I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

GravatarSHA-ZAMMMMMMMMMMM! Argh!

Gravatarwhy isn't the fact that abramoff was the head of college republicans the suffix to his name? Shouldn't everyone say that everytime he is mentioned, be it on atrios, dailykos, or dean on tv? He was the head of college reupblicans turned lobbyist, not some non partisan hack... attach it to his identity.

GravatarQuestion: Do these morning shows ever fact-check Republicans after their disputed claims? If not, can we start expecting to see them do so?

GravatarAnd the growing irrelevance of the MSM continues apace... you're doing a heckuva job, brown nosers!
-

GravatarLooks like Saturday morning thread overload has set in.

GravatarQuestion: Why does anyone watch these morning shows. They are the most insipid, factless, useless, well you get the picture, waste of time on this earth.

GravatarDisney/Viacom/General Electric infotainment wurl.

They want us to just eat cheetos and google britney.

GravatarTechnically, the US press are a bunch of wankers.

Gravatar"Today's invasion of Iran is sponsored by Disney."]

The decline will be televised.

Gravatarql, good question.

I have never been able to sit down for more than a minute or so to watch the morning shows.

Even when I was stuck at home with two broken ankles.

GravatarSee Josh Marshall this morning; he linked to an analysis that shows Abramoff's clients' giving to Democrats went down after they became his clients.

GravatarThe Corporate Owned News Media is PRAVDA!

Nothing more nothing less.

GravatarTechnically, Matt Lauer is still a flaming pimp of the mainstream media.

GravatarQuestion: Why does anyone watch these morning shows. They are the most insipid, factless, useless, well you get the picture, waste of time on this earth.

Beats the hell out of me....Well, I guess there is some value in finding out just how the corporate propaganda machine is distorting the truth, but I prefer to have it filtered and synopsized for me by people like Atrios. Beyond that, I think it is pretty important that any person who considers him/herself liberal should stop tuning in to this crap. It is one of the few bad things in this world that in fact will go away if enough people ignore it.

GravatarAlso note that the NY Times Poll left out any mention of the word "illegal" when referencing the wiretaps.

The issue of whether the wiretaps were actually authorized by Constitutional authority, is still a point of disagreement between scholars, but the administration's decision not to seek the necessary warrants is, as a matter of fact, illegal. So why wasn't that aspect included in the wording of the questions?

http://medianeedle.blogspot.com/ ...uestioning.html

GravatarIt is one of the few bad things in this world that in fact will go away if enough people ignore it.
blerb

I thought the same thing myself, once. Now I don't agree. If ignored - it will only get much worse!!

GravatarRe: Olbermann's smackdown of
Hayden bullshitting about the
Fourth Ammendment.

Why isn't it front page news?

The head of the NSA lied about
the Fourth Ammendment. Claiming
he was an expert on it.

Where's the liberal media?

GravatarWhen I was an editor at Army Times, I kept wanting to see each "battle" during the Iraqi invasion have a corporate sponsor.

One day I suggested to my boss that we decorate the newsroom in the style of a Victorian whore house. I think she thought I was kidding. Those gannett chain gangers have no sense of humor. Smart but not deep, know what I mean?

GravatarIf Matt Lauer has ever shopped at a supermarket which has at some point sold a pint of milk to somebody guilty of having sex with a minor (as chance would suggest he has), would it be technically correct to say that "Matt Lauer frequents establishments catering to child molesters"?

GravatarLauer is always "full of shit". frankly, he seems to derive the most glee from being so. he is repulsive slime.

GravatarDon't dismiss the MSM - they are a cannon. Remember - they VRWC army of the undead sup on their offal every night. And it's all aimed at us. They are coming for us. They understand the danger we represent to them far better than we understand the danger they represent to us.

GravatarSome soundtrack like the clarion trumpets from monday night football...

"This Battle of Falluja is brought to you by FORD. At FORD, we drive on!" and some such.

GravatarIs there an appropriate gripe line for the Post and for the Today Show? I wrote them both but will be very happy to write or call them again.

If we could send, oh, twenty or thirty thousand angry letters to these people on a moment's notice, I think we'd see some corrections.

Let's overflow their ability to keep up, as we did before. Remember: polite, firm, no unnecessary obscenity, but call them on their lies. Repeatedly.

Don't let them get away with it.

Not. One. Damn. Lie.

GravatarWhat do these people not understand?

Why would Abramoff hand a check to his enemy? GET REAL!

GravatarSuch statements are also implicitly bigoted against Native Americans

GravatarDon't dismiss the MSM - they are a cannon. Remember - they VRWC army of the undead sup on their offal every night. And it's all aimed at us. They are coming for us. They understand the danger we represent to them far better than we understand the danger they represent to us.
reallygonecat

Yes!!!

GravatarLook over there! It's the space shuttle crashing 20 years ago!

GravatarAnd why we're talking accountability. Why isn't the media all over the fact that the lead prosecutor in the Alito case has been appointed a federal judgeship and so will be stepping down from the investigation. And guess who gets to name the new lead. Why our friend Gonzelez, who the fuck else. Motherfuckers.

GravatarNow I don't agree. If ignored - it will only get much worse!!
portia

Isn't television a ratings-driven medium? IF nobody watches, their advertizers won't pay their bills.

GravatarI think those photos of Bush and Abramoff could be of more use to us if they never see the light of day. Face it, they probably only show the usual receiving-line handshakes (I doubt that there would have been a photographer present for any of the real meetings). But properly played up, they could be made out to be far more damning than they really are. If we only had a prominent Democrat who was willing to get on the issue ("there are photos of the President consulting with a convicted felon!")they could be potent tools. I know a photograph is worth way more than a thousand words, but if we don't have them, yet know they exist, we should still use them.
A skillful strategist could play the whole thing out for a week or two, eventually forcing the White House to release the photos to quell the furor, and then imply that there must be something more to hide because the White House stonewalled for so long.

I just don't think we have any skillful strategists.

GravatarAs RonK on Next Hurrah points out, it is the case that in some cases tribes increased their donations to both parties when Abramoff took over. He argues correctly that we have to be careful not to be Rathered on this.

But in terms of what is technically correct, it is safe to say that the proportion of giving to Democrats almost always went down, and that Abramoff *redirected* donations from Democrats and to Republicans.

My metaphor on this is: if I turn up the volume, it increases both the bass and treble, but it would still be misleading to say I "turned up the bass."

Perhaps technically correct, but misleading, just as Blitzer and Lauer's response to Dean have been. Buffoons like RonK still want to say this shows he directed money to Democrats, but this misses the forest for the trees: as a K Streeter, everything he did was to promote one-party rule, and that's why the proportion to Democrats almost always went down.

GravatarThat's not an apology. Lauer should have said "Katie Couric was wrong"

GravatarPortia:

An item in proof is Alito's refusal to be frank about Roe v. Wade. Ginzburg came right out and said she agrees with a woman's right to choose, and was confirmed by a Republican-majority senate.

The Republicans know they're in the minority on a lot of issues, and that fact isn't, indeed mustn't be, acknowledged. That was Molly Ivins' point: if a firm majority of Americans in every poll agree with national health insurance and disagree with the Iraq War and the proposition that Bush is leading an ethical administration, well, why not fight 'em? What's to lose?

GravatarTechnically, Matt Lauer is a "human being". In actuality, he's a walking anus.

GravatarThat Miz Katie sure does have the perkiest colon I've ever seen.

GravatarAbramoff is on record, quoted,
as saying his goal was to
destroy the Democratic party.

Why are we even arguing about this
shit?

GravatarDon't dismiss the MSM - they are a cannon. Remember - they VRWC army of the undead sup on their offal every night. And it's all aimed at us. They are coming for us. They understand the danger we represent to them far better than we understand the danger they represent to us.
reallygonecat

Yes!!!
portia

Butttttt... having run with that crowd I know them and they are not at all scary. the MSM comprises individual weenies and weenetes who individually have no backbone. Separate them from each other and squash. They talk tough but are horrified of being called on real issues of truth.

But what horrifies them even more is when their coverage creates a ruckus that reverberates up to their advertisers.

It's all about the money. I know this sounds obvious, but that fact is the key to turning them back upon themselves.

GravatarThe Today show has been unwatchable for years and years.

GravatarI suppose it's "technically correct" to assert that Lauer and Couric are journalists.

Exact same implication.

GravatarIt isn't hard to dump on Katie, but whe may have actually saved lives with her colonoscopy shtick. She's been guilty of far worse.

GravatarAlso note that the NY Times Poll left out any mention of the word "illegal" when referencing the wiretaps.

This is one, like the 'bipartisan' Abramoff thing, that we'll have to keep hammering away on.

Keep up the noise. It will stick eventually.

GravatarMatt Lauer = Michael Bolton.

GravatarTo be TECHNICALLY correct we should have an INDPENDENT INVESTIGATION.

GravatarHmm...I guess I should've saved my blogwhore for this thread.

Anyway, the only time the msm pushes the WH even a little bit is when the WH refuses to give them even a little info. And the push back is so weak as to be negligible.

GravatarIsn't television a ratings-driven medium? IF nobody watches, their advertizers won't pay their bills.
blerb

We should go after the advertisers, too. Cable news has horrible ratings. They want to keep the Rs in ppower - THAT helps the bottom line.

Gravatar It isn't hard to dump on Katie, but whe may have actually saved lives with her colonoscopy shtick.

Hmmmmm.....

Nah, too easy.

GravatarSteve, Steve, you're trying to make sense. Next you'll be telling me that there have been great American rock bands or something...

Gravataryou fear them, they have won. they are opportunists, growling beasts who can be distracted with a sausage tossed across the yard.

Really. Trust me: they suck and care only about getting paid, keeping their mortgages in the Virginia burbs.

GravatarHas anyone figured out what exactly Chimpy's hands are doing on the cover of Fred Barnes' book?

GravatarI already blogwhored this point but implicit in this WHOLE point of "both did it" is this...

NATIVE AMERICAN MONEY IS MORE TAINTED THAN OTHER MONEY

And that's Bigoted!

GravatarHas anyone figured out what exactly Chimpy's hands are doing on the cover of Fred Barnes' book?
P O'Neill

Pissing on the Constitution?

GravatarAtrios,

A tip of the hat to you.(Again) Truth be known I am so tired of the endless lies and promotion of the Bushits that I avoid it at nearly all costs. I cannot even find it in my heart to watch television anymore for the grievous wounding of the truth that occurs moment to moment. Yet, you maintain the fight and that is a good thing.

I guess maybe the hopelessness is the emotion they are trying to foster. Truth is not something to be spun: yet it is. Lies will be found out: if anyone in the media gave a shit about them.

Thanks again, you are a stalwart warrior for the truth.

GravatarAnybody else wonder why Atrios chose e as his incorrect sum of 2 and 2?

GravatarMatt Lauer with KC and her Sunshine Band are technically whores.

GravatarIt isn't hard to dump on Katie, but whe may have actually saved lives with her
colonoscopy shtick. She's been guilty of far worse.
ProfWombat | Email | 01.28.06 - 11:14 am | #

I know people who absolutely hate
her for that.

I don't get it...I think it was
sort of brave and a good thing to
do.

Not that I'm excusing everything
else she does, but that particular
move was commendable. IMHO.

GravatarI reckon it's technically correct, that if you've seen one colon, then you've seen 'em all.

GravatarHere's an analogy that might work.

You're driving down a street in your home town, and you see a couple of policemen hustling a guy out of a house.

the thing is, the policemen aren't wearing their badges, and they're hustling the guy into an unmarked vehicle.

Now, it being your home town, you recognize the officers. Officers Murphy and Murgatroyd, no doubt about it. They're perfectly entitled to take someone out of their house in handcuffs.

So are you going to say, "Well, everything must be on the up and up because they're the police!" and think no more about it?

Hell no!

You think, "Why the fuck are they dragging a guy out of the house with their badges off and into an unmarked car? What the hell is going on here?"

And you think how much do I really know about Murphy and Murgatroyd?

Because---

--because it smells. It smells reall bad.

GravatarBase of natural logs. Makes sense to me...

Gravatar Has anyone figured out what exactly Chimpy's hands are doing on the cover of Fred Barnes' book?
P O'Neill

Undoubtedly spelling his name wrong.

GravatarOT, as always, of course Atrios in on point:

I badly injured myself last night, leaving my whole face bloody--chin, forehead (especially), left eyebrow, nose in 3 places. I look like a car crash victim, though it was only my bedframe and carpet.

Showering didn't help. What might? I'm eating carrots, supersticially.

GravatarMatt Lauer = Michael Bolton.

Good lord...feel better.

GravatarThe only use for the Democratic Party these days is to provide cover for the corruption of the Republicans.

GravatarThat "hotie" matt lauer and "America's sweetheart" katie couric should be relegated to the dustbin of history. Instead the "hotie" and "America's sweetheart" are very well paid whores for their gop friendly corporation.

Remember when everybodys favorite uncle, charlie gibson of GMA, used his show to attack Kerry with gop talking points?

We ignore them at our peril.

GravatarA thoughtful and brilliant journalist like Matt Lauer comes only once in a generation, if at all. You guys can slime him all you want, but the people at large like him for his attention to detail and the truth. We need a Lauer more than a politician like Dean. Politicians are dime a dozen.

GravatarDraco,

Hope you are feeling better and the injuries aren't too bad.

Now, if I were you I'd lay off the Bush impressions for a while.

Smells like a 400-yard head shot to most of the hunters across the country. Two hundred million firearms in this country. I'm just sayin'.

GravatarDraco, sounds like my accident. Watch for the neck pain tomorrow or the day after. Hope you feel better soon.

GravatarI've said it before and now again:

Rags like the National Enquirer are held at a higher plane for truth in reporting than our MSM. They get sued if they lie.

Gravatarsteve simels--You don't quite offer me a feel-good pill, but it;s good to know you even care. Thanks

GravatarDragged away? Showing No badges? Showing No warrants? No problem. Self-defense rules apply.

GravatarIt is about time someone pointed out the racism involved with Abramoff media coverage. It seems like it is the Naive Indian stereotype again ` those Indians are sure cute, but they just can't deal with civilized laws and steal any chance they get so we gotta keep 'em on the res.

Imagine if this scandal involved African-Americans and was covered by the press in this manner. And then all of the congressional representatives who took money from black groups gave it back nbased on the fact they were black groups.

Here is what has happened - the left is scared of being accused of playing the "race card". Look, even Atrios has meticulously avoided the racial issue even though it is the elephant in the livingroom.

GravatarYou don't quite offer me a feel-good pill, but it;s good to know
you even care. Thanks

Gravatarthe problem is more the type of dem leaders that we have than the whoredom where the russerts and the lauers live.

in last week's MTP, obama was so equivocal in his statements ('mone is a bipartisan problem') that one could almost forgive russert for thinking that he can get away by saying anything against the deams.

such weak performances by the dem leaders are what we should focus on.

GravatarLast thought for the day (because i have to get going):

All these actions - by Bushco, the GOP, lobbyists, the MSM, whoever - they are all directed at the people who scare them - us. That is the more liberal-thinking first, then any of the Great Unwashed Masses so foriegn to their elite.

Fear is not rational. You cannot appease fear. Fear will take actions to be relieved no matter how silly or unlikely the basis of the fear.

These manipulators, unchecked, WILL persist until you are disenfranchised, dispossessed, marginalized, rendered serf or slave or fodder to the ovens. That is the pattern of history.

But the fearful, opposed, can be made afraid enough to NOT act. Be the nightmare. Fight back.

Even as the kid who fights back against the school bully ends up no more beaten, and lives happier with himself, your opposition is.

We may lose Alito. We are likely to lose many times in the next years, swimming against the tides of declining empire.

But history also says that it has always been better to be warrior than serf. "Cry Havoc! And let slip the dogs of war!"
-

GravatarTroutski

See above, I agree totally.

GravatarNBC and WaPo could just freakin explain what they mean, instead of just deliberately obscuring the truth. If you asked most people on the street they wouldn't even know wtf Abramoff did or why he's tainted, and what it actually means that he gave money, cuz everyone gives money, right?

In NBC's case I think it's clear they have an agenda. A deliberate agenda to avoid making BushCo look bad, at any expense. They have zero credibility left, if they ever had any.

There's no reason, especially in print, that someone can't just explore in detail what exactly is going on here in a way that people understand it.. without all the he said/she said crap..

Oh, no wait that would could require journalizing!

GravatarRepublicans. The American Hezbollah.

GravatarA good op-ed in the NYT points out that Chimpy created the Iran crisis by calling for a boycott of the Iranian presidential election last year:

The rise of Mr. Ahmadinejad, and the threat he poses to the stability of a volatile region, demonstrates that promoting apathy in a semi-democratic system can only strengthen the radical anti-democracy forces. And it raises a question as to whether that is what hawks in Washington actually wanted.

GravatarThat was Molly Ivins' point: if a firm majority of Americans in every poll agree with national health insurance and disagree with the Iraq War and the proposition that Bush is leading an ethical administration, well, why not fight 'em? What's to lose?
ProfWombat

brilliant point!! And - Americans are looking for leadership - that means that Dems need to take up these issues and fight like hell for them - that's leadership!

GravatarThe point that Lauer seems to miss is that if Dean was "technically correct" in saying that no Democrats received money from Abramoff, then when Couric said that Democrats received money from Abramoff she was "technically incorrect", or, put another way, "technically lying".

GravatarThe only use for the Democratic Party these days is to provide cover for the
corruption of the Republicans.

GravatarAtrios - you should made your post stronger, starting off with prospect link instead of ending with it.

American Prospect hired a professional agency specializing in political contributions and shared their findings.
From Prospect link:

The analysis shows:

# in total, the donations of Abramoff’s tribal clients to Democrats dropped by nine percent after they hired him, while their donations to Republicans more than doubled, increasing by 135 percent after they signed him up;

# five out of seven of Abramoff’s tribal clients vastly favored Republican candidates over Democratic ones;

# four of the seven began giving substantially more to Republicans than Democrats after he took them on;

# Abramoff’s clients gave well over twice as much to Republicans than Democrats, while tribes not affiliated with Abramoff gave well over twice as much to Democrats than the GOP -- exactly the reverse pattern.

“It’s very hard to see the donations of Abramoff’s clients as a bipartisan greasing of the wheels,” Morris, the firm’s founder and a former investigations editor at the Los Angeles Times, told The Prospect.

This should debunk wapo/NBC/Rove line once for all.

Serious News At Risk

Aaron Brown

Former CNN 'NewsNight' anchor Aaron Brown said important issues, such as the war in Iraq, are being clouded over by 'mud-wrestling' that skirts substance. Brown spoke Tuesday at The Society of the Four Arts.

The anchorman whose boss once characterized him as ice compared with his successor's fire was anything but chilly in the impassioned speech he delivered Tuesday at The Society of the Four Arts.

"Truth no longer matters in the context of politics and, sadly, in the context of cable news," said Aaron Brown, whose four-year period as anchor of CNN's NewsNight ended in November, when network executives gave his job to Anderson Cooper in a bid to push the show's ratings closer to front-runner Fox News.

He's shocked "by how unkind our world has become," he said. E-mail and talk radio appear to have given people the license to say anything, regardless of how cruel or false it may be, he said.

The question is, is the Republican meme that "Indian money is dirty money" or is it only "money from Indians who hired Abramoff as a lobbyist is dirty money". The first is racist (unless further qualified as, say, "Indian money from gambling is dirty money" in which case Indian money is no different from Vegas money), the second not.

Which group of brothers has the most career home runs in Major League Baseball history?
A. The DiMaggios
B. The Boones
C. The Alous
D. None of the above

Correct answer is D. The winner is the Aarons - Hank with 755 and his late brother Tommie had 13.

Of course, Hank alone had more than any of these groups of brothers. Tommie's contribution was negligible.

Thus, even if the Post can produce some napkin where Abramoff wrote the name of some Democrat that his tribal client was going to donate to anyway (and after all this time, even that looks unlikely), at worst, that would make the "bipartisan" tag on this scandal "technically correct" in Lauer's apt phrase.

The Post's PERSISTENCE in pushing the bipartisan angle is as "technically correct" as would be a sports fan who said you should never mention Hank Aaron without also mentioning Tommie.

Employees Sue Over Alleged Mold
Faux News
Two Fox News employees have filed a lawsuit alleging they were sickened by toxic molds and pesticides in a building where some of the network's top shows are produced.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Supreme Court in Manhattan, alleges the employees fell ill in the building where "The O'Reilly Factor" and "At Large with Geraldo Rivera" are produced, as well as "Hannity and Colmes" and "Dayside." It seeks unspecified damages from Fox News and the building's management company.

Fox News spokeswoman Irena Briganti said the federal Occupational, Safety and Health Administration had declined to investigate, and an onsite probe by the state's Department of Environmental Conservation had "fully resolved" the matter.

As you may know, there is something very wrong in Washington, DC these days. Political corruption scandals are distracting our leaders from tending to the business of state. Deficits are up, job cuts are being announced weekly and the prospect for peace in Iraq seems to be slipping further away, rather than getting closer to a reality..

There is good news! Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) PAC has launched, with great anticipation and enthusiasm throughout the political world. This is the start of a political movement to empower the people who pay the price for bad decisions in Washington: Our combat veterans. Specifically, our unique mission is to promote veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan wars who are running for Congress this year.

the View From N.J.

Both of New Jersey's U.S. senators said yesterday that it was premature to support the Kennedy-Kerry call for a filibuster, because they had not announced their intentions on the vote for Samuel A. Alito Jr.'s nomination.

Matthew Miller, a spokesman forSen. Robert Menendez, said the country's newest senator planned to announce his intentions on voting for or against Alito, a fellow New Jerseyan, in a floor speech Monday.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg's spokesman, Alex Formuzis, expressed doubt that a filibuster would materialize. "As far as we know," he said, "there will be a vote for cloture on Monday, and that it will pass, and the Senate will move to vote on the nomination of Mr. Alito on Tuesday."

Maybe if the old fuck would join in and support a NO vote it might "materialize". I would think that two home state senators standing up and saying NO might help that cause.

Monday morning these two need to be hammered. The mailbox of all Lautenberg's offices are currently full.

GravatarAbramoff referred to tribal members as “trogdolytes” and “morons”.

Report that Matt and KC, please.

GravatarI've posted this analogy several times over at firedoglake. First time here:

Let me try to explain it in a way that the media can easilty understand it. Let's pretend that, instead of money, Jack Abramoff was giving out blowjobs. It would be fair to say that Abramoff gave blowjobs to a lot of Republicans. He did not, as far as we know, give blowjobs to any Democrats. As for Abramoff's clients, these are people who were GIVING Abramoff blowjobs, not receiving them from him. While it is true that some of the people who gave Abramoff blowjobs also gave blowjobs to some Democrats, I've seen no evidence that Abramoff was truly directing his clients to give blowjobs to Democrats. In fact, it looks like he was telling them to give the Democrats fewer blowjobs than they had given them in previous years. In any case, it's a hell of a lot different than getting blowjobs from Abramoff himself. Questions?

Gravatarfootloose its something to do heh!

Gravatarmoney from Indians who hired Abramoff as a lobbyist is dirty money"

That one's probably not racist, but it is no more correct than the first one.

Yes, well, the issue was about racism, not about correctness. I do not warrant the correctness of any Republican meme.

It's certainly possible that any client of Abramoff would have had a knowledge of what he was doing with their money, but in the case of the Indians, it seems that they were actually cheated.

It also seems that they might have realized that they were paying Abramoff about four times the going rate too. Perhaps one just doesn't question success too closely.

There may well be other abramoff clients who got bilked as well.

This you can probably count on.

India and Saudi Arabia have agreed to closely and actively cooperate to fight terrorism and other transnational crimes.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud signed a landmark "Delhi Declaration" in the capital on Friday.

Under this, the two sides will work for closer cooperation in the field of information and communication technology, agriculture, bio-techonology and non-conventional energy technologies.

"At climate laboratories of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, for example, many scientists who routinely took calls from reporters five years ago can now do so only if the interview is approved by administration officials in Washington, and then only if a public affairs officer is present or on the phone."

What are we? The goddamn Soviet Union, thats what. Or Iraq under Saddam, or Iran, or Communist China for Christ's sake.

After four years, Enron's Lay and Skilling to face jury

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Four years after the dramatic demise of Enron Corp., former chiefs Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling will enter a federal courtroom in Houston on Monday to face charges linking them to one of the biggest business disasters in U.S. history.

The case against Lay, 63, and Skilling, 52, hinges on whether the two executives, who once enthralled Wall Street by creating a company that became the nation's seventh largest, were aware of Enron's financial shell game that pumped up earnings while hiding billions of dollars in deb

GravatarBush uses Democrats' praise to push Alito vote

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush on Saturday quoted Democratic praise for Samuel Alito in an effort to deter some in the party who want to block nomination of the conservative appeals judge to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Alito is virtually certain to be confirmed next week by the full Republican-led Senate on a largely party-line vote. He could move the country's highest court to the right on abortion and other social issues.

Several prominent Democrats have called for a procedural roadblock called a filibuster to thwart a vote but they lack the necessary support.

It would, however, be more than a little misleading. What can't the Post understand this? Show me a point-by-point connection between Abramoff and the Dems--one that did NOT already exist before Jack came on the scene--or drop it.

As an aside, if they DON'T drop it--which they won't--I hope they're just as determined to maintain their storyline when Tom DeLay's money laundering trial starts.

The other -- I don't remember the

GravatarThe idea that this scandal is "bipartisan" in any way is absurd and nonsensical.

Abramoff's purpose was the destruction of Democrats.

HOW CAN A SCANDAL BE "BIPARTISAN" WHEN THE POINT OF THE SCANDAL IS TO KILL ONE OF THE PARTIES?"

Abramoff and his allies Tom DeLay, Ralph Reed and Karl Rove had two goals: to destroy the Democrats and to enrich themselves and their clients.

Were you aware, Katie? (Tim? Chris? Debbie?) that:

Indian money was directed to NH for phone jamming to kill Democratic chances and high Republican officials were convicted for this?

Abramoff and DeLay's "K Street Project" was systematically designed to elminate or minimize any Democratic influence on legislation, and Corporations were told by the K Street Project to fire their Democratic lobbyists?

Abramoff Indian money was donated to TRM PAC for Texas redistricting to kill Democratic seats?

How can anyone say with a straight face that this scandal is bipartisan?

What can the usual suspect say to that? Well, it's "technically correct" that Republicans used illegal phone jamming funded by Abramoff to steal elections?

BTW, according to imdb.com, Sharon Farrell was also in "LA 2017"...

"Name of the Game" was actually a groundbreaking show for the time - a 90 minute anthology series that rotated between the three stars every week. Kind of the blueprint for the later "NBC Mystery Movie" which had "Columbo," "McMillan and Wife," "McCloud," and "Hec Ramsey"...

It would be nice to think that either Matt or Katie are smart enough to use the Internet, and that they might actually read a blog someday.

However, I'm guessing that they've been in broadcast television long enough for any brain cells they once may have had to have shut down. At the moment they're no doubt glued to the Hollywood Minute for the latest on Britney.

Gravatarwhy the hell should the u.s. be importing chicken from china:

Some chicken imports from China proposed
Critics cite fear over bird flu
By Libby Quaid, Associated Press | January 28, 2006

WASHINGTON -- The Agriculture Department is seeking to allow importing of poultry processed in China, where thousands of birds and several people have died from bird flu.

Critics are urging the department to drop the proposal, and the US industry is raising concerns about how it would affect consumers' perception of chicken safety. The United States does not import poultry from countries where the virulent bird flu strain is present.

Under the department's proposal, the United States still would not accept Chinese chickens. China would have to process poultry slaughtered in the United States or other countries from which it accepts poultry.

The industry did not ask for the proposal, National Chicken Council spokesman Richard Lobb said. Chicken companies test every flock in the nation to reassure people that chicken is safe to eat.

Under the government proposal, the poultry would have to be fully cooked and shelf stable, which basically means it would be canned. ''I'm not defending it, and we are concerned about consumer perceptions, but the fact of the matter is, cooking destroys any virus, so canned food, as long as the canning is done properly, doesn't present any food safety problem," Lobb said.

The Agriculture Department proposed the rule, with no announcement, on Nov. 23. The period during which it accepted comments on the proposal ended Monday. The rule still must be finalized before it takes effect.

GravatarI write letters:

Dear Today show,

Matt Lauer, in response to Howard Dean disputing Katie Couric's unfactual allegation that Abramoff was a equal giver, claimed that DNC chairman Dean's claim was 'technically correct'.

Given the long, and public affiliation between Abramoff and the Republican Party, it's hard to understand why the qualifier 'technically' applied. All of the claims from the Administration that 'people affiliated with Abramoff' gave to democrats are based in deliberate, and shallow distortions of the obvious facts. Abramoff was a lobbyist. His clients were campaign donors. Before they were his clients, many of them gave to Democrats. After they became his clients, in many cases many of them ceased or diminished their contribution to Democrats. In the mean time, Abramoff is charged with bilking his clients by playing them off against each other, which makes his clients his victims, not his accomplices.

So how was Howard Dean's claim that Abramoff didn't give to Democrats 'technically' correct? The only people claiming that Abramoff (or his 'associates') did are trying hard to distance the republican party from a damaging corruption scandal. Everyone who'd even heard of Abramoff more than a few months ago knew he was a complete and outspoken Republican partisan. So all this pretense that there's uncertainty about who he was bribing and how rings completely false.

Additionally, Katie Couric claimed her assertions were backed by a study that in fact refuted her assertions. Does that mean she didn't read the study, or that she didn't understand it. And if she didn't read the study, who TOLD her that the study proved that Abramoff gave to Democrats? Given that this particular piece of misinformation is newly minted since the charges against Abramoff were filed, I'd like to know who at NBC is either generating or passing along Administration talking points as news? This isn't the first time, this isn't even the dozenth time that your morning show has been armed with the latest talking points.

Here's a suggestion for an investigative story. Find out who in your news room is either a party operative or on the take from one to push false information as news.

And again, what about Dean's statement was 'technically' correct?

GravatarOh, and the answer to...

GravatarThankful for the analysis of the MSM presented by Haveskunk. It has seemed that way for a couple of decades, but I never had any insider information to go along with my observation-based beliefs. I think the internet-sphere understands the MSM much better than they understand us, after all, they are slow and arrogant, they are lazy and self-satisfied, they are in a crowd where conformity is king. We have Duncan, and Kos, and Somersby, etc., they have their corporate ringmasters. They are by design too slow to adapt. Ecologically we are the bacteria and fungi: fast to adapt and quick to multiply. They are still looking for the stupid 'magic bullet' that will kill all bacteria and make lots of money. They cannot overcome, time is against them. And they are definitely in trouble. That's why evey story about the layoffs at the major papers has the obligatory line about the business still being 'highly profitable'. The down side is that the Democrats in the Senate are even more ossifed than the MSM. They're still trying to yuck it up with ass-clowns who are lying to save their tony mortgages, these Senators don't even realize how diseased their whores are, or their Joe's for that matter.

GravatarThey are by design too slow to adapt.

Larry, you're on the right track. Also remember that the TV revenue model is entirely based on advertising. Upper management may not even watch the content of their own news shows--their job isn't to be concerned with what's going out, but what's coming in. Most of their employees, even in the newsrooms, aren't really "journalists" in the sense that their priority isn't informing or investigating--it's filling time slots with content that they think will keep people from changing the channel before their sponsors' advertisements come on. Anyone who expects TV news to exhibit some altruistic interest in balance or investigative reporting is living in a fantasy world.

Gravatarwhat did malloy say that got him booted?

WLIB wanted the money it could get for selling the rights to the time-slot. Malloy was pretty sanguine about it.

GravatarI'm sitting here, taking a break from housework.

Listening to the Indigo Girls sing "Mona Lisas and Madhatters." Beautiful.

They do it better than Elton John.

GravatarWe are up against an enemy (Rethugs) that does not care what the consequences are as long as it "wins." They will embrace any kind of dishonesty, swallow any propaganda, tolerate any erosions of civil liberties as long as they can stick it in the libruls' faces. They don't care about "winning" within the law and they don't care about holding their own party leaders accountable.

As long as the "fags, spics and niggers" get kept in their place the rank-and-file Rethugs are happy. They are beyond shame. Republicans have no dignity. They are monsters.

GravatarI loved The Name of the Game when it was on, especially the last season when it looked like they knew they were not going to be renewed and pulled out all the stops and got wierd. That was the season with LA 2013 and, one of my favorites, an episode called "All the Old Familiar Faces" -- it had a kind of fantasmal Greek chorus that would appear as they shifted from scene to scene, singing a song reflecting on what had just happened and what was about to happen in the next scene. Unusual stuff for American tv.

Also, The President's Analyst is a great flick IMO. One of my favorites from the era.

GravatarThe reason they're holding on to it so aggressively is probably because they heard it from Abramoff, who is said to have worked aggressively to push anti-Democrat misinformation personally, and so they believe it like they believe Colin Powell's bottle of talcum powder.

GravatarI don't understand why the Dems who go on the wingnut shows won't keep pushing this. "All your questions seem to be GOP talking points, Chris. How'd that happen? Are you being paid by the RNC, or just volunteering?"

The fringe benefits are great.

He gets to see Prince Fuckwit in a flight suit with his wonderful "package."

GravatarWould someone mind explaining to be ehat's the differenc ebetween being 'technically' correct' and the truth?

The "Abramoff gave to Democrats" meme is still playing on the other channels, so Lauer isn't allowed to come out and say it was wrong (both because it would violate his GOP loyalty oath and because it would make Katie look like a partisan hack, which hurts her value as a partisan hack). So 'technically correct' is sort of a non-apology apology that they hope will pacify the reality based community enough to shut us up and let them get back to advancing the next round of GOP talking points.

I don't know if this is just because the younger generation doesn't understand why abortion really needs to be legal or if the fundies are really gaining more converts. Either way, it is truly disheartening trend. It kind of shatters my ideas about social progress.

The point is that Abramoff was, is, and will be, an extremely partisan Republican who's on record as having called for the destruction of the Democratic party.

When the news media starts framing the Abramoff scandal in those terms, rather than outright lying (Abramoff made contributions to Democrats) or simply dissembling (Abramoff directed money to both parties), I'll start being less militant about it. While it is true that Abramoff clients (if you can call them that) made donations to Democrats, it's not clear how many of those were made at his behest, and it is clear that groups that became his clients reduced their contributions to Democrats.

An honest observer would say "Abramoff directed money to Republicans and away from Democrats, although some of his clients continued to donate to Democrats anyway." Let me know if you ever hear anyone in the corporate media put in those terms.

I've said it repeatedly: the FEC stuff is the table-setter. It establishes JackOff as a GOPerative. But the real story isn't about campaign contributions, but the network of bullshit charities and under-the-table quid pro quos, and the seamless links between the White House and Congress and those money-gathering enterprises.

The prosecutors will (one hopes) make all this clear, but the Dems can't afford to paint themselves into a corner by saying that only FEC-registered contributions are what matter. That lets far too many GOPpers off the hook.

GravatarColmes needs to get all POSTAL on Sean someday

just grab the fucker and start to slap jack shit outta the little nazi fuckwhistle...
WoodyGuthrie'sGuitar(aka

I would PAY to see THAT!

GravatarThe College Repukes need to spend more time with their studies.

The reason they're Repukes is because they're so stupid and ignorant.
Terry C, Coldplayer

The College Republicans need to spend more time getting the shit kicked out of them by the jocks, anarchists, and one or two huge Samoan dudes on campus.

Buzz Bomb

I would PAY to see THAT, too!

GravatarHave you considered that, aluminized free anus?

Wow. Internet threats and name calling. What, are you 8 years old or what?
illuminized freemason

AWWWWWWWWWWWWW. Pouuurrrrr Bway Beeeeee!
Did wittle twoll get called a namesy wamesy? Trolly wolly cry FOULY?

Seriously. It's gotten so bad among the survivors of Katrina that suicide is getting airtime segments, even on CNN. As an advocate of governmetn assisted suicide, you must consider that a viable option for yourself. It would beat taking a stand on saving our way of life from these chicken shit anal polyps you from whom you claim to disassociate yourself.

GravatarSeriously. It's gotten so bad among the survivors of Katrina that suicide is getting airtime segments, even on CNN.

There are still 3,200 people unaccounted for.

Not that Bush Co. gives a shit.

GravatarIt is also true that in other ways he did direct money to Democrats.

BULLSHIT.

I demand proof, troll scum. Where are the emails, where are the memos to support this ridiculous Rethuglican assertion?

Fuck you, fascist shit. There is nothing to support this ridiculous assertion. Jackoff is a felonious scumbag. In other words, a run of the mill, everyday GOP operative.

Gravatarbut I felt he was too deferential to the regime and presented his facts poorly.
Sallyh, Madame Poissonniere

on radio? on tv he is too deferential. no argument there.

he had this one feature that was really unique where he would air callers, one after another, lickity split, allowing 10 seconds each, so that it made a weird stream-of-consciousness effect. it was funny and horrifying at the same time.

GravatarYes, we need Malloy site linkie.

I couldn't believe AAR our of NYC this afternoon. There was an interesting environmental hour, primarily concerned with CA issues. Before that the lamish Satellite Sisters (which had been given WNYC time and did not garner many listeners). Now, it's some sort of sports talk show!!! Covering the Knicks sexual harrassment suit.

Okaaaaaaaaaay.

I was hoping to catch up on the weekday regulars, alas.

GravatarSo when Lauer calls something "technically correct" in a way which implies it's somehow misleading he's full of shit.

He's just being glib.

GravatarActually it was Katie Couric who made the assertion. Howard Dean just pointed out that she was wrong. Why do journalists find it so difficult to be "technically correct"? It is there job to be so.

GravatarIt's completely beside the point whether former College Republican President Abramoff "did" or "didn't" direct some or a lot of money toward Democrats.

The point is, what was the money *for*? What did it *buy*?

The money sent to Republicans set up a slush fund, it was bribes, it illegally bought influence. That's why so many Republican congressmen are under investigation -- they broke the law!

No Democratic congressmen are under investigation, becasue they *didn't break the law*. They just accepted (some, a little, however much) lobbying money -- which may or may not be sleazy, but it isn't against the law.

GravatarThe Today Show......PUKE, PUKE, PUKE, PUKEITY, PUKE.

GravatarAbramoff is about as republican as they come and would rather cut his nuts off than contribute to a Democrat.

Why doesn't anyone understand this simple fact?

He would NEVER KNOWINGLY GIVE MONEY TO A DEMOCRAT.

If a PAC he gave money to then turned around and supported both parties on a particular issue, it's not Abramoff money. It's the PAC's money.
