Unfortunately for Romney, he's not quite insane enough to win over the rabid wingnuts.
Here's hoping the Repukes nominate Brownback. Let the people see the true beast that hides behind their "compassionate conservatism" mask.

Catholic League calls off boycott after Wal-Mart apology for worker's e-mail
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A Roman Catholic civil rights group called off a boycott of Wal-Mart on Friday after the world's largest retailer apologized for an employee's e-mail that called Christmas a mix of world religions.
"This is a sweet victory for the Catholic League, Christians in general, and people of all faiths," said Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, said in a statement on the group's Web site.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Thursday that a customer-service employee named Kirby had written an inappropriate e-mail to a woman who complained that the retailer had replaced a "Merry Christmas" greeting with "Happy Holidays." It also said Kirby no longer worked for Wal-Mart.
Kirby wrote that Christmas resulted from traditions ranging from Siberian shamanism to Visigoth calendars.
"Santa is also borrowed from the Caucuses (sic), mistletoe from the Celts, yule log from the Goths, the time from the Visigoth and the tree from the worship of Baal. It is a wide wide world," Kirby wrote.
Wal-Mart spokesman Dan Fogleman said Kirby's e-mail – sent without any review by other employees – did not represent Wal-Mart's policies.
"We sincerely apologize to any person or organization that was offended by the inappropriate and inflammatory comments made by this former associate," Fogleman said.
Fogleman said employees will continue to wish people "Happy Holidays" because the greeting is more inclusive.
Donohue said the practice, though "dumb," was never part of his group's complaint.
"We only trigger boycotts when we've been grossly offended," he said.

Just a little hint for those of you who visit rural Minnesota during this lovely time of year (when the leaves are off the trees and there's no snow...a brown wonderland); there is no fru-fru coffee in small towns.
And you better have that Folgers black unless you are a showoff.
Just a little travel advice.

John Silber is the Joe Loserman of Massachussetts...
a feculent, facile, crypto-fascist fuckwit...
had i been a Mass resident, i would have abstained from voting for eather candidate, or simply 'wasted' my vote on an alternative...
there was and would have been very little to distinguish between Silber and Romney,...

but then again, how MA let a fucking mormon from utah run that state is still heyond me.

chidyke,
I was living out of state when Romney was elected and it's still a mystery to me how it happened. My guess is that the woman (Dem) he ran against (Shannon O'Brien) was so awful to the voters, that they went for Mitt, and now regret it.
I get the feeling, very often, that somehow we in Massachusetts have borrowed a governor from a sparsely populated, jeebofascist western state.

The other night I was watching, Hardball I think, and they had a Republican operative on talking about Chalabi. The guest made a statement that went something like this:
Chalabi has learned well has two goals in mind. He wants be in charge of the government and he wants to be rich.
This just hit me like a slap. That, after all, is their goal. The picture of this man with a voiceover explaining the context of what he is saying should be the most effective advertising tool against them.

I'm a black coffee drinker-- a little lactose intolerant. When I first moved here to Canadaland, I went to Tim Horton's and ordered a "regular coffee." "Regular coffee" at Tim's is with milk and sugar. Most people order a "double-double"-- two milks, two sugars.

The fact is Romney has failed to stem the tide of liberalism in Massachusetts. Big Time.
He could have turned any success here into a great victory in the heart of darkness. Thankfully, the state legislature shut him down and hopefully took him out of the running on the national stage.

Well you see the thing is, being from Minnesota I think that maybe I do just deserve Folgers. I mean it won't kill you, and it does make you stronger.
I mean, if I start spendin' the money for the quality coffee I'll sort of stand out, apart from the crowd and that would just be wrong.

And don't forget, Romney's speech that night was on, "... how the awful librul activist judges of the Supreme Judicial Court (The Commonwealth's highest court and interpreter of the state constitution) legislated from the bench and forced, FORCED, I tell you, the good Christian citizens of the Commonwealth, these upstanding, noble, yet, humble Christians, to accept the SIN OF STAE SANCTIONED SODOMY in their very midst!"
"It plainly states in the Book of Mormon (A NEW Testiment of Jesus Christ, I might add. Let me repeat. JESUS CHRIST, our Blessed Saviour!) that marriage is the state of HOLY wedlock only between a man and as many women as he can support."
"What next can we expect from the black robed brigands that squat like feculent toads on the bench? I'll tell you what we can expect! Mandatory & compulsory INTERRACIAL HOMOSEXUAL MARRIAGES!"
(at this point, his speech is interrupted as women faint and need to be carried from the room. Some men weep, and are clumsily comforted by the more manly practicing heterosexual men in the audience.)
"And these marriages will be limited BY LAW to only one year, then DIVORCE is madatory, followed by these deviants being forced to marry YET AGAIN... to YOUR VERY SONS AND DAUGHTERS!"
"Thank you for your kind attention! My name is Mitt Romney. Remember that, come 2008. God Bless you and God Bless the United States of America!"
At this point, thousands of magnetic ribbons, made in China, bearing the legend, "I SUPPORT OUR MARRIED HTEROSEXUAL REPUBLICAN TROOPS AND YOU DON'T, YOU FUCKING COMMIE FAGGOT!" were thrown to the crowd, while Governor Romney made some complicated hand gestures, later described as a Mormon blessing of peace, and NOT the so-called "Shocker" handgesture frequently seen at "rock and roll" musical performances and in Michael Moore's "church".

The Democrats had too many contenders and ran the race ragged before they got out of the primaries. That's how I saw it, mostly. The Democratic candidate wasn't wonderful but she was ok. I also think that there was a vote both for having a man (lots of conservative Irish here) and for the idea that not everything in the state would be governed by Democrats.

MA has a deeply entrenched Dem majority in the legislature, that goes a ways towards 'Pubs getting elected Gov here. But we're accustomed to them being of the Bill Weld variety. Romney ran as a "CEO Governor" who would presumably fix the state's budget woes and leave well enough alone in the social arena. Well, now we see that his governorship here had been nothing more than an opportunistic springboard for a nomination in '08 and the legislature takes joy in thwarting him at every turn (except for this latest "mandatory health insurance" crap).
Anyway, the man has used this state as a stepping stone for his ambitions, and regularly uses us as the butt of jokes when he goes to these events out of state. I despise the greasy, smarmy prick.

In addition to the intra-party fighting during the primary, Shannon O'Brien was the Treasurer--and every pol that has held the office of Treasurer in MA in my conscious lifetime, Democrat or Republican, has emerged from it seriously tainted. I think O'Brien was actually less tainted by it than her last couple of predecessors, but she was still tainted.
As Tiny says, we have a long-standing overwhelming Democratic majority in both houses of the legislature, and electing sane examples of Homo Republicanus, when available, to the governor's office as a brake on potential excesses generally seems like a good idea.
Mitt Romney ran as a sane Republican--more conservative than Weld or Celluci or Swift, sure, but respectful of MA culture and traditions. The really strange thing is that he's actually behaved more like a sane Republican in his substantive actions than you'd ever believe from how he markets himself. His judicial appointmentss, for instance, are pretty moderate--not at all consistent with his ravings in his Federalist Society speech about Evil Liberal Judicial Activists.
But he ticked off even conservative, pro-death penalty, MA Republicans with a death-penalty proposal that was clearly intended for no other purpose than to make him more attractive to out-of-state Republican wingers. (There have been other examples of the out-of-place propsoal that clearly has nothing to do with MA, but that's a fairly recent one.) He works closely--at home--with both Democrats and Republicans, with both liberals and conservatives--and then goes out of state, talks to Republican groups he vainly hopes will support for president a Republican who was able to get elected in Massachusetts, and bashes the state, the culture, and the very individuals he has worked with in the past and needs to work with again in the future.
He's intelligent and competent, but competence seems to be the only thing that even vaguely resembles a principle for him--he was actually moved to criticize federal performance in the Katrina aftermath, what that was clearly verboten for the entire Republican party. Anything else, no matter how much it sounds like he believes in it, he'll abandon in a heartbeat if he thinks it will gain him some political advantage.
