GravatarWhoa.

GravatarThat was pure luck. But I guess it always is.

Gravatarpant pant pant pant pant pant pant pant

Gasp!

GravatarHelp!

GravatarWhy Atrios, I thought we all knew that you roll out new products in the fall.

Just in time for elections.

GravatarYou're right...and it will be timed to coincide with the 2006 elections. It's time to contact the DNC and ask that they get pro-active in preventing that nonsense from occurring again.

GravatarMy bet: War powers authorization vote in mid-October--just in time for the 2006 mid-terms!

Got nothin to do with U.S. security. Got everything to do with Republican majority security.

GravatarMs. Rice needs to start practicing her saber rattling for 2008.

Gravatarquick another war to distract from the quagmire of Iraq!

GravatarTime to start betting on when the force authorization vote will happen.

There won't be a war, but there will be lots of war talk.

If Bush gets force authorization it will burn a hole in his pocket. No way he's not gonna use it.

GravatarImpeach.

I ran from Iran when the shooting began.

Gravatarwhere will Bush find the money to start a destructive and totally furtile war?

GravatarAssrocket has one of those Colin Powell-style annotated satellite photos of Iranian facilities.

GravatarI remember when we didn't have to talk about war all the time. I even remember when I never thought about maybe having to move to another country to retain my freedom. Strange country.

GravatarThere's no excuse whatsoever this time for any dem to vote to authorize, none at all.

GravatarIran is a "grave" threat. Or something. I bet early October on IWR II: Iranian Boogaloo.

Gravatarthe military-industrial complex clearly want to make some more money.

GravatarAtrios predicts soft landing.

Gravatar There's no excuse whatsoever this time for any dem to vote to authorize, none at all.

A-fucking-men.

GravatarThey waited until after the election to go into Fallujah....they will wait to find out the outcome of the Nov. '06 elections to go to Iran.

Gravatar"Iran is a "grave" threat. Or something. I bet early October on IWR II: Iranian Boogaloo."

They hate us for Iraq's freedom!

GravatarWhat will our good and grateful pals who are "running" Iraq have to say about this shit?

GravatarThink of it this way: everyone wants to withdraw troops from Iraq, why not start a war with Iran, and redeploy the troops there. Kill two birds with one stone, right?

GravatarRosy scenario?

GravatarAfter Labor Day 2006.

They keep pulling the same bullshit over and over and fuckin' over and the press NEVER fucking calls them on it.

It's maddening!

Gravatarand where will Bush find the support for such a folly?

Gravatarwhere will Bush find the money to start a destructive and totally furtile war?
Moonbootica

A few more tax cuts for the wealthy always takes care of this.

GravatarI remember when we didn't have to talk about war all the time.

I remember actually thinking when I was younger that there was no way the world would ever see a "superpower" engaged in any war again. I assumed the mere threat was enough to keep noses clean and shoes tied.

GravatarI guess that's why there's talk of troop withdrawal from Iraq. Hell, they'll need some warm bodies to send to Iran. Can't Bush be forced to finish the military term that he AWOLed years ago? Of course, he's not fit to serve...

Gravatarwhy not start a war with Iran, and redeploy the troops there.

Sadly enough, that's probably how it will go down. The dems need to get on top of this NOW.

I agree w/ Atrios. Lots of sabrerattling, no war.

Gravatar...but...but....the usa doesn't have enough soldiers to start another war!

DRAFT!

GravatarIran should change its name back to Persia to throw the wingnuts off the scent.

GravatarEvents may overtake us sooner. I'll stick with Superbowl Sunday.

GravatarWaitasec.

Doesn't Bush already have authority (in his own mind, anyway) to invade Iran, North Korea and for all I know East Stroudsberg, Pennsylvania? After all, the Congress authorized (the threat of) force in Iraq, and on the basis of that vote, Bush got to wiretap all of us without warrants, and indeed to ignore any law his li'l ol' heart desired, right?

He don't need no steenkin' resolutions, Jack; he's already got one.

(With apologies to El Gato Nero and Walter Huston, respectively.)

The much bigger question is, where is he gonna find the army to do it? He's pretty much used up the one we had...

GravatarAtrios, get fucking real.

Really?

You really want to make the equivalence here?

You're blinded by ideology.

The motherfuckers say they want to destroy us and Israel.

The motherfuckers say they have a "right" to have nuclear weapons.

The motherfuckers are now resuming uranium enrichment and say they will block inspections.

Do they have to be ass-raping you before you consider them a threat?

Fucking delusional.

GravatarMichelle Malkin suggest imprisoning all persians.

So Darn Discerning, that one!

GravatarIf the US does take military action against Iran, I predict that a new class of "Ayatollah Assahola" trolls and wingnuts will emerge from the primordial swamp.

It's a manifestation of the wingnut pathological fixation on settling old scores. So expect gleeful troll yelps of "Payback time!" if nothing else.

GravatarFucking delusional.
ether

Fine.

What military force are you going to use to fight them?

Army Generals already say the U.S. military is "broken." Troops are on their 4th and 5th rotation in Iraq. We're using Reservists and National Guard, and we have nothing left to spare unless we start emptying out bases in Korea, and around the world.

Now who's delusional?

GravatarStarting an Iranian war would be a piece of cake for the chimporer...murkin people are so friggin stupid, they would bust their ass to get to the kool-aid...

GravatarYou've got it wrong, Atrios. The Bushites will simply attack coordinated with Israel. News reports say the attack will use ground penetrating nukes. There is no public support for an attack on Iran, which will surely trigger a wider war, including retaliation on troops in Iraq and the pro-Iran Shiites will kick us out. Could lead to confrontation with Russia and China as Russian technicians will be killed in the attack. Here's the scenario
http://www.globalresearch.ca/ind...& articleId=1714

Gravatar"They keep pulling the same bullshit over and over and fuckin' over and the press NEVER fucking calls them on it."

There is no press--just more facist propaganda.

Gravatarfrankly after Iraq, why would anyone trust the Neocons to run a war.

GravatarAttaturk,
I've had "Raspberry Beret" in my head all day, and I blame you.

Gravatarwow, that iran sure does sound like a threat. Maybe we should've attacked them first instead of iraq.

heh heh.

What are some good reasons for NOT attacking Iran? How does it compare to Iraq?

GravatarAs soon as Israel attacks, we'll be right there beside them.

GravatarHmmm. The more I roll this idea around, the more the Iran thing looks like it could be a political disaster for Bush.

The Chinese are likely to take sides with Iran - they need that sweet, sweet crude they get from Iran. Already they're buying less US treasuries. They could really put the screws to Lil' Georgie in the Iran thing. And he'd have to back down or accept the hideous economic consequences.

Of course, for that to hurt him politically, the Democrats would actually have to point out how deeply into debt he's sold us to the world's only remaining Communist superpower - to the extent that we cannot act in regards to potentially serious threats like the prospect of a nuclear Iran - particularly since he's exhausted our military with pre-emptive war against a non-threat.

So of course, no one will ever hear these points.

GravatarThe motherfuckers say they want to destroy us and Israel.

It is not our duty to protect Israel any more than protecting Zambia from warlords. It would be nice, but not neccesary. If we are fucking up the Middle east on account of Israel-its bad news. Israel is less safe now. If anybody will take out Iran it will be Israel.

GravatarPlus, the topography of Iran does not lend itself to massive land invasion, being so craggy and mountainous and all.

Who's waiting for the massive Poppy bomb that'll put us all to sleep?

GravatarWhen will the bushco enablers finally be affected by their koolaid habit?

GravatarCaptain Ed is OK with the dead Pakistani villagers

However, we should not overreact to the miss or the missed intel (if that is what it proves to have been), nor should we let up in our pursuit of the leaders of the lunatics that conducted the 9/11 plot. This is war, and unfortunately war results in collateral deaths by mistaken targeting.

GravatarAtrios, I stand by that and didn't vote here in California.

I still think Bush is inept.

And I think Democrat pressure is the reason he's forced to be inept.

GravatarAnd Now Iran
We can't rule out the use of military force.
by William Kristol
01/23/2006

And President Bush and Condoleezza Rice are serious. They are now speaking with new urgency, since the Iranian government is testing us, and its nuclear program could well be getting close to the point of no return. And they know that they have to speak with confidence and authority. Our adversaries cannot be allowed to believe that, because some of the intelligence on Iraq was bad, or because the insurgency in Iraq has been difficult, we will be at all intimidated from taking the necessary steps against the current regime in Tehran.
http://www.weeklystandard.com/Co...06/ 585tdlqf.asp

"some of the intelligence on Iraq was bad"

Is kristol looking to get his own comdey central show? That would be funny except for this:
"the insurgency in Iraq has been difficult"

Over 2200 dead, 15,000 wounded, $5 billion a week and no end in sight.

GravatarPlus, the topography of Iran does not lend itself to massive land invasion, being so craggy and mountainous and all.

Didn't stop Bush from thinking that he could waltz through "The Graveyard of Empires", did it?

You'd think the name would be a fucking clue...

GravatarI think Democrat pressure is the reason he's forced to be inept.

I'm speechless.

GravatarIf you haven't already, read a wonderful Jack London story called "The Chinago." It's about colonial powers teaching a lesson to untermenschen.

Iran has learned the lesson from Iraq. Which is that the US will gleefully destroy any random nation it takes a dislike to, regardless of actual threat or provocation.

If I was in Iran (or any other nation, for that matter), I'd be beating plowshares into swords, for self-defense if nothing else.

GravatarAnd I think Democrat pressure is the reason he's forced to be inept.

Yikes! You have got to be kidding me.

GravatarI have a hard time imagining there will be a war authorization this time.

I think the main reason for Chimpy's low approval ratings is the war we got now, and I don't think another war will fix that. I don't think the people, gullible as they are, will buy another WMD threat-based war excuse.

I also think that most of the fools in Congress who voted for the first one were either cowed into it by the perception that it was what the people wanted and that they would lose their offices if they didn't, or they were lured into it by the idea that it would be both easy and a bonanza for their constituent and crony business interests. Since neither of those factors appears to be operative in this case, I don't see what would motivate anybody to vote for a war being promoted by a President with approval ratings consistently between 35% and 45%.

GravatarI'm disgusted by national media, NPR and my local media. They've all decided to make Iran the Big Story all the time, which strikes me as just unbelievably propaganda. How convenient for them to wait for the talking points from the Bush government to decide what story to cover.

Why don't we have coverage on the failure of Iraq? Or how about, you know, the failing Medicare drug plan? Or the number of Americans who have to freeze or starve, pick one? Or nothing being done to rebuild New Orleans?

Oh no, all we can see in the news is ginned-up reasons for yet another war. And I see Blair the poodle is carrying water for Prince Bush again.

GravatarTena--

Bush is a classic paranoid (from my 1950's layperson definition of the term).

And I don't think he has Congress with him anymore. Like Captain Queeg, he knows that.

But this ain't the Navy, and this country at the "Bounty."

And Congress is a co-equal branch of government, not Bush's officer staff.

I think they are about to remember that. And we need to remember that not all issues are decided by the cable news talking heads and Thomas Friedman. Or the blogosphere.

Bush will push this really hard. But then, he pushed Social Security really hard, too.

Congress is going to support diplomacy this time, not warfare. And the rest of the world will not be another "Coalition of the Willing" this time.

In fact, they will push back.

GravatarYep, it's coming folks to all the college-bound kids near you, and the Draft for war with Iran.

GravatarOf course they will start out making us think this will be yet another war over in two weeks....Shock and Awe was so successful the first time around and all. Carpet bomb the hell out of em for a few days and they are just going to hand us the keys to the country don't you know!

I'm fucking sick of reading this bullshit about how stupid the entire goddamned population of the country is. That's nonsense. If it was true, Bush would still be polling in the 60% range and he hasn't polled above 45% for months and months and months.

He's mostly down in the 30s. Now tell me again how all Americans are stupid sheeple.

GravatarThe sad thing, okay, one of the million sad things, is that Iran really seemed headed toward a reasonably secular, reasonably democratic country in the heart of the MidEast. Real parliamentary elections, a growing separation of the elected government and the Ayatollahs. Maybe I'm just being too optimistic, but there seemed far better prospects than Iraq. I guess the problem was that neocons couldn't take credit for it if it happened.

GravatarBush will push this really hard. But then, he pushed Social Security really hard, too.

*snort!*

GravatarAnd Atrios,

It isn't lying, it's the application of greatest utlity in action through truthiness.

Gravatar"They keep pulling the same bullshit over and over and fuckin' over and the press NEVER fucking calls them on it."

The press only exist to bash dems for not paying obeisances to Bush feet. I've been on this blog for years and have heard people say, " Yes, this is the scandal that will crush the GOP." I thought that when the prostitute was caught shilling for Bush, that would be the one. Then Plamegate, now Bribegate. Nothing will ever bring the GOP down as long as they control the press. Imagine if Gore had done the exact same things as Bush. We know what the GOP would have done, but what would the press have doen?

GravatarSeems like "quagmire" might be one of those words that don't really have a plural.

GravatarClinton backs PM as future UN chief

Former US president Bill Clinton has given Prime Minister Tony Blair his backing as a future secretary general of the United Nations.

Mr Clinton said Mr Blair would make a "good" head for the international organisation when he stepped down as Prime Minister, as he has promised he will before the next general election.

Current secretary general Kofi Annan's term in office ends on December 31 this year. While most Westminster watchers believe Mr Blair hopes to stay in 10 Downing Street until 2008 at least, he is thought to be ambitious to move on to another leading role on the world stage and few would be as tempting as the top UN post.

god can you imagine Blair has UN chief, it will truly become a rubber stamp.

Gravatarplural of quagmire - quagmires

GravatarWGG -- word.

The best book I've ever seen on card games says poker isn't a card game. It's a game played with money, and the cards are just a handy accessory.

Likewise, dissenters in the US are the real enemy in the GWOT. Iraq, Iran, al Qaeda, and the Taliban are just handy accessories.

GravatarFormer US president Bill Clinton has given Prime Minister Tony Blair his backing as a future secretary general of the United Nations.

Are you fucking kidding me? Why not pick Bush?

Fucking moron.

GravatarThere won't be a war

There will be an air war, for sure. There's no reason why we can't bomb Iran. Can't invade though because we don't have an Army any more.

Oh, and when we do attack Iran, expect their Shiite brothers in Iraq to do some really mean shit to the pinned-down remnants of our Army.

GravatarAnd Congress is a co-equal branch of government, not Bush's officer staff.

Gravatar Saddam judge 'resigns from trial'

The chief judge in the trial of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has tendered his resignation, reports say.

A source involved in the tribunal told the BBC he is disappointed by public reaction to his running of the trial.

Judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin has been accused by Iraqi and US politicians of being too lenient on Saddam Hussein during hearings at his murder trial.

The source said his resignation has not yet been accepted and colleagues are trying to persuade him to reconsider.

Gravatar"Iran All the Way Home"?

His new song will be "Iran, these colors don't run".

The chorus will go "Iraaan, I don't ruuuun! Iraaaan, the US of A don't ruuuuun!"

Or some variation thereof.

You know it will happen.

GravatarThe sad thing, okay, one of the million sad things, is that Iran really seemed headed toward a reasonably secular, reasonably democratic country in the heart of the MidEast.

Well, it actually alreadt was exactly that, Until in 1952 or thereabouts Mohammed Mossadeqh, the freely elected ruler of Iran, decided to nationalize the oil reserves because he couldn't stand the sight of the hideous poverty his people lived in.

Our dear allies the Brits, whose British Petroleum company stood to suffer a serious financial setback from this, convinced Ike to aid them in overthrowing this legitimately elected, secular government in Iran. I thinkIke agreed not because of the oil, but because all that talk from Mossadeqh about alleviating the people's suffering sounded too much like socialism, and he was afraid they'd end up siding with the Russkies.

So we got the Shah. ANd it has all been downhill from there....

GravatarBushCo War Plan 2006:

"Trust us, third times a charm"

GravatarRobert - watch out - I've already been accused of wishful thinking this morning.

GravatarI'm sure the plan is to bomb sites in Iran, hoping there's some response that can justify the use of tactical nukes. Rumsfeld's had that particular fantasy from the beginning, and nuclear weapons are the last toy Boy George hasn't had a chance to play with.

If we do use nukes anywhere I think the world could very well collectively turn their backs on our economy. We can't be threatened militarily but Bush has put us in such an economically weak position that being shunned by the EU and most of Asia would hurt us real badly.

GravatarI would still like to see William Jefferson Clinton heading the U.N. myself. Much better brain than Tony Blair...who wants a poodle running the U.N.?

GravatarAnd the rest of the world will not be another "Coalition of the Willing" this time.

And how many of the leaders of the old coalition are out or on their way out?

GravatarBetter to have a "Big Dog" at the U.N. than a "poodle" if you ask me!

GravatarI don't think people are truly stupid and if they are its only because they are kept in ignorance.

if you don't know whats going on, how can you care?

GravatarBesides, a big reason for attacking Iran is revenge for the embassy takeover and hostage-taking.

Gravatarmer...or anyone...there's a clinical term (or so I think I recall) for people who constantly start grand projects, and never get past the grand start. What is that term?

(Besides "BooshCo," that is. I think we'll have to wait a few years before "Bush Syndrome" has its own entry in the DSM.)

GravatarOn CNN's Web site, breaking news - Jennifer was totally kept in the dark about Angelina's pregnancy by Brad.

Can you believe it?!

GravatarMoonbootica, I was wondering about Blair too.

But how could he fail to support any US military action, quite frankly, short of waging a pre-emptive war on Great Britain?

And the Poodle, or Catcher if you will, might even get on board with that.

His income from the Carlyle Group or some other willing patron will pay for a luxurious residence anywhere in the world, I'd think.

I can't imagine that Blair would finally have an epiphany, see that he'd fallen under Dubya's evil enchantment of wanton power-lust, and renounce his stewardship in the hegemony once and for all.

In for a penny, in for a pound.

GravatarRobert - watch out - I've already been accused of wishful thinking this morning.
Tena

Tena--As a pastor and a confessing Christian, I start out way ahead of you that score.

GravatarIs the Iran talk to keep attention off Alito, or is the Alito tlak to keep attention off Iran? Or, do we have the most fucked up president in history?

Gravatar:%s/Iraq/Iran/g

GravatarI would still like to see William Jefferson Clinton heading the U.N. myself.

That would be a perfect job for him. He's such a people person. And he represents the last vestige of American credibility in the world. His presence there, as an ex-leader of the US, would do a great deal to rehabilitate the image of the UN as a relevant, important institution.

Gravatar Besides, a big reason for attacking Iran is revenge for the embassy takeover and hostage-taking.

That's what I'm saying. It's a kitsch war, a nostalgia war.

My favorite music ever was made in 1979-80, and I have no desire to go back there. None.

GravatarI'm sure that many Clear Channel owen stations will be happy to do their part by recycling the "Bomb Iran" song from the late 70s and gving it heavy rotation.

"Iran sucks" T-Shirts will make a big comeback as well.

GravatarLittle Brøther

British politics is truly dysfunctional at the moment.

GravatarIf Bush gets force authorization it will burn a hole in his pocket. No way he's not gonna use it.

Yah.

GravatarLike A. says there doesn't have to be a war. Just a lot of talk. At no point will the "liberal media" ask hard kwestins.

With the "liberal media" we have right now rethugs pick up senate seats this year.

GravatarHis presence there, as an ex-leader of the US, would do a great deal to rehabilitate the image of the UN as a relevant, important institution.

And all the little heads exploding in apopletic fits because HE WILL NOT GO AWAY!!!!

GravatarHis new song will be "Iran, these colors don't run".

The chorus will go "Iraaan, I don't ruuuun! Iraaaan, the US of A don't ruuuuun!"

Thanks Stinky!

GravatarAttaturk,
You're right; Angelina relly should have taken you to lunch and told you herself.

GravatarI'm fucking sick of reading this bullshit about how stupid the entire goddamned population of the country is. That's nonsense. If it was true, Bush would still be polling in the 60% range and he hasn't polled above 45% for months and months and months.

I agree with Tena. If you believe that the population is stupid, how could you possibly believe in democracy? If you really believe they are stupid, then all you really want is a Dear Leader of a different type. Well, fuck that shit. Remember -- a functioning democracy relies on an informed citizenry. The corporate state has built a regime designed to keep the citizenry from being informed -- a corporate press that lies and distorts and misleads; an economy that keeps you working for lower and lower real wages and worrying about how to make ends meet while at the same time still flogging the American ideal of consumer goodies and "everybody can make on their own" bullshit. With the way the average citizen is being leaned on these days -- distracted, lied to, and pressured -- it's a wonder the Chimp's numbers aren't higher. He's got a raving propaganda machine in his favor, and he still can't get his approval ratings above mediocre at best.

GravatarYeah, and you're the same guy who can feed a family of 10 on tofu for a month.

Really, Tina. Now you are just being childish. You know very well I never said such a thing.

So I'm going to take your word for this.

Talk about your sweeping and overly broad characterizations of things -

Well if I'm so wrong, then how come the GOP have been winning electionsin creasing margins? Why is Fox so popular? Why do a sizable amount of people STILL think Iraq has nukes, we found WMD's and that Saddam was responsible for 911.

GravatarShit, Steve - this is universally true about all human beings everywhere. There are lots of ignorant, selfish lazy and easily manipulated people all over the fucking planet - they are not unique to the US.

That's not the same thing as saying the american people are bright or well informed now is it. You're lowering the bar pretty far especially considering all the advantages the American public has over most of the rest of the world.
Face it, the last five years has not been this country's finest hour. Complacency, ignorance, stupidity, arrogance. Pick one. It ain't pretty and I'm not proud.

GravatarAll they need is a missing blonde to distract them from any GOP scandal.

Actually, I guess they've gotten bored with missing white women. The latest story that's been getting hours and hours of coverage is of a missing white man, a newly minted groom who disappeared off of a cruise ship.

Gravatarif the us tries anything with iran, we will find ourselves in a much worse situation than in eyerack. I guess cheneyCo thinks we can just stage from the left and right flank, eyerack/afghanistan and mosey on ito persia, ahem, I mean eyeran like it's nobody's business (well, them media's and big oil)

no, talk about a global fiasco, we would witness a crash of the dollar, a surge in commodities (not just oil and gas) and an all out boycott of all things 'murkin. I'm sure cheneyco would love all this, given that the rapture would be all but imminent but I'm quite sure cheneyco's employee-owners are quite happy with the status quo ie the culture of massive corruption that now exists in what was once 'murka.

November of '06 will be more important than 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2008 all rolled up into one.

EVERY SINGLE SEAT IN THE HOUSE IS UP FOR GRABS this year.

That's more vital to 'murka's interests than anything eyeran could ever do for the next 10 years.

GravatarWhy couldn't Iran just wait their turn like every other A-rab country. Now Syria is gonna get mad that Iran cut them in line.....

GravatarClinton has lost all worldwide respect for teaming up with Bushie Pop. Blair has no chance of becoming UN Secretary General, no matter how often he chants, Af-ri-ca, Af-ri-ca.

GravatarJon Snow - Shooting History

GravatarRepost from below -- Why is the House not back in till the end of January again? Which law enacted this "Delay"?

I believe Dennis Hastert made the decision when they adjourned last year, in order to save DeLay's position as Majority Leader. It was a gambit to give the crook time to manipulate the legal system in Texas. Guess that didn't work out so well.

Little Boots

Gee I wonder what changed. Had nothing to do with 150,000 American troops right next door. Nothing to do with "axis of evil."

Damn those Persians!

by and by, four years ago it was the secularists urging Iran to embark on the nuclear course, and the clerics arguing against it. That too has changed, for the same reason.

Gravatar"EVERY SINGLE SEAT IN THE HOUSE IS UP FOR GRABS this year"

As opposed to other house elections?

GravatarAnd, just in passing, anybody here with a need to work out, seriously? Let me recommend an elliptical bike. Me, 68 to 130 in a minute fifteen.... Wowza!

GravatarI believe Dennis Hastert made the decision when they adjourned last year, in order to save DeLay's position as Majority Leader. It was a gambit to give the crook time to manipulate the legal system in Texas. Guess that didn't work out so well.

In fact, it gave the time to topple Ney as well. And hell, there's still another week.

Gravatarin fact saying that the population is stupid is what he Neocons believe in.

they believe that the populace are well dumb and need to be guided by a powerful 'elite'.

GravatarMaybe it's our flawed democracy that's stupid.

GravatarLook at it from RoveCo's point of view.

You get most of the advantage politically from the advent of war, the debate over the AUMF, etc.

The debate, and not the war itself, was timed for the 2002 midterms.

GravatarTena,

I don't give a shit if Bush is down into the single digits in all the approval polls from Nov 5th 2004 until 6:59 p.m. on Nov 7th 2006. Somehow, just enough Americans are stupid enough to pull the wrong levers in the voting booth to keep these fascists in power, whether it's with the help of Diebold or not. If they weren't so fukking stupid there is no way they could steal it.

Bush ain't gonna use troops against Iran. We're going to have GE build several thousand more smart bombs and cruise missles, so those employees and NBC and MSNBC will all be makin good money and do everything they can to support his regime, then he'll bomb the shit out of Iran, innocent men, women, and children be damned. And this Holy war will go on and on and on and on and on and on.
Rightwing Republican power without End. Amen.

GravatarAs Paul Goodman put it, "A free society cannot be the substitution of a 'new order' for the old order; it is the extension of spheres of free action until they make up most of the social life."

GravatarWith the "liberal media" we have right now rethugs pick up senate seats this year.

Hadenough,

You hit the nail righton the head. I think that the repubs will either pick up seats or not lose any seat, unless the media dynamic changes drastically. The dems need to harp on the meida like the GOP has. What if Gore were president and the NYT's sat on a major story that would have effected the outcome of the elections? I'll tell you what would have happened-Congressional hearings. I know the dems dont have power, but in the Senate they can hold hearings. They could at least complain a little.

Gravatar...GOP...electionsin...

Exactly.

GravatarIn fact, it gave the time to topple Ney as well. And hell, there's still another week.
NYMary

Mary, I was saying below that I read this morning that the Democrats are trying to delay the vote on Alito. Ney has already gone down in the meantime. There's a chance more Repugs will be indicted if the Dems can hold the vote off.

There's a chance here - however slim it is. This isn't wishful thinking, this could be very good strategy right now.

GravatarLook at the world around us

when, five years ago, folks told us the Bushistas wuld destroy the USA, nobody could have believed it. Could/did you?
Could you have believed they'd have destroyed the Franchise; undermined the Courts; ruined the Army; permitted a murderous attack on US soil, started two bloody, unnecessary wars; installed an office of faith-based relief in FEMA; alienated our world-wide allies, and installed a lying, treasonous underling in the UN, abandonned the citizens a key US city to storms, and then to the predations of rapacious developers; ?

what have they touched that they haven't fucked up?

in just five years, Busheviks have systematically undone--or at least attacked and damaged--everything that, in my youth, i still believed my country stood for...

that is not failure...that is stupendous, spectacular success...

what is gonna stop it?
please...
i really want to know...

and don't tell me "you", cuz i've been the streets, before, faced the cops before, faced the bayonets before, faced the gas before...

i'll do it again, by dog, but i won't be the only fucking target...

GravatarI should just not pay attention until November. The political atmosphere in this country is beyond infuriating.

GravatarWell if I'm so wrong, then how come the GOP have been winning electionsin creasing margins? Why is Fox so popular? Why do a sizable amount of people STILL think Iraq has nukes, we found WMD's and that Saddam was responsible for 911.

And what about all those people who were absolutely -assured- that 4 out of 5 physicians agreed - Lucky Strikes Mean Fine Tobacco....

P O'Neill | Email | Homepage | 01.14.06 - 12:03 pm

And I'm sure Captain Ed was outraged, just outraged at the civilian deaths that resulted in the August 1998 strikes that almost, but not quite, got bin Laden. But that was The Clenis, who of course is the source of all evil in the world.

Oh, and: via CNN. Source: Al-Zawahiri not among 18 killed in airstrike. So we killed a cow and a bunch of unknown folks while a real potential problem builds.

GravatarMy pessimistic $.02? Polls today don't matter. Lincoln said you can fool all the people some of the time. Rove's done him one better: you only need to fool 51% of the people, and only on one single Tuesday every other November. That's easy when the media consists of nothing but catchers and no pitchers.

Alito's confirmation? America is fucked. Franklin gave us our Republic and, madam, we haven't kept her. And military technology has outstripped Jefferson's vision of periodic violent revolution. We can't kill these people, we can't win the elections, we're screwed.

I'm really thinking of giving up politics, giving up voting, giving up my blog, giving up listening to AAR (I've already quit NPR), and just moving away to the woods somewhere.

I'm serious. America's done. If I didn't have a family I'd plug myself today.

Any good football on?

Moonbootica

Jeez, you know, I've said the same thing many times in the last 3 years here. It's interesting that you, who are in Britain, can see it.

When we accuse all Americans of being stupid, we play right into the Right's game plan. I personally don't understand and never have how one can reconcile being liberal with this attitude. It has always been my understanding of liberal belief that we think people are capable of making their own decisions and of governing themselves and generally of changing everything for the better based on our better natures.

When you insist that everyone but you is an ignorant sheeple then you are parroting the right wing philosophy.

GravatarBushCo War Plan 2006:

GravatarI don't give a shit if Bush is down into the single digits in all the approval polls from Nov 5th 2004 until 6:59 p.m. on Nov 7th 2006. Somehow, just enough Americans are stupid enough to pull the wrong levers in the voting booth to keep these fascists in power, whether it's with the help of Diebold or not. If they weren't so fukking stupid there is no way they could steal it.

And that is exactly my point. Polls, approval rating are irrelevant. Bush has been in the 30's and low 40's for a long time. Most people polled disagree with Alito on most issues, but he will be confirmed anyway. Most people polled disagree with Bush on most issues, but he won ( or was close enought to steal) anyway. Most people polled disagree with the GOP on most issues, but they increased their margins anyway. The main problem is, right when Dems get traction on any scandal, there is ole' faithful media to poo poo the dems and to creat a missing white woman. Once the dems actually buy a few media outlets-that dynamic will change drastically, and they will start winning elections.

GravatarOh, and: via CNN. Source: Al-Zawahiri not among 18 killed in airstrike. So we killed a cow and a bunch of unknown folks while a real potential problem builds.

I'm sure the pugs will be saying that bombing a bunch of 'tents in the desert' or an 'aspirin factory' are noble and worthy causes in the 'war on terra' simply because they have an 'R' next to their names.

God damn I want these fucks to suffer horribly and painfully in November.

Gravataralso its incredibly patronising.

Gravatarplease.
I suspect there will be lots of war talk, but who's gonna believe the guy this time? And even if he's believed, who's gonna follow Commander Fucked-It-All-Up, with his approval rating of 30-something, into the breach yet again? Even a good chunk of the folks who still support the war in Iraq think George and Co have screwed the pooch.

On top of that you have guys on both sides of the aisle like Murtha, who has credibility; and Hagel, who has credibility AND Presidential aspirations, who have vowed to rein in this administration. They're not stupid: people are tired of the war which is being fought at the expense of their personal interest at home.

And I think of the broader picture: Iran sells an awful lot of oil to China and India, which are beginning to rival the US in terms of demand. Will China allow its energy partner to get levelled? Or will they dump more dollars, or perhaps make a stink over Taiwan, in an effort to discourage US aggression? I'm no genius, no global strategist, but is this not a plausible reaction?

It's sad: Iran could be a real threat, with serious antipathy toward the US, and we are limited in our ability to confront them. Excellent work Mr. Bush; your overlord's at SPECTRE are well pleased... or is that KAOS?

GravatarRe: Americans being stupid:

In the absence of reliable information, people have to first recognize that the information they are getting isn't reliable, and then think to arrive at reasonable conclusions.

At the very least, a majority of Americans are guilty of surrendering their capacity for critical thought. In other words, they're lazy. Thinkin' and stuff is hard, hard work and they've chosen not to do it.

What other conclusion can one reach, when one realizes that over half of the people in the country accepted, as a legitimate premise for pre-emptive war, claims that Saddam Hussein was going to fly remote-controlled model planes over their homes to spray them with anthrax?

This is not debatable. Because if a person heard that claim and thought, "this is ludicrous" and still supported going to war, there's proof positive that they chose not to think. And if they heard the claim and accepted it as a legitimate cause for fear...they're either stupid or certifiably insane.

America: not so much stupid as lazy.

Gravatar"In an abstract love for humanity one almost always loves only oneself." --Fyodor Dostoevsky, "Notes From The Underground"

They wont suffer; they never have. If the dems complain, the pundits will critisize them and say that they want America to fail. Dems need to stop dancing with the media and start fighting with them.

GravatarAmerica: not so much stupid or lazy, BUT BOTH.

GravatarWhy do they even need a congressional vote for war, much less wide approval from the people? Won't they simply just bomb the bejesus out of a couple of dozen Persian cities on a presidential order in the dead of night, forcing the Iranians to reply in kind by attacking US troops in Iraq? Then the war is a done deal, no messy Congressional votes needed. And the Merkin, smart, dumb, whatever, will fall in line.

Gravatar"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." ~Martin Luther King, Jr

GravatarFuck.

They've already succeeded in changing the conversation from putting a fascist on the S.C. to bombing Iran. And we all know the press can't cover more than on story at a time.

Up til the 2004 election I had enormous faith in the inate smartness of the American people. They may be ignorant, but usually they can smell a scam. Right now w can't break 40% approval, but I'm not so sure the lying scheming sacks of shit won't be able to manipulate the electorate again. Hell I can't convince the young women at work that Roe, for all intents and purposes, has been overturned.

Gravatarbeing shunned by the EU and most of Asia would hurt us real badly.

Look up. Look waaaay up....

James Bay has an off switch.

GravatarI want to point out that Iran is less of a threat to the US than North Korea. North Korea is geographically close to our west coast while Iran is about as far away from our soil as can be. Iran is, however, a bigger threat to US oil interests and Israel.

If India, Pakistan and North Korea can have nukes, who are we to deny Iran? The world needs to realize that nuclear technology is now within the grasp of "second-tier" countries.

How can we have a government extoll the virtues of nuclear power for energy and rattle our sabers when Iran talks the same way? We do not have a rational foreign policy. We do not have a rational government.

GravatarSpain detains suspected Iraq recruiters

A Spanish High Court judge has remanded in custody seven suspects accused of recruiting fighters to carry out bombings in Iraq.

Judge Fernando Andreu said in a court order on Saturday that the group, based in the northeastern Catalan town of Vilanova i la Geltru, was based around a mosque.

Iman Mohamed Samadi gave "radical speeches, particularly at Friday prayers, in which he requested prayers for mujahidins, or for people who had given their lives for the jihad (holy war)".

ask yourself how much money has been spent on 'education' in the past 40 years.

trillions$$$$

and every cent has been dedicated to depriving students of their natural curiopusity, and channeling it into behaviors which support the consumer state.

the state of affairs in USer politcs today is a shriekingly lout testament to the success of the effort to render people stupid, and to make it appear it was by their own hand...

still, this does nothing to dissipate the criticism that USers are, en masse, remarkably passive, incurious, insular, parochial, and yes, stupid...

GravatarI don't know if Americans are stupid or lazy. Seems to amount to the same thing at this point.

The irony is Americans will continue to reap the "rewards" of their actions, or non-actions, and as the economy continues to decline, we all (excepting the top 5 or 10%) will see a decline in our standard of living.

Gravatarthe key is

1) Getting the vote out
2) Seizing the Agenda back from the right wing

The key is seizing the media. The rest will take care of its self. Back in the 70's repubs kept on losing badly on their ideas, so they came up with this project to change the media dynamic-so their unpopular ideas would be more acceptable and passable. They have succeeded. Dems now need to buy media outlets. There are some choice outlets for sale. If though bought CNN, MSNBC, and Knight Ridder-it would be game over for the GOP.

GravatarFuck.

They've already succeeded in changing the conversation from putting a fascist on the S.C. to bombing Iran. And we all know the press can't cover more than on story at a time.

It's amazing how bad things can get when defense contractors (GE) and religious fanatics (Moon) own media outlets.

GravatarChavez denounces bid to block jet sale

CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez on Friday blasted an attempt by the U.S. to block Spain from selling Venezuela 12 military planes with American parts, calling it proof of Washington's "imperialism."

Displaying deep annoyance, Chavez asked hypothetically in his comments before the National Assembly what would happen if oil-exporting Venezuela cut off shipments to the United States.

Chavez also accused a U.S. Jewish rights group of joining a Washington-backed smear campaign after it denounced him for making anti-Semitic remarks. Chavez insisted those remarks had nothing to do with Jews and were badly misconstrued.

GravatarDoes anyone besides me see anything wrong with the following NYT headline and tease:

Democrats See Wide Bush Stamp on Court System.
With the success of President Bush's latest Supreme Court nominee, Democratic leaders see little hope of holding off a tide of conservatism.

HAS THERE BEEN A FUCKING VOTE YET?

GravatarI see the pancakes of freedom didn't do the trick.

Shit.

GravatarAnd I think Democrat pressure is the reason he's forced to be inept

Since nobody else has taken a real crack at this, I guess I will.

Was it the Democrats who convinced Bush that he could occupy Iraq with 150,000 troops? Was it the Democrats who suggested that he disband the Iraqi army? Was it the Democrats who said leaving all those weapons dumps unguarded was no problem? I could go on all day.

Bush wanted his Iraq war, no matter what. People tried to warn him about the dangers of starting such a war, but he didn't want to listen to them, much less revise his policy. It was so much easier to just call all of his critics cowards and traitors. It was easier for war-supporters like you to do the same. Now the whole thing has turned into the great big mess everybody warned you it would be, and you have nobody, but NOBODY, to blame but yourselves.

Only if a Republican is doing the bombing. If a democrat does it, it's 'wagging the dog.'

GravatarRussia, Kazakhstan to set up Eurasian Development Bank

(Interfax News Agency Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)MOSCOW. Jan 12 (Interfax) - Russia and Kazakhstan have reached an agreement on the establishment of the Eurasian Development Bank.

Kazakh Finance Minister Arman Dunayev and Russian Industry and Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko signed a document in presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev in Astana on Thursday, an Interfax correspondent reports.

GravatarHi spinoza! I wasn't sure if my comments were showing up on your screen lately.

Gravatarthe sooner the Iranians get going on that Uranium Enrichment, the safer we will all be. and the Russians and Chinese better get off their asses and finish fulfilling their shipments of anti-aircraft missiles to the Iranians.

no cakewalks here, boys and girls. the Islamic Republic of Iran is no Baath paper tiger.

if we really want a nuclear free Middle East, let's start with the Israeli's. maybe when the IAEE convinces the Israeli's to decommission their nuclear weapons, and their nuclear weapons programs, then the world will have a legal leg to stand on.

any attempt to use the Security Council to authorize any offensive military operations against Iran will be doomed by one simple word. Dimona.

GravatarRes, Tena, Blak--clearly, the media is no longer paying attention to the masses. If they bothered to read the LAT slop ed pages the last few days (admittedly pretty terrible these days), they'd have seen ALL negative letters on Mr. Alito. NOT ONE positive letter.

And yet they persist.

GravatarUzbekistan shuts US-supported ‘Freedom House’

TASHKENT — Uzbekistan has shut down Freedom House, a US-funded pro-democracy group, accusing it of providing rights activists with Internet access without a licence, the organisation’s country director said yesterday.

“We will do all we can to continue working, we will appeal,” Branka Sesto, Freedom House country director in Uzbekistan, told reporters.

He said the Tashkent city court had ordered the group to cease all activities for six months, citing its Internet facilities and accusing it of not being transparent in its projects and of using unregistered symbols. No one at the court was available for comment. “It is sad that in the last six months the human rights situation and situation in civil society is getting more grim,” Sesto said.

Re: Americans being stupid:

It's not just Americans who are stupid. Most of everybody in the world is pretty stupid.

OK. Stupid is a loaded, inflammatory term. How about most of everybody in the world has few if any meaningful critical thinking skills?

How else can you explain the number of people whose lives are ruled by the dogmas of ancient religions?

Does the world need to be run by an elite? Of course it does! Take your average Joe Sixpack construction worker. Does he have any idea how to rule the world? Does he?

You need to have a highly specialized, highle educated elite to do that. Of course, in order to produce a reasonably happy world, that elite must be accountable to the general populace, which while utterly unable to actually run the world, should at least understand its own interests well enough to vote for those members of the governing elite which will serve them.

This is what we call representative government, no? Direct democracy only exists in Switzerland, as far as I know. The initiative process here in California has pretty clarly demonstrated also that to the extent that it exists here, direct democracy is a disaster.

The breakdown between the Right and the Left is not over the issue over whether or not governance has to be carried out by an elite. It is about whether or not that government should really serve the interests of the governed or merely those of the elite itself. It is obvious which side takes which position.

To further their ends, the Right works tirelessly to obfuscate the relationship between their policies and the interests of the general populace with its already poor critical thinking skills. This task is made much easier by the fact that all the controlling interests in the organs of mass information dispersal are members of the elite whose intersts are exclusively served by the Right. It is also made easier by their endless efforts to make it harder and harder for a large segment of the populace to obtain sufficient education to get those critical thinking skills.

Thje Left, on the other hand, actually tries to govern with real accountability to the masses and in order to serve their interests. Since they are the good guys, all they really have to do is sufficiently educate the public in order to win, so long as the institutions of representative governement don't break down altogether.

So the true belief that people are stupid si held by both sides in thepolitical debate. It's just that the Right wants to keep themm that way, and the LEft desparately wants to make them smarter.

Anyway, I'm sure there's a new thread by now, so I'm talking to myself.....

GravatarDistract, distort, attack. Which card is bush playing now? Let's start calling a spade a spade and nail this bs for what it is.

GravatarWhy are you wondering whether there's been a vote yet? IT DOESN'T MATTER. Alito's in. Doesn't matter. Filibuster? Won't work. Elections in Nov.? Feh. I was hopeful, but the Rs are going to retain their majority in the House. Even with Abramoff. Even with Delay.

IT DOESN'T MATTER. If the Dems won't mount a serious filibuster (meaning a cloture-proof one, not just for show), then there's no hope of saving our democracy at all, on any issue. Done, ruined and fucked.

Seriously asking: what's New Zealand like? Is it reasonably liberal? Seriously. Because I'm quitting.

GravatarJudge Alito, how do you feel about abortions?

Alito: Honestly, I feel it is the taking of a human life, and I think the government should be able to protect those lives.

Judge Alito, how do you feel about this administration being responsible for the +100,000 civilians killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, especially the children?

Alito: I feel the government is protecting American lives, and I think it should have the power to protect those lives.

GravatarDemocrats See Wide Bush Stamp on Court System.
With the success of President Bush's latest Supreme Court nominee, Democratic leaders see little hope of holding off a tide of conservatism.

Even if Bush was at 7%, the Dems will never win. The media covers for bush's mistakes while bashing dems for pointing them out. Soros, and a few other wealthly liberals could change that dynamic in a second if they put their money in the right spot.

T2,

May I suggest that you are going about this all wrong. Sitting around all day bashing the Republicans does not foster change and neither does calling a majority of American stupid or naive. If the Democratic leadership were doing its job the Republicans would not be in power, especially when you consider the ammunition that the Dems had at their disposal in the last election. The only way that there will be change is if the Democratic Party is held responsible for this ridiculous string of failures and complicity with the opposition. Repeatedly and reflexively voting for these Bozos is how we have arrived at this disastrous situation.

to what, specifcally, do you refer, ma cherie? the drone attack? or some other part of my uncontrollable ranting this am...

GravatarFrom that NYT article:

The Democratic push [to outflank Bush's campaign to remake the judiciary] began in earnest on the last weekend of April 2001, when 42 of the 50 Democratic senators attended a retreat in Farmington, Pa., to hear from experts and discuss ways they could fight a Bush's effort to remake the judiciary.

"There were very few principles on which we could all agree," said Mr. Daschle, who was Senate minority leader at the time of the meeting. "But one was that we anticipated that the administration would test the envelope. They were going to go as far as the envelope would allow in appointing conservative judges."

What a surprise: "Very few principles on which we could agree."

I want to FIRE THEM ALL. ALL OF THEM.

GravatarHi spinoza! I wasn't sure if my comments were showing up on your screen lately.

Yes, and you are an evil and dangerous force. The many ferrets Atrios has working over the Haloscan NSA are onto you.

GravatarJack:

yeah, I do believe that. And I've learned a lot in the past five years.

At the end of the day, it's all about staying in office. Walter Jones was "mr. Freedom Fries" until his constituents' kids started dying at an alarming rate: now he wants a timetable. Mr. Santorum was most recently seen backing away from Intelligent Design. And NO ONE seems to know Jack Abramoff these days.

Do I believe there's a chance Bush could get a bounce by going after Iran, and thus the GOP will close ranks? Sure. But I don't know if that strategy'll work so well this time: a number of GOP-ers are now looking out for number one as the elections approach, and no one wants to be tied to an unpopular president, whose conduct on this war has lost a majority of the public. Number one issue, right?

Now if the Dems would only step up to the plate and knock a few out of the park: but we all know that monkeys will fly out of my ass before THAT happens.

GravatarAmerica: not so much stupid as lazy.
Jennifer

I think with the GOP undermining public education, funding religious schools, and the rise in home schooling, we can't expect an increase in critical thought to come anytime soon. I don't think it's being lazy, I think it's not realizing what all they don't know. Once you teach by doctrine it's hard to reintroduce critical thought.

Gravatar"the world needs to be run by the people for the people."

GravatarYeah, how's that Social Security revamp going?

Bush has gotten as much as he has because the Repuglicans have control of the 3 branches of government.

D'oh.

The only reason why SS went down was b/c he insisted on going on the road to talk about it. Rove already had a few dems resigned to the plan-only tryig to make changes on the margins. What did Bush in was his ego.

I disagre with you. Bush has gotten as far as he has not b/c he controls all branches-but because the GOP control the media, therefore the message.

GravatarT2--don't cash it in. It's easy to feel that way, and I've got my moments, but the reason we're here is because we know that, eventually, if we keep pushing back, things will get better.

Granted, they're probably going to have to get much worse before they improve.

Gravatarif we really want a nuclear free Middle East, let's start with the Israelis.

There was a big dustup involving a regular poster who we all love and some other folks. The person took a position in favor of Israel taking out Saddam's putative nuclear capability. As I watched it I was thinking about how it's hard for progressives to talk about our national policy toward Israel dispassionately. I wondered if anyone had any thoughts about this.

GravatarI wondered if anyone had any thoughts about this.

I do, but there is strong social pressure in the US never to speak ill of Jews or Israel--no matter how sleazy Jack Abramoff is.

GravatarRepeatedly and reflexively voting for these Bozos is how we have arrived at this disastrous situation.

Well, Nader proved how well the "we'll teach those Ds a lesson by not voting for them" approach works. How've the last 5 years been goin' for ya?

But the idea behind what you're saying has some truth. I was very active in '04. I walked a lot of miles registering voters. I almost got arrested for advocating for a voter who was being illegally disenfranchised. (I was a registered, D vote protection attorney who had the right to be there and the elections chair called the sheriff anyway.) I met personally with the Oregon Secretary of State to get some screwups in our county's system corrected.

And now I quit. Know how the Rs use hotbutton issue to invigorate their base? Well, the Dems aren't doing a damn thing to invigorate me. If there's a fight on, I'll be in the front lines. But no fight? Then fuck you. I'll take a nap on my couch.

Gravatarblerb so I assume you will be part of the 'elite'?

GravatarIf Bush had been able to buy the Iranians a reactor for the social security revamp he would have been able to pay the military plants more because the war would have been more REAL (WMDs). Now the man is stuck. Noone knows whether the Iranians are as stupid as the Iraqis (alright they can storm embassies) and no additional money. man needs to reform retirement benefits.

GravatarAs I watched it I was thinking about how it's hard for progressives to talk about our national policy toward Israel dispassionately. I wondered if anyone had any thoughts about this.
Virginia

I think a lot of people who gave the regular feedback had jumped in late and did not realize it all stemmed from comment about what Israel did back in early 80's. They thought he was using Saddam/WMD's/bush bs in relation to present day situation w/ Israel and Iran.

GravatarIf the Democratic leadership were doing its job the Republicans would not be in power, especially when you consider the ammunition that the Dems had at their disposal in the last election. The only way that there will be change is if the Democratic Party is held responsible for this ridiculous string of failures and complicity with the opposition.

I used to think the same, and the dems have been pretty weak until lately. But have you noticed that anytime dems get a backbone and start to complain, that the media starts in with this," Dems hate Bush. Dems want Bush to fail. Dems have no plan" bullshit? The media is the main reaon why dems are out of power. Remember during the recount the media was treating Gore as the sore loser? During Kerry's horrific campain, they gave the Swifties free air-time and ran an anti-Kerry movie, while refusing to run Move on ads. Not to speak of the NYT sitting on information that could have effected the elections. The dems could do better, but even if they did, americnas will hear negative shit about them.

GravatarVirginia

giving Israel 3 or 4 BILLION year in, year out, makes US taxpayers complicit in this part of the War. as fas as I know, they don't manufacture Apache attack helicopters or Hellfire missles inside Israel. isn't almost 40 years of financial, political, and military support for the illegal occupation of East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza enough?

when is enough enough? I ask with an open mind.

I'm still in the fight, if there's a fight...but i aint gonna be the only guy in the street with a pitchfork...

GravatarLook T2, I'm not getting dragged into another Nader debate. I've offered proof on those claims before and no one has disproved them anyway.

The Democratic Leadership is at fault here. Cutting off grassroot money is not a solution as it only puts them deeper in the corporate pocket. There is only ONE solution here, your vote. Keep being "pragmatic" with your vote and you can only expect this downward trend to continue.

GravatarI do, but there is strong social pressure in the US never to speak ill of Jews or Israel--no matter how sleazy Jack Abramoff is.

There is. The way this war started was because a bunch of crazy ass Jews (most neocons) thought that in order to protect Israel, we should start shit in the middle east. Even Israelis think guys are crazy. I understand their motivation-generally speaking Israel is a friend- but they took it too far. And no we will end up spending 3 trillion on this war.

Gravatarsince:

WAR IS PEACE

we're just tryin' to bring a little peace to the middle east.

you know like an Ayatollah of Rockandrolla..

GravatarT2: what worries me is that the Dems are really afraid

afraid that if they bring it to the GOPhascists in the manner necessary to inspire and enliven the base, the busheviks would unleash the orcs, and we'd have a 'real' civil war here...

GravatarLook T2, I'm not getting dragged into another Nader debate. I've offered proof on those claims before and no one has disproved them anyway.

I dont blame the Nader Voters, but I blame Nader himslef. Why did he run in Florida? If he wanted to run in Alabama, Texas, New York, California-fine. But Florida. Nader has been the most influential person fo the last decade. Iraq, Scalito, Roberts, Bankrucy Bill.. you name it-can be placed at his feet b/c he ran in FL.

Gravatarblerb so I assume you will be part of the 'elite'?
Moonbootica

Well, actually, I have little interest in governing anybody. I am a scientist. My work is the struggle between man and all of nature, rather than between himself and his own nature.

But to the extent that I have the critical thinking skills necessary to make informed decisions about policy, I would be qualified to be part of the elite. ANd so would you, since the very fact that you are here writing about these matters indicates that you want to see the world in terms of broad concepts of utility and fairness, rather than merely in terms of your own narrow interests.

You understand, I emphatically don't want to disenfranchise the masses, don't you? I just think that seriously believing in anarchism reveals a certain ignorance of human nature. If everybody were as smart and as committed to a fair solution to the world's problems as you, it might work. But they're not. Just take a look at history. That's what you study, isn't it? The fault, dear Moonbotica, is not in our states, but in ourselves.

My point is that as a member of the left, I want to do everything in my power both to make the governing elite accountable to the most informed populace possible, and at the same time to insure access to that elite to anybody who has the innate talent and motivation to learn the requisite skills.

GravatarThere are sheets, btw.

Gravatarblerb so I take that as a yes then.

GravatarMy father believes in benevolent dictatorships, and he believes he should be the benevolent dictator.

GravatarThat's what's so funny about the situation... I'm sure IRAN knows that we're won't -- and we can't -- go in and invade them. So why would they give two shits about all our threats? We've lost credibility. Invading IRAN would be an even larger disaster...

GravatarWhy does Malkin hate America?

And why is she so ugly?

GravatarAs to how Bush can get a war authorization, Ken Macleod had a pretty good idea in a recent post. Just manufacture a casus belli (like Tonkin Gulf), he said, and the American people will rally around their "commander-in-chief" again without thinking twice. And then we'll probably find out what REALLY happened around 2030.

GravatarI'm afraid there will be a war. I can't believe my wife and I are bringing a child into this world. I hope there's still something left for him or her. Before anyone jumps on me for this, let me tell you that we were going to wait until after the 2006 midterms at least to see if the situation in the world had improved (like maybe the Democrats had gained a few seats in the House and Senate). Well sometimes things don't go as planned. We're ready for children, but terrified that they will be growing up in a world that is ruined by the actions of these warmongering cowards.

I know these bastards will stop at nothing, and I know they are evil and stupid, but I never really believed they would invade Iran too. Of course, I never believed they would be able to bullshit the country into letting them invade Iraq on false pretenses, but when I saw the "shock and awe" I realized what a naive fool I'd been.

Anybody else nostalgic for the pre-Bush years? When there seemed to be hope for America and there wasn't all this talk of fear and war and death? I'm signing off, I'm very depressed now.

GravatarAmericans can't possibly be stupid enough to fall for this same scam again, can they?

Gravatarwhat scam? Did you think that Our Beloved Government might lie to us?

GravatarMy two cents.

It's all about mo' money for "them that gots" money (i.e. Bushies, neocons, oil cos. ...).

(OK, I already knew that...)

First, lie, cheat, cajole, undermine, threaten, install puppet regimes, etc. If that doesn't work after 20-30 years, invade, conquer, steal, usurp that which is not yours.

Not working, need to speed it up? Bring in the army. Stretch 'em thin. Overdeploy 'em. Army/marines/reserves/national guard. Send 'em all in. Send 'em all over.

Not safe yet? Go after some more targets. Hey, North Korea, Iran, Syria. Don't forget them evil Venezuelans and Bolivians. Don't forget to contract out national security to K-Street.

Still don't have ownership or complete control? Not enough armed forces to go after more bad guys and protect us at home? Still too slow? Only one thing left...nuke 'em.

(OK, I hadn't thought about that until just now...)

"They were going to attack, they are evil, our army is worn down from protecting everyone and everything against terroists! No other country would help! We had to nuke 'em!"

Then, the "them that gots" can walk in to take what is "rightfully" theirs. They'll show 'em how its done. They'll (use someone else's money to) rebuild. They'll make sure everyone (with the right connections) gets all the oil they need. The oil revenue (will go in their pocket while suckers) will pay for rebuilding.

All "them that gots" need is an excuse.
No one else matters.
It's all about mo' money for "them that gots" money.
It's perfect (if you ignore reality).
God help us all.
Hope I'm wrong.

Gravatar> We can't rule out the use of military force.
> by William Kristol

And just WHERE is his uniform ?
.

Gravatar"The motherfuckers say they have a "right" to have nuclear weapons."

Fu*kin' A. Only the US of A, and our friends, like Pakistan, our ally in the War on Terra, have the right to have nuclear weapons. It's in the Constitution somewhere, I think.

Gravatar"As soon as Israel attacks, we'll be right there beside them."

Or more like right behind them.

Cheney has been trying to get Israel to attack, or at least hinting they could, would, or should, for quite some time. The Israelis are not biting. Maybe they know political rhetoric and mutally assured destruction when they see them.

How bout the Dems pull what the ReThugs did on Murtha. Make a motion to go to war with Iran and open up the debate now.

Sure if they don't the ReThugs will beat the hell out of the war drums in September and October.

GravatarWhen Al Gore gets the prize the US Supreme Court stole from him in 2000-(winners-keepers-losers weepers) and we then in US move toward weaning off the mid-east energy tit and BushWorld Oil interests Iran will become even more emboldened. Therefore Israel will strike them as soon as it is clear that they are enriching uranium for a weapon. Too bad the Iranian leader is such a sicko which will provoke this destruction upon his country. Israel is not gonna wait for US of A to say it's ok? They will kick ass soon I predict

GravatarThere won't be a war, but there will be lots of war talk.

Bring it on! We don't have the funds or the troops to deal the Iran situation.

Talk of another Middle East adventure may be enough to drive moderate Republican over the edge. Exactly where will the forces come from to make sure Iran knows we're serious this time? Are we going to use the drawn-down troops currently in Iraq? How are you going to explain to those men and women that they've got to another, far more difficult new war to wage?

Will Bush propose another tax cut to raise funds? Oh wait...that doesn't work.

Do we expect the British, French and Germans to come with us? Ha!

There are only so many times that you can go back to the well before finding that its been drunk dry.

GravatarPlease. Us and what army? The Empire's fabled military is way too spread out to be able to invade by itself.

Would a couple of bombing sorties -- by us or Israel -- be enough? And if by Israel, would the inevitable price be worth it? Or the cost in inevitably increased terrorism?

Certainly even a couple of sorties would send a fine, clear message about how we're spreading democracy in the Mid East, Oh, wait; I forget that's really just for domectic consumption, has nothing to do with, you should pardon the term, reality.
