CIA-Leak Case May Hand
War Critics Momentum,
But Legal Issues Are Slim
By ANNE MARIE SQUEO and JOHN D. MCKINNON
February 11, 2006; Page A4
WASHINGTON -- The disclosure that Vice President Dick Cheney may have authorized his former chief of staff to release classified information to justify the war in Iraq has political consequences for the White House, but the legal fallout may be muted.
Mr. Cheney, in his role as second-in-command of the country, has significant leeway, albeit not as much as the president, to declassify information . . . .
I will use little words. It was not about telling secrets: it IS about breaking the law. Whether the dick can tell secret information does not matter: he can not tell about a secret agent. It is against the law.

What should Iraq vets feel when confronted with thanks by one of those morons who papers their car in Chinese magnets? It is very awkward for both of us, an afterwards kei always feels murderously angry. It is like their "thanks" is actually an aggressive way of pushing an unacceptable meaning of the rape of Iraq onto you. Is there some polite way to say, your thanks are mendacious, no thinking person is proud of the way Bush is destroying several countries includies our own? But it's so hard to say somthing like this, especially to a relative at a party who "means well"

OT - my email to the Associated Press...
In two stories you have recently published attemping to connect
Senator Reid with Jack Abramoff's efforts on behalf of his clients
to keep the minimum wage on the Marianas Islands low, you neglected
to mention what is probably the most crucial detail of the story.
Senator Reid opposed those efforts and in fact cosponsored legislation
to increase that minimum wage. There is absolutely no ethical excuse
whatsoever for making such an omission.
Is generating a "big story" so important to the AP that you
are willing to fabricate, by lies of omission, a scandal where
there is none? After two shameful stories, it looks to me like
you are carrying on a deliberate smear compaign against Senator
Reid. Am I wrong?
-----
Tell the AP what you think of their "reporting" ...
"The mental damage to these troops is stunning. So many need mental help after coming home from this 'frontless' war where everyone is the enemy and collateral damage is seen for what it actually is."

Poor LauraBot. It must be either jet lag or her meds need to be dialed in. She seems to have forgotten this:
"Laura Bush criticized Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Wednesday for suggesting that the Republican-controlled House is run like a plantation where dissenting voices are ignored.

But outside the hospital unit, the general looked grim. "There's not a kid in that unit who knew what they were getting into," he said. "When I asked them, are you ready to go?, they would say, 'Yes, sir.' But then I'd look at those 18-, 19-, 20-year-olds, two weeks out of boot camp, and thought, no, they are not ready for this struggle. I knew how scared they were, how reluctant they were."
He added, "Men like this one have shown more courage than we had the right to expect from them."

Last week, Col. Janis Karpinski told a panel of judges at the Commission of Inquiry for Crimes against Humanity Committed by the Bush Administration in New York that several women had died of dehydration because they refused to drink liquids late in the day. They were afraid of being assaulted or even raped by male soldiers if they had to use the women's latrine after dark.
The latrine for female soldiers at Camp Victory wasn't located near their barracks, so they had to go outside if they needed to use the bathroom. "There were no lights near any of their facilities, so women were doubly easy targets in the dark of the night," Karpinski told retired US Army Col. David Hackworth in a September 2004 interview.
It was there that male soldiers assaulted and raped women soldiers. So the women took matters into their own hands. They didn't drink in the late afternoon so they wouldn't have to urinate at night. They didn't get raped. But some died of dehydration in the desert heat, Karpinski said.
one of these days I'm going to go too far and get arrested for sure

Corporals Beyers and Schilling remained down. Marines carrying thick pads stopped their bleeding. One marine, trained as a combat lifesaver, placed tourniquets on their legs. A medic gave them shots of morphine. Then, to signal to caregivers that the men had been given the drug, he dipped his finger in their blood and wrote an M on each marine's forehead.
Most all of them put themselves in harm's way and fight for each other, and more so with experience and multiple tours. Of those, many will give polite lip-support for Bush's folly when in civilian or mixed company - but they know what's up because they've seen it up close.

Escaping the attention of the mainstream media at the end of January was a panel held by mental-health professionals at the National Press Club in Washington, in which it was revealed that up to one-third of Iraq war Veterans will suffer from some degree of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Speaking on the panel was Antonette Zeiss, deputy chief consultant for mental health services at the Department of Veterans Affairs, who said that up to 40,000 soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan show symptoms of PTSD.
...
The National Center for PTSD also reports the following alarming statistics that map directly to increased rates of PTSD among Iraq war Veterans:
--94 percent of soldiers in Iraq reported receiving small-arms fire
--86 percent reported knowing someone who was seriously injured or killed
--68 percent reported seeing dead or seriously injured Americans
--51 percent reported handling or uncovering human remains

Yeah, we were going to say something about it too. The thing is it could be salvaged: some rapists will develop skills and assemble what police call a "rape kit" (usually a knapsack or kerchief with lengths of rope, a small mirror/hasty periscope, maybe a knife or some pills, etc) and a consistent MO that seems to work. It seems impossible now that we think of it that a person could get into a certain way of thining about sex over there and then come home and magically transition to normality. It was a thoughtless comment in terms of the way it was cast off and sounded like they're conciously planning and it was about everybody over there but there is some substance to it.

So, have you heard about the music teacher in a school near Denver suspended for having shown the kids a tape on operas (including Faust). With handpuppets. Why was she suspended? For glorifying Satan of course!
Some choice quotes: "Any adult with common sense would not think that video was appropriate for a young person to see. I'm not sure it's appropriate for a high school student," Robby Warner said after two of her children saw the video. Another parent, Casey Goodwin, said, "I think it glorifies Satan in some way."
There's a support site set up for her here. Here's some other opera-based lesson plans from local alternative weekly Westword:
Vincenzo Bellini's Norma: Have kids out of wedlock and you could get burned -- at the stake.
Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto: If you had a hump and a limp, you'd want a handicapped parking space, too.
Wolfgang Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte: You can resolve jealousy issues without violence. (Get counseling.)
Verdi's La Traviata: If you don't take your medicine, you'll cough yourself to death.
Giacomo Puccini's La Tosca: To defend yourself against sexual abuse, stab the perp.
Gioacchino Rossini's The Barber of Seville: Gay people can really be clever --Carson Kressley is nothing compared to Figaro. (This opera also teaches the values of recycling, since Rossini used the overture from a previous, less successful show.)
Rossini's Cinderella: Charity has its own virtues. (This opera is guaranteed to make you give to Toys for Tots.)
Georges Bizet's Carmen: If you're a tease, you're going to get it in the end. (And smoking will kill you, too.)
Richard Wagner's The Flying Dutchman: There are better ways to share needles, the "Sewing Chorus" shows.
Puccini's La Bohème: Never give up on your dreams, even though you'll probably be living in a freezing attic forever.
Puccini's Madame Butterfly: The U.S. Armed Forces keep their promises.
Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel: None of this would have happened if the kids had just been in school.
I blogger about this the other week. You have GOT to go read Katherine Boo's article in the New Yorker called "Swamp Nurse." You'll see the kind of young people who have NO other choice than to go to Iraq. Hint: They are NOT college Republicans.

Terry C does need to be clearer, though. This isn't the first time we thought she should cycle thoughts a few more times before hitting Publish.
But their situation doesn't really compare to Tailhook or the Air Force Academy outrages.
The main difference being that was peacetime, institutionalized (Co's watching and approving), with plenty of other avenues. Here you have the stress of war without any kind of release; you put a perfectly normal man in the right situation and he will eventually turn into a rapist or molester. There are situations we are not meant to be in. In Ariel Dorfman's DatM, there is a certain emphasis on the fact that the doctor wasn't a "ticking time bomb" or someone who went into medicine to be abusive, but he became aware of certain power he now had and it became too tempting to take advantage of it.

I disagree. In my world, assaulting, raping, and killing a woman is always worse than simple assault, sexual coersion, assault & rape, and generalized contempt for women.
It's clear, I think, that several of the services, the Navy comes to mind most frequently, have an institutionalized hatred of women for reasons that are not entirely clear to me. In fact, I just don't get it. But that doesn't blind me to the fact that it is there.
As bad as an inbred institutional bias is, and it's pretty bad, I can't say that it is worse than what is happening in Iraq on a daily basis. It's not just the assaults, rapes, and associated killings; it's also the forced strategies to avoid the assaults, rapes, and murders that tragically end in death.
I, too, feel sorry for this group of troops. They are utterly without moral leadership of any sort. There is NO ONE who can stand up and say, "Follow me and do as I do." What do we have over there? An officer corps that is party to torture, kidnapping, extortion, murder, rape, and who knows what else? As a veteran, I have no respect for those officers, and I'm sure their NCOs and junior enlisted folks have even less respect than I do for them. One cannot respect and follow a corrupt person without losing something vital within.

If by downtown you mean near Dupont, yes. She doesn't have a car, so she will be fine. Worried a bit about the Metro and getting to work on Monday.
My other one will be flying back from CO on Monday, but she should be okay, too.

Hey Richard,
You are full of shit.
I don't troll although what I have to say could be interprated as nonsense. Sure.
But the rest of what you say is just bullshit. I'm not trying to bother anyone or calling anyone a troll like you. I have changed my name a because I was tired of it but so what. No one pays any attention to me anyway. Except you.
Danny Guam
I don't crave attention I'm just bored, and the reactions to my posts and others here are soemtimes funny and mildly entertaining. I'm a liberal and this thread, at least the part I am involved in has nothing to do with politics. I think the people who bandy about the word "brownshirt" in a thread that is mostly about culture and NOT politics or ideology are those ones who crave attention. I'm having a pretty good time myself, typing, reading others comments, and marveling at some peoples obsession with themselves as some sort of team leader or haloscan guru judges. Go back to being worried about trolls. Find some more blogposts to post on haloscan. Your a real journalist, keep up the good work.

This is the story I find troubling. Snipers can take on a kind of popularized heroic persona. An occupying army is particularly vunerable them, especially in urban settings. You need look no farther than how long it took to catch the DC sniper.
A few months ago the word was it was a Chechen operating out of Fallujah. Whoever it is, it's not good news that he's getting air play about his success.

It's clear, I think, that several of the services, the Navy comes to mind most frequently, have an institutionalized hatred of women for reasons that are not entirely clear to me. In fact, I just don't get it. But that doesn't blind me to the fact that it is there.
Oh, I totally agree. But since I've never been in the military, I have that impression because of what I've read about Tailhook, etc.
I, too, feel sorry for this group of troops. They are utterly without moral leadership of any sort. There is NO ONE who can stand up and say, "Follow me and do as I do."
That and the rest of your comment describes exactly what's most tragic here. That and the fact that these troops know that they serve no higher purpose - they are not protecting America or advancing freedom and democracy.
It must have been a bitter pill to swallow.

kei & yuri
I respectfully disagree. As a former practicing militarist it is my experience that with good leadership from people who are themselves solid, morally upright (i.e., NOT Republicans), and responsible, any number of troops can be subjected to high stress combat situations for long periods of time and not morph into either rapists or molesters of any sort.
What we no longer have is an officer corps with decent moral values.

So rape by fellow troops is part of the territory? So generals seeing troops as whores is part of the territory. So generals seeing troops as women troops as expendable. So generals covering up crimes on soldiers is part of the territory?

Ugh, that's a fucking depressing article.
Yep.
I have a student in class this semester. I asked them to write about the worst job they'd ever had. His? Soldier in Afghanistan. He talked about providing sniper cover to keep people in a town when the airstrikes were called in, then going in to scope out the damage. He said he lifted a fallen wall to find a woman and a baby, still at the breast, both dead.

Jeebus. I never know quite what to make of these articles; this kid, Schilling, insisting that "it" was all worth losing his leg. Whatever "it" is. Asking him to explain would just be counter-productive. The reality of "it" all is profoundly depressing, and hopefully his Marine training will help him to cope with all that in a productive way.
But Christ. He's only 21 years old. He has his whole life ahead of him, which just makes it all the more depressing. Bush and Cheney and Rummy certainly don't deserve the likes of Corporal Schilling.
This excerpt took me by surprise:
In Landstuhl, a picturesque German town with green trees, rolling hills and beer gardens, the initial relief of surviving a blast or a firefight begins to fade for wounded soldiers. In a place that looks more like home, reality creeps in. Visitors told Corporal Schilling to stay positive. One of them was Maj. Gen. John J. McCarthy, deputy commander of the Marine forces in Europe.
So, is Rummy going to have General McCarthy counting caribou shit in Nome henceforth, or were his words carefully measured enough for the pleasure of the boy-king and his regents? This is not a buck private, this is a major general, a deputy commander. This seems big, too big to be stuffed into the middle of a long article.

This is from a column written by Bob Herbert in November 2004:
"It was the lightest tap on my door that I've ever heard in my life," said Paula Zasadny, the mother of Specia list Holly McGeogh, a 19-year-old who was killed by a bomb in Kirkuk.
"I opened the door and I seen the man in the dress greens and I knew. I immediately knew. But I thought that if, as long as I didn't let him in, he couldn't tell me. And then it - none of that would've happened. So he kept saying, 'Ma'am, I need to come in.' And I kept telling him, 'I'm sorry, but you can't come in.' "

Would that it were so. The troops might then think twice about following blatantly illegal orders. However, what experience has shown is that the junior person is the one who gets charged and gets away with a slap on the wrist. The ones who don't get charged must be getting some sort of reward and I shudder to think what that might be.

I can't believe you are *still* misleading your readers on this point.
Having been one of the posters on the Post site and having heard and read some of your interviews following the debacle, I know that you understand why people were and still are angry with you. That you steadfastly refuse to acknowledge the real point and instead keep bashing the commenters while failing to produce the (varying number of) comments you deemed so offensive simply further underscores your lack of credibility.
Once again, you have written: "In her Jan. 15 column, Howell erred in saying that Abramoff gave campaign donations to Democrats as well as Republicans. In fact, Abramoff directed clients to give to members of both parties, but he had donated his own personal funds only to Republicans."
You have yet to offer one single shred of *evidence* that "Abramoff directed clients to give to members of both parties." You keep *saying* that he did, and you've referred to some kind of documentary record of it, but *nothing* published in the Post or elsewhere supports your contention. That some tribes *did* give to Democrats while working with Abramoff is a fact. However, it is also a fact that they gave *more* to them *before* they started working with Abramoff. Further, they gave *much more* to Republicans after working with Abramoff.
It is flat-out a distortion to conclude that Abramoff was *advising* them to give to Dems, when all the evidence points to his advising them *not* to give to Dems, but rather to Republicans. That, of course, would be consistent with his entire known history of fundraising and lobbying, whereas your repeated assertion makes zero sense and is unsupported by anything but your repetition of it.
I know for a fact that this point was repeatedly raised in the blog comments you claim to have read so closely, because I and others made it. And I heard Al Franken push you on this issue as well. So I conclude that your feigned surprise and ignorance of people's outrage that you not only did *not* correct the error, but keep repeating it, is nothing but a rather lame bit of public theater. Apparently, you cannot be shamed into admitting your deceit, so I give up.

Thank Ba'al, NO!
I made the reasonable observation that the customer's instructor, having had a 3-day train-the-trainer session and a whole week to prepare prolly could deliver 1.5 days worth of material without my holding his hand. My boss, the customer, and the instructor all agreed.

Proton, we said "in the right situation," and then you go and set up a situation that isn't "right." You are granting our conclusion with your proviso about people whose job it specificaly is to prevent conditions from deteriorating.
kei & yuri
Good point. As I read it (and just recently reread it), the "right" situation thing just wouldn't click the appropriate mental switches for me to catch your nuance. My bad.
To clarify (hopefully), in my experience, if we are in the right situation, then things don't go awry. It is only when we are in the wrong sitation that things go to shit. It is the responsibility of the leadership to make bloody certain that we remain in the right situation. The price we all pay is simply too high if we in the chain of command don't do our job at the highest level possible.
And that's what I've been seeing for the past three years. An incompetent, immoral, and uncaring chain of command. And let me tell you who sets the tone. The President. And it goes down from there. Literally.
When I was just a young rifleman, none of this stuff about morality, leadership, and responsibility meant much to me. For reasons that have no bearing on this conversation. It is only as I grew older and carried the responsibilities that I became aware of what it meant, not just its impact on the troops I was responsible for, but the impact on myself.
It's one thing to be a private and diss your leadership for doing or failing to do something appropriate. It's something else entirely to be the one whose actions matter.
Which is why the Imperial Shitwit (to blatantly steal someone else's brilliant characterization) should never be allowed withing 600 miles of a leadership situation. He cannot hack it. And these kids are paying the price.
If I were a religious person, I'd fall down on my knees every night of my life, thanking god that while I was a private the president I served was Jimmy Carter and not some slimeball Republican.

WHOA! The Haloscan box just got verrrrry tiny. Freakshow.
When you occasionally have a really bad day, and you just need to take it out on someone, don't take it out on someone you know, take it out on someone you don't know.
I was sitting at my desk when I remembered a phone call I'd forgotten to make. I found the number and dialed it. A man answered, saying "Hello."
I politely said, "This is Chris. Could I please speak with Robyn Carter?"
Suddenly a manic voice yelled out in my ear "Get the right fucking number!" and the phone was slammed down on me.
I couldn't believe that anyone could be so rude. When I tracked down Robyn's correct number to call her, I found that I had accidentally transposed the last two digits. After hanging up with her, I decided to call the 'wrong' number again.
When the same guy answered the phone, I yelled "You're an asshole!" and hung up. I wrote his number down with the word 'asshole' next to it, and put it in my desk drawer.
Every couple of weeks, when I was paying bills or had a really bad day, I'd call him up and yell, "You're an asshole!" It always cheered me up.
When Caller ID was introduced, I thought my therapeutic "asshole calling" would have to stop. So, I called his number and said, "Hi, this is John Smith from Verizon. I'm calling to see if you're familiar with our Caller ID Program?"
He yelled "NO!" and slammed down the phone. I quickly called him back and said, "That's because you're an asshole!"
One day I was at the store, getting ready to pull into a parking spot. Some guy in a black BMW cut me off and pulled into the spot I had patiently waited for. I hit the horn and yelled that I'd been waiting for that spot, but the idiot ignored me. I noticed a "For Sale" sign
in his back window which included his phone number, so I wrote down the number.
A couple of days later, right after calling the first asshole (I had his number on speed dial) I thought that I'd better call the BMW asshole, too. I said, "Is this the man with the black BMW for sale?"
"Yes, it is", he said.
"Can you tell me where I can see it?" I asked.
"Yes, I live at 34 Mowbray Blvd, in Vaucluse. It's a yellow house, and the car's parked right out in front."
"What's your name?" I asked.
"My name is Don Hansen," he said.
"When's a good time to catch you, Don?"
"I'm home every evening after five."
"Listen, Don, can I tell you something?"
"Yes?"
"Don, you're an asshole!" Then I hung up, and added his number to my speed dial, too.
Now, when I had a problem, I had two assholes to call.
Then I came up with an idea. I called Asshole #1.
"Hello."
"You're an asshole!" (But I didn't hang up.)
"Are you still there?" he asked.
"Yeah," I said.
"Stop calling me," he screamed.
"Make me," I said.
"Who are you?" he asked.
"My name is Don Hansen."
"Yeah? Where do you live?"
"Asshole, I live at 34 Mowbray Blvd, Vaucluse, a yellow house, with my black Beamer parked in front."
He said, "I'm coming over right now, Don. And you had better start saying your prayers."
I said, "Yeah, like I'm really scared, asshole," and hung up.
Then I called Asshole #2. "Hello?" he said.
"Hello, asshole," I said.
He yelled, "If I ever find out who you are..."
"You'll what?" I said.
"I'll kick your as$," he exclaimed.
I answered, "Well, asshole, here's your chance. I'm coming over right now."
Then I hung up and immediately called the police, saying that I lived at 34 Mowbray Blvd, Vaucluse, and that I was on my way over there to kill my gay lover.
Then I called Channel 9 News about the gang war going down on Mowbray Blvd, Vaucluse.
I quickly got into my car and headed over to Mowbray. I got there just in time to watch two assholes beating the crap out of each other in front of six cop cars, an overhead police helicopter and a news crew.
It seems that a few are running for office with justice in mind.
Yes. I'm talking about the big guns though.

Well, you have to accept, I think, that war makes people do and see terrible things that they would never do or see otherwise. But I think we did okay by our WWII vets: they returned to a nation just back on its feet and a slew of social programs designed to help them reintegrate into society. We did none of that for our Vietnam vets, and we're certainly doing none of it now. In fact, we're slashing the help they should have been able to count on and billing them for bullshit.

I suspect that's probably so, ror. I mean, the WWII vets I knew would absolutely refuse to talk about their war experiences "It's over." or "Let it lie." were common responses.

I know I've heard it here, but I hear it in other places, most recently in the jury room when a discussion of Iraq came up. Three of the other jurors said that their fathers or grandfathers never, ever talked about the war.
I know we're more touch-feely now, and I wonder what demons ruled the lives of those men, but PTSD is still hard to overcome.
Still, if Hollywood got it partially right, Captain Neuman, M.D. at least documented that this issue was being addressed, but only for the most severely affected.

Planning, body armor, sufficient troops, you name it (not even mentioning having a worthwhile reason for the war)...as a country, we've utterly, utterly failed these soldiers.
Heavy is the head that wears the crown...unless the head is completely and totally empty, that is....

-Off hand, has anyone heard anything
-about the drug use amongst the GIs
-in Iraq? As I vaguely recall, it was
-widespread in VietNam, right?
Marcia Brady
I've seen a few movies about it and read a few accounts. Luckily I missed Vietnam/draft by about 6 months. My guess is that drugs in the military were just as common as drugs in civilian life and at that time(and now) they were very prevelent. If you want 'em, you get 'em. About 8-10 percent of the population are "addictive" personalities(or so I've heard). Now what was I saying, Oh! Pass the bong.....

I'm immensely proud, but worry like hell whenever he's overseas.
Makes sense to me. I hope you and your whole family come through okay.
