I thought Dick Cheney took the cake when the guy he shot in the face came out and apologized to the Vice President. But he took the cake on so many occasions before that, I am afraid there will be no more cake in America, at least for another generation.

PURDY — Seven departments, 50 firefighters, all volunteers. The house would burn.
After a week of hurried preparation, intense cooperation and hours of waiting Thursday, the rural fire departments around Camp Barnabas in Purdy torched the home of camp owners Cyndy and Paul Teas.
...
The Monett Rural Fire Department didn't get much notice that "Extreme Makeover" wanted its help, said Capt. Kevin Litchfield.
Pulling together seven fire departments and getting the state permits on short notice isn't easy, but the controlled burn is a great opportunity for firefighters to train, he said.
"This is going to be pretty good task," said Capt. David Shaner of the Monett department as firefighters tended to last-minute details. "It's going to be difficult, but we've trained, trained, trained."
Protecting surrounding structures and preventing foliage from also burning is necessary, so firefighters used a curtain wall of water to keep the flames contained.
At the ready when the fire started were 10,000 to 12,000 gallons of water, with more available.
"We're very prepared," said Stacy Cloud, a firefighter with the Monett department and the only woman among the crews.

What Cheney did say to Whittington, as he lay, bleeding on the ground was this:
"Harry, I didn't know you were there."
Even under such stressful circumstances, Darth Cheney had the presence of mind to know that he needed to make Harry aware of that crucial fact. Because he realized that, otherwise, this man who had known him for 30 years would conclude that Darth had intentionally shot him.
In the face.
With a shotgun.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A spate of roadside bombings in Baghdad and north of the capital killed a U.S. soldier and at least 11 Iraqis Saturday, officials said. Two Macedonians were kidnapped in southern Iraq, while a search is on for a private German plane missing in the north.
An Iraqi police major also was killed by drive-by gunmen in the insurgent stronghold of Ramadi, west of Baghdad, in the latest attack targeting security forces that the United States hopes will eventually take control of Iraq.
The U.S. military said a roadside bomb struck an American vehicle at about 8 a.m. in eastern Baghdad, killing a soldier assigned to the Multi-National Division-Baghdad.

Russian Industry and Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko was in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi this week when he commented on a decision by the Turkmen leadership to raise the price of natural gas. But his words may have had the greatest impact all the way back in Kyiv, where they came as a grim reminder Ukraine’s gas woes are far from over.
To backtrack -- Turkmenistan President Saparmurat Niyazov, otherwise known as Turkmenbashi, declared on February 11 that he intended to raise the price of natural gas from $65 to $100 per 1,000 cubic meters this autumn.

You are right about that. Whatever minimal inroads the GOP had made into the African-American community they were totally lost after Katrina.
And yes, as predicted, only now, 6 months later, are the ramifications of the storm sinking in for a lot of folks. Savings are used up, people are booted out of hotel rooms, FEMA is withholding rental assistance payments, payment of insurance claims has slowed to a trickle, trailers are sinking unused in the mud of Hope, Arkansas, most of us are still out of work.
The whole situation is capital-F Fucked. But hey, since some asshole used his FEMA money to buy a tattoo, that should be reason enough to give up on the rest of us, right?

Interesting criminological methodology you got there, big boy.....
"Sheriff: No More Sexual Services for Detectives Investigating Prostitution
From The Associated Press
SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. -- The sheriff said Friday he will no longer allow detectives to receive sexual services while investigating suspected prostitution after they spent $1,200 at massage parlors last month and sparked a public outcry.
Spotsylvania County Sheriff Howard Smith defended the practice as necessary to obtain a conviction but told his department he was suspending it.
"As sheriff, I understand the feelings and concerns the citizens of this county have expressed," Smith said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Friday. "And I empathize with those feelings. Because of the public's express response, I have suspended this practice."
Court documents show that four times last month, county detectives allowed women at Moon Spa to perform sex acts on them -- once leaving a $350 tip. A total of $1,200 was spent during the visits, Smith said. He said multiple visits were necessary so detectives could build trust with the operators."

He was just standing there by the Mosel River, didn't really mind people, just some "hey, don't bother me" honks.

oh damn I just want to go back to Sweden.
Buckeye, Dealer of Rare Coins-Oh come on. Dayton, OH or Sweden? Surely you jest. Why you can get in your car, drive over to North Dixie Drive, and sit all day on a bar stool and watch a topless Katie'O'Bierne look-a-like do lap dances.

Ha! You not so funny, spinoza.
Though if I wanted to vist the Miami Valley's finer entertainment establishments, I'd have to take the bus. Which may or may not be on time, cause the driver is too busy yakking on the cell phone. And all the other passengers are either, eating, drinking, yelling, and trying to drape themselves on as many seats as possible. Sure, I think it's Dayton in a landslide!

IIRC, that was one of Little Ricky's ideas, but I never knew if it got off the ground or was shot down after some negative publicity.

that shit NEVER goes away...
it'll be embedded in some omnibus legislation that 90% of the fucknozzles who vote on it will NOT have read...
we'll wake up some morning to find it's been private for weeks...
just in time for a hurricane...

Hoppy birdies, Atrios and David,

Best wishes for many happy returns of the day from all your kitty friends at the Soprano household (assisted in typing by their four-legged staff).

Thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Black for having sex and producing a little Duncan. Perhaps they would consider writing their memiors and sharing their parenting secrets. Seems they knew the secret to raising a child that grows into an intelligent, thougtful, ethical and responsible contributing adult member of his society and of the universe.
How sad it seems sometimes, that the more vocal offspring of this era lean toward the mentally void and selfish ilk of the little Bushes and little Dicks.
Bonne anniversaire - and cool that you and David E. share it.

Exactly nine days before Atrios was born a bunch of us high-school seniors got together to munch popcorn and watch the Beatles on Ed Sullivan's teevee show in glorious black&white.
It was a great evening, Dr. Black. Too bad you missed it.
Happy Birthday to our favorite young curmudgeon (and I mean that in only the nicest way). Keep up the good work. I'd like to help, but I need to take my nap now.

Oh, Dear! The senility has already set in. I said 9 days before Atrios was born I watched the Beatles and, of course, it was actually ten years and nine days before Atrios that the other event occurred. Before my nap I'm going to see if I can find some laudanum to help me rest...
Point is, Happy Birthday to Atrios.
