing twin sister... right down to the anorexia and prominent adam's apple. She looked like a Stepford Wife wearing a ball cap, and was loading up her giant black SUV. Same hairdo, everything.

If I didn't have a line of cars behind me I woulda jumped out and confirmed it, but I'm pretty sure it was her. Been kicking myself all day for not making the most of the opportunity.

GravatarThing is part of the GOP's success is that they have a unified, simple message: Small government, low taxes, the market knows best.

The Dems don't.

I agree 100% the Dems need to do a better job streamlining their policies and framing them into an easily digestible message.

But it irks me no end to hear good progressives -- especially at a place like this where the habitues are more informed than most -- repeating the GOP talking point that the Dems have no policies.

GravatarI read the Libby thing and I can't help it- I hear a Harvey Korman voiceover and I see Carol Burnett playing Judy in a cell reading it and it's just like one of those over-the-top old movie skits she used to do on her show.

Organized crime in Washington
It appears to have been a rough week for the Republican Party, with DeLay's indictment, Miller talking, Larry Franklin's plea bargain, the forcing of the release of the worst of the Abu Ghraib photos, more revelations on the Abramoff and Safavian scandals, continued fallout from the debacle of the non-response to Katrina, more problems in Iraq, and on and on. People are starting to notice a pattern. From Sam Smith:

"WITH the indictment of Tom DeLay there can no longer be any doubt that with the Bush regime we are observing not a variation on politics but chronically criminal and corrupt behavior parading as ideology. This is not a movement but a mob and a disservice as much to conservatives as to progressives and moderates. The whole purpose of the Bush machine is to line its own pockets, increase its own power, and suppress any who would complain about it. For the media to treat what is happening as just another political discussion merely makes it a tool of the biggest fraud ever perpetrated on the American public. It is time the press learned to distinguish clearly between a con and a concept."

and Josh Marshall (there are links in the original text):
"On paper, Jack Abramoff was a lobbyist. And he made a great deal of money for himself. But if you think of Jack Abramoff as just a crooked lobbyist most of the facts coming out about what he did don't make a great deal of sense. He was a key player in a very big political machine and he was managing a slush fund.

Look at the pattern.

Notice how all Abramoff's clients seemed to get 'bilked' out of large sums of money that ended up going to other conservative foundations, consulting firms, Ralph Reed, lobby shops, Grover Norquist, astroturf organizers, politicians, etc.? All of them part of Washington's Republican infrastructure?

In the case of Abramoff's work for Flanigan and Tyco, Abramoff ended up sending the greater part of their $2 million lobbying fee to an astroturf outfit called Grassroots Interactive - an outfit allegedly controlled by Abramoff and run by a guy who now works as the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor of Maryland.

The money ended up diverted to other purposes beside the honorable task of whipping up populist enthusiasm on behalf of corporations that relocate to PO boxes in Bermuda to avoid paying taxes. Tyco lawyer George Terwilliger claims the firm 'was a victim of a rip-off.'

So is that it? Another rip-off? Another corporation which hires a lawyer out of the White House only to get taken in by Jack Abramoff's wiles? Please. How many times can one operator pull off the same stunt? How many times do big chunks of these pay days get passed on to other operators and organizations without the operators and organizations getting wise to the game?
These odd diversions aren't the exception but the rule.

The Republican machine built by DeLay, Norquist, Abramoff, et al. and pulled into

I read this, but I hear Arthur's voice....

GravatarForgive me if we've discussed this...

Some of Miller's colleagues at the Times, who declined to be identified because they are challenging their bosses' stance, say much of the staff is frustrated and confused.

"People are angry," one staffer said. "Was this a charade on her part for martyrdom, or a real principle? She wanted to resurrect herself from the WMD thing," the staffer said, a reference to Miller stories about Iraq possessing weapons of mass destruction that turned out to be wrong.

"I am truly depressed," another staffer said. "It absolutely makes no sense. Basically she did the same thing Matt Cooper did, with the intervening weeks in jail. But I just don't buy that she's doing it for her own image enhancement."

Gravatarsteve's been a rock writer for a good thirty years

Yeah, I knew he'd been a rock critic since Jesus was a corporal. I just didn't realize his collected wisdom had reached collectible status.

GravatarAs I explained before, Judy knows her testimony will be the one that finally sends a few of the most valuable insiders up the river. She probably doesn't even know if she can lie and get away with it, or will end up in the slammer herself for perjury. She's been the moll of this ruthless mob for some time. The NYT Times also feels she has been a very valuable asset to them, an actual insider into the fascist regime on their staff that gives them some inside stories and advance lies. So she is VERY sorry that she will be the unwilling witness that sends one or two of the capos up. She is so sorry that she offered to go to prison for a while as an act of contrition. But the administration knows (through some of the visitors to the jail who evaluated her) that she won't hold out forever so they told Scooter to symbolicaly throw in the towel for them and say go ahead and do what you have to do with the grand jury.

After she sings, one of two things will happen. Bolton and Andy Card will invite her out on the lake to "go fishing" with them and she won't come back, or one evening three years from now she'll be cooking up sausages alone in her summer cottage in Montauk and someone will quitely come in through a screen door behind her and settle the account with three quick ones behind the ear.

Nuttin personal, it's just business.

I didn't even get half way through my popcorn.

GravatarBy the way, has anyone yet floated the theory that the administration wanted to make sure Judy Miller was around to write about Iran's deadly WMD program-related activities?

GravatarArthur really, really likes pate. Almost as much as Mr. Plushy. As much nearly, as I do.

Where to plant the dill. I take as my model a neighbor. Her house faced east. Somehow, along the grass strip along the driveway, dill got started - oceans of dill, six feet high, dill WEED. She did nothing to it. Her dirt was poor. It got just about 8 hours or more of sun. I have a place just exactly like that, on the front of my house. Last year, I tried it in the same facing area in the back of the house and then I ignored it. It grew nicely. Dill is a perennial. I think the spot I have in mind in the -front- will not be disrupted by anything and can just sit there and self-propagate. The key is the number of sun hours it gets and the badness of the soil.

Now. About the yellow crookneck squash....

GravatarSo plant it in the flowerbed...

GravatarGI and RotG both romanticize the upper clases (the introduction to GI has Renoir wishing for the days of gentlemen and chivalry when it was outdated chivalry that inspired massive charges on machine gun positions), and the scariest part is, they're done so damn well that any other bit of class warfare propaganda can only be said to be a vastly inferior attempt at what they did. It is a remaining-humanity test for the commie. It's bourgeois decadence, and it's still beautiful, so if both can be admitted to then the beetle hears the violin so to speak.

In particular we get stuck on the Russian book-burners: book-burning was identified in Europe with the Inquisition (long before the Nazis) as a kind of insane willful barbarism. But isn't it a great socialistic act of protest that the hungry, freezing Russians burn the things in their rage? The treatises on geometry are far more useful keeping away frostbite. The fact that Renoir let that through, of course allowing the other side a voice, is proof that something more than unusually talented propaganda is at work here. Similarly in RotG we are always able to sympathize totally with the pathetically manly cuckolded huntmaster.

GravatarBut, not in Scotty P's case. He needs to be gutted.

GravatarNYMary, thanks for noticing our older complaint about the King quote. Going past googling, we find that there is more reason to trust "anywhere," besides the obvious fact that "everywhere" is tautological, inferior and unlikely.

This administration is the epitomy of thanking the various gangsters that helped proped them up. Bush is giving his pals the reach around in the most blatent of ways.

Why isn't there any kind of outrage anymore? People don't care about cronyism. They think that it's part and parcel of American politics (and righfully so). They are so fucking snowed; it pitiful.

This Junta (and I'm not trying to use hyperbole) is using hit and run tacicts. Once they've planted the various stink bombs (Roberts, Bolton, etc.), they'll get out of the way.

That's what kids do. They're just a bunch of fucking 12 year olds.

GravatarOh, hello everybody.

I see Atrios got blogger fixed.

Gravataryou lost me at 'cold scrambled eggs'. The only eggs I want cold are hard boiled, preferably deviled.

I picked up the habit in a small, Danish restaurant in Westwood. Wonderful open face sammitches - often on anise bread, with a thin layer of sweet butter, flawless cold scrambled eggs, a dab of chutney, a few boiled shrimp. Or an eel. Whatever. It's very nice. Try the smelt.

GravatarCan't wait for the indictments later this month.

I hope they're worth waiting for. As far as I'm concerned, if Rove (or Bush or Cheney, but that's not bloody likely) isn't one of them, it's a complete waste of time.

I haven't seen it on Orincus yet, only on this blog.

It's an awful story.

SOUTH GEORGIA: ATTACKS ON IMMIGRANTS KILL 5 Five men were killed and at least six people were critically wounded in attacks in trailer parks outside Tifton, the authorities said. Two suspects were sought. Some victims, all of them Mexicans, were beaten with an aluminum bat found at one site, and at least one was shot, Sheriff Al Whittington of Colquitt County said. (AP)

GravatarThe DNC is not a policy making body -- its a fundraising arm, pure and simple.

If you want policy -- go to the people who make policy. The minority leaders of the various committees concerned. They all have plans.

flory, Business Manager

You know that, and I know that, and we both know what doors to pry open when we want to get the details. But the web site anyone inclined to be curious about Democratic "plans" might go to--the one that comes up in Google when you search on "democratic party"--www.democrats.org--appears to focus entirely on the shortcomings of the GOP rather than any strengths of the Dems. I think that's significant and symptomatic of a party woefully lacking a strategy for communicating a unified message.

By calling the SCLM stupid and lazy, I by no means intended to imply that they aren't also biased--they're owned by big corporations run by rich guys, and big corporations and rich guys are usually pro-GOP. Yet I don't think I've ever heard a major Dem officeholder complain that a major media outlet refused to report their position or take their phone calls. I read quotes from high-ranking Dems in every day's NYT and hear them on every day's evening news. There may be a bias, but there's not a gag order. It's insufficient and unproductive to blame the media for the Dems' apparent lack of any coordinated strategy to bring attention to their important plans.

Based on the 5-minute speeches and such from Dems late at night on CSPAN when no one is watching, there are no shortage of Dems with good ideas. The Congressional Black Caucus and the Thirtysomething Dems and the like seem to have accurately assessed the political climate and the big problems. Now we need some leadership at the party level (and no, Joementum doesn't count) who can get enough Dems to agree on single solutions to specific issues that we can put together a message that the average TV viewer will understand. The average voter isn't as dumb as a lot of people think they are--but they aren't willing to do hours of research and analysis to uncover the positions the Democratic party. It's got to be out there in their face all the time, like the Contract with America, which may have been disingenuous and ill-advised, but which at least made the papers.

I understand Pam was ready to get up and walk out of there, she was so embarrassed!

GravatarThere's a bigger USA Today article.

Sounds like a hate crime.

The dead were all Mexican immigrants. All lived in mobile homes in Tift County and neighboring Colquitt County, rural areas where migrant workers toil on cotton and peanut farms. Some of the victims were beaten with an aluminum baseball bat found at one of the scenes, and at least one victim was shot, police said.

Two suspects were being sought. Investigators believe the killers targeted Hispanic immigrants in the string of overnight robberies about 180 miles south of Atlanta.

GravatarMight be. But it might also be racially motivated.

Gravatar"If Bush says "play along or I fire you" to people on his staff,..."

That would mean that W has both balls and brains enough to make a statement like that. I believe he has already proven his lack of both, so I don't seem him the source of such a threat or ultimatum. Herr Rove now, that's another story.

Because I have come to this late this evening, can anyone explain why or by whom this 'love letter' and apparently other Judy letters are suddenly now public?

Please excuse my suspicious nature, but I tend to always question that which occurs suddenly and without clarity of purpose.

GravatarEveryone looks good. Judy, Judy, Judy looks good; Fitzgerald looks good; Rove looks good, even Libby.

But...but...

CHENEY'S THE ONE!

But because of Fitzgerald's agreement with Judy, Judy, Judy, it means we'll never know.

Fucking Crime Syndicate in the White House. That's what it is.

GravatarAnother polite thing we are supposed to believe is that reporters are legally bound to honor their commitments. They are not, of course. While they may not be able to gather backround info in the future, they have legal obligation to withold their current source(s).

Gravatar/amen

GravatarLook, Atrios, I think you've got it all wrong. It is coercive to demand that a person confess or lose a cushy goverment job carrying enormous perquisites, not to mention the sheer power.

The odd aspect of this story is the sudden pretense that just because the person subject to coercion says, "Really. Honest. I'm doing this of my own free will," that his waiver is not in fact coerced. If there is true coercion, that is just what you'd expect him to say; and saying it doesn't negate the existence of the coercion.

So. I think Matt Cooper engaged in the intellectually ridiculous fiction that a source's statement that there was no coercion could be taken at face value because, for good personal reaons including his obligations to his family, he was just not willing to go to jail. (And I think his source was taken aback at his turn.)

But what about Judy? There's the question. She was willing to go to jail. Did she just suddenly get sick of prison food? I would guess that's it, but who knows? And if that's all it was, why didn't she come around sooner (or hadn't she bargained for yet another year or two of that food)? Or did some compromise Fitzgerald made (e.g., no testimony in certain areas) suddenly make testifying possible for her?

There's many a question that's not answered yet, and maybe never will be.

GravatarThe reason it couldn't happen until now: Libby just found out about these things called telephones, that allow you to communicate with someone from very long distances via an electrical current. Originally invented by Alexander Graham Bell (although there is some debate about this), these devices may one day revolutionize communications, if a method of providing cheap availability to the masses is found.
