By the way, Islam has a tradition of giving a percentage of its income to charity, as a religious duty. Some of those charities have given to causes that turned out to have some connections to terrorists in one way or another. There is a MetroPlex mosque that was investigated for terrorist ties, and exonerated. Hence, reputed alleged terrorist ties. Some of these people use cellphones, which are cheaper in lots. I posted this below, and I'm reposting because I want any D establishment lurkers (are you out there, you overcautious atesticular twits?) to hear it:
I was very active in '04. I walked a lot of miles registering voters. I almost got arrested for advocating for a voter who was being illegally disenfranchised. (I was a registered, D vote protection attorney who had the right to be there and the elections chair called the sheriff anyway.)
I met personally with the Oregon Secretary of State to get some screwups in our county's system corrected.
And now I quit. Alito was my final straw. Know how the Rs use hotbutton issues to invigorate their base? Well, the Dems aren't doing a damn thing to invigorate me. If there's a fight on, I'll be in the front lines. But no fight? Then fuck you. I'll take a nap on my couch. Wake me up when there's either a cloture-proof filibuster of Alito or any MSM talking head or any R pol gets within range of my .22. Otherwise, there's nothing I can do that will make any difference in the current situation and I'm only going to get increasingly suicidal if I keep thinking otherwise.
Thanks for those of you who are trying to cheer me up, btw. You're why I'll still come here sometimes to talk about sex toys or cats or shoe porn or something.

I'll still vote. But (I'm astounded to say), I think function() is partly right. I used to think that I'd vote for ANY D so we could regain the majority. So long as the majority of Ds had better ideas than the majority of Rs, I was willing to support even the bad Ds if they were needed to gain that majority.
Lieberman changed that thinking for me. I wouldn't vote for him if his opponent was Ralph Reed.
So, yeah, my options now are to vote for good Democrats, and stay home for bad Democrats. (And write the DNC a letter explaining why, I suppose.)
Function(), is that a reasonable compromise? Or is it what you've always said? (ie are you a total non-voter, or just a non-voter for bad Ds?)

George Bush and his followers have whipped up this paranoia and hysteria quite deliberately. And as his popularity ratings decline and the 2006 elections approach, the Administration, like a drug addict needing greater and greater doses to satisfy the urge, will ramp up this fear-mongering more and more. We are by no means at the peak of this syndrome, but only half way or so up the mountain.
Would someone on the right care to explain this to me, please?
"...the kind that can't be traced. The kind that have been used by terrorists as detonators..."
If the Federal Government KNOWS this to be a fact, the WHY are they allowing these phones to be sold in the US? Obviously, its a known terrorist tool so why not use the powers of the executive branch to put the sale of such phones out of the reach of terroist within the borders of the US? Be easier to do than illegally spy on Americans.
Okay, so some people will be inconvienced, but such is the price some have to pay for the safety of the Nation.
Then again, perhaps there are a few well connected repug donors to Bush that would go out of business if the sale of such phones were banned.
It does beg the question.

Moonbotica,
RE:
My father believes in benevolent dictatorships, and he believes he should be the benevolent dictator.
How can you possibly construe from what I said below that I believe in dictatorship of any kind?
I believe in representative democracy. That is precisely what governance by a specialized elite that is held accountable to the general populace is. Have I not made that clear? And did I not clarly state also that I myself have no interest in participating directly in governance?
And furthermore, as a member of the left, I am committed to the idea that the populace to whom the elite is held accountable be as educated as possible, and also as able to gain entry into the governing elite as possible.
For you to assert from that that I believe in dictatorships and moreover that I should be the dictator is just a cheap shot.
I am sorry if I sound patronizing, but, well, I am twice your age and have spent a large part of my life thinking about this stuff. I was a "smash the state" anarchist when I was 20 too. Or somewhere between that and a communist, anyway. I had lots of big ideas about how society should be re-organized. But since then I have seen how truly low the frequency of revolutions that actually improve matters for the people is. In the vast majority of cases, revolutions merely create new oligarchies rather than materially changing anything. They are a piss-poor solution to the problem of oligarchy in general.

That is, I believe that de facto acess to the governing elite should be purely via the electoral process. The ability to effectively articulate popular ideas about good governance is a pretty good de facto test for the basic skills required to participate in governement, unfortunate cases like Jesse Ventura notwithstanding.

blerb we (in this reguard Britain) had that in the 18th century and that did not work out very well.
CHrist HAloscan is giving me trouble!
I'm not talking about anything even remotely resembling the government by the landed gentry that England had in the 18th century. They didn't even have universal suffrage than. That was not even a serious movement in Britain until Chartism in the early 19th century, and as you know it did not become a reality until much later even than that.
Again, when I say "elite", I mean a self-selected de facto elite, the qualifications of which are evaluated by a universal, hopefully informed, electorate.
As much as I rue cases like Jesse Ventura or Aaaaahnold, I would not dream of instituting a formal test for candidacy or wrse, of disenfranchising anybody to avoid them. I believe that educating the electorate as much and as well as possible is the only solution to that.

The most stupid thing in this whole stupid mess is the idea that pre-paid cell phones can't be tracked.
Doesn't anyone understand what a cell phone IS? Doesn't anyone have a clue how cell phones WORK?
The only cell phone that can't be tracked is a cell phone that DOES NOT WORK.
