Paul last saw the Gulfstream V about 18 months ago. He comes down to Glasgow airport's planespotters' club most days. He had not seen the plane before so he marked the serial number down in his book. At the time, he did not think there was anything unusual about the Gulfstream being ushered to a stand away from public view, one that could not be seen from the airport terminal or the club's prime view.

WASHINGTON - Despite a modest decline in hostility toward the United States, opinion in the Arab world appears to have hardened over the past year, according to the latest in an annual series of surveys of six Arab countries released here Wednesday by the Arab American Institute (AAI).
That hardening appears due primarily to continued Arab opposition to the war in Iraq and to perceptions of U.S. treatment of Arabs and Muslims – the two most important factors in shaping Arab views of the U.S., according to the survey, which was carried out by the Zogby International polling firm in the latter half of October.
By contrast, President George W. Bush's efforts to persuade the Arab world that Washington promotes democratic reform in their countries has made hardly a dent in the views of the vast majority of Arabs, with the exception of Christians in Lebanon, according to the poll's designer, AAI president, James Zogby.
Besides Lebanon, the survey was carried out in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
"In Egypt and Saudi Arabia, the two countries where the U.S. has focused its democracy message, the effort appeared to backfire," according to Zogby. "Of the 4 percent in Egypt and 9 percent in Saudi Arabia who said that 'President Bush's promotion of democracy and reform' was the most important factor determining their attitudes toward the U.S., over 80 percent said this effort worsened their view of the U.S."
Views of China were far more favorable, particularly in Egypt, Jordan and Morocco, where majorities expressed positive views of Beijing. India was also viewed significantly more favorably than the United States. Even Russia received more favorable ratings, except in Morocco and the UAE.

The CIA operated two secret "black sites" for terrorism suspects in Poland, the main European location for the clandestine operation, according to a Polish press report yesterday.

Michael Todd, chief constable of Greater Manchester, is to pursue allegations that CIA planes, known to have landed in Britain, carried terrorist suspects "rendered" to secret interrogation centres elsewhere.

Mr Todd, who is the member of the Association of Chief Police Officers' terrorism committee responsible for aviation, is to meet Shami Chakrabarti, director of the human rights group, for what his spokesman called "an initial exploration of the issues Liberty have raised".

GravatarOh, QL, I do that occasionally. The problem with having a blog is that it NEEDS things.

About ten years ago or so I had a blog. Course they were not called "Blogs" then. Just personal web pages.

My friend and I did a political satire page. It was pretty good. In many ways superior to most everything out there. We received some nice accolades: One from the Los Angeles Times. Best of the Web from a rating company and stuff. But the pressure of updating just got to the two of us. It would seem that we would do it, then it needed doing again and again.

So, if I have something that is needing to be said, I just say it here. Easier and prolly better.

But, and this is an important difference, many conservatives are as sickened as we are by the corruption and the obvious complicity of the government in lying.

Somehow the doctrines of Conservatism: self- reliance, strong moral views, and responsibility in using the people's money have simply been forgotten.

I do not consider George Bush and his ilk Conservatives. I believe that they are something quite different: radical corporatalists. They have no beliefs other than grabbing as much money as they can for themselves and their friends.

I work with two young men, both of whom are very smart, one of whom is probably going to go places. They are extremely well educated and keep up-to-date with current affairs. Both have moms my age who are as passionately opposed to this regime as I am. One has a f-i-l who protests in the town square every single week. F-i-l is "somebody" in the community but he still winds up mostly on his own. He wrote a terrific piece for his local rag and they printed it. He is happy that more people are honking in support. But still he is mostly on his own.

All that being said, neither of these young men are as concerned as their parents or I. Neither will put a foot forward and possibly risk their careers. Both treat me a tad condescendingly. Until we get them, it will continue.

I agree with you too. The "conservatism" we see today are nothing like "conservatism classic." That said, we are a two party country. The only way to get rid of the Republicans is to elect Democrats. To this end we have to unite around candidates and plan for the long term.

Finding and developing canditates: We Democrats have not done enough to groom young people for governing. Our candidate pipeline is pretty empty.

Rebuilding the Democratic party: From the bottom up. This is how the Republicans did it.

DLC: Either clean house or get rid of it. At the very least, neutralize it.

Howard Dean: Let him lead. He has great ideas and a proven track record as a leader.

What we can't do is wait for a candidate that meets our purity standards.

While I respect a number of Dems, and really like the Underthirtygang in Congress, it would be good to see them putting together a powerful legislative package to push - even knowing the powers of rethuggery will not let it be even considered in Congress. But maybe it's best not to get too much of a target for the rethugs to gather together defenses against. They're pretty well established as corporate world darlings. I don't say corporate America since that group doesn't seem to have this country as its main allegiance.

If I were writing something, this is the perfect time: but I am not. Just waiting for the book to be done. (I do have to say that holding the finished book in your hands is a feeling that is hard to describe. Good, of course, but even more importantly it gives just a little glimpse of immortality and that is a nice feeling.

GravatarLast night I watched a movie on television that took place in Amsterdam. It brought back some memories of the times I spent there. All I could think about was I wish I could march couple of my fundie neighbor females (and their idiot husbands) down the streets where the ladies are displaying their wares legally in the front windows with the red lights. It has been forty years since I saw the ladies and what I have learned in the interim is how warm I can feel about a country who tolerates the humanness of it populace--from its toleration of some drug use to the ladies of the night where as in this bastard country we just lock everybody the fuck up and make their lives even more intolerable.

I had oportunity to drive through a neighboring suburb which is the county seat yesterday. I don't know how many "street" people I saw dragging their carts and boxes down the street after a rather large snow trying to look respectable and normal and pretend that nobody will notice. I could only imagine where they spent the cold night. It breaks my heart. My country is broken.

GravatarMark Warner was not at all a bad governor. He did inherit a train wreck, and he stabilized the state economy, and managed the VERY difficult task of actually getting laws put into place in spite of a horrendous "good ol' boy" network of (mostly Republican) state legislators.

Gravatarjdw, you're right -- he's not increidibly charismatic. But that may work to his advantage in some instances. He's not really stiff and uncomfortable like Kerry, either. He's just sort of non-glamorous. And he did get another Dem elected in this oh-so-red state of mine.

Though most of the last dozen or so of Virginia's governors have been dems.

One reason I like him is he really seemed to endorse his successor, whom I really do like. Tim Kaine handled most of his gubernatorial campaign with grace and aplomb (though there was some flap about sending out misleading mailings?). Mark Warner campaigned vigorously for Kaine, against a very popular opponent.

By the way, in an amazingly short-sighted law the the VA asembly refuses to change, Virginia governors can only serve one 4-year term.

GOP Faction Wants to Change 'Birthright Citizenship' Policy

WASHINGTON — For nearly 140 years, any child born on U.S. soil, even to an illegal immigrant, has been given American citizenship. Now, some conservatives in Congress are determined to change that.

A group of 92 lawmakers in the House will attempt next week to force a vote on legislation that would revoke the principle of "birthright citizenship," part of a broader effort to discourage illegal immigration.

The push to change the citizenship policy is backed by some conservative activists and academics. But it could cause problems for the White House and the Republican Party, which have been courting Latino voters. GOP officials fear the effort to eliminate birthright citizenship will alienate a key constituency, even if the legislation ultimately is rejected by Congress or the courts.

The principle at issue rests on the first sentence of the 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868 to guarantee the rights of emancipated slaves: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside."

Some lawmakers advocating tougher immigration laws contend that the amendment has been misinterpreted for decades. Conservatives maintain that although illegal immigrants are subject to criminal prosecution and are expected to abide by U.S. laws and regulations, they are not "subject to the jurisdiction" of the United States in the full sense intended by the amendment's authors — and their children therefore fall outside the scope of its protection.

Those who want to change the interpretation acknowledge that illegal immigration is largely driven by the hunger for jobs at U.S. wages. But they also say that for some immigrants, automatic citizenship provides another compelling incentive to cross the border. They note that the United States is one of few major industrialized nations that grant birthright citizenship with no qualifications.

"Illegal immigrants are coming for many different reasons," said Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), one of the lawmakers pushing for the House measure. "Some are coming for jobs. Some are coming to give birth. Some are coming to commit crimes. Addressing this problem is needed if we're going to try to combat illegal immigration on all fronts."

But the proposal may rankle Latino voters.

That's certainly true. The decline in voting over the last 30 years is shameful.

Still, it can be overcome. Al Franken did a show from UM-Duluth and he had a couple of students from MPIRG on who did some serious work registering and promoting voting among the college students.

The results in the 2004 election was that 85% of that campus voted.

Massive work on getting out the vote might turn things around.
