Among the cautions that must be raised about the survey is just what “success” means. Some of the historians rightly pointed out that it would be hard to argue that the Bush presidency has not so far been a political success—or, for that matter that President Bush has not been remarkably successful in achieving his objectives in Congress. But those meanings of success are by no means incompatible with the assessment that the Bush presidency is a disaster. “His presidency has been remarkably successful,” one historian declared, “in its pursuit of disastrous policies.” “I think the Bush administration has been quite successful in achieving its political objectives,” another commented, “which makes it a disaster for us.”

reposted from below in the fast moving thread cycle.
Sent this to NBC Today Show-
(with my thanks to Dr. Wu) :
As 30-year journalist, let me observe that the back-and-fill by Katie and Matt and the Today Show producers on calling the Abramoff scandal bipartisan reminds me more of my kids when they were in grade school than a professional in the news business. If you get it wrong, that is not good, but not as big a deal as trying to justify an error with weasel words.
You are professionals, you should rise to the challenge.
An honest observer would say "Abramoff directed money to Republicans and away from Democrats, although some of his clients continued to donate to Democrats anyway."
thanks

One of the biggest problems with the Dems is that people like Bob Shrum and Donna Brazile become so entrenched. There is apparently no mechanism for firing them for their ineffectiveness and incompetence. Maybe Howard Dean could do it, but I doubt it.

Bush credibiliity is gone. He will never get it back, and that is why Rove/Cheney/Bush peddles fear.
The media is cowed and bought off. TV "news/talk" shows just don't want to face the heat of calling the Goopers on their shit so they lump in Dems in the Abramoff scandal and ignore the obvious. You can imagine the calls they get from the WH everytime a story dings Bush or Congress. This is just cowardice by the editors and producers.
As Greenwald pointed out but few MSM outlets have reported:
Bush was for FISA before he was against it.
Bush is breaking the law on domestic spying and saying he did not circumvent the law doesnt make black, white.

doesn't matter who is on SCOTUS, elemdorf still gets his fees from Verizon and from Fannie Mae.
maybe if the Party made a rule about "no corporate lobbyists" in the 2006 campaigns, then a new guard, free from connections to large capital formations, would emerge?
Why is that some Democrats seem to think losing will make them look tougher than will winning?

One of the biggest problems with the Dems is that people like Bob Shrum and Donna Brazile become so entrenched.
yeah, and the biggest issue is the bookers for these programs. they determine who represents democrats -- tweety has deedee myers and bob shrum; fox is rehabilitating bob beckel, plus susan estrich; cnn with donna brazile and paul begala.
shrum is supposedly finished in campaign mgmt (long overdue), the rest are just sadsacks (with the exception of begala) trying to keep a toe in the game.
but then, when you factor in the procivilities of the hosts, you understand why those losers are the teevee face of democrats. they're ineffective spokespeople and work to reinforce the image of clueless dems.

This is the first time one of her inflammatory cracks has really made the national news and we should go all Ward Churchill on her. Really push it that this nutjob conservative should be held accountable for wishing that somebody assasinate a Supreme Court Justice. Demand that people stop booking this foam-at-the-mouth for lectures, stop allowing her on tv, fire her from any job she now has, and in general turn her into the mad pariah dog she is. This whole thing with Abramoff is starting to get on my nerves.
I didn't have to see the report from the so-called non-partisan research firm to know that the whole argument rested upon the following...
'Were the tribes giving money to dem candidates and officeholders before hiring Abramoff?'
If the answer is 'yes' then why aren't Dean and others arguing that fact? Why aren't they telling these idiots like Blitzer and Couric that the tribes were already giving money to dems prior to hiring Abramoff so using the tribes continuing act of giving money to dems is holds absolutely no grounds for saying it was done at Abramoff's urging unless they were giving far more than before hiring Abramoff.
Where are the reports of people interviewing the tribal leaders? So far I've not seen a f*cking redskin on the news or talk shows anywhere discussing what they did to help clear the matter nor of any so-called 'media' types interviewing or asking questions of them or quoting any of them.
When are we going to start arguing that this whole Abramoff affair is proof of a complete clusterd*ck of poor investigative journalism? On every case these people have failed to bother to even look up the information at hand.
This tells me the following:
1. Either the likes of Couric and Blitzer are just elitist media snobs who have hired hands do all the work and they just look good on TV reading what their flunkies dig up...
2. Their flunkies are partisans or GOP operatives
3. They themselves are partisans.
4. They're complete elitist snobs who don't see the harm in lying. Who probably laugh at the harm they're causing like guys who get drunk then get behind the wheels of their cars thinking that they never get into accidents, nothing bad ever happens to me so why should I care what happens to other people, or who cares it's only a national election. I'll still have my job tomorrow and if not then I cal always accuse Bill Clinton of being a pedophile and then watch as my resume gets picked up by Fox News?
It's time to get mad at these people. They have no alternatives unless it's to stop interviewing dems entirely. If Howard Dean calls them a liar on national tv, they can call him crazy all they want but who are they going to go to nexttime for a comment? They either go back to Dean or they show their bias and no longer go to Dems for comments.

People talking
And they're saying that you're leaving
So unhappy
With the way that you've been living
Oh oh oh
We always wish for money
We always wish for fame
We think we have the answers
Some things ain't ever gonna change
It doesn't matter who you are
It's all the same
What's in your heart will never change
Look in the mirror
And you see how you've been taken
You won't surrender
But now your heart is breakin'
Oh oh oh
We always wish for money
We always wish for fame
We think we have the answers
Some things ain't ever gonna change
It doesn't matter who you are
It's all the same
What's in your heart will never change
Do you remember
When you got your lucky break
You're looking back now
And it seems like a mistake
Oh oh oh
We always wish for money
We always wish for fame
We think we have the answers
Some things ain't ever gonna change
It doesn't matter who you are
It's all the same
What's in your heart will never change

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A majority of Americans are more likely to vote for a candidate in November's congressional elections who opposes President Bush, and 58 percent consider his second term a failure so far, according to a poll released Thursday.
boo-yah! but like i said long long long long ago, the only poll that really matters is on election day. it's like, prior to this year, the UT longhorns were always ranked highly and then faltered at the end.
so, i'm heartened by those polls, especially the ones in sugarland, but... we shall see.

I turned on my radio… spun the dial
Thought I'd listen to some news for a while
I grabbed the knob, spun it around,
Got NPR… here's what I found…
Real news? Hardly a trace
Just one damn marathon market place
The Nasdaq's up, the Dow's in the cellar
And NPR sold out to Rockefeller
Hostile take over… Real hostile.
Well I hear about all the anti trust
And all the day traders who bit the dust
Mergers, buyouts and acquisitions
Low down crooks in high positions
Wheelers, dealers, and CEO's
Fired and paid off through the nose
Buying yachts and fancy homes
With the bail out money from the savings and loans
And I get pissed… Off that is.
It's dot com this and dot com that
The underwriters are getting fat
On airwaves stole from you and me
By a bunch of thieves called the FCC
They don't give a damn what we want and need
They've all caved in to corporate greed
And sold us out to the ruling class
Well the whole damn bunch can kiss my… …Dot Com!
This is a family show folks
The FCC says watch your language
English
What's yours?
I got tired of being treated like a veg
So I called up the station and canceled my pledge
In a mighty act of liberation
Sent the money off to my community station
I said "I love you"
But if you blow it
I'll sure as hell let you know it
I'll knock the radio off the shelf
Buy a transmitter and do it myself

A warning sign
I missed the good part then I realized
I started looking and the bubble burst
I started looking for excuses
Come on in
I’ve gotta tell you what a state I’m in
I’ve gotta tell you in my loudest tones
I started looking for a warning sign
When the truth is, I miss you
Yeah the truth is, that I miss you, so
A warning sign
You came back to haunt me and I realized
That you were an island and I passed you by
And you were an island to discover
Come on in
I’ve gotta tell you what a state I’m in
I’ve gotta tell you in my loudest tones
That I started looking for a warning sign
When the truth is, I miss you
Yeah the truth is, that I miss you so
And I’m tired I should not have let you go
Ooooooooooooooooo
So I crawl back into your open arms
Yes I crawl back into your open arms
And I crawl back into your open arms
Yes I crawl back into your open arms

Well, this was my letter to Senator Byrd.
I sincerely hope that one of the latter acts of your career will not be the shutting off of debate about the nomination of Samuel Alito in the U.S. Senate. If nothing else, extended debate would provide an opportunity to memorialize those West Virginians killed due to lax mine safety and discuss the federal role, including the courts, in ensuring that no more people die so senselessly.
You have been quoted as saying that you intend to vote for Samuel Alito. That is, of course, your prerogative. But many of us have read the Bar report on Samuel Alito and listened to his testimony and come away with a different opinion. I believe that extended debate might even change your carefully considered decision, because I believe that debate will show that:
• this president is attempting to become a monarch, and that Samuel Alito’s record suggests that he was selected to assist that effort,
• that Samuel Alito sees the law as a system of rules to be adapted to convenience, rather than as the light of eternal moral principles refracted through the Constitution,
• that in Samuel Alito’s legal universe, the merits of the litigants are measured in large part by the size of their purse and who they know,
• That Samuel Alito knowingly and repeatedly lied to the Senate and is not deserving of a seat on the Supreme Court.
The latter is a point I especially commend to your attention. I read the ABA report in detail, focusing on the Vanguard case. I listened to the testimony before the Judiciary Committee by both Samuel Alito and by representatives of the Bar Association. I wrote a detailed response to Michael Greco, head of the ABA.
Briefly, the plaintiff was a widow who was denied access to her late husband’s account by Vanguard. As a result, eventually, she lost her home. Samuel Alito had substantial holdings in Vanguard. Consistent with basic professional standards, he had specifically promised the Judiciary Committee in writing that he would not make any rulings in regard to Vanguard. But he did rule in a case involving Vanguard.
The ABA Committee decided to believe that this was inadvertence rather than a serious ethical violation because:
• Samuel Alito told them so,
• Many people in the legal profession said that Samuel Alito is a nice man,
• He recused himself in many other cases, including Vanguard cases,
• They could not determine a motive for failing to recuse,
• After his ethical violation was discovered, he moved to vacate the decision.
There is an alternate interpretation: that Samuel Alito lied to the Judiciary Committee, that he has an ingratiating, duplicitous personality that deceives people who should be more skeptical, and that in moving to vacate the case he mendaciously claimed he had a right to do the wrong he had clearly done.
If there is extended debate, I believe that your colleagues can persuade you that Samuel Alito would endanger the Constitution and our liberties. However, if I were on the floor, I would as a brother in Christ cite to you James 1:27. I would remind you that neither the Senate nor the ABA talked to the widow whose home was taken by judicial edict in the Vanguard case. She remains voiceless today.
Will you not let the American people hear her side of the story?
You have run such a good race in defending the Constitution and liberty. Please do not falter near the end.

it's a page from the conservative playbook: better to fail standing up for something than to succeed standing for nothing.
Because after fighting and if we lose --we'll be stronger than we were before the fight. Even if we lose - we fought! and Americans will know we'll fight for them.
That's 180 from the the lingo of the rightwing media.
