Atrios, I would have recognized it as humor about ourselves, if Steve had included himself amongst the nerdly. Since he doesn't it seems like the usual bash the nerds that I have had to deal with all of my life, and that I have dealt with, but that I don't want my kids to deal with.

I think the term 'nerd' has been misappropriated by the ahem...nerds.
IOW there were and are people in H.S. who are VERY smart; as a rule they don't need to study so much to get good grades. They smoke dope (or do heroin, heh) and yes they wear weird clothes, but NOT out-of-date clothes. Just weird clothes. And they aren't socially inept as much as they don't care. And they aren't bad at PE, but they aren't jocks either. Somehow or other this got confused with the people who ARE socially inept but want to be accepted, who get good grades BUT study way too hard, and so on. IOW nerds proper took the name and made it apply to all brainy types, who are now the 'nerds'. Probably as a self-defence mechanism.
Don't lump all Star Trek nerds in with the evil nerd-types running the show these days.
There are happy nerds, like marching band nerds. And there are happy tech club, Star Trekky. nerds. THEN, there are the unlikeable, thus angry, revenge-seeking nerds, and the animal-torturing nerds.
