Military's Information War Is Vast and Often Secretive
By JEFF GERTH
Published: December 11, 2005
In state of the art studios, producers prepare the daily mix of music and news for the group's radio stations or spots for friendly television outlets. Writers putting out newspapers and magazines in Baghdad and Kabul converse via teleconferences. Mobile trailers with high-tech gear are parked outside, ready for the next crisis.
The center is not part of a news organization, but a military operation, and those writers and producers are soldiers. The 1,200-strong psychological operations unit based at Fort Bragg turns out what its officers call "truthful messages" to support the United States government's objectives, though its commander acknowledges that those stories are one-sided and their American sponsorship is hidden...

Has anyone seen aeon flux or The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe yet? Any recommendations?
The few reviews I've seen so far of TLTW&TW have been mildly positive. I'm usually alone in New York on Christmas Day, so I've gotten into the habit of going to see a movie (I prefer to go back home to visit on Thanksgiving, since any sane person would rather be in Chicago in late November than late December). I saw the three LOTR movies on Christmas 2001-03, and the Lemony Snicket movie last year, and this year I'm leaning towards seeing the Narnia movie. Loved the books as a kid, but I'm worrying that the fundies will try to turn the film into the kids' version of "The Passion of the Christ".

THE MAPLE TREE by Eugene McCarthy
The maple tree that night
Without a wind or rain
Let go its leaves
Because its time had come.
Brown veined, spotted,
Like old hands, fluttering in blessing,
They fell upon my head
And shoulders, and then
Down to the quiet at my feet.
I stood, and stood
Until the tree was bare
And have told no one
But you that I was there.

WASHINGTON - Former Minnesota Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy, whose insurgent campaign toppled a sitting president in 1968 and forced the Democratic Party to take seriously his message against the Vietnam War, died Saturday. He was 89.
McCarthy died in his sleep at assisted living home in the Georgetown neighborhood where he had lived for the past few years, said his son, Michael.
Eugene McCarthy challenged President Lyndon B. Johnson for the 1968 Democratic nomination during growing debate over the Vietnam War. The challenge led to Johnson's withdrawal from the race.
The former college professor, who ran for president five times in all, was in some ways an atypical politician, a man with a witty, erudite speaking style who wrote poetry in his spare time and was the author of several books.
"He was thoughtful and he was principled and he was compassionate and he had a good sense of humor," his son said.
When Eugene McCarthy ran for president in 1992, he explained his decision to leave the seclusion of his home in rural Woodville, Va., for the campaign trail by quoting Plutarch, the ancient Greek historian: "They are wrong who think that politics is like an ocean voyage or military campaign, something to be done with some particular end in view."
McCarthy got less than 1 percent of the vote in 1992 in New Hampshire, the state where he helped change history 24 years earlier.
Helped by his legion of idealistic young volunteers known as "clean-for-Gene kids," McCarthy got 42 percent of the vote in the state's 1968 Democratic primary. That showing embarrassed Johnson into withdrawing from the race and throwing his support to his vice president, Hubert H. Humphrey.
Sen. Robert Kennedy of New York also decided to seek the nomination, but was assassinated in June 1968. McCarthy and his followers went to the party convention in Chicago, where fellow Minnesotan Humphrey won the nomination amid bitter strife both on the convention floor and in the streets.
Humphrey went on to narrowly lose the general election to Richard Nixon. The racial, social and political tensions within the Democratic Party in 1968 have continued to affect presidential politics ever since.
"It was a tragic year for the Democratic Party and for responsible politics, in a way," McCarthy said in a 1988 interview.
"There were already forces at work that might have torn the party apart anyway _ the growing women's movement, the growing demands for greater racial equality, an inability to incorporate all the demands of a new generation.
"But in 1968, the party became a kind of unrelated bloc of factions ... each refusing accommodation with another, each wanting control at the expense of all the others."
Although he supported the Korean War, McCarthy said he opposed the Vietnam War because "as it went on, you could tell the people running it didn't know what was going on."

Yet another proof that rendition and torture work so well:
The basis for the Assclown Posse's claim that Iraq was giving al Queda training in WMD's and support was from the confessions al-Libbi gave after being turned over to the Egyptians by the CIA. Once back in US custody, he recanted. Did that stop LBG, Rummy, et al from using it, nooooooo.

More on Senator McCarthy:
In recent years, McCarthy was critical of campaign finance reform, winning him an unlikely award from the Conservative Political Action Conference in 2000.
In an interview when he got the award, McCarthy said that money helped him in the 1968 race. "We had a few big contributors," he said. "And that's true of any liberal movement. In the American Revolution, they didn't get matching funds from George III."
After the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, McCarthy said the United States was partly to blame for ignoring the plight of Palestinians.
"You let a thing like that fester for 45 years, you have to expect something like this to happen," he said in an interview at the time. "No one at the White House has shown any concern for the Palestinians."
In a 2004 biography, "Eugene McCarthy: The Rise and Fall of Postwar American Liberalism," British historian Dominic Sandbrook painted an unflattering portrait of McCarthy, calling him lazy and jealous, among other things. McCarthy, Sandbrook wrote, "willfully courted the reputation of frivolous maverick."
In McCarthy's 1998 book, "No-Fault Politics," editor Keith C. Burris described McCarthy in the introduction as "a Catholic committed to social justice but a skeptic about reform, about do-gooders, about the power of the state and the competence of government, and about the liberal reliance upon material cures for social problems."
McCarthy was born March 29, 1916, in Watkins, a central Minnesota town of about 750. He earned degrees from St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn., and the University of Minnesota.
He was a teacher, a civilian War Department employee and college economics and sociology instructor before turning to politics. He once spent a year in a monastery.
He was elected to the House in 1948. Ten years later he was elected to the Senate and re-elected in 1964. McCarthy left the Senate in 1970 and devoted much of his time to writing poetry, essays and books.
With a sardonic sense of humor, McCarthy needled whatever establishment was in power. In 1980 he endorsed Republican Ronald Reagan with the argument that anyone was better than incumbent Jimmy Carter, a Democrat.
On his 85th birthday in 2001, McCarthy told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis that President Bush was an amateur and said he could not even bear to watch his inauguration.
In an interview a month before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, McCarthy compared the Bush administration with the characters in the William Golding novel "Lord of the Flies," in which a group of boys stranded on an island turn to savagery.
"The bullies are running it," McCarthy said. "Bush is bullying everything."
McCarthy was an advocate for a third-party movement, arguing there was no real difference between Republicans and Democrats.

i loved reading the narnia books when i was young. not being raised in a xtian house, a lot of the religious stuff went right over me with no impact. my favorite was always "the voyage of the dawn treader."
but i still remember reading "the last battle." tirian and the children have decided to pretend to be people from the southern country. they stain themselves with berries to affect the skin color. tirian says to children at one point, "and then we can wash this off and become proper white narnians again."
my feelings were really hurt.

The last part of the McCarthy piece:
In 2000, he wrote a political satire called "An American Bestiary," illustrated by Chris Millis, in which high-level advisers are portrayed as park pigeons _ "they strut and waddle" _ and reporters are compared with black birds who flock together.
He blamed the media for deciding who is and is not a serious candidate and suggested he should have kept his 1992 candidacy a secret, since announcing it publicly did no good.
McCarthy also ran for president in 1972, 1976 and 1988.
For McCarthy, the 1950s and 1960s were the Democratic Party's high points because it pushed the Civil Rights Act through Congress and championed national health insurance programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.
"I think he probably would consider his work in civil rights legislation in the 1960s to be his greatest contribution," his son said Saturday.
The bad times, Eugene McCarthy said, began with America's increased involvement in the Vietnam War and the simultaneous failure of some of Johnson's Great Society social programs.
Instead of giving people a chance to earn a living, McCarthy said, the Great Society "became affirmative action and more welfare. It was an admission the New Deal had failed or fallen."
In recent years McCarthy had lived at Georgetown Retirement Residence, an assisted living center in Washington. He and his wife, Abigail, separated after the 1968 election. She died in 2001.
Survivors include daughters Ellen and Margaret and six grandchildren, Michael McCarthy said.
A private burial is planned for next week and a memorial service in Washington will be scheduled, Michael McCarthy said.

but i still remember reading "the last battle." tirian and the children have decided to pretend to be people from the southern country. they stain themselves with berries to affect the skin color. tirian says to children at one point, "and then we can wash this off and become proper white narnians again."

It’s still swingtime for Dave Brubeck
By CHARLES J. GANS
The Associated Press
Dave Brubeck chose not to celebrate his 85th birthday quietly at his home in the Connecticut woods. Instead, his wife, children and grandchildren joined him for a sold-out concert at London’s Barbican Centre, where 2,000 fans serenaded him with a rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday,” accompanied by members of his jazz quartet and the London Symphony Orchestra.
The jazz legend, who was feted at the close of the Tuesday concert with a piano-shaped cake, could easily rest on the laurels of a storied career that has made him one of America’s most honored musicians. But he still performs 60 to 70 dates a year, mostly with his quartet, whose musical skills have reinvigorated him...

So drop it: Lovecraft was warped by a creepy bucolic New England grave life and an abusive mother, but once he got away and saw the world a bit he cleared right up. It was he who introduced interracial empathy into a science fiction then still very much in the grip of "racial realities" with his echidnodermic Old Ones. There's a huge difference between the Lovecrafts before and after that whole marrying a Jewess and rethinking his former presuppositions thing, and what really counts is that he came out of it within his time: the "time product" argument is pedantic, misleading and wrong.

"There were already forces at work that might have torn the party apart anyway - the growing women's movement, the growing demands for greater racial equality, an inability to incorporate all the demands of a new generation.
"But in 1968, the party became a kind of unrelated bloc of factions ... each refusing accommodation with another, each wanting control at the expense of all the others."

For those of us who actually, for a few moments, thought we could vote for a brilliant, honorable, thoroughly decent man for president during scoundrel times, McCarthy will always be what you suggest: the conscience of a polity. Pathbreaking Comedian Richard Pryor Dies

(12-10) 14:04 PST Los Angeles (AP) --
Richard Pryor, the caustic yet perceptive actor-comedian who lived dangerously close to the edge both on stage and off, died Saturday. He was 65.
Pryor died shortly before 8 a.m. of a heart attack after being taken to a hospital from his home in the San Fernando Valley, said his business manager, Karen Finch. He had been ill for years with multiple sclerosis, a degenerative disease of the nervous system.
"He did not suffer, he went quickly and at the end there was a smile on his face," his wife, Jennifer Pryor, said. "I'm honored now that I have an opportunity to protect and continue his legacy because he's a very, very, very amazing man and he opened doors to so many people."

One of the famous lines arising out of the so-called Fabulous Fifties was that 'politics stops at the water's edge' so that we could have a bipartisan foreign policy. Never understood myself how a democracy could thrive without an opposition--a thought that, believe it or not, recurs from time to time--but those who mistakenly perceived the communist threat as monolithic wanted us to project an 'equally' monolithic strength in response, thus mirroring the behavior of our enemy. Times sure have changed...

Army researchers saw alcohol misuse rise from 13 percent among soldiers to 21 percent one year after returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, underscoring the continuing stress of deployment for some troops.
In post-deployment reassessment data completed in July, researchers also saw soldiers with anger and aggression issues increase from 11 percent to 22 percent after deployment. Those planning to divorce their spouse rose from 9 percent to 15 percent after time spent in the combat zone.
And that’s just the start of the problems, according to military family support groups.
“At the end of the day, wounded servicemembers have wounded families,” said Joyce Wessel Raezer, government relations director for the National Military Family Association.

The opportunity to build a more stable and democratic Iraq, made possible by our stunning military victory, is now in jeopardy. We're seeing surprisingly fierce resistance to coalition forces and to our efforts to remake the country. But another kind of resistance is proving nearly as dangerous to our long-term security: the Bush administration’s stubborn refusal to change course and build a safer postwar Iraq in partnership with the world.
…
This is a time for firm resolve and clear thinking, not overheated dialogue. What our troops need from their leaders are real tools to fight their real enemies — not taunts inviting more attacks. The president’s “bring ‘em on” challenge, beyond being unpresidential, was unproductive. He shouldn’t focus on getting a rise out of the insurgents but on getting the insurgents out of Iraq.

From Harold Pinter's Nobel Speech on Receiving the Prize in Literature:
"I know that President Bush has many extremely competent speech writers but I would like to volunteer for the job myself. I propose the following short address which he can make on television to the nation. I see him grave, hair carefully combed, serious, winning, sincere, often beguiling, sometimes employing a wry smile, curiously attractive, a man's man.
'God is good. God is great. God is good. My God is good. Bin Laden's God is bad. His is a bad God. Saddam's God was bad, except he didn't have one. He was a barbarian. We are not barbarians. We don't chop people's heads off. We believe in freedom. So does God. I am not a barbarian. I am the democratically elected leader of a freedom-loving democracy. We are a compassionate society. We give compassionate electrocution and compassionate lethal injection. We are a great nation. I am not a dictator. He is. I am not a barbarian. He is. And he is. They all are. I possess moral authority. You see this fist? This is my moral authority. And don't you forget it.'"

Anyways Scoop's wargames scenarios and plannings were what we used for Iraq.
Since it was assumed the Moslems would welcome us with flowers to oppose the atheistic Soviet, there was never an 'occupation' stage for the interior, outside of air bases and camps to establish a secure pipeline trail to Lebanon along the Syrian border and control of the southern oil zones.
Sunni and Shi'ia were to be used as a buffer zone against Iran or the Russians to the north, either easily inflamed at the drop of a match and both sunject to infiltration with sympathetic help, see also Chalabi...
The best evidence of this is the fact that my nephew's guard unit worked with the Russian navy to help secure infrastructure in Iraq. The Yukos concessions were up at said time...
In fact they probably had plans to cede many of the northern oil to Russia to facilitate continued ongoing war unless the Turkish perimeter was threatened in their original conventional war plans.
Ongoing war is the plan, after all.
The deterrence of nuclear retaliation meant the other side would only deal with conventional terms, a strength of its military in the East.

67% off topic (one participant was discussed upthread):
There was once a meeting in an Oxford pub called the Eastgate. Two founders of the British Interplanetary Society, one of them being Arthur C. Clarke, met with two opponents of human space travel to debate the topic.
C. S. Lewis--who had spoken ill in Perelandra of "little rocket societies" that in his view merely wanted to spread the crimes of humanity to other planets--was the principal of this side. He brought as his second one J. R. R. Tolkien.
At the "rather unsteady" conclusion of the evening's discussion, which is tragically unrecorded but neither side persuaded the other to its cause, Lewis said "I'm sure you're very wicked people, but how dull it would be if everyone was good."
(Incident recorded by Clarke in the essay "Memoirs of an Armchair Astronaut (Retired)" collected in Voices from the Sky, 1965)

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Poland's prime minister said Saturday he has ordered an investigation into whether the CIA ran secret prisons for terror suspects in the country - an allegation the government repeatedly has denied.
Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz said a ``detailed'' probe would be conducted to ``check if there is any proof that such an event took place in our country. It is necessary to finally close the issue because it could be dangerous to Poland.''
...
Washington continued its policy of not confirming the existence of any prisons, and declined to offer an opinion about Marcinkiewicz's announcement.
``I'm not going to get into the right of a sovereign country to conduct an investigation on its own territory,'' said Frederick Jones, spokesman for the White House's National Security Council. ``That's their right.''
Poland's outgoing President Aleksander Kwasniewski reiterated this week that ``there are no such prisons or such prisoners on Polish territory.'' On Nov. 28, he said there ``never have been'' such jails in Poland.
But the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza reported Saturday that Gulfstream airplanes belonging to either the CIA or FBI landed at least five times at the Szczytno-Szymany airport in northeastern Poland since December 2002.

Okay, wildly OT, and apparently not a new story, but it's new to me and I think it is very very cool:
Declarations of emergency in US border states like Arizona and New Mexico have kicked the immigration debate into high gear.
Artist Judi Werthein has walked smack into the middle of this controversy.
She is hoping to leave her footprint with a special "crossing trainer" she has designed to help illegal immigrants negotiate the sometimes deadly terrain they encounter when crossing the border from Mexico to the US.
Migrants waiting for dark to hop the border fence from Tijuana into San Diego start calling out their shoe sizes when they see the boxes in Werthein's arms.
...
They call the act of crossing the "brinco" - literally "jump" in Spanish. And that is the inspiration for Werthein's crossing shoes, called Brincos.
The trainers are adorned with unusual items.
"The shoe includes a compass, a flashlight because people cross at night, and inside is included also some Tylenol painkillers because many people get injured during crossing," Werthein says.
...
A map - printed on the shoe's removable insole - shows the most popular illegal routes from Tijuana into San Diego.
Completely OT, but I just read Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air, an account of the '96 Everest expedition where Scott Fischer, Rob Hall, and a number of their clients died. If you're familiar at all with the story, you remember that one of the survivors who spent a night exposed on Everest was severly frostbitten and lost a hand, fingers on the other hand, nose, and toes to frostbite. He was Beck Weathers, a Dallas physician.
Here's something I didn't know: Krakauer said that Weathers was a bully conservative, hectoring others with his political opinions, which were essentially just repetitions of Rush Limbaugh's daily screeds.
It turns out that the reason Beck Weathers spent a night in the open was that when he halted his ascent of the mountain, guide Scott Fischer told him to stay where he was, that he would guide him back down on his (Fischer's) descent. Weathers had to stop climbing because the higher he climbed, the worse his eyesight became as a result of his previous RK procedure.
So Weathers waited for Fischer to return (and of course Fischer never did), but in the meantime, numerous climbers passed him on the descent and offered to help him back to camp. Weathers declined all their help because as he put it, he had been told by Fischer to wait for his return.
Now, I'll probably go to hell for this, at the very least it reveals that in a some ways I'm really not a very nice person, but I couldn't help but thinking as I read that, "how typical of a Rushbot - can't make a move without being told what to do by the leader."
In any case, it was a really good book, I highly recommend it.

From the other thread:
If Lieberman can slip into the Sec-Def position now, he'll be in the right spot to accrue all the credit for the victory in Iraq! The glory galore from that glorious victory could sweep him all the way to the Presidency.
Odd, isn't it, that the Repugs might let a Dem slip in there and get all the glory.
It would be even odder if Lieberman's ascension to Sec-Def coincided with the administration finally admitting everything in Iraq is for shit, and putting the blame on him.
But they wouldn't do that, would they? It wouldn't be honorable.
I don't see why other Dems don't trust the Republicans to the extent that Joe does.

Ok.... this is from Investor's Business Daily.
The MSM will not publish it, but goddamn if it ain't true. They know the librule sheeple's won't investigate for themselves:---------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------
Fiscal Policy: A picture is worth a thousand words, and nowhere is that truer than in the debate over supply-side claims that tax cuts lead to higher revenues.
We were struck by a chart that Treasury Secretary John Snow used last week when he presented the administration's case for making the 2003 tax cuts permanent.
For Democrats opposed to the cuts, no argument has been more potent than that tax cuts somehow "cost" the government money — and thus make deficits worse. Snow's chart, shown below, puts the lie to that argument.
In fact, the supply-siders are right: Revenues rise after tax rates are reduced. Federal revenues bottomed at $1.8 trillion just as Bush signed his bill; since then, they've risen 19.4% to $2.15 trillion, an all-time high.
A big reason is that tax avoidance recedes along with rates. When top personal rates are high, the rich find ways to pay less. That's why our tax code is 55,000 pages thick. When rates are lower and flatter, such behavior disappears.
This also explains why the richest Americans' share of all income taxes paid has soared to 34.27% from 19.05% in 1980 even though their average income-tax rate has fallen by roughly a third — from 34.47% to 24.31% in 2003.
More important, however, is the impact tax cuts have on the economy. Since May 2003, when Bush's major plan of tax cuts on both capital and income took effect, the economy has been on a tear. It's virtually impossible to argue the two aren't linked.
In the nine quarters before the tax cuts, GDP grew at an average rate of 1.1%. In the nine quarters since, it's averaged 4.5% — even in the face of punishingly higher interest rates and oil prices.
We also hear how all the tax cuts are going to the "rich." Again, not true. A surge in entrepreneurship, jobs, income and wealth has made all of us richer and more secure.
As Snow noted in his speech Thursday, 57 million Americans now own stocks — or about half of all households. Yet, the median income for shareholders is a very un-Rockefeller-like $65,000.
Many of those investors are retired, and have seen their incomes go up along with dividends. This year, shareholders will deposit or reinvest $201 billion in payouts — up 36% from 2002, the year dividend tax cuts went into effect.
Entrepreneurs are doing well, too. Fed data out Friday showed Americans' net worth is now $51 trillion — about 4.6 times real GDP. What's most impressive is that includes $6.6 trillion of equity in "noncorporate" — or small, entrepreneurial — businesses, up 32% since the start of 2003.
The House passed legislation last week that will trim growth in federal spending by $50 billion but keep mos

What, the White House spin as served up by a right-wing apologist publication? Not exactly the most rock-solid, unimpeachable source, now is it? They seem to overlook any suggestion that the economy was at rock-bottom at the time of the cuts, and growth and revenue had nowhere to go but up.
I especially liked their explanation of why the rich were paying a larger percentage of taxes, which conveniently overlooked the possibility that they might also be sucking in a larger percentage of revenue and wealth...
Did they mention anything about wages for ordinary workers improving, BTW? I think I missed that part.

Lessee ... even accepting, for just a moment, that cutting taxes miraculously does increase tax revenue, we're still tax receipts are still WAYYY below expenditures.
So our only solution, aside from raising taxes, is cutting spending.
But oops! Cutting government spending inhibits economic growth, because government does stuff like hire contractors to build roads!
Like matter and energy, money cannot be created from thin air by simply cutting taxes. It just doesn't work that way.
It's just like increasing the money supply by printing money. That tends to devalue each individual unit of currency, so the total economic value of an economy stays the same.

what am I missing here...did Eli and steve simels actually agree w/the troll...???
the way it's spun--the 'good news' about tax cuts--is fundamentally undermined byt the concommitant--but unspoken, unacknowledged--costs of the deficit.
the scheme it typical of your 'fuck-it-the-world's-ending-and-i aint-got-alla-mine-yet' crowd.
the scenario you present ignores--because it postpones, unto the next generations--the real costs of your fucking boom.
Ah, it's failed chiselmonger Brian Hardig again, under yet another persona.
Sad, sad, sad.

The small boy said "But the Emperor has no clothes!"
And one of the Imperial Buttboys went to the small boy and said "It is dangerous to undermine the Emperor's credibility in wartime."
The small boy said "Alright then, the war won't last forever, and when it ends I will say that the Emperor is naked."
The emperor heard this, and said "Um, this could be - that is we really - war is a turrble thing, but - what happens when I'm not the Wartime Emperor and thay say mean things about me?"
But the Emperors Grand Vizier popped in from his undisclosed secret location and said "Don't worry. We're at war with a military tactic. It willlast forever. No one will EVER be allowed to undermine the Emperor."
And the Imperial procession went on, as the Warriors of Blackwater took the small boy off for his waterboarding.
Moral: To speak bad things about the war during times of war is disloyal to the war, and the Emperor will send you to Gitmo along with the bad children who don't finish their vegetables.

It seems to me the Laffer curve was the principle on which the tax cuts of the early 1980s were based. Let's see, let's see, what happened next ... booming deficits, lagging real income growth, job migration to other countries.
Then what happened:
Sometime in the early 1990s a president committed to eliminating the deficit came along. The deficit was eliminated. What happened next: Record Wall Street stock prices, increasing productivity with corresponding growth in real incomes. It was a good time, the 1990s.
I miss Bill Clinton.

America: Canada thinks your pricks
Bush-administration officials privately threatened organizers of the U.N. Climate Change Conference, telling them that any chance there might’ve been for the United States to sign on to the Kyoto global-warming protocol would be scuttled if they allowed Bill Clinton to speak at the gathering today in Montreal, according to a source involved with the negotiations who spoke to New York Magazine on condition of anonymity.
[....]
“It’s just astounding,” the source told New York Magazine. “It came through loud and clear from the Bush people—they wouldn’t sign the deal if Clinton were allowed to speak.” Clinton spokesman Jay Carson confirmed the dustup took place and that the former president had decided not to go out of fear of harming the negotiations, but Carson declined to comment further.

natural disasters like hurricanes or earthquakes may not last long but the after effects still remain
WASHINGTON (AP) - People who sought refuge outside the 10 states that absorbed most of the evacuees from Hurricanes Rita and Katrina can remain in hotels at the government's expense while their applications for rental assistance are processed, officials announced Saturday.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency continues to pick up the tab for an estimated 42,000 hotel rooms in 47 states and the District of Columbia. In the 10 states that took in most of the homeless evacuees, FEMA recently pledged to continue paying their hotel bills until Jan. 7, after its previous Dec. 1 deadline was met with widespread criticism.

Liebermans' criticism of Bush is totally hypocritical. He should stop claiming to be a Democrat and acknowledge that he belongs to the Taliban wing of the Republican Party.
I compare Lieberman to Eugene McCarthy (RIP)...one a man of conscience and the other a warmonger who would put his own political agenda before the best interests of the American people...

I'm sure McCain will be loitering -- he's the ultimate media whore.
And still talking about Katrina? Talk about played out!

The trolls have completely abandoned any sort of debate over facts or ideas. It's all, "You're a bunch of lazy, godless traitors" and "We're coming for you" and all that shit. What a bunch of pathetic losers.
Guess what, trolls? Bush fucked up. He sucks. He botched the war. Thanks for playing.

God..I freakin' hate Christians. I hate them so much that I am willing to make a up a ridiculously phony story about getting bitch slapped around by a couple of Bible thumpers and making myself look like a complete asshole while completely throwing my career and credibility out the window.
Freakin' Christians...it's all their fault!!

Just think of how History will judge this Democratic Party: so full of nuttiness like Dean and Mother Sheehan that not even its 2000 Vice Presidential nominee would consent to stand with its leadership on the question of war.
It's damning and you damned well know it.

Amazing how wingers can make the word "Mother" sound filthy?

Yeah x3, I know what some of you want to say, anti-semetism and the same tired old bullshit. Well this is a pre-emptive "go fuck yourself" Ok?

Tena, Clinton was elected because he knew how to speak the language "aw shucks" - it's a rural form of down home detached stupidity that's swept across the land and it's what gave us W orst Ever.
Kerry, on the other hand, had that smarmy Northeastern elitist twang that said, Hey, vote for me I'm a rich snob who can blather and obfuscate every topic endlessley until you tell me to shut up.

Joe Lieberman speaking out against George Bush? I am astonished. When fellow Republicans begin speaking out against Bush, that can't be good.
