GravatarGWPDA:

can you spare a handful of those oranges for the HiChiHuaHuan????

GravatarLet it snow!
Let it snowe!
Let it Snowe!

GravatarEvening, all.

I note that ashole fy is stinking
up the place downstairs.

What a dickweed.

GravatarHi Steve: Mr. QL went nuts and bought enough food for three days. How are you holding up?

Gravatarnterrogated for 18 to 20 hours a day for 48 of 54 days; he had water dripped on his head and was blasted with cold air-conditioning and loud music to keep him awake; his beard and head were shaved; he was forced to wear a bra and panties and to dance with a male jailer; he was hooded; he was menaced with a dog, told to bark like one and led around on a leash; he was pumped full of intravenous fluids and forced to urinate on himself; he was straddled by a female interrogator and stripped naked; and more -- all under a list of interrogation methods personally approved by Rumsfeld.

Donald Rumsfeld is one sick bastard. Can we send him to the Hague now? Tell me again how Saddam had to be replaced because he tortured people???

GravatarSo are you saying Stuart Taylor is a flip-flopper? We all know how bad those are.

GravatarWait! Does GWPDA have oranges???

GravatarWell, I always thought it was more damning to have a supporter abandon and accuse you than someone who was against you from the very beginning. We need more and more and more people pulling a Stuart Taylor on those criminals.

But this guy should come clean and offer an explanation of what made him do this 180.

GravatarIt's amazing how many things we all have been bitching about for years, and decried for years against -- all now being confirmed by some of those who originally condemned us.

Not that there will be any apologies of course.

GravatarI don't read the National Journal, but I remember Taylor as Ken Starr's reliable media advocate. He used to meet one of Starr's top staffers for 'friendly drinks, unrelated to either's profession'; and then he'd go on TeeVee sputtering with righteous indignation that Ken Starr was an American Hero striving to save America from the Clenis.
If I were a shallow sort of person, I would point out that Mr Taylor looks like the kind of guy who never has a date he doesn't pay for or inflate, but I am a man of decency, honor, principle, and whatever else Taylor used to blather about Ken "The Forger" Starr, so I won't say that about him.

GravatarWell, shit. It IS snowing too badly to make it to the Kennedy Center.

Gravatarql--are they expecting a lot of snow for the nyc area?

GravatarWait! Does GWPDA have oranges???
Hecate Malificent

Yeah! And if they're as good as they were last year, I'll end up with Vitamin C poisoning!

Those were the best oranges ever, which is why my check was mailed to her earlier this week!

GravatarI couldn't do that to or drop napalm on anybody for any reason. What horror created so many people who will do these things and follow those blindly who tell them to?

Gravatarfrom the link

This logic would be understandable if the end of protecting American lives justified any and all means, including the wrecking of many more innocent non-American lives. So, too, would be the torture (or near-torture) in late 2002 of the above-mentioned al-Kahtani... interrogated for 18 to 20 hours a day for 48 of 54 days; he had water dripped on his head and was blasted with cold air-conditioning and loud music to keep him awake; his beard and head were shaved; he was forced to wear a bra and panties and to dance with a male jailer; he was hooded; he was menaced with a dog, told to bark like one and led around on a leash; he was pumped full of intravenous fluids and forced to urinate on himself; he was straddled by a female interrogator and stripped naked; and more -- all under a list of interrogation methods personally approved by Rumsfeld. Al-Kahtani may well have had valuable information. But it appears that many other detainees who had no information... have been put through "humiliating acts, solitary confinement, temperature extremes, use of forced positions" in a systematic effort to break their wills that is "tantamount to torture."...

I cannot believe this is my country.

GravatarWe were just watching that guy who was tortured by Saudis and pretty much abandoned by the Canadian government. In addition to this, one of the collective was recently in a very painful medical condition that certainly felt like organ failure and at the time resulted in a perfect willingness to convert to a new religion, attack children, or in general do anything in response to it. The good thing about this is that the individual is now empirically certain of the evil and tactical uselessness of torture in a way that none of its non-serving advocates can be. All of this begs the question: what are some things can we do to respond to torturers? Should civil trials be followed with lynchings to tell the world that we really aren't a nation of Nazis? The Busheviki are all connected rich bastards who will go to their graves wealthy, comfortable and thoroughly insulated from public opinion.

GravatarNot that there will be any apologies of course.
Attaturk

Of course not. And the conservatives will assert that it is incredibly bad form to point that out.

GravatarHi Hecate - Didn't mean to step on your toes. Taking good care of Fritz this weekend?

GravatarFeh, indeed.

GravatarRemember, even some German military managed to throw a grenade at Hitler. It bounced off his head and exploded by his side.

They were all hung by piano wire for their efforts.

GravatarIt's amazing how many things we all have been bitching about for years, and decried for years against -- all now being confirmed by some of those who originally condemned us.

GravatarWell, shit. It IS snowing too badly to make it to the Kennedy Center.
Hecate Malificent

I'm sorry. What are you missing?

Where is *our* snow!? I'm starting to get a little bitter...

GravatarTaylor must have undergone a lobotomy.

GravatarTaylor was for torture before he was kinda against it.

GravatarHi Steve: Mr. QL went nuts and bought enough food for three days. How are you
holding up?
ql in ny | 02.11.06 - 5:40 pm | #

Not bad, kiddo. But I think this
snow storm is going to less
than advertised.

Fortunately, I don't have to stock
up because my upstairs neighbor
is a three star chef and he feeds me
whenever he's
engaged in a cooking marathon,
which he is today.

GravatarAl-Kahtani may well have had valuable information.

Even if he did, torture does not guarantee we will have it, too.

It does guarantee the information is probably worthless. And that we are the criminal barbarians we are supposed to be protecting ourselves from.

We are the new Rome. We bring the glories of civilization to the benighted, and we torture them if they don't accept it.

GravatarWait! Does GWPDA have oranges???
Hecate Malificent - 5:41 pm

so she says...last year's were great...

GravatarAll your base are belong to us.

GravatarUntil we get a new President who can get us a seat at the ICC, I don't see how we're going to be taken seriously by the rest of the new world order.
Shouldn't the "World's only remaining Super Duper Power" lead by example?!
Ummm, never mind.

Gravatar ql--are they expecting a lot of snow for the nyc area?

Yesterday they were calling for 15 inches. Today, 5-8, but from Hecate it sounds like we might be getting more.

GravatarTell me again how Saddam had to be replaced because he tortured people???
Hecate Malificent

Of interest to the intelligensia, the wingers I know have shifted the meme from torture to mass-murders. And no, none of them are willing to accept that the mass-murders in question were of Kurds that Bush the Elder Elistist Swine encourage to overthrow Saddam and laughed uncontrollably as they did and he just yelled, "Pysche!" over and over again while Oliver North hoovered Dick Cheney.

I keep telling you that you are universally lovable. How nice that a neighbor looks out for you like that.

And what a bonus that he's a chef! Those crab thingys sounded wonderful!

Abramoff photo with chimp and fat karl at the WH surfaces in NYT tomorrow.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 11 — After weeks in which the White House has declined to release pictures of President Bush with Jack Abramoff, the disgraced lobbyist, the first photograph to be published of the two men shows a small, partly obscured image of Mr. Abramoff looking on from the background as Mr. Bush greets a Texas Indian chief in May 2001.

they haven't changed our forecast here in ma. still the same 10-14 for interior central.

the reason why i talk about the weather so much is because i can't coherently type out all my outrage over these fuckheads ruining the country.

Looks like one of them widely attended holiday functions to me.

GravatarAl-Kahtani may well have had valuable information.

It is the equivalent of saying people or resources we want to save or have for our own use are in a village, so let's bomb it flat.

GravatarQl,

I can't believe that it's American in the 21st Century doing these things. I just can't. How incredibly sick and evil Bush, Rumsfeld, Rice, et al. are.

BTW, This would be a greqat snowly weekend to be snowed in with Fitz!

GravatarI couldn't do that to or drop napalm on anybody for any reason. What horror created so many people who will do these things and follow those blindly who tell them to?
Luke

An excellent question for which I have heard no answers.

In all seriousness, what sort of person would sit on an old man's chest until his ribs broke? What sort of person would beat a cab drivers legs until he dies? What sort of person would up and shoot a prisoner in the head? What sort of person would encourage their subordinates to perform such acts?

These people should not be in government. These people should be in manacles deep inside some high security facility for the criminally insane. And no, I do not exagerate.

75 degrees in sunny Kawliifornya.

GravatarOut here Boulder way we've had one of the mildest winters I've experienced in 15 years. We did get some snow this week, but barely 1/3 of a Gannon.

Gravataris the laurabot in italy?

It's a sad day when you realize that the original Nazis were better, braver people than the ones we have today.

We got 3"-6" in Gnashvegas overnight.

GravatarDershowitz' torture warrants idea is the most evil of ideas from a supposedly rational man that represents to me the absolute heighth of arrogance and sickness.

Gravatar"her eyes" - that's cool; just read and learn and the words will come.
Like what "Chocolate Proton!" just said: I hadn't noticed the meme shifting from "they are the torturers" to "they are the mass-murderers".
See? We learn something new every day at the School of Eschaton!

GravatarI started reading, but couldn't continue. This is not to my liking. What a fucked up country.

GravatarFirst lady to lead Olympic delegation.

GravatarDershowitz is a putz. If you want some grins, go read his student evaluations at Ratemyprofessors.com. It's an evil set-up, but most of his students have his number.

Yes, but you see, because we have frigid winters and unbearably humid summers, we appreciate fall and spring more than you do. Or something.

Drudge has "flash" about Pickles saying Hillary has gone too far. The quote is from an ABC report and the closing line is the reportron, Robin somebody, saying "Thank you so much Mrs Bush, gracious and well-spoken, as always."

that darn liberal media!!!

Lucky indeed.

And he's taught me a few recipes....

GravatarGenerally "Rate My Professors" is a way for stupid non-comprehending failures to get back at profs who may or may not be their betters. You might also check out Norman Finkelstein's long-running feud with Dershowitless, including his new book (Beyond Chutzpah) which is largely devoted to explaining why Harvard is a massive pile of shit for giving Dershotwitless a place to stay.

GravatarWe got married in Boulder...12 years ago the 20th of this month.
Seems like only yesterday! (Sigh)

GravatarWe left out that in a way it's almost like a nonpartisan form of that Zionist attempted purge at Columbia or Horowitz's disgusting loyalty lists, in the way you could have idiot students just being mean.

GravatarYes, but you see, because we have frigid winters and unbearably humid summers, we appre

Definitely wouldn't mind trading.

GravatarGenerally "Rate My Professors" is a way for stupid non-comprehending failures to get back at profs who may or may not be their betters

Yup, that's why I called it evil. Their first category is "easiness" and a depressing number fo the students refer to themselves as "kids". An entire generation of lazy little shrub-clones, their minds destroyed by their own sense of entitlement.

But in Dershowitz's case, I'm willing to side with the kids.

Gravatar(sheets)

Of course in Dersh's case a lot of what's said can be confirmed externally (his absenteeism, his not really being a scholar, his being the least qualified faculty member there, his rudeness, his lack of scholarlyt papers or contributions, etc)

It's communal -- it's for the use of all the condo-dwellers. They have a grumpy old bastard who runs you out a half-hour before it's supposed to close, too. I used to do some of my best bloggin', there.

lead them? lead them where? who is "leading" the delegations from other countries?

Gravatar just posted this at Jeffers' site, where there's an excellent meditation on the subject...

The ticking bomb theory, taken to its logical conclusion, would permit the application of torture to any suspect.

And any torture could be rationalized.

But its most serious flaw is that it assumes that ANY given suspect--no matter how identified as such-- necessarily has the information required to thwart the putative plot.

Interrogation of this type seems directed at affirming known or assumed information,--or, in the grand old european tradition, punishing heterodoxy; but not at uncovering unknown information, such as that which--speculatively--would prevent the impending catastrophe.

The big question in that regime is: How, then, thereafter, does one discern a true revelation from a false one? If as interrogator one does not know the information which is relevant and that which is not, how is it possible to assess the truth value of assertions extracted by torture, or by any other means?
.

GravatarTaylor dearly wanted to take a job as a dollar-a-year man in Starr's shop, but his family talked him out of it. Of Starr, Taylor wrote:

"He is everything that Clinton is not: honest, principled, and utterly inept at spin. But the facts in Starr's report will pop the rivets in Clinton's fragile ship."

It's that sort of insight, assuredly, that landed him his spot as a Brookings Fellow. Ugh.

While Pickles is away, Condi will play.

GravatarThink someone might ask Taylor on the record what caused him to change his mind about the Bush cabal and bring up some of his early pronouncements standing in stark contrast to his present views? Probably not.
