At this point, I am wondering what the administration's response to this will be. If experience is any indicator, they will come out with a comment sometime Tuesday, offer them a couple of hundred in aid on Wednesday, offer to send thousands of American troops to the area and then wonder why the world hates us on Thursday, and pass legislation with huge giveaways to corporations on Friday, as part of an "aid" and "security" package to the region.

Sallyh-yes, it is time to shout it out. Loud and long.
But does anyone hear if we don't get MSM coverage?
A trickle if information, yes. Word of mouth.
We can say X isn't/is true, cite source to a few listeners, acquaintances. But I remember when I would hear someone tell me some little publicized fact, and I would think, well, when the NYTimes covers it I'll believe it.
(That was long ago and so inapplicable today; did I mention the American guy I met who married an Aussie, has been in Australia 5 years, came to visit son and cannot believe the state of the NYTimes. He asked how long it's been this bad. Wow.)
I still do wonder how so many Americans did vote for Kerry given the horrible MSM coverage of the election and BushCo's actions. With people so busy, how do they get to the truth? It was terrible being without my PC and internet access for those two weeks.

Take a cup of rolled oats and buzz in a blender 'til its fine as cornstarch
Now sift it with 3/4 cup cocoa powder
1 cup flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
Now in a big bowl pour a can of eagle brand and stir in a package of toll house chips; microwave, stirring, until chips melt. Add a can of evaporated milk and a 8-serving package of chocolate pudding mix
Beat in 3 eggs and the flour mixture, plus 1/2 cup toasted nuts.
Turn into a buttered, floured 9x13 pan. Bake 30-35 minutes. It won't 'set' in the middle so don't overcook it.

NTodd--you can't be older than my sister...she was getting Ritalin as an 8 YO in 1970. She hated taking it, said she could definitely feel it doping her up.
I should clarify: it was before the big movement to put PITA children on the drug. My folks certainly wouldn't have agreed to put me on it, anyway. Just sometimes during hay fever season, they really appreciated benadryl's side effects!

What's so stunning about the Rethugs is that so soon after Katrina, so soon after so many people saw what derelection of governmental duty can do, they go ahead and crap on the American people in general and the victims of the hurricane in particular.
The environment, the unbid contracts, the work going to almost anyone except Gulf Coast people who desperately need it, the prolonged voting time and twisting arms in daylight, this slap at the people of LA, AL, MS.
Do they think people won't notice?
Or, is it just grab what they can while they can, that they fear losing power in the next election so much that they're willing to show their evil, greedy hand to everyone?
Toons--thus far, the correlation between thimerisol and autism is weak; we simply don't have enough data. But thimerisol is highly irritating to some children; hence, it's been removed.

Thimerosol contains mercury. In my business, we've used it for many years as a preservative (antimicrobial). Since it contains mercury, we've removed it from most all products.

Oh, I do know your anger, but, and it's a big but, you can't defeat something with nothing. I feel we must do what we can to get the Dems back to STANDING FOR the things we believe are important.
Maybe the Greens need to run candidates as Green Democrats in primaries, or something like that. Get inside the Dem Party and work for reinfusing the party with progressive, liberal ideas.

Nope. As an Indy, my vote will never be beholden to ANY party, Green, Dem, GOP, Prog, Lib, or otherwise. But if you're going to come in here all smug about not voting Dem, I'm going to tell you to shit or get off the pot.
The Greens have made more headway over the last few years than any other party.
Good for them. Hopefully they'll continue that trend. Go help them become a positive, constructive party rather than a group of whiners (at the national level) whose platform is "the Dems suck almost as bad as the GOP!"
I vote Green locally sometimes, though we have a strong Progressive party here in the Vermont so I usually go with their candidates instead. In fact, I'm hopeful that Dave Z, the organic farmer we get our produce from in the summer (a Prog currently in our House), will win Bernie's seat, and that Bernie (that flaming commie) will take Jim's vacated place in the Senate.
So, best of luck to you. Gotta work on the marketing though: I've learned that "buy it, asshole" doesn't sell a plot of product.

Sallyh,
it's the healthy version of my son's brownie recipe. He makes it with a double-batch bag of brownie mix instead of the oatmeal and frosts it with chocolate fudge icing.
I have been known to make it this way:
3/4 tablespoon coffee extract
1 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 package sour cream fudge cake mix
1 package devil's food cake mix
1/4 cup cocoa powder
12-oz Special Dark Hershey bars, melted
1 8-serving package chocolate fudge pudding mix (NOT the instant kind, it gets bitter in the oven)
1 bag semisweet chocolate chips melted into 1 can eagle brand milk (aka 'cheater's fudge')
3 beaten eggs
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/3 cup each toasted chopped almonds, walnuts and pecans
This bakes as Add 3/4 cup Dutch cocoa powder
1/2 cup twice-sifted flour
1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon good vanilla
1 can sweetened condensed milk
3 beaten eggs
1/2 stick softened butter NOT oleo
1 package chocolate fudge pudding
1 package semisweet chocolate chips,
melted with 1 can evaporated milk and 1 tablespoon real butter
1/4 cup each toasted walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds (pecans if you prefer)
Bake as before (makes two pans).
Cut in 3-inch bars. Frost thusly:
Beat an 8-oz package of light cream cheese with 2 lbs of confectioners' sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla until fluffy. Spread over bars.
Drizzle with caramel syrup
Caramel syrup: Simmer a can of Eagle Brand in a heavy pan until it's reduced by 2/3 in volume
Now, these are for very rare occasions.
They can give you a chocolate fix.

There's a store called "French Connection U.K." and they had "F.C.U.K." emblazoned on all their windows (not to mention the requisite logo tee-shirts). Hated that.
Then, saw this goth chick with a very elaborate tattoo all over the back of her neck on the street. The back of her tee shirt said, "Yes, it's real. Yes, it hurt. Yes, I'll still like it when I'm 40. Fuck off."

I would, however, not be offended if someone were to object, and make every effort to limit such displays to venues in which they are more likely to be "appreciated."

Not me -- give me the heat, any day. Cloudy here, too... depressing.
.
The plain truth is Mother Nature doesn't care one way or the other. The rains fall heavily and the mud slides. Tectonic plates reach a point of stress and then snap. Air and water heat up and hurricanes blow. There's a certain perverse comfort in knowing that nature is not malicious, just indifferent. What matters is how we respond as human beings to the misfortune of our fellows.

Letter shows Cheney aide was prodded in leak probe
But Libby offered a new waiver that Miller accepted after he received a September 12 letter in which the prosecutor, investigating a possible White House role in the leak, repeatedly encouraged him to do just that.
"I would welcome such a communication reaffirming Mr. Libby's waiver," prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald told Libby's lawyer, Joseph Tate.
"It would be viewed as cooperation with the investigation," Fitzgerald said.
Some lawyers in the case called the letter a thinly veiled threat seeking Libby's cooperation, and said it raised questions about whether Libby's waiver was as voluntary as Miller and her lawyers had described. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/

My current fave is the "Impeach Bush" shirt I bought for the DC rally, but a friend of mine picked one up that I really like; it has Shrub with one of his monkey-face expressions in the middle, the top says, "Intelligent Design" and the bottom says, "I think not."

Yep. Thomas Hardy got it right:
If but some vengeful god would call to me
From up the sky, and laugh: “Thou suffering thing,
Know that thy sorrow is my ecstasy,
That thy love’s loss is my hate’s profiting!”
Then would I bear, and clench myself, and die,
Steeled by the sense of ire unmerited;
Half-eased, too, that a Powerfuller than I
Had willed and meted me the tears I shed.
But not so. How arrives it joy lies slain,
And why unblooms the best hope ever sown?
--Crass Casualty obstructs the sun and rain,
And dicing Time for gladness casts a moan….
These purblind Doomsters had as readily strown
Blisses about my pilgrimage as pain.

It's strangely warm here in Halifax, although raining (of course). We still haven't had our first frost, and so my tomatoes actually ripened on the vine-- harvested most of them yesterday. Might even get some peppers. And there's no frost in the forecast over the next week, either. Weird. This time last year it was below freezing at night.

In Massachusetts we have 8 months of winter followed by 2 months of wretched, cold rainy spring, and plunging into 2 months of hot, humid, mosquito summer and then back to 8 months of winter.

I'm kinda with Tena on the T-shirt thing. Part of the problem is we are forgetting that certain behaviors are not proper for all venues. While saying "fuck" is perfectly okay here, it is not particularly warranted on clothing while you are going traveling. Maybe to a rock concert.
