'Grandpa Munster' Al Lewis Dies at 95 By LARRY McSHANE, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK - Actor Al Lewis, the cigar-chomping patriarch of "The Munsters" whose work as a basketball scout, restaurateur and political candidate never eclipsed his role as Grandpa from the television sitcom, died after several years of failing health. He was 95.

Lewis, with his wife at his bedside, passed away Friday night, said Bernard White, program director at WBAI-FM, where the actor hosted a weekly radio program for years. White made the announcement on the air during the Saturday slot where Lewis usually appeared.
"To say that we will miss his generous, cantankerous, engaging spirit is a profound understatement," White said.

UN agrees to deployment of peacekeepers in Sudan

The UN Security Council, acknowledging the failure of the current strategy for ending the carnage in Darfur, Sudan, agreed on Friday to deploy thousands of peacekeepers to the troubled province.
The US, which holds the council presidency this month, offered the motion, and it was approved unanimously. Officials acknowledged that winning council approval was probably the least difficult step.
The Sudanese government opposes the presence of UN troops in Darfur, and UN officials say it will not be easy to persuade member nations to contribute troops for the new Darfur force. The US has no intention of sending combat troops, officials said.
Assuming those and other challenges are overcome, the first UN troops are not likely to arrive in Darfur for almost a year.
"It's a complicated and operationally, logistically difficult mission," said John Bolton, the US ambassador to the UN.
Still, said Jendayi Frazer, assistant secretary of state for African affairs, "we need to arrest the deteriorating security situation there." At least 30,000 residents of Darfur have been driven from their homes in the last month alone, UN officials said.
The violent and chaotic situation in Darfur poses significant risks that troops would be drawn into firefights with Sudanese government troops and Darfur rebels.
But under the plan, said Kristen Silverberg, another assistant secretary of state, UN troops would be better-armed than the African Union troops patrolling Darfur now. They would also be given new rules of engagement that would allow them to "protect civilians and enforce the cease-fire."
The troops will be given "a robust mandate," Silverberg said.
US and UN officials said they expected the UN force to absorb the 7,000 African Union troops already there, rearm them and then increase the total troop presence to a level between 12,000 and 20,000. More than 200,000 residents of Darfur have been killed since the violence began three years ago, and as many as 3 million rely on international aid for basic sustenance.
In 2004, the US, the UN, the EU and the African Union agreed to send African Union troops to enforce a ceasefire in Darfur, although it broke down almost as soon as it was agreed upon.
Over the following two years, troops from several African nations took up posts in Sudan. But they carried only AK-47 assault rifles and operated under rules of engagement that did not allow them to enter the conflict.
It did not take long for the government troops and Darfur rebel forces to realize that the African Union peacekeepers were a scant deterrent. Starting last summer, the violence began to pick up again. By fall, the peacekeepers became targets; four were killed in October, another last month.
One African Union officer, interviewed in a Darfur military camp in November, complained that "we are sacrificial lambs in a buffer zone."

Amy Goodman: The son of Caribbean-born immigrants, Harry Belafonte grew up on the streets of Harlem and Jamaica. After serving in World War II, he returned to New York and began a successful acting and singing career. Along with his rise to worldwide stardom, Belafonte became deeply involved in the Civil Rights Movement and was close friends with the Rev. Martin Luther King.
In the 1980's he helped initiate the "We Are the World" single which helped raise millions of dollars in aid to Africa. He also hosted former South African President Nelson Mandela on his triumphant visit to the United States. Belafonte has been a longtime critic of U.S. foreign policy, calling for an end to the embargo against Cuba, and opposing policies of war and global oppression.Belafonte spoke at a rally in Caracas, where he commented on President Bush:
"No matter what the greatest tyrant in the world, the greatest terrorist in the world, George W. Bush, says, we're here to tell you: Not hundreds, not thousands, but millions of the American people -- millions -- support your revolution, support your ideas, and yes, expressing our solidarity with you."

Sizemore up for hearing
Los Angeles | Prosecutors accused actor Tom Sizemore of failing another drug test and of getting thrown out of a drug treatment program for arguing with another person.
Deputy District Attorney Sean Carney told a judge that Sizemore violated his probation by testing positive for drugs on Jan. 23 and being ousted from a treatment program Tuesday.
But Sizemore told Superior Court Judge T.K. Herman he was just talking with the other person at the program, adding the man would testify on his behalf when his hearing resumes Tuesday.

The Church of Satan is an organization that promotes Satanism as strictly defined by The Satanic Bible , written in 1969 by Anton Szandor LaVey .

The Church of Satan draws its name from the Christian concept of Satan , and claims that every individual can be his or her own god and is responsible for his or her own destiny . ("Satan" in their usage denotes a symbol and metaphor rather than a literal anthropomorphic deity .) People who follow this belief system are called "Satanists".
It was established in San Francisco on Walpurgisnacht ,1966 by Anton Szandor LaVey, who was the Church's High Priest until his death in 1997 .
The Church of Satan does not have or desire tax-exempt status, though they are eligible. As part of what it refers to as Pentagonal Revisionism the Church of Satan is actively working towards taxation of all churches , and tries to put forth a policy of "responsibility to the responsible". It neither solicits membership nor offers a set course of degrees. Individuals seeking membership must be legally defined as adults by the laws of their nation of residence. The only exception made is for children of members who demonstrate an understanding of the Church philosophy and practices who wish to join. Their participation is limited until they reach legal adulthood. Members are instructed to follow the laws and statutes of their country and municipality. The Church of Satan does not hesitate to expel members for engaging in illegal activity.

After the death of Anton Szandor LaVey, his position as head of the Church of Satan passed on to his common law wife ,Blanche Barton . To this day, Barton remains involved in the Church; however, in 2001 she ceded her position to long-time members Peter H. Gilmore and Peggy Nadramia , the current High Priest and High Priestess who also publish The Black Flame , the official magazine of The Church of Satan. The Central Office of the Church of Satan has also moved from San Francisco to New York City 's " Hell's Kitchen " neighborhood, where the couple resides. The Church of Satan does not recognize any other organizations as holding legitimate claim to Satanism and its practice, though it does recognize that one need not be a member of the Church of Satan to be a Satanist.
Many famous figures have at one time or another been associated with the Church of Satan, including; Jayne Mansfield (though her involvement is highly disputed), King Diamond ,Marilyn Manson ,Boyd Rice ,Marc Almond ,Alkaline Trio vocalist Matt Skiba ,professional wrestler Balls Mahoney , and journalist Michael Moynihan and the artist Coop. As the Church of Satan does not publicly release membership information, it is not known how many members belong to the Church.

On Oct. 26 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, the hope for true world peace came to Minneapolis. The Family Federation for World Peace was officially established here by its co-founder Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon.
Cheryl Landon, daughter of Michael Landon (star of "Little House on the Prairie" and founder of the Landon Center for Practical Spirituality), introduced Dr. Moon to the crowd of more than 600 people. True Mother's speech, entitled "True Parents and True Family," was clear, profound and delivered with her characteristic radiant charm. . ......This is the very mission of the Family Federation for World Peace.... I sincerely hope that each of you will participate in the next marriage blessing of three million six hundred thousand couples. By doing so you will form a true family that can register in the Kingdom of God on Earth."
Following Dr. Moon's talk, letters of welcome from various dignitaries were presented. They included: Arne Carlson, governor of Minnesota; Rod Grams, US Senator from Minnesota; Ed Trabing, president of Minnesota Korean War Veterans; Rev. John Tranberg, Vietnamese Minnesotans Association; Olaf Thomas, urban representative of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe; Nghi Hyunh, editor/publisher, Asian American Press; and Imam Taha Tawil, chairman, Islamic Council of Iowa.
True Mother took a special interest in the Korean War Veterans. Upon the inspiration of Rev. Hun Suk Lee, Jim Gavin went to visit Ed Trabing, president of the Korean War Veterans, and a genuine rapport quickly developed between them.
