I think we all have that kind of tribal, primal instinct inside of us and it comes out from time to time.
The difference between a liberal and a Republican (I don't bother calling them "conservative") is that the liberal will try to build a society that works against these racist, xenophobic tendencies, Republicans build societies that celebrate them.
Abramoff could be the A-bomb of corruption for the Gooper party.
Here's hoping they remain "radio-active" and unelectable for the usual half-life of 10,000 years.

Excellent advice.
Now ... there is a letter to the NYT that is irritating me. It is in response to a Fuckwad John Tierney column about Wal-Mart. I guess Tierney said that people who complain about Wal-Mart mistreating employees are affluent and don't have to shop there (i.e., liberal elitists). His evidence for this is that Target stores don't get attacked because they cater to liberal elitists. Then he says:
Working-class families may benefit more from Wal-Mart's lower prices than they would from higher wages. A dollar added to the wages is taxed, while every dollar saved on purchases is tax-free.
WTF? is this argument (which is being made by an "urban development consultant," btw (is "consultant" synonymous with "unemployed" in your town? It is here.)?

Y'know, if people just thought about what they were about to say before they actually said it -- taking that metaphorical breath before letting the words actually escape their mouths -- half of this crap would never happen. As it is, everybody's so damn touchy, it ends up being self-escalating, with people getting more honked off about the reactions on both sides to a statement than to the statement itself.

I just don't seem to know my place, so I think that I'll have to kick my own ass.
From 4th to 7th grade, I was bussed to a black school. I remember being amazed at how destructive the black boys were to their school, smashing windows with rocks when no teachers were around; once pissing on the curtain controls to the auditorium. In 7th grade, one white female teacher was completely intimidated, and every day put an assignment up on the board to "summarize" a part of the text (3 1/2 pages = A+, 3 pages = B+, etc.) and sat in the corner for the whole class, while the mostly black boys formed the desks in a circle and played poker for money, and generally intimidating the rest of the class. I remember having to dodge the occasional flying dictionary.
I don't think of myself as racist, but I know that experience influences my view of blacks.

(3) The only people in my entire life that have told me or hinted that I said something racist have been other white people. Come to think of it, they were all 'ultraliberals' - e.g. the green party didn't really go far enough to the left for them.
(4) I ain't gonna apologize to someone who is being a sanctimonious ass.

This is a great point by ampersand. My research and scholarship is mostly in the area of race and gender and criminal law (often around the death penalty). I am finishing a piece about prosecutors undervaluing Black women who are sexually assaulted in their charging decisions. I start with the rather uncontroversial truth that for most of the life of this country, raping a Black woman was simply not a crime.
I have presented my work twice and you should hear the responses. Not that what I am saying is not true, but rather that "Prosecutors are NOT racists." Christ on a Cracker! What I am saying is that the current undervaluation of Black rape victims is a product in part of societal attitudes left over from when raping a slave was OK. But all people can hear is a personal attack -- in my case, both "racist" and "sexist."
As long as the people with real power (like prosecutors) react to the imagined slight rather than the evidence of what is happening in practice, we will not get anywhere.

Well I am Amanda linked to this, because she should consider it closely. Amanda, white grrl, is incredibly sexist to the point of being a misandrist.
Whenever anyone of any pov attempts to discuss her illogical rants she cusses them out and reflexively accuses them of being members of MRAs and being misogynists. And women themselves are not excluded. Amanda has the truth on the patriarchy, and any woman that begs to differ is basically told that she is an uncle tom.
Once upon a time, women's liberation was about liberating women AND men. Now at Amanda's site, women's liberation is about gaining and keeping and leveraging power that women have gained over men, even when that leads to demonstrable injustices.
A common cry there is that it is ridiculous for any man to claim that they are discriminated against in any fashion, BECAUSE of course, they are men and members of the patriarchy.

Define racist statement? Is it a catch phrase or an active comment? I have one phrase in my lexicon that I have managed to stifle for years. It means nothing to me in terms of making a racist remark, but it is an extremely racist remark. Because I heard this phrase growing up frequently in just about any venue, it became entrenched. I haven't used it since a teen and I became aware, but like someone translating from one language to another, it rolls to the tip of my tongue until my internal translator catches up and substitutes. I am scared to death one day I will be a bit too slow.

It's hard to raise kids to be sensitive to racism and sexism and homophobia. It's in the air they breathe, and they often have no idea they're doing it.
Funny story: I was teaching Franklin's "The Sale of the Hessians" when a kid asked me why the Germans were fighting for the Italians when he thought they were fighting for the British. Took me ages to figure out what the kid was talking about, but Franklin does say they're willing to die "for guineas."

Res, I was in HS in upstate NY when the news of AIDS broke into the MSM. I remember it getting scarier to be gay.
AIDS jokes were everywhere and ignorance prevailed. I vividly remember the jocks insisting that contagious, AIDS carrying gays (to them that was all gays) don't belong in school.
It would be interesting to watch ongoing studies that examine the trends in racism and homophobia in school (and college campuses). It would be telling to see whether the two trend with each other. GLSEN is a good organization, I haven't really seen much on this. I should dig around at Ampersand.

One of the things I'm not thrilled with "South Park" for, but that's the nature of a so-called equal opportunity offender, I guess. Doesn't help the less-intelligent kids separate the messages, unfortunately.
But that's not to say the kids aren't markedly more gay-friendly than even my day (10 years ago or so). In the last 2 years, I've worked on a couple of cases where gay students were being treated unfairly by their school administration, and each student had the full support of the community. So that much is good news, I think.

Well, as EkCenTriK noted upthread, many of us were raised with bith racial and ethnic slurs as part of our linguistic contours. It's CEO sold it to Proctor & Gamble for a dubious price but he will collect over $160 million in the sale of his Gillette stock.
Exactly. The original venture capitalists that bought my company 10 years ago took my company's pension money (highly funded as the work force averaged 20-25 years with the company), & spread that out over the company that we merged with, diluting our pensions. It was a smart move on their part as they didn't "steal" the pension, they jsut made it so that the people that earned the pension would have to work an average of 8 more years to get the same amount.
Then, they pocketed all the money that would have otherwise funded the pension plan for about 5 years. Then
they got bored, borrowed $400 million against the company, pocketed that, sent the company into bankruptcy (chap 11) and walked.
Good work if you can get it.

In my experience, prejudice increases not linearly, but exponentially when there'a more than one of the usual prejudicial factors present. That is, it could be okay to have a friend who was gay, or black, or positive, for your average middle-class white kid, but not more than one, and certainly not all three. My brother's partner is black, and I know he's had experiences because of that that my brother will never have.

Someone needs to teach America about the difference between race and ethnicity. Also someone needs to point out that both race and ethnicity are defined by the USA census bureau in a very arbitrary manner, which in turn defines these categories for the the MSM. Just ask a hispanic from Peru if he feels he is the same ethnicity as a Hispanic from Pureto Rico.

yeah, I think the real problem with girl was it's use of a dimunitive by 30 year old middle managers in referring their 60 year old secretaries. Since that usage has faded I think the term is less intrinsically offensive, though certainly not always appropriate...

I had a very intelligent and well-liked colleague at a biothech company I was working at some years ago use the term "Afro-engineering". He seemed to think he was mighty clever. I was not terribly amused, but didn't really feel like I was in a position to say anything about it. Part of the issue of racism is our own failure to acknowledge Whiteness. It brings privledge, such as being less likely to be "randomly" stopped by the police, followed by a store clerk, have car doors suddenly locked when we are around, etc. etc.
Just the recognition that as whites we have this privledge is a big step to undoing racism. Recognize it, think about it.
Racism does not always mean bigotry and prejudice. More often for most progressives its simply the state of NOT recognizing that we live in a society in which race creates barriers. Unless we are intentionally doing something to undo the situation we are contributing to it. Americans are defacto racists in that we benefit from the social structure that gives whites an advantage (no matter of what size) over non-white.
Ok I'm a racist, I benefit. I see that I try to deal with it, I'm willing to talk about it, I'm willing to change, but I'll likely always be a racist. No I'm not a bigot. I'm not a cnadidate for White Power or the KKK... I'm a white american thats all.

Pakistan's Information Minister Sheikh Rashid says he was head of the group's international operations.

referring to grown women as "girls" somehow seems acceptable again.....Entre nous may be as may be - from a 30 year old male? Not so much.
I think the contextual dependence there is more than just the gender of who's talking. When my wife leaves me with our son to go drinking with some of her female friends and I say "So it's a girls' night out, then?" I am 100% certain that no offense is taken, any more than if she were referring to a "boys' night out" in the converse situation.
I think just about anybody could readily think of quite a few similar situations where the diminutive gender term is nothing more than an endearment and is as such completely non-toxic. It hearkens much more to the days of gender-segregated school cliques than to patriarchal institutions.
Obviously there are also quite a few contexts -- notably professional situations -- where there is no place for approaching this line, but you can't just say that "girls" used to refer to a group of grown women is always bad coming out of the mouth of a grown man. That is an overgeneralization.

the nice thing about rational beings is the ability to be, well, rational. making a humorous observation about obvious differences in generalities isn't the same as forming a lynch mob. the trick is simply to recognize the difference and treat people equally. not identically, equally.
and that means more than just let them live next door without burning a menora in their front yard.

President Bush said Friday that the future of the U.S. economy is "as bright as it's been in a long time," but U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., promptly issued a statement that Bush might be forgetting something.
Mississippi.
Lott urged Bush "not to leave Mississippi behind in the nation's recovery," and recalled Bush's promise to South Mississippians on his first visit after Katrina on Sept. 2.
"The president said, 'The good news is - and it's hard for some to see it now - that out of this chaos is going to come a fantastic Gulf Coast, like it was before. My attitude is, if it's not going exactly right, we're going to make it go exactly right. If there's problems, we're going to address the problems," Lott quoted Bush.
Lott said, "Mr. President, the recovery is not going exactly right. Three months after Katrina, 42 percent of the travel trailers required for those still homeless have not been delivered by FEMA. Winter is coming to Mississippi, and too many people are still living in tents or carports. Three months after the hurricane, only an estimated one-quarter of the storm's debris has been removed in most areas, and too many neighborhoods have had none removed."
snip
"This economy is in good shape," Bush said with a smile.
I think you're right. "You go, mature woman" doesn't quite have the same ring as "You go, girl."

An oldie but a goodie, via my brother in Japan:
A Letter to the Red States
We've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we're taking the other Blue States with us.
In case you aren't aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast.
We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to the people of the new country of New California.
To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.
We get stem cell research and the best beaches.
We get Elliot Spitzer. You get Ken Lay.
We get the Statue of Liberty. You get Dollywood.
We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.
We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss.
We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You
get Alabama.
We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red states
pay their fair share.
Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a bunch of single moms.
Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and anti-war, and we're going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have kids they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for no purpose, and they don't care if you don't show pictures of their children's caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq, and hope that the WMDs turn up, but we're not willing to spend our resources in Bush's Quagmire.
With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent of the country's fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 95 percent of America's quality wines (you can serve French wines at state dinners), 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools, plus Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.
With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88 percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia. We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.
Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred unless we're discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44 percent say that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved in 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazy bastards believe you are people with higher morals then we lefties.
By the way, we're taking the good pot, too. You can have that dirt weed they grow in Mexico.

Al-Qaida has denied claims made by President Pervez Musharraf that one of their operatives has died in an explosion in a northwestern Pakistan tribal area.
Musharraf, arriving in Kuwait at the start of a three-nation visit to the Middle East, said on Saturday that Hamza Rabia was among five people killed in an explosion on Thursday in North Waziristan, a tribal region bordering Afghanistan.
"Yes, indeed, 200% confirmed," Musharraf said.
But Dubai-based satellite TV channel Al-Arabiya said on Saturday that it had been contacted by a person claiming to be from al-Qaida who denied that Rabia had been killed.

As you know, I got a kitty this year. Cosmo. He's the coolest. I'm a little concerned about the fact that my friend is delivering a couple of poinsettias to me this afternoon. I know they can be toxic. Does anyone know if they are toxic to kitties? Because Cos will surely try to munch on it.

Jury-rigged is derived through Old French ajurie (relief) from Latin -- adjuditare, meaning to help. According to my Webster's Unabridged.

If your kitten is a plant nibbler then remove any plants which may be poisonous, for example Dieffenbachia (dumb cane), Poinsettia, Lily of the Valley, Christmas Cherry, Castor Oil plant, Avocado plant, rubber plant and ivy. Most cats will not touch such plants but kittens may be more inquisitive.

"And so it begins: the rush of fervent hawks -- the same ones who promised to "stay the course," constantly moved the goalposts for declaring success, accused Jack Murtha of getting his ideas from Michael Moore, and attacked antiwar critics as unpatriotic -- to disingenuously claim that they always were reluctant about the war and that substantial troop reductions in 2006 were their idea all along.
This sort of revisionism is not new. Once WWII was over, no German ever admitted supporting Adolf Hitler or the war"

kittie kept jumping on our waterbed when she was young, making just the tiniest little slices so one didn't notice until waking up in wet sheets the next morning.
but i don't think vaporub would have been a good idea. talk about sliding out of bed in the morning!
our solution: keep the door closed (not 100% effective) and wait until she got very old.

CARACAS (AFP) - An opposition boycott of Sunday's legislative elections has moved President Hugo Chavez closer to locking in an overwhelming majority in the National Assembly, which could extend the increasingly influential leftist's time in power.
The small New Era party on Friday pulled out of the voting, joining the center-right Justice First, the centrist Democratic Action, Christian democratic Copei and center-right Project Venezuela. Between them the five parties have 45 seats in the legislature.
Opposition parties are protesting the use of electronic voting machines, which they say can record fingerprints so authorities can check how a person voted. They also charge the electoral council is stacked with supporters of the charismatic and outspoken president, a fierce critic of the US government.

Iraq's most influential Shia figure, Grand Ayat Allah Ali al-Sistani, has told believers to vote in elections on 15 December, urging them to support religious candidates.
The instructions from al-Sistani, a reclusive spiritual figure with a strong influence among the Shia, fall short of a religious edict, but still carry tremendous weight.
It could dent the hopes of Iyad Allawi, a former prime minister whose secular Shia non-sectarian party is mounting a challenge to the ruling coalition.
A representative in al-Sistani's office on Saturday said he instructed followers to do three things: turn out to vote on the day; avoid voting for any list whose leader is not religious; and avoid voting for "weak" lists so as not to split the Shia vote.

BEIJING (AFP) - Sixteen workers were killed and 42 others remained trapped in two separate coal mine accidents in China, state media has reported, as the toll from a massive mine blast in the northeast rose to 169.
In the light of the disasters, a senior mine safety official Saturday ordered thousands of small, unsafe mines to close in the next three years.
The accidents were the latest disasters to strike China's mines, which are considered the most dangerous in the world, especially in recent years as demand for raw materials has escalated to help fuel rapid economic growth.
Rescuers on Saturday were trying to reach the 42 workers trapped in a flooded mine in central Henan province.

That is silly. Whether you are tired of it or not, it is true.
I spend a significant portion of my life explaining the origins of prejudice and how, if you understand it, it ceases to be a problem.
Yes, we are all guilty of it: it is sort of endemic. But if you understand your mind, then you can act to counteract the effects.
Ignorance is believing that you are above such feelings and that leads to serious racism.

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Tony Blair is offering to cut up to 1 billion pounds a year from Britain's rebate on its European Union contributions as part of efforts to secure an EU budget deal, newspapers said on Saturday.
Britain has been under pressure to accept a rebate cut to pave the way for a budget deal at a mid-December summit, which diplomats say is vital to restoring confidence after a string of setbacks for the EU.
The Guardian said Blair's offer was to cut 1 billion pounds a year from Britain's EU rebate, while the Financial Times said Britain was offering to cut the rebate by 6-9 billion euros (4-6 billion pounds) between 2007 and 2013.

hey, look before you leap there. just 'cause it's cliche doesn't mean its not true.
all i mean by it is that there are differences between people, and on a large scale they sometimes follow patterns by race, gender, cultural upbringing. everyone notices them, and it is dishonest to pretend e don't. it's the only thing that keeps a lot of stand up comics in business.
so to the extent we recognize them, we are a little bit racist.
to the extent we let perceived trending in a large population affect the way we treat individuals, we are inexcusable bigots.

Ooh Vicki, I just thought of something. Here in Dallas, for some reason, upside down Christmas trees are suddenly popular. You hang em upside down - looks stupid, but for some reason, people are doing it.
Might keep the cat from being able to knock it over.

How about a marching band? Or would that be out of place at a football game? All the kids loved Drumline.

PETA would not have a cow; it is forbidden by its bylaws.
It might, however, have a cowfurky.

The Stones are a Motown review.
Tim Finnegan
not sure i'd go THAT far. at least, not their early days.
but i still recommend the C's, that's sort of the premise. Lower middle class Irish lads start an Irish band, covering tunes like "Chain Of Fools", "Mustang Sally", lots more.

Oh man, it must be true if it's 200%! confirmed!
That's twice the bullshit!

this reminds me of the pie fight when kossians refused to acknowledge the tbs blogad was sexist. it got so that defending that stupid ad became more important than respecting the alliance between fellow liberals.

i cop to my 'isms all the time. lookism and ageism for starters. acknowledging your biases helps you to sort them out and manage them.

Let me get this straight.
Someone insults me.
And I'M supposed to apologize to HIM??
No thank you, I'd rather deal with African-Americans as adults, not as special ed children to be humored.

You'd better be defensive when someone accuses you of racism. This country has an adversarial system of law, and that applies to all other areas of life. If you admit guilt, you'll face punishment. Accusations like that can destroy your reputation, your career and your life. Fight them tooth and nail.

Bint is entirely uncalled for.
"Bint" means "daughter". Short for "bint gamel" ("daughter of a camel"). It really doesn't have sexual connotations, despite it's passing similarity to a certain other word. It's just an exotic form of "bitch".
