Just saw this footage on French TV and wondered why it wasn't mentioned in US --
BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Al Jazeera television Saturday broadcast a videotape from the Islamic Army of Iraq showing a huge explosion against a U.S. foot patrol near Fallujah although it didn't explicitly link it to the attack that killed 10 Marines.
The al Jazeera announcer, however, noted the 10 Marine deaths Thursday near Fallujah as the tape aired.
The tape showed ground troops walking down a street on both sides of a Humvee when a huge fireball engulfed the scene, sending terrified Iraqi bystanders scrambling for their lives.
Al Jazeera said the Islamic Army also claimed responsibility for a series of other attacks against U.S. forces north of Baghdad, in Nasiriyah and another in Fallujah.
The ambush against the Marines from Regimental Combat Team 8 occurred Thursday outside Fallujah, the former insurgent bastion overrun by U.S. forces in November 2004. The Marine unit, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, has suffered some of the highest casualties of the Iraq war.
The U.S. command didn't release many details of the attack, but a witness said it occurred near a mill in the village of Amiriyat al Fallujah, just outside the city.
"More than 20 troops entered there and a huge explosion happened," said Mohsen Mohammed. "Afterward, the helicopters and tanks arrived in the area."
CBS News reported Friday night the troops entered the area in response to a tip but the tip may have been a set up.
In another video, also aired by al Jazeera, a group calling itself the Mujahedeen of Tal Afar claimed responsibility for destroying an American Bradley Fighting Vehicle as it passed in a sandy road in the northern city. The video showed that the bomb exploded under the Bradley but al Jazeera said it wasn't clear whether the footage were authentic.

Just got back from having a meal with a group of folks I've worked with in a volunteer capacity for
the last twelve years. One couple brought along a guy who used to work with us. His kid went to school with my older kids, so of course I asked after his son. He said his son had graduated the U of Michigan with a degree in poly sci and was working in the home office of some Congressman from Michigan. He proudly told me his son had met Tom DeLay. My reply was "I hope he washed his hands real good after that."
The Dem couple in the group started to laugh; a dear friend, Republican but not hopelessely so, blanched, and from the look on his face, I'd say the man in question immediately took me off his Xmas card list.

well, i still don't entirely like dean, i hated him as a canidate (he would have been savaged) i don't know what the term would have been, but swift boating would not have covered it.

Just finished watching C-Span's book program in which Mary Mapes - the CBS reporter behind W's failure to fulfill his guard service story - was interviewed about her upcoming book by Brent Bozell (the head of a RW media monitoring organization).
Fascinating interview in several respects: 1) Conservative writers, on the program, get mushy interviews where their points are not dissected full throttle, whereas Mapes' perspective was attacked piece by piece throughout the entire interview 2) Mapes has come to the realization (just like many of us) that there is a coherent right wing apparatus that goes after anyone that stands in their way

Bozell is a nutcase, so this is amazing even for C-Span. Bozell is revealed in all his craziness in David Brock's excellent book The Republican Noise Machine as is this entire right wing apparatus that was long in the making.
JT: I've seen this several times on C-Span's weekend book segment: conservative writers get pleasant, temperate interviewers who seem mushy liberals & ask polite questions while liberal authors, or those who write critically of right wing schenanigans, get these obnoxious, bulldog right wingers interviewing them. There's definitely a pattern here.
