Erm....cuz Halliburton was worried about their second quarter results?

GravatarOh, that's right, then we would have known for sure Saddam no longer had WMD...

Gravatar And another thing--remind me again why we couldn't wait for the UN weapons inspectors to complete their job?

They might have found the absence of WMDs.

http://blog.thedemocraticdaily.c...ily.com/? p=1127

GravatarSenator Rockefeller's comments the day (July 9, 2004) the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence released its reports tell the story:

And I have to say, that there is a real frustration over what is not in this report, and I don't think was mentioned in Chairman Roberts' statement, and that is about the -- after the analysts and the intelligence community produced an intelligence product, how is it then shaped or used or misused by the policy-makers?… So again there's genuine frustration -- and Chairman Roberts and I have discussed this many times -- that virtually everything that has to do with the administration has been relegated to phase two. My hope is that we will get this done as soon as possible."

GravatarMr. Rehnquist,

You have poor taste in music.

Are you all about the HMS Pinafor??

Gravatar Eli and flory--You get extra credit points!

And a gold star?

GravatarSilberman was very clear that his Commission did NOT look into the issue of whether the Bush White House manipulated intelligence information:

"Well, on the [that] point, we duck. That is not part of our charter. We did not express any views on policymakers' use of intelligence -- whether Congress or the president. It wasn't part of our charter and indeed most of us didn't want to get into that issue because it's basically a political question and everybody knows -- you can look at the newspaper and see what people said and make your own judgment."

Gravatar"They might have found the absence of WMDs.
Eli "

But...but...Iraq is as big as CALIFORNIA...the asbsence of evidence doesn't imply the evidence of absence...

Gravatar"Pfft. It was a gimme."

Gravatarit's crap. crapcrapcrapcrap.

do you honestly believe, that with all the $, access, power and opportunity to info-whore that they have, that our reps and their staff "don't know what's going on" with a PDF or other top down brief? buuuuuuulshit.

they knew saddam had no wmds. they knew this war was about upping bush's sinking popularity. they knew and don't care that american soldiers would die to defend halliburton's right to rape taxpayers for "profit" (read: theft). they knew.

jeebus krist, i'll say this: if there is a congressional or senate dem who relies upon PDBs hand me downs and CNN for info about the world, they're too stupid to live. who am i? no one. i knew the "facts" about these issues long ago. it's called research, and if you're a DC intern, you do it for your boss. or you get fired.

no, interns and bosses alike, "they knew." it was, is, and always was BULLSHIT. crap. rhetoric. a game. wool over amurkins' eyes. for halliburton. to advance the career of dem pol A to committee B, etc. but "serious?" no. nononononono.

let's not play this game. let's call a spade a spade. a liar a liar, a fraud a fruad. did this war have to happen, did it save any lives, better protect america, stabilize the region, take out a gathering threat, or bring PITME? fuck no.

you know what it did, and continues to do. $ for warmongers. plain and simple. say thank you as you write that tax check, KBR sure will. in the end, "No one" (read: rich white people) cares about a few firebombed, flesh-burnt-off brown people and towelheads. compassion is for suckers, loser. wake up and smell the profit.

GravatarWhat intelligence contained in the 2001 statement of policy entitled "Fuck Saddam, we're taking him out" did the American people have difficulty understanding?

EYES WIDE SHUT!

GravatarOnly days after a bludgeoning behind closed doors in the Senate, Republican Senator Pat Roberts is insisting that there is no evidence of "political manipulation or pressure" in the use of pre-war intelligence.

Unfortunately for Roberts, a growing mountain of evidence suggests otherwise...

For the full story, see:

"Roberts' Iraq Stonewall Crumbles."

Gravatarflory--gold stars and smiley faces

GravatarGeezus freekin' gapers, folks.

We've got ample evidence of all these folks jazzing their way to war.

GravatarToday is apparently Bush-is-a-big-liar day in the media.

He's jumped the shark. And the media is like the little kids who take turns to stick the boot in once the bully's on the floor.

GravatarThey're just a pack of liars. This administration is headed for utter historical disgrace. They must know it. How can they even continue?

Gravatar Did Fredo reference Kerry today in one of his blatherings? And when he did so, did he call Kerry "My opponent?"

He was referring to the context of the 2004 election. No word-usage foul there.

GravatarJohn Kerry Responds to George Bush’s Veterans Day Political Attacks

Americans will not forget, and neither will those of us who defend our country by asking tough questions and demanding a new course in Iraq.

Just out of curiousity Senator -- where the hell were all those tough questions in February of 2003?

I'm glad you've found your spine, but I really wish you'd polished the damn thing up when it would've done some good.

GravatarBob Beckel -- yes, Bob Beckel --

GravatarThat speech?

Waaaaaaaah preznit. A petty little man, standing in front of people in uniform. None of whom look that delighted to be there.

This fucker needs to be impeached. And if not, he had better not leave the country after he leaves office, because the moment he sets foot in another country, he'll be hauled off to the Hague.

I despise him.

olberman beat the crap outta him, and this column is so-so. did anyone see how the networks reported it?

Gravatar Mr. Rehnquist,

You have poor taste in music.

Are you all about the HMS Pinafor??

Pardon me? I enjoy the "new music" the kids are into these days. I like the Air Supply and that Leo Sayer character. I must admit, however, that the "Captain and Tennille" or whatever they are called and many of the other Negro "acid rock" acts are too rough for my tastes.

Gravatarthe NIE view that Hussein would not use weapons of mass destruction against the United States or turn them over to terrorists unless backed into a corner was cleared for public use only a day before the Senate vote.
It wasn't cleared for the mainstream media for 2 years.

GravatarThe most consistently enjoyable hour on television.

GravatarPerhaps the point about Bush's reference to "my opponent" is more evidence that he recycled almost verbatim a July 2004 campaign speech.

GravatarTrue, but it reminded us that he wouldn't call Kerry by name in 2004.
pseudonymous in nc

Well, it is pretty hard to pronounce...

GravatarEven though Bush may have finally forces Hussein's hand and let the UN INspectors in, it was clear a month from our invasion there were no WMD's.

Bush clearly ginned the information he gave to the Senate. Hell, Powell ginned the information he presented live to the UN.

Even though the Seante allowed Bush to use force IF IT WAS NECCESSARY (and the Senate all have much to answer for all the way around for abdacating their greatest power), it was clear that invading Iraq and tearing the place to bits was UNNECCESSARY.

Bush, Rumsfeld and Cheney did that on his own and they should be brought before a woalrd court on charges for invading a non-threatening, sovereign power.

GravatarOh, for pity's sake!

Since when has any congresscritter had access to the same intel that the POTUS recieves in his daily briefings? Hmm?

All we need to do is hammer on that one little fact.

Bush lied, people died.

GravatarSo when 80% of the public disapproves of Bush and believes he lied us in to war and think we should get out, will anything change? They hold the reins of power and nothing, nothing will stop them unless the Dems retake Congress in 06. And even then, we won't be leaving Iraq.

GravatarThis was supposed to be Bush's comeback speech? The one where he was supposed to attack Democrats and cut the momentum?

I honestly don't think they knew either way in late 2002. There were things that they did know, such as Hussein Kemal's interview with the UN saying that everything substantial got dumped in the early 90s. They pretty much knew nothing new was around once the inspectors went back in.

They just didn't care.

GravatarMeanwhile in other news..

Howard Dean is a Miserable Failure as DNC Chairman.

The Democratic National Committee under Howard Dean is losing the fundraising race against Republicans by nearly 2 to 1

(..)

From January through September, the Republican National Committee raised $81.5 million, with $34 million remaining in the bank. The Democratic National Committee, by contrast, showed $42 million raised and $6.8 million in the bank.

(..)

In the previous election cycle, the DNC had raised $31 million, compared with the RNC's $80 million at this point in 2003. But the cash-on-hand disparity -- the main concern of party strategists -- was less daunting then, with the RNC sitting on $27 million to nearly $10 million for the DNC.

Bwahahahahaha!

Gravatarwell, they, (and i mean the repukes) did it for politics, but they dig war anyway. it would have been certain death for any dem. to have voted against the resolution.

of course there is the larger issue of the national psyche which i think hunter
covers well.

"We have become a Nazi monster in the eyes of the whole world -- a nation of bullies and bastards who would rather kill than live peacefully. We are not just Whores for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts. We are human scum, and that is how history will judge us. No redeeming social value. Just whores. Gravatari'm with chi dyke. the congressional dems knew they were being played. absolutely knew it. fuck, we knew it; how could they not know it?

i'm not sure their reason for going along with it was their desire pump the bellows of the great war machine - i think they were concerned with the midterm elections. but whatever, who cares, they knew.

GravatarQuoting King Leopold would be fantastic. But surely even in the right wing vanity press someone would "get it" before it reached print?

GravatarCannot Dems read?

"In addition, there were doubts within the intelligence community not included in the NIE."

Cannot hat read?

Oh, we've answered that. Still: Dumbest Troll. Ever.

Gravatartrolls still can't read:

In addition, there were doubts within the intelligence community not included in the NIE. And even the doubts expressed in the NIE could not be used publicly by members of Congress because the classified information had not been cleared for release. For example, the NIE view that Hussein would not use weapons of mass destruction against the United States or turn them over to terrorists unless backed into a corner was cleared for public use only a day before the Senate vote.

There was stuff not included in the NIE version given to congress. And, even stuff in the NIE given to congress couldn't be shared publicly.

I certainly agree with people that plenty of Dems knew they were getting played, but that doesn't take the blame from the players, or change the fact that the dems were still given cherry picked intelligence.

GravatarSo what's all the whining and lying about?

Ask your paymasters - they're the ones doing it.

And the key to control of legislation is having the majority, even if part of the majority is made up of conservative democrats.

Gravatarthe real reason...

Whereas the current Iraqi regime has demonstrated its continuing hostility toward, and willingness to attack, the United States, including by attempting in 1993 to assassinate former President Bush and by firing on many thousands of occasions on United States and Coalition Armed Forces engaged in enforcing the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council;

Gravatarword dan

look, i'm a lousy former grad student and i KNEW the wmd claims were bullshit. the only doubt i had came from a niggling worry that some kind of ops intel indicated a possible, but remote, "threat," perhaps akin to NK or the chicoms. but the facts were and remain plain: iraq is and was a nothing arsenal, compared to the 1,000,000,000,000 power that is our +50year nookoolaar buildup. it's crap to think that anyone or thing could seriously challenge that.

add in the full power of the NSA, cia, dod, etc., observing capabilities...crap. it's just crap. even the lowest level staffer can say, "hey: is this real?" and do a little library time. i did it. you probably did too. it's called "critical thinking." is this real? why do some say so? the answers there have nothing to do with a serious threat, and everything to do with rhetoric, mainipulation of the amurkin media, and making $ for kbr, dyncorps, etc.

and that's a fact anyone can easily prove and support.

That's just not right.....

GravatarThey just didn't care.

I think the real confirmation of that was the fact that they put absolutely no effort into trying to secure the sites where WMD would have been expected to be located. For example...

WMDs for the Taking?
While U.S. troops pushed on to Baghdad, Iraqis were looting radioactive materials from once protected sites
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/3068560/

'THIS SITE IS OUT OF CONTROL'
The well-known Al Tuwaitha Nuclear Research Center,
about 12 miles south of Baghdad, had nearly two tons
of partially enriched uranium, along with significant quantities
of highly radioactive medical and industrial isotopes, when
International Atomic Energy Agency officials made their
last visit in January. By the time U.S. troops arrived in
early April, armed guards were holding off looters-but
the Americans only disarmed the guards, Al Tuwaitha
department heads told NEWSWEEK. "We told them,
'This site is out of control. You have to take care of it',"
says Munther Ibrahim, Al Tuwaitha's head of plasma
physics. "The soldiers said, 'We are a small group.
We cannot take control of this site'." As soon as the
Americans left, looters broke in. The staff fled; when
they returned, the containment vaults' seals had been
broken, and radioactive material was everywhere.

U.S. officers say the center had already been
ransacked before their troops arrived. They didn't try to
stop the looting, says Colonel Madere, because "there
was no directive that said do not allow anyone in and
out of this place." Last week American troops finally
went back to secure the site. Al Tuwaitha's scientists
still can't fully assess the damage; some areas are too
badly contaminated to inspect. "I saw empty uranium-oxide
barrels lying around, and children playing with them," says
Fadil Mohsen Abed, head of the medical-isotopes department.
Stainless-steel uranium canisters had been stolen. Some were
later found in local markets and in villagers' homes. "We saw
people using them for milking cows and carrying drinking water,"
says Ibrahim. The looted materials could not make a nuclear bomb,
but IAEA officials worry that terrorists could build plenty of dirty
bombs with some of the isotopes that may have gone missing.

GravatarMarcia--are you sure about you and Keithy not being videotaped? I'd check eBay were I you.

GravatarChiDyke: yes, the idea of a massive non-conventional arsenal was pretty obviously bullshit. But when push came to shove -- and Bush was getting his war, regardless of the vote -- even a few crappy mustard gas shells would have been considered justification.

Look at the Regnery book right now that claims the IAEA-sealed uranium and looted pre-1990 chem shells counted as WMDs.

GravatarThat's great news! Typically the Republicans, who represent the interests of big business and wealthy individuals, raise three times as much money as the Democrats.

The Republicans, being the party of business, is also the party that isn't being run into bankruptcy.

The Democrats, with their tiny amount of money and their lavish spending, will be bankrupt by April 2006.

In 2003, The Republicans had almost 3 times the cash on hand as the Democrats.

In 2005, the Republicans have 5 times the cash on hand as the Democrats

GravatarThere were doubts about the intel being leaked into the press in the FALL OF '02. A bunch of CIA analysts RESIGNED EN MASSE IN PROTEST, before the Invasion.

Doesn't anybody remember those stories? They did happen AFTER the vote, when the Dems AND Repubs in Congress started to realize what you and I already knew even then--

--we were played. I was, too, in September. But not for long afterwards. It took about a month of reading articles after the Congressional authority was implemented to realize it.

Anyone who was paying attention knew by then. Before...?

GravatarThe Democrats, with their tiny amount of money and their lavish spending, will be bankrupt by April 2006.

Right after Plame and Wilson are indicted?

Gravatar"I saw empty uranium-oxide barrels lying around, and children playing with them," says Fadil Mohsen Abed, head of the medical-isotopes department. Stainless-steel uranium canisters had been stolen.

You know now that a wingnut author is counting this as proof of WMDs in Iraq?

this week.

Why is that?

GravatarWell, I don't know about all this sex on the tv -- I mean, I keep falling off.

GravatarYou know, one obvious conclusion that can be drawn based on the Bush stance, Saddam was a genius, brilliant at his deception, able to fool the American Intelligence community to a man. It is obvious we were up against the most insidious if intellects that rivaled Lex Luthor and Braniac combined.

Or could it be, just possible, if Bush is truly innocent of creating this war of his own agenda, the reality is Bush and his crew are some of the biggest dumb asses in history?

History books will be pondering over this war and it's implications, Bush Idiot Prince or conspiritorial sociopath. I doubt if the books will be hailing his own prowess at defending the nation.

Yeah, it involves raising money from insane leftists on blogs, $20 at a time

Win local races

Which is why the Democrats only won ONE big race in Virginia, compared to 2 in 2001.

Oh yeah, you guys won a lot of nonpartisan seats on city councils and school boards.

We'll take the congress, you can have the city council.

rely less on potentially fickle big donors.

And then run the party into bankruptcy

GravatarThe dems fucked up. There were certainly some true believers like Lieberman and Biden who signed up for the project but there were others who figured it'd be a short and sweet war. and while it's true some might have thought it could be a short and sweet war, the total lack of post-war planning and the total absence of an exit should have given anyone pause..

Ask George McGovern about that one.

At least, to my knowledge. Help me out with counter-examples.

Gravatarelections are coming, there's no way to stop this, it'll be quick and easy so let's just sign on.

Virginia
2001: 52.2-47.0 Warner
2002: 51.7-46.0 Kaine (despite Warner having an 80% approval rating)

New Jersey
2001: 56.4-41.7 McGreevy
2005: 52.6-43.8 Corzine

The Republicans are making huge gains all over the nation, and you'll know that when we cross the 60 seat barrier in 2006

I think we are talking about impeachment-
My question is how long before the pollsters add that question to the surveys...
and will the media begin to report it.

Gravatarpseud,
no, you're probably right on the short run calculation. I certainly couldn't have argued with the fact that opposing the war in '02 would've been a negative, though obviously supporting it didn't help the dems much. Still, there's something to thinking a few months ahead.

GravatarAlso, remember that the first Blair dossier came out on September 24th, 2002 -- the one with all the massaged language that took out caveats and fudged distinctions.

This was a very co-ordinated sell on both sides of the pond. And looking back... well, if Blair doesn't end his life with the long hair and haunted expression of LBJ, then he's truly a moral leper.

GravatarAssholes.

You and the dems are the only ones lying. EVERYONE agreed with the assertion that Saddam had andor planed to renew his WMD

So go to fucking hell, I'm sick of your bullshit.

GravatarThat's a pretty fucking short time-frame to organise an opposition,

and we put millions in the streets and poured all the pressure we could on our ineffective gov't reps. what else could we have done?

i'm not making exuses - i genuinely want to know. odds are we're going to need to do this again.

Gravatarespecially when the warmongers spent all summer coming up with it.
pseudonymous in nc

The warmongers had been working on the plan for 10 years. We had no chance to work up an effective opposition -- one that would have stopped the war -- in a few months.

What I wish we had done was work up *enough* opposition that 'the Democrats supported the war, too' couldn't have been used to silence us in 2004.

GravatarSHG, you know very well that basements are rare here in Central Texas.

but i didn't do enough, either. i don't know what "enough" could have been

No, me either.

I think it all goes back to the Clinton impeachment nonsense, though. That's when the country's true potential for going nuts got started.

All right. I bought the Tom Tomorrow treasury because I think Dan Perkins is a funny, smart guy, and he turned me on to blogging, and I respect him no end.

But I look at his 1990 cartoons, and I see that he fell into a trap, and so did I. We missed the point of the impeachment mess and let it become a "oh, I'm so sick of both sides" thing. That though was a cultural power grab, a shameless assault on the high points where political truth is established -- even if most of the public disagrees.

We were left flat-footed in 02 because we didn't fight the real battles of the 90s right.

I'm not being totally clear here, but maybe i explain it better later...

GravatarPat Benatar did a version.

I did not know that.

Interesting......
steve simels

Quite nice. She had/has a hell of a voice.

GravatarWhich reminds me of the article that Tweety has been focusing on, the Queen Judy piece on IRAQI NUKES published on September 8th 2002.

That was the product launch. And the Blair dossier served a similar purpose -- a supposed authoritative third party that could be used to bash critics.

Damn, those fuckers were good.

GravatarOh come on, guys. We've been doing war ever since we abandoned the Mother Goddess 6000 years ago. What is it -- 6 wars every decade for the past 6000 years? And none AT ALL before then? Get real! We've all been hoodwinked by male deity. It's time to return to Mother deity -- for the sake of men as well as women. Human beings aren't smart enough yet to live without religion. And we need to choose a religion that will nurture us -- not lead us to the edge of extinction.

GravatarYes Toby I can see this scenario

Dear Sir or Madam, we regret to inform you that your child was killed in action today. If it makes you feel any better, he or she knew what they were getting into. They accepted that their leaders may or may not have been fucking sane enough to place your child in harm's way for justifiable purposes. Have a nice day!

Why is that?

Because you never show any interest in acting on your beliefs?

Hard to take you seriously, cuntboy.

GravatarDuring the runup to the war, I had a gig at the school district administration building. In this very Red part of a Red State, a lot of ex-military work there. These folks hated Bill and Hillary Clinton almost to an fanatical degree. But they were all freely saying that it was obvious that the Iraq war was complete bullshit. Huge mistake.

I bet they still voted for Bush, though.

Gravatar"The warmongers had been working on the plan for 10 years. We had no chance to work up an effective opposition -- one that would have stopped the war -- in a few months."

I think it could have been different if the dems woulda been agressive instead of passive right after 911. I mean, this was the biggest fuckup ever...the warning signs were there but the fucking chimp was on vacation and blew it all off. Had Gore been the potus on 911, the goopers woulda had impeachment on the table within 2 weeks.

instead, the dems confused patriotic support with total capitulation. they gave the chimp everything, no questions asked. that was cowardly, and wrong, and bad for the country.

As much as I detest the modern Democratic characteristics of triangulation, spinelessness and poll testing every breath -- that was pretty classic modern politics until the neocons came to power.

Newt Gingrich started it in 1994 and our biggest mistake was not realizing then, and especially after the Clinton impeachment, just how much everything *had* changed.

Compromise, and going along to get along, which had been the gold standard in Washington for 50 years, was completely gone -- as if it had never been.

One thing the Bush experience has done is wake up even the most clueless Dem to that fact.

If you go the film route, I'm no expert, but I can tell you that a dumb ol' manual SLR with a match-needle meter is just fine. That's all I used for about 10-15 years, and it served me well. The fancy automatic stuff isn't really all that essential.

I hope so. My family is flaky, so they show up and expect entertainment on short notice, and I would not subject you to that.

GravatarI like this quote (via Power Line) from Pincus and Milbank today:

The administration's overarching point is true: Intelligence agencies overwhelmingly believed that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, and very few members of Congress from either party were skeptical about this belief before the war began in 2003. Indeed, top lawmakers in both parties were emphatic and certain in their public statements.

If the President invaded Iraq knowing that there were no WMDS, it was smarter to do it then when the troops would not be in such danger than it would be later when the likelihood of there being WMD would have been greater.

It was never an argument about imminence; it was about potential and intention.

GravatarFor a DSLR which is kinda advanced but will never be boring, go with the Nikon D70s kit, prob $800 online. Very rugged and endlessly expandable. For a budget beginner whiling to learn try the Kodak 7590, a little slow but better than most, and not boring. I use mine allot. Maybe $300 if you shop around (w/dock). GravatarNikons are more eighteen and up but it deserved a mention. It will be a good cam ten years from now, and there ain't many who can say that.

GravatarI'm tired of the propaganda rag this paper has become. This is my city and it deserves better.
sallyh,Grandmere Poissonniere

And there really used to be two decent papers in this state -- the Times and the San Jose Merc.

Now we have one. (OK -- One and a half -- The Sacto Bee has its moments)

You'd really think a state with 35 million people could support more than one decent paper.

GravatarDid I *say* Ntoddy?

No, no I didn't.

You were thinking it. I could tell.

GravatarNikons are more eighteen and up but it deserved a mention. It will be a good cam ten years from now, and there ain't many who can say that.

Love my Nikon D70, but am totally drooling over the D200. I will own one someday, oh yes.

GravatarCentral--does this mean you have to throw rocks tomorrow?
sallyh,Grandmere Poissonniere

I might, it's not a sure thing. Even if I don't, there's plenty for me to do around here. I'm trying to get a new pond done before winter and I really need to get busy.

GravatarHow the hell do you sleep with such temperature swings?
flory

It eventually evens out. I usually just leave my windows open.

And don't sleep.

GravatarThe near-30-year friendship? I declare it to be over.

He's gonna keep anybody warm, its gonna be me, not Marcia.

GravatarWe spend $44 billion a year on intelligence, but the President takes us to war based on the word of known liars, drunks, and embezzlers - and obviously phony documents.

You're much more selfish than I remember. You're already getting the Eli timeshare after Christmas.

GravatarThat 7590 looks like a hell of a deal, at least in terms of features. Dunno if it has any achilles' heels like crap battery life or picture quality or flash.

Battery real good, flash OK, hot shoe is cable plug not standard top mount though. I love mine, actually focuses quickly in dark and dim with IR, then takes brilliant color with flash. I always hated digitals that would take forever to focus in bad light.

GravatarHe's gonna keep anybody warm, its gonna be me, not Marcia.

And that's supposed to make me feel better.

GravatarJeffraham--I'm so sorry. But I could see why it had to be.

GravatarJP -- ah, what can you do. I've never broken up with a friend, tho. I'm sure you've been through worse.

GravatarNeeding a reason beyond mere existence to shop.

Actually, I don't usually have that problem - but there are dollar thresholds.

Gravatarsallyh, I would teach city kids if I had the opportunity. This is my first time out of the chute and I really needed to be getting on with a career and it was an "in" if you will.

I have no administrative support, no mentor, I'm not certified which in the hickvilles of TX means reatively little NCLB rules notwithstanding(4.0 in English however) teaching Theater to kids who don't see the point of learning algebra much less Theater since they plan to work on drilling rigs when they turn 16.
My brief was, and I quote the HS principal, "I don't care if you teach them Shakespear all year, just keep them busy".
This is the same person who called a Veteran's Day assembly this morning and proceeded to make very Tobyesque statements about why we are at war...fight them over there so we don't have to over here etc. However, his "logic" wasn't even as clear cut as Toby's. My husband also teaches at this school and as a Korean War Veteran, he was highly offended.

GravatarEli, you should be taking bids!

GravatarOh, we have a swinging, uh, apartment filled with grownups in Elmhurst after X-mas.

Wooo.

I repeat. Wooo.

Gravatar Eli, you should be taking bids!

No, this is all strictly pro bono.

Oh, we have a swinging, uh, apartment filled with grownups in Elmhurst after X-mas.

I really wish I had enough vacation days to bridge the gap from Christmas, but I'm just 2 or 3 short. Sigh.

Cheez, he's already auctioned off the timeshares. What more do you want?

Gravatarflory: JP -- sorry to hear that. I take it he wasn't willing to restore your access?

Central Scrutinizer: I'm about to put myself into a similar position with a guy that I've known for 15 years. I can't help that he's willfully ignorant.

In this instance, I think what we actually have is someone intolerant of being called out on his reliance on appeal to authority in front of a group of like-minded people.

Eli: Sorry, Jeffro. Kinda saw it comin', though.

After ten months, it doesn't surprise me, or bother me, so much. I was just getting tired of him trying to re-establish contact with me with the expectation that we would not have to discuss the cause of the rift, ever. I don't operate like that. I'd have very little self-respect if I did.

He says he's wasting his time, so I asked him simply, "Don't call. Don't e-mail. Don't bother. Have a nice life."

I had one of those end two years ago. All because I didn't "support our president." Then my so-called friend invited me to leave the country.

We haven't spoken since.

In fact, this summer my ex-friend got a job working in my building and walked past me twice like I didn't exist.

Fuck it. That's not a friend. You're better off.

GravatarI'm sure you'll have lovely memories.

They'll be bittersweet.

GravatarFlory--men deny shopping, but how come they bring home so much crap from Frys' and Home Depot?

Kinky.

Not a homeowner.

Homeownership requires at minimum a 14v rechargeable drill/screwdriver and a complete bit set. Plus assorted hammers, nailguns, glueguns, levels etc.

GravatarMarcia Brady:

<Emily Litella>

Never mind...

</Emily Litella>

Well then, you have a good eye for picking other people's photos. Which tells me you ought to be allowed around a camera -- particularly nowadays, when the things are so automated they just about take the picture for you.

(Back OT) Besides the obvious political calculation, there's another factor that I'll bet was on the politicians' minds at the time, one that so far I haven't seen anyone mention: The Al Qaeda wildcard.

I'm not talking about any putative links to Iraq, but what would have been the likely political fallout if the Dems had managed to derail Georgie's war -- or at least made a bitter fight of it -- and there had been another attack like the Twin Towers, or worse.

Can you imagine what the Right would have made of that? Hell, the Dems in Congress would have been lucky to escape with their lives, much less the extinction of the party.

Cowardly? Yes, but remember: Al Qaeda's capabilities were an unknown quantity. The more uncertainties in a situation, the easier it is to justify going along with the more assertive side, no matter how idiotic the leaders or the plan. Most politicians just don't have the kind of courage needed to stand firm against what was in essence a national lynch mob.

Anyway, it's way too late at night to try being coherent.

'Nite, Mondfledermausen.

How about a library copy of Maglaglalangagangs latest?

Yes. But then you would owe me some Bailey's.

I can't bend the rules too far.

Gravatarsallyh, we all know that every man has to have at least five rolls of 12" wide duct tape on the floor of the pickup!

That's so unfair, duct tape comes in colors now. So you gotta get blue, black, yellow, red, green and grey.

GravatarHave you seen this? Looks like it might have something to do with boot partitions.

Why would you want to partition your boots?

How will your feet fit in there?

GravatarNot a homeowner.

GravatarThersites--you drink that Baileys without whiskey? What's wrong with you?

OK, you confirmed my suspicions. Was getting ready to just blast the boot drive into random bits then start over with an unsullied one.

GravatarFre(d)eper, Toby?

See if you can identify this voice:

Yeah, what SSquirrel says...

Me too. I don't mind doing minor stuff, but that's about it.

I understand that chewing gum and baleing wire is also de rigeur for the male tool sachel. What's really scary is that you can now get duct tape in four shades of cammo. My son once fell asleep in Spanish class...his fellow students taped him to his desk...

Eli, did you just tell us that you have a small toolkit? tell us you are a watchmaker, please!

Gravatartable saw,
radial saw,

I'm in love.

If I only had someplace to put them...besides the balcony I mean.

The neighbors might object.

GravatarThey're certainly right and I'm surpised that no one in the MSM picked up on this earlier because many of us here in the Left Blogosphere knew about all this.

Lawmakers certainly did not have the volume of intel that Bush and Cheney had, certainly not the most sensitive info and they absolutely did not have the PDB.

So lawmakers have some excuse for not voting with all the right facts. Still, they never read past the five page Executive Summary of the 92 page intelligence report. And, as John Conyers tells us in F 9/11, lawmakers almost never actually read the bills they vote on.

GravatarAm I a boy?
Marcia Brady

No. But your name's prolly Martha.

GravatarWhat's really scary is that you can now get duct tape in four shades of cammo.

Really?

I haven't bought duct tape in years.

GravatarEli, did you just tell us that you have a small toolkit? tell us you are a watchmaker, please!

I mainly just need wee philipshead screwdrivers for screwing and unscrewing drives and fans and whatnot. Occasionally tweezers to help remove jumpers.

GravatarThis isn't entirely crazy. I used to have a house with an obsolete steam heating plant (no parts were avalible for it). the lathes came in very handy to turn replacement parts.

GravatarNo. But your name's prolly Martha.
flory

Surprisingly not close.

I did get a sewing machine for my birthday...

GravatarI mainly just need wee philipshead screwdrivers for screwing and unscrewing drives and fans and whatnot.

Actually, I do have a couple of those teeny little screwdrivers.

They're useful little buggers.

GravatarGood night, dearest batses.

GravatarUse gorilla, epoxy, or super glue instead.

Right. I do.

Gravatar

Thersites--you drink that Baileys without whiskey? What's wrong with you?

I have a long and incredibly involved Bailey's story. It involves DI football, corporate malfeasance, cronyism, substance abuse, and extramarital sex in a Dublin convent.

Ask me later.

GravatarI haven't bought duct tape in years.

Use gorilla, epoxy, or super glue instead.
doug,

The pipe under my kitchen sink is pretty much entirely reconstructed from duct tape. Gray duct tape.

GravatarI did get a sewing machine for my birthday...
Marcia Brady

A sewing machine cancels out any number of macho tools. You're definitely a girl.

GravatarThers, who is Miami playing tomorrow?

GravatarI'm watching a show about this haunted house in maryland.

I don't know why they didn't just yell at the ghosts.

GravatarThe internets are kinda scary, huh?

I lived and worked in SF for many years. Sexual orientation isn't one of my fears.

GravatarI haven't opened it yet...

My sewing machine was stolen out of a friends car about 10 years ago. I used the insurance proceeds to partially fund the cost of the most ridiculously expensive gadget laden machine imaginable. You can connect it to your 'puter and design embroidery.

Ask me how much use its got in the last ten years....

Gravatardogs cats or ferrets would drive them out. They'd be curious about the noises and would chase them endlessly.

I dunno. I've lived in haunted houses with dogs. The dogs are frequently scared. I dunno about ferrets.

GravatarThe really fun saw is a sawsall. you can destroy things rather rapidly with those.

Gravatarthers, and stilts. Don't forget stilts.

Wake Forest. They have played fairly well, actually. I can't their offense doing anything, tho. Night game.

Exactly. I told my girls to get me the simplest one available, since I'll only use it to make costumes and stuff.

GravatarDoes Fresca really have those little bitty chicks inside?

GravatarKody, the smaller black dog I've been posting pictures of is either too stupid or too brave to be afraid.

When in the woods here I have to call her all the time so that she doesn't chase things she shouldn't, like dall sheep, moose, and even a bear.

GravatarI've decided that people that write advertising are the most evil people imaginable.

Except for the bushies.

GravatarWe had a sawsall for the longest time... NYMary is a fiend for power tools. She really is a carpenter -- the real cheese, you know. I'm just your typical male nut with a hammer.

We do own a shotgun and a pogo stick, though. For reasons I cannot fathom. I think it'd be shame not to combine these items with whiskey.

Gravatar I've decided that people that write advertising are the most evil people imaginable.

Except for the bushies.

I think the ad people work *for* the Bushies. Although it could well be the other way 'round.

GravatarMarcia, I once owned a Singer sewing machine. When it reached about the age of 10 I decided I needed a new machine
as the Singer was getting pretty tired.
Tightwad (for all save himself) ex spouse didn't want to buy me a new one. So, one day I set it up in his office which was in our basement, loaded the bobbin with the cheapest cotton-wrapped poly thread I could find and tried to sew three layers of denim for half an hour. Every time the thread broke I patiently re-threaded it. He finally stopped me and said "oh for the love of god go buy a new one"!
He never figured it out...but then he went out and bought a $2,000 JET table saw with all the trimmings and used it only twice.

GravatarWe do own a shotgun and a pogo stick, though.

I haven't seen a pogo stick in years.

Gravatarwe havw just startted "peer reviews" as part of our performance evals".

I think it;s weird.

Comments?

We have a new HR head who is going this direction.

GravatarDoes Fresca really have those little bitty chicks inside?

it's the truth in advertising concept. Advertising workers I think get tired of telling lies all the time, If you watch ads you'll see they hint at some hidden truth about the product. In this case Fresca must have e-coli and swimming things in it.

GravatarSo the Little Sociopath™ has been dusting off the "Why don't you fuckers talk nice to me?" whines eh? I always picture it as a little Gollum like thing, sniviling and cackling, or like a Renfield munching on bugs. It's pretentious inclusion of itself in rhetoric suggesting membership in the current ruling class is rather pathetic really. I know everyone feels a need to belong but this thing reads like one of those awful urban stories about a misfit that nobody likes, not even the gang that lets it participate in petty vandalism with them. It's probably going to enjoy things even more when the Dems win a house or two back because then it gets to play as part of the victim class -- probably reflexively accusing Democrats of rigging elections as though we had been the ones to introduce blackbox voting machines. Is it Orwellian doublethink, where it's just so conditioned that it really doesn't know or is there just some twisted getting off involved in yelling "Stop thief" when you're the one doing the robbing? Who knows, and I don't know which answer bothers me more. I will tell you what does bother me, I know, even now, that I won't feel as guilty as I should when the payback starts kicking in.

GravatarMarcia -- smart decision.

But you see, I've also got all this fabulous fabric I bought while traveling -- there's this little shop in Florence that gets all the remnants from the designer's lines -- so I tell myself I'm gonna make myself the most amazing wardrobe.

After I lose some weight, of course.

GravatarWe do own a shotgun and a pogo stick, though.

I haven't seen a pogo stick in years.

You can tell 4legs is in Texas...

GravatarI think the ad people work *for* the Bushies. Although it could well be the other way 'round.

One time, after they had been gone for hours, he came back, carrying her. Seems she took off after a deer. He had to chase her down, then carry her back up the mountain because she had tired herself out.

I did get a sewing machine for my birthday...
Marcia Brady

Shit, I'd love a good sewing machine. I wanna make some burlap roman shades for the bedroom. And I'd really like to taper the waist on allot of my button downs. Oh, and a pre-emptive Bite Me!

GravatarWe do own a shotgun and a pogo stick, though. For reasons I cannot fathom. I think it'd be shame not to combine these items with whiskey.

It does seem appropriate. We've got drunk hunters driving around logging roads with a bottle of whiskey on the dash and a couple of loaded rifles leaning on the truck seat.

GravatarYou can tell 4legs is in Texas...

We now have concealed carry permits. So every other nut has both a shotgun and a pistol on them.

Retards.

GravatarI think it'd be shame not to combine these items with whiskey.
Thers

Inventive and potentially deadly. Sounds like something I could get behind.

GravatarOK. Well, I've had some wine. Lemme get those shotgun shells and the pogo stick...

You guys think I need to go outside for this, or could I stay in the kitchen?

GravatarI think it;s weird.

Comments?

So you and the guy/gal competing for the same promotion get to evaluate each other?

yeah, that's useful.

Gravatarmarcia b....

GravatarYou guys think I need to go outside for this, or could I stay in the kitchen?

Depends on how high your ceiling is.

GravatarAfter I lose some weight, of course.
flory

Don't wait. I'm sure you're beautiful.

Gravatar

Imagine how much safer you'd feel if they also had pogo sticks.

GravatarI would like to sew lion kitty a frock coat.

Is there a place to set up a camera outside? If not, kitchen.

GravatarImagine how much safer you'd feel if they also had pogo sticks.

True.

GravatarMarcia -- Shanandoah? Virgina? Whereabouts?

Gravatarflory, luckily, in this instance, each of us has his/her own position, which is supposedlt not in competition with any other.

I still think it;s weird and waaaayyyy too subjective.

GravatarYou guys think I need to go outside for this, or could I stay in the kitchen?
Thers

You guys thinking of redoing the kitchen anytime soon?

GravatarShanandoah? Virgina? Whereabouts?
flory

Yes. I used to live in Annandale. And Alexandria. And a long time before that, Warrenton -- in the middle of Horse and Cattle Country.

GravatarThere used to be a store in Sunnyside California, that had painted in large black letters on the side of a bright yellow building.

GASOLINE BEER BULLETS

GravatarI still think it;s weird and waaaayyyy too subjective.

Sounds weird to me too.

Gravatarflory, what's the name of the shop?

I have a cousin who lives in Florence whom I plan to visit soon...I'm sure he'd take me there if I asked. Ooooh
designer remnants! luscious Italian silks and wools. Don't worry aobut losing weight just buy more fabric and be happy.

There are few things better than a man who knows his way around a sewing machine.

GravatarI have a cousin who lives in Florence whom I plan to visit soon

You didn't mean Italy?

How disappointing.

GravatarDon't wait. I'm sure you're beautiful.
Marcia Brady

((smooch)) thanks.

Family story -- my mother bought about ten yards of beautiful cashmere fabric when she was stationed in Bermuda during WWII. She was always going to make herself a coat out of it -- after she lost 10 lbs.
Mom died in 1983. I still have the 10 yards of beautiful cashmere.

I'm gonna make a suit out of it.

I am!!

You do know that the last words most often heard in TX are, "hey guys, watch this!"

GravatarAll right, I'm suing those pogo stick bastards. There's NO warning whatsoever about what happens when you fire straight into your kitchen ceiling from your pogo stick.

You'd think they'd say SOMETHING.

Gravatar12ga. outside

you need to select the load

the range of loads?
bat shot - leaves a nice tattoo
buck shot - more entry wounds
slugs - better exit wound

you have to leave something to keep the county coronor amused.

Lord High Plushiness™ deserves a morning suit, I think.

Gravatar4lg and flory...thanks!!

Although,m have to tell ya that the chance of my being heard in this is negligible.

It;s gonna happen, no matter what I think.

Unfortunately, the competition for $$ is turning what used to be a (relatively) okay academic environment into your biz-as-usual, corporate dog-eat-dog scenario.

Jeebus, I hate this shit!!!

As if what I think matters, which is certainly does not!!

GravatarI'm gonna make a suit out of it.

I am!!
flory

Do it! I can't sew anything from a pattern, but I did make a beautiful mermaid costume for my older daughter, and an angel costume from charmeuse and lace for the younger.

GravatarI still think it;s weird and waaaayyyy too subjective.
Sarah Deere | 11.12.05 - 2:57 am | #

I'm not a labor lawyer, but I would think that given the laws on the confidentiality of personnel matters, peer input in promotions would be slightly irregular.

GravatarI still think it;s weird and waaaayyyy too subjective.
Sarah Deere

Yeah. Isn't a good manager/supervisor supposed to be able to tell how well you play with the other children?
Asking their opinion just kinda muddies the waters.

GravatarYou'd think they'd say SOMETHING.
Thers

Did you look on the bottom of the pogo stick. I'm pretty sure there's a law...

HA! I'm off to sleep. My favorite all time sign, from VERY rural pennsylvania, circa 1999:

Kewl. I used to live in Arlington.

Did you ever go to Gold Cup when you lived in Arlington?

GravatarDoylestown Pa had a very thorough Junior High Home Ec and Shop department. Metal casting, lathes, cooking and sewing, boys and girls, NO exceptions!

GravatarMarcia - I meant when you lived in Warrenton, not Arlington.

Can't remember the name. But if your cousin lives there I'm sure he/she knows or can find out. Its right near Il Duomo.

Its a very dangerous shop. Take cash and leave the credit cards behind.

then you also have that handy little item called the Glaser Safety Slug. goes through soft objects but is deflected by walls. A nice little round for shooting up the kitchen after tea.

Gravatar4lg.....Maxx in a frock coat sounds wunnerful!!!!!!!!

GravatarDid you ever go to Gold Cup when you lived in Arlington?
flory

Yes, but I was little, so I don't remember much.

I got pregnant in Arlington. Nice city.

GravatarSHG, how could I pursue that???

Gravatarthe range of loads?
bat shot - leaves a nice tattoo

go with the buck, but tack out the shot and fill with Epsom salts.

(Just in case)

Gravatarflory, thanks! we'll check it out I'm sure he knows it. $$ advice noted. Make someting from the cashmere, but you will need a serger for it. I have a Baby Loc, and it's really easy to use. Worth every centavo.

Gravatarthen you also have that handy little item called the Glaser Safety Slug. goes through soft objects but is deflected by walls. A nice little round for shooting up the kitchen after tea.

And I thought the family I was raised in was disfunctional and weird. I'm beginning to think they were almost normal.

GravatarI got pregnant in Arlington. Nice city.

Well, it does have more going for it than horizontal surfaces....

I go back to Warrenton for Gold Cup every couple years. I have a friend who gets tickets. Its not so much fun since the new sheriff banned the bookies, tho.

GravatarWell, good night. I think I will try to make a dent in the 500 pages I'm supposed to read.

Kisses all around.

GravatarSD, what the Safety Slugs or the personnel matter?

GravatarSHG -- its woven cashmere, not knit. Regular machine will work fine, if I ever decide on what to make.

Gravatarwhat the Safety Slugs or the personnel matter?

personnel matter is what gets on the walls with safety slugs.

This should be mandatory in all junior highs I think.
Along with basic auto maintenance.

doug, | 11.12.05 - 3:11 am | #

doug, you don't know the half of it. My ex was a paranoid delusional who kept guns all over the house. He was terrified that someone would break in, but the real reason he kept them was to intimidate me. He was always harping on about gun safety but one night he tried to shoot an armadillo from our bedroom window with a Ruger .38...he banged the grip on the window frame accidentally and nearly shot himself through the head.

He then went outside to try to finish off the dillo. What he didn't know is that dillo's deflect bullets pretty well. If I had gotten really lucky that night it oculd have saved us all a lot of grief.

GravatarSHG, I've always wondered how many of the NRA folks are like that? I've shot guns since I was a small child, but have never felt the need to carry or use one on a person.

GravatarWhat I did shoot outside my front door a couple of days ago.

Gravatarflory, it sounds wonderful...wear it in good health.

SD, I'd talk to a good labor lawyer about the ins and outs of "peer review"...which really sounds like the HS Drama Club elections to me. It may depend on how much weight the reviews are given, and if your supervisors discuss your performance with anyone other than you.

Gravatardoug -- Wow!

Where do you live?

GravatarThere's nothing a 12 ga. shotgun can't do. I weep for our modern law enforcement Officers with their CAR's.

A 12 gauge slug can take out a car at range. And .00 buckshot will turn any meeting into a quick appeasement session.

If you want to talk "force", the shotgun is the way to go.

I cry Bullshit on dropping down to 20 gauge.

GravatarSouth of Hamilton Montana.

Gravatardoug, that's lovely...you in Alaska?

GravatarMust go, have to shut down everything so I can record a clip for C&L

Gravatardoug, that's lovely...you in Alaska?

Naw, the snow is beginning to stick on the mountain tops. Finally,

it's late this year. We should have had this much a month ago.

That would explain the Big Sky thing.

My current esposo was in the Korean War.
He was with a recon unit that carried M1A1 90mm artillery. He says that they make a very satisfying thump when fired. Shoots aobut 9 miles.

Gotta go to bed bats. been up since early...want to have the wattage to come back here tomorrow.
