I suppose we could just assume the high number of Catholics on the court is a statistical anomoly, and I am afraid there isn't anything much more that could be made of it save to note this and refer to it in the furure when there are five women or five gays or five of anything the conservitives think of as 'not quite kosher' on the court.

I'm really ticked at Senator Byrd and back in the skeptical mode about him. He says many of his constituents have called the Dems treatment of Alito during the hearings a disgrace.
I know lots of West Virginians -- tough-minded but soft-hearted and chivalrous folks -- so I can believe they were easily manipulated by the pr machine that sold Dems as boorish in questioning the candidate.
But the truth is that Alito and his handlers were the cowardly, unchivalrous ones, using his family as human shields against the tough questions senators' obligations of due diligence -- especially in these treacherous times -- required them to ask.
Senator Byrd has an obligation, too -- to both listen to and educate his constituents on the way the Republican pr machine manipulates their virtues and values to its own purposes.
He's old enough and wise enough and tough enough to know better. So why is he really voting yes on this guy?

Maybe they wouldn't "win" in keeping Alito off the SCOTUS, but at least they'd have fricking -tried-.
Even if think they'd lose that fight, they don't seem to mind the alternative, which is losing even more support from their base, losing any right to complain about Alito or other fascist judges in the future, losing another reason for people to vote for them, as opposed to the GOP....

Just a few things that bother me:
1) Does the dominant theme of 'worthless piece o' shit Democrats' have its origin in Rove's office? Sure, we've got a lot of WPOS Democrats--but are we being played when Bush is in the worst corner of his Presidensity?
2)On the verge of the filibuster/non-filibuster, some of these 'rumors' at times have me suspicious--and I wonder whether we can base anything on them. Specifically, might these noises be sent out precisely so that people can see how loud is our answering bellow? Might Reid and Obama simply want to see how loud our pro-filibuster, anti-cloture voice is?
3)Who the fuck has time to watch TV morning news before heading out to work? I don't, and no one I know does. Doesn't the audience then consist of the unemployed? (People who work at home (and make money at it) are usually online--and if they have TV's, they're usually tuned to Turmer Classic Movies or Cartoon Network.)

My wife and I are having this discussion - which I say won't be rectified until we get the 'black box' report.
She says the door post, and since it was a side impact, I'm saying it was the center support (for rear door hinges) that carry the seat belt adjuster. The knot on her brainpan sure resembles the outline of that adjuster unit.
Once I can access the black box report in a couple months, I will be able to determine the G forces of the impact and do my own research into the actual parameters of the collision myself, with a couple Deputy friends.
Should be interesting I think.

From down below, 'cause I type so slow...
And now....
Bruce Cockburn's "If I Had a
Rocket Launcher"(live).
I'ma baaaad boy...
I didn't know the house was haunted
Until that night I heard the chains
And yet I stay the night undaunted
By sounds indeed surpassing strange
Cause I knew then what Ill tell you no
It was the proof of the truth of my refrain
Hey, this guy's been dead for 500 years!
And still he's pacing the cage
True love had come without a warning
Just like the love songs say
In the wee hours of the morning
She lit the room as bright as day
And her lips of wine stole this heart of mine
How was I to know that she was underage?
Ah, it's an old old story
And now I'm pacing the cage
You cast your spell yet still your victim
Was drawing breath at break of day
Then came His Majesty a-calling
The Royal Guard led you away
"Thou knewest of the danger when thou tookst the job, milord!"
Quothe the jailer to his captivated Mage
"Hah! Goes it not ever thus?" he laughs
And leaves you pacing the cage
And a couple more I can't remember...
See, this is what can happen when a song gets stuck on your mental turntable, and after a while you start to get sick of the lyrics, so you start to..adjust 'em a bit...

Simple, really. It seems that MTM is a closet Scientologist, and the entity that appeared as the kitten on the too-adorable MTM Enterprises MGM-parody logo is actually an exterrestrial being acting in the capacity of MTM's guide or mentor.
There is a narrow-focus antigrav generator implanted in the statue's head. The few who are aware of this fact know that the device is cloaked and invisible to state-of-the-art imaging systems-- and will self-destruct if physically disturbed.

Question: We have a very athletic junior-high school boy who loves every kind of physical activity.
He gets most of his exercise in PE class every morning, but I happen to know that he doesn't shower afterward. The school no longer makes him or the other kids do it.
When I was a student we were required to clean up after sweating in the gym.
How come this is no longer considered necessary?
Dr. Dobson: Like you, I was required to shower after every gym class. The coach would look us over to make sure we were clean before sending us on our way. Students who didn't shower didn't pass.
But those days are just about over. The reason is because junior-high students are so sensitive about their bodies today that it is very painful for them to have to strip in front of one another.
They vary so much in development at that age that some are grown-up adults and others are still little prepubescent kids. It is nightmarish for the immature youngster to have to put his or her body on display in front of the wolf pack. They would tear him to pieces. Others feel fat or skinny or hairy or (fill in the blank). Increasingly, they resist having to take it all off in the locker room.
When I was a school psychologist, I met with a high school sophomore who absolutely refused to shower. His recalcitrance violated district policy and I was asked to identify his problem. After talking to this boy and seeing how vulnerable he was to the ridicule of his peers, I agreed that he should not be required to humiliate himself five days a week.
Twenty years ago, this lad was an exception. Now, given the body-consciousness of our culture, his attitude is common.
Another factor is that coaches and teachers have become very leery of false charges of sexual abuse.
Even if untrue, a person's entire career could go down the drain just by the suggestion that he or she was enjoying looking at the kids.
This is another reason mandatory showers in schools are being phased out.
The result? Teachers have to work in a classroom full of sweaty adolescents who smell like a gymnasium – or worse.

Meanwhile, the boy's father has to do his part. He needs to mirror and affirm his son's maleness. He can play rough-and-tumble games with his son, in ways that are decidedly different from the games he would play with a little girl. He can help his son learn to throw and catch a ball. He can teach him to pound a square wooden peg into a square hole in a pegboard. He can even take his son with him into the shower, where the boy cannot help but notice that Dad has a penis, just like his, only bigger.

Louise 'Sleeper' Wener: In 1992, the all-female rock band L7 made a ground-breaking appearance on British television. As the final chords clattered from their instruments, lead singer Donita Sparks unzipped her jeans, pulled down her pants and flashed her bare muff at the world. It was the most seditious thing I had ever seen. Since Elvis first shook his hips on The Milton Berle Show the engine of all rock music, its heartbeat, its posture, its very driving force had always been male sexuality. L7 gave you hope that its future might also be female.

On another note: Yes, there is this mushy meme emanating from the most prim, frightened, and craven sheep in the herd baaing the faux-pragmatic notion that the Democratic Party ought only to filibuster if it is sure it will succeed.
This view gains authority when individual Democrats pre-empt or forestall the possibility by publicly declaring against support for a filibuster, alas.
But there's this misguided implication that going forward against the odds can only result in a "loss of face" for the party.
I think the WATB label is overused and overdone, but the "loss of face" concern is really petulance at bottom. It's saying, "Oooh, if we fall on our faces, the media will mock and deride us, and the people will take up the chorus."
And that's true enough. One can practically write the pundit scripts in advance. So, as LfoD is always clamoring, there is all the more reason for the Dems to grow up, stand up, and bench useless face-time hogs like Zsa Zsa Biden in favor of smarter and less conciliatory Democrats.
Try cultivating a consistent assertive stance, as Dean is attempting to cohere, instead of desperately pandering to some amorphous sheeple demographic as you disappear into the quicksand of political irrelevance.

Dr. James Dobson talks about his favorite reading materials:
As the 21st century progresses, it seems that every day brings new extremes of sexual debauchery and degradation. Simply put, our society has become obsessed by perversity. The term "pornography" itself no longer carries much of a stigma culturally, because what was once taboo is now the norm. Obscene material that was confined to seedy bookstores on the wrong side of town is now aired on network or cable television during the "family hour." The formerly top-rated television program "Friends," which now continues in syndication, cavalierly references the male characters’ affinity for "porn" as if it were akin to my appreciation for USC football. Speaking of football, when asked in a recent interview with GQ magazine whether or not he was a "regular" guy who did things like "search the Internet for porn," New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady suggested that he did, saying that he is no "different" than any other guy."

You have to convince your son that looking upon a penis other than his own, or his Dad’s, will kill him.
You must tell him that a penis that is foreign to him will disembowel him where he stands, be it a school locker room, the gym, or in the home of another man. You must place in to his sponge-like brain the horrible images of him being eviscerated by a male sexual organ. Only when he bursts into tears when thinking of a penis will your job be done, and your lineage secured.
Thanks to Herman Hayes and Dr. Dobson, you too can keep your sons straight, well adjusted, and on the narrow path of God-fearing heterosexuality.
Do people actually think like this? Wow!

WGG, what is an ephebophile? Too lazy to look it up.
mer - 3:40 pm
Wikipedia:
Ephebophilia has been variously defined as a sexual preference in which an adult is primarily or exclusively sexually attracted to postpubescent adolescents; that same preference limited to men who are sexually attracted to adolescent boys; or a criminal behavior consisting of sexual abuse of pubescent or post-pubescent minors. It comes from the Greek έφηβος (ephebos) variously defined as "one arrived at puberty," "a youth of 18 who underwent his dokimasia and was registered as a citizen (Athens)," and "arriving at man's estate;" and φιλία (philia) "love/friendship".

Why, yes. Yes, I did. $50 for a $1200 retail, Lane, solid maple with a bevelled glass insert, a shelf under the glass, flared legs and a drawer all dovetailed. No nails. Very nice. Oddly, made in the USA. Another ten bucks for some touching up oil and a bit of wood filler to mend some surface defects. We admire this very much.

It means "we know that 100% of Abramoff's personal contributions went to Republicans; and that Abramoff advised his clients to give to Republicans instead of Democrats. But that makes the Republicans look bad, which makes our management and our shareholders unhappy because they're rich and want the tax cuts. So we'll make some shit up."

Driveby for Democracy: for ayone who cares:
I haven't updated VichyDems's Alito action gameplan for about 12 hours. Damn real world intervened. But here's what's up with the site:
Sometime in the next few hours, I'll put up a new "game plan" list of key senators, with their voicemail and fax numbers and email links. The idea will be that Saturday night and all day Sunday, we'll fill their VMs to overflowing, then fill their email boxes to overflowing, then start sending ridiculous numbers of faxes. If readers will keep me updated, I'll try to indicate whose VMs are full, whose inboxes are full, etc. as it happens.
Then, starting at about 5 am my time (8 am Eastern) Monday morning, when the DC offices start opening again, we'll go back to live phone calls to real people, to FLOOD them with calls all the way to the 4:30 pm cloture vote.
For right now, the site has links to:
1. Sign the Kerry petition.
2. Vote in the CBS poll.
3. Send the automatic fax to a bunch of Senators.
Then, I ask folsk to check the site in about 3 hours for the new "game plan."
Thanks.

The talking points are being polished up and sent out to the Special Bloviating Squads appearing on the Sunday AM fram-o-thons. Goshen – A protest event titled “The Bush Lies Rally” will be held in Goshen, NY on Tuesday Jan. 31, to coincide with the president’s State of the Union speech. Participants will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the Goshen Inn.
The protest will start with a march through Goshen followed by a candlelight vigil with speakers at church square. All are welcome to participate and to speak.
“We will speak as long as anyone has a lie to share which has not been exposed,” stated Michael Sussman of Chester, one of the organizers. “It may be a long evening/morning.”
(From the Jan. 27th. issue of The Chronicle newspaper)
Goshen, NY is approx. 60 miles west of NYC. Take exit 124 from Rte. 17 (Goshen/Florida) and turn towards Goshen. Go about ½ mi. Just past the first traffic light in the village is the church square on the right. The Goshen Inn is on the other side of the church, just across the street.
Please come if possible. Remember to dress warmly, and bring some friends. Thank you.

Early Thursday afternoon, we broke the news that Senator John Kerry
would lead a filibuster against Judge Sam Alito if he could get 41
Senators to sustain the filibuster. Three hours later, CNN confirmed our
story.
Naturally, the White House freaked out and told Senator Bill Frist to
schedule a cloture vote as quickly as possible - Monday at 4:30 p.m. -
to prevent Democrats from uniting behind Kerry.
Then the White House called its media whores at the NY Times (David
Kirkpatrick), AP (Jesse Holland), Pentagon Post (Charles Babington), CNN
(Miles O'Brien), and MSNBC (Chris Matthews) and told them to trash John
Kerry for daring to challenge the will of Emperor Bush, and to repeat
over and over that Democrats did not have enough votes to stop Alito.
But even as Karl Rove was doing his dirty work, progressive activists
like you were calling your Senators urging them to support John Kerry's
filibuster.
And one by one, Democratic Senators began to turn around.
At the start of the day, only Dick Durbin and Debbie Stabenow supported
Kerry and Kennedy. Just before noon, Hillary Clinton's office called to
say she supported us. Then Harry Reid came on board, along with Barbara
Boxer, Russ Feingold, Ron Wyden, Chris Dodd, and (I think) Chuck Schumer.
Most importantly, we even picked up Dianne Feinstein, who just yesterday
said she opposed a filibuster.
That's 12 votes for a filibuster - and exactly 12 more votes than we had
two days ago!
I believe we really can stop Alito by Monday at 4:30 p.m. - but here's
what we must do.
1. Ignore the media whores. Karl Rove is feeding them lies as he always
does, and they are swallowing those lies as they always do. The only
media that matters is the media we are creating right here by calling
each Senator and getting a YES or NO statement from them.
2. Wake up the sleeping bloggers. Where are the biggest blogs, including
DailyKos.com, TalkingPointsMemo.com, CrooksandLiars.com, and
AmericaBlog.com? (Complaining about how Democrats played last week won't
cut it -we're in the Super Bowl and we can win this damn game if we get
Democrats to play their best game on Monday - and hopefully the rest of
this coming week.) Thanks to Agonist, BobGeiger, The Democratic Daily,
DemocraticUnderground, Eschaton, Firedoglake, MakeThemAccountable, Mark
Crispin Miller, PoliticalWire, Vichy Democrats and everyone else who's
plugging this.
3. Keep calling the Senators who are undecided or opposed to a
filibuster. You can call their DC office all weekend and leave polite
but firm voicemails urging the Senators to support Kerry's filibuster.
When offices open on Monday 9 a.m. ET, make another round of calls.
Let's shut down the Capitol switchbo

< Live Free or Die>Yeah, that's what I was on about upthread.
It's stone fucking obvious that the DLC and a bloc of individual politicians buy into this hidebound faux-pragmatism that pretends to be a rope-a-dope clever defensive strategy but which actually resembles catatonia.
(It's like erotic asphyxiation, guys. It feels so right until there is one twist too many or one moment too long.)
So the moderator frames the interview and the Dem is often unprepared and/or remains in a reactionary stance throughout the appearance.
Dean is an exception.
The bottom line is that by now Dems should be fully aware that they are tacking into a toxic wind during every interaction with the media and should be ready for no less. And they need to have the benefit of a unified, assertive, consistent "page" to sing from, to eliminate circular firing squads or hapless confusion.
Fuck the face-time junkies. They've got talent in both houses, bench the Usual Suspects and put in your most skilled advocates and debaters. Learn to give at least as good as you get, especially when, goddamnit, you're in the right.

The 80's was when the USA finally had acknowledged the competition from overseas. It was almost too late by that time but there were a few things some people were trying to do to match the competition. One method was to try to implement "quality circles" which had been invented by an American ignored up to that time by American manufacturing companies, but adapted with a vengeance by the Japanese.
Unfortunately, companies in the US only tried without actually implementing the quality methods.

Heh. I didn't give them the chance to hang up on me. I purchased a Democracy Bond, made one payment, then the Alito debacle came to a head with Byrd coughing up green vomit on the Senate floor. I immediately canceled my bond and force the DSCC and DNC to remove me from their mailing and phone list. I told them that if Alito is confirmed without a proper fight (filibuster) then they will not get a penny of my money nor a hint of my support otherwise.

Agreed. Both are good. I suspect that women do care about looks, but they go through that stage quickly. Like before you talk to someone the first time you've done that "acceptability" test in your brain.

I don't think it proves reliable to men, either, but I think it's like a first level shifting through that we all do. Sometimes we spend more time with the "rejects" and find that they are wonderful. And the other way around. For example, I don't like facial hair, for some reason, so I don't talk to men who have beards or moustaches in that way. But I have had boyfriends with beards because I spent more time with them in a non-dating setup and learned to know them better.

MILFs rule.
There was a funny bit on last week's ER (which I only watch sporadically but lately have been watching as it's after The Office). A teenager calls the Maura Tierney character (don't know her name) a MILF. She replies "I'm not a mother, I'm a doctor." Without missing a beat, the kid shoots back "OK, you're a DILF."
