I don't think Metheny works for Air America; I'm not even sure Springer does. Springer show, I believe, is syndicated out of WTAM in Cleveland. Metheny has been an executive with Clear Channel in Cleveland for some time. He's been here since before AA existed, I know that. He also has oversight over a number of stations, not just WTAM.

I've listened to Springer.
The show's biggest sin is that it's boring. Jerry is a nice guy, which was a surprise to me, because having never seen his TV show, I just assumed he'd be an asshole.
That said, he does often try to be "reasonable." He's always saying things like, "I think the president is probably a very nice man, but ..." or "There are probably very good reasons for the domestic spying, but ..."
A lot of wingnuts call Jerry. He takes the "I'm going to reason with them approach," but he usually winds up conceding a few points to them. Unlike Mike Malloy, who nukes every wingnut who calls, Jerry gives them (yet another) fucking platform.
And J's General is right: having Jerry on there makes a lot of sense when you consider that they canned Winstead and Maron.
That's my two cents.

Springer's okay, but he certainly attracts the crankiest of the cranks to his radio show -- carry-overs from his TV show. He's polite to them, way too polite for my tastes.
In any case I MISS MARON!
I too have no doubt that fabulous Minnesota native Lizz Winstead is being wasted on Maurey & Connie. Nevertheless I hope it is successful for her sake.

Actually, I don't find that Springer gives that much quarter. I think he serves a purpose, just as velvet-voiced (ooh!) Malloy does. He seems to be trying to earnestly educate the morons, which may or may not work. Occasionally, I think he gets someone to see the light, and, if you're a teacher, those small victories matter.

They canned Unfiltered which was good and informative for Jerry Springer which is neither.
Franken solo is sleepy making.
And I can't afford to be asleep from noon to 3.
I'm sure that Mark Riley is a very nice guy and I'll give him a little longer. But he's an old pro so I don't understand how he can be floundering so.
Rachel Maddow is the best thing they have and now she comes on during my commute time so I really don't get a chance to listen to her.
I think Janeane Garafalo got bored with it all and she's hardly ever on anymore.
So basically I don't even listen to AAR anymore.
It's a shame.
We really need them this year and Danny Goldberg seems intent on destroying it.

Oh, I think that happens on a regular basis. There are a lot of folks in teevee news who appear intelligent and reasonable just by being able to string sentences together and by being all tidied up and slick on camera. But when you actually listen to what they're saying you wind up saying, "WTF?" on a regular basis.

I've never listened to Springer's radio program though I've seen the tv show a few times.
Maybe that's why.
Someone needs to do a big, fat treatise on the schizophrenia that is Springer.
If you've ever heard the guy seriously talk about politics, he's sharp, intelligent, well-informed, and seems to know exactly what's going on. I've only heard brief snippets of his AirAmerica show, and he's a solid, well-spoken communicator (I'm not gonna comment on his content, since as I said, I've hardly heard him).
Then you look at the TV show. What. The. Fuck. Is. That??? By this point, he has to know it's the most totally embarassing thing to ever air on "free" TV, he has to know that his association with it is a ten million pound millstone around his neck if he ever wants to be taken seriously in the political arena, and he has to have made more than enough money from it to keep him comfortable for the rest of his life.
And yet, he's still hosting it.
There's some serious mental shit going on there...

I listen to Franken every day because he's the best, and funnier and smarter than the others. And he rarely takes callers which is a definite plus.
Randi Rhodes can be funny, but she can also be incredibly irritating. And she has no idea how to argue her case against the wingnuts. It's too painful to listen to.
I tried listening to Rachel Maddow when she subbed for Franken - boring!
And yeah, too many wingnuts on Springer. But he does kick ass once in awhile.
So Air America doesn't please everybody all the time, but it has something for almost everybody.

Springer pays Air America for carrying his show, that got posted up in a lot of angry discussions about a month ago when Maron was on his way to the door. He made the list of AAR affiliates quite a bit bigger when he got them to pick him up; of course, a lot of them only carry Springer (like the Clear Channel outlet in Sarasota/Bradenton, which is otherwise wall-to-wall flying monkey right). It will be a long time before the wisdom of that trade-off can be judged, but dumping Unfiltered, which lead to dumping Lizz, probably left Dubious Danny Goldberg with a mouthful of bile for the funny, sequencing his contorted rationalization for dumping Maron. My take is that he's a shortsighted asshole, but like I said, only the fullness of time will tell.

The vacation replacement over the holidays was Jay Marvin, who's dynamite - an unapologetic, get-angry bleeding heart liberal who does mornings on 760am, the Air America outlet in Denver.
Marvin has roughly ten times the talent as Springer.
Slothrop |

Kevin Metheny has been indeed working as a program director for several Clear Channel stations operating out of Cleveland. He produces Springer's show, although I believe Springer broadcasts either from his home in Cincinnati, or from a studio in Chicago, when he's there doing his silly TV show.
Actually, Metheny has filled in for Springer on occasion. I personally have heard him fill in twice for Springer, and he did a pretty fair job for not being "on-air talent." He had a very listenable voice, didn't have as strong a Southern accent as the Kenny character in "Private Parts" and he could actually reel off a good strong liberal rant when he wanted to. So you can make fun of him for his "Pig Virus" rep, and he IS an employee of Clear Channel, but he also is committed to liberal politics.
However, he is in the Springer "grant a wingnut the occasional point" style of radio talk. In fact, he is probably in part responsible for making that part of Springer's style. And there is probably room for that on Air America. It's interesting hearing the talent on AAR in their own unique voices. Malloy and Rhodes are in the "give no quarter" style, Franken is the star who gets all the star guests (and frankly, I had serious doubts about him as a solo act, but I think he's improved his game a lot since Katherine Lampher left). Rachel Maddow is a rising star. And if you have to have a "reasonable Liberal", it might as be someone who carries ratings in his pocket like Springer.
I have no doubt of their sincerity about their desire to infiltrate the Right Wing Radio monopoly with a liberal voice, but it's clear Franken is using AAR to prepare a path for a Senate run, the way Ventura used talk radio to make himself a viable political figure in Minnesota.
Perhaps Springer is doing the same. His name was floated a couple years ago as a Dem nominee in Ohio, but since people only related him to his TV show, that notion was dismissed quickly. Perhaps he is using his radio show to reconnect himself with Ohio voters as a serious political figure, with an aim to take one of the Ohio seats in the US Senate. Remember, not long ago at all, Ohio was represented in the Senate by a very liberal Dem (Howard Metzenbaum) and a moderate Dem (John Glenn). With the collapse of the Ohio GOP, the time is ripe for a Dem resurgence there. The problem is, the Dem party in Ohio has been a joke, and the opening may have been there for a "celebrity" Dem candidate. However, with the emergence of Paul Hackett and Sherrod Brown, they may find themselves winning those Senate races in consecutive elections, and Jerry will be left out in the cold with his zillions of dollars.
